Celtic Diary Friday May 1: Guest Writer, Grumpy McMoan.

To appease anyone who is wondering why the passing of Keith Harris, the ventriloquist, has not been mentioned in the diary before now, I have to say a few words.

Well, it’s not like Orville will. His agent says he’s feeling “empty inside “.

The cancer got Harris last week, unusual for an entertainer these days, as its usually operation Yew Tree that gets them.

Happy now ?

Celtic can ease that horribly niggly ( can I say niggly ?) feeling that the players are making the fourth consecutive title a little more difficult to secure than it should be by beating Dundee tonight in Glasgow.

That would mean that either Celtics next point, or Aberdeen dropping a point, would see the champagne flowing and the songs being sung.

Dundee are no pushovers, and have performed admirably against the hoops this term.

But thats not whats worrying me.

It’s what Kris commons said;

“It wasn’t like a couple of years back when Rangers were in the league and we thought, ‘We need to get back on level points or we need to win to pull three points away’.

“It always felt very tight and every game had a massive importance, whereas I’ve never got that sort of feeling of, ‘Listen, we need to win this game no matter what because if we don’t Aberdeen are going to be hot on our tails’.

Is it eight points the lead ?

One Aberdeen win over Celtic would have reduced that to two points. Fair enough, it never happened, but there is no room for complacency.

It’s just that when I first walked through the door there was pressure on winning every single game we played.

There still is. I’m on the point of spotting why it took Ronny so long to get that through to him.

If Neil Lennon wants him, he can have him.

Aberdeen’s development squad won their league yesterday, as Celtic failed to beat Falkirk. The gap is closing, and we need to be on the ball.

By the way, John Guidetti, censured yesterday by the SFA for referring to himself as a Super Swede who puts the ball in the netti, has had his wage demands of around 3m euros a year met by Sporting Lisbon.

Cheerio.

So, tonight, Ronny Deila should give them both the night off.

Along with Tonev, Mubarak, Zaluska and Boerrigter. Tell them to ring their mates and ask if they know of any jobs going.

And pick players who have the right attitude.

Gordon, Matthews, van Dijk, Denaayer, Izaguirre, Brown , Bitton, Armstrong, Johansen, Mackay Steven and Griffiths.

The bench should contain Fasan, Ambrose, Tierney, Forrest, Macgregor and Scepovic and whichever other development player has caught the eye.

Celtic to win by the odd goal, with Griffiths as first goalscorer ? Thats how i see it going, or rather hope how it goes, but Dundee were the first team to apply pressure on Celtic high up the pitch, the way we are supposed to do to other teams.

Only Celtic can’t handle it if other teams do it to us.

Bit miserable today, Ralph ? -Ed

Can’t go to the game tonight, work won’t let me -ralph

While the rantometer is cranked up, lets find something else to moan about.

Peter, Peter ?

Can I have a word ?

What the fuck is this all about ?

We finally encourage supporters to bring their kids to the game, spend a bloody fortune in getting them there, and now you won’t let a game against a team that pretends to be the team that screwed our club out of millions of pounds count on the season book ?

And you called them Rangers.

You specifically called them Rangers.

You gave them the recognition that they wanted.

how about, and here’s a novel and refreshing idea, you look after the supporters who come to the game week in and week out, with their families, priority over the supporters who only want to  come back when ” Rangers ” re appear , in whatever form ?

I’ve got a word for it.

It’s called loyalty.

We’ve shown it.

Now it’s your turn.

Hang on, better lighten the mood a bit.

See, the truth is, I’m annoyed with my goldfish. I cleaned his tank out this morning, and he obviously didn’t want the hassle. First of all he threw a tantrum on the draining board, and now he’s just lying on top of the water sulking.

Took me ages to do as well.

Ach , lets try to smile. It is the weekend.

Fair enough, pay tribute to the greatest Celt ever, but check the spelling first.

Manchester City under 13s ?  I think one of them may have bought his ID at a bar in Wythenshawe.

