Celtic Diary Monday September 1 : Transfer Deadline Day !

Or , as Pater Lawwell calls it, Monday.

Embedded image permalink

Celtic drew 1-1 at Dens Park yesterday against Dundee, meaning that after ten games in charge , Ronny Deila has won four, lost four and drawn two.

Against one of the lesser teams in the league, it has to be looked at as two points dropped, rather than a point gained” said Dundee boss Paul Hartley after the game.

The home side were up for it from the kick off, and scored after just fifty seconds. It took until the second half and substitute Leigh Griffiths to equalise, and that was from a deflected shot.

We’d all like Deila to succeed. We all still support him, but like a dog thats been run over, and showing no signs of improvement, it’s probably kinder to send him on to the next world.

Harsh, and no doubt many will disagree, but I’ve tried, and if he stays, I’ll try again, but the man is devoid of ideas, and the players are fully aware of that.

Take Emilio Izaguerre. He got booked yesterday, and really should have been sent off. One argument is that he is tired after a long summer with no break. Fair enough, that might be the case.

But constantly having to cover for the inept Jo Inge Berget down on the left hand side means that poor Izzy is fighting a Custeresque lone stand on that flank, whilst being asked to provide the main attacking threat as well.

No surprise that Dundee could have won the game with a number of late raids down their right. Izzy was knackered, and Griffiths, who replaced Berget before half time, didn’t track back either.

The Honduran rarely complains, but sooner or later you get the feeling that Berget ( or even Deila )will be a victim of some Honuran style kick boxing if Izaguerre continues to be isolated out there. The Norwegian with the unusual hair style has proven to be a disaster. He might know the system, but he isn’t good enough to play it.

Roberto Baggio was known as the ” Divine Ponytail ” due to his , er, unusual hairstyle. Berget has  more a sort of “Divine Lump” Except it’s Divine intervention he needs in order to reach the level required at Celtic..

One other thing I noticed yesterday was the lack of communication between players. Evident in that many, many passes or crosses went to no-one. No-one accepted responsibility for implementing the game plan. Thats if there was one, which seems unlikely.

Charlie Mulgrew, for all his faults at least tries to give instructions, and of course Scott Brown never stops. But neither were there yesterday, and Kris Commons is still trying to sort his own game out, so making him yesterdays leader was a major mistake.

Overall, it was depressing. coupled with the news that Virgil van Dijk has apparently been told that he is going nowhere, ( except probably Arsenal. Or Southampton. Or Sevilla . but not Sunderland. ) and therefore took the huff and said he wasn’t right in the head to play, it made for a miserable Sunday lunchtime. Will Lawwell decide that an unhappy player on the books tomorrow is better than several millions in the bank ? Hardly worth answering the question. Especially as Ronald Koeman is ready to test the resolve of the Celtic CEO.

Deila has bluntly stated that no-one will be leaving. Right you are, Ronny

The first of which is Holmbert Fridjonsson, who has gone to Danish side Brondby on loan this morning….And the word is they’ll be back later today for Pukki. Fair play to them if they’ve see a partnership there….

We should gazump Manchester United for Daley Blind. Then we could make him captain, and have D. Blind leading the Blind.

The ultimate nightmare scenario could already be underway. John Collins has been very quiet of late, and he may be biding his time for the increasingly inevitable departure of Deila. Theres no football this week, and the next game is on the thirteenth at home to Aberdeen. Which is a little daunting at the moment.

Although we have a game in hand, Celtic are in fifth place, six points adrift of Inverness. And i haven’t seen any evidence that this side is capable of catching up.

It’s very easy to criticise, but harder to offer a solution. Especially when the word on the streets is that some were warned off Celtic due to the ongoing problems there. In a recent interview, Johann Mjallby hinted that he and Neil Lennon had warned Henrik Larsson off, and Lennon is reported to have said the same thing to Dan Petrescu, who was also apparently offered the job.

And the problems are piling up.

Piss poor on the park. Stumbling around off it.

No wonder Stefan Scepovic changed his mind about signing. He’s now decided to go somewhere else. Anywhere else, in fact, leaving Celtic in the strange position of having just fifteen or so hours of the transfer window left, and not having spent a penny on transfer fees.

The player had passed his medical, was about to sign a contract, and Lawwell said

” We don’t understand it ”

Maybe someone gave Scepovic a video of this seasons games…

Lawwell has spoken to the support, via Celtic tv and the papers, but instead of offering an explanantion, he has blamed everything and everyone else. As for this nonsense about missing Rangers, thats little more than insulting our intelligence. Is he really suggesting we should allow them back ? Should we just forget about the millions we were cheated out of by their somewhat original ideas of paying wages ?

