Celtic Diary Monday March 2: More Than A Team ?

Celtic beat Aberdeen 4-0 yesterday, and another win against St. Johnstone this week will put the Hoops nine points clear. Which is a remarkable achievement considering the amount of swearing from the fans during the first ten minutes or so of yesterdays game.

Aberdeen flattered Celtic by setting up the same way as Deilas men do, and didn’t allow the home side to settle. The back four and midfield were constantly harassed in possession, and the dons were unlucky not to be in front when Niall McGin had a shot tipped over and Andrew Considine headed a little too high.

There were other chances , and suddenly it seemed that the threat from the north was very real, and Aberdeen do deserve considerable praise for coming to Glasgow and taking the game to Celtic, where others have merely set up with two lines of four and hoped for the breakaway.

However, before these teams take a leaf out of Aberdeens book, it didn’t work for them, and it won’t work for you.

As the Ronny doubters will tell you, your players need to be extremely fit to play this way, and the Dons weren’t. So, they ran out of steam just after the hour mark, roughly about the time earlier in the season when a few of our players were blowing out their arses, and Celtic took full advantage, adding to Jason Denaayers first half header with three more goals, and it could have been more.

Celtics opener just before half time was their first effort on goal ( bar the Griffiths shot which led to the corner ) from their first corner, Leigh Griffiths standing firm in front of Dons keeper Scott Brown , who didn’t think to just sidestep him, and thus couldn’t get near the ball. Virgil van Dijk had been fouled shortly before, but no penalty was neccessary, and referee John Beaton thought he could still show his face in the lodge, but when Stefan Johansen was fouled in the box on the hour mark, he had no option but to point to the spot, and resign himself to staying home Sunday night.

Tv “experts ” said that Aberdeen lost their shape and discipline after that, but thats unfair. They were simply knackered, and tired bodies lead to tired minds which make tired decisions. It was a combination of that tiredness and Celtics resurgence in the second half that did it, and the team spirit which is now becoming a hallmark of the Deila reign.

As the manager put it;

“In the second half we were disciplined, organised, balanced, moved the ball quicker and they couldn’t cope with the runs we had behind them,” said the Norwegian.

“I am so happy for the performance and the result and I am proud of the boys.

“It is so hard to play so many games like we are doing now.

“We didn’t arrive in Glasgow until 3am on Friday morning, that is a tough one when you are going to play two days later,” added Deila, who is confident that Kris Commons’ hamstring injury, which saw him substituted after only 11 minutes on Sunday, and Stuart Armstrong’s buttock injury, which forced his replacement off in the second half, is not too serious

Players look out for each other, and help their teammates. Its that simple.

Efe Ambrose did well in an unfamiliar left back role, with Emilio Izaguerre having broken a finger, and it seemed the whole defence cranked itself up a notch to help him. Nir Bitton is becoming more and more like Paul Lambert with every game, and his passing and movement , combined with the passing and movement of Stefan Johansen is Celtics major creative force, although Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay Steven have added an extra string to that.

Disagree ? Watch again some of the interchanges and movement of these two. They are the partnership, not Brown and Bitton. If i have a complaint about yesterdays game, well, more an observation, it that John Guidetti isn’t up to the job.

He’s reached that stage of “Aw naw, don’t gie it tae him ” , and when that happens to a striker at Celtic, the only way is out.

Aberdeen will  get fitter, and they will pose a serious challenge next year, but it does appear that this seasons race may be over. If we do win the league, it will be worth remembering that it will be the wins over Aberdeen that have put us out front, and not the usual collapse of a rival against smaller teams.

Any treble this year will be down to what Celtic have done themselves, and from the start we had last summer, the whole club will deserve it. But theres still a long way to go before that treble is won.

It seems  that Ronny knows that.

“I don’t take anything for granted, I have been in football for many years.

“At my former club we were three times leading in the summer by seven points and it took three years to win the league.

“So I know how quick it can turn around if you start to lose focus on the right things.

“If we do everything we have done so far the rest of the season it is going to be very hard for them.

“We have the possibility to get nine (points ahead) and there is goal difference as well, that is getting better.

“So we really have a good position in the league.”

The picture at the top of the page shows captain and manager in a triumphant embrace , and I couldn’t help but remember this one, from the Black and White Cup some years ago.

It sticks in my mind because both men avoid the drink, and I can imagine the photographer saying “Gauny wan o’yeez at least haud a bottle o’champagen ? ”

Brown and Deila obviously have working relationship which is crucial to the club. Their seems to be mutual respect and thats going to be important over the next few years. Brown obviously has the confidence of the manager, and will be asked to help get his ideas across, which may also explain the improvement in one or two of the more senior players.

“Tell Kris his arse needs to be no more than this big ”

There were a few other telling pictures to emerge from yesterdays game. Craig Gordon, for instance, actually got his shirt dirty, something that hasn’t happened in the league for a while. Apaprently his bonus structure is set up around his saves, and not the teams results, which means he’s quids in this week.

