Celtic Diary Monday December 22: Imperfect Day

With a wee bit of shopping to do yesterday, and the game kicking off at the ridiculous time of 12.15, I decided to record the game and get everything else done first, meaning to sit down later in the afternoon to watch it.

However, a lack of understaning when it comes to modern technology meant that when I finally got a chance to view it, for some reason the first image I got was Ronny deila telling us we need to score more goals above a caption that said DNU 2-1 CEL. They’d even spelt DUN wrong.

So, let me guess…. Adam Matthews and Efe Ambrose were shite, John Guidetti still has his head up his arse and either we had a goal chalked off and a penalty clain turned down.

Ronny said;

“We are not taking our chances. That’s our main issue just now,”

“We lost the game because we weren’t effective enough. It’s a challenge we’ve faced in the last three or four games where we’ve created a lot of chances but don’t take them.

“We gave two easy goals away. We let them go inside and into the box instead of pushing them wide.

“We can talk about creating chances but we have to be more effective. In the last three or four matches we have created 10 to 15 chances in each but in the end if you don’t score then you lose matches and that’s what happened today.

“I’m not disappointed in the way we played. I think we played quite well especially in the first half.

“We pressed them and were all over them and created chances but we gave away a stupid goal. All that was missing was putting the ball in the net and that’s the most important thing in football.”

 Leigh Griffiths, who has had a really good week, came on and scored one and hit the post after, and left us all wondering why he isn’t part of a two man strike force, because whatever else you may say about the system, however much you want to blame it on individuals, one up front is clearly not working, and its a waste to have two capable strikers on the bench every week.

 Another spectacular honest mistake saw Stefan Scepovics effort ruled offside even though you didn’t even need replays to see he wasn’t

Embedded image permalink

Izaguerre, bottom middle, played the ball into the path of the Serb, who slotted behind the keeper. A perfectly positioned linesman got it wrong.

 There was some controversy over a penalty claim when John guidetti was barged off the ball in the box. Shoulder to shoulder ? Well, possibly, and the rule is all about doubt, so we’ll have to accept that one.

 However, there was this one, which seems to have escaped everyones notice;

Embedded image permalink

 Just a hint of impediment there…

But if we had scored enough goals, then none of that would have mattered. If we had bothered to defend properly, then none of that would have mattered. Whereas Dundee Utd forward Neftar Ciftci deserves a lot of praise for his goal and his assist, they could have been prevented.

 Adam Matthews left his man inmarked, allowing him to head home for the second, and Efe ambrose and Nir Bitton combined for the first.

 A collective arse kicking session is needed, and maybe a rethink on the tactics.

 Yes, we are creating chances, and yes we could arguably also be dominating games, but we are not scoring goals. Which is a pretty significant part of any game plan.

 Deila agrees;

 it’s the fourth match now that we have created eight to 14 chances but when you score one goal that is way too little. We have to be more effective at putting the ball into the net.

 Fair enough, but will he axe Guidetti ? Will he start with Griffiths, bizarrely behind Scepovic in the pecking order ? Will he go with two up front, thus doubling our chances of finding someone in the box ?

 Theres something else, even more worrying, judging by what he said yesterday…

“The disallowed goal is disappointing. But over a whole season it is even-Steven.”

 Thankfully, someone punched him before he aded that we would have to take it on the chin.

 So Celtic slip to just a four point lead over Aberdeen and Dundee United, and once again we cannot be absolutely sure of winning the league.

I suppose its what we wanted really.

 Yesterday went from bad to worse when I found out that the evenings telly would be dominated by BBCs “The Apprentice “, which has nothing to do with marching bands in July, but is in fact a programme for young entreprenuers who have competed over a number of weeks to avoid being fired by a man who hasn’t even hired them yet.

 Or something like that.

 Last night was the final, between  a man with an idea to sell advertising space on the internet, and a woman who wanted to make it easier to buy different coloured tights. The economy is in safe hands after all.

 Anyhow, this nonsense took up two hours, and the wife is a fan, so i toddled off into another room and had a look at the interweb.

 And the day got even worse, illustratde by Night Of The Living Rednecks on KDS;

Embedded image permalink

Which is in marked contrast to what he has always said;

Embedded image permalink

 Nope, apparently he runs like fuck as soon as it looks like things are going tits up.

We knew he wouldn’t hang around for the game against Celtic in February, but it appears he didn’t fancy the AGM either. Not surprising, given the treatment he and his cronies got last year.

 Looking at that picture, theres not many of them left anymore…

McCoist has been placed on gardening leave, and Kenny MacDowell will take over until the end of the season, or the end of this particular entity, whichever comes first.

