Celtic Diary Monday September 29: Even Keith Jackson Can See It.

The Diary has been accused of being somewhat fickle at times, largely because it is, but even the author is beginning to question his sanity this morning, when he found he agreed with an article written by Keith Jackson of the Daily Record, presumably after his head was cleared of previous thoughts by the method illustrated above.

Theres a first time for everything, I suppose. And no, the bold Keith didn’t write about bears utilising large areas of forestry in order to evacuate their bowels. In fact, it was something even more obvious.

 Celtic boss Ronny Deila makes

managing a team look hard just

like Ryder cup flop Tom Watson

Alright, perhaps the headline could have been phrased better, I’ve no idea or desire to find out exactly how hard Tom Watson is, and even less desire to watch golf. After all, if someone hits a wee ball as hard as he can and then trudges off after it, there is obviously a loose wire somewhere in his circuitry. In cricket, they make someone else fetch it, which seems a much better idea.

In the article , Jackson says;

Ronny Deila didn’t arrive here with much of a reputation to lose. For the most part the Norwegian was unheralded and, yes, even unheard of. His work at Stromsgodset may have made big news in Gulskogen but it hadn’t travelled as far as Glasgow which is why Deila was up against it from the outset.

He has an army of doubters to win over and quite frankly, the more the fans see of Deila’s work the less there is to convince them.

Yes, a victory was cobbled together at St Mirren but this was another strikingly sub-par performance from Deila’s side.

In fact, his team is becoming unrecognisable from the all-conquering unit left to him by Neil Lennon and, for that, Deila has some explaining to do.

The more he tinkers the less impressive the team becomes and, more alarmingly, there are now mutterings of discontent from behind the scenes at Lennoxtown where Deila’s ultra-modern methods appear to be causing some confusion.

The 38-year-old is full of ideas but precious few of them appear to be working for his players who remain unconvinced as to how a portion of rice with their Saturday night Chinese takeaway is going to make them perform more poorly on Thursday night when Celtic take on Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

All carbs and sugars have been banned by Deila who is in danger of coming across as a bit of a textbook fanatic, exactly the way Paul Le Guen did at Ibrox not so very long ago.

Of course, its nothing that many of us haven’t already concluded, but if even Keith Jackson can see it, then Deilas days are already numbered. Not because the hack holds any sort of influence at Celtic Park, but because if he can see it, then those who hire and fire at Celtic Park will have already been whispering about it.

It’s as if Deila is determined to make management look like some sort of science but he is not being asked to split the atom here. He is merely being tasked with keeping Celtic ticking over as the strongest team in Scotland and right now he’s falling a long way short.

Which, in fairness to Keith is exactly what most of us have been thinking, and questions now have to be asked of the manager, questions such as

” What the fuck are you playing at ? “

In the main, what Ronny and Jonny appear to be doing is improving -or trying to improve-the players eating, sleeping and drinking habits. There is nothing wrong with that in principle. In fact, done correctly, it could well improve their performances. A previous manager, Gordon Strachan , arguably got exceptional performances from largely ordinary players by improving their fitness, citing the adage that “tired minds make tired decisions, ” and the concentration of his players, especially in Europe, was astonishing, more than once performing above their weight.

So, on balance, improving their fitness is a good idea, but theres a reason as to why when we join a gym, alright, when you join a gym, ( you wouldn’t catch me anywhere near one,   I have my own rigid fitness regime, up one two and then the other sock )  you have a personal trainer, someone who regulates your fitness programme to your needs and physique.

Actually, when I did once venture into a gym, I put my finger through a hole in my trainer and had to sign on a register for a couple of years.

Anyone with a bit of common sense-no pun intended-can surely see that the likes of Kris Commons should be on a different diet and exercise routine than say, Eoghan O’ Connell.

A blanket ban on carbs and sugar, to quote Jacksons article again, if true, is ridiculous. Its like someone gave Deila the Ladybird Book of Things that Are Bad For You If Taken in Excess, and he’s using it as his starting point to create an all running , all passing superfootballer, when in fact, he’s created some six foot headless chickens, who probably sneak downstairs at midnight, open a packet of fruit gums, and eat them behind the garden shed.

