Celtic Diary Friday September 18: Indian Summer Begins…

Well, that wasn’t so bad, was it ?

Celtic secured a vital away point in amsterdam, and two away goals should the group come down to a head to head, despite finishing the game with ten men and Efe Ambrose.

Before i go any further, it’s worth pointing out that Emilio Izaguirre, sent off for a second yellow card, is getting the blame for Celtic yet again snatching a draw from the jaws of victory.

Bollocks.

Any one of four, maybe even five, could have been given their marching orders as the referee brandished his yellow card as though he were signalling one of his mates in the crowd, Izzy was just unfortunate that his enthusiastic challenge was deemed worthy of a caution.

He said afterwards;

I am very disappointed with my red card. I need to take responsibility for the dropped points.

“Of course I was worried I had let the team down by leaving them with 10 men. I said sorry to the boys. It was a big game and we needed to keep 11 players on the field.

“They accepted my apology and were fine with me. These things happen so I need to be focused and 100 per cent fit for coming games.

“The first yellow was hard because I touched the ball first and stopped the pass but the second I caught their guy. Now I must keep my head up and work hard for the team.”

I’d take four of him at the back, attitude wise, ahead of any four you care to name from any other team. It’s about time we had a couple of baby eaters in the back line. Though Izzy shouldn’t really ask permission to sacrifice them before a game.

And as for Efe Ambrose, he was only on for fifteen minutes or so, but did more in the air and on the ground than the other two centre backs put together. He was outstanding, and deserves all the praise that should be coming his way.

I want a t-shirt with that picture, and “Don’t Worry, I Got This ” printed on it.

When ajax turned on the pressure in the closing stages, you knew they would probably score, but it took  a bit of luck to get the equaliser.

A free kick was swung in from the left, Craig Gordon positioned himself for an attacking header, but the ball deceived everyone, and ended up in the net. Though the defenders could have done a wee bit better, but sometimes you have to hold your hands up and compliment the scorer.

Gordon just put it down to bad luck, which in truth, it was;

“I didn’t see a lot of the free-kick. It came through everyone and I don’t think anyone got a touch in the end.

“I just tried to spread myself to cover every angle but everyone missed it and the ball went in at the back post.

“When you get a ball as good as that you spread yourself, make yourself as big as possible and hope it hits you.

“You just look for that wee bit of luck but it didn’t happen on this occasion and it went into the back of the net.”

Before the game, I would have been happy with just an improved performance with a healthy dollop of passion thrown in, and anything else would have been a bonus.

The passion was certainly there, the performance improved but still a little shaky, with too many passes still going astray, and perhaps a lack of speed allowing for players to be caught in possession, but overall, it’s an away point, and signs of improvement.

So, yes, i’m chuffed.

To get it into perspective, have a look at this;

Manager Ronny Deila was a little more philosophical;

“Of course the sending-off was the turning point.

“I’m quite sure we would have won without the red card.

“We had very good control at that stage when it was 11 v 11.

“But when we went down to 10 men, they got more crosses into the box and we had to deal with it.

Which is in itself a compliment to how Emilio had contributed up to that point. But not as much as what he said next;

It was very difficult because he had good control of El Ghazi.

“In the first half, he didn’t do anything but he got caught on the wrong side one time before it.

“It was a difficult decision to take him off because we got cramps and some haven’t played so much, so we had to make other changes.

“I don’t think he touched him so much. He did well in 95 per cent of the chances he had against him.

“The first yellow card I could not understand but that happened.

“Emilio has no record of a lot of red cards. He played well up to then. He took out their best player for most of the game.”

And on the rest of the performance ?

“We played well, we created chances and we defended as a team. We had a great attitude and I’m very proud of the boys.

“If you see the whole game, a draw is okay. It is a very important point away from home.

“The boys showed me they want to fight. We put ourselves in a good position with a point away in Amsterdam.”

“Their first goal was great play, fast passing and a lovely shot.

“Sometimes you have to say well done to the opponent as well.

“But they only had one more half chance in the first period.

“In the second half we controlled the game, created some chances and we were dangerous in set-plays.

“I felt we had control but when we got to 10 men, we had trouble.”

Frank de Boer, ajax boss, had a moan, somewhat predictably;

They parked two buses in front of us after they scored. If you play at home, you count them as lost points.

ha ha

And for travelling fans, it appears the police in amsterdam had learned from their mistakes last time. There were only seventeen arrests, none of which , it seems, were Celtic fans.