Its a major fall from grace for McCoist, who once was amongst Europes top managers

Embedded image permalink

 However, we hear cheeky chappie has already lined up another job;

Embedded image permalink

His former colleagues have rallied round, Barry Ferguson called it the saddest day in the whole scenario at Ibrox, both Andy gorams had their say, and Radio Clyde pundit Derek Johnstone took to comfort eating;

Embedded image permalink

 The pantomime continues today with the AGM, where the club /company/basket case will make their latest appeal for more money.

 The statement they will make is below;

AGM statement

 Its fairly long, but can be summed up thus;

shit

In it , they blame the media, Scottish football and everyone else they can think of for their demise. Apprently no-one likes them, and tey haven’t been given enough help.

No-one likes them ?

 How did they take so long to figure that out ?

Fair play to them though, after Celtic supporters claimed former  Coronation Street lass Michelle Keegan as one of their own,

keegan

they hit back with their own beauty

Embedded image permalink

 We are the -well, I’m not entirely sure exactly what they are.

With McCoist now away, there are no links to the old club anymore, and whilst the bold Ally didn’t want to be witness to a tanking from Celtic, it looks more and more likely that none of us will get to see it.

Selfish bastard. Still, as long as he-and new boss Kenny MacDowell-are happy.

Embedded image permalink

 The 1976 League Cup final defeat to Aberdeen was pictured in Saturdays diary, which brought back some not so fond memories for a lot of you.

 Whats going on here, and whats the connection between the two players ?

 Embedded image permalink

And finally, I love this picture. From a Third Lanark-Celtic game that was called off back in the day;

Great diary,sir.Even after a defeat !
The pic of fat Sleekit and the Zombie stunner are hilarious.
Then we have our beautiful Michelle.But andybhoy put a link in last week,with her in white bikini,which you should put up.
The game ? Ralph you will get the wrath of Charlie Saiz for having the audacity to suggest ONE striker isn’t working.Maybe
he will refrain from saying your talking shit and are a clown,
like he calls other fellow posters.
So,for Charlie,the stats man, FACTS when we play 2 up,MON,
WGS and Lenny have averaged in each season when they were in charge,league goals :
MON 94.4,WGS 80.5,Lenny 90.75
So far,nearly half way through the season,we have scored 34
league goals with ONE central striker.Averaging 2 goals a game.
Is this good enough ? NO
Will we win the league ? YES
I rest my case,over to you Charlie m8.

I’ve said from day one; 4-4-2 in the SPL and I personally thought Leigh and Scepovic were brilliant as a front pair yesterday,too little too late by clueless Delia, Stokes is always selfish, Guiddy is not finding the strikers space in the box, Forrest to predicable in cutting in all the time, Matthews has lost more than one yard in pace!! WTF has happened to him lately??

A wee moan as I was hugely disappointed with the result yesterday but always Celtic through and through.

It’s Dave McKinnon (dying hun) and either Peter the pointer or Murdo McLeod. If it’s Murdo, he’s just done his cousin at Poundland.

Some OTT reactions yesterday, I’m not sure we have a divine right to win every game so losing 2-1 to the 2nd/3rd best team in Scotland at their own patch while disappointing is not the end of the world. You’d think St Mirren cuffed us 4-0 again but this time at Paradise.
The issue being focussed on is wrong with regards to the system, plenty chances but they’re not taken etc. The issue is the defence, Charlie what stats do you have to back up how the system works from a defensive point of view? Missing Lustig is not the only problem, agree that Matthews is shocking right now of course. Is it just Efe being Efe, Izzy being too keen to go forward, VVD’s mind on his next club, or are our holding players not doing what they need to protect? The system is not working defensively, stop focussing on the 2 up front debate as we will get creamed in Europe not because we can’t score but because The Sieve is back.

andybhoy

Reply to  Gerry

We’ve been getting creamed in Europe all season.
We don’t have the players to play this system at the moment and if Ronny sees this as the way forward then hopefully he has the players in mind that is going to make it work, otherwise, play to the players strengths and be a bit more flexible, because at the moment, as most clubs have sussed it out,just let us have the ball and let the sieve do the rest. Our formation is geared to more of a counter attacking set up and doesn’t work when they pile bodies behind the ball.

If you want cheered up in Christmas week,go to the daily dump
link,live at agm,video shows angry bears,chants of out out out,scumbags and get tae f**k,is all their,in audio.Brilliant !!
Judas McDowall will be their until end of transfer window,when they will punt anybody,they can get money for.Then we pump them,then the way is clear for the alleged swinger Davies to
take over.That’s my prediction.

Count how many Celtic players are in the box on Scepovic goal.
End of story.

Inadequate finishing
Drasticly Poor defending
Shite officiating
Decent United opposition

= Dropped points.

Fuck all to do with systems.

It’s got everything to do with systems, that’s why top managers make changes during games.

