Celtic Diary Tuesday September 23: Celtic Secure World Title.

Finally , something to gloat about.

The Diary mentioned an online poll last week, which hundreds of you voted in, and the final result is in !

Embedded image permalink

It was close, but that takes Deilas win record to two in eight, giving the players a much needed confidence boost, and hopefully the side can now kick on and start to play the football they are capable of.

Starting tomorrow night, live on the BBC, against Hearts in the League Cup.

The BBC, at a directors meeting yesterday, have been warned that their archaic imperialistic view of the world needs to change after a movement sprang up to boycott the tv licence fee as a protest against their recent coverage of the Scottish independence referendum, and there were calls to modernise the service;

Embedded image permalink

Or at least make it entertaining. Sportsound, who will cover the game, often gives the impression that they share a director with mournful soap opera Eastenders, as presenters and guests  prattle on  in a low monotone  about events on the field, presumably so they can hear any ” sectarian ” singing from the Celtic End, and make you wish the BBC would show adverts at half time instead. Or highlights from Eastenders. Or Homes Under The Hammer.

Anything would be preferable.

Back to the football, and Ronny Deila was asked if he would play his strongest team against Hearts. Which, of course, implies that he knows what his strongest team is.

“We try to do that every time, but there are a lot of reasons why we do it [rotate the squad]. We’ve a long, hard match programme and you have to give some players the opportunity to get match fit.

“That’s something we are thinking of all the time. But in the game against Motherwell there were maybe too many changes. You could see that in the first-half.

“The League Cup is the first trophy we can win and, as I’ve said all the time, both domestic cups are important to us.

“I know the League Cup is sometimes used for playing younger teams, but we have used a lot of our squad the whole time.

“It’s going to be a tough match, the players and I know it, but I’m looking forward to playing another game so we can bounce back from the result against Motherwell.”

We have a picture taken at the team selection meeting, which is held prior to every game…

lots

If a player doesn’t toe the line, and train properly, his name doesn’t even go into the pot. Pplayers such as Leigh Griffiths, who is still linked with a move to Hibernian.

Leigh is at Celtic and nothing is going on with Hibs. There haven’t been any real talks between the clubs.

“Leigh is fighting for a place in the starting XI. We want him here.

“He needs to work hard every day and take his chances when he gets them, same as everybody else at this club.”

But as soon as Hibs agree to pay a higher percentage of his wages, he’ll be heading east.

Deila has done his homework on Hearts;

“I watched Hearts against Hibs and had people at the game on Saturday. We have a good idea of them and the boys have played them so we know what we’re going to meet.”

Does this mean he is prepared to listen to someone elses opinion ahead of a game ? Or , as I suspect, is he a little too fond of the sound of his own voice ?

“There have been ups and downs,” Deila continued  “We have had some good games but sometimes the next game is not good enough, like against Motherwell.

“We need more progression and consistency in the performance. The lowest levels have to be higher and we have to manage that and work as a group.

“There are a lot of teams that will sit in,” he continued. “We got more tempo in second-half and opened Motherwell more but that’s what you have to prepare for.

“In the centre we open teams well but we need more in the wide areas to be at them in different spaces.”

 press office

It all sounds convincing, and to give Ronny credit, he appears to know what he’s talking about. But if thats the language he uses in the dressing room, he’s going to have his work cut out , becuase about halfway through his speech, the players will be playing candy crush on their phones.

May I suggest a more, er, simple approach ?

Pleased to be of assistance.

The debate in the Diary replies yesterday concerned the future of the manager. Some-a minority-claimed it was too early to dismiss him. Others pointed out that Aberdeen and league leaders Dundee Utd, our two biggest challengers , have both lost at Celtic Park already this season. Thats true, but despite losing , United still lead the pack. Inverness are also ahead of us, and they beat the hoops .

It could be that Celtic won’t lead the table until the clocks go back, and on current form , it could well be they will go forward again before we hit the front.

That might sound a little pessimistic, it might even be unrealistic, but there are no signs that this team is a potential championship winning outfit.

So, if we accept that the club is going in the wrong direction, at what point do we finally call time on the Deila experiment ?

If we lose to Hearts ? Or , heaven forbid, in a tie against Second Rangers in a later round ?

If we fail to beat St. Mirren ?

Christmas ?

If we get knocked out of the Cup ?

From what I’ve seen of Deila so far, and how the players are reacting to him, a decision to either give him a full season or cut our losses needs to be made, and stuck to rigidly.

Whatever the club decides, at least we will know that the board  are either one hundred per cent behind him, or are already looking for his replacement.

