Celtic Diary Monday August 3: Game In doubt ? And New Balance Comments On Their Kit.

Before I start, I’d just like to pay my respects to sixties songstress and latterly tv presenter Cilla black, who passed away yesterday. she arrived at the gates of heaven, and St. Peter asked her

” What is your name and where are you from ? ”

Still, after Bobbi Brown the other day, and now Cilla Black, Jim White must be shitting himself as the big man puts together a game of snooker.

It’s a bit warm over in Baku at the moment, so much so that the itch Celtic are due to play on at tea time Wednesday is a little bit charred around the edges, and may not be playable.

Just to clarify, although it’s teatime over here, it will be 9.30 in the evening over there, so it should be a little cooler than some alarmist reports , but probably still warmer than it is in Glasgow.

Or in my dishwasher.

However, according to the Daily Mail;

reports there say the extremely hot weather has rendered 30 per cent of the pitch unplayable, with other sections of the surface uneven and rutted

Looks alright to me.

This , of course, won’t help the Celts play their high pressing short passing game, but to be fair, neither do the players at the moment, and there is the added risk of injury.

Rutted pitches can cause all sorts of physical damage. I remember watching an amateur game some years ago, and because the pitch resembled a ploughed furrow, and the game quickly descended into a farce,  I decided to head to the bar for a little light refreshment. Afterwards, I was so refreshed I fell over on the car park and hurt my knee.

So you can’t be too careful.

Celtic fly out to Baku today, and should be there in time for kick off. They are aware of the issues regarding the pitch, and are seeking  re-assurances about the playing surface.:

‘We are aware of the issue as regards the pitch in Baku. At the moment, we are seeking reassurances over the quality of the surface.’ said an unimaginative spokesman

The Mail quoted the rule book;

UEFA rules state that if there is any question of a match being called off, the Azerbaijani champions should notify Celtic before their departure from Glasgow Airport at 2pm this afternoon.

UEFA’s Article 11.01 states: ‘If the home club finds that a match cannot take place, for example because the field is not fit for play, the home club must notify the visiting club and the referee before their departure from home and the UEFA administration at the same time.

Neil McCann, the tortured soul who does the comedy squealing on sky TV consulted his rule book;

If Celtic don’t sort the state of the pitch out before the game they are denying Qarabag a clear, goal scoring opportunity.

McCann, who likes a rant at the expense of Celtic, was on form during Saturdays season opener against Ross County. Celtic won the game 2-0 with an early penalty from Leigh Grifiths, and a second from Stefan Johansen, but by including a goalkeeper and some defenders, the hoops were

guilty of denying Ross County a clear goal scoring opportunity

At least, thats all I could see. There was one instance when Craig Gordon ran out, bumped into Jackson Irvine outside his box, causing a somewhat theatrical roll when the County man realised he was not going to get to the ball, but that cannot be what McCann was on about,

Can it ?

Maybe he was discussing rules of another type …

Embedded image permalink

Willie Collum, who has improved considerably as a referee over the last two days or so, gave Gordon a yellow, for the foul, which was fair enough.

McCann, as he did last year with Derk Boerrifter and john Guidetti, seized the chance to harp on about another red card Celtic should have had, hilariously quoting from the new rule book which says you can be sent off for having the number 1888 on your shirt.

 Or something like that.

As ever, someone in the media who feels his views are important is shouting loud enough to keep his name out there in footballland, which means his contract must be going into it’s last year, and therefore is up for renewal.

And as ever, he’s full of shite.

There are, according to FIFA, seven offences that are “cautionable ” . Eight if you count “being Gary Hooper “

a player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he:

1. Is guilty of unsporting behaviour.

2. Shows dissent by word or action.

3. Persistently infringes the Laws of the Game.

4. Delays the restart of play.

5. Fails to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick, free kick or throw-in.

6. Enters or re-enters the field of play without the referee’s permission.

7. Deliberately leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission.

Unsporting behaviour is a reckless tackle, a technical tackle, to impede an attack, dissent, handball, holding or simulation. Other examples are verbal distraction of a player, changing places with the goalkeeper without permission, and using a deliberate trick while the ball is in play to circumvent law 12, rule 3. Look it up if you care. I don’t.