9 years ago
Reply to  Charlie Saiz

I’ve got to agree with charlie, we had the majority of possession & the majority of chances – we just couldn’t defend or score when it mattered.
My memory of going to Tannadice, regardless of who the manager was or how many strikers (?) we played, is it would be a close game normally settled by the odd goal. Yesterday’s game was no different

Dundee Utd had one less attempt on target and more corners, possession means nothing.

9 years ago
Reply to  andybhoy

Got to agree with Andybhoy!!

9 years ago
Reply to  andybhoy

…..because our forwards were unable to hit the target.
This is where the problem lies – the forwards are missing too many chances.
I’ve said a few times on here, I’d prefer Scepovic to Guidetti, but was shot down in flames. Maybe given a run in the team, Scepovic will prove to be the answer.
As for playing O’Connell instead of Ambrose, I’d play Griffiths there instead of Ambrose.

I wonder if the fans love-in wi’ Guidetti will take a back seat for a while noe, that’s three games in a row he couldn’t have hit a “coo on the erse wi’ a banjo”, surely we will not pay three million for him.

P.S. On a sadder note Celtic cost me 300 quid for a fiver yesterday!!

deadhead67
9 years ago

The main problem yesterday was that utd played shit and still won,the official were just their usual bigoted selves,2 pens on guidetti in the first half a goal given offside when player at least a yard on,the combination cheating officials and a duff manager and we had no chance
see the sun says we will be offloading Izzy,and replacing him with absolute load of tosh from ICT. Seems that after swinecastle Guidetti would need to be shot to be awarded a penalty

Big J
9 years ago

No ones yet to point the finger at Forrest for not marking / tracking back at the second goal – Matthews had a man and actually was telling Forrest, before the ball came in the box, to mark the Utd boy. Agree Mr Guidetti is maybe not the superstar a lot of folk thought he was – time now for Griffiths I think.Poor defending, poor finishing cost us but I really didnt think we played that badly – maybe it was the Sunday Cider blinkers I had on though !

If Ambrose had just hoofed the ball out for a throw in instead of a corner then we wouldn’t have needed a winger to bail us out.

Rangers chairman David Somers will tell the club’s shareholders that there is an “anti-Rangers feeling” pervading through Scottish football when he addresses the club’s AGM on Monday morning.

Seems someones asked Charles Green for tips on how to try and win over the Sevco Legion

As for Celtic…it was an OFF day, as in Oh For Fuxake Day. Efe makes an arse of it, then defence falls asleep. Time to gee up the squad with some rotation and some new blood\new exits. Oh look its January…ideal!

Desimond,
It may have been an off day but do you not think the managers team selection and tactics contributed to the ” off day “?
I do.

Flann1gan

On Ambrose, nice guy but terrible defender. Notwithstanding yesterday’s effort, he’s been awful for months/years.

Until Denayer is fit, I’d prefer someone from our development squad and get some game time? Why are managers so reluctant to give youth a chance?

9 years ago
Reply to  Flann1gan

Indeed, O’Connell has made the most of his few opportunities in the first team. Like I told those around me yesterday, we’d be better playing three at the back than a four including Ambrose, as at least with the three the other defenders would be under no illusion that Ambrose might defend …

Can we talk about this Gay marriage law
…….only joking!
Ronny Deila is doing my tits in with this one up front carry on, I don’t care how many chances we are creating, we aren’t taking them and over depending on Guidetti.
For me we must play with two strikers, Griffiths and Scepovic for a number if not all games.
Ambrose is no Steve Mccahill and is going to cost us big time this season.
Another honest mistake tho which shouldn’t be forgotten.
I watched Ambrose kick the ball out for a corner when all he had to do was knock it out for a throw in and get back into position.
He is terrible and should be shown the door in January!

Oh aye, The sieve is back. Van Dijk may be away and Denayer is on loan and Efe— well is Efe.
This is partly because strikers generally can’t track back so much. The more they defend the less they score. We need a system that allows people to catch breath and think things though. Maybe I am one of the OTT referred to above.
This team is not playing like champions. We are not scoring or defending.We are dropping points to just about everybody.If we don’t figure out what’s wrong (very soon)
We won’t wing any Cups
Inter will skin us
We will even be embarrassed by the Zombies!
Charlie Saiz, how are we going to win the League playing like this? The stats that really count are not looking so good.

As bad as our defence is somebody should have a word with Stefan Johansen about his part in the first goal at Tannadice. It was the interception of his slack pass to a teammate less than five yards away that led to the comedy of errors that cost us the goal ! Johansen is particularly guilty of being caught out with this same carelessness of pass in almost every game and I am wondering when our coaching staff are going to eradicate this from his game ? Perhaps once they have cured him of this they might then teach him how to score in one on ones with the opposing goalkeeper ! He can’t be faulted with the effort he puts in every game and I am sure that once he irons out these faults he is going to a Celtic great.
