Celtic Diary Friday December 12: Deila To Stamp His Mark On The Club

The first half of the season drew to a close in Zagreb last night as Celtic lost 4-3 to Dinamo , but with the hard work already done, its the hoops who will be in Mondays last 32 draw, and not the Croats, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

The “collapse ” of the side in the last two games may attract cause for concern from some quarters, in fact don’t be surprised if you see the odd cracked crest over the next couple of days, but the fact is Celtic had nothing to play for last night, and that was why Anthony Stokes, Scott Brown and James Forrest didn’t start, and Kris commons, Wakaso Mubarak and Calum MacGregor did.

Had Celtic been in Croatia to get a result, then everything would have been different in the preparation, but we weren’t so it wasn’t.

Manager Ronny Deila wasn’t happy, but there was a suspicion he wasn’t as unhappy as his words suggested;

“We were too open, that was the problem.

“We had the chance to win at 2-1 and it was disappointing that we gave away the victory. We have to take this with us to the next stage.

“We have the players but we have to think about the formation when we play away in Europe and what kind of players we use.

 “We were more offensive than we have been and we conceded too many goals.”

 “We have to be a lot, lot better in the next round.

“We will have players back who will give us more spirit so I am not frightened about that. But it was disappointing to give the victory away like we did, from being 2-1 up.”

 “It was a poor performance. We were not 100 per cent and there was a lack of intensity and aggression.

“It was disappointing that we weren’t up for the game.

“We scored three goals, that was a positive and I think the substitutes (Darnell Fisher, Liam Henderson and Anthony Stokes) were positive when they came on, but defensively we gave away too many chances and conceded four goals.

“You should win when you score three goals away in Europe.

“Individually, there were some bad performances but also as a team, as a back four we dropped too much and there was a lot of space between the defence and midfield and they got three chances from that at the start of the second-half.

“We were talking before the game about being compact and no balls in between us and we didn’t get that at the beginning of the second half.”

 Thats is one of our more unforgivable problems in Europe this season. We don’t seem to be able to hang on to a lead, but we have hung on often enough to still be in the competition. Of course, we will need to play better in the next round, but its very unlikely we’ll see a line up like lasts nights again anyway.

 What we did see was the end of a couple of Celtic careers.

 Beram Kayal was nowhere near the game, and this time next month its probably he will be nowhere near the club. He’s been telling everyone that he’s been trying to leave Celtic for mon ths, but it hasn’t occured to him yet that no-one seems to want him. Except for Maccabbi Tel Aviv, and with his contract expiring in the summer, a nominal fee has been mentioned and if the Israeli outfit agree to the amount Celtic have offered them, then he’s away.

 Kris Commons has a deal on the table, but its not what he wants. He wants to stay at Celtic, but claims the ball is in the clubs court. If they kick it towards him, he won’t be able to control it, which is why its probably better to let him go . Commons is one I would rather see stay, but with Stefan Johansen playing in the role Commons would prefer, then its probably time for him to have a look at schools in the Bolton area.

 Thats the harsh reality of football at this level. When someone comes in and is better at what you do than you are, then , however reluctantly, its time to move on. He’ll be fondly remembered for his contribution to the cause,

The deal has stalled because Celtic have only offered a year, and Commons wants two. Deep breath time, but if he can’t get into the side now, then a two year deal would be a little , well, silly.

 Good luck with whatever you do next, Kris, and thanks for everything. and thanks to your wife Lisa as well, she has been an absolute diamond with all her charity work.

 We would love for you to stay, but you must do whats best for you.

 Wakaso Mubarak got a rare start last night, and frankly was just taking up a jersey that could have been put to better use. Which, indeed it was when he was replaced by Anthony Stokes. When the Irishman took his now regular place on the left, Celtic scored within minutes, and created several other opportunities. Wakaso is a decent player, but he’s not going to be a first teamer.

 Calum MacGregor came in like a tornado back at the start of the season, but as we feared at the time, he is now too predictable for opponents, and is easily taken out of the game. Another loan spell to widen his experience would help, as there is something about him, but at this stage he isn’t going to break through.

