Celtic Diary Saturday August 2 : That Was Some Game In 67

Common sense has prevailed at Celtic with manager Ronny Deila opting to keep all the first team in Glasgow-bar Efe Ambrose , Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde, ahead of next weeks assault on Polish side Legia Warsaw.

The rest of them, under the watchful eye of his number two John Collins, are in Helsinki to face Tottenham in a friendly which is available on Celtic TV and wherever else you can find it later on.

Celtic have played Tottenham a number of times over the years, but none come close to matching the 3-3 draw at Hampden in august 1967 for quality, in front of an incredible 91,000 fans;

‘NOT SO MUCH A FRIENDLY……..MORE OF A CLASSIC!’

Glasgow Celtic 3 Tottenham Hotspur 3

Jimmy Greaves opened the scoring after thirty seconds which was an early indication of what was to come. Celtic were ahead by the 20th minute as they played some of the classic, cultured football which had brought the previous season’s European success. Celtic were now in control but Spurs came back strongly in the last fifteen minutes of the half and Alan Gilzean had them level before half-time. Greaves restored Tottenham’s lead four minutes after the interval but Celtic pulled them back again on the hour. Pat Jennings had an uncomfortable afternoon having difficulty with Celtic’s powerful shooting from distance and questions could be asked about all of the goals that he conceded.

In a barnstorming finish, Celtic should have won the game in the last twenty minutes as they hit the post, hit the bar and saw a goal bound shot hit Cyril Knowles on the head and rebound to safety.

Thats from a Spurs website, taken from a newspaper of the time, and theres a highlights video here…

Tottenham v Celtic 1967

Assistant boss Collins , who yesterday claimed Celtic wouldn’t make any panic buys in the wake of the Warsaw collapse, explained the reasons for taking a shadow squad to Finland;

“This is squeezed between the two big games so it wouldn’t have been wise to bring the first team out.

“They’re resting and preparing for Wednesday.”

And he showed a wee bit of support for his beleagured chief as well, which was nice;

“I don’t think you can write any manager off after one game.

“I know how hysterical people can be but Ronny will be fine, don’t worry.”

ronny and jonny

Looking ahead to the return, and the task involved, Collins continued;

“It was a disappointment of course but It’s only half-time,We have goalscorers in the team and I’m sure we will create plenty chances and we just have to take them and keep it tight at the back. It will be a different ball game at home.

“The home fans will get behind us, and if we get an early goal it will light up the stadium and give us energy – that’s the target.

An early goal ? Like in the first game ?

“It’s been done many times and hopefully it can be done again. That’s the target. We have to think positive. We know we can play better and we have good players and goalscorers.

“We don’t need any extra motivation. We have to turn around a 4-1 deficit. The players know what is at stake, so do we.

“They will go there and give it everything – I have no doubt that they will give it absolutely everything we have got. If we play as well as we are capable of then we will create chances.

“We have all been in situations where matches haven’t gone our way, but as a manager, coach or player you look forward to the next game and try and put it right.

“First and foremost we are looking forward to today’s game and Wednesday where we will look to put in a good performance and get a result.

“We have to dust ourselves down and get ready for Wednesday. We know it’s a big task but with a good support cheering us on – which we know will happen – we have to respond to that, come out the blocks, play at a high tempo and put them under pressure.”

Collins then moved his attention to the game today, and made it clear that it was a chance for the young lads involved to stake a claim for the first team;

“It’s a big game, we have a young squad and all the young boys are excited to be here and play against Spurs,” he said. “We will take the positive view from the game – they will be getting great experience against a top team and that’s the challenge.

“It’s an opportunity for the young players to show me and the manager that they are ready for the first team. There won’t be any motivation required from a team talk.

“As soon as they step out on the pitch and see their opponents they will be fired up. It’s about believing in themselves and having no fear. This is how you learn your trade – against good players and good teams, and I’m looking forward to seeing the young boys in action.”

“The senior players will also be important in helping the young boys through the early stages of the match,”

 I can’t shake this feeling that Deila and Collins have an attitude of superiority towards the players, and have adopted a schoolteacher mentality. Its good that the players are being allowed to rest ahead of Wednesday, but theres no need to overdo the training.

 Surely just telling them that they got us into this mess, so they need to get us out of it should be incentive enough ? You treat people like kids, and thats how they’ll behave.

Such as when Leigh Griffiths was showing off his new trainers.

leigh griffiths trainers

Which gives the papers something to harp on about. Well, something else to harp on about.

 New signing Jo Inge Berget hasn’t gone to Finland. Despite only playing a couple of times in the last few years he obviously needs a rest as well. Its too early to judge him, and too unfair to criticise him, but maybe save him for the crucial upcoming League Cup games, and not the pressure of the Murrayfield encounter.

 Former Celtic keeper Artur Boruc is a surprise target for Bayern Munich, who are seeking a deputy for World Cup winner Manuel Neuer , which in turn would open up a position for Fraser Forster, should he choose to have Southampton as his next employer. Southampton, not the first people to find after a summer break that someone from Liverpool is away with all their valuables, seem to be confident of getting their man.

