Celtic Diary Friday October 2: Close The Place Down and Build A Car Park.

Older readers will remember that line from the late John Fairgrieve , a writer with the Sunday Mail who had an unhidden soft spot for Hearts. When they lost a game, he used the above as a headline to indicate how he perhaps felt a little miffed when he wrote the story.

I know how he feels.

There are, according to supporters on various forums, and on other social media outlets , a number of good things to take from last nights 2-2 draw with Fenerbahce.

I.however , am struggling to see them.

Maybe I’m just a little ratty.

The eldest went back to chester yesterday, and we had to help him move. The younger kids were in the car, so it was “Are we there yet ? Are we nearly there yet ? ” all the way along the A51.

Still, one of them asked his mum to stop so I could have a fag, and I was quiet for the rest of the trip.

Apart from a brief spell in the first half, which granted led to a couple of goals for the hoops, it was bloody awful.

Celtic were nervous, they were unable to keep possession, making too many what tennis players call unforced errors, and quite frankly were lucky to hold on for the point.

The organisation and work evident against Qarabag a couple of months ago has gone, replaced by a frantic “I’ll get it ” by whoever seems to be anywhere near the ball.

Except when it’s Efe Ambrose, and there’s a striker behind him. By the way, while Ambrose should have done better, where was the shout of “man on ” ?

While there were flashes of good play, not enough of the team were doing it for long enough periods.

Celtic won’t get out of this group on the evidence of the first two games. We have failed to beat a couple of ordinary teams, and it’s entirely our own fault.

Craig Gordon looks like a keeper who is terrified of the ball going anywhere near his defenders. The defenders look terrified of the ball going anywhere near the defenders. The midfield run about a bit, win the ball and then give it to the opposition. The wingers can’t find anyone to aim the ball at, and anyway they can’t hit the target if needed, whilst the forward does his liberal best to find a balance between omnipresence and perpetual motion.

Ronny deila seemed to think it was working last night, and left it too late for Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic to make an impact. this despite Kris Commons doing breathing exercises for most of the first half, and Stefan Johansen behaving like a collie dug chasing a bin bag on a beach.

In the press, there sems to be an acceptance from the Celtic management, the players and even a few of the support.

Fuck that.

It was an all round disaster.

If we play the same players in the same system in the next game, we will get the same result.

Change it . Before it’s too late.

Instead of molding the players to suit a system, mold the system to suit the players we have.

If nothing else, it will surprise molde, who , despite optimistic predictions that two wins will see us top the group, are still the only team to have won a game thus far.

Two wins for them will see them qualify. And trust me, they will go for it against us.

I’m off to find a bus to throw myself under.

It won’t be the Deila bus.

That tipped over on the carriageway somewhere round about the beginning of last month.

Why drop Rogic for Johansson, he has done nothing all season and even less last night, Rogic came on and instantly had more of an impact. Subs were too late and for me the boy Blackett played well at centre half the other week and can’t be as bombscare as big Efe. Having every player back defending corners caused us too many problems with us unable to keep the ball and Ronny has got to see that our setup at set pieces and corners is terrible and costing us dearly. Apart from that I thought we maybe could have edged the game against an ordinary side.

Some of your blog I agree with after 60 minutes both Rogic and Armstrong should have been on. While it’s easy to call Effe the scapegoat, I called him something else last night I don’t think we have played a single 90 minutes this season with the same back 4; remember 2 of the defenders have hardly played football never mind together. I’ve had enough with Johansen he seems incapable of finding a Celtic player and easy passes and reading of the game seems beyond him; give me Rogic every time!

ronny still doesnt know how to mix it up after going 2 goals up or trying to defend a lead… further proof in my opinion that he doesnt know what hes doing when he makes subs with 3 mins to go…. the fenerbache boss was not afraid to change it early and he reaped the benefits!!! 2 missed oppurtunities!!

I don’t want to be too negative today because I’m actually sick of reading myself fucking moaning.
What I will say is that if we had went in at half time 2-0 up it was game over.

Deila must know Ambrose will let the team down, he shouldn’t trust him, this was clear again last night.

Morning Ralph,
If you’re looking to be cheered up look away now.

Ambrose is an accident that happens, not waiting to happen but guaranteed to happen, in fact I wonder if Efe’s middle name is ‘ premeditated’? Surely this was his last game for the club, he is utterly useless and my blood pressure goes up when he comes off the bench, never mind when he starts a game.

I know I harp on about two up front, we need to do this, It fits Celtic…..Larsson and Sutton sort of thing!

Feel sorry for Broony last night as he was back to the form we know he is capable of HH!

