Celtic Diary Wednesday September 17: What a Difference a Brown Makes .

Scott Brown, Celtics livewire captain should take his place in the middle of the park tomorrow tea time against Red Bull Salzburg. Our own proverbial bull in a china shop is relishing  the chance to make up for lost time this season, and his influence could be crucial if the hoops  are to take anything from the game.

It hasn’t been a great start to the season so far, a bit stop starty to coin a phrase-or invent one- and the best  we can say about it is that its been interesting. FIFA.com previewed the match, under this headline, which actually made me feel a little better about the tournament;

Heavyweights open Europa group stage campaign

Celtic bagged a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at the weekend after a rocky patch without a win since 16 August. New boss Ronny Deila was however able to field new signings Aleksandar Tonev, Stefan Scepovic and Swedish striker John Guidetti, on-loan from Manchester City, in their morale boosting win.

But pressure is mounting on the 1994 finalists Salzburg too, as their coach Adolf Hutter has overseen three straight defeats with club owner and energy drink magnate Dietrich Mateschitz looking for a return on his investment. They lost their previous manager Roger Schmidt and star player Senegal’s Sadio Mane to Southampton in the summer. Both Celtic and Salzburg however are expected to qualify from Group D.

 Brown tried to make us feel better about the Europa League as well, by mentioning the 2003 final against Seville;

We are disappointed that we didn’t get into the Champions League.

“We have to go out there and show we are a good team and we can play against these teams home and away.

“Seville was a huge day for the club. There were around 100,000 Celtic fans there.

“It would be great to do that again but we’re not going to get too far ahead of ourselves. We have to take it game by game and see how we do.

“We would love to bring memories like that back again but we have to take it one game at a time and do as well as we can in the group.

“We’ve got a big squad now, with new wingers and a couple of new strikers in. They are looking good in training so hopefully they can take that into games.”

Right, he does know that Guidetti is ineligible ? More important, just to be on the safe side, someone tell manager Ronny Deila. UEFA are unlikely to bend the rules again  for us this season, otherwise people might start to think they are a wee bit corrupt. Once a year is more than enough, just to give the conspiracy theorists something to moan about.

Brown continued;

It’s just been getting used to the new shape and new players. Now the transfer window is closed, that’s our squad settled. We’ve got no excuses now.

“We have to try to push on now and start playing the football we know we can play. We did really well against Aberdeen and those three points were a boost.”

“I’ve been trying to push myself as much as possible and test the boundaries but my hamstring is feeling as good as it has ever felt so long may that continue.

“It was a relief to come through the first training session, let alone the first game. Now I’ll take it as it comes on Thursday. I feel good just now and that’s three days after the game.”

Having Brown back is a massive boost, he drives the other players on, and as long as he doesn’t get too enthusiastic, he will be invaluable out in Austria, where reallistically we should get a result. My only concern is  that other teams are getting used to our shape before we do.

Former striker Chris Sutton reckons Celtic should prioritise the Europa League. He told anyone who would listen yesterday that;

‘Celtic, for me, should prioritise this Europa League campaign,’

‘They can afford to drop points in the league, lose games and still win the league because they are far and away the best team in Scotland.

Er, not too many more. We’re fourth at the moment, and lets be honest, we don’t deserve to be any higher.

‘They would get a real shot in the arm from performing well in this competition. The Europa League has a totally new dimension now with the winners going straight into the Champions League. Why can’t it be Celtic?

Thats a very good point. Going straight into the UCL as Europa winners would provide a kick start to our season next year,  give a helping hand to the old co-efficient, and try to bring the national game up a few levels. The sooner we lose these fraught, early starts the better.

‘Things change quickly in football. There is a bit of doom and gloom about the Champions League but that’s gone now. Celtic could win the treble and could go on a good run in the Europa League and go on and win it.

‘They have top players like Kris Commons and Scott Brown coming back and players who can grow. Celtic have good raw attributes – they just need to pull it all together.’

Sutton was promoting the live coverage of the game by BT Sports, and was as straightforward and honest off the pitch as he was on it.

‘There are things I haven’t understood about the Europa League and the mentality of clubs in England. They play the youth team and get knocked out. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

‘I think Celtic should really go for this campaign because they have everything to gain.