 They need to. The last time so many people left that place the boat hit an iceberg.

 With several players reportedly restless, Deilas task on Wednesday is even harder. Does he use players who appear to have chucked it ? Or does he begin the rebuilding process that will be inevitable this year anyway ?

And thats the saddest thing. Just a couple of years ago we looked like we had a squad that was going places. They have indeed gone places, but not the same ones.

 If Celtic want to be a big club on the park as well as off it, rewards for loyalty need to take precedence over transfer fees. If we lose a top player, we need to bring in similar quality, or at least as close to it as we can. The object must be to continually improve the team, not steadily weaken it.

Otherwise, we won’t be a big club off the park either.

The Sevco board may get away with treating their fans as fools, basically because they are, but if this CELTIC board think they can get away with it much longer at Parkhead then their in for a big shock. Wise up LAWELL before a half empty CELTIC PARK is a common thing.HAIL HAIL.

Me? Keeping The Faith so I am. Have to, cannot allow ourselves to despair but there is a lot of work to be done with the team. The club could do us all a favour and do something to lift us up.

I was at that game vs Spurs and still have the prog.

Collins talks a load of shit,it,s happened many times before,what has a team coming back from a 3 goal deficit after the first leg,no it bloody well has not,wont be rushed into panic buys,ffs the windows been open more than a month,and not a proper signing,and were talking to second rate oufit about selling our goalie,they should have told to fuck off,and given they have a better goalie in Boruc can,t understand why they would wan,t to bring in another one

Chris

If we don’t turn around the three goals we are basically fucked this year we will sell Two maybe three players and not replace them( unless you count Gordon as a replacement). The boards plan has been clear for years qualify and then we will buy but not before..so why is this a surprise to anyone?… And what can be done about it fuck all!, I hope for a miracle on Wednesday but I won’t hold my breath….no qualification for the champions league will mean a long hard mind numbing season.

Why is Derk not getting a chance , surely he is Taylor made as an attacking winger for delia’s formation. I think griffiths is a big loss to, he like Derk has pace and will run all day.

Wise up ronny , we don’t want another idealist like Mowbray, get the job done then think about fancy football

Just heard we were beat 6-1 in Helsinki. I know it means not a lot in the bigger challenges we face and the team was a generally a very inexperienced one but it still makes my stomach sink. Hate getting beat, hate it.

As long as we are ahead of Rangers and the bank balance is in the black, the Board are happy. The fans will start voting with their feet and the gate figures will have to be massaged again this season to project the facade of a big successful club.”You can fool all of the people some of the time etc…” Be warned Celtic, if we fall too far, we won’t find it so easy to regain lost ground. The standard of players we will need won’t want to join a third rate team with no ambition.

Absolutely scandalous to put the youngsters through the mill in Helsinki today. I have lost my love of Celtic, or should I say Lawwells 11.
This just shows you that the powers that be don’t give a fuck about the team on the park.
I can see us struggling to win the league this season as I hear that Ronny & Johnny have lost the dressing room already.

London Celtic – what exactly is a farce? Like all Celtic fans I want to see us compete in and win every game, however not at the expense of losing the club. We live in fiscal times, that mean we have to cut our cloth. What exactly do you want to see being done? 6 million pound players, with the associated wages? We can’t afford that. Do I want to see our best players being sold, not at all. However, the board must make professional decisions, not decisions made by fans. I was in Torino 18 months ago and DD was being praised to the roof when he walked into the bar. What’s changed? Hooper indicated that he wanted to go, he went. Wanyama indicated that he wanted to go, he went and we were compensated appropriately I think. Is the squad good enough this year, probably not. Do you remember lennon failing miserably in Europe his first year? what’s different? Was he given the time cause he was a celtic man? As a group we are inpatient, RD and the board need time to organise. Was Lennon pushed? My feeling, it was time for him to go. He made the same mistakes in big games & wasn’t able to change it and forgive me if I’m wrong, he bought Pukki, Balde and Boaeriggter or was that the boards fault too?

‘You’re going to reap, just what you sow…….’

And there it is. No player investment in years!! The choice of a ‘rookie’ manager with no European experience (because his salary is low and his demands to sign players are the same).

Deals for players hoping they can get back into the game (cos they are free!). Loan signings of unheard of players.

The result (and performance) the other night was almost inevitable. Too many players want out for the reasons above and the ones who don’t want out aren’t good enough to play at the level we want them to.

Sadly, I will be stunned if we get even a whiff of overcoming the polish side next week – without Scott Brown (my first choice every week) our midfield is non existent. We have no real quality going forward and our defence is errrmm, lets say, not great. Our only hope is a huge, noisy crowd – then a reasonably early goal, followed by a penalty award (with red card included!) etc. I just can’t see it.

Defeat will lead to three or four more players leaving to be replaced by young bhoys or prospects/loanees. We will win the league by a significantly reduced margin and if the huns return next season (boooakkk!) we will more or less be on an even playing field in terms of first team quality.

