Celtic Diary Monday April 27: Griffiths To Open Sports Shop

Just selling match balls.

The hard working forward notched another hat trick yesterday as Celtic overran Dundee United in the second half of  what was starting to look like a difficult game.

And theres another match ball he can get hold of after the one Efe Ambrose skited over the bar against Aberdeen last year was seen re-entering the atmosphere over Glasgow last night;

It’s Sky, so you can’t actually see the fireball, but we can take their word for it.

I ditched Sky sports, and yesterday went wading into a stream for entertainment. Though had I still been with Sky, I’d have been using  one of these…

Incidentally, the back up button is to be renamed the Fuck Up button , and when you press it, you get live coverage  of a second Rangers board meeting

Griffiths was also on fire yesterday, and his two goals were crowned when Gary Mackay Steven worked his way toward the penalty area and was chopped down to earn the penalty that evened up the scandal of last weeks penalty not being awarded.

The experts can now point to Collums mistaken award and say it’s proof of these things evening out over a season, whilst “non experts” know that any mistakes in our favour tend to come when they don’t affect the outcome of a game.

Manager Ronny Deila is now fully versed in the peculiarities of Scottish refereeing, and spoke honestly about the incident;

“I agree (decisions even up over a season) but what happened last Sunday was not normal.

“This is a totally different thing. I rarely talk about referees’ decisions but last Sunday was a thing that really affected the game.

“We had full control over the game, we were 1-0 up and we had assistants on the goal-line also so I don’t think you can say that this was the same as what happened today.

“It was a totally different thing. And the cup of course, is one game, so it is different.

“If it was wrong today it would not have affected the game.

“If it was only 1-0 I could understand it could be an issue. I don’t mind if we win 2-0 or 3-0, we deserved to win the game.”

 The result means that Celtic now need four points from four games, the first of which is on Friday night, in front of the Sky cameras, whilst Aberdeen don’t play until Saturday.

It’ll give the game that empty sort of feeling you get after a European first leg tie, where nothing is settled and no matter how well you do, you can’t really celebrate because theres not that confirmation that puts it to bed.

If both sides win, it does set up a potentially memorable day at Pittodrie though, the following week… It’s what Griffiths wants;

 “We could win it while we are in the house next weekend but if you asked everyone they would love to do it up at Pittodrie.

Now that he’s staying in the house at weekends, it might be worth a first goalscorer and hat trick double on him in two weeks time….

Griffiths has proved that hard work and discipline need to be combined with talent if you are to succeed.

Non Penalty Goals per 90 minutes this season…

And he will go from strength to strength.

For what was supposed to be a one horse race, the title won’t be secured until May, and whilst unlikely, it could still go all the way to the end. All the pressure is on Celtic, while Aberdeen have nothing to lose.

I think, on balance, I agree with Leigh…

However, we’ll just try and win it as quickly as possible. It doesn’t matter where we do that.

After the game, the players had a shit and a shave, and toddled off to the annual player of the year awards, where some prizes were handed out.

Stefan Johansen won Player of the Year, topping a supporters poll.  He shared the Players’ Player of the Year award with captain Scott Brown. Jason Denayer lifted the prize for Young Player of the Year. It wasn’t his, but he’s been living in Manchester, so it’s  sort of a habit.

 Kris Commons got  Goal of the Year , with the historic first ever goal against Second  Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

That joke only works if he did get the first one. Games against the little teams tend to be forgotten quickly .

And Leigh Griffiths was confirmed as Top Scorer.

Which won’t help his character reference when it comes to his court appearance.

Financial Director, Eric Riley, received a Special Recognition award.

Not from me. I wouldn’t have a clue what he looks like.

Someone who should have got a “Special Mention ” is a fellow who seems to pop up at every Celtic game, a fair old number of development games, and any number of other places where Celtic happen to be.

Paul the Tim.

 It takes a hell of a lot of effort, and money to follow Celtic, and the lad is clearly having the time of his life. Whether its like last night at the dance, or a wet and freezing night at a ground miles from home.

 Doesn’t seem to bother him.

So all of those on social media giving him grief, theres a special mention for you too.

Theres trouble brewing at the SFA, and possibly another controversial episode unfolding for Stewart Regan, the clueless commander in chief down at Hampden.