But it wasn’t all sweetness and light. Gary Mackay Steven has stopped smiling.

Don’t worry, Gary. You don’t have to pass to Guidetti if you don’t want to. In fact, none of you do.

But none match the emotion on this face at the end of the game;

Speaking of emotion, Jay Beattie, surprisingly left out of this weeks squad, collected his goal of the month award at Celtic Park yesterday.

Like I said, more than a team, more than a club. Anyone who isn’t smiling looking at those two pictures is on the wrong website.

According to the press, the two players most wanted by other clubs are Virgil van Dijk and John Guidetti. One isn’t as good as he thinks he is, and the other is better than he thinks he is.

Its not just about working on passing and movement with the players, sometimes you have to work on their heads as well.

If Guidetti thought he was as good as van Dijk thinks he is, then we’d have a hell of a striker on our books. At the moment, though, he seems terrified to do anything in case he makes an arse of it, and inevitably thats exactly what happens.

If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to ?

This doesn’t apply to van Dijk, however, he just needs to remember that he is fallible, and act accordingly.

Elsewhere, David Somers became the latest man to leave the stricken Rangers International football club. He’s the chairman, or was, and that leaves the way clear-according to the now delirious Scottish media -for Dave King , Paul Murray and the rest of the crew that oversaw the death of the original club to “seize conbrol ” .

Company Law ?

Presumably that doesn’t apply to the “peepil ” . Either that or they don’t understand it.

In the same way they didn’t understand several other laws, such as tax law, equal opportunities law and Nicky Law.

You can’t help thinking that the exodus of those who have recently left has been carefully planned. After all, it gives each and every one of them a chance to say that any issues that come to light post Admin will ” not have happened while they were there ”

In fact, we hear that the past members of the board and management will be raising a few quid by recording their version of this record;

whats going on here  ?

Looks like an own goal from where I am sat as if I’m not mistaken the Girvan Shitehouse is on the deck.

Totally agree with the assessment of Aberdeen runnning out of steam. I was sat watching the game with my two year old and even he could see the Aberdeen players were never going to be able to keep that pace up. They were impressive but fitness and class shone through in the end. They should have punished our slow start but in saying that I was impressed with the defensive duties for the main.

Guidetti was the only player left of the field at full time not to acknowledge the fans, he seemed to take the huff and went up the tunnel as soon as the whistle sounded.

Agree about Guidetti who was appaling when he came on, but not so much Biton or Johansen; I’m a big Nir fan but in the first half (like most players) he was very much below par, very lazy in the tackle and in making clearances but certainly in the second half he was much improved which was perhaps the catalyst for us to perform much better.
On Johansen his passing is very erratic, he clipped in one or two decent ballas but he gives it away carelessly too much and a wee tweak is required there to enhance an all round impressive player.
Pleased for Efe though perhaps his perfomance would have come under more scrutiny had Hayes remained on the park; thought McGinn gave Matthews a good game as well but Rooney did nothing against the middle pair.
The treble will be won/lost over the next two games; Tannadice is the key obviously (last domestic defeat) as Ciftci is out the final the week after. But if we’re lifting silverware on the 15th without losing this weekend then nobody is left in the competition who can beat us at Hampden. Would take a draw at Tannadice and get them back to ours now that no European games can impact our schedule.

How cheeky of us would it be, to nab Cifti as well? We could do a heck of lot worse; but I fully admit, that getting new defenders in should the priority for next season.

One half of the deceased’s esteemed centre back pairing of Gray & Dunn, sticking through his own net to put us 3-2 up en route to ten men winning the league in 79. One of the greatest nights, even if there was a telly blackout.

At half-time I was predicting that if Aberdeen tried to play the same way in the 2nd half and push forward for an equalizer, we’d murder them on the break – Which is basically what happened. I’m not sure quite how much of Aberdeen’s “collapse” was down to our superior fitness. – After Griffith’s penalty there was a visible extra spring in our step, which was just as much mental as physical, and with that Aberdeen’s belief in getting a result faded to dust, like their league championship hopes.

– So, all those Billy Goats in Sheep clothing in the SMSM who were slobbering at the mouth and praying to the devil that the sheep would take advantage of our “post-Milan tiredness” really have only themselves to blame for talking up Aberdeen too much into genuine title contenders. – They underestimated the cumulative effect of playing at a high tempo against a team with fighting spirit, genuine pace and quality throughout the side.

BTW Am I imagining it, but does Big Jock have angel wings in that B & W photo above?

Thought Aberdeen had a very decent half hour and might have scored, Craig Gordon is immense for us.I thought we looked unsettled we commons went off so early, it required a slight change in plan but the guys took a while to settle, maybe bit of half time guidance maybe?

Izzy needs rest regardless of his broken finger,he has been playing not stop almost for 18 months plus the flights. World Cup etc. Good that Effe had a good game, we need an alternative and he is a better crosser of the ball.

