Celtic Diary Saturday February 28: Flares ? Time For The Cracked Crest.

Theres been a couple of repercussions for Celtic from the Inter game the other night. UEFA. much to the delight of certain sections of the media, who tend to harp on about this sort of thing more than they do, say about racism, financial doping, cheating, fraud and on the pitch violence.

Roddy ” silent P ” Forsyth wrote in the Telegraph;

 Celtic face the prospect of a heavy Uefa fine – and perhaps even partial stadium closure – after fans threw flares at their Europa League tie against Inter Milan in the San Siro on Thursday.

Fans threw flares ? Really ? I was of the impression one fan lit one flare ( still one too many ) and it got caught by the eagle eyed hacks who are the guardians of the game when it comes to bad behaviour.

The club are now on a sixth Uefa disciplinary charge in three years and the governing body of European football is likely to regard the latest incident all the more seriously because it occurred 34 hours after a £10,000 fine was imposed for a similar occurrence when Celtic met Dynamo Zagreb in Croatia in December.

He does have a point, however, supporters know that the club will be hammered for using pyrotechnics, so its beyond me why anyone should feel the need to do it.

Frankly, theres no excuse.

I’m a little less comfortable with the social media driven witch-hunt to find the guy who did it. his picture has been sent around the world, with demands for him to pay any fine. That would be justice, but a little harsh.

Maybe just a confession, public apology and a wee bit of charity work would be better.

Another charge sheet will be dropping through the letter box as Celtic have been charged with Improper Conduct, a catch all offence when a team collects five bookings during a match. The club are contesting the charge.

A spokesman said;

“UEFA rules state that they are able to open disciplinary proceedings against any club that receives five or more bookings.

“Celtic can confirm that this is a charge the club will be contesting.”

 It is not known whether referees are awarded a bonus for reaching the five booking target, however there are suspicions that any cash payments are usually made the night before, in the hotel room, delivered by aspiring actresses and models who are only doing this while they study law.

Again , the Scottish media have picked up on this. A little too gleefully.

What they didn’t pick up on, and its certainly relevant, was this;

Inter Milan face sanctions for violating FFP regulations

Inter have long been under the microscope when it comes to being penalized under Financial Fair Play regulations, and it seems that the club may soon be fined due to their inability to meet the break-even parameters imposed by the FFP system. Thohir visited Milan yesterday where there were UEFA agents waiting to talk with him about the financial situation of the club.

Currently, Inter Milan have a €180 million deficit in their balance over the last 3 years, which is €135 million over the limit imposed by UEFA. In the following days the club’s management will have to travel to Nyon, Switzerland (UEFA HQ) to discuss the situation and negotiate with the organization in order to try to avoid the worst. At this point, there are three possible situations for Inter now: they may be imposed with a lock on future transfer markets, they may see their cash prizes earned by qualification to European competitions withheld, or face a €7 Million fine (which seems like the most likely outcome currently).

Erick Thohir, who was already aware months ago of this eventuality, instituted a new company called Inter Media and Communication, which is projected to increase the club’s earnings from €73 Million to €89 Million by 2020.

But Inter are not the only club facing disciplinary actions for failing to comply with FFP regulations. Other top European teams involved in these investigations are: Monaco, Besiktas, Krasnodar, Liverpool, Sporting Club de Portugal, and Roma

But then, the MSM have always struggled with the financial rules that surround the game.

As was pointed out by Huddleboard poster Bobby Murdoch in refreshingly simple terms;

 Kind of puts the occasional flare into perspective.

 Police Scotland said ahead of tomorrows Aberdeen game that they will take very seriously indeed anyone who enters the ground in possession of flares.

Tomorrows game !

Celtic face Aberdeen at Celtic Park, with a 12 noon kick off. The Lennon CSC were going to run a bus to this game, but that would have meant setting out around fourish, paying a full weekends hire on the vehicle, and turning the trip into a long, long day. With no recovery time before the working week starts again on Monday. Instead, a few will go in the car, which is quicker and more economical. Some will have to miss out though.

Bit rough if you paid for a season book, and can’t make it.

Fair enough, Sky have control of the kick off time here, but can’t we just ring them and say that because of safety issues we have to start at 3pm ?

You can put anything down to safety issues, sometimes even safety.

That contract needs to be cancelled, even if it means finding a clause somewhere that gets us out of it. Such as commentators failing to promote the product, or even bringing it into disrepute.

See, McCann , Neil, every time he opens his mouth. Or David Tanner, who, uniquely, can make a viewers eyes and ears vomit simultaneously.

Ronny Deila agrees about the kick off time, and had a pop at Sky;

 “It should get prime time. This game deserves more respect. I don’t think there will be 50,000 at Norwich. It’s a huge game at Celtic Park, the support is unbelievable. Noon is not good.”

Are we going to play at 10 o’clock soon?”

“We have to start thinking of the fans.At 3 o’clock more people come and it would be a bigger game.”

Again, this isn’t the clubs fault. Its Sky. All the club can do is try to make sure we get a better deal next time.

