Celtic Diary Saturday October 25: Ch Ch Changes

After accusations that they turned up to simply go through the motions on Thursday, a bit like my mate who is a stool sample sorter at the hospital, Celtics players and management will be determined to put on a show tomorrow when Kilmarnock roll into town.

Won’t they ?

One of the more distressing  comments from Ronny Deila post match was that he went to two up front when he was worried , and after Stefan Scepovic finally scored, he immediately reverted back to one.  Seeing as how he has now worked out how to get his players to score, its alarming that he only does it when he feels he has no other option. It defies logic and doesn’t help his case when he tells the fans he knows what he’s doing.

For those who were at the game, when they could have been doing something more entertaining , such as watching a Miranda Hart box set , there is a feeling Deila owes them a performance. The players certainly need to show us what they can do, so if I could humbly suggest that they all get together over lunch and come up with a plan that suits everyone.

Obviously Celtic need to beat Kilmarnock, but to make everyone feel better, we need to beat them with a flourish.

Craig Gordon will start in goal. Then, lets freshen things up at the back. Keep Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguerre as full backs, but chuck Charlie Mulgrew and Efe Ambrose  in at centre half. Virgil van Dijk loooks as though he doesn’t want to be here, and Jason Denaayer has publicly stated he isn’t hanging around either once his loan spell is up, which frankly means whoever hired him needs a boot in the haw maws.

Bringing in a loanee and neglecting those who have remained loyal or need game time is out of order, unless the player wants a deal at the end of his tenure.

That should give van Dijk, who is already listed as an incoming amount in the January sales a short sharp shock, and whilst some would argue it may see his value drop, so what ? Its not like we’d spend it on a replacement anyway. As far as I’m concerned , a desire to wear the hoops outweighs anything else a player brings to the table.

In the middle, Scott Brown is a given, with Stefan Johansen alongside him. But lets give Nir Bitton a berth in front of the defence. That will give the usual two a chance to draw breath in between impersonating a dog chasing a bin bag on the beach.

That leaves a spot for Kris Commons if his bottom is better, or a free role for Calum McGregor-or even Wakaso Mubarak, who may well take to a roaming remit. He’s got the pace, the goal threat and maybe an eye for a pass that isn’t straight down the line. worth a shot anyway.

Then the radical change up front. Stefan Scepovic has an excellent sense of positioning and awareness. He’s just maybe a fraction of a second behind the play at this stage, and needs games. Put him up front with a loanee who is clearly having the time of his life at Celtic, John Guidetti, and whilst its not Sutton and Larsson, ot yet, anyway, its certainly not Stokes, and well, anyone.

I’m at the game tomorrow, and would like to enjoy the period between the long haul north and then back south. It would make a refreshing change. I can’t remember the last time I thoroughly enjoyed a match, but I do remember the strip didn’t have writing on the front

. Put the Astra game behind us now. Its gone. we can’t change the performance, and we don’t need to change the result.

But we do need to change the sense of nervousness among the support that Deila is struggling to find a way to get the best out of his charges, and instead sticking to the only system he knows, the management equivalent of holding his breath until he dies.

Theres been a few Celts in the media having a pop at Ronny, which is what they are paid to do, and Chris Sutton has joined the likes of John Hartson , Andy Walker, Davie Provan and , to a lesser extent, Charlie Nicholas in swinging a hammer at the manager.

hypocrisy meter

( We’ve had a new one fitted. I wore the last one out. )

I’ll excuse Nicholas, he actually cares about the club, and isn’t intelligent to have an agenda, but the rest have no excuse.

Sutton and Hartson were treated fairly badly when the O’Neill side was finally broken up, but they were both past their best, to put it kindly. Both were fantastic players who could have walked into most top sides at their peak, and we are eternally grateful for their time in the hoops.

But the sepia toned eye has a way of a way of clouding the memory. both were also very well rewarded for their spells in Glasgow, and its not our bloody fault they’ve spent it.

Criticism should be heard, but it should be fair and honest. Whilst Sutton was essentially an honest player, and after reading his autobiography, you feel he’s essentially an honest guy, maybe sometimes he should think before he speaks. He’s not wrong in what he said during the Astra game, but you got the feeling had someone else been the manager, and not the Ronster, then Sutton wouldn’t have been quite so vitriolic.