Unless you are a substitute or substituted player-presumably still on the bench, where there are only three. Four if you count being “Gary Hooper.

There are three offences for which a substitute or substituted player can be cautioned and shown the yellow card if he:

1. is guilty of unsporting behaviour

2. shows dissent by word or action

3. delays the restart of play

There are seven offences for which a player, substitute or substituted player can be sent off and shown the red card if he: ( eight, Gary Hooper, etc. )

1. Is guilty of serious foul play. Any player who lunges at an opponent when challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent, is guilty of serious foul play.

2. Is guilty of violent conduct. A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball. Violent conduct may occur either on the field of play or outside its boundaries, whether the ball is in play or not. He is also guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against a team-mate, spectator, match official or any other person.

3. Spits at an opponent or at any other person.

4. Denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area). There are two sending-off offences that deal with denying an opponent an obvious opportunity to score a goal: If a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball. If a player denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick (direct or indirect) or a penalty kick. Criteria for deciding when to penalise for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity: The direction of the play. The location of the foul. The proximity of the player to the ball. The probability of controlling the ball. The location and number of opponents. The opportunity for the attempt on goal.

5. Denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick.

6. Uses offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures.

7. Receives a second caution in the same match.

Let’s look at the criteria for defining an obvious goal scoring opportunity;

 The direction of the play.

Irvine was heading towards the left flank, he was attempting to round the keeper.

The location of the foul.

Right hand side of the box, maybe twenty yards from the goal line.

The proximity of the player to the ball.

he was in possession, but it was travelling at a pace which meant he probably was losing control

The probability of controlling the ball.

He’s a Ross County player, for fucks sake.

The location and number of opponents.

Virgil van Dijk was steaming towards the goal line. He would, in all probablilty have made it to the line before the ball.

The opportunity for the attempt on goal.

Irvine may have been able to reach the ball and attempt a shot. However, given the pace of the ball he would have found it difficult to hit the target first time, and had he taken time to control it , van Dijk would certainly have covered it.

Conclusion ?

After careful consideration of all the available images, comments and other evidence, and carefully sifting, analysing and evaluating these over a not inconsiderable period of time, I can only say, in conclusion, without doubt and fear of recrimination, Neil McCann is a tit.

As far as the rest of the game goes, Celtic won. The players appeared to have switched off after an hour or so, but when there’s a difficult journey and an important game ahead midweek, they can be forgiven for not bursting a gut to win a game that’s pretty much already won. no-one wants to see any injuries, or any rash red cards, so the more professional attitude is welcome.

 Ronny, I said it’s welcome.

Ronny ? Chill, man…

“You always want to play better and today we played ok for 55-60 minutes but the last 30 minutes were sloppy and messy. We weren’t together as a team and lost the ball all over the pitch and that was a little bit disappointing.

“ It was two-and-a-half days since we played and it was a big match with a lot of intensity and you could see a lot of the other players were tired and there were a lot of changes.”

There were a lot of misplaced passes, there was a recurrence of the old trouble, as Celtic failed to capitilise on corner after corner, and there was a little nervousness at the back, but again, there’s an important game on Wednesday, and at this stage of the season, it’s only results that  count.

 Google images isn’t working today.

I said “count “

As you know, Ive been in correspondence over the quality and workmanship of the New Balance kits. As you know, i’ve been waiting for a reply from the company and the club.

The company have replied, and i reproduce it below.

Make your own mind up if you want to buy their tat.

I have.

My own opinion is that it’s difficult to decide whether it’s the attitude or the product which is worse. , and from now on I’ll be digging out the old umbro tops, as a testament to when kits lasted longer than a month.

And you could wash them and everything…

first, my questions ?

Morning.
Thank you for gettting in touch.

I write a popular Celtic themed daily blog on one of the bigger supporters websites. www.etims.net “The Diary ” , as its known, has recieved a number of complaints, including pictures , about a number of issues with the new kit that New Balance has provided for the club.