 Dave King, the proven liar and convicted tax fraudster hoping to save Second Rangers from the fate that befell the original club, is about to be told whether he’s a fit and proper person to have a seat on the board.

 So, a man with a history of lying, cheating and dodging tax is to be judged as to whether or not he’s the man to run a club with a history of lying , cheating and dodging tax.

By the likes of Regan, Campbell Ogilivie and a selection of other non entities.

Wonder if they’ll use those lines in the confirmation speech ?

 Keith Jackson , in the Record, thinks a storm is coming, whatever the decision. If King is denied, the Ibrox hordes will be revolting, (lol ) and if he’s accepted, Jackson thinks the other half of  Glasgow will be up in arms.

 Surely its the rest of Scottish football that will be up in arms, and not just , as he implies, Celtic fans.

 Whilst Jackson never intended-surely-to divide the city, thats the possible effect of turning this into a purely Glasgow affair.

 Lets try to avoid that this time round.

 It’s an issue for the whole of Scotland, and not just Glasgow.

 It does look like King will get the nod, which should destroy any remaining credibility within the ruling body. Won’t do a great deal for the poor sod tasked with trying to raise money for the new club either.

 Remember, every time they get a wee bit of help, someone else, who has been paying the bills and not trying to fleece their own fans , is getting left out.

 Only when they accept who they are, and what they have done, and promise not to do it again should they be allowed to take a place at the top table.

And even then, purely on merit.

As some of you know, there is a referendum shortly to be held in Ireland regarding the legalisation of same sex marriage. ( I thought thats what marriage was, you always got the same sex ) .

 Personally, I can’t see why gay people don’t have the right to be as miserable as the rest of us, although it is obviously more tied in with legal rights and financial obligations in law.

 However, I can’t let this picture, from Paddy Power go unnoticed;

 Wrong in so many ways, but also a superb piece of  thought provoking advertising.

Are these yours?

PollyWolly on twitter found them at the game yesterday, in the “shed “

She’s been doodling all the day with them and now wants to give them back.

The Clyde Cup final, the last minute equalizer.. the drama, and then losing the replay.

Prompted a few memories.

Right, licence for colourful descriptions today, as we play

Has anyone ever pulled together the data around referee decision making for/against Celtic? To you and me it seems obvious – high profile decisions at critical points in the game, tend to go against us. Willi Golumb dishing out an incorrect 84th minute decision at 2-0 goes for us…just wondering if anyone has ever analysed each game by game and pick out the key decisions and assessed, say over this season or a longer time period?

Pulling this together in a simple form (like the Griffiths data above) would go along way to shutting up those who accuse Celtic fans of paranoia…In fact Celtics marketing dept should employ a summer intern to do this..

I’d love to see this if it were available..

Whether it was a pen or not is the debate on the billy boys club and the laptop loyal, however Rankin should have been red carded as it was a studs up challenge.
You are right the decision yesterday balances last weeks, however Celtic only get decisions when they have won.
Surely if we win on Friday, the league is over as The sheepish would have to score a barrow load of goals to solve the goal difference.

Huns are arrogant but are good at losing, fact is I think that it is a GOOD thing that they lose and often.

GMS was bursting into the penalty area when he was taken out – no attempt at playing the ball, just stopping him from getting into a scoring position – if he gets through it’s a clear goal scoring chance, so it should have been a red card. Even when the ref makes a mistake in our favour, we still get cheated

Anyone fed up with the Sevco must be in premier league narrative as told by anyone who wants their here today gone tomorrow name in the papers! Actually if I were a hearts supporter I would be very miffed that the team that is so far back I can’t see them are being lauded as the team to push Celtic! Surely Hearts, Hibs and Queen of The South based on their performances this season would be the teams more likely to push Celtic than Sevco! The world has changed and now we know there is no need for Sevco to blight the Premier. Please Sevco hurry up and liquidate again.

When Queen of the South pamp the hun feckers out in the first play off round, the campaign for league reconstruction will be ramped up considerably.

Armageddon mark 2 will be the cry from those in charge of our game. It will be up to fans of all clubs to rise up again and deny them.

Mon the fans.