I would have subbed Ambrose at half as a punishment if nothing else. It happens too many times. Playing good 90% of game is fine but he is costing us point all over the place with stupidity.

As you say DNC Blackett can play in centre.

Lets stop Pusey footing around. How many times can we threw away a lead in Europe and carry on with the same manager who seems incapable of changing a game in any way once its kicked off. Subs after 82 minutes. We were in trouble after 50 minutes. Or maybe he thinks a draw is a good result. His results in Europe have been disgraceful. Get rid of him now before its too late.

Fenerbache were no ordinary side, their manager saw the problem and adapted. They passed the baฤบl well and were dangerous out wide where I thought young Kierney played very well, helped by Forest. That’s twice Celtic havent been capable of defending a lead. Players arent doing their jobs at set pieces, not just defenders. Its not working, its not the system, its the players they are too stupid to uderstand how to defend zonally. There is no commanding CH to make sure everybody is switched on and then make sure somebody blocks or gets their head on the cross. Johansen was an empty jersey and why he left Armstrong on the bench until the end is a mystery. Deila isn’t adapting to situations and he doesn’t seem to be learning.Atmosphere was excellent last night, well done bhoys and ghirls. HH

Sorry, but Fenerbahce are not an ordinary side. We should have won at home but it’s easy to see that Fenerbahce are less ordinary than Ajax. I think Simunovic and Boyata would be our best bet. Tierney looked damn good. Here’s a thing that worries me. Last season, Gordon built everything from the back but now he hoofs the ball and we rarely win it.
I think everybody worked hard but it wasn’t good enough. Agree about Armstrong and Rogic. Making good subs at the right time is a real art. Both Lennon and Strachan rarely got it right so Ronny is not alone.
I always like a plan B. Their plan B kept Fenerbahce from losing last night. Now, we need to have a plan B, maybe beginning with Hamilton on Sunday.
Devoy’s plan B, for domestic use only:
3-5-2

Bailly
Lustig/Boyata/Blackett
Janko/Brown/Bitton/Rogic/Izzy
Ciftci/Griffiths

4-4-2

Bailly
Lustig/Boyata/Blackett/Izzy
Forrest/Brown/Bitton/Commons
Griffiths/Ciftci

Gordon needs a rest as do many others.
subs for all above:
Mackay-Steven,Rogic, Armstrong,McGregor,Fasan,Stokes,Tierney

Assuming Allan, Mulgrew and Simunovic not yet fit.
Supporting Celtic is a bit like real life ain’t it?

Bob Cobb

I think a few people here are being a bit harsh. I thought we were clearly the better team and that were it not for Ambrose, we would have won the game comfortably.

Ajax and fenerbahce are no mug and we hve n better than both in my opinion. I think we will come out of this group ok.

Ronnie does need to make changes sooner though – n doubt about that.

If you are wanting cheering up, just reflect on the fact that our 18yo left back was tremendous last night.

If anyone thinks Blackett is the answer then I seriously don’t know what the question is. He is shockingly bad, as his ‘cameo’ confirmed last night. On Ambrose; I don’t have much to add (it has all been said so many times over), other than he should’ve been out the door long ago.

Back to the match in general; I don’t buy into all the negativity. I thought we played pretty well for the most part. The goal before half time completely changed the complexion of the match, they came out all guns blazing and we were pegged back. The second goal was inevitable. And I bet most folk (me included) thought it was inevitable that we would go on to lose the game. But we didn’t, we fought our way back in and probably should’ve won it.

All that said, we won’t get anywhere if we keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

Blackett is a poor player who does not appear to be able to pass to a team mate. Put us right in trouble late on.
Fenerbache are a good team, much better than Ajax. Celtic were second best for large chunks of the game.
To be honest, they absolutely battered Celtic for 20-25 minutes at the beginning of the second half and it was a miracle that it was still 2-2.
After that Celtic came back and may even have scored. They settled for a point with about 10 to go, thank God.
Efe’s mistake changed the whole game, hence the battering at the start of the second half. There is nothing Deila could do about this. Simunovic is first choice, Blackett is no better than Efe. However, you would expect a professional to be able to make a simple header, even Efe.
By the way, why do Cltic players find it impossible to keep the ball down when shooting from about 20-25 yards. Extra practice needed.

Reply to  john

For 20 minuytes before kick off that all the Celtic players – griffiths, Biton, Johansen and Commons were doing.
Quick 1-2s and shots from 20 yards into both Gordon and sub keeper.

Well….if only the game of football lasted 40 minutes, we would be world champs!