10 in a row !! Reap what you sow………

Thanks Peter

think Collins is a mistake as a no2, think ur man Ronnie is Norways Mogga & it was a mistake to appoint him. Think 2-1 down going on 4 with 10 mins to go & with 10 men you close the game down and say 2-1 no bad that will do us. What you don’t do is give away to late gaols because you are to open. We do not have a striker of any real quality that was evident in the CL last year.

this year is very important as the new forces of darkness might be in the SPL next year we have to be ready for that witha strong foundation.

we are destroying thoses foundations and it is a celtic boards hall mark to rest on their laurals and to throw away a position of strength I have seen them do it numerous times.It does not even surprise me now.
PL gets far to much cash for being a CEO of a company with a small turnover.He needs to work harder for his money

9 years ago

I think everyone feels the same except PL. In my opinion we will struggle in the league this year with the school boy tactics who new manager is trying to adopt. Teams like Aberdeen and Dundee Unt will have a field day against us. Worrying times ahaed.

Really enjoy the blog! Some really spot on posts.Couldn’t agree more with celticfan67. You reap what you sow. For too long there has been a lack of investment in the team and as long as things are ticking over we have swallowed it. No doubt Lawell will dress it up by saying we have invested in this player or that player. He seems to be more concerned with his balance sheet than investing for the future. Jimbo was right ‘NOT GOOD ENOUGH’.

We’ve lost 10 (ten) goals in the last two games. Does anyone know when, if ever, this last happened to Celtic?

Devoy45

Relax. Forget Helsinki. If we lose to Legia then we aren’t good enough to play Juve or Barca. The Europa League is probably our standard, so let’s do this: win SPL, win Treble, win Europa League. We don’t need any fresh players but need to get the best out of what we have. We can’t afford any top tier players anyway.

By the way, vote YES so we can protect ourselves against nuclear arsenals,illegal wars, UKIP, Bedroom and poll taxes, BNP, etc. We could also engage interationally with whoever we choose. Vote NO if you don’t believe in democracy and just lurv being controlled by public school w******s. C’mon Celtic.

Real Madrid, who’ve just won the CL,have spent close to £200 million on players.
Liverpool, who almost won the EPL have spent over £100 million on players.
Does anyone think Celtic spending £6 million on a player would turn us into challengers? Even if PL opened the cheque book and gave Ronnie £20 million to spend, we still wouldn’t be anywhere near the class of Real / Barcelona / Man City etc etc. The only way we will compete is if we rear our own and get a manager who knows how to get the best out of what we have – I’m hoping Ronnie’s the man.
I love CL nights and I’m still hoping that we can make it into the group stages again, but if it’s the Europa league, that’ll do me as well.
Time to get behind the boss and the team – get your ticket for Murrayfield and get behind the team.

the list of shite that our management has payed good money on is a long one. Instead of 3 duds on dudline day, one good player would do me.

I agree with Andy. I’m afraid that playing in the Scottish league puts us at a major disadvantage. We cannot compete on the economics of the big leagues and running the club into debt to try may even threaten our existence. The research over time shows that the clubs with the biggest budgets win the leagues with the occasional hiccup like Athletico Madrid. Question is how can we make sure that we dominate the domestic game and have enough funding to have forays into Europe CL and/or Europa and stay in the hunt till after Christmas. In after Christmad then you never know. I’m hoping that boath Board and manager have a plan. If so I’d like to hear it

Devoy45

Part of the magic of supporting is Celtic is hope. I’m older than most of you guys and know that money can’t buy certain things but good things happen from time to time. We need to keep good players and pay them enough to stay for a while. Let’s see what happens. After Wednesday, we can take it from there. I urged that Mogga be given time. That backfired. But Lennon needed time too. Remember Henrik’s crap start? Got to stand by Deila for now. I think he has something good that Mowbray didn’t have.

celtsfan67
9 years ago

Henrik’s ‘crap’ start lasted about 180 minutes!!!

Hope is gone guys – look at the squad – take a moment or two please.

Now look at our best eleven. Yes – that’s our best eleven!!!

Previous post mentioned winning the Europa League – wow…. truly incredible statement. Our current squad wouldn’t qualify from any reasonable EL group.

Sadly this season is already over in terms of europe and any major excitement. Crowds will be vastly reduced….embarassingly so.

I’ve followed celtic for 35 years. Ive seen the really dismal teams of the 90’s where top quality players like mcstay and collins won next to nothing for years cos they were surrounded by dross. Sadly we dont have a mcstay or collins these days!

Woe is me. I pray for a miracle in midweek but I cant see who will provide the spark. No Brown(our top player by a mile!), no glass winger, no meaningful striker and a defence that cant defend. Added to that a man called Charlie Mulgrew who thinks he’s Charlie Tully! Even the keeper looks average these days.

We are reaping what we’ve sown – and if you are buying into the Lawell concept of rearing our own, then you will have to wait four or five years to see the fruits of that. In the meantime we have to suck it up and forget any meaningful participation in Europe, forget 10 in a row, forget glamour nights, huge crowds etc. Then, finally in four or five years time if and when a crop of youngsters are produced – what do you think we will do with them? That’s right – they will be punted to england and beyond and we will be stuck with a piss poor squad for eternity!