And thats without the near 300 creditors they shafted.

So , where do we go from here ?

We’ve already outlined our plan A, in the Diary last week, “Where Do We Go From Here ? ”

That still stands, but I’d be speaking to Willie McStay and Tom Boyd just in case.

A defeat to Aberdeen will make it very difficult for Deila to continue. and then theres the Europa League, which won’t be easy. and then its Hearts at home in the League Cup. Which may well be the most difficult of all.

The next three games will determine Deilas Celtic career, whether we like it or not.

What’s Willies phone number ?

Just in case.

Saturdays Diary featured a picture of the goalkeeping staff under Lou Macari. Pat Bonnar is now a tv pundit, Joe Corrigan lives near Knutsford-I spoke to him a few months ago, he wasn’t overly proud of the decisions to let Shay Given and Brad Freidel leave, but we did keep Stewart Kerr and the unf;lappable Gordon Marshall.

Happier times now, and what would we give to have just one of these guys back in the hoops…

Name as many as you can if you like, but the question is, where was this taken?

I’ve a feeling Retro Celt may well be saying ” I know, Pick me ” again.

Anyhoo, thanks to him for the picture, it’s cheered me up just looking at it.

WTF is this article. I would like to know where we are going to get a manager that will come in, sort out all the off field problems, that relate to the on field ones. Get players who we all said last year were pish, play at the level they weren’t good enough for last year. Sign new players when nobody of any value will sign for us. Win every game in every competition because let’s face it nothing less is going to do. Fickle fans eh we don’t want much do we! He has had 10 games, yes only 10 it will have taken him that long to realise the players are not good enough and it doesn’t matter where you play them. We are in for the long haul with this manager, feck sake he has had less time than David Moyes!

He has practicaly the same squad that Lennon walked the league with, that set clean sheet records and played some great football at times with, also Commons being outstanding, the manager and his pathetic system bullshit are the only major factors that have changed, the players either can’t or won’t play his system and its because it doesn’t FEKIN WORK, Ronny has to go before we make a proper shambles of the league, if he carries on till Christmas theirs every chance we could be 12/15 points off the leaders and on the verge of finishing 2nd in a 1 horse race. Take Lennon’s squad. Remove Forster, Ledley, Brown, Forrest and Samaras. That’s the core of Lennon’s team gone. Remember when Kayal got ther odd appearance under Lennon and we all groaned? He’s been the best midfielder that Deila has in the last couple of games!

For Sunday’s game, also remove Lustig and Van Dijk. Replace them all with pretty much nobody (except Berget, who has been poor so far)

So to judge Deila on ‘Lennon’ did it is nonsense.
Last season Lennon had many terrible performances, saved by a Commons miracle (and he’s been shit too)

Deila has made mistakes, and has hardly hit the ground running. But the main issue is the terribly average squad.

We NEED a striker. We NEED creativity. We NEED someone to replace Izzy when he looks tired and refuses to defend. We NEED to do something about Ambrose.

But to lay it ALL at the feet of Deila is short sighted.

Deila M for murder, that’s the football we are watching. We stole a point at Dundee. His 4-2-3-1 system, does NOT work as we don’t have a target-man.Talking of which, the bold Ron on Scepovic, “He wants to play for Celtic, that’s a good start. ”
Really ?? How FOOLISH does Deila look now.He should do the HONOURABLE deed, and RESIGN !!
Stokes and Griffiths, not the greatest of strikers, but they scored plenty of goals as a partnership, when Griffiths arrived in January.Deila the Tinkerman, has not played them, together
for 90 minutes. His textbook rigid system,is creating MORE problems than need be.
I agree Ralph,if we don’t beat Aberdeen, the writing is on the wall, for Deila the Dreamer !!

ah well another waste of time at Celtic on deadline, more players rejecting moves incoming and worse still more rejects staying at Celtic. Am sorry the old mantra from the board “there is no money” doesn’t wash anymore. All the previous club investment has cleared debt meaning we are now sitting with millions in the bank from Forster and other player sales this season (not including what we get for Van Dijk)

If VVD goes surely Deila must go as well. He cannot publicly state that a player will not be sold then he goes. VVD is (at the moment) the only selable asset that we have who could be sold for any decent money. If Lawell wants money in he will go and the surely means that the manager doesnt have the trust of the board.

I hope I’m proved wrong today, but a club, the size of ours not spending one penny on a permanent transfer is unforgivable.

