Celtic Diary Monday April 20: Thoughts On The Referee…

I could be diplomatic, I could even be gracious to Inverness, who are the innocent party here.

I could criticise Ronny Deila, and the players, for allowing the controversial refereeing-controversial, aye, okay, -to allow them to lose a little bit of concentration, but thats not why celtic got beat.

Celtic got beat because the referee decided that he wanted them to.

Steven Maclean denied a third penalty claim in the first half when Inverness defender Josh Meekings saved a goalbound header from Leigh Griffiths. He actually put his arm up to block it.

Lets consider the Inverness view;

Griffiths shot saved on the line by Meekings. Good lad.

I saw it. you saw it, but did the man in the middle ?

Lets look at the referees angle;

Embedded image permalink

Alright, both the referee and the “assistant “

And lets go back to Tuesdays diary for MacLeans views on handball…

Maclean explains the handball rule.

We should have known then.

You don’t need to bribe or encourage a referee to get the result you want. Simply pick one who won’t need any encouragement.

Maclean doesn’t need any encouragement.

He has refereed four celtic games this season. We’ve lost three of them. Including yesterday.

We’ve only lost five all season.

Now, had the SFA thought about this, they would not have chosen him for this one. Just to avoid a possible controversy later.

Obviously they decided that it wasn’t worth it, and so he got the nod.

Or the handshake.

Stewart Regan later said that they must have missed the incident.

No, they didn’t.

Assistant Alan Muir is clearly seen saying something into his mic afterwards, but MacLean ignored it, or acted on it, depending on what was said.

Whatever was said, however, matters little. Muir saw the incident.

And so did MacLean.

Had the penalty been awarded, then Celtic would have been playing ten men, and been at least one up going into the break.

The way the game is played in the second half changes.

Theres no glossing over it. MacLean is either an inept official, or he is a cheat.

I’ve made my mind up.

Apart from all that, it was an engrossing game, especially when Craig Gordon had a rush of blood to the head and got himself sent off.

The life;ine provided by MacLean was eagerly grasped by the highlanders, and credit to them for getting on with it.

Ronny Deila made the mistake of removing James Forrest to allow for the introduction of Lukasz Zaluska, when arguably it would have been better to continue without a keeper.

Forrest had been Celtics most lively and inventive forward, refusing to be intimidated by a physical Inverness side. Others who had been fouled let it get to them, especially Virgil van dijk, who was outstanding at times, but got too involved in the niggly side of the game.

When Forrest went off, Inverness began to gain more and more possession of the ball, and the hoops struggled to get it back.

When aleksandr tonev ( absolutely no capital letters ) was introduced to the fray, there was a feeling that Deila was out of ideas, and true to expectations, Tonev was bloody hopeless.

Leigh Griffiths got little or no service, and the decision to play Commons and Johansen together looked to have backfired, but not as much as the decision to allow Liam Henderson out on loan.

What he offers to the team was exactly what was missing yesterday.

Commons was out of sorts, Johansen was forced to do all the running, and nothing seemed to go right.

Celtic should have been able to handle it better, and cope with anything Inverness had.

They didn’t, and thats that.

However, make no mistake. MacLeans decision was the match changer.

This all might seem a little bitter, but I’m calling it as i saw it.

Its a shame that the media won’t. and the SFA will ignore it. Their official match twitter didn’t even mention the handball  at the time.

So, what now ?

Does the club ignore it ?

We should at least be calling for an enquiry. Or an explanantion from MacLean.

Fans of other clubs will nod knowingly and say that these things even up over the course of a season, and that Celtic get more than their fair share of dodgy decisions.

Perhaps we do, but for them to even up over a season it would have to be extended by about ten years, and thats just for MacLean.

The question is, or at least the one that should be asked, are referees biased or simply incompetent ?

Or is the bias hiding in plain sight under the cover of incompetence ?

I think its the case that most Scottish referees are incompetent, and the rest are biased and incompetent.

Well, not the rest.

Just MacLean , really, who no doubt tomorrow will be in the papers complaining that his life is in danger and he’s received threats. to deflect attention away from the real issue.

I don’t feel any malice toward MacLean, far from it. Pity, maybe. but  not malice.

Theres still a league to be won, I suppose, and a lot to look forward to.