 What has happened to Adam Matthews ? He played like he didn’t want to get his shirt dirty last night, or mess his hair up. But with Joe Ledley and Gary Hooper long gone, it seems the Welshman is just marking time until he joins them. When Mikael Lustig is fit, Matthews isn’t a first teamer. He has the quality, when its applied, theres no doubt about that, but , not surprisingly , he doesn’t want to be a benchwarmer, and to be fair he is better than that.

Efe Ambrose isn’t Deilas favourite. If Denaayer was fit, he wouldn’t be playing. I like the big guy. he’s, er, entertaining, and a Celtic defence without one player capable of turning a game against you with one touch wouldn’t be a Celtic defence. But he’ll be gone as soon as  we can replace him.

 Leigh Griffiths is working hard to get into the team. If he wants to stay, I suspect he’ll be allowed to. But he’s third in line for one spot in the team. As with Matthews, he’s better than that, and it doesn’t look like he’s ever going to be the number one. However, he does have the right attitude, and he knows where the goal is. so if he does stay, and does work hard, he could still make it as number one. But its whether or not he wants that.

 One who might not yet be at the end of his Celtic career is Virgil van Dijk. He said last night;

“If I left without playing Rangers it would be a little bit strange because as a Celtic player you need to play that game.”

 Look. I know he’s a big lad, but someone is going to have to bite the bullet and tell him.

rip rangers

 Unless the plan is not to tell him so he stays. In fact, if that entity south of the river keeps crashing every year or so, we could keep van Dijk for life.

 Ronny Deila has now had a few months to look at what he has at his disposal. He comes across as quite an affable guy, but if you’ve ever eaten mashed potato and bitten the fork by mistake , you’ll understand that theres a lot more to him than he lets on.

 He’s got a fair idea of who he wants to play, and how he wants them to play. Those players already mentioned, and the likes of Boerrigter, Tonev , Berget, Pukki, Balde and maybe even Scepovic are not names you should have printed on the back of any Celtic tops you buy the kids this Christmas.

 Any player who comes in will have to challenge his favoured eleven or so for a first team spot. Then, perhaps for the first time in a number of years, we will be ready for the UCL qualifiers well in advance.

And we can have a good crack at the Europa League. Celtic are 80/1 this morning to win it, and thats got to be worth a tenner of anyones money.

 Green tinted specs ? Absolutely. But looking at the list of possible opponents, its not as far fetched as you might think;

Another two months of practicing the Deila system, and a more settled side-Ronny has yet to field an unchanged line up in any game so far-and anything can happen.

 Would like to play Feyenoord though, that could be quite a memorable tie;

 Speaking of tops, we mentioned the possibility -alright, probability-of New Balance doing the strips next year, and AndyBhoy posted a picture in yesterdays diary. For those who didn’t see it;

 I like it. Its traditional, its got no braids of gold nor hats with feathers plumed, and it doesn’t say Nike on it.

Straightforward green and white hoops. The way it should be. Worldwide, its an iconic strip, a master of design instantly recognisable anywhere for what is is and what it stands for.

 Why mess about with it ?

 Another club who are bringing out new tops-well, not officially-are Second Rangers. Scotlands newest club are milking the occasion of their League cup semi final against Scotlands biggest club with a t-shirt to mark the historic occasion of their first meeting with Celtic;

 A trip back in time now, and Bobby Murdoch is a wee bit upset in this picture . Why ?

has Murdoch been sent off for looking at a player in blue in an aggressive manner?

Also, why would Griffiths want to be a goalkeeper?

Van Dijk will be staying because his value has, at least, halved. Last season we had a record breaking defense, this season we have broken our record for goals conceded in Europe.

Last nights game didn’t matter, we dropped two players, they dropped four/five, would like to have seen more of our younger guys. Fisher and Henderson made their first appearences under Deila and looked good when they came on.

New strip photo doesn’t work but maybe its my computer?

