Celtic Diary Saturday January 31: You’d Better Not Sing, You’d Better Not Try

You’d better not sing, you’d better not try

You’d better not chant, I’m telling you why.

Scots Police are coming to town

Scots Police are coming to town.

Scottish policemen are in the  town

They’re making a list, they’re checking it twice,

They don’t really care who’s naughty or nice

Scots police are coming to town

Scots police are coming to town

Scottish policemen are in the  town.

They film you with their cameras,

when your seat you do take,

they trace you through computers,

You’d better be good for goodness sake!

You’d better be  good for goodness sake!

You’ll have to watch out,

You’ll need to take care,

Scottish police are fucking everywhere

Scots police are coming to town

Scots police are coming to town

Scottish policemen are in the town.

They come when you are sleeping,

From your bed they will you take

They take you in for questioning

You’d better be good for goodness sake

you’d better be good for goodness sake

So, don’t take a flag or a banner with you

So, do everything that they tell you to do

Scots police are coming to town

Scots police are coming to town

Scottish policemen are in the town.

The forces of law and order will be taking tomorrows game very seriously. Don’t do anything that can be construed as anything they can construe it to be. They will be using any methods they can to make sure no-one upsets anyone, no-one hits anyone and no-one has a good day out.

They are even employing the latest high tech methods to detect sectarian singing or chanting;

If you are going to the game, then stay safe , and stay away from the police. given half a chance they’ll get you for walking on the cracks in the pavement.

In fact, be careful in the house. They even have a motor that can pick up sectarian or offensive chatter of you are in your house watching the game

tv car

But if you are thinking of putting together a banner, and hoping to avoid being lifted for causing offence, then do it in Norwegian, as no-one can possibly be offended if they cannot understand it, and Ronny will understand it and tell the players what the message is.

A few catchy little phrases to help, no need to thank me.

Bare ikke kan få nok ( Just Can't Get Enough )
Du er ikke Rangers lenger ( You're not Rangers anymore )
Gå hjem ya hunerne
( It appears we have beaten you , despite a valiant and sporting effort, so maybe you should think about heading off,and maybe you can perhaps avoid the traffic. )

The press has been full of ex players offering their opinions on how the game will go, which isn’t surprising, as there seems to be a great deal of hype around the game. Thats because it is beng sold as a resumption of hostilities between the two Glasgow sides. Of course we know it isn’t, but it suits their agenda.

I’m fed up of that.

Tomorrows weather, combined with the fact that those powers that be have decided to use Hampden for the Dundee United -Aberdeen game as well today means that the pitch may not be suited to the slick , fast passing game Celtic prefer to employ. It might be worth noting, however, that several of the Second Rangers squad are approaching their forties, and its unlikely that the big pitch and heavy conditions will suit them at all.

And with that observation, any argument that the game might even be remotely close have disappeared out the window and along the road to the bus stop.

There is the possibility, again remote, that the Ibrox club will resort to a highly physical game, with several cynical fouls. Well, they usually do anyway, but again the relative fitness of the two sides means its unlikely that any of their players will get anywhere near enough to any of ours to kick them. They could throw stones at them , I suppose, but even then would probably end up straining a back muscle or something.

Disrespectful ? Probably.

An accurate and honest opinion of the relative merits of each side ? Absolutely.

Most Celtic supporters would struggle to offer a strongest line up from what they know of the current squad at Ibrox, and anyway, its irrelevant who hey field, as their players will be less fit, they will be slower, and they will be less talented than the ones at Celtic. No matter how much you dress it up as an “Old Firm ” game where form doesn’t matter, and anything can happen, the facts are simple,

Second Rangers are adrift in a division of the league below the one currently led by Celtic. They are not a good side, and that will be evident tomorrow.

They are into their second manager of the season already, and he resigned a couple of weeks ago.

The players are a mix of average youngsters and over the hill cloggers, all of which , more or less, are available on a pre contract this month should anyone want to snap them up for free.

No-one has.

If Celtic play to their strengths, quick passing, plenty of movement and chasing down their opponents in possession, then it will be a non event  football wise, a one sided game which probably doesn;t even deserve to be described as a “match ”

ts really that simple.

Manager Ronny Deila hasn’t allowed himself to get caught up in the hype. He knows the score. A win tomorrow sets up the first leg of a memorable treble, and thats without European success, which may not be likely, but isn’t impossible.

Especially with a confident side playing as a team.

He’ll have Craig Gordon in goal, Mikael Lustig at right back, Emilio Izaguerre at left back and Jason Denaayer will partner Virgil van Dijk at the back. The full backs will bomd forward, and the centre backs will take it in turns to mop up the long hopeful balls punted toward them every time the Ibrox side have possession.