No doubt i’ll be back to my cheery self tomorrow, and I’m going to round off my morning and lighten my mood by watching the new Seth MacFarlane film, which is called ” A Million Ways To Cheat In The West Of Scotland. “

Or something like that.

Couple of questions:

Was the guy who got their penalty offside?

With players slipping from the start, why was the pitch watered at half time.

Bigoted wee shitehole is Scotland.

Incompetence is cheating, as it’s a given you cannot do your job to the standard required then fairness cannot be achieved via correct decision making. Ergo, they are all cheats. Reckon we should play our reserves in this cup as long as the SFA cannot provide credible officiating for their “showpiece”. If they treat as second rate, so should Celtic.

I’ve seen bad decisions in all my years playing and watching football. There is only one word to describe yesterday though and it is cheat. Down to ten and possibly two goals as well there is no way Inverness are coming back from that and the officials knew it. We saw the dishonest way the officials behaved when we played hearts in the semi and now it happens again. There will be nothing done about it though, it’s a disgrace.

Simply defies belief. Clear unobstructed views, clear reaction from both ICT and our players and play is waved on. Two officials making such a combined hash of it must be rare. The incompetence shown by the referee and his assistant is indefensible. I suspect a dishonest mistake rather than an honest one. Interesting that this referees has officiated over most of our defeats as well worthy of further scrutiny. I was gutted yesterday and angry as I felt we were very hard done by. That said lets win the league and get into the champions league again. League cup and Scottish cup are bonus trophies. Like to win them yet champions league should be our focus every year.

Agreed, the officials changed the game.We must also look at ourselves, take Izzie, he can have inconsistant performances through out the season, which he does, knowing he will never get dropped, WHY , because we dont have a replacement left back, which is RD and Lawwells fault. We should have replacements at every position. No one NO one should have the right to play week in week out. Get the cheque book out.

17 out of 19 away draws in Scottish Cup. Drawn against the 1 remaining SPL club in a semi officiated by a ref who’d already “successfully” officiated over 3 Celtic defeats this season (out of 5 in total) Of 28,643 the only 2 who didn’t see a stonewall penalty were Mclean & Muir. – Go figure!

Honest mistakes and we being the only team slipping all over the place aside. Yet again, Caley seem to have our measure. We struggle against them all the time? Totally gutted with the non pen but more concerned that we’ve not come up with a game plan yet against “inferior” opposition.

yes the referee cheated celtic out of the treble but the manager is just as guilty… kris commons did not kick a ball all game apart from 1 decent effort on goal.. when james was taken off (despite being celtic’s best player) he asked the coaching staff why he was subbed to which john kennedy replied “beacuse you cant fucking defend” now correct me if im wrong but what does kris commons offer in the art of defending? as soon as jf was subbed we had nothing to offer going forward… the changes made by the manager has shades of the start of the season… totally clueless… tonev?? why is he even getting a place on the bench? all he has done for celtic is a charge for racism… also, why not throw on mcgregor for a bit of somethibng different? or even better still why was wakaso not on the bench? he is according to the players the best player at the club… and has also told the coaching team if he travels with the squad one more time and is not selected then there will be trouble… i too would be raging if tonev was selected infront of me… and as per my first point yes we where cheated but the manager is just as guilty with some of his moves yesterday

spot on Desi. The refereeing decision on the penalty was clearly a turning point (and yes, I agree with the consensus of cheatery), but Celtic gave the equaliser to Inverness on a plate. Not smart enough, Celtic.

Ronnie shouldve raised the question on McLeans stats prior to the game – mindgames i think the Engerlish press like to call it – and prepared the team to assume they were playing against 12 (or 16). Not smart enough, Celtic.

How many years have we been watching Scottish football – anyone at all surprised by this. However, Deila – horrendous decision bringing Forrest off if an incompetant biased referee (& assistant) misses a handball in a split second in a game where he cant stand one of the teams that should be considered par for the course for us nowadays – Deila not reading the Forrest could take the ball for runs (he was skinning that defence time and time again) that would take pressure off our players and allow our lines to be cleared – that was amateurish to say the lease. WHY WERE OUR PLAYERS FALLING ??? John Clarke needs to answer that one. NEver saw a Cally player fall once.