‘The first two games in this group stage are absolutely crucial. Salzburg have lost their last three, but that’s dangerous going into this because they have chucked a lot of money at their side and we all might think Celtic should go there and win, but it doesn’t work like that.

‘That might work against Celtic. But they can go there with confidence. The main thing is: “Don’t lose the game.”’

As Sutton says, theres no reason why we shouldn’t aim to be there or thereabouts when the trophy is being handed out, but it will take hard work, maybe some luck, and more importantly, a little more flexibility in style.

 And less rhetoric.

Though the fact we know where we will be playing for the next few months means we can plan a proper campaign, and to be fair to Ronny , he does like to plan things.

One game at a time here, because I think one thing we can agree one is that the team that faces Salzburg tomorrow will be much removed from the line up come the knock out stages. Between now and then, some will come in, and some will go. One thing the bold Ronny has proved so far is that he is indeed bold when it comes to chopping players who aren’t performing.

Even Jo Inge Berget, who many thought was his blue eyed boy has been pushed down the pecking order, simply for not coming up to the required standard, and not, as many thought, for breaking the concentration of his team mates by having a ridiculous haircut.

Alekasandr Tonev faces a nervous few days, as the SFA could take up to two weeks to get  the evidence they need to find him guilty of racially abusing Shay Logan, the Aberdeen defender who sounds a bit like Shay Long, but is spelt differently.

So far, there doesn’t appear to be any evidence against the Bulgarian, who really needs to get his mum back living with him if this is the sort of nonsense he gets up to when she lets him out on his own. Otherwise, it looks as though there isn’t really a case to answer. These days, had anything actually happened, the video or audio would have been all over the internet.

Evening Times columist Davie Hay agrees.

What it boils down to at the moment is one player saying something was said and the other player saying it wasn’t said.

What will the outcome be? I don’t know. Was something said? I don’t know.

Time will tell what happens in this situation and what the true version of events was.

Now, if mobile phones and multi camera tv coverage was around in 1974, when Hay had a disagreement with an Atletico Madrid player in the tunnel after that game, then I would gladly pay to see that….

 Over and Over again.

Now , heres a picture I’d never seen before. It appeared on twitter -courtesy of Lisbon Lion-a few days ago, and you might struggle to identify the game its taken from…

The referendum takes place tomorrow, just in case you weren’t aware. Each of you will vote as you see fit, thats what democracy is all about.

But beware the spin from politicians and from the international business community.

For instance, BP are now saying that the attitude of residents in the Gulf of Mexico has softened towards them, claiming that their clean up crews , after the huge oil spillage a while back,  are helping the local economies.

If thats the case a big thank you to  Al Qaeda for creating all those jobs in airport security.

How about a better analogy?

Portugal, Greece, Ireland………Country’s tied into a currency which they NEED to leave so they can dig themselves out of a hole?
This will be Scotland.
Scotland will also put in power a right of centre government. The left is so fragmented and the Tory’s who left for the SNP will be in heaven if they get seperation.
Ask yourselves what happens after a yes vote?
Lots of Edinburgh justice coming your way if the country seperates.

What a difference a year makes !!
Remember,this time last year,the bold Lawwell,interviewed on
radio sevco(scotland),a few hours before Morton cup game.He
told the world, everything is going great at Celtic.” We are NOW a Champions League club”We have a great manager, and are the envy of many BIG clubs in Europe.
Whatever happened to that great club, now with a rookie
manager, and looking at the big boys in the CL,from the

you’ve been listening to the liars and bully boys again.
The CBI will insist on a currency agreement – Scotland will be able to negotiate from a position of strength.
If sterling begins to buckle, Scotland can look to get out of it – we won’t be tied to it.
The alternative to a YES vote – a tory government for the rest of our lives and tied to a currency that everyone in the no camp seems to think is a bad idea.

