Celtic Diary Tuesday December 30: Celts To Spend Big In January

The senior football pundit in Scotland, Radio Clydes Hugh Keevins confirmed last night that Celtic are about to spend heavily in next months transfer window.

Alright, what he actually said was that Celtic wouldn’t buy anyone in the transfer window, but such is the degree of accuracy over the years in the mans pronouncements, its clear that Peter has given Ronny the debit card and told him to blow the lot.

Theres no need to go over Keevins track record when it comes to his bold predictions, they are well documented, but supporters can take hope from the fact that he is adamant Celtic won’t spend, and thats good enough for me.

Oh , alright. Just one;

I don’t know what I find more laughable; the fact that Celtic cannot find £500,000 from their biscuit tin to sign a proven talent like John Spencer, or the fact that they then spent £300,000 on one of Dr. Jo’s old pals, the unknown Lubomir Moravcik!”
Hugh Keevins  Sunday Mail; Nov 1998

I will never tire of reading that quote.

It may be that a couple of players will leave to finance the shopping spree, and despite asurances that Virgil van Dijk is having the time of his life in Glasgow, the papers have begun-or his agent has-to tout him for a move;

Embedded image permalink

Notice in the text of that report a player by the name of Max Diskerud. You know the one. He’s Norwegian and available on a free and the reporter has decided that means we will be in for him. Same as the fellow at Cardiff, whose name escapes me for the moment. The midfielder who was at Manchester Utd but is now also available on a free.

Anyway, Diskeruds father didn’t sound in the least bit desperate to help his son get another job;

“Ronny Deila is a fantastic guy, a good person and is a coach I’ve been following closely, Mix is free to leave Rosenborg.”

This simply shows that whoever Celtic are after, it won’t be in the papers first. clearly, they have no idea who is on Ronnys shopping list.

The first exit from Celtic Park took place yesterday, Jo Inge Berget went back to Cardiff after his haircut failed to impress anyone, and that frees up a place in the locker room for someone else.

He won’t be the last to leave, and hopefully Deila realises that there are other positions to strengthen rather than out on the wing.

Any hopes Celtic had of landing the Dundee Utd duo Nadir Ciftci and Stuart Armstrong appear to have been dashed by United chief Stephen Thompson;

We are not keen on selling anybody and don’t have to do so.

“But we understand there is a price for everybody and if a club makes an appropriate offer then we will have a decision to make.

“The important point is we have set the bar at a certain level in the summer and I don’t expect us to move that bar in a downward direction.

“We lost Andrew Robertson and Ryan Gauld but felt satisfied that we had been properly compensated.

“That would have to be the case with any of our players as we don’t have to sell those who are under contract.”

Although a figure of £6m has been mentioned in the press as the amount it would take to prise the pair away, theres no mention of that from Thompson, but the implication is there in the comparison with Robertson and Gauld.

In fact, what Thompson was really implying was that Celtic could go take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut.

Which is fair enough, because from his point of view when you look at the money previous Hoops regimes have blown on an assortment of unknown diddies, then he is right to hold out for more.

One promising young player from the lower tiers we appear to have missed the boat with is Second Rangers midfielder Lewis MacLeod, who like Norwegian wonderkid Martin Odegaard is wanted by all of Europes top clubs.

Cunningly, though, the player has elected to consider a smaller club for his first step into the big time, and is having a medical at Brentford, with a view to joining the English giants on New Years Day, a fee of £1m already being agreed.

Which will go straight to Mike Ashley to pay him back some of the money he is due.

If only the press had made us aware of such a talent being available, and apparently its only Davie Weir, who coaches for the North Londoners , and his influence that secured the move, beating off other teams who it seems would rather not be mentioned at this point.

Davie Weir. Remember him?

All of this means that the pre closing down sale at Ibrox has begun.

And its not only the players who are going. Unconfirmed reports last night hinted that club kitman Jimmy Bell and his no.2, son Martin have been handed their jotters in a bid to save money. Unconfirmed reports say that the pair were on around £160-170,000 a year between them to clean the kits and drive the team bus at the club.