And the Fenian lampost behaved itself as well.

I’m still not impressed with our general passing and inability to control possession.
Forrest contributed little on the left, likewise Johansen in the middle of the park.

I thought Deila got it right on the night but there is plenty room for improvement.

I think Gordon could have done better with their second, it went through him, it wasn’t right in the corner.

Ah Joe, living among the London Hipsters hadhas gone to your head son. Try going up sauchiehall Street like that without being laughed at or kicked in the stones.
Better showing last night, I’m more inclined to agree with de Boer than Ronnie, we parked the bus rather than controlled the game in the second half but did it relatively well. That’s relative to how well we did it in malmo. Disappointing we couldn’t hold on to the result, but not surprising, like wise that we conceded from a set play – I blame Gordon, once he started to come be should have cleared everything out of the way to get to the ball. Instead he for stick nowhere.
BitBut johanssen was better than he’s been for a while as was Bitton. Commons on a date start brother some composure to our attacking play.
A weird thing to say maybe but I like it when you don’t notice the centre half, means no real clangers and simo was like that last night, not r really noticed too much, so promising. Big efe good (I think he’s not too bad at all) and we have a point on the board. Bit more spirit in the side. I still have reservations but overall would have been happy with a point before so not going to complain too hard now.

Here’s that financial matter we discussed a few days ago in detail I’m sure it will help you to realise I am not as big a fan of our Board as you seem to think.
The Co-op Loan debate:
http://cdn.celticfc.net/assets/downloads/Celtic_Report_2014.pdf
• New long term bank facility agreement (Page 1)
(v) Financial Risk (Page 10)
At 30 June 2014, the Group has access to a debt facility
of £32.44m provided by the Co-operative Bank plc. The
composition and utilisation of the debt is outlined at Notes 24
and 29 to the Financial Statements. Given the current economic
climate the availability and utilisation of such facilities is closely
monitored.
The Group is exposed to financial risk through its financial assets
and liabilities. The key financial risk is that the proceeds from
financial assets are not sufficient to fund the obligations arising
from liabilities as they fall due. The most important components
of financial risk are interest rate risk, currency risk, credit risk,
liquidity risk, cash flow risk and price risk. Due to the nature
of the Group’s business the financial risks that the Directors
consider particularly relevant to the Company are credit risk,
interest risk, currency risk and liquidity risk.
Further information is provided in Note 29 to the Financial
Statements as to how the Group addresses these risks.
FINANCE INCOME & COSTS (page 12)
The finance costs for the year to 30 June 2014 of £0.72m
(2013: £0.72m) reflects interest due on the Company’s borrowing
facilities with the Co-operative Bank
NON CURRENT LIABILITIES *Loans* (page 12)
The increase in non-current liabilities from 30 June 2013 of £0.55m
to £15.23m is largely as a result of the allocation of the onerous
lease and dilapidations provisions which are greater than one year,
offset by a decrease in the term loan and also in deferred income
due after more than one year.
CURRENT LIABILITIES (page 12)
The increase in trade and other payables and in provisions from
30 June 2013 of £1.91m to £17.69m includes current borrowings
and largely reflects the uplift in amounts payable in respect of
trade creditors offset by a reduction in accrued expenditure,
together with an increase in the payments due under the
Company’s bonus scheme.
BANK FACILITIES **IMPORTANT** (Page 13)
The banking facilities of the Group and Company for the year end
30 June 2014 are described in notes 24 and 29.
Following a review of potential future banking facility requirements,
(1)the Company entered into a new lending agreement with the
Co-operative Bank effective as of 30 August 2014.
(2)This new agreement has a combined borrowing facility of £20.40m which consists of
(a) a £6.00m revolving credit facility and
(b) £14.40m in longterm loans.
The revolving credit facility will bear interest at base rate
plus 1.00% and will reduce by £0.50m after year one and a further
£0.50m after year two. The facility will be repaid or reviewed after
three years.
The long term loans will bear interest at London Inter-Bank Offered
Rate plus 1.125%. The loans are floating rate loans and therefore
expose the Group to cash flow risk. The loans are repayable in equal quarterly instalments of £0.05m from the commencement date until
(c)full repayment of £12.40m in July 2019.
The Group has the option to repay the loans earlier than these dates without penalty.
(d)The borrowing facility will continue to be secured over Celtic Park, land adjoining the stadium and at Westhorn and Lennoxtown.
So in effect the Club has
1 A new LOAN AGREEMENT
2 A COMBINED TOTAL OF £20.4M
Of which :
A – £6M IS A REVOLVING CREDIT FACILITY ie for buying PLayers etc
B – £14.4M IN OUTSTANDING LONG TERM LOANS
Which is due to be paid in full by:
C JULY 2019.
Non Current Liabilities are Loans which do not appear on Annual Returns until their final year.
You will note everything is secured against our assets and so therefore a risk.
Not that I think we will default.