Neil McCann has walked away from his job as a coach at Dunfermline. The club issued a statement;

“We lost out on a budgeted third Scottish Cup tie, which as it turned out would have increased our income by £100,000. As a result of our disappointing league finish, we will lose out on £50,000 of budgeted income from the football authorities. Furthermore, £50,000 has been spent on legal fees trying to extricate our club from the lease at Pitreavie.

“However, the success of the Centenary Club Lifeline, the continuing support of the fans at the gate and better than expected commercial and hospitality income mean that we anticipate a trading loss (before depreciation) this season in the region of £250,000; more or less in line with our budget.

“It is now clear that the significant investment which was made in the playing squad this season to try to ensure promotion has not paid off. Clearly, our club simply cannot afford to invest in the playing squad at the same level next season.”

All they had to do was listen to him talk about football on Sky TV, and they’d have spotted he was, er, ill equipped.

Can you imagine a motivational team talk from this lot ?

I hear Ed Miliband is visiting Glasgow tonight. Is the reception committee ready ?

Anyway, enjoy yourselves at the game.

Yesterdays picture was taken at half time  at a game played at celtic Park in the seventies, and it was some sort of charity event that took place.

This stand here, and feel free to reminisce, was called the Jungle by supporters.

But what was the name of it that appeared on your ticket ? ( If you had one ? )

The whole the league should have been won long ago is nonsense, Aberdeen deserve great credit for their challenge this season. If you take away the games against us, they have only lost 3 times and that potentially could be champions material and that is why the league is not won yet. I bet if you go back and look at our points total over the last 8 years you will find that this season has been a good one ( over 90 points if we win our remaining games).

I agree with Ewanbhoy Aberdeen deserve credit for their league performance this year and the fact they won the development league says they have some handy talent coming through the ranks. Enough about the sheep lets rattle in four tonight and hammer Aberdeen next week to put them in their place and show them who are the champions. Hail hail KTF

We put no pressure on the sheepshaggers, and when msm got a sniff of us losing the league the scum in black that used to benefit the zombies came into full swing, the only team that tried againdt them were dundee 3-1 up and the sheep get a dodgy pen and a goal that was well offside,we are or should be mile better than those journeymen, but we have a tw at as a manager, our goals for are way down because we refuse to play 2 up front, and kept our top scorer out of the side to accommodate a player we sent on loan last season,

Well it made me laugh, Ralph. Kris Commons; every time he opens his mouth shite comes out, he is a complete embarrassment when he is on the telly yet the club let him represent the team time and time again. You’d wonder why they would allow that to happen and then you read the Sevco clause they have for our young fans and I won’t mention what they called that dead club. Are our club’s policies written by Kris Commons as well? And why are our board intent on reviving a Dead Parrot?

Our finishing has been below par most of the season and the reason for that in my opinion is not the System or who Ronny has chosen to play the lead role.
It is purely down to the level of player we now have up front at Celtic.
None of them are what I would call European class.
Players who bury the one chance in 3 they get.
If we had had that standard of player this Season the League would have been won by now regardless of a very good showing from Aberdeen.
Defensively this has been our best Season in the League in a decade that bodes well for Europe in the Summer if we keep hold of our best and add a bit of quality up top.
Punt Stokes Boerrigter Pukki and Balde and spend on a proven finisher.

Aye, and there is a few more on that bench that need to go too.

I’ll say this Charlie, which I know-you-know but I want to state it anyway, about scoring 1 in 3.
There is a big difference between scoring 1 in 3 against say Kilmarnock away and Juventus away; and we are definitely not converting enough domestically.
The same is true on the inverse. It is a lot easier to defend at Kilmarnock away than it is at Juventus away.

If we can maintain those defensive levels domestically WHILE increasing our offensive conversion ration – then we can start talking about Europe as a real and viable arena for us and a top European striker.