Think Bawsman is the only person that I have read on this site who has an inkling of common sense. All I have read on the site the past while is the outpouring of ill informed opinions and half baked notions that an independent Scotland will be an idyllic land of social harmony, free of bigotry and oppression, the lame will walk, the dead will rise, the sun will shine, etc. all of which will be paid for by North Sea Oil. Fact is there really isn’t enough oil to sustain an independent Scotland which has set its sights on Utopian values. NSO has already been licensed and sold to oil majors and independent exploration companies. The companies will decide if they will extract the oil, and they will only decide to extract it if the price is right. A punitive tax regime will force the companies to shut up shop and move to countries where governments are more compliant, with more flexible tax regimes. Alex Salmond and his party point to the economic model of Norway as an example of oil rich independent country, what is omitted from his vision is the prohibitive personal taxes that the Norwegian publics pays to support their heavily burdened welfare state. Effectively oil revenue alone is insufficient to support the welfare systems in place.
What I really can’t get my head around is the fact that although the majority of the contributors to the site purport to be politically socialist in outlook, does their socialism end at the Scottish border? Surely socialism transcends borders and views a needy person as a needy person, no ethnicity. If so, surely independence is divisive and as such contravenes the fundamental beliefs of socialism.

I sse the SNP as a vehicle to free Scotland from the tyranny of westminster rule , where we’ve been treated like idiots .My sincere hope and wishes are to see the diminishing of the main Scottish parties. Like local politics have witnessed through the years , the rise of Independent MSP’s

A word on oil companies – The polititians are well aware of the tactics employed by these companies.

They have control of how much is put on sale in the market / free market – excessive supply will affect the top price in the market place , so they restrict.

They complain to bent oficials ( who don’t want the threats these companies use and increase grants and tax write-offs

Their procedure has been to extract the oil with lower costs to maximise profit .

There is loads of oil and gas around Scotland , this is why Westminster can’t afford our separation, we/they’re actually bankrupt , as most european countries are with the exception of Germany.

No-0ne actually knows how much oil and gas in Scotland .

back to football matters – I never liked the criticism Ronny Delia attracted . Calling for his head after failing to qualify for Champions League. We were never ready for the qualifiers – probably a good thing as we would be embarrassed , hopefully we will be successful in Europa Cup.

I’m all for boycotting in principle only , sa for ensuring staff get minimum wage.

I really did enjoy the return of Fergus – this guy was ” the real deal ” however suppoteres at the time were dubious.

Thank god he loved the Celts , and diddn’t come fro Govan.

Bit of dramatic paraphrasing of Emilano Zapata, Steveo?

“I’d rather live one day standing tall than a life time on my knees”

At least he was a true socialist revolutionary with a cause and poeple to fight for. Do you really think there is a parallel between a Mexican revolution and the referendum?

Raymobhoy

I definitely think that there are parallels in the Independance debate, with Celtic and Rangers.
If the Celtic fans had just sat on their arses and waited for something to happen, the club would have been dead and buried. But they mobilised and forced the old board out. Now it might not be run the way we would want and is not in the best shape that it has been, but it is still alive and kicking.
The Ranger fans on the other hand, in their belief that “we canny do anything, gonnae someone else do it for us”, have sat back and put their trust in millionaires who have not had the clubs best interest at heart and look where it has got them.
Mark my words, if Scotland says No on Thursday, the millionaires from Westmonster will say, “You have given us a mandate to do whatever we want to you, so get up on the naughty step and take your punishment, and don’t ever try anything like that ever again.
There is no second chance at this, instead of living in a hole waiting for the crumbs from the top table, we need to lift our heads up and grasp this chance of hope over fear.

They saw England becoming stronger and affluent while building their British Empire . I’ll spare the gaudy details what they did to countries and their population , however it is well chronocled.

Scotland sent their ships to warmer climes wiithout having a clue . They provisions include loads of balaclavas and other useless items required for survival – they didn’t , and Scotland was skint . They then went and kissed a few arses and were allowed to unite , We have bled dry eversince.

I think its fair to say no one really has a monkeys what would happen in a “yes” world. Its really a question of “do you wanna gamble?” I’ve long held similar views to Bawsman and Stiofan above, but in recent weeks my position has softened, as I realise, theoretically anything can happen if the will and strength is there to make it happen. But to make the world a better place you need a strong set of leaders to take you there, and therein lies my final sticking point. I think the SNP leadership are halfwits. And I have no truck for the scottish labour party at the moment, who are all at sea.