Nice work if you can get it, and whilst its never nice to see someone lose their job over christmas, this has to be the exception. If only for the mans actions when everyone else applauded the life of Jimmy johnstone, after the wee man passed away;

Embedded image permalink

It could be argued that he preferred a minutes silence rather than the applause, but we hear that Alex MacLeish gave him a proper kicking in the dressing room afterwards, so perhaps that wasn’t the case.

Nobody has come in for Beram Kayal yet, but the stories linking Kris commons with Bolton won’t go away, but again we have to be careful of lazy reporting. Islam Feruz, now finished his loan over at OFI Crete is also looking for a club, and he’s been linked with Bolton as well.

Unless we want the little rat back.

Celtic scoring against Ajax back in the days when both were major forces in Europe featured yesterday, and today we feature two men who did a lot for Scottish football when they began to tear the foundations out of the old club at Ibrox.

Question is, where are they now ?

Those you you concerned that the Ebola virus has been confirmed in glasgow should take comfort from the fact that the city has a modern contagious diseases unit, and Ebola is just the latest in a long line of deadly diseases treated there. There is little or no risk to the public. These guys in the hospital know what they are doing.

However, I’m a little concerned its appeared in the city as it means the virus is now resistant to alcohol.

calling Islam Feruz a rat is over the top;he was a teenager who had his head turned by the offer of a lot of money. he would lilely have been a regular in our first team if he’d stayed; so maybe he regrets it now. Not on to “argue” guys…but…
Lawwell has publicly stated ( twice) that the Manager has the final say on all player’s comings and goings.
Anyone know if that’s true…or not ?

I tried posting the same thing earlier, but post disappeared into ether. I thought NL confirmed that he had final say in signings . Maybe he was given a take it or leave it option, however, buck stops with him.

Lawwell also said Scottish based players aren’t good enough, but now we want them ??
The manager having the final say means nothing.
Trust is placed on John Park’s judgement. Many
clubs,e.g. Newcastle operate this way. With the Manager,in effect, solely in charge of coaching.

This was my Understanding too.
Lenny gives Park the brief waht type of player he’s after and in what position Prak comes back with a list that’s available.
Lenny picks his preference and Lawwell works his way through the list.
Lenny gives the nod on final choice.

Seems to me we have a few on here who are deluded.

Lenny walked out on us. He had plenty of unfinished business here too. Winning a cup or two for a start. We would be in a much better position with him but he has found the team of his dreams. So be it. We may all be Neil Lennon but some of this mess is his doing, including some crap signings which still haunt us. He has a great spirit and tremendous courage but…he ain’t here and won’t be coming back. I don’t blame him for leaving; I think Scottish bigotry drove him out not Lawwell.

I think our Boards lack of Ambition made his and Johans task impossible myself.
Everytime they seem to be getting somewhere Pistol Pete pulled the trigger and Boom the best players were gone.
The Board are Complicit in the position we find ourselves in now.

The fact we still owe the Co-Op £14.4m and the final payment of £12.4m is due in July 2019 has a large part to play in this I feel.

It’s all there in Black and White in the Figures if you need proof ask.

Did anyone else grow up singing a song about not caring if we win, lose or draw? Or about being faithful through and through? Visited Scotland over Christmas and managed to attend Paradise – it is just great to be there and see the green and white Hoops! Now I admit that the football on show against Ross County was poor but fellow Tims, PLEASE refrain from booing our team / players……I was always taught that this was against our ‘religion’ so was very disappointed to hear this act at HT & FT. THE GREATEST SUPPORTERS IN THE WORLD DO NOT DO THIS. If you have the privilege of being able to attend most games and agree with me then please have words with the unenlightened! Finally, my three weans were with me at game and were blown away by The Green Brigade – I then told them all about The Jungle! KTF Bhoys!

AntonDeclan,
We are all together in our wish for a strong Celtic that has a fair bit of flair in it.
There is problems in the current team and you can’t just have blind faith, shut your eyes and hope everything will be OK.
We are all passionate about Celtic and we all don’t have the same opinions at times.
The problems need addressing or we could be heading for a very poor season.
There are problems in defence, midfield creativity and lack of consistent goalscorers up front, that is where we are.
Mediocre SPFL sides are taking points of us regularly, not good enough!

