Celtic Diary Thursday August 22

Charlie Mulgrew became the latest player to try to convince himself and us that the crowd will be the clinching factor in next Wednesdays ” Lets see if we can score against the Khazak diddies this time ” European clash.

“The crowd will get right behind us and we will really need to go for them. ”

small crowd

Speaking yesterday as the players skulked back into Scotland, Charlie called for inspiration from the partisan Celtic Park crowd. Without ever considering that he and his well paid professional colleagues might consider doing a little bit themselves to inspire us. I’m still amazed that the players got a lift back from Khazakstan, they should have been told to make their own way, but would have probably all stood in a line at the border, with no-one daring to venture forward.

Its a two way thing. Supporters , whether they watch on tv, listen on the radio or interweb, or attend the games, plan their lives-and their finances-around these games. We need to be inspired too, and frankly, watching Celtic on Tuesday would have had me flicking through the channels if I hadn’t already flung the remote at the dog, who had walked in front of the telly, causing Fraser Forster to hesistate on his line.

Neil Lennon also had a few things to say to those of us who saw the spectre of Artmedia Bratislava appear in our living rooms;

“It was far, far better than Bratislava. We didn’t create anything that game in Bratislava, yet we missed simple chances in Kazakhstan. ”

“We scored four against Bratislava in the second leg at home remember and we’re capable of doing that this time as well. ”

Er, yes we did, and no we aren’t.

Aiden Mcgeadys missed open goal springs immediately to mind-I still have nightmares about that, but thankfully his agent left it off the video when flogging him to Moscow Spartak.

And four goals, in one game ? With quite possibly the most ineffective front line since General Haigs repeated attempts to walk slowly towards the Germans ?

Its not new players we need, its new thinking.

Yesterdays diary prompted quite a few replies, which were all interesting and thought provoking, unlike the article that was at the top of the page, and most people were saying the same thing.

The players aren’t very good, and the manager needs to have a look at himself as well.

Perhaps it would be a good thing for this team to spend a season in the Europa League, to learn how to play together and so on. But that was what last season was supposed to be all about, and frankly, if this policy of selling any player who attracts the slightest interest continues, then we will forever be moving backwards.

The success on the park is what matters. No-one wants to end up like that club from Ibrox, but they brought their demise on themselves, so forget about telling ourselves how well Lawwell is doing keeping the club afloat.

Theres a great article which makes you think on the Etims Facebook page, by James Forrest, who questions Lawwells performance. Well worth a look.

everything is broken .

He also did a follow up, as the original prompted great debate;

good for the soul

The transfer window will remain open for a couple of weeks yet, but its starting to look like we are going to go with what we have. Teemu Pukki played as a substitute for Schalke last night, which effectively means he won’t play for us in that tournament, thus removing the reason for signing him.

John Park has reportedly decided that Alfred Finnbogasson is not worth £5m , despite scoring by the bucket load for whoever he plays for, and now attention has turned to Innocent Emeghera, the Swiss international who has scored 7 in 17 Serie A games.

I’m starting to think that Celtic don’t actually want to spend any money on quality, prefering instead to rummage around at metaphorical car boot sales, looking for that rare Elvis album that can be dusted off and sold to someone who can’t be arsed looking for it themselves, but has plenty of spare cash lying around .

Still, at least it gives the press something to harp on about. Stewart Fisher in the Herald takes a different angle, though, reminding us that the children will suffer;

” Qualify against the Kazakh champions and the under-19 players at Lennoxtown will benefit from an exclusive invitation to the inaugural running of the UEFA Youth League. Fail to do so, and with last week’s news that the NextGen Series is to be suspended for at least a year, the most exacting challenge the club’s youngsters will face is 12 months of humdrum Under-20 league and SFA Youth Cup matches, with perhaps the odd development friendly with a Barclays Premier League side thrown in. ”

Cheers for that. Constructive and inspiring.

Still, no matter how bad things feel for us Tims, its important to laugh at those worse off than ourselves.