( Note; The Diary  speaks its mind without,  a) being paid for it b) saying things for the sake of saying it and c) without the benefit of actually having a fully functioning working model working  away between its ears.. )

So , Ronny if you are reading this ( aye, okay, of course he is..) this is for your eyes only…

Se, vi vet at dypt nede er det en anstendig trener i deg et sted. Slapp av, og la spillerne spille, du kan trene , og vi kan støtte .

Right, whilst Celtic have one or two minor things to sort out, which are not beyond those in the position of being able to sort it, it appears that Scotlands newest club , with its inexperienced boardroom and rookie manager, have hit the same problems as the very club they bought the ground and other facilities from in a liquidation fire sale just two years ago.

While everyone in Scottish football wanted to see them do well, life in Camerons britain is tough for any new business, and £70m or so just doesn’t appear to cover the bills on their climb to the top, with several unforeseen expenses draining the bank account, such as directors wages, directors bonuses and directors expenses.

Even though they managed to find an experienced top level manager in Ally McCoist at a fraction of the salary he would be able to command anywhere else , even his guile, reputation and ability hasn’t been able to get them to the Champions league glory they have targeted as quickly as they wanted.

Players such as Lee McCulloch , Ian Black and Campbell Bell forsook the riches of the English and Spanish leagues to hitch their horses to the storybook dream of being a part of the clubs dream to win every league they competed in from the day they were born until the day they die

With thousands of supporters hooked by the idea of being a part of something new, something fresh and invigorating, clear to write its own exciting new chapter in the history of the worlds greatest game, the future looked rosy for the fledgling entity, but when financial whizz kid Charles Green called it a day, their was no-one with his unique business talents to continue the drive forward.

Sadly, the club finds itself in dire need of financial assistance, and they could yet be the only club never to have faced Celtic at senior level.

But, help is at hand… there are several businessmen ready to offer emergency funding, genuine people who want to help preserve the dream.

Brian Kennedy, owner of the unfortunately named Sale Sharks, Mike Ashley, billionaire owner of Newcastle United and the Sports Direct chainstore.

Dave King, who is ready to use all his experience and knowledge gained from his previous stint at a Scottish club.

Help is out there. They are ready to listen.

Me ? I’ll be sorry to see them go. Which is at least consistent.

I was sorry to see them appear in the first place.

Yesterdays picture featured the final days of the old Jungle, heralding the arrival of the new North Stand.

Its still hard to comprehend the size of the old place when compared to the new stand.

How did we all fit in ?

That was a picture of the past. today, we have a picture of the future….

Bisto that portrait i drew of you was a turd, you clearly have a problem with Female Celtic supporters. Maybe Ronnie done over lennon, it would explain all flak he’s getting from former players. I think it’s time to set up a vote for former Celt’s that no longer have a voice.

I agree,Ralph,Celtic fans in Celtic jerrsey’s ? Too romantic ?
No,it’s not impossible. For example,we were after Lee Tomlin,
he was desperate to play in the Hoops.Lawwell pissed off his then club Peterborough, with a derisory offer. He went to Middlesborough, and he makes them tick.
We should not be a feeder club for Man.City.Recently RD said, ” City have many young players, that need developed ?? WTF.
In fairness to him,is this the route Lawwell is telling him to go down ?
There are many good players out their, with Celtic in their hearts,we should bring these players in,to play for the cause !!

ralph, sorry to start on a negative, but I cannot agree with your analysis of a loan deal. They are used for two reason, the first I kind of agree with you. They are brought in to try to win a deal with the loan club or it allows the loan club to try first buy later. The second is to give the loan player a chance to advance their experience of first team football whilst the loan club get a player that would be otherwise outwith it’s transfer budget and wage structure. Denyar is firmly in the latter camp, always was, he talked about playing beside his hero (Kompany)when he arrived at Celtic. Is he advancing his own agenda? of course he is. Do we condemn him for doing so, IMHO no, we should take advantage of the chance of having one of the best young centre halfs in Europe playing for us at a discount price.

I have a theory about former Celtic players who become Pundits and Critics it goes like this..
Those who are regarded as excellent former players or gained Legendary status for their play are seldom less than polite whether we play good or bad you get the the truth but in a constructive way.
Murdo,Charlie Nicholas,Dalglish,Rambo for example.
Those players who for whatever ever reason never reached their full potential,Never got the call to come and play or played a Supporting role rather than the lead tend to be over critical I think and non constructive in their criticism or snide in their positive..
Provan,Sutton,Nevin and Andy Walker for example.
Whilst Andy Walkers first spell was fairly successful his second was far from it and I think it sticks in his craw myself.
Whilst Provan and Sutton were decent on and off I don’t regard any of them as outstanding and therein lies the problem these guys know Celtic fans have moved on from their days.