Cheers honest Hoops,
Can it really be difficult putting a team together?
I mean you start with a good keeper, a right back who can defend and be comfortable in possession and playing accurate passes to midfielders, same with the left back.
Two central defenders who are commanding in the air, ferocious but fair in the tackle and have real pace.
A left midfielder who is stronger on his left foot, can run and cross accurately while staying onside and has the ability to get in behind their full back.
Likewise the right midfielder, great touch, bit of skill and providing Davie Proven type delivery into the box.
At least one midfielder who likes a tackle and protects his team mates and another midfielder who can split a defence with a pass.
Finally, two strikers up front who want to be in the box on the end of things, Celtic strikers should be aiming for 30 plus goals each per season.

But what do I know, I’m just a supporter m8. HH!

I think too many of our Support including yourself have developed Hunitis in the past 14 years or so.
You and those like you have got accustomed to winning regularly and so through time have developed the very hun like trait of thinking we are beyond losing games and should walk to the title swaggering past the rest as we go.

I find that sad as a Celtic fan of over 4 Decades.

Every team must be given respect, every point must be earned in my opinion and there are going to be times when Celtic are not going to take their chances and teams are going to have a go.

I welcome this, I welcome a challenge from Aberdeen ,Dundee United or whoever because without that Challenge at this end you can forget making a real fist of it In Europe.

Sad days indeed when a new Boss does not get the time required to make his Mark and sign his own men without fans clambering for his head.

I’m all for a strong scottish league I’ve wanted it for years, but all I’m saying is I don’t want my club downsized. That’s what’s happening. I will support delia one hundred per cent. I feel for the man. I was thumping the air as he was after the aberdeen game, clapping like a mad man. Because I see he cares now for the club, just like me. I’m just frustrated like many fans. I don’t deal in if’s and and’s London I deal in here and now.
Rangers are deid through years of miss Management.
Hibd were rank last Year and Hearts were run into the ground by deluded megalomaniac.

All self inflicted.

Not our fault but inevitably something we as a Club have had to deal with.

I’m not frustrated with the current side myself I see a team not hitting top form yet who are creating more than enough to win every game.

Not one side has played this team off the Park yet in Scotland.

Europe is an entirely different ball game.
It’s going to take Deila at least a Season to suss it out.
As it did Lenny before him.

Europa League is our Level now last Seasons poor showing showed that.

I don’t enjoy losing games but at the same time I accept sometimes we will and sometimes we won’t even though it wasn’t pretty.

The squad needs time and I believe the goals will come soon enough.

Who fiddled while Rome burned? I find it amusing that people are calling fellow Celtic fans huns because they care and are alarmed by the misdirection and mismanagement of our club. Charlie, I have been going to the Park for 50 years and have witnessed all the ups and downs in that time, but it doesn’t diminish the love I have for our club.
I am no glory hunter and I have never, ever booed a Celtic player in all those years. I SAT one sunny Spring evening in 1984 in the Jungle when it was still terracing when just over 4,000 people attended a meaningless league game against Dundee and I will be there on Thursday to cheer them on. What is galling, is looking around the stadium and seeing it just over a third full, that scares the life out of me and will set the club back even further, with further down sizing an inevitability with the way the people that run the club think and work.
I am all for a competitive league, but when it involves us going backwards at an alarming rate and fellow fans thinking that is acceptable, then we really are in trouble.
You know what I think of Ronny and Johnny, my criticism is not just from the outside looking in, but from what I hear from within.

no one calling anyone a Hun you evidently have an issue with reading a sentence and comprehending it.
Not the first time either I have noticed.
“Hunitis” ie overconfident, over inflated view of who you are and in denial of the fact we are no longer a big deal in the big Scheme of things.
These are traits I associate with deluded huns.
There are many more of course but those belong to them and them alone.
None of which I would apply to a fellow Celt.
Success breeds it’s own problems within a support a certain amount of arrogance emerges and if not kept in check can develop further into Hunitis.

There is no cure btw.

Spot on Eddie.
For the last time I never called anyone a hun.
I said hunlike traits.
That means similar too not the same.