My interest in the kits began when the man who did the deal with New balance offered no reassurances at a fans meeting at Celtic Park back in May, regarding the quality of the product, the guarantees in place of quality and i was concerned that he had not taken samples to test them.
This concern grew from the disastrous first Nike top of a few years ago which lost it’s colour when washed.
 The concerns include;

Poor , thin  ” cheap looking ” material where threads pull after a single wash. The material is not standing up to sportswear demands, and appears to be designed as a fashion accessory.
 Inconsistent sizings, especially for children
Basic white socks with the childrens home kits , instead of the hooped variety available for adults
Sponsors logos peeling off  .
Whilst my concern has been primarily round celtic kits, it appears that the company also has a deal with Stoke City to provide kit. Similar issues are present there, one fan even bought a top with the letter C missing from the clubs name on the badge
Now, New Balance has to be commended for it’s policy of changing the faulty goods, but the support feel a little more care and attention should have been paid to detail. There is a feeling that the price, whilst comaprable to other clubs, is too high. Especially given the inferior quality.
There is a feeling that little care is being given to the quality of the product, and most claim that New Balance have little interest in dealing with the problem.
I am also concerned about the use of phrases such as “pioneering technology ” in the marketing of the kits.
At this moment, New Balance have not provided value for money, and they have not inspired consumer confidence. There has been no public acknowledgement of any “bad batch ” or any specific problem with the kits. What concerns me is that the company appear to be trying to ride out the problem , and hope it goes away, without doing anything to allay supporters fears.
I would welcome, and would publish, your thoguhts on the problems so far, your plans for thise affected, and the action taken to prevent a repeat.
We need an apology, an assurances on subsequent quality, and advice for those who have bought the affected tops, a considerable number of whom bought it to support the club, but have taken the substandard product as just “one of those things ” .
Customer relations is an essential part of business, and emails i have seen suggest an attitude from the company toward the customer that “it’s our own fault “, and again this is an aspect which needs to be looked at.
For example, one customer was told to wash it inside out at a low temperature. It’s a sports shirt. not a silk blouse. It will get soiled while being used.
 Over to you.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and i look forward to your response
 Well, here it is;

Many thanks for your email and continued support of Celtic Football Club.

I would like to reassure you that New Balance, in partnership with Celtic, share an unparalleled dedication towards providing fans and players with apparel  that is both high in quality and inspirational in design. The rate of sales for the new kits are performing favorably versus previous years which we believe represents a positive start to the relationship between Celtic fans, the club and New Balance.

The kit fans buy is exactly the same as the jerseys worn by the players. Rest assured, if the quality wasn’t up to the standards required by Celtic and other iconic clubs such as Liverpool, Porto and Sevilla – the players would pick up on it immediately. This has not happened.

We do take all fan and merchandise enquiries very seriously. Yes, there have been returns which vary in nature but nothing more than previous years with other kit manufacturers and currently the volume of returns remains within normal tolerances.  Many of these have been down to washing and drying instructions not being followed properly but Celtic and New Balance have still offered an exchange or a refund for all legitimate complaints.  As we strive to deliver the highest level of customer service, we are continuing to monitor the nature of all returns and carry out regular product testing in relation to these.

Together with our partnership clubs, we aim to do everything we can to provide the expected level of service for fans.  With this in mind, we would reiterate that if anyone experiences a problem with a New Balance product you should return it to the point of purchase.

Thanks once again for your email.

to which I replied, this morning….

So, effectively, if it’s not up to standard take it back ? What about improving the standard, which is not up to that of other companies Celtic have been associated with ? what have you done to attempt to find out why the tops are of poor quality ? what steps have you taken to ensure the childrens kits will be issued with the hooped socks ?
What you appear to be saying is that although there have been complaints, they are not sufficient for the company to be concerned about. what you should be concerned about is that i have yet to hear from anyone who is delighted with the quality of the product, and impressed with the company customer service,
It’s irrelevant whether the players complain or not. They do not have kids tormenting them for new kits which cost a fair percentage of a familiy budget. They do not have to replace a dodgy top which has began to become unravelled.
Frankly, the level of product, and the “customer service ” shown so far by new balance is not befitting an association with an “iconic ” club such as Celtic.

I’ll keep you posted with any replies.

Meanwhile, with all the hassle Celtic fans have been getting from the police, and also to deal with one or two issues regarding stewarding at the ground, we hear of a man , a quiet and polite clerk and non matchdays, who has made it his sole purpose in life to make the match day experience a pleasure for one and all.