To be fair if the manager and CEO come out saying “no probs you can get him if you want him” the price drops by a million or two. Any player is available at the right price, so if we get offered it he will be going.
I do not expect Deila to say anything other than he wants to keep players on camera, behind the scenes I’m sure they’ve all had a chat and VVD will be well aware of the minimum we’ll accept.

I’ve said my piece regarding signings and transfers…
What I will say now is…
For Berget to be even in the pool for yesterday’s game…let alone start the feckin’ thing…beggars belief.
The guy is totally useless and shouldn’t be near a Celtic shirt.
That,to me,showed Ronnie has not got a clue…and as for his system…? A total waste of time…
Our players can’t handle it…and the opposition love it…
So easy to play against….
If he stays…It’ll be a long hard season.

Never a Celtic manager in a million years.I wont be back until he is gone! No plan, no clue and no idea how to set the team up, it is clear the players have had enough! I gave Mowbury the benefit of the doubt, right up to St Mirren – not this time. We really are shocking!!

Good then feck of if you don’t like Ronny. We play effecitively a 4-3-3 thats 3 strikers not 2, can’t get any more attack minded than that. And yeah we did sell players, our diddies, puki, balde, firdjhonssen and mcgeouch.

Just listening to Ronny’s after match talk at Dundee. ‘We will be stronger after the window then before’…well that won’t be hard eh Ronny. I have said from the start that this bloke is another Mowbray. How the hell Berget gets a game is beyond me. We now hear that Skepovic doesn’t want to come. Who can blame him.was he even Celtic class?? Lawell will now be trawling through the bargain basement to find someone to appease the fans. Perhaps trotting out the usual excuses….too high wages…didn’t want to come..let down at the last minute..not enough time…etc etc However we need people in the team that are willing to fight, where are they? Bertie Auld would never have let the team away with this nonsense!!

I can just picture Lawwell sitting in his office watching the clock countdown to 11pm, thinking, ya fckn beauty, sold 40,000 season tickets and huvnae spent 2 bob, got £12,000,000 in and I’m just waiting for this wee call from Mr Koemann and we can round it up to a cool £20,000,000. Better get on the blower tae Dermot and make sure ma bonus goes into that new offshore account. Do I care what the fans think??? no really, they’ve always got the The Rangers tae entertain them, cause they’ll certainly no see that at the Park.

Based on the utter shoite that Lenny in particular and Ronnie ( Berget) brought to the club…do you no think they should be gettin’ pelters? The money that has been squandered on dross players is unacceptable..and is nothing to do with Lawwell.
It’s all very well moaning about bargain basement…but that’s where we are…we’ll need to get used to it.

Sorry, the above was just a light hearted comment on a dark day. But, if you believe that Pukki, Balde, Boerrigter et al were purchases by Lennon, then you are mistaken. Park is Lawwell’s pal and what he says goes, a kind of Auto Suggestion if you like. Lennon was always travelling to watch players in the past, but over the last couple of years that diminished.
I for one am not shouting for large sums of money to be spent, but they should have had a striker with reasonable ability brought to the club before the season started, or certainly before the Maribor game. Though you could have Messi, Ronaldo and Costa on the books and it wouldn’t make one iota of a difference with a manager that is currently leading us on a downward spiral.
I’ll say it again, the team that Lennon left, wasn’t a bad side, but this guy has destroyed it in a matter of weeks.

Andy,
You may have connections and know more than I do….but..
Lawwell has stated on 3 separate interviews in the last 2 months…that the MANAGER has the FINAL SAY on all comings and goings…so maybe him and Parks do “collude”..but he’s adamant that the Manager is responsible.
He repeated it just the other day.
I just happen to believe him on that one…and whether it’s Lenny’s fault or Park’s fault…is immaterial.
all I know is…we’ve wasted a shitload of money on useless players…and it has to stop.

This current side is one of the worst Celtic teams I have ever seen, no passion no pattern to the play, no leadership on the park I could go on.As for that imposter Berget words fail me, whoever scouted that dud should be shown the door, I reckon I’m a better player and I am nearly three times his age

timbuffy

The team is going backwards at an alarming rate and, with no signs of improvement on the horizon, there is now the genuine possibility that we could end up losing the league. And that would be a major disaster with Champions League payments almost doubling next season. That makes the title and group stage qualification an absolute must – there can be no excuses. But yet another long drawn-out transfer target ends with the player treating us like shite on the sole of his shoe. It does not augur well. Incidentally why do Celtic’s transfer dealings always take so long?