And if, as is suspected, the players are trying to undermine him, then they will know he is in charge, and not going anywhere.

However, despite the League Cup being a “diddy tournament ” , calls for his dismissal will reach a crescendo by the weekend should the team perform below standard again. A defeat is not unlikely, and he needs to get his finger out now.

Claiming to have finished tinkering with the squad is a good start. It just depends on who he thinks his strongest team is.

Rumours of discontent in the camp were fuelled when he found a note on his desk…

Frank connor was the man featured in yesterdays diary, a man who many thought, especially the players at the time, should have been given the job on a permanent basis. Here’s another assistant manager, one you might not remember…

The players are being asked to work harder on the pitch perhaps some of them don’t like the concept of hard graft and are unhappy?
If so send them out to sea on a Trawler in October for a week and see if they think hard work is that big an ask on £10-25k a week?
Knobs.
Deila is asking them to play a quicker style and a pressing game this is going to take better fitness and harder physical input to achieve.. some might not cope and it may take some time to adjust but I believe it will be for the benefit of all when the do.
Those that don’t or won’t change..adios.

Ronny and Johnny are the biggest bullshitters in the
History of Glasgow Celtic football club!
They will not take Celtic forward only fat Sally could do
a worse job than them or could he?
We will lose more points before December than we did
All last season.
No faith in these two what so ever and that was before we had even kicked a ball .

Ronnie asks for fitter players….players risk fatigue is pushed too much, Ronnie rests where he can.

I can accept the moaning about results but give the guy a break. Its no coincidence the only 2 players are Brown and Commons as those are the ONLY 2 players we have. Deila inherited what exactly and got supported by the Board how exactly?

The guy is trying to change the club, this doesnt happen overnight, over a weekend or over a few months, it can even take over a season or two but just be patient and try looking for positives. Enough of the scaremongering and pitch fork lynch mob antics, whats the point in calling for his head when next guy is only going to get same economic dilemma.

Spot on Desi.
Some of the players Lenny brought in are simply not good enough or simply too fucking slow to cope with the demands in this new system.
Boerrigter Balde Pukki Ambrose Griffiths are all lennys buys.
None of them are Celtic class for me.
Denayer Johansen Wakaso Berget Tonev Guidetti and Scepovic could well be time will tell.
There’s that word Time again..
Something the Daily Record and a few of the glory hunters don’t seem to want to afford anyone in a Celtic jersey.
We have Lustig Mathews and Forrest out injured at the moment Brown has just returned.
All of the above were first picks for Lennon when available.

Look at man united, spent over £100M and still can’t beat teams like Leicester and others; and they have one of the worlds best managers.

Building new teams with new tactics and personnel takes time and effort.

Seems to me based on what Delia says and what he does that he is out of his depth. Took a job that is a job too far as an old boss of mine used to say. That said perhaps he will mature quickly enough to decide if his system will work and whether Celtic need to play a pressing game in the SPFL. He needs some time I agree and he would be well advised to work harder himself and give proven performers a chance to perform.

Des,
It’s not as if we don’t want Deila to succeed. He say’s he knows all his players now ( except Griffiths ), but where is his game-plan and tacticts,to give us hope.New coach,or not,Maribor will stick long in the memory, any half-decent coach would have won this game. That would have gave him breathing space.
Take Scepovic, for example, his s trength is in the air.He came on,on Sunday, and the first cross to him was in the 90’th min.
He should have scored. The two previous games Salzburg and Aberdeen,NO crosses for him to attack in the box.
So,you tell me,why sign a player,if you are not going to play to his strengths ?
Surely,it’s not difficult for Deila to get a basic, tactical ploy, across to players ?
Or,as you say,he needs more time,to draw diagrams on the training pitch,to show them what a cross looks like ?
Totally disillusioned with The Tinkerman !!

Reply to  holy sea

That also raises question on who signed him? Im sure Ronnie said he didnt even know of the player.

I understand peoples annoyance but I believe the guy deserves a lot longer than some willing to give him. Hes been brought in and immediately under severe pressure, and has failed so far, i can concede that but I also feel that its worth waiting on..i do have faith in the new approach..fitter and faster is the way forward overall.