After eating a scotch pie that was left in the microwave for to long, he developed strange powers, incuding an overdose of common sense and an ability to deal practically and calmly with safety issues.

Ladies and gentleman, bhoys and ghirls, we give you Glasgows latest and greatest superhero…..

Andy Ritchie, one of the finest scottish players I ever saw, was in Saturdays picture. He left Celtic to join morton, who all of a sudden became a top side! Ritchie, though , had his demon, and joins the ranks of that great Sciottish side who would have won the World cup if the pubs were shut.

Whats the story behind this picture, of another great Scottish player who would have been in that side ?

Is that wee Jinky giving two fingers to the press after Scotland beat England.
Prior to the match he was on the receiving end of some bad publicity from the media and this was his erudite and dignified reply.
Willy Ormond didn’t seem to mind.

I think!

“The players havent complained about the jersey”…….am i wrong in thinking the players are using a fresh new shirt for every game…..i doubt you’d find an issue with a shirt after 90 odd minutes on its first wear.

I know for a fact it wont be the same jersey the players wear as its commonly known that the makers provide a much thicker and better quality product to the actual players, no matter what brand it is. In fact I recall Kitbag (online shirt seler) selling players jerseys for a higher price, and this is because it was thicker better quality. The companies stretch the material for the consumer product to get the max profit margin. I was going to buy the bumble bee new strip, but given the quality issues I wont be forking out £55 for an inferior product.

I used to think that too but I asked the question in the dressing room on a stadium tour a couple of years back and was told they get 3-4 tops to last the season.

Probably on Lawell’s instruction 🙂

That’s the wee man giving the press at Hampden a two fingered salute at the end of Scotland – England game. He had a great game that day, coming after his little escapade in the rowing boat and the hacks reporting of it. 2-0 Scotland.

It seems to me that Craig Gordon doesn’t have much confidence in those in front of him. Against Qarabag he almost did the same thing but thought better of it and went back. On Wednesday the defence is going to have to play a lot better and Ronny Deila is going to have to get them better organised, at times it seems they are not concentrating. Not good.

Great diary. Neil McCann is an incredible tit. i loved the fact that Mulgrew almost reluctantly pointed out to him that ‘the ball was also moving’ when he showed the freeze frame of the exact point when Gordon made contact with Irvine’s hair bobble.
On a more serious note is it just me or is no one else concerned at quality of our play? Do we seriously believe we ‘belong’ in the CL with the players we have presently? you can say Celtic only did what they had to do on Saturday but they should have destroyed RC at a canter not leaving it to Gordon to save the points for us.

Don’t think it’s confidence Tam, he just gets bored and wants to join in – albeit at the wrong moments.
Saturday could have gone either way with the colour of the card but I’ve still to hear any word on why the County player escaped even a yellow for the foul on Griffiths.

“The kit fans buy is exactly the same as the jerseys worn by the players.”

No it’s not. I was in the store before the game on Saturday and the shirts on the racks weren’t even the same as the one on the mannequin! There was a notable difference in the weight and feel of the material on the dummy (I suspect THAT is a match shirt). As my son pointed out the hoops were even a different shade of green!!

That comment alone leads me to lose all faith in their product and tells you everything you need to know about their assumption that we’ll swallow any old crap.

Sorry the Dairy has to be on Route Negative to day but it appears the pressing issues of the day are far from positive. It is not only unbelievable but criminal that an insidious small minded “football analyst” should be given such positive exposure when an intelligent gentleman journalist like Jim Spence is hounded from public media to seek his livelihood in private freelance. Not that that will be a backward step for Jim in any way. It is just the opening he needs to make his honest and worth while views more widely heard and expose the verminous arse-lickers for what they are – long tongued rats. The lack of any hint of decent quality among the current breed of analytic quadrupeds is a significant sign of the disdain in which broadcasters hold sports fans once they have their cash. Thankfully I do not have to listen to, watch or read any of their drivel having never entertained Sky and long banned newspapers from even stepping on my driveway. I am a CTV fan 🙂

I completely sympathise and understand your being shirty with New Balance. I have not had the pleasure of actually seeing one of the kits in the flesh as it were but your description reminds me of a few pairs of breeks I climbed into in my schooldays. One could say they were a loomfull of threads held together by the sound patchwork of caring maternal hands. I must say, they allowed for great freedom when messing about in the river as they washed well and were not worth the bother of having to take care with them – oh, and the patches did not fall off or fade in the boiler. Never mind, Ralph, you sound as if you are on the cards to succeed that sweet boy, Gok Wan – wan ae these days. So bend your elbow, hold your hips and you will be almost there.