Just a theory and when I listen to any of them I can here the difference in their approach to what they are seeing.

Theories aside …
I agree about the Denayer stuff if he’s not performing well then bring Efe back into the mix and as for Virgil I think he has it in his head he’s already a World Class Defender and way too good to be wasting his time in Scotland.
Dutch player in general can be arrogant bastards he’s no exception I don’t think.
Thing is with Virgil he’s been found out a bit in Europe where the forwards tend to think that bit sharper and move that bit sooner than expected.
Unless Arsenhole cum up with less than 10 big ones (see what I did there) then keep him till July then punt to the very highest bidder.
I still don’t get the fuss about Kris Commons myself other than his goals and the odd nice through ball (both have dried up this season btw) he offers little else as an Attacking Midfielder as far as I can see.
First touch is generally poor and he loses possession alot due to this.
He’s slow and does little tracking back or helping out when we have to defend..which in Europe is a luxury we simply cannot afford

Charlie Saiz

…now.
As for this obsession with playing 2 up front?
In Europe we field 4 Attacking players who can all the score goals why the need to have 2 strikers milling about doing fuck all for long periods?
Keep one up top and the supporting cast can get involved more in midfield thus creating more chance of a break.

Sorry, I must have got out the wrong side of bed this morning, I am disagreeing with everyone. Charlie Saiz, Sutton was more than just decent. His goals, particularly in europe, were fantastic and many. Henrik and that tosser shearer would not have been as successful without Suttons interplay and assists, and what about the times he was asked to play centre half. Maybe we should consider this when reading Suttons comments, maybe he is a Celtic man like the rest of us, maybe he is sick of watching the shite that we do every week, maybe he actually gives a shite about the club that gave him the best years of his career. What he has that we enviously don’t is a platform on which to put over his views and influence the agenda on what a Celtic manager should be. Sorry again to be a grumpy b######d this morning, and before you make assumptions, I was sober last night, ahhhh problem solved

Perhaps Chris Sutton is appalled at how far the standard of Celtic player has fallen since he was surrouded by Henrik’s, Lubos, Lennons and Lamberts. Not to menntion Petrovs and Mjalbys.

Oh I have Andy and did a rather indepth post on it on another Forum.
Lawwells wages has multiplied by 5 times since he started 10 years ago.
His Bonus has also risen by 10 times it’s original amount in the same time frame.
Amazing when you consider the Club made less money in his last year than it did in his first.
Proving beyond any shadow of doubt his Bonus is not connected to Either Turnover or Profit on the year:

In 2004 Celtic Football Club had a turnover of £69m
With running costs of £64m
It turned a profit of £4.3m

PL’s Salary was £102,844
Bonus was £38,582
Total Wage plus Benefits and Pension £165,961

in 2014 our turnover was £64m
Running costs of £59.8m
Turning a profit of £4.175m
PL’s Salary was £524,576
Bonus was £400,500
Total Wage plus Benefits and Pension £999,496

Player sales is the Link here the more we make in the Transfer Window the bigger Pete’s Bonus is.

Really loved big Sutton as a player but as a pundit I’m losing respect for the man every time he opens his mouth. I would love to see a return to the days when the Celtic team is full of guys with a genuine love of the club who would run through brick walls to get a result, sadly in this day and age I’m just not sure that’s possible. Hail x2

Drop VWD he thinks he;s good not on the last few apperances he looks slow & cumbersome. Denayor is young & erratic he is only here for the year & is a Man City player so he is bound to say I wont be here next year.
Tomorrow’s match we will be slow lethargic and uninspiring with Guidetti & Johanson the only ones busting a gut.
My theory is the players are training so hard they are knackered & can only manage 1 game per week.
Will be proved wrong tomorrow when we are blitz Killie 5-0 with a top of the range performance.

That aside, just wish to bring up the issue regarding big Chris. Lets face the facts, what he said about Thursday was spot on, we were crap. He and Hartson are only to pundits who after having played with the team they both say were the greatest years in their career, unlike some or even most of the others, try to bring us down, they stand up for the club that they and us love.