I admit, I was the one that shouted “HEIDIE IT!” as big Efe went towards that easy ball with his limp cornroll..allowing the John carew tribute act in was criminal. More hairspray needed big man!

Thought Dedryk and Kierney did well, Van Persie was anonymous. Broonie was good, Biton had a decent game. Forrest did well. Johansen was awful, Griffiths scored and that was all the service he had bar annoying their keeper, Commons scored and that was about it, sometimes folk ran passed him like he was stuck to the pitch. Lustig did well and the tactics were spot on for 40 minutes.

After the goal we were a shambles. For 20 minutes we looked like a pub team half drunk from a lock-in. Delia really must look at getting a seasoned hard professional who will lead with authority, give Roy Aitken a pair of boots!

No John Collins in dugout? Couldn’t see him from my place just behind but did see Ronnie and kennedy plenty.

In conclusion, I blame the fans. Everytime we do that stupid fucking “Lets all do the Huddle” at 2-0 up we let a goal in, happened wae Malmo and happened last night. Lets leave that pish to 4-0 up against Sevco please.

Scottybhoy

Gordon couldn’t pass the ball out last night because fenerbache pressed high up against our defenders. Apart from that he had no chance with the goals. I’ve stuck up for efe but enough is enough. Too many stupid costly mistakes. Penalty v Dundee Utd. Foul v sheep shaggers and 2 goals last night. And that’s just of the top of my head this season. He’s not played many games. If we go in 2-0 at half time it’s a total different game. I thought we played well in stages last night. Compared to Neil Lennons last season in Europe at home. Ac Milan was embarrassing and we were lucky v Ajax at home. Barca away was the only time watching a Celtic game that I turned it off and Ajax away was a disgrace as well

“โ€ฆTWO GOALS LAST NIGHT”? If Leigh Griffiths had nipped in to score Fenerbache’s sort of second goal last night, we would have praised him as a striker rather than blame his marker. Don’t blame Ambrose for everything that goes wrong.

First of all to Drew the ZOMBIE troll F**k off. It’s time for Efe to go, far to many howlers over the past few season’s the biggest one against juve then comes that one last night. If this was done in any other form of employment it would have been p45 time long before now. Most of the time our ball retention is shocking after about 3 passes you think someone puts petrol on the ball and ignites it. We have lost 4 goals that have been major turning points in europe this season, zonal marking doesn’t work, it’s time to change the system now before we get put out.

Bgbhoy

Monti. I’m saying it. The manager is a penis and needs to leave. More I think about it the more I believe it. Last night after the 2nd goal could of been 4 at least for them. Leave now Ronny

Doc

Another game that feels like two points dropped rather than a point gained. We performed well but only in spells as Efe and zonal marking conspired throw away a lead once again. A lot of focus on Efes header, I thought he was fouled by their sub just before the non-header, don’t know if others saw it or I was seeing things again. The second was a joke, they had one man in the goal area against six of our players, I thought they would play it short, looks like the players in the box thought the same and switched off.

A huge positive from the game was Tierney, hes played before but looked more like a midfielder as he lacked basic marking and tackling. Last night he looked the part, much improved in a short time, and I can see him making a real impact in the future. Forest played well and didn’t shirk his defensive duties and linked up well with Tierney, more of the same please. Lustig was immense as usual, showing again that hes one of our best players. My MOTM had to be Scott Brown, utterly bossed the midfield, led by example and dealt well with the amount of fouls he was on the end of. Winning the ball in the air and on the ground, interceptions, pressure on the man in possession, accurate and ambitious passing. Best I’ve seen him play against a non-hun team. A true captains performance, deserved a victory.

we didnt play too badly however it was another game where the manager snapped a draw from the jaws of victory… there was a 25 minute spell where we totally collapsed and again ronny showed he cant change how he plays or make subs at the correct times… no longer am i accepting this chat of its getting better or give him another year…. have you seen how many goals weve lost under him in europe? 32 from 20 games or something…. thats inclding playing garbage from iceland etc… 2 goals up AGAIN and they blow it… something fundamentaly wrong there im afraid… time for ronny to go… just because this guy does a roar with the fans after a win is no reason to continually back him when its clearly not working… i see no evidence weve improved as a team

agree with most of the comments, but Fenerbache second goal was a total balls up by the Celtic defence Griffiths let his man go no attempt to track and ambrose was a fucking statue and ronnies use of subs is baffling thought Brown did ok but why was Johannson on the park for almost the full 90 minutes? One final thought The EPL clubs playing last night did no better than Celtic with all their millions spent HH

Fernerbache played the same zonal marking as us but with a difference there goalie came out to gather everything that got pumped into him and got ball and whoever was in front off him I know we scored with a corner but goalie saved first attempt.
Maybe I’m wrong but with zonal marking has goalie not to come out for ball and command the area, nothing on Gordon who is cracking goalie but since he has had a season from goalie couch has went back the way right onto the line ? Do you think it’s our goalie couch that’s at fault but wtf do I know.