Reply to  Desimond

Des,
Sorry,no excuses,he has put himself under ‘ severe ‘ pressure.
I hope I am wrong, but like Pukki,I feel Celtic is too big a club for Deila to coach,at this stage of his career.
So,if Scepovic isn’t his signing, then what you are saying is,he is more of a fitness coach for us ?Therefore do we not need a Manager above him,to buy players, and have tactical awareness
to fit his players into different systems ?
Or as you elude to,why not just give John Park the gig ?
I just feel,no coach, should be allowed to use a club of our size,
as his work in progress.
Yes,that might be cruel, our board put him their, and the blame lies with them. However,as the strain on his face shows, you have to have thick skin,to be the Celtic gaffer.
If he can’t put a pattern of play into this team,I feel we will beat Heats, over the next 2 months, and we fall further behind
in the league, then Deila should do the honourable deed and resign.

Reply to  holy sea

How many were complaining last week in the Salzburg game or during the Dundee United game or even the Aberdeen game?

If you have the patience, wait until Deila has a full squad and no excuses. I’d even suggest he bomb out any naysayers who could be stirring it, clean break from old days and make or break.

Try looking a year ahead, when we might just need one or two players instead of a whole new team for a new manager. Its up to every fan to have their own view but I think blaming the manager is not the way to go here.

I concede the parallels with Mowbray are interesting, loan signings…but Peter and Co remain in place untouched by blame.

Reply to  Desimond

Des,
I admire your faith in Deila.
You know,no manager/coach ever has a full squad to choose
from. And if your honest,Salzburg could have won 6-2.What about Maribor ? Surely,he should have got that right ?
30 years a season-ticket holder,I certainly have patience, considering what we have had served up down the
years.
In my job,I do future forecasts,1,3 and 5 years.It’s a year from
now, that worries me,as far as Celtic are concerned.
Des,2 players ? Come on.With all our loan players ?
All I am thinking about, this time next year,is will we be in CL
group stage ?
With BT covering CL then,it is worth a minimum 23M.
Will we be ready, and will Deila have the team to get us their ?

Patman if you are happy to watch that rubbish then fair enough. The guy has no plan, no tactica and no clue! I backed Mowbry to the hilt and he made us a laughing stock. we are going the same way, but this will be worse as the FOD are so bad!!

As you say Patman Man Utd have spent 100 mill on players and now an ex player says they need to spend another 150 mill to catch up with the others. Absolutely crazy. Celtic are not in the position obviously to spend that kind of money so where are the young guys that we need to see coming through? The development of young players has to be our priority but the support does not want to see a bunch of ultra fit robots on the park. You go to football to be entertained but when you look at a sport like rugby, with all the guys built like brick shithouses and no skill. Just raw power built to grind the opposition down, where’s the entertainment in that? I come from a generation, very lucky may I say, which watched some great football. The Celtic team of the Stein era was very fit and the big man also took charge of some of the greatest young players in the club’s history. A balance has to be struck in developing youth. Yes obviously fitness is a key factor but is modern coaching making the players less attractive to watch? Football to-day must still be able to entertain, especially at our club where we look so fondly at our past history. Ronny, please take note.

Norwegian football is not renowned for it’s entertainment value, just fit, workmanlike teams that have a ‘system’ and adhere to it rigidly.

‘Robot’ football, if you want to call it that.

No room for ornament or entertainment – 3 points is all that matters. That’s not going to cut it with the majority of our supporters, me included.

But RD is not even managing to get us winning ugly.

The guy,s had long enough three wins in a diddy league, our only away very fortunate, putting on a defensive midfielder at dens park when the score was 1-1,is this his new plan lets try for draws away from home, tinkering almost every game ,this is virtually the same squad plus 6 or so new players and we are struggling in a league we won in a canter last season,he really has to be sacked biut I doubt that pirate pete has the balls to do so

What has fitness, strength, moving the ball faster, got to do with certain players, Ambrose, Kaya Izzyl to name just a few when they can’t control a simple basic pass to their feet, can’t execute the same simple basic pass to somebody else’ s feet, can’t track a player, gets caught out of position, can’t cross a ball while under no pressure, can’t jog along with the ball without it running away for a throw in, these are ment to be seasoned players, Ronnys system will not work, he’s trying to reinvent the wheel, to late, work with the players you have, work to their strengths and adapt accordingly, punt the players who can’t even do the basics, once again Ambrose.. and last but most importantly, STOP FKG TINKERING!!!…. It never brings success HAIL HAIL

Never posted before although I read every day. Agree that we need to back 100% or sack but I would back. Previous managers stuck to their favourites once one or two experiments with resting players back fired. We need to use the squad..
This could be our ‘monster munch’ revolution and I don’t think we can afford to let player power win. Reckon this is a really important time in our history..without the use of the squad and improved fitness I don’t think our policy of developing youngsters and ‘gamble’ signings will work

How did this team become so bad in the space of a couple of months if it’s not the manager? They won the league by 29 points and set a record for clean sheets. They were the epitome of consistency in the league last season. Granted cups and Europe were terrible but why does everyone think we needed to completely overhaul our style. It’s madness. We just needed to tinker and obviously the board has no ambition other than building their CVs as financial experts. So we were not going to get the quality we need. He’s had 15 games to improve and we are going backwards. I jump St don’t think he has what it takes.