Although the Norwegian has probably banned garden sheds as well, in case anyone nips out for a fag during the ads on Coronation Street.

Deila still has time to change things, to adopt a wee bit more maturity, and dare I say, improve his people skills before he becomes the unicorn who stood on the beach, watching a big boat disappear over the horizon, and saying to his pal

” Oh, bollocks, was that today ? “

Perhaps there was some evidence in these words from the boss that he really is lowering expectations…

“We stuck together as a team in 90 minutes to win the game,” said Deila.

“The game was brought back to 1-1 and that was difficult to come back again.

“But we did it, we kept them away from our goal for the last 20 minutes, and that was positive.”

Keeping a side who have won one game this season away from your goal is not really a positive worth shouting about.

 Meanwhile, Police in Paisley are probng allegations of racial abuse towards Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk. A statement read;

“Police Scotland has received a complaint from a Celtic player alleging he was racially abused by a spectator during the St Mirren v Celtic match on Saturday.

“Police are liaising with both clubs and are analysing broadcast and CCTV footage. Inquiries are ongoing.”

They are also looking to question a man in connection with repeatedly assaulting anyone who came near him on Saturday lunchtime, and have issued a photofit.

Jim Goodwin

Meanwhile, the virtues of playing two up front were evident for Brodby, over in the Danish Superleague, even if those two were Teemu Pukki and Holmbert Fridjonsson…courtesy of VideoCelts

Fridjonsson and Pukki goals..

Dinamo Zagreb are the next team for Ronny to worry about. They are here on Thursday, and its probably going to be a little different from St. Mirren.

The official website is optimistic;

DINAMO Zagreb visit Celtic Park this Thursday in Matchday Two of the UEFA Europa League. The Croatian champions got off to a winning start in the group stages with a thumping 5-1 win over Romanians FC Astra.

They’re currently top of the table in Croatia despite a 0-0 draw with bottom side Slaven Belupo on Saturday, and they’re guaranteed to provide a tough test for Ronny Deila’s men.

Ronny Deila will be hoping that Thursday night is the first of an extended run in the Europa League, and the team will have been boosted by their 2-2 draw against Austrian champions FC Salzburg two weeks ago. They also know that a win on Thursday could take the Hoops top of the group.

Make sure you’re there to cheer the Bhoys in Europe by securing your seat today.

I have;

behind the couch

Actually, I’m considering this one. Its unfortunate that it coincides with my wedding anniversary tomorrow which means if I don’t come up with something special for that, then theres no chance I’ll be allowed out to play on Thursday, and to be honest I’m stumped.

She didn’t appreciate the cheese grater last year, and I’m completely out of ideas for this year.

It does make me think of the wedding though, and how she wanted to call it all off as my drinking at the time had got out of control, and she was having difficulty in coping with it.

But she didn’t, and we just went to the reception with everyone else.

Booby Lennox was the victim of a John Greig tackle in yetserdays picture, provided via twitter by St. Anthony, and its to him we turn again for todays picture,

One of the players is instantly recognisable, so the question is, who is the fellow behind Jimmy Johnstone.

( Notice I resisted the obvious punchline there… )

Unrelated to the article but might be of interest to some. Borreigter and agent were on the same flight as me to London this morning.

It looked like they were off for talks somewhere to me but could have just been going to madam tussards. I tried to ear wig in and thought I heard them talking about Bristol.

Where ever he is off to its another waste of a few million anyway.

I’m not convinced about Deila yet, however, I can’t recall the last time our players have run the opposition off the park.
Every European team’s players appear to be much fitter / more athletic than our players – why is this?
I’ve always thought that Commons was carrying extra weight and never looked fully fit. I know he’s been a great player for us, but if he was fitter, would he be even better?
We’re talking about professional players here. They should be doing everything in they possibly can to get an edge on the opposition and if that means looking after themselves a bit more, then so be it. I’m surprised that anyone should be questioning professional sportsman being taken to task for their eating habits / fitness.
I was watching goals on sunday yesterday and Ray Parlour was talking about how players today don’t seem to know everything about the opposition in the EPL. He insisted in his day it was mandatory to know the opposition players in order to get an edge during the game. Every little bit helps and fitness is one of those things that could give us the edge.
I’ll keep my opinions on Deila until xmas at least.
We’ll know by then if he is a Mowbray or a Stein, but until then, he deserves to be given a chance to get his methods through to the players.