Remember, TV is supposed to benfit the game, not the other way round.

Theres been a bit of a war of words ahead of the game between Dons boss Derek MacInnes, who has been at it all week, we just didn’t notice because our minds were elsewhere.

Aberdeens players have been talking themselves up as well, which is fantastic as it helps to build up anticipation for the game.

They reckon they will win, and the league title is theirs of they want it , and so on, whilst Ronny Deila , turning his attention to the match, was unflappable;

“I don”t think it’s a cup final for us – I think it’s a cup final for Aberdeen. But we want to win and we know what’s in it if we win this game.

“It’s not over, but we would have put ourselves in a very very good situation. Then it’s going to be tough to reach us and take us back.”

Thats right. It won’t be over, but it will certainly put the sheep back in their pen.

 Celtic should be confident, Aberden have been beaten a couple of times this season, but despite that, they keep on hanging on, and full credit has to go to them. The hoops should be too strong for the men from the north, but they tend to win the other games, which keeps it interesting.

 And anyway, even if they do win, we’ll just buy their best players at the end of the season, and then they’ll get relegated.

So there.

 Scottish football is on the up, theres an enthusiasm for the game that needs to be put out front. we should be selling the game at every opportunity. It could well be a classsic tomorrow, aberdeen will be up fo it, they’ll be fresh. Celtic could be caught cold on the back of a disappointing European exit.

 For other teams to even talk about winning the league is a massive improvement on the way things were under the old two horse first past the post system.

 In fact, even the minnows can dream of glory;

Its Saturday, and that means its time for a caption competition! ( Since when ?-Ed )

This picture was taken last night at the Falkirk -Second Rangers game, and it appears that one or two of the supporters are less than happy, despite the plucky, cash strapped minnows earning a credible draw against the Bairns.

 What constructive criticism could be on offer here ?

A terrific article with great insight about the SMSM and EUFA’s farcical FFP ‘rules’ and also a smashing, no-nonsense insert from “Bobby Murdoch”.

I don’t think the photie of rabid huns needs a caption.

The picture says it all for me.

If he worked in the media, I am sure he would already be a “St. Johnstone supporter”.

Let us enjoy their continuing misery in the lower tier prior to their next asset stripping.

I must admit that my pride at the team’s performance immediately turned to despair when I read about the arseholes letting off flares in the ground yet again.
What are these clowns thinking of, assuming they have the capacity to think?
While it may be only the odd moron that is lighting flares, they must be part of a larger group who are encouraging and condoning this kind of action because, let’s face it, these cretins wouldn’t have the balls to act alone. If they were acting alone, one would hope that those in the vicinity would try and dissuade them from their action and if they refused to see sense encourage the stewards / police to remove them, as used to happen in the old days when some clown throwing a missile was pointed out to the police by other members of the support.
This is the about the 6th time in recent years that the self-styled “best supporters in the world” have let the club and their fellow supporters down in Europe, while trying to take the moral high ground and shout about how sevco bigots should be punished.
2003 when our supporters were awarded UEFA and FIFA fair play awards is long in the past. These arseholes are not supporters of our great club. They are tarnishing the club’s name and giving the MSM all the ammunition they need to gleefully have a go at Celtic and their support and let’s face it they don’t need any encouragement.
Even if we had won the tie on Thursday, it’s the moronic actions of these few that would have made the headlines.
And I believe that the cowardly thug who hit the young fan with a bottle is still at large, no one having either the courage or the common decency to identify him.
There is an underbelly attaching themselves to our club, that have no right to be there and who have to be weeded out. If we don’t then we are no better than those other fans we are so quick to condemn.

Ronny will just have to suck it and accept that in football, as in most aspects of life, he who pays the piper calls the tune.
As for kicking off at ten o’clock. Morning or night, if it suits TV schedules it will happen.
It is now the armchair fan via subscriptions, who is firmly in control.
Sixty years ago, Robert Kelly and Harry Swann of Hibs were mocked as killjoys by all and sundry when they saw all this coming.
The real tragedy is when television is done with football, it will chew it up and spit it out and move on to the next cash cow.
My own view is that Scottish football in particular should be asking itself if the revenue from television fully compensates for the long lasting damage being done to the game?
Only my opinion.

Obviously I am “paranoid”, but these incidents have only happened the last few years; and the SMSM are dying/waiting for them to happen. I know of not one Celtic supporter who wants this kind of counter-productive $%^& to happen at our games. Not one. Every single one of us would weed them out.
Contrast the scenes at Seville, to the ones in another Euro final in Manchester. Are Celtic fans villains, or are maggots from a corpse sullying our name?
If you see this near you at a game – end it. Weed them out.

Sky did not come up with the 13.00 ko’s, it was Celtic as apparently people taking young kids to the game would still get home while it was daylight!!!! They had an online vote, which allegedly had 54% in favour of the early ko’s

PS the online vote was held in November, not June when you could decide against renewing your season ticket, if you knew you would be missing most games due to retiming.