You might be an exception to the rule Holy Sea but there are those young enough never to have tasted the sour taste of abject misery following Celtic?
This is a problem with successful Clubs like ours you go through extended periods or relitive success with the odd blip in 20 years and the percentage of young fans attract have no real shite times to go off so subsequently every wee blip then becomes magnified in their head into a major catastrophe.
We underperformed in the Cups under Lenny on the whole but ovenperformed in Europe for the best part but last year we were defo on the slide as performances and attandences began to drop.
Deila needs time and patience what he does not need is knee jerk reactions from unrealistic supporters weaned on relative success.
The end product I happen to think will be worth the wait and definitely something Celtic fans across the board will enjoy.
KTF more importantly keep the heid.

How difficult is it to run a football team…?? Especially when you have the best players in the country playing for you?
I coached and managed at a modest level…and didnae find it all that difficult.
So how much time does RD need…?
It’s obvious to me that the style he is trying to adopt… isn’t working…and more worrying…won’t work..IMO.
All teams need to do is play a high mid-field line against us…hunt us down…and we’re gubbed…resorting to 40 yard lumps doon the park.
When we beat Dundee Utd…they were as open as the Park Gates at lunch-time…and we will almost always skelp teams who play that way against us.
Most teams now, however,…don’t play that way…They have us sussed.
There is something seriously wrong in the set-up and giving him all the time in the world won’t change it.
He needs to change.

Charlies saiz, I don’t think anybody is in a panic,I just think that, but for a few, nobody can see any progress being made. And Desimond, the Celtic managers position is a position that comes with huge amounts of pressure, whether you are a winning manager or not. It is a huge job and is not for the feint hearted or the inexperienced. It could be argued that Neil Lennon had no experience but he had lived and breathed Celtic for years before it, apart from brief spell at Forest. I also understand that Man Utd have tried to buy success quickly and that so far this has eluded them, but to compare us to them even in a shit league, is ludicrous because we had a successful team to start with. If the intention was to sort out our short coming from last season, then Ronny and Johnny have already failed miserably, we went of the CL twice, FFS. When they came to Paradise Ronny said he wanted to play a style similar to Barcelona, but here’s the rub, you need player of Barca quality to play like Barca. I would have been happy this year to participate in the league stages of the CL without progressing, what I have this year is not panic but a severe dose of the s##ts every time we take to the park.I really want RD to prove me wrong, that is the honest truth, but I would like it to be soon, as in Wednesday night and no going back thereafter.

Yestim,
I agree there is no comparison between Lenny and Deila,as Lenny knew the expectations of the fans, and what our club is all about.Deila doesn’t,and in my opinion, seems overwhelmed

With regard to,Charlie’s ‘ glory hunters ‘ panicing,I was stating there are many like me,who have been at Celtic Park for years,
who do not think he is up to the job.Which is in contrast,to what Charlie was implying, fans that only want success, are the first to say get rid.As they are only Celtic fans because we started winning trophies. However,as I pointed out, this is not necessarily the case.

However,I have a REAL fear Deila is not the man for us.Maybe,I am still angry, that he didn’t get us past Maribor. As the CL is a big void for all of us.Hopefully,I will start to mellow, when we beat Hearts, tomorrow.

I find it difficult to comprehend how ‘elite’ professional footballs playing for the wealthiest & best resourced team in the country cant grasp what system the manager wanst them to play in; really: is it so difficult to grasp???, if they are so one dimensional or thick to understan whats expected then c’mon ti buck…why are they playing for Celtic? If there are players ‘undermining’ Deila then said players should be given the boot. Deep down we all want the 10, thats my fear, we lose this campaign and the gemms a bogey.Am I impressed with Deila naw, he talks a good game..but dont we all. He can have all the time in the world…just dont buck up oor destiny.

Big Jock adapted his “system” to the players he had instead of the other way round. We can give Deila a bit more time but not time enough to lose the league. Tonight will be important to him either way. He has now dropped half the points we dropped all last season and except for big Forster, the team is the same. Anybody on this forum could put out a winning team week after week: system? Pass, move into space, put the ball in the net. Always track back. Simples.