FYI According to Christian Visser who I (strangely) trust more than the SMSM :-

People arrested around Ajax – Celtic by nationality:
Netherlands: 21
England: 4
Ireland: 2
Scotland: 0

10 of them were Feyenoord fans arrested before the match for .. ahem …. being Feyenoord fans

Also, the Amsterdam Politie report that a bunch of Ajax fans tried to mount an attack on Celtic fans from the Haringpakkerssteeg – a side street of the Damrak – when Celtic fans were on there way to the metro, but the police escort were immediately able to thwart the attack “without the need for violence”.

All cynicism aside, it does seem the (new-ish) chief of Police recognized that they messed up big time last time and – although we could moan about being fenced in etc. – they did genuinely try to make good on their promise to protect us from attack by Ajax hooligans

Can’t agree with you re: Izzy’s sending off. After he was yellow-carded he appeared to be even more revved-up. He got involved with one of their players when the ball had gone out for a throw and looked primed for a rammy. Not the way to go when you’re on a yellow card. Where was the captain or senior player when a quiet word with him was needed? Credit to the lads thereafter though. They dug in and dealt with most that Ajax could muster. Efe was a super-sub! Who’d have thunk it, eh!? Simunovic did OK considering the magnitude of the game. Fans shouldn’t be too critical of Forrest, Johansen or Commons as they were obviously under orders to contain and stifle the Ajax midfield. They did it pretty well. Not very exciting to watch I grant you, but it was what was required and they did it pretty well.

Had a wee laugh when Sutton said ‘I don’t want to speak too soon but Brown is doing OK….’

Caption: “Hey Joe, where you goin’ with that…that gun? in your hand?”

Izzy is a good left back. He gives 100%.
Let’s go with Efe and Simunovic in central defence.
Let’s also use Forrest on right, Commons in the middle and Griffiths on the left, Ciftci up front to get on the end of crosses and goal kicks.I’m chuffed with our performance last night. It will get better.

Aberdeen? Jonny Hayes is suspended and the sheep are away to Hearts and Inverness in their next two in the league (and away to Hibs in the cup)
Shinnie diving in the box and Rooney converting the penalties might soon need a plan B.
The sheep will be bleating in a fortnight.

I have to disagree about Izzy he let himself and his team down. Great performance until that first booking which was harsh. But on a yellow he stamped on their players foot, and then when the free kick was awarded he tried to kick the ball away?!?! Luckily it hit Brown (I think) but that could have been him off then, and his deserved second yellow he was nowhere near the ball.
Also agree with Monti on the second goal, Gordon at fault. I accept the delivery was good, but it was above everyones head so Gordon had eyes on it at all times. If someone attacks it and bullets a header in near post you say great delivery, great finish; look at Gordon’s body shape when it goes in (the centre of the goal FFS), he’s not making himself big at all, he was all over the place. Not a howler by any means but he is more culpable than the defence.

It was above everyone’s head because they didn’t attack the ball and one feeble attempt to jump for the ball by Boyata, nobody took on any responsibility to deal with it.

Glad Ralph singled out Efe…thought he was great.

As for Izzy…
Despite Ronny’s “explanations” ..Izzy should have been subbed after he got away with another potential yellow card before the second one hit him.It was obvious he was ” a bit hyper”…and I was screaming for him to be subbed.
Not clever Ronny.

It isn’t the change i’m questioning, just the timing of it. We should have waited until the ball wasn’t about to be fired in. Giving opponents over a minute to line up a free shot and with less noise from the crowd to put someone off might not have a good outcome.

Commons played well and every time it starts to look like he is getting on a bit and should be used as an impact player from the bench he seems to get a bit better, he might not have the engine to give 100% for 90 minutes but he would be a first team pick if it was up to me.