Having ignored the comedy tribute to First Rangers now performing weekly at a little town near you, its time for a quick recap on the latest events down in darkest Govan.

Charles Green has “severed his ties ” with the club, having decided to step down after he was accused of putting unfair pressure on rookie boss Ally Mccoist, when the Yorkshireman pointed out that it was about time that McCoist started to justify his salary. By actually winning something against teams that play football , like Second Rangers, as their main job.

Green has promised to sell the rest of his shares to the Easdales, which is no surprise.

This from Companies house today;

” Charles Green holds 0 current appointment, has resigned from 30 companies and held appointments at 9 dissolved companies. Charles is not registered as holding any current appointments.

The combined cash at bank value for all of Charles’s current businesses is £0, with a combined assets value of £0 and liabilities of £0. Roles associated with Charles Green within the recorded businesses include: Director, Company Secretary ”

Which I thought was odd.

Perhaps someone who knows about these things could enlighten me.  I thought he had a number of posts at Ibrox…

Then there is the Ian Black fiasco. The media is full of people offering to help those with a gambling addiction, its full of those asking for the rules to be clarified.

Actually, they are quite clear for players…

” Disciplinary Rule 22 (Rule 33 in updated Judicial Panel Protocol for season 2013/14):

No club, official, Team Official or other member of Team Staff, player, match official or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA shall bet in any way on a football match (except authorised and registered football pools).”

Struggling see which bit needs clarified, unless Black is the stereotypical less than average intelligent footballer.

Ah, the answer is in the question..

Artur Boruc  ( Art, ben Hur, Bore ( Craig Brown) and itch ) was the answer yesterday, as if anyone cares. Today, work this one out from yesteryear.

You might find a knowledge of the Persian Achaemenid Empire useful, as well as a liking for childish American humour. Which to be fair, would make you an extremely disturbed individual.

Jees “area 111”!!! I am becoming shit scared of the place. It sounds like an American internment camp for aliens or a lab for nuclear experiments. When I went to Parkhead, it was nothing more scary than like being crammed in a cowshed. How things change :).

Pukki playing last night doesn’t cup tie him so not sure why that would end our interest in him.

In no way, shape or form does it “looks like we are going with what we have”.

He’s not cup-tied even if we both go through.

18.07 As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, but not UEFA Super Cup) for more than one club in the course of the same season. Exceptionally, however, a player who has been fielded in the first, second, third qualifying round or the play-offs of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League is entitled to play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another club as from the group stage.

Well researched. It is just a pity it probably won’t matter one way or t’other.

‘We didn’t create anything that game in Bratislava, yet we missed simple chances in Kazakhstan’.

Not so. Either Lenny’s trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes or he’s got a very bad memory. How can he forget McGeady’s incredible miss when at 2-0 down he somehow managed to put the ball over the bar when practically standing on the goal-line!?

Do us all a favour, Lenny – we’re not stupid.

Maybe we are. After all, we keep thinking we are better than we really are. But then, that’s being a football supporter, eh!

I suspect we may find ourselves alternating between the CL & the Europa League each season as we continually have to rebuild after selling players. Ajax have been doing this for a while – they seem to be on a CL/EL cycle at the moment as they are only getting two seasons out of their better players before punting them and having to start again.
Perhaps we should be doing our transfers in January instead of in the summer? With no serious challenge for the league, it would allow time to adjust to the changes in the first team instead of pitching the new guys straight in to the CL qualifiers.

BTW; I still think we will go through. 4-0 next week.

It was reported a while back (somewhere in mediaville)that Lenny said we are prepared to go as high as £5m fot the right player but that it’s dependent on moving a few on….
This was of course prior to ROGNE,McCOURT,LASSAD,MIKU(On Loan),WANYAMA,HOOPER and WILSON being “moved on” for an amount over and above £20m.
So far we have seen Mouyokolo ,Virgil,Amido come in for less than £6m.
As of yet no direct replacement for either the £12m+ Wanyama or indeed £5m+ Hooper?
Now either someone was at it to sell SB’s or Uncle Scrooge has been telling porkies to Neil Lennon?
I gather they want £5m for Finnbogason…what’s the hold up Peter the Hooper money covers that gamble.