Yes,Ralph, you’ve let yourself down, bringing Keek blueboy Jackson, to support your argument against the failings of Deila. The Lying King has him in his back pocket.
His agenda is shown in this article, “…perform more poorly on Thursday “.This is what he is wishing for.The majority of Celtic fans go nowhere near the daily dump.
So,no more aberations,Ralph, with regards to using this rag as a source.

I am worried that if we give Delia the benefit of the doubt, then by the end of the season he may have completely ruined the team and whoever takes over will have to start from rock bottom.

Okay, now that I have finally stopped laughing, lets begin

If Keith Jackson is your Exhibit A I know you’re struggling. I lost count of the number of direct quotes he used in that article.

Hearsay..only good for Kim and Myleenes arses and wee Suzannes dodgy video in the motorway toilets!

So far I’ve seen abuse of the manager for playing so many players. No one seems to mind the injuries or the late late signings of players who werent match fit when they arrived. Oh the promotion of youth…shame on the manager, how very dare he play the weans and not play folk like Biton ( the latest “Reputation improves purely by being on the bench” candidate) and Kayal who now get lauded yet were being chased of the wage-bill by same people not so long ago.

Can all the naysayers wait and see a fully fit Celtic squad given a full month under Deila…sadly i doubt it but surely anybody deserves that short period to justify his methods. You never seem to ask if hes being forced to make all these changes as players are actually injured or just not up to the task needed.

I actually came up with a new thought over weekend, this isnt Tony Mowbray II, this is looking like being John Barnes II. Im sure you will all be happy to see Ronnie chased down the road eventually before saying “Oh look the new guy can play Stokes and Griffiths and bore us all silly like we all love cause really we’re just all masochist stuck in the muds who fear change”

Finally, i know you all love Leigh Griffiths and he might know how to score in SPL but lets look at the long list of quality folk queuing up to take him on loan…..that will be Hibs then..maybe the problem isnt all Ronnies?, ask yourself, why would Stokes get in before Griffiths?…self inflicted petted lip injury anyone? No, silly me, of course it isnt, its all that bad man and his daft ideas.

Delia is just a part of pirate pete,s downsizing, bring in the cheapest option he can find,he played the same game and got away with it when he appointed a novice in Lennon, wonder what would have happened if the cheats had not went bust,Delia has to go but Lawwell will not be wanting to admit he got it wrong , and who knows what sort of second or third rate manager he would bring in,this state of affairs will not
stop till he goes and the major shareholder sells to someone who genuinely gives a toss about celtic

Good to see a fellow Tim not afraid to make honest and just criticisms of the club and have a laugh at Celtic and themselves.
Humour has been in short supply in Scotlands football and socio-political circles.

My tuppence worth, Deila is out of his depth managing Glasgow Celtic. Despite the barren footballing landscape and the financial plight and disorganised runnings of our SPL (is it still called that?) rivals, Rugged Ronny and John “look at ma abs” Collins are making a fucking arse of this season.
Praising a side for beating a lower league team at home and narrowly winning at the 11th best team in Scotland sums up how utterly clueless them 2 are.
Still, I find it best to laugh it off, I mean when your team’s been dumped out of Europe twice and can’t beat the might of Inverness, Dundee and Motherwell then humour is the best policy.

As for Keith Jackson, Deila’s failings are obvious so even a dullard such as him would’ve hit the nail on the head at some point. He’s probably earned himself an extra 43,000 shares in Sevco for that article, or 28 pence to be exact.