Good diary today. I agree about last night, I’m not that fussed about the result or performance really as it was nowhere near our first team. The main disappointment is our fringe players didn’t grab their chance to stake a claim to the 1st team.

I agree about Commons too. He was outstanding last season but you have to award contracts based on what you think players will do in the future, not what they’ve done in the past. Our biggest financial mistake in recent years is when we allowed MON to reward all his big players (Hartson, Sutton, Balde) with huge contracts when they were the wrong side of 30. Those contracts were basically a thank you for what they had done, they didn’t takeinto account that the players would decline over the period of the contract. We’re doing the right thinh not making the same mistake with Commons.

As I mentioned yesterday, the big thing we need to focus on in January transfer window are central defenders. We need to have 2 centres halves playing together and getting used to each other before the July CL qualifiers. If Big Virgil is leaving and Denayer is going back to Man City then it’s not going to be them.

Like the optomism after last night, not sure I share in it though. Bookies are rarely wrong so take a look at those odds again and recalibrate your expectations.
I know Charlie Saiz will do his nut but I’m fed up with our current ‘system’. I can honestly say last night is the first time I’ve been bored watching any team(s) play out a 4-3. I’m not blaming Ronny for that, I watched some top sides use the same set up the two nights previously and their games were also boring. I’m really finding it hard to work up enthusiasm at the moment.
We also need a plan B for when it doesn’t work, everyone should have a plan B regardless of how good plan A usually is.
Ach this is starting to become a rant, I best stop before I sound like a zombie!

Agree wi Morto I have to say, we made yet another average team look great last night, well get cuffed out the last 32 no matter who we get. However willing to belive (for now)its just cos RD doesn’t have his team playing his way yet, so its time he got a bit ruthless-he’s had half a season get rid of those he doesn’t fancy and build for the CL qualifiers next season.

Use the 3 domestic competitions to battle harden the mould of his team and add finishing touches were possible in the transfer windows.

RD’s got time but its finite, like patience

Another though, if Commons wants 2 years and the club want to offer him one why don’t they compromise and offer him one with a one year extension after X number of games?
If he’s in the team regularly he’ll get his 2nd year and if he’s not he’ll want away anyway so both sides win.

We had coefficient points to play for last night. It was not a meaningless game. Our European campaigns this season, all three of them, have been far from successful. We are very lucky to qualify from that EL group. We need to vastly improve just to get us back to where we were at the end of last season, never mind progressing further in Europe.

I am still unconvinced by Ronny. He says he’s disappointed the team weren’t up for the game last night. Who’s feckin’ fault is that?

On the plus side, at last Ronny’s realised that Biton can play a bit. It took him long enough. I say build the team round him, he’s the best midfield player we have.

Totally agree with you here Althetim. he says “We have the players but we have to think about the formation when we play away in Europe and what kind of players we use.” surely that’s exactly what he should have been doing since the Motherwell game. Ok so last night’s game was a dead ruber but I’d still rather be sat here talking about winning it rather than losing it.

“But looking at the list of possible opponents, its not as far fetched as you might think” Have another look. We shipped 4 against a team that came third in a poor group and We can only score one against the likes of Motherwell and Partick. Sorry to be so negative but with the current squad and the current system, can anyone see us beating any of the teams in column one or half of those in column 2?

Quote “its not as far fetched as you might think” … it bloody is 🙂

Celtic are a poor side at the moment, total void of creativity and passion, very luck to progress from the group, we will get pumped in the next round regardless who we get … sorry to say.

Considering this is the lesser likes of European football, what pisses me off… is I remember watching Basel marginally bet Celtic about 10 years ago and they have kick on since then and continue to compete at the top level, they are in an equal poor league and probably a poorer financial position, WHAT ARE THEY DOING RIGHT !!!!!!
I’ve been watch the hoops for 30+ years and this team is as poor as I’ve seen in that time, Gave Ronny the benefit till this point but I just don’t see any improvement.