Listen, you can’t praise the Club for adopting a specific recruitment policy , which has proven fruitful (mostly!) then simultaneously slag them off for applying said policy. This has been the first batch of proper selling/buying since we decided to follow thi s path and it has yet to be seen as a success.

Vic took 6 months to get a game and only held that after Kayal got blootered by McChulloch , Hooper had some bad some barren spells and Wilson only had 1 good season.

Patience is a virtue and i believe we will prevail next week, but on current form, i don’t have much hope got the groups!

Like you Ralph I think they will score and I don’t think we are capable of scoring three never mind four. We played some nice football at times last season but have failed to impress this.

It’s fine keeping possession and playing across the park and backward, the opposition will love you for it. The squad is stale with no real completion for most places. IMHO the best game this season was against Liverpool and that was the young bhoys. At least they gave it their all.

My heart tells me we will win by enough to qualify for the CL, my head is a mess, buts it always has been.

It looked likey that the 3 top players would be leaving this summer and the 2 Dutch players brought in as replacements are not up to it at the moment .Why?. The money from last year’s champions league was not used to blend in the right players. The English clubs wanted the players and paid the cash.Remember when we qualified and then sold Miller to Derby!
Please, please do not sign another player or loan any hasbeens, lets get on with the job. Also when Crotia Zabreb put us out we then signed signed Vidka!
If we don’t make the CL the cash from the transfers will tide us over. If we do Lawwell and Lennon- heroes yet again! I’m afraid our season is down to one game on Wednesday night and if forrest gump is selected go and watch Elgin City.

I wish all these players would do their talking on the park !
Why couldn’t they have done all they say at the first time of asking.
I’m reminded of the old adage” don’t worry about the guy who threatens you, worry about the guy who just does it !!”
Maybe a wee bit of reverse physcology might work better ; keep telling them we’ve got no chance ( which might just be the case anyway) and give a bit more commitment than we did in the first game.
Expect the worst and hope for the best !

wanyama took a while to bed in – I remember his first game at CP = a pre-season friendly and he was so bad I thought we’d signed a real turkey.
Wilson was absolutely shocking in his 1st season – he improved in his 2nd season and was arguably our best defender, however, was anyone really convinced in him?
hooper, I thought was always consistent, but he wanted away and his contract was up at the end of the season.

McCourt, rogne, miku & lassad (& bangura) were fringe players, at best
we’ve signed 4 replacements – van dyck, boeriggter, balde & muoykolo – they all need bedding in and need the fans to get behind them – I reckon they will be as good as the departed lot given time.
last week was dreadful, but we can still turn it around – keep the faith

Andy Virgil and Mouyokolo are straight replacements for Rogne (overrated and Injury prone) and Wilson (quick but crap at heading) I think both will be an improvement myself and as you say need time to settle.(Virgil more so methinks still a bit raw).
Boerrigter is the winger we have been screaming for as Forrest is hit and miss most weeks and Sammy needs help.
Amido is the target man we have not had since Big Jan but is no replacement for any of the 3 departing strikers ie Hooper,Lassad or Miku.
Neither Hooper or Wanyama have been replaced and In my opinion we need cover at Left Back for hit and miss Izzy.
We need to replace Hooper with a bonafide 20-30 goal a Season seasoned frontman not another project who may or may not turn out to be the next Larsson in 3 years.
Finnbogason ticks all the boxes,he has experience in 3 European leagues and is banging them in regularly in Holland.
We do need a creative Midfielder no to way’s about it.Someone like Lubo who can unlock a stubborn defence in once pass.
These types cost money.
We have money…lot’s of it..time to spend some for a wee change.