Reading the comments pages is more akin to the Daily Records or listening to the pre-screened Radio Clyde whingers.

Cant believe all the negativity!

Ronny Deila has set his teams up to play in 2 European games, against high level opposition which would have won away to Ajax and home to Fenerbache had it not been for individual errors.

The lack of Plan B does concern me however.

We would have beaten Ajax had it not been for Izaguirre – one of our most experienced players losing his head.

We havent dominated a game against a team worth 10 times our own collectively so much in years and if it wasnt for that bombscare Ambrose we would have won.

The process should be whenever a senior player demonstrates mental frailties – then they are shipped out and replaced.

What Deila needs to do – is work on a project that replaces Izzy (as I believe he tried to do in the summer but was left down by his superiors) and get rid of Ambrose (which I dont believe he has tried to do – playing the bafoon right back appears to indicate the management team rate him!).

Don’t know what has happened to our Fraser Forster impersonator in goal – he doesnt inspire any confidence or reassurance to me so I can only imagine this transpires into an already weak defence.

Anybody that thought replacing VVD and Denayer would be anything other than improbable does not remember the spectre of the sieve very well.

Paul Macca

Remember the sieve … John Kennedy although a promising player who had his career cut short … (and to be fair has done well with the kids in the past) is out of his depth as a first team coach. The first goal was the old case of “Donยดt let it bounce” … Efe did and his weak pass back to a stationary Gordon .. (another thing … Gordon was frontal to the situation could see the danger .. but in the pictures I can never see if he gave Efe any shout ? Anyone who was at the game can clarify this for me ??) … 2nd goal .. Good corner .. their tails were up and started the second half better than we did … actually when we got the 2nd i was screaming at the tv .. donยดt let up .. remembering what happened v Malmo .. anyway back to the corner … anyone tell me WHY someone short (Griff) was picking up (well in theory anyway) their number 9 ? why Griff didnยดt go with the runner ? Surely Bitton or Johansen with more height would have been better ? … ok Positives
Fenerbahce are kicking themselves that they didnยดt win … although not a huge fan .. I WAS impressed with Forrest last night … finally an end ball and not just twisting turning runs that got nowhere… Tierney with more exposure and game time will be a good long term replacement for Izzy .. Rogic was positive when he came on … Commons proved that the shadow striker spot should be his .. Ok so now we know that the double header v Molde is crucial .. Jozo has to be back for those and start getting an understanding with Boyata (who played well last night … must have been high on confidence after his call up ) …

Hypothetically mind, you are a Billionaire and have the finance to put your club and team on to a different level, forever puting clear daylight between Celtic and it’s domestic rivals and at the same time, building a side that COMPETES each and every single year in the Champions league groups minimum.

There are ยฃ10,000 – ยฃ15,000 empty seats in your stadium for most home games, these seats would be filled overnight if you did the following, bring in a manager who is respected throughout the game, who HAS competed regularly in the CL through his career.
Bring into the TEAM players who have had CL experience and mix them with our best young players.

So to summarise, remembering you are a billionaire…..Would you do it?

Would you do it today?

We should give Deila until the end of the season I agree, but I want to see more from him, the players and this board between now and then!
A settled defence is key to our success this season, need to get Simunovic in beside Boyata, who I thought looked the part at times v Fenerbahce.
Armstrong coming back is also a big plus, there’s a lot of good young players at Celtic just now, a couple of shrewd signings will help them.

Christ, we’re back to the name calling and in fighting. If the game had ended 2-1 to Celtic with everything the same except them scoring a second goal (Efe again letting the guy nip in to head it) then I bet there would have been a totally different tone to the posts here today and not so much emphasis on the “f*cking manager”. The result as usual seems to colour many people’s opinion, like a knee jerk reaction that only calms down a few days later.
I think some guys underestimate the effect that Efe’s blunder had just before half-time. The players knew that it would give a boost to Fenerbahce..it was a total kick in the baws for them…and I bet a good few of them were hoping that Ronny would sub Efe, if not for the blunder itself then because the player must have been going over it in his mind and feeling bad..therefore not 100% mentally focused for the second half.
Suddenly Griffith’s goal is getting devalued, and Commons’ cracker is devalued…just to fit the agenda of “sack the manager”.
I’m disappointed at the way some people on here think that anybody who disagrees with their opinion should be sworn at and insulted….that’s Rangersmedia’s standard, we’re better than that. This is a forum for everybody to exchange points of view..those points of view will be similar or very different..we are not North Korea after all.
A hypothetical question for those who would have us spend what we don’t have:-
If Van Persie had been playing for Celtic last night and the result was the same, would you have been happy with his performance, bearing in mind that he’s on 320,000 pounds a week?
Don’t make me laugh.