Now all politicians are lying arseholes – they have to be, its called politics so forget this notion that an independent Scotland will have a bunch of well meaning, squeaky clean, honest people sitting in parliament. They’ll be just as nefarious as Westminister on a relative scale. But you only need look at a piece of legislation close to all our hearts, The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland ) Act (I think its called) to see the sort of shite decision making and judgement that’ll be applied across the board in your new “independent” country.

So do I wanna take the gamble when I see who’s gonna be running the show? Ultimately, no. You can call it fear, I’ll call it common sense.

Rondo

We can be dictated by approx. 650 Westminster arseholes or
100 approx. in Scotland. The key differences are : we can have a reasonable input from our elected officials.

I have been in management and ffought for the working man . I was a shop steward and union activist , who saw union corruption at elevated level.Ithought the principle of communism was excellent , however in practice it enslaved many peoples brutally.

In the short term Salmond is a political figurehead , Nicola Sturgeon will be installed as first minister. My hidden agenda : I hope that future generations will have hope and inspiration after tomorrow. So i have cast my vote weeks ago in the hope of Scotland being free.

Devoy45

A YES vote is a vote for democracy, pure and simple. Either you are a democrat or you ain’t. Our neighbours in England outnumber us 10-1. They always get any government that a big number of their friends and neighbours want, Labour or Tory. We have huge trouble getting the UK government that we vote for: half the time in my voting lifetime. The rest of the UK has 303 Tory MPs in Westminster, we have ONE. If they only had one Tory MP in Westminster but were run by the Tories, they would understand why we must somehow make our votes count once again. This can never happen as long as we are in a Disunited Kingdom, where we will always be outnumbered 10-1.You can only have a successful marriage, nation or Parliament when it has equal parts. Up to 2014, with regard to Trident, Bedroom Tax, Poll Tax, foreign wars we have had as much say so as we would under Mugabe/Putin/Kim Il Jong and many more. Many great socialists/communists understand small nation nationalism: James Connolly, John MacLean, Ho Chi Minh, Gramsci and others. Nationalism in huge states is vile: Britain/China/Russia/USA etc.
If you fear the future, vote NO and rejoice with your allies like the Orange Order, UKIP, BNP. In five years time, you’ll regret putting your X in the wrong place. Ruled by Boris, Nigel and god knows who else they dredge up, maybe Maggie 2! Maybe Geldof can come up here and tell us how to run our lives smoothly too!
I’m a very elderly Tim who knows racism/sectarianism when he sees it. A new Scotland is more likely to get rid of sectarianism than the Old Britain. We can scrap the monarchy later, at our leisure. All our Irish Catholic family and ancestors had to fight tooth and nail for centuries what we can do with one pencil and piece of paper.
English socialists and working classes will benefit from our example and can get cracking with their own democracy. After all, giving us sovereignty also gives it to them: two for the price of one. Wales and Norn can then vote whatever suits their own democratic choice. If you’re unselfish, please just consider voting YES.

One thing: come Friday morning, I’ll still be supporting the team I’ve supported through good and bad times all my life.

Peace and good health to you all: Tims, Huns and Trolls alike. Be kind to your wives, siblings, children and grandchildren.
Maybe we all agree we can get back to the fitba after that. It’s just a game, just like life or politics.

Lets get the NO policy clear here, once and for all. After the last independence vote the researched answer to why the NO vote won was because we were feart! Plain and simple. The current NO vote campaigners are using the same old tactics, scare the s##t out of them, speeches should include a fair bit of fire and brimstone, the end of the world, armageddon!
At present I spend a huge amount of my working hours consulting in London and it’s surrounding areas. The political current, here and now is that London and the Home counties should be separate from the rest of the UK as it produces more tax income than the all the other regions of England, Wales and Norn Iron.
The independence vote has stirred up a lot of emotions in London and the pledge in yesterday’s chip wrappers will be rejected, by the English voters, out of hand. Londoners are aware of the net contribution Scotland makes to the UK and are surprisingly agreeable to it, provided the same case is made for Londoners. Which in the event of a NO vote I would be forced to agree with them.
Where the scaremongering should be and is the point I am making is that if Scotland remain as part of the UK, it would be a UK where the political landscape has changed and the pledges of yesterday will never bear fruit. London and the home counties will try to separate from the UK. This will be heavily supported by the Tory’s and UKIP. Trust me on this one factor Southern English people do believe they are the chosen ones, they will have no hesitation on voting yes to a provincial government.
this will leave Scotland supporting the rest of the North of England (past Watford), Wales and Norn Iron.
Please vote YES to independence before London does.