100% with you on all that Half this is why I was not concerned about the early form when we changed Formation because I believed it would take 6 months to a Season to start getting it right.
Defensively we are nowhere near as naive as we were in the Qualifiers the Juve game proved that home and away even with 10 men we managed to look solid enough.
The point is and I know your aware we simply do not have the class needed up top to take on the better sides in Europe we need to upgrade at the pointy end of the attack.
Whilst I don’t think we are ever going to bag a Henke in this era (within our wage structure and price range) I don’t think a Sutton or Hartson are out of reach.
£5-7m and we can secure the services of someone in that class range.
We need a target man someone who can boss the defenders whilst also remaining a real threat on fewer chances because as we both know the higher the level the less you tend to get in a game.
If we are selling at over £10m for our best as we have done in recent windows then I don’t see why an exception cannot be made for genuine quality coming back the way?
The system we now deploy is deployable both domestically and in Europe so there is no change of mentality needed playing either?
Press high, break fast and defend as a unit be it on the front foot or back the aim remains the same.
All we need is the quality at the business end to take a higher percentage of what we are currently managing.

Exactly.

I’ve being saying we need a smart tall Center Forward with good feet, and the build of a brick-layer for way too long (I know they aren’t cheap);
and don’t get me started on Left Back cover…

When we are punting guys for 6 to 10 Mill consistently, a 6 Mill Center Forward isn’t too much to ask for.

We have bedded in a new manager changed our philosophy and approach to fitness and tactics.
These thing take time to bed in.
Europe is not where you should be judging this process as we have failed to seriously invest for Europe and are going backwards in that respect.
The League is your bread and butter it is there you judge your own strengths and weaknesses.
The System we deploy in the League will be the same one we deploy in Europe it would appear that in the League that System is now something our players have grasped and are comfortable with.
The result last night and the manner in which we took Dundee apart especially in the build up to the second goal is proof of this.
If we are serious about the big League in Europe then Peter Lawwell and the Board had better get serious with the amount we are willing to pay and the standard of player we are looking to invest in.
If we don’t then don’t expect miracles in the Champions League because we are a long way off spending what those sides are willing to spend.
We sell our best at over £10m and we buy our best at under £5m.
That cannot continue if you hope to improve your side and your position within the Big League.

Europe is the yardstick, I thought we had turned the corner and looked decent against Inter but watching Wolfsberg destroy them withhout getting out of 2nd gear put things into perspective.

It was could have / should have for us against Inter.
We showed massive improvement (only way was up), but we lost that one at home really – when we should have taken them to the cleaners.
The Virgil sending off was what we can always expect with referees when we play away in Italy.

Doc is right on the yardstick, but League has to come first. Plus Wolfsburg would have nailed us I fear on that. However, as a group we for the most part are improving. What happens in the summer will be defining.

Loved that win last night.

We don’t spend like a European side we spend like a mid table Championship side.
If you think that’s good enough to compare with Europes Elite you are deluded Doc.
Our last major signing at Celtic was Broonie 7 year ago from Hibs.
Wolfburg just paid just over £22m for Schurrle from Chelsea along with De Bruyne in the January for £18m.

Aye Ralph, that is a wee bit of a moan.
Personally I hope Commons comes off the bench and gets a double tonight. Hopefully Grif will have buried them before then anyway.

Celtic should not be putting the name of our former foes on any of our literature, never mind our pricing.

I see the SFA are up to their usual. What a bunch of Huns. Dirty Huns. Dirty Cheating Huns. Dirty cheating match-fixing Huns.
See nothing if it is a head-butt. Give a slap on the wrist on illegal betting against own team – isn’t that match fixing? Deny seeing cheating in front of everyone’s faces.
But WHOA IS ME, can you imagine repeating songs (whilst abroad) said on the terraces??!!
BURN HIM, BURN HIM!!

Anyhoo….go on the Celts. Let’s put this league in the bag and take it home to Paradise.

A Celtic player singing sevco are deid is offensive and therefore a clear breach of the rules, if only he’d done something non-offensive, like sent a picture of Mohammed engaged in a gay sex act. That is OK in sfa land.

I guess it is ok for 40,000 Sevco fans to sing (on national TV) racist and sectarian songs about our ethnic origins, religion and history and NEVER be punished but my or my, Guidetti or Griffiths singing wee nursery rhymes….tut tut. What hypocrites our league officials are! I am proud to be of Fenian stock and don’t care about knee deep in blood but I’m glad our fans don’t riot (Barcelona/Woverhampton/Manchester and more)like Attila and his hordes…that’s where their name comes from, a result of their fans’ chosen behaviour. They have given the name to themselves. “Zombie” by the way is both accurate and gives no offence: since zombies don’t exist, do they no?