I feel somewhat tainted by the negativity surrounding the game on Wednesday. I refrain from having too definitive an opinion on the team’s performances because, no matter the quality of TV pictures or audio commentaries, I am not convinced I see the overall picture from an armchair. However, there are sufficient signs that even a blind man can not ignore. Our passing at times is nothing short of deplorable and I am afraid any half decent team will use this weakness to run us ragged and kill us stone dead. It is plain for all to see that we play a pretty stereotype kind of football at the back with far to much time spent passing the ball around in no man’s land. To my mind, this brings on a certain lethargy in the defence which will prove fatal at a higher level. Craig Gordon is proving a God-send but he is not God himself just yet so can not be relied on to always get us out of jail. And we get locked up in defence far too regularly. Finally there is the forwards enigma. I believe we have goal scorers (I am not convinced about Ciftci) up front and Griffiths is proving himself no end right now. But, how in the name of all that is holy, can we only put one in fifty attempts into the net? Someone mentioned we should have put Ross County to the sword by half time on Saturday. How many times has this been replicated this season already and how many outrageous times throughout last season? Finally, why oh why can no one have a shot from further than two yards. At least three times there were perfectly good opportunities to “have a go” from anything up to twenty five yards or more. But did anyone attempt a shot? Not a one. Even GMS’ pass to Johansen for the second goal could have been blocked in a crowded penalty box. Yet, GMS had a perfectly good opening himself to blast the ball at the goals from about twenty yards or so. I accept many will go astray – more shooting practice might improve that aspect of the players’ game – but for heaven’s sake at least try now and then instead of trying to walk everything across the line. Kris Commons is probably the lone exception even though not a few goals have come from the unexpected efforts of others from long distance.

Now, if these are blatant and extremely worrying aspects of our game for someone looking in from beside the fireplace, how much more of a concern must it be for those seeing it full on in the flesh? So, I am tending towards the realism of those who do not see us as a CL club right now and perhaps for a fairly long time to come, but rather a dominant force in a pretty low standard domestic league that just might make a couple of shekels here and there in the European markets, more likely EUROPA Cup than CL. I am convinced Quarabag will determine just exactly what level we are at. I will approach the game with realistic optimism and be as disappointed as f…..if we lose.

My immediate reaction to the quiz photo was Jinky telling Ormond where to go with his linesman’s flag but I did not think he would have had the shirt off for that. So, reading the other comments, I concur that it is the 2-0 drubbing of England after wee Jimmy’s (in)famous trip doon the water. I remember Denis Law being interviewed about it many years later and admitting Jimmy was much less to blame than many others including himself who kept their traps shut (how surprising) and left the wee man to take all the flack on his tod from management and a gloating media. Never mind, Jimmy, we all know now who reached the big blue ocean even though you were denied the full and proper recognition in the BLUE of Scotland.

Prayer for Cilla. Unlike our guest of dishonour deadhead67, I do not disrespect the dead. Things are never simply black or white. R.I.P.

Jinky advising the press he had two oars when he started.having been at the last two games the team appear to be going backward, thank God for Gordon.
Warangal and Ross County are probably of the same standard and we’re playing away from home.
The team look disinterested bar Gordon and Johansen, let’s hope they avoid another disaster in Baki.

Do you think Barcelona never win 1-0 or 2-0? Even they have days where only the goal(s) are the highlight of the match. It’s possible the bhoys felt they had done enough to get the 3 points and so slipped down a gear…no reason to risk injuries before the match on Wednesday. While we’d all love them to come roaring out the traps and play scintillating football for 90 minutes, it’s not gonna happen. The team is still a work in progress, and it is progressing. If we can win 2-0 playing not so well then the signs are that we can do some damage to better teams when all the players are switched on. I was happy with the victory and that nobody got injured..now I’m expecting a different (better) Celtic performance against Qarabag. I feel certain we´ll score more than 1 goal, and I just can’t see them scoring enough to put us out. HH.