The vote is tactical. We tried for a hundred years to move the UK to the left. That project failed miserably. Time to try another way.

The No voters are the same who in 1979 went Scotland would be doomed if we had devolution. Since the turn of the century no matter who has been in power the peoples lot has improved, Free tuition fees etc; according to Lamont a free lunch. Now we have the same politicians Brown rising from the grave to put the hear of God in the way of democracy. Died head and the rest are morons, as the Labour tune wnt in 1997 Things can only get better. Christ if this is better withATOS started by Labour and the iniquitous bedroom tax then this country is a cess pit. If you drive through Glasgow the areas where No is being promoted is Bearsden, Clarkston, Giffnock as the better off are happy with the pigswill they get. How any Celtic supporter could agree with the Lodge I do not understand!

Some nice sentiments in that piece Devoy45. However that is all they are, unfortunately sentiments will not stop being a country already divided by sectarianism becoming more divided by the same sectarian sickness that has many times blighted my life and the lives of my family. Will a yes vote get rid of the orange order and a bias police force? A yes vote will encourage a Derry’s Walls’ mentality in a section of the Scottish population in which the mentality is already imbued. As BPS points out above, the Scottish government have already given us The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland ) Act. Combine this prohibitive act, with the legislative will to abolish the need for corroboration and you have a franchise for social disaster. I never noticed fans of any other teams other than Celtic being ‘kettled’ last season, wonder why. I have seen nothing to suggest that sectarianism will somehow disappear with a yes vote. I suspect the contrary.
My suspicion is not based on fear, fear is not a factor in the referendum, pragmatism and life experience is. Comparison with the Irish struggle for independence is not valid in the referendum debate. I have noticed throughout the debates, a tendency to dramatise the referendum into something that is not. It is not a struggle for independence it is a vote nothing more or less, it is the consequences of the vote which may yet provide the struggle. Those that are old enough to remember should recall the consequence of the last positive vote for Scottish independence. Ironically it was that vote that gave us the Thatcher years. Those not old enough, well to ‘if you know the history…..’

I think the ability to vote itself and the debate prior to the vote and then holding true to the outcome of the vote is the democracy in action. As far as I know voting will continue whether Scotland decides to remain part of the UK or become an independent nation. I didn’t see either side advocating the end or beginning of democracy. I do see the Political Parties who favor the UK talking seriously of major reform and much more self government inside a UK concept that becomes more regionalized. Would be best to get those pledges written down and signed by lawyers prior to the vote. I personally would vote no, although I cant vote even though I am Scottish and can prove I was born there and may live there again. Ok fair enough they made rules and it means I get no vote. Anyway my point is, that although I’d vote no, if it is a yes vote I will do my utmost – whatever small contribution that might be – to make an independent Scotland a roaring success. Conversely if it is a yes vote, then lets make sure that everybody makes good on their more devolved power promises and a new relationship healthier relationship with England appears. As for Ronnie – give him time I’m sure it will start to click with training and practice!

Scotland and the Scottish are a credit. To hold a referendum on such a fierce subject as indepenance in such a dignified and civilised way is a fine example to the rest of the world. Democracy at its best. So many countries would never get this opportunity, God bless you Scotland regardless of the result. 96 per cent expected to vote, brilliant. Come on celtic get going tomorrow night. Hail hail

You cannot be Independent without your own currency.

September 19th, with a YES vote, England is not now a neighbour, it is our nearest competitor for every job, industry, export.

English folk do not want us to leave but if we do it will be a very dirty divorce, they always are.

The reason SNP didn’t raise the 3% tax they could have because folk don’t want to pay tax, they vote you out.

Why do you think Foot, Kinnoch and Smith were in opposition? Because they had a left wing manifesto which called for tax hikes and we don’t vote for wage cuts.