Ralph

Moan away. It is hard to disagree with any of it.

You nearly got your 7 tonight but it still does not justify the Sky Friday night fiasco. It looks more and more that fans simply do not matter to the club. PL can rant till he is blue in the face but he ought to take a look in the mirror now and then and see how red it should be with embarrassment. I am convinced the SPFL and SFA just do not have mirrors.

It was the bit of the hammering we have been waiting for tonight but I have to say part of me is unhappy it had to be Dundee who have not been our worst opponents this season.

I can not remember what way the weathervane pointed over the Jungle even though I stood there many, many times – not my favourite position I confess. It tended to produce cricked necks on Sunday mornings. I remember it best as “the Hayshed”.

A good night, the team looked as good as I can imagine it. Great movement and passing. I have a gut feeling that Jackie’s bunch might come good today.

Devoy45

My gut feeling proved correct. Jackie’s lads came through for us. Congratulations to Ronnie and the Bhoys and those who stood by them all year. I ate some humble pie and came on board and now like what I see. Auld fart that I am I had to get my head around 4-2-3-1 and understand how 4 attackers are better than two forwards and that fitness was the key to making it all work. That fitness took some time and made me nervous. Hats off to Charlie Saiz who kept insisting that we would win the title “by ten points or more.” He said that when there weren’t many of us believed it. We were thinking Deila=Mowbray/Barnes/Brady/Macari. I now think Deila can take us places and maybe help us make an impact in Europe. It has been a roller-coaster ride. Shame about the Treble but well done Bhoys, well done to the support on this website. Even Doubles have been rare during long patches of our history so I’ll gladly take this one.

Royal Baby? 3.5 million children live in poverty in the UK, 220,000 of them in Scotland. In Scotland, 59% of those children live in households with at least one parent working. In the UK 66% of those children live in households with a working parent. Celebrate the birth of a Royal child by donating to any charity that fights child poverty. Maybe one day, we can live in a society where all children have opportunity, not just a privileged, pampered elite.I care more about the poor than the rich, Fourth in line to the throne? Who says? I think we’ll have a republic by then.

Meanwhile, Hail, hail. Championees!
Good health and joy to you all.

I think the game against Dundee was a culmination of everything Ronny and Johnny were trying to install.
We were playing like Champions should do.
We need now to see the colour of the Boards money in the Summer and the Investment that’s needed to take this side furher in Europe this time round.

I don’t like tae say “Told yeez so” but, told yeez so!!! Look back far enough and you’ll see my post saying we’d win the League by at least 8 points and at least one of the Cups (had a terrible gut feeling that we wouldn’t be ALLOWED tae win a treble. I mildly scolded those of little faith (and short patience) for the way they were brutally attacking Ronnie..sincerely hope they are all ashamed of themselves…is it no enough that the press and tv/radio media have a full-time job following our players around tae dig up dirt and create a cloud of negativity around the club?..we don’t need to do it for them. too many fans paid lip service to “having patience”..but then were totally impatient, expecting us to pick up where Neil Lennon left off…ffs, look at Man Utd when Fergie left…even with their riches, Moyes couldnae just pick up like Fergie was still there. I couldnae be more delighted that Ronnie failed to fail for the Daily Dump and the rest of the “impartial” media. I look forward to next season and discovering what new honest mistake the brethren come up with to try to stop our treble.
Hail, hail and God Bless Ronnie Daila.

On the subject of “huns”..in all my life singing or hearing the word, I never associated it with religion. For me and everyone around me it was a direct reference to the old Rangers’ supporters because of their general behaviour and attitude, a way of telling them they weren’t wanted just like Attila’s mob as they invaded Europe. Now ‘cos they cannae find anything truly sectarian about our fans, the singers of “up to our knees in fekking debt” actually have the brass neck (and the influence) to get “huns” branded as offensive. What’s next?..we canae call them “blue nose” (Smurfs are offended), or “Orcs”? For peepul who “don’t care” about not being liked they sure are a might sensitive.