I have no problem with Delia trying to improve our players through fitness or otherwise but he does sound like an unpleasant headmaster with his zero tolerance approach.
On the pitch I just find the current approach really dull. Even when we do win it’s boring to watch and that is turning fans off. We’ll always have a faithful core support but we are in danger of having nothing else the way things are going.
Last game we had with a decent amount of shots on target was Motherwell and we couldn’t even beat them at home although Hamilton managed to hammer them the other night.
I’m worried (and bored) I really am.

elcormaco

I called this as more similar to Barnes than Mowbray some time ago – a hipster manager locked into his formation and his training / diet ideas, sticking doggedly to them when the evidence in front of your eyes tells you he’s on the wrong tracks, but having invested everything in this vision he is too stubborn to change and ends up paying with his job

Time will tell of course, but this fitness thing. Of course players should seek to maximise their abilities, but I just don’t buy we were unfit last year – we got run ragged in European games because we are technically not very good and can’t keep the ball, so have to chase after it for long spells. In Scotland it’s different, we dominate the possession, and whether you have a can of pop or sugar in your tea I don’t believe it makes a tangible difference to a player’s ability to perform. Usain Bolt is a fit lad, but is a runner not a footballer because he can’t do football things like trap a ball or shoot. Leigh Griffiths is probably partial to a bottle of fizzy drink and a bag of crisps but can score goals. Who do you want playing in your team?

Of course some one like Commons needs to watch his weight, and in his second season he was rubbish, because by his own admission he wasn’t in shape. Last season, good condition, and thirty something goals. Can we expect 40 goals this season as he is worked even harder or breakdowns for muscle injuries, because he is worked too hard? His form hasn’t been great and he is out with a torn muscle in his arse at the minute, so it’s starting to look more like the latter.

Others have said he has not had a full squad etc etc, which is true, but playing Berget away in CL qualifier when he had only signed the day before? Other players could have played in his place that night, and judging by the fact he is now out of the team probably should have, and some players aren’t getting a fair chance – Boerrigiter I think has actually looked good in his twenty minutes he’s been given this season, Griffiths deserves a game or two, as does Biton, but he seems blind to their abilities while space wasters like Berget get a decent chance and Mc Gregor keeps playing despite looking tired out.

I tuned into about five minutes of Saturday’s game, saw how shite we were – again- and turned over to the golf. I think this is another risk – he is driving fans away and losing our respect by his statements and the dross the team are playing.

On the plus side Guidetti looks decent and committed at least and that’s three unbeaten now, but I really think the manger needs to compromise a little – and soon – other wise the players will down tools entirely and force him out.

And yeah, don’t know who the guy in the photo is but he has done well to even be a sub for Celtic given he only has the one leg.

I completely understand the point of the article, Leeds headline also makes sence.
There are problems on field , but all the talk of the once great Celtic teams striking fear into opposition are as near the target as a kayal shot.
If Ronnie is the worst manager then time is needed to identify that fact , more glaring facts are we have many over paid underperforming

Actually, I have regularly seen similarities between the diary and the gutter press. Why you are still taking any notice of that particular publication is beyond me, I though all sensible Celtic supporters had ditched it long-ago.

Players , who struggle to beat opposition below there level , our club has been doing this for a long ‘re . Not Ronnie failure that.
We have more capped players than ever before in our squad , a lot not up to the job.
Finally our support is pathetic, rather criticise than get behind , no volume, no backup that’s what makes us great , or ordinary

jpm 88

Deila can’t be blamed for the shocking Izzy pass back that almost cost a goal in the Hearts game, nor for Brown carelessly giving the ball away on the half-way line in the same game , resulting in their penalty; nor indeed for the Gordon throw straight to St Mirren player which resulted in their equalizer on Sat.
I lost count of the number of “basic” passes that went directly to an opposition player on Sat. I think some of our players are “having a laugh” here , maybe trying it on cause they don’t fancy the new coach ( he’s a coach , not a manager) or his methods.
If that’s true , they need a kick up the arse. It’s not their place to “pick” who runs the team.
They’re not just selling him short – they’re also selling the fans short.
I get the querying of his style and tactics, ( though Sept is a bit early to judge), but dreadful passing is nothing to do with these things.A 5 yrd pass to a team-mate should be a “given”, a footballing basic.

Kris Commons is at the heart of this argument. Even fully fit and on top form he has struggled in our CL games. His first and second touch, like others always has been and is woefully inept at that level. If these players cannot cope with that basic demand is there really any point persisting with them. If you want to be consistently successful at that level then that’s what you have to breed and imbed. If we really want to be a Continental club then the mindset has to change altogether. The bevvy has to go, the bad eating and sleeping habits too. This is a minimum requirement. It’s not enough just to be a good footballer anymore. You need to be an athlete with awareness. This is the Coal face. Either dig it or get tae fuck!