I’m a Labour Party member and Trades Unionist, I fully agree Labour will not get into power post YES.

Thing is, who will.?…………………..You guys naively thinking you will get some left wing idealist party/government are in for a massive shock.

Stand by for some real Edinburgh ‘justice’. I don’t have religion so all I will say is that Catholics make up 16% of the population, that’s a quiet voice.

Religion should not be a factor in voting , hopefully Scotland has reducuced this and i hope we always will.

Bigots have no place in this world today – let’s vote on issues we believe are necessary to promote the good people of Scotland.

I have never voted with religion being the key issue.

DO NOT BE AFRAID FELLOW SCOTS

you really are a moron.
you’re whole argument is based on the bully boy tactics of the tories.
Why do you think the tories want us as part of the uk, because we have the financial clout. There are no tory mp’s in Scotland, so why else would they care about us?
With that clout, we will be able to determine the terms of a monetary union and if it doesn’t suit, we can look at alternatives. A no vote means we are stuck in the monetary union that we presently have – decided by the English tories – this is the monetary union that the no camp are saying would be bad for us, but that we’re part of just now!!!!
The labour party needs us for the Scottish vote, nothing else. They no labour would be even more unelectable without us.
A YES vote will allow the Scottish Labour Party to re-invent itself as a socialist party once it is no longer tied to the Westminster labour party.
My dad was a labour party member for over 40 years – he’ll be turning in his grave watching what has become of the party – in bed with the tories, supporting the tories, propping up the tory government – shame on them, shame on every one of them who has sold out their principals in this campaign. I hope the Scottish people remember them post YES vote.

Substance abuse is bad for you you know.

You’re gonna be really shocked at who gets to drive the bus if it’s a yes vote, it will not be driven on the left.

VOTE YES

celtsfan67

NO FEAR.

Labour must, and will re-invent itself after the YES vote. The old etonian millionaire capatilist politics of the remainder of the UK will be overrun by lib-dem, tory, ukip and other ultra right – wing scum.

In the Independant Scotland- there will be seats in power for the SNP, the Green party, the Socialist party, the New Labour party (of a slightly left wing inclination- finally!). There will be independant MP’s, small amounts of LibDems and maybe torys.

Finally, we can re-invent politics. Politicians working together for the good of ALL the people.

Send the oxvbridge millionaires, who took 2 years to realise we might want to leave them, away. Get a parliament with people in it who represent the people- not big business, not self interest, but the people- ALL of the people, all of the time!

Send them homeward.

Don’t be afraid – Just say YES.

It’s not Independence if you don’t have your own currency.

How many countries went independent thinking “Hold on, my coins”

Move on man. You claim your Labour but say they are hopeless.Well fucking fix it then, that the whole point of the referendum, rip it up and start again. You actually sound like Johann Lamont and her cohorts “Yeah but no but…rammit”…stop moaning and get on with making it better rather than sitting on sidelines saying “hell mends yeeze aw” or you will simply beleft behind to wallow in your self pity like Labours pals in the Orange Order and biased Media.

Some do, others moan.

I would buy it if they wanted complete Independence, 100%

What you are buying is a Spiv, a Spiv that you’ve rolled over to and he’s tickling your belly.

Salmond was ALL IN for the Euro, thought Fred the Shred was the greatest thing since sliced bread, thought Ireland and Iceland had economic templates that Scotland should follow.

Independence? with our MAIN COMPETITOR for industry and jobs holding our purse strings? Keeping the Monarchy? Shoving Celtic fand in jail for singing about our heritage? You’ll be having a knees up at Hampden when they have their parties with the great family atmosphere soon enough.

Superb post mate. I was 100% No for the last year but gradually over the last month, having done loads of reading/research I’ve gradually shifted to totally undecided(I Think!!!!) Your post has helped me clarify my thoughts and summeed up exactly how I was beginning to feel.I have now decided to vote YES as this is a huge opportunity for us to start to control our own destiny. It will be a bumpy ride but ultimately I feel it will be the correct decision for me,my children,my grandchildren and my fellow Celts. By the way I am a 55 year old director of my own successful business and am not basing this decision on a “braveheart” mentality.