Griffiths – joke
Commons – joke
Zaluska – utter joke
Tonev – really ?? In a Celtic jersey…that ? No way – came on before Guidetti ?? Is it back to this weirdness ?? I so hope not.

There was no way that the SFA would allow Celtic to have a shot at the treble, so they had to be taken out at the semi-final stage. McLean was appointed as the referee, knowing well from his past history that he would do a hatchet job on Celtic. McLean and Muir must be two Huns who hate the green and white. McLean looks like a fairy floating around the field, he is probably a gay boy.

As afar as things “evening out” I am trying to think if things ever “evened out” when we played the Huns over several decades. Did any Hun team get red cards or not get penalties or offsides when a cup was at stake? There is a whole history of shenanigans against The Celtic in big games, especially Cups. I don’t buy the “honest mistake” nonsense. There were several other bad calls against us yesterday as well. Let’s win the league and also plan some revenge!

Let’s be accurate.

Three Rangers’ players were ordered off in the St Patrick’s Day Massacre, another three were ordered off when Lennon and McCoist had their conversation, Robertson got sent off after 8 minutes in a semi-final at Hampden, Naismith got booked and sent off for simulation at Ibrox in the 2-2 draw…

A disgraceful performance by the referee, and the assistant behind the goal (who had actually intruded on to the pitch to see the incident … but what about the assistant on the right touchline. Three blind mice! Who sponsors these officials?

Another thing, why did we have to play Kilmarnock in midweek yet Inverness who had a game in hand to play v Dundee Utd had a free midweek, yet this game will be played 5th of May???????

Glasgow Southside

Why does the Celtic Board sit still for the disgraceful treatment of our club?
Celtic play midweek Inverness get a rest .
Celtic have lost five times in domestic competitions this season 3 of those games refereed by the man who officiated yesterday.
There were three clear handballs by Inverness players yesterday and all went unpunished.
The Celtic captain was booked within twenty minutes of the start, maybe correctly , but several Inverness players got away with far worse.
Celtic players were repeatedly called back when the advantage rule should have been played.
Inverness to their credit have said penalty. Several ex professions including guys from the English leagues have expressed incredulity.
Even the Scottish press and the BBC have almost unanimously said the lack of decision was unbelievable.
As for the Craig Gordon incident I am far from convinced that the situation was not due to the slippy pitch and two players clattering into one another. Surely in the interests of fairness a yellow might have been a better decision.
At any rate it’s time our Board started to make their voice and their muscle felt, for a start they should demand a public explanation of the officials and of the Scottish football authorities.
Is it any wonder that the game in this country is fast becoming a laughing stock

I don’t think Ronny called much wrong yesterday except perhaps the taking off of Forrest.
But he’s been doing that for weeks and no one has complained so perhaps there is a medical or conditioning reason for this we are not aware of yet.
I thought Griffiths was poor for most of it apart from his instincts on that incident-Defo a penalty, defo a sending off and defo game over at that point in the proceedings ICT would have been passed off the park.
On the passing I thought our pass selections were rank most of the game Johansen probably being the worst truth be told.
He had a poor game though worked tirelessly throughout.
Commons was poor.
Brown mediocre and Bitton hot and cold.
Forrest looked the busiest and did cause them issue with his pace but again he has no end product alot of the time.
Effectively the entire attack had an off day I thought.
ICT were compact and worked as a unit, they looked dangerous on the break more dangerous than us young Christie was by far the best player on the pitch I thought and made us look very average at times as he skipped by us.
All that aside we get to the officiating:
The trip on Forrest in the box..Seen them given aso seen them booked for diving REF DID NEITHER = SHITE REFEREEING
The pull on Commons when he got free from his marker in the box..DEFO A PENATLY he’s through on goal without the tug REFEREE WAVES PLAY ON= SHITE OFFICIATING from both the linesman and referee.
The decision on the Griffiths effort is what it is SHITE OFFICIATING FORM THEM ALL
The 3 occasions during the game where the ref pulled us back to take free kicks even though we had the ball and looked like breaking was absolutely shite officiating again it was almost as if he wanted play to break down and our momentum and urgency to get on with it slowed down.
On the Tonev sub I get why he put him on he has pace ,capable of shooting from range and is prepared to track back.
Like him or not the guy does have ability though just like most others does need game time.
We lost it hurts and we move on.
Same old shite in Scotland we should be used to it by now.
As a very wise man once said:
“If you’re good enough, the referee doesn’t matter.”