In fairness to Denayer , he was always going back to Man City.
I don’t think a permanent deal was ever on the cards , from City’s point of view . Whatever we think of him , they rate him as one for their future . Belgium view him equally highly .
His market value will be not far behind Van Dijk’s; so we could never afford him .
Guidetti however , is a different matter . He will be available.
I can see the arguement against loanee’s , for me it comes down to the quality of the loanee. Wakaso and Tonev , hmmm, I’m not so sure of.
But there can be a case for occasionally using this strategy.
We are a proud Club, and rightly so , but we would be foolish to let our pride blind us to where we are , financial muscle-wise , in world football.
If a relationship is being developed with Man City, whereas we give high level of football to some of their young or fringe players , and we in return get access (even temporarily) to some talent that we ordinarily could never afford , then we shouldn’t be too proud to use this.
Another bonus is the occasional “Guidetti” situation , where we get a player in whose contract is running down , get the chance to “sell” Celtic to him while he’s here , and due to this have a much better chance of signing him .
But I agree , it has to be a limited number , so as to keep intensity in the team.
Could be that Van Dijk (wanting away) and Denayer (temp loan) playing alongside each other is affecting that intensity in a key area .

Is that what it is coming to, comparing ourselves to TFOD.
I for one hope that they die sooner rather than later, then the Celtic board and useless manager will have nothing to hide behind.

Charlie Saiz – no response from Thursday’s shit performance, why not! RD has no clue and Sutton is right, that team looked as if they had never met each other against astra, we are going backwards. I wont be back until RD is bagged, its a disgrace the shit we are watching. Slagging Commons off shows you know Feck all about a good player.

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  Franco Baresi

Commons is a good player but he has some very poor traits that can affect our side in big games ie Europe.
In Europe we need players who will chase mwn down.harry defenders and track back if need be?
Stokes for example does this week in week out and yet you barely hear him get a mention unless he scores?
I ask myself why that is ..the answer is simple the guy scoring the goals at Celtic is alway’s beyond reproach by the many.
Not me I like to look at a players overall performance and take it from there.
Commons sadly lacks in certain areas and I think Deila is demanding more from the guy in his No10 position than the previous Manager did myself.
We won on Thursday, we played poor first half and better second though still way off the level we know these players can reach?
Yet we won, created 20 chances and dominated possession for 63% of the game.
How many glorious nights of failure have we had in Europe when we had the bulk of the ball ,played really well and then left with absolutely fuck all points on the board at the end?
Answer = Too many.

Every cloud as they say …and we can only get better.

Damian Smyth

something seriously wrong on Thursday night . When on defence we couldn’t get the ball cleared to a team mate . They seem to get two/three or even four attacks before we could get relieve . Whose idea is it for either centre back to stroll up with the ball through midfield . Once or twice a game might work , not doing it all the time .

timbuffy

Sutton said that RD was talking crap when he claimed we were “making progress” after getting gubbed by Hamilton. The big man was absolutely spot on and, as someone who has been watching Celtic since the early 1950s, I also agree with Sutton’s claim that we were “pathetic” against Astra. Seven points from three games in Europe looks great but the blunt truth is that if it hadn’t been for Craig Gordon we would have had hee haw. As I’ve said here before, we’re going backwards at an alarming rate.

great diary, really funny especially the bit about chucking efe back into defence, very funny

Thewildgoose

See all this, if it wasn’t for Gordon blah blagh blagh, ffs that is what he’s there for to make saves. Every great team has a great keeper. Big efe is a strange one, at times last season i thought he was playing very well and he was part of a side that broke alsorts of defensive records, its clear to me that he’s not a right back and never will be but i think he can still do a job for us at cb. I realize im in the minority on that one. Commons i think due to an exeptionally good season is over rated, not saying he’s a bad player far from it but his lack of pace means he will never be a great player. I think im in the minority there too which means i must talk utter pish.

Thewildgoose makes some good points. If big Efi is good enough to play at the World Cup finals surely he he is good enough to play in our current Celtic team. Unfortunately all of our Scottish players, perhaps Gordon apart, get found out up against European oppostion – sad fact. Although fortunately more than good enough for the Scottish League.

Deilas had 3 month,a list of injuries that would have affected Lenny’s preparations and key players under performing game after game?

What were you expecting at this point 5-0 wins every week and battering sides across Europe?