WHAT ARE THEY DOING RIGHT.

jimbo , my first guess is their head honcho , whoever he is , has more than just a passing interest in his club’s affairs .
Unlike ours.
Said it before , and I’ll say it again , until the guy at the top either gets involved or , passes on the baton to someone who wants to, then we’ll just keep going round in ever decreasing circles.
Surprised there’s been no mention on here of the exodus from our Ladies side – citing lack of ambition on club’s part , as the reason.
Seems the apathy runs top to bottom at our club these days.

I think there was a mass exodus after they read my post the other day..”We should scrap the Womans Team as there is absolutely no point in having it whatsoever..none of them are going to make the first team”.
Sorry guys not a big fan of womans kick ball.

As I have mentioned a few times in the past, Ronny needs to coach better and talk less.

As I have mentioned before, With basically the same back 4 as last year, we are terrible! WE need a to bring in a GOOD coach for the back four. We lost Maljby and McGrain.

Ronny was talking up Kennedy’s knowledge and back ground. Maybe so, but that does not equate to experience on the field or coaching at the top level. NEED a coach for the defense!!!!!

Great game last night, but defensively attrocious, Mathews, McGregor should have been subbed in the first half. Henderson gave the midfield a bit of dig when he came on. Alastair finally bites the bullet, now we know why Butcher walked away from Motherwell, done deal

Nothing game last night.After first goal,you could see we were going to ship more.Punt Matthews to Bolton,he’s not progressed.Lustig is No1 right back.Give young Fisher,starting on Sunday,the chance to be back up.Commons is off,although deserves a compromised deal.Griffiths and Kayal are off.If Griffiths can’t get a game,like last night,then he has no future.
Lastly,Ronny could and should have played 4-4-2.Therefore we will always play 5-2-3-1.This worries me.As McGregor gets a game so he can fit into RD’s rigid system.

As you know,I meant Ronny’s masterplan of a system,4-2-3-1.
A solid 4 in the middle,with a strikeforce of Scepovic and
Griffiths,could have been played last night.Afterall,it was a non-event.But,NO,Ronny puts players in,even though they are out of form,as he feels compelled, to ALWAYS use 4-2-3-1.

Guys did anyone see the stats conserving nir biton? He had a 97per cent pass rate, 2 assists. There was more he covered alot of ground last night. We badly need to invest in a proven international Centre back. I was delighted to see scepovic score,hhopefully he’s turned a corner. Hail hail

He did all that and still can’t clear a fucking ball 15 yards outside the box without passing itto the opposition.
Another thing he’s as slow as Mulgrew across the deck and alot less savvy when it comes to dropping back when the FB’s bomb up the Park.

Just saying the bhoy has lot’s to learn not quite European level yet for me.

I actually said 30 minutes in both Mathews and Ambrose should be hooked at half time.
I would NEVER play them as a pairing again on the right in Europe.
Both were piss poor.
Mathews positional playlast night was fucking atrocious drifting inside constantly leaving large areas of the park for them to run into.
I would sell him and promote young Fisher to No2 spot.

Charlie Saiz

I don’t think last night was a lost causemyself several positives came out of it for me:
Scepovic proved he is a good target man in the area if you hit him with the right kind of service.
Took his goal well and should/could probably scored a hat-trick last night with a bit of luck.
He reminds me of Jelavic when we were looking at him.
I fancy he is going to come to the fore in the second half of this Season myself now he has a bit of self confidence and belief.
Secondly Commons proved yet again why it is Johansen is better in the no10 slot.
Pish first touch
Lossess possession too easily
Seldom track back to retain the ball
Is bone idle unless he’s sprinting towards the box and a possible goal.
The 2 youngsters who came on did very well,showed some hunger and weren’t phased at all.
Lastly we scored 3 away goals and could possibly had 5 with better finishing and a slice of luck.

We need our Board to back the Manager if they do not do it this time we are only going to regress in Europe further whilst Ronny’s job becomes even harder than it already is.

Patience is and always has been the key here.
Try it you never know you might actually enjoy the odd game.