Scott Brown and Nir bitton will harass the midfield and protect the back line, whilst also feeding the next three of Kris Commons, Stefan Johansen and Anthony Stokes, who will also harass the defenders if play breaks down when they attemopt to supply john Guidetti.

There are whispers that Guidetti is not quite fit, which leaves room for Leigh /griffiths, who i think would be a better option up front, but I think Deila will go with the Swede. This is entirely based on the fact that its impossible to predict a Deila line up, and if one of thise is wrong i hope its Griffiths who gets the nod.

Predictions ?

Well, that 7-0 would be nice, but any win will do. I have to think it will be a higher victory than most, although the Celts may settle for four or five and ease off, purely so they don’t get injured ahead of the big game to come against Dundee next week, after all , thats a level up in opposition, and theres no need to get crocked when you are well ahead against a lower league side.

A betting man would be on a high number of bookings-Celtics full backs, and Scott Brown are certs to be shown a card, as are . well, McCulloch, Black, Miller, that fat bloke who eats crisps, and to be honest, thats all i know about them.

But from what I’ve seen, perhaps the only song around Hampden tomorrow should really be

You’re not Very Good….

Disrespectful enough yet ? Probably

An honest and valid opinion.

Absolutely.

Jimmy McGrory scored his last goal for Celtic against Desmond Whites Queens Park. White of course , went on to be chairman of Celtic.

Who is this, and who are the opponents ?

By the way, i want to tell you about a real, genuine Celtic supporter, who had a couple of tickets for tomorrows game available,

Afternoon Ralph,
When we are 5-0 up tomorrow I think the camera man should turn his camera to the supporters of both sides for the remainder of the match.
The contrast between them would make good viewing.
I’m going for 6-0 tomorrow, Guidetti 3 Griffiths 3!

“Free at last! Free at last!
Thank God Almighty,…(I am) free at last!” (Martin Luther King Jnr.

It is good to be back and to catch up on blogs and comments of the past week or so. It is quite disconcerting to come back to so much focus on an illusion, to a figment of desperate media lack-of-imaginations and to the 30 pieces of silver so readily grasped by ex players. Thank God for the sword of Tommy Boyd that unequivocally slashed the ears of untruth right off. Now there’s a good reason to read the bible. The excuse is to confirm my facts :).

I was used to being sick in the stomach and in many other places too when the old Celtic/Rangers games crept nearer. I have the same nausea now just because there is a club at Ibrox that we have to play. The disgust that this “entity” even exists has been there and has never left me since 14th June 2012. It intensified when the manipulators at Hampden wangled its entry into Scottish football by bending the rules beyond even the limits of the supple willow tree. There were the moments of relief when I believed I would never see my beloved club ever having to face the new design again. That was shattered on 28th October 2014 when I realised the impossible had once again become possible. And so it came to pass on that day that my incurable illness would be for life – at least till the next liquidation. To conclude, no I am not happy this game is on. I will be hibernating in some dark corner with my nuts. They say if you rub them round in the palm of your hand you can be transported from reality for a short time – I am hoping about 2 hours though I have never managed to make anything last that long in my life. My final word is, some are being a bit too cocky (excuse my reference to nuts again) about the outcome. Our history shows we have been none too convincing over the years in cups, in semis and in finals against even the weakest of clubs never mind a non existent one. Recent games have shown that goals win games, not dominance. And our dear friends Barcelona found out oh so sorely how easily an underdog can bite the arse of you. I pray that by the time my nuts have been devoured, news of a demolition at Hampden will be widespread. However, I will not be comfortable till I see the rubble (should that be rabble) before my eyes. Go Bhoys and reek havoc but watch ye’r backs. Even more so my fellow supporters. Keep safe.

I have been with Celtic supporters, watched Celtic supporters and listened to Celtic supporters for a very long time. I have witnessed and heard many things from them I would not wish my kids to see or hear and some things that have offended my sensitive Christian eyes and ears – and other places when my leg has been pissed on from behind. But, seriously, I have never heard nor even heard of the song about the Ibrox disaster till I picked it up on the blogs. However, I was deeply saddened to hear one or two had heard the unacceptable offensive version sung and if anyone reading this has sung even the first few words, they should be thoroughly ashamed. Anyone who was at that game knows he or she was deeply affected no matter what side of the divide they adhered to. It was a period of genuine grief, individual support and a coming together of separate minds that I have never before or since witnessed in Scottish society. God bless all involved and shame on those who disrespect their memory.