Nir Bitton is the most improved player on the park, a lot was talked about him last season and i couldn’t see it, ponderous deliberate for a team that presses and moves the ball at pace, didn’t seem to make sense but the analogy with Lambert is good and he is starting to use his physique a bit at last.

Guidetti has lost confidence .remember the striker of October, he has been diverted by the rattle of coins and with a few exceptions Kenny,Wanyama,Forster how many go on to a better career after Celtic, yeah more money but little else?

Ronny Deila is getting it right at Celtic, the team is playing really well and I salute him for this.
I was a massive critic of Ronny at the start but now the season has settled down I see the progress with the team, I like what I see just now.
The manager has turned this team around, work to be done yet, we aren’t the finished article but we are certainly in a great position.

Special thanks to the players for Sunday’s result v Aberdeen, to beat them 4-0 on Sunday coming back from the Milan game on Thursday is outstanding.

Guidetti! Stay or go? I wouldn’t be upset if he left.

I’ve gained two stone in two months—eating HUMBLE PIE! I was in the anti-Ronny brigade, having nightmares along the lines of Macari, Barnes, Brady, Venlos and worst of all, Mowbray. I couldn’t see the 4-2-3-1 working for us. I’m a pensioner but learning all the time, how to keep the faith. I have to go back to Martin O’Neill’s time to remember Celtic dominating the opposition, and playing the same way away in Europe as we play at home. Oh me of little faith. That was some football yesterday in the second half. Off for some more pie…

To put on that second half after the exertions of playing with ten on Thursday night is a great testiment to the character, desire and fitness of this group. A lot needs to go right betwenn now and teh end of the season to win a treble, but I wouldnt bet against it at this point.
And with 2nd Rangers seeming to get what they want – a glib and shameless liar who did nothing to stop Craig Whyte killing them once whilst on the board and who patently expects that the fans will bank roll his plan and the SFA will keep shtum on any shameless history he may have means its a great times to be a tim. The “King revolution” can only end badly imho when they realsie he isnt going to be making up the shortfall in their finances, but fully expects the fans to.

The only reason the sheep were ever close to us were our awful team selections and poor tactics,we started poorly on sunday the sheep were not that good and only ran about for 30 mins or so, if we get in a proper manager next season and a few better players especially a play maker we should go back to a 30 odd point winning margin, the sheep are very average, but went on a run against teams who hardly turned up, just remember Strachan stopped watching other scottish side because they were totally different against us , bet the sheep get pumped in euro league qualifier by some lithuanian outfit

Remarkable performance considering the time the team got back.Blew the the sheep away with 3 goals in 17 mins. The wee rat McCann said there wasn’t 4 goals in it.He’s right,it should have been a Ralph 7.
Gordon only had ONE save to make.My good mucker Charlie, will like this stat,Since Christmas we have only lost ONE goal in 11 domestic games.
Good going.Zig and Zag have been excellent.I would send both players to the sun for a week, after Wednesday’s game.A well earned rest,as both can’t play until 21’s March.

Meant to add,
I can’t agree with your assertion Ralph, that the sheep will be serious title challengers next season.Moreso,if they are in Europa groups, and have to put a shift in on Thursday’s.If they are not.like this season.hopefully we are playing in CL groups, and we will concentrate on league after Christmas.
I know you would have game their vile support more tickets,Ralph. But,I am glad we didn’t.Chants like your in the wrong country, and Jimmy Saville,he’s one of your own got NO coverage from SMSM.

Happy Days!

Yes we could have been better in the first half, but we tore them a new one in the second. I am only slightly disappointed we didn’t get five against them; four did very nicely though.

Glad to see McInnes with a burst coupon. Aye, you’ve got a lot to learn Mr. Hun In-sheeps-clothing.

We have the look of champions when we get going.
It also helps when the referee isn’t in the other teams pocket – as we witnessed the other night.

I know the whole teams fitness is coming along, but whatever Johansen has got in his batteries – we needs to bottle that up;
and spread it around. Amazing workrate.

With continuing shenanigans and dropped points at the lower-tier-tribute-act, it just gets better and better.

Now where has GMS’s smile gone?

The team and Delilah blew the sheepiies away, considering the effort in Milan and the travel.
Things can only get better if we get a left back and a strong forward, Cifti would fit in well as stated previously, a powerfull boy.

WE have had 3 tight contests with Aberdeen this Season they dominated most of the first half in my mind but like the other 2 games were found short of getting a result.
Good to see Holy getting in a with a few stats there.. 😉
They dont’ alwyas tell the full picture but they do give a good indication of how your team is progressing.

The fact we have only conceded 13 goals on the Domestic front all season speaks volumes I think for our Managers approach.

We are a harder team to beat this Season that’s a fact.

We are winning but now we are winning with a bit of swagger and style.
Bodes well for the run in.