Another wee MANAGER quiz question:

Just reading about a MANAGER in his first season at a big name/spending club in EPL. MANAGER got hired after lots of plaudits for last season when he was at another highly praised EPL team who actually struggled at first to understand his new tactics and desired style of football.

Turns out he only won 1 game in his first 8.

Q: Which MANAGER?
A: Mauricio Pochettino!

Will say this about the man, unlike Strachan and Lennon, who always told us how brilliant the team was after getting a win, but playing crap,at leastr he is honest enough to say it is not good enough and he expects better. Would rather have honesty than having the wool pulled over the eyes.

The jury are still out on the man, but all the evidence has still to come.

Deila has been compared to Tony Mowbray, John Barnes, and even Big Jock. I fear the closest comparison might be Paul La Guen. Scottish football reflects Scottish culture: obesity, worst teeth in the world, worst diet in the world, too much smoking and drinking and so on. We’re all part of it. I feel sorry for the guy but we’ll know in a short time if he stays or goes. 3 or 4 games should do it.
If he can improve/rebuild our team and still win the league by 20 points then count me in for Team Deila but …

Des,
At least he can call himself a Manager.Brings his own players in,and will live or die by decisions,on where he plays these players. We have 2 fitness Coaches,by all accounts,do not scout players or SIGN players. When they get these new players,to supplement the Scottish Champions,in case anybody forgot, they are played out of position.Wakaso, good left winger, played on right,on Saturday.McGregor plays, regardless of form. And our biggest bug bare, not playing 2 up front,as the manual tells him, this new age football philosophy, requires only 1 striker.Pundits,on Match of the Day,last night, observed more teams are reverting to 2 up front. And are having success with it.
So,does Deila need to go on another coaches course, to update his skills ?
Evidence suggests, engaging 2 centre backs, with 2 strikers, creates more chances, when pressure is applied,in the final third.
Will the bold Ronny, ever be as bold,as giving us a 2 pronged attack ?

2 up front…isnt that what we play when Commons is fit, shame he had a pain in his ass at the weekend though so a rejig was needed.

McGregor isnt so much knacked, he was coming on well at the end of Saturdays game, more he just needs confidence managed like any youngster would to stop him drifting out of games, Im sure folk said the same about a younger James Forrest back in his fit days.

Im no saying Ronnie is the Messiah, all I ask is give the guy a break and see what he can do when everyone fit ( You think he wants to play Efe at Right Back and have no other experienced central halves?) and actually has decent options and who knows, maybe a Jan window where he can have some input into signings.

And anyone who thinks a new manager would be some super strong Force of Nature personality and call all the shots player signing wise, why not go ask Roy Keane how that part of his Celtic interview went?

Desi,
I agree, and I am sure every Celtic fan,is of the same mind,he will get time.We all want him to be a success. However, healthy debate,on the here and now, does not fill us with any confidence, that progress is being made.Your opinion,is more akin to blind faith. That it will be alright on the night, and there is nothing to worry about ?
Where,is your evidence, that there are promising signs ?
Maribor, was a disaster, that any half-decent coach, especially after the hard part was done, would have got us safely through. For me,alarm bells started ringing from that night. To persist from day 1,with a 5-2-3-1 system, when it’s clear to every fan watching, that we didn’t have the 1,was naive to say the least.
Having used 28 players,is also very worrying.
So,Desi,I admire your optimism, that Deila is the man to take us forward. You have not substanciated this, with any proof,it just seems to be a hunch,on your part. Cheers.

Proof? ( hat doff to Colonel Jessop), fair point. Dundee United game?

Im not one for blind faith but just feel ( you just sighed there didnt you?) that you cant judge the guy until he has all the tools at his disposal and able to do his own thing freely.

It seems in the eyes of some fans, the Celtic squad has went from a slow meandering dullard to Brazil 1970 accoridng to some plaudits. I dont think Lenny left any new guy a decent squad and with a combination of Exits, Workd Cup and Injuries, Ronnie was always going to struggle and got no backing from the Board whatsoever.

People say How can he play Berget the day he signs him, maybe they should be asking “Why does he need to feel he has to play Berget?”.