RD’s system, if there is one does not work period. We have just watched Maribor, Inverness caley and Dundee play counter attacking football to great effect. the system seams to be, get the forward player to run themselves ragged as the first line of defence, once the opposition by pass this stand by and watch until the opposition get to the edge of the box then panic. when we get the ball because they have hit it wide or Gordon has saved us again, pass the ball across the park a few times until we have given the opposition time to get organised and then try to pass through gaps that don’t exist. as the game runs it’s course make the sideways passing quicker and try to look frantic. If we can keep the opposition outside or box and stop them from getting a chance,(Maribor) then sub a couple of players to help their midfield get control.

I am not a football manager, just a supporter like the rest of you, however you can’t argue that this assessment is not accurate. Just watch the games for evidence.

Just come back from a great break with no internet, but had TV. Unfortunately.
A few things are becoming very apparent.
1) The “system” and the players don’t align. Fast passing, high pressing, attacking at speed was Ronny’s mantra. Who could argue, it sounds great. However we don’t have players capable of playing like this, and I was saying this before the wheels started coming off
2) Ronny talked of evolution not revolution, but everything feels like it is in flux, and as others have said he has managed to take a squad that didn’t lose a league game til March or April last year and a defence that set a clean sheet record and make them look absolutely shite collectively and as individuals
3) He talks a lot and mostly its nonsense. E.g. Evolution not revolution, no loan deals, no one else leaving, we will be better this time etc etc
4) The players aren’t playing for him. No passion, no leaders no pride, just a sense of drifting through games
5) He has a questionable eye for a player and what they can do. Stokes isn’t a lone striker, Ambrose isn’t an effective right back, Berget isn’t a footballer
6) The board aren’t 100% on him either and are offering little to no financial support. Perhaps time will prove this a mistake or wise as based on the loans he has got in none are looking too good.
7) We can forget about any quality signings coming in. Bargain basement or nowt

Kayal has been better of late, but that is just a sad statement on how woeful everyone else has been. Mc Gregor has been a success but they are the only slight positives I can see.

We will win the league, as no other team can sustain a run of wins an organised and motivated Celtic team can, but is Ronny the man to motivate and organise these players? So far it looks very doubtful but I think you’ve got to give him until the new year and hopefully still be in with a shout of the league and see some signs of his “system” gelling.

Devoy45

We’ll win the League, with or without Deila. I would rather it be with him. I think we can win the League by a big margin with what we have. They just need to play in position. Skoosh and wee Forrest will make a helluva difference. Stokes and Griffiths should play together, just in front of Commons. Van Dijk will be sold today because he refused to play against Dundee. Ronny is playing mind games with the clubs seeking Van Dijk to up the ante by £2 million or so. Canny. How can anybody get excited by bringing new players coming in? Bangura, Balde, Pukki, Lassad, Miku. I’m glad I don’t have to send Strachan, Lenny or even Saint Martin to Lidl for my messages! Who bought these guys and why? I or any Tim on this website could play the current team in proper position and win. How? Because we know what the current batch can and can’t do. It’s simple. Let the players play. I see players but nobody can show me a “system.” Ronny, relax. Listen to us, let them play. Beautiful football is winning football and that sometimes means simply winning. What’s beautiful about losing 6-1 or drawing 1-1? A long pass is still a pass. Long ball is just one tool. My age of Celtic fan is used to cavalier attacking style most of the time. Even Barca can’t do that all of the time. Lawwell or Desmond are mostly not part of the equation. Too early to froth at the mouth just yet. When old Devoy throws in the towell then you can worry. The fat lady’s no even warming her vocal chords. In fact, she’s no even fat yet…

You can’t blame him … he was signing on the understanding there would be CL football to supplement the Scottish pish …

Just had a look at the new batch of Celtic signings. Lawell must be laughing his head off.

reality check required by Celtic fans!
we can’t afford to spend £5 million on a player
we can’t afford to offer wages greater than £20,000 per week
there is no money in Scottish football – the CL money & money from transfers is what keeps us afloat.
We need to find a way to develop our own players & develop a system that works both in Scotland & Europe.
PL has the best intersts of Celtic in mind – he is looking after the club and ensuring we don’t go the way of rangers & rangers2.
Van Gaal has spent massively at Man Utd, a team already filled with superstars and he is struggling to get the team to play to his system (which I imagine won’t be too different from Deila’s). If it takes world class players time to adapt, why would you imagine it would be any different for ours?
never seen so much negativity on this site.
KTF and back the team.
p.s. I wonder how many of the fans on here who say I’m not going back until so and so leaves actually attend Celtic matches or have done so recently?