We simply weren’t on the day.

Forrest played well, but one touch from Commons can win any game

elcormaco

Regardless of what the SFA & officials may or may not have done, we should have had enough to win the game yesterday and to blame the officials is to miss our own culpability.

We never looked settled in defence all day, many misplaced passes or general sloppiness, we got caught from our own corners far too easily on the counter, and our set piece delivery was poor.

Caley were clearly determined to press high up the pitch and be aggressive, and credit to them they did it well, but we never reacted or tried to mix up our play. This has been an issue all season – we have one way of playing, and if a team counter that well we lack any alternative, it’s just more of the same.

As others have said Forrest was a better option when down to 10 as his running could stretch them, Commons had a very poor game and would have been a better candidate for the hook, and Tonev, deary me, that shot he had when team mates were inside waiting for the ball to be squared? I think its still rising.

Fundamentally Caley just seemed to want it more, they were in our faces, played at a quicker tempo and we never looked able to cope that well with it. Not enough leaders, too many content to let the game continue as it had been and expect Broonie to stand up to their aggressive, but fair, style.

Now of course we should have had a penalty, and a red card, and the outcome of the game would then likely have been different. There is no justification that will stand up to scrutiny as to how the assembled officials didn’t give it, I cant believe they didn’t see it or believed it was accidental, so yes perhaps they were not inclined to treat Celtic entirely fairly, but we were 1-0 and looking okay when they broke from our corner and Matthews and Gordon between them managed to make a roaring arse of it. That is our poor organisation, and all their goals had some element of us making a defensive mess of things.

If blame is to go around today I’m putting as much as the door of the manager as the referee.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  bgbhoy

We were average with 11 men same as we were last week.
There’s been a definite dip in form for several of our key men and it showed again at Hampden.
I think Forrest is overrated by a great many of our fans yes he has pace ,yes he can get by players but the simple fact of the matter is he fails to capitalise on getting by them more often than not.
He could well have an issue with his muscles hence the Manager being careful with him he stated months ago they don’t want to rush his return to full fitness and I think he had one mind on that.
The sending off caused us an issue thought it is my belief had we been on our A Game he could have had easily went with 2 at the back and pushed the FB’s up into Midfield with either Brown or Bitton holding to form a makeshift 3rd defender when on the back foot.
Problem we had Griffiths never looked like scoring and both Johansen and Commons were below par too.
But both of them are capable of making a goal from nothing.
Forrest isn’t and doesn’t.
The team was average the sending off fucked it I’d rather Gordon just let him score than risk contact personally same with last ditch defending it’s better to concede a goal and crack on with 11 than concede a penalty and play the remainder with 10.
Poor choices made at critical moments Gordon and Matthews ran the risk and paid the price.

I agree we still could/should have won the match despite everything. We do sometimes need some kind of Plan B when things don’t go our way.
Dundee Wednesday night. Another tough gig.
Gordon
Matthews/Van Dijk/Denayer/Izzy
Brown/Armstrong
Mackay-Steven/Johansen/Griffiths
Guidetti
We need all three points but I can see us making heavy weather of it. We need some combination of forward line that moves off the ball and drags defenders about.
We might need to rest Johansen as well.
What we do need is all three points so we can win the league as early as possible.

Scottish football is fast becoming a very sad state of affairs. Not only is it corrupt, but it is now so blatant that the time has come to rid the the game of all within the corridors of power. What you do to change the game is down to the fans of all the clubs and if it means a prolonged boycott across the entire fixture list then so be it.
Better Celtic managers and Celtic teams have never won the treble, so to me, it wasn’t the be all and end all. Champions league qualification is.
Ronny blundered when he removed James Forrest from the game, but they now need to get angry, dust themselves down and demolish Dundee on Wednesday and get the league sewn up.