One thing I’ve said we should do better, from under Lennon, was our inability to score from corners/crossed free kicks but, credit where its due, under Deila we seem to be a real threat from those set pieces, Commons delivery is much improved and we are continuing to improve on them this season as well, showing that it wasn’t just Van Dijk and Denayer doing well. Boyata has a couple and Lustig almost got a second last night, Simunovic is big player and I can see him getting a handful of goals this season. It’s an area I would really like to see Biton doing better, for a guy thats usually the tallest outfield player on the pitch, I would like to see him imposing himself much more in the air.

A lot of positives from last nights game. I thought tactically we were spot on and on another night could easily have taken 3 points. We are too quick to slag the players when everything doesn’t go according to plan sometimes but I think they deserve credit for last nights game.

Over all a good performance and a good result some things still need to be sorted passing and tackling we still don’t seam to win 50/50 balls grain Gordon just lies he didn’t see the ball it was in the air above every player for fuck sake once again he came and stopped his fault no danger he needs dropped or sold but glad we put on a better show need to win next 2 home games and it could look good

I think it was an all round better performance than if late. The thing I noticed was with Commons on the free kicks and corners they were delivered with a bit of intent which was good to see. I agree that we didn’t see a lot of Simunovic which is perhaps a good thing. Brown still a bit too quiet for my liking but looks as if he is turning the corner. All in all a 7/10 performance!

Oh and forgot why has the Aberdeen player that kicked Lustig in the head not been pulled up that was worse than the red card and I think Aberdeen players wer sent out to target Lustig with some off the tackles on him.
Maybe I missed the compliance officer getting involved.

Monti. I know I’ve slipped some long way to be concerned about wee Jonny Hayes. Here’s why:

Manager of the Month McInnes didn’t see any problems with his player stomping on our player’s head and didn’t expect a red card to stand (but it did). Even the MSM couldn’t save them.
Hayes is important to the way the Sheep play, for good or bad so they have to do without him for two matches.
Otherwise, I’m not overly concerned about Aberdeen. Last year, they were ahead of us by more points than this much later than this and they will stop dropping points here and there, probably beginning with Hearts on Sunday. Once we get back on top we will stay there until May.
ps Monti, I’ll try not to slip down even further. Maybe I’ll start worrying about Partick Thistle next!

I thought it was a good performance away from home at a much better team than any team in Scotland ( except us ). I’m pretty sure that in Scotland our bigger budget and better class of player will tell over time ( as it does everywhere else ). Hopefully this game can be a catalyst for more consistent and better performances domestically. The better Aberdeen, Hearts and others get the better for us in terms of stiff competition and having to try harder to win domestic matches. We need the competition to keep the players sharp. Roll on the next game and another win

subs: Bailly/Boyata/Rogic/McGregor/Mackay-Steven/Stokes

Forrest is only effective on the right side. I think we should go with
Forrest/Commons/Griffiths
with Ciftci up front in the next few games. Johansen needs a good rest. He gives 100% and is knackered. He was our top player last year— don’t be too rough on the lad.
Rogic could also play in the middle of the three. I think Deila needs to time his subs better, especially in the front four.
In a previous post I meant that Aberdeen would “start” to drop points but I said “stop”. They haven’t dropped any yet but being unbeaten adds pressures of its own.

Any team would be quite happy with a 2-2 draw away to Ajax. Yes, its a pity we has didn’t win, but we should take it and be happy.

Commons showed his class, who needs to run about like a headless chicken if you can do the damage in the final third or provide the assist? The fact that he was nearly shown the door last season after all he has provided to the team speaks volumes about the state of affairs.

As soon as the defense knows each others names, we should see rapid improvement there.
However, Craig Gordon needs to be putting some influence into directing those guys too (ala Big Packie). Yes, he has also produced the goods – but why do the big game let downs occur?

Anyhoo, here is to an improved performance and getting back to the top of the league.

Ralph, stop copying my short posts from the day before and writing longer versions!!!
We’re on the way back guys, some of you almost seem disappointed that we didn’t get humped 5-0 so that you could say “told ye so”…come on, a 2-2 draw was a good result, and the performance was better than before…so stop moaning and take some positive pills, there was no lack of effort that I could see and that’s what we were demanding first and foremost. Interesting theory were you Terry Pratchetts proof reader?
That aside I agree 2-2 was a decent result given all the circumstances.
I would fancy us to beat them at home if we continue to improve.