The Manager needs time that’s the bottom line.
The signs are there this could well be a good appointment.
Some of you can’t see the woods for the trees.
Poor teams don’t create 15 chances a game on average.
Neither do poor systems.

We Averaged approx 17 Chances per Game on the Domestic front.
That’s a chance created on Average of every 5 minutes of every game so far.

The System works.

It’s purely down to finishing.
Or lack of it.

I share the concerns of many of you guys as we navigate through this “transitional” season under a new manager. It would have been great, but too good to be true, if we had qualified for the Champions League, qualified from the section we were in, raced to a 15 point lead in the league by Christmas, hammered all Opposition in the Cups etc etc. almost everyone admitted that we needed to give the new guy time, but so many said the words but haven’t enacted them. I still believe:-
1) We’ll win the League by around 10 points.
2) We’ll get past Inter..although at this moment I don’t see us in the Final.
3) We’ll win 1 of the cups.
4) Next season Ronnie will have settled in, learned from his mistakes/experiences and will get the players playing the way the fans expect/demand.
5) Ronnie will just need to learn to give a bawling out to those who don’t perform or who think they don’t need to break sweat EVERY game. Instilling a bit of the fear factor can get players to up their game…just ask Alex Ferguson.
In short, while things have not been as good as we want, I honestly think we’ll turn the corner and put the rot behind us.
Here comes that nice wee nurse with my medication. Hail Hail.

When England sent four of the best …..and they didn’t meet with much success….I seem to remember the mighty Brentford might have been one of the teams that Willie Maley’s Immortal Hoops put to the sword before the trophy took permanent pride of place in the Kerrydale Street trophy room……….so my great Granda told me…..aye right!!

Maybe Messi McLeod has been listening to Charlie and the Bhoys and thinks that Brentford are one of England’s top four……hahahaha

Lee Waldo Wallace and his agent are trying to line up a move out of Greyskull next…….Brentford’s once massive rivals, Accrington Stanley, are rumoured to be interested in taking a punt on seeing if possibly the best left back in Europe can realise his potential at a higher level to where he now treads water.

Charlie you really think we are progressing this season? I understand your unbending support for the manager. That said I am failing to see the plan. Maybe it’s me. Are you saying it is Hun like to expect to win 90% plus of games in the SPL? I think it is a celtic like expectation to win against, with all due respect to them, pish SPL teams mostly full of hackers. Given the current situation in Scotland, we should be walking this league not toiling more often than not and listening to Delia telling us how we are progressing. I hope I’m wrong and you can tell me told you so! Also trying to sign an Norwegian who is available worries me greatly!

I feel, that hes being hung out to dry a wee bit. Collins wasnt his choice, how much say has he got on transfers?what’s his budget? The board better back him. There the ones that put him in this situation. It’s not his fault he was offered the job. He was ambitious and took it, he must be wondering what he’s got himself into. It’s all on the board full stop. Delia will do it, he’ll pump rangers and give us a good show against inter. Trust me. Hail. Hail

London Celtic,
I hope you’re correct with those predictions m8, we might well give the Huns a pumping but can’t see anything other than two mediocre performances v Inter.
Second Rangers is no longer a gauge of where we are as a team, it is the rest of the SPFL sides, among the most average of these sides have made Celtic look vulnerable this year, it is shocking, below standard but some won’t see it!

Devoy45

Monti, I see it too and so do many others. None of us are Huns or triumphalists but we do know our history and some of it has been pretty bleak at times. Not so many years ago we finished fifth and were not many points off relegation. We all remember the Huns nine in a row. We have had some great times since then but at the back of our minds we don’t want to go back to the dark days. Something is wrong with our current team and needs fixed quickly. I will give Deila all the time he needs but he must win the league and acknowledge the only real transition is his, not the team’s which is pretty intact and was nearly unbeatable last year. How does a winning team become a faltering team in less than a year?

Yes,the end of the season is the time to judge Ronny. However, the next 2 months are HUGE.Sevco is a must win, with plenty to spare. The following
week Dundee away is also a must win.We won’t get passed Inter,so these aren’t must wins. However,
every league game is a must win, until we play the sheep at the end of February. If we beat them,I would hope we are 7 odd points ahead. If not….