Kinda where I have been coming from since Deila signed.
God forbid we don’t hammer Hamilton by at least 5 goals at the weekend or there could be some serious chuntering occurring?
The first priority in any game is don’t lose it.
Secondly try take your chances.
Third defend a lead.
Fourth try entertain the fans when you do.
I think we managed 3 out of the 4 during the game.
Had they scored their goals first and we had pulled 2 back then I think the mood would be different?
Yet the end result exactly the same.
Fenerbahce have some quality in that side players out of our wage structure who have played tougher Leagues than ours so a draw is not as bad as some seem to think.
I read in the papers Celtic are developing a habit of letting leads slip?
Aye that may be so but we have also developed a habit of picking up points when not at our best for 90 minutes.
Surely you can all remember the numerous nights of glorious failures under several bosses?
2 tough games scored 4 goals and not been beaten as of yet.
That without hitting top gear too and with several defensive blunders.

” The first priority is not to lose a game “??
Really Charlie?

Since when has it been Celtic’s philosophy to approach a game with an attitude to make sure we don’t lose it?

And when we have attacked attacked attacked all game like against Hearts and we fail to score?
It’s “Deila out”.
Who would be a Manager at Celtic?

Charlie,
There are many forms of ‘ attacking ‘ dominating the ball and going forward without real penetration is one of them.
Celtic have had a habit for years now, where we have large percentages of possession but after 35 mins, still not made the opposition goalkeeper make a save?

@Monti Monti you could go over most of the games played under deila domestically and find we have created more than enough chances to win all of them.
All out attack in Europe is a no no unless you have a squad like Barca Madrid or Bayern absolutely brimming with top quality players.
So I guess you mean at home?
If so then the Football under Deila is far better going forward under Lennon as we were slow in the build up and spent most of the game passing the ball from side to side along the midfield.
We have both Wingbacks gong forward at every opportunity and 4 players already deployed in Attack that’s 6 players who are pushing forward leaving 4 at the back effectively.
It is down to the players to implement it and when they do get their shit together it’s as an effective setup as any I have seen to date in Football.
I prefer a 3-5-2 always have but it has it’s issues particularly when caught on the counter as teams can get round you down the sides too easily like we did late on against Fenerbahce when they changed it.
Our issue this season as with last is down to individual error and poor individual performances from key players.
Not the Manager or his system.

@Charlie Saiz,
I’m not advocating all out attack football in Europe, I’m talking about how it is possible for a team ( Celtic) to have such a high percentage of possession yet fail to make the opposition goalkeeper blow out his arse!

Like you Charlie, I prefer 3-5-2, in fact any formation that incorporates two strikers would do me.

If Gordon had come way off his line to collect the anticipated header and Efe had hit it over his head into the net, you’d have slagged Gordon for that. It was an easy straight to the goalie’s arms type of header, but Efe hit it like a big lassie. It was 100% his error, naebody else’s.
Remember when he had the chance against Juventus in front of goal?….and headed it weakly as well!!
He’s not a scapegoat…he’s a scaregoat…he’s ungainly and clumsy when he receives the ball, almost always needing two touches and time to steady himself…you saw their players running at him every time he received a pass ‘cos they sensed he was a weak link in the defence.

Efe shoulda kicked it back over his shoulder or headed it wide to Boyata.
He did neither and the reson for that is the bump he got when he went for the ball first time the big forward let him know he was there and it ruffled him.
Up until that point he was solid all night.
One thing that did fuck me off was the card happy cunt in the middle I counted 3 late tackles by Van Persie 2 on Brown one on Tierney the ef never even spoke to him once.
Johansen went in late once card was out in a flash and he had words.
Same goes for their Captain again a late one on Brown he was booked…he did the same again when we went on the counter on Bitton I think ref clocked who it was said fuck all.
He should have walked for a second offence and it being a professional foul.
Very picky with some very inconsistent with others.

Correct Charlie,
Ambrose had 3 options 1) belt it tae fuck.
2) knock it left or right to a team mate.
3) sell the jerseys again.

He opted for 3) because it’s what he does.