A very unfair comparison to Lennon’s record when you consider the standard of opposition faced and the simple fact that 2 of those seasons were CL groups .

It’s the only thing we have to go off in recent times.
I was genuinely shocked at the GF/GA tally regardless as I expected it it be a wee bit more favouable to Lennys side given the players at his disposal.
What it boils down to is taking chances no matter the opposition.
All Systems have their strengths and weaknesses but I am fairly confident 4-2-3-1 is as solid as you can hope for whilst maintaining a threat.
The game in Amsterdam sort of proved it in a way.
We looked comfortable with 11 on the Park both in attack and defence.

6 goals can be shipped by just about any side in the Camp Nou when they are in the mood and certainly damages Lennons average.

Charlie,
Did we look comfortable with that system away to Malmo?

He was writer of fantasy novels Funky.

Just back from Amsterdam about a hour ago ,there for 6 days, before I went I would have bitten my hand off for a draw, but when we were 2-I UP i was hoping that Izzy would be subbed, especially as we now have another left back, when I read the team on line I was amazed and delighted that Commons was starting(should be first pick every game),suppose after he set up 2 goals he will be left out tomorrow.as that is a bad habit our fitness coach has,If crystal palace Don,t want Ledley we should get him back sand swap johansen for him,joe can pass the ball.ref was a homer seemed only to wan,t to yellow card celtic players all night, overall better performance than I EXPECTED,hey and was in lots of great specialist beer pubs, even some new one,s,and even tried some new beers,so hope we get through and so do brugge or anderlecht, for more great beers

My ratings
Gordon 5 poorest game as a celt
Lustig 6 defending has always been a bit ropey
boyata 7 better than some games
simovic 6 ok but needs games
Izzy 6 unlucky to be sent off,but needed to be subbed
BITTON 8 we will do well to hold on to him
Brown 5 usual bad passing looked slow compared to ajax players
Johansen 3 cant pass cant tackle never liked him
commons 7 our only creative central midfielder first name on team sheet
Griffiths 5 tries hard but the SPL is his level
subs Ambrose 5 came on played right back then centre back
Janko 3 not on long enough
Ciftci 3 no time but looks as slow as an OAP ON A PELICAN CROSSING,JUST DON,T UNDERSTAND THE SIGNING

Right Charlie Saiz, thanks for putting me straight with that one…he must have some imagination if he writes better fantasies than the MSM.
Now, on to tomorrow´s game. The confidence should be up now and I fully expect we’ll “get intae them” from the whistle. If we play basically the team we had out on Thursday I predict 4-0 or 4-1 for the bhoys. And if the sheep drop points it could end up a satisfying week. HH.

No worries happy to help.
I agree I think the tails will be up after a good result in Amsterdam.
I would like to see both Forrest and Johansen rested /benched and perhaps Rogic and McGregor given a start.
Both have great energy and are capable of a decent performance.

Before every match, I write down the 11 who I think should start. Allowing for injuries, suspensions and so on I try to measure my choices against Ronny’s. So far this year, our teams have never matched. Bet there’s no surprise— but here goes:
Ronny will pick

Gordon
Lustig/Boyata/Simunovic/Izzy
Brown/Bitton
Forrest/Johansen/Mackay-Steven
Griffiths

I would pick:
Gordon
Lustig/Ambrose/Simunovic/Izzy
Brown/Bitton
Forrest/Commons/Griffiths
Ciftci

I think we will be ok Sunday. 3-0 would be about right. A clean sheet would be a big boost as well.

Well…that was a nice performance wasn’t it? I seriously underestimated the bhoys with my 4-0 prediction. We scored 6, 1 disallowed, 1 penalty missed, crossbar hit, kept a clean sheet, and at least 3 great saves by the Dundee goalkeeper to keep them in the match (haha).
Whatever the problem was in the past few games (Johanson????!!!!) every single player seemed like they were up for this game. There was plenty of creativity, enthusiasm and some damn fine football on display. The mystery as to why they didn’t/couldn’t play like this against Malmo will remain in the dressing room until Ronny or Broonie writes his memoires. Right now I’m just happy to see them play with pride and self-belief. Well done you Bhoys in green. HH