Why at every corner the opposition take against us we have everyone in the box, when we take one most off the opposition have 1-2 players up field so we have to have 2-3 players marking them, how many goals have we lost when ball gets put out just to come back in.
Caley had players upfield yesterday so we had players marking them but we still attempted to flight the ball in on top off goalie, if you remember inter had 3 players upfield when we played them.
It’s happened for the last 4 seasons and we have had no out when ball gets put ouoff defence.
Johansen has not kicked a ball since he came back from suspension and did Forrest not limp off when getting subbed and after Wednesday when we had 2 center forwards on park interchanging why did we not start that way because most teams have sussed plan A and we have no plan B.

I agree with the posters who are asking for action to be taken against these corrupt cunts and also questioning what our club is doing about it.
It matters not a fucking jot that some of our players didn’t play well, the cold facts are Celtic were denied a clear penalty, Inverness being reduced to ten men and Celtic potentially taking a 2-0 lead going into the second half v 10 men.
The officials fucking seen it, they know Celtic would walk the rest of the game so they couldn’t have that.
What has fucking Lawwell said today?
Are we missing Rangers Peter?

It’s time our club spoke up, if they aren’t prepared to represent the fans concerns they should fuck off and let me fucking do it!

I’ve been a Celtic disciple for more than 65 years and at one time I was a qualified referee. Over the years I have seen us suffer at the hands of officials like Jack Mowatt and “Tiny” Wharton, but at least they tried to be more surreptitious. I don’t think I have ever seen such a blatant and damaging misapplication (deliberate)of the laws of the game, as I witnessed yesterday. Apart from the more serious transgressions, niggling decisions such as blowing for fouls after advantage had been played and Celtic were making promising advances. How the rampaging Caley forward was only booked in the final minutes defies belief. He kicked our players more times than he kicked the ball! Obviously he was from the old “Never mind the baw, get oan wi’ the game” school. I’m sure John Hughes told his players to be as physical as possible within the laws, but even he must have been embarrassed by some of his assaults.
I suppose we will have to accept that the establishment of referees are still favouring the age old directive of giving every advantage to all opponents of Celtic. I know they are sponsored by Specsavers, but maybe they should also carry the logo of Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Cartvale88

Kris, I note your comments about bias, remember the greatest Celtic manager always reminded the players prior to a game that they were playing against twelve men not eleven.
There is a bias against The Irish in the West Coast, why no monument to the thousands that died in the famine.
Look at other cities with a large Irish diaspora, they have monuments to a tragedy that equals others like the Armenians or Yugoslavia.
Sorry I am not from an Irish background, but I am a Celtic supporter since the late fifties.

For years I have noted a distinct ‘jealously’ towards the Celtic, becoming stronger in the latter part of the twentieth century.
In any other profession, if refereeing was a profession there would be repercussions, never mind we did not go burst.

the ref was an absolute joke yesterday as were his assistants.
Everybody, including the ref and his assistants know it was a Celtic penalty, so no point in going back over it.
ICT’s penalty, was a penalty, however, the forward got his shot awsay, which went passed the post. Craig Gordon collided with him after he had hit the ball, so a penalty for the foul, but he never denied the forward a clear goal scoring chance, so should only have been a yellow card. Why Izzy never body checked the forward at the penalty is beyond me – instead he attempts a sliding tackle that was never going to get the ball – he should have taken a yellow for the team
The ICT no 15, fouled his way through the match and was spoken to on several occasions, but no booking until extra time – he should have had a red card during the 90 minutes.
I had a funny felling it would all go tits up yesterday – I had an argument with my son prior to the game against sevco – he couldn’t understand my reluctance to go as he couldn’t see any way sevco would win – my fear was a performance by the officials like we witnessed yesterday.
Been watching Celtic for 50 odd years, nothing the officials do surprises me anymore

It doesn’t make it alright but we should be used to these decisions by refs. The standard of refs have maybe been better this season, we used to have to win most games despite the refs, now it only happens a few games a season.

If Johansen could finish from eight yards this whole situation wouldn’t have happened. We didn’t play well enough and paid the price, too many passengers and not enough quality.

Don’t agree that Inverness are the innocent party, if deliberate handball a couple of yards from the line which prevents a certain goal isn’t cheating then what is?

If Boerrigter broke a rule which is “causing a match official to make an incorrect decision by committing an act of simulation” then Meekings simulated heading a ball, ahem, causing a match official to make an incorrect decision.

They’re good at interpreting rules when it suits them, any bets on this one?