I see a squad low on quality and that is not the managers fault. He is trying to raise the bar overall, not just one game at a time and in that I see a progressive mindset. People talk about players looking knackered, yes, because they are being asked to raise their game in a different way from normal, a new way that could work all the time rather than roller coaster SPL/Europe under Lenny last year.

I can see how some think its doomed but I also dont think its blind faith to get behind a man who says he has a long term plan. The key being the 2 words long and term, not 10 games, more like 100.

Desi,
Maybe,I have been too harsh. The failure against Maribor, with no CL nights, possibly is clouding my judgement. But,the facts are, there does not seem to be any improvements, from day one.
A long term plan ? This is all well and good. There is a man over at Ibrokes, who bought himself time with a 126 day review. It turned out to be bullshit.
My fear is Deila sold himself to the board with his ‘ master plan ‘.
Just in the door,he was talking about, not just beating Bayern and Barca, but dominating them, with power play ?
Bullshit or what ?
Rather harsh on Lenny, qualified twice through CL qualifiers. The last 16,and Barcelona win, should not be forgotten,as it wasn’t last season. He wanted investment in quality, but was told where to go.
Therefore,Desi,is Deila a dreamer,bullshitter or a visionary who can take on Europe’s finest,and beat convincingly ?

Couldn’t have been Steve Murray,i was playing golf with him today he would have mentioned it,oh that Stevie Murray!

Not any happier with Celtic’s performance that most, the diet thing makes sense, if that was the only thing i would not have a problem.I just don;t see a system there, against Dundee United (top of the table) great since then very little.
This is a big week for Ronnie two wins on Thursday and Sunday and i will be relatively happy. by and large too soon to know, some folk wanted Wim sacked when we had a poor performance against Dunfermine in August, a few weeks after he joined us.We probably kept Mowbray too long though in theory he was a good appointment but just wrong,in the end, for us.Maybe be clearer sunday night.

The facts. Celtic are a second level Eiropean team. How do you get to the next level? Money? We don’t have enough to entertain that. Other methods? Build a club from top to bottom to produce ATHLETES, who can make the decision that is not born from tired minds. It will take time, but what better time to try it? All negative. Did I miss the part where those on rotation are paid similarly to those regulars would pick. Here’s an idea, if you can’t play for the first team, you don’t take wages by being a back up. What if Ronny and celtic are trying to create “two” first teams. Nah can’t happen in Scotland, like the vote

So you questioned your sanity did you?

Not before time. Any Celtic fan (I have my doubts about you) who sides with a scumbag in a pathetic attempt to find new ways to justify his stubborn pathological hatred of a member of the Celtic family needs his head examined.

Ever considered the possibility that changing an ingrained mentality takes time? Or the possibility that Deila (as you call him) is more intelligent than you are?

Show us your medals? Show us your coaching badges? Lets hear you speak some Norwegian.

C’mon Dom. We’ve been rubbish all season. We can get as fit as feck but if we don’t play football nobody will turn up

Ineptitude is ineptitude – change the diets on the day you get off the plane – not mid-season. Dont be stubborn – work your plan into the mix gradually and divest yourselfs of the players you dont want but kkep those who are going to let you stay in the running. Deila is listening to Collins’ training anecdotes. being stubborn is one thing being stupid is another. the fact that a reptile like Jackson has him figured is only an indication of what a laughing stock he has become. We are into the third month with Deila and the team is wretched – despite not actually being bad on paper. anyone could do better – it may be marginal but it may also be spectactular (in relative terms to Scottish football of course). As a supporter – a Celtic supporter – everyone has the right to spot the theif in our midst. this guy is the artful dodger to Peter L’s Fagin.

He did change the diets at the start, thats where the “remove coke machine” stories came from.

Work your plan in gradually? Why would you do that if you are in charge, he doesnt need acceptance, he needs to lead and take the players along with him, if they dont like it, then they wont be around long. You think the great managers asked for acceptance when they walked through the door?

Ive just read that Keith pish again and wqould like to know where he got this from :

He is merely being tasked with keeping Celtic ticking over as the strongest team in Scotland and right now he’s falling a long way short.

This is exactly the opposite of what Ronnie Deila is hoping to do. hes thinking whole picture, not just beating local teams and then praying for an easy draw before getting humped.