On a lighter note, Mr. D. White (certainly not our “Whyte Knight”, more our Money Skimmer Supreme) played in goal for Queens Park. It so happened he was in goal when Jimmy Mc Grory played his final game for Celtic (I think we won). I just missed it :).

I had planned to post this in Friday’s comments but I have just seen Saturday Diary has appeared so I will have to add another few thousand words I suppose. No way or someone will put me in the middle of the opposition (I know that is not a precise description but you all know the others) terracing tomorrow. That would be sore and likely to be detrimental to my nuts.

Can I begin by commenting on the police. Your parody of the law officers and the genuinely funny comments is great. However, I have it on good authority that the majority of the Jock McPeelers are not looking forward to this whole shebang. The offensive law – words chosen deliberately – is their biggest pain in their combined rear ends and there is not a little dread amongst those detailed for looking after the wild bears tomorrow. Much of what they do – and remember they are forced to do it – stems from a career driven megalomania of “top brass” (the higher, the more disillusioned). The ordinary cop is finding it as hard to justify his role as the public do to understand it. Is it not the case, as in Scottish football, that our frustrations should be directed towards those who dictate rather than those who serve. Just a thought on a difficult day for the police and not “only an excuse“.

I am have very little to say about much else given my rants above. Media, players and all other gobs that spout in public should be in my bin for collection on Wednesday morning and theoretically (conscious of that protection you suggested) incinerated by dinner time.

As for comment on the game. Since for me it does not exist, I see no point in saying anything about a mythical fixture. That is, unless you are desperate for a new grim(m’s) fairytale – Oh, brother, not today.

Finally, respect to John though I can not understand why he would want the items. Sympathy to Tony. I guess this non-game has produced a wonderful outcome after all. You guys have displayed all that is best about our support. John, stay safe and Tony, thoughts and prayers are with you. May mum rest in peace. She must have been quite a lady to have a son like you.

Picture is Tommy v Innsbruck 1977. Score Inn’b 3 – Celtic 0. Other info:

Played at neutral venue of Lehen Stadion, Salzburg after Innsbruck were punished for crowd trouble.
Celtic stay in the hotel in which Richard Nixon had stayed in previously as US president.
Celtic played in unusual all yellow shirts, socks and shorts.
McAdam, Munro and Dowie are all ineligible to play.
Celtic bring German striker Dieter Knapper back with them to Scotland on trial.
Lynch is the first Celt to be ordered off in Europe since Bobby Lennox against Olympiakos in 1974.
Innsbruck went out in the next round to Borussia Munchengladbach on away goals after drawing 3-3 on aggregate.

It was not very taxing finding this. Did I get an unfair advantage and should I give you the trophy back? Ask Regan and Doncaster. They are fine chaps whom do bending in the wind expertly.

after today’s semi final, Jackie Mac was complaining about the pitch cutting up and not suiting United’s passing game.
Can’t imagine what it will be like tomorrow.
This is a new pitch – relaid after the Commonwealth Games – why is it so bad already?

That’s what happens when you try to lay a new pitch outwith the traditional growing seasons of Spring and Summer.Celtic Park has been poor as well, but not as bad as Hampden looked today.

Seriously deila, sign Trent Sainsbury. Big, strong, fast, great awareness and positioning, and can play with the ball at his feet. He’ll cost fuck all, and we’re going to lose Virgil, Efe, and Denaayer at seasons end.

That’s my biggest concern outta this window… No new centre half.

Ross County, ICT (twice) and most recently Morton still fresh in my head, take nothing for granted, approach it the right way and go for it.

C’mon CELTIC do not give up from gun to tape, 100% all of the time and victory will be assured, ok if we are five or six up with fifteen to go possession will suffice.

Many times this season we have struggled against teams not as good as Sevco. We control the ball, get loads of chances, then scrape 1-0. Where are these truckloads of goals gonnae come from? I can see mebbe 2-0 or 2-1 but all this hype worries me some. A hard-fought 2-1 might be it, or even penalties, where anything can happen then. Bhoys, cockiness and triumpalism doesn’t suit us. Let’s keep 11 on the pitch, keep the heid, and just win. I put my money on Griffiths to make a difference. I see the point about Ambrose or Denayer but let’s begin with Denayer and see how it goes. What we want and what we get are two different things. Just win.

Good morning guys. This is it. I’m worried our manager has no experience of a celtic v rangers game. Hope he keeps it simple. Sooner this match is over the better. Hail hail

A job well done! It might have been more but for some poor refereeing. The pitch worked against us more than them. Broonie! What can you say? Van Dijk won everything in the air. We did what we had to do. A good lineup and good strategy, no complaints at all. Well done Bhoys.
