Celtic Diary Monday March 29: Putting Things Back Together

It’s not even Easter, and with the league already gone, the work behind the scenes at Celtic Park continues to erase the memory of what , when taken into historical context, was an almighty balls up.

The biggest single shareholder, Dermot Desmond, sent his men in to have a look at what went wrong, and so far, the fallout has been astonishing in both its speed and it’s ruthlessness.

Gone are the CEO, the manager and the long serving captain.

You get the feeling that someone was a little bit pissed off with the way things have gone this season, and the main man isn;t even hanging around to see if there’s a consolation cup to be paraded.

Whatever excuses were offered up haven’t washed, and heads have rolled.

Peter Lawwell had his own way of doing things, a way which had kept the club stable financially, successful on the pitch and , under his watchful eye, very watchful eye, navigated some of the storms that had come the way of the game in general.

If you don’t count the demise of Rangers, that is.

Well respected by his peers, he holds positions throughout Europe and his opinion is sought by those in positions of power and influence. In fairness, though, Hugh Dallas and Campbell Ogilvie have also wormed their way into such positions, and they seem to have done a little more for their club than Lawwell did for ours.

Rumours of clashes with managers over budgets and other issues refused to go away, and there may be yet more on the head to head that saw Brendan Rodgers leave for Leicester a couple of years ago, which at the time surprised everyone at the club, even though there were signs the Irishman wasn’t overly happy in his working relationship with the CEO.

On that occasion, Desmond went with Lawwell when it came down to it, and thats how things work in business. Lawwell wanted ad got the backing of his gaffer, and because by and large Desmond was happy with his CEO, he got his way.

But the cracks had appeared, and were prised apart when Lawwell vetoed Roy Keane as a replacement for the underperforming Neil Lennon, and from that moment Lawwell started to look at retirement brochures.

Which were sent to him from Dublin…

All of this , of course, is speculation, but it does kind of make sense, (that’s a first-Ed )

With Lawwell out of the way, the scene is set for Keane to take up the job of manager, a scenario that dawned at Lennoxtown when the players and staff saw him mildly declare on Sky tv that “Celtic are a great club and will bounce back “.

In itself, not a revealing moment, but when you consider Keane once raged at Celtic players for celebrating qualification to the Champions League group stages , those at the ranch saw it as confirmation that anything else you hear about Eddie Howe, Geoffrey Howe or Geoffrey from Rainbow, is complete bollocks.

Keane is coming, and Desmond has, as ever, got his way.

Scott Brown is a modern day legend, there’s no disputing that. indeed, he should be lauded for his commitment and achievements as Celtic captain, and rightly so.

Along with another modern day legend, Neil Lennon, these two have decided that their futures lie elsewhere.

Both have proven that they are winners, both have earned their status among the great names to have served and graced the hoops.

But both of them found last season, which in reality was little more than a tv show with added studio applause, a step too far. Neither could adapt, and mistakes, costly mistakes , were made.

The biggest mistake was in repeating tactics with players that clearly weren;t working, and the stubborn refusal to make the necessary changes when they had to be made.

Yes, there were some pretty serious mitigating factors, the plague took its toll, and whilst most clubs adhered to the rukes, one in particular ignored them, and has been seen to reap the benefits.

Lennon did speak out, but his voice isn’t loud enough to be heard where it needs to be heard, and even having said that, he spoke too late, as the damage was already done.

Brown could have played a bigger part on the field, and as to whether it’s simply down to the restrictions of Father Time or other circumstances that are to blame, we’ll have to wait and see. Both seem likely, but again, with his experience and influence, we expected more.

He’s leaving though, with his reputation intact, and that is the least he deserves.

He’ll never be on the list of McGrory, McNeill, Lennox, Johnstone , McStay or Larsson, but then again, the list of those who have seen such players is growing smaller by the day, and for many Brown is as close to that statusย  as they’ll ever see.

The unusual circumstances of last season have allowed the decade old basket of assets to win their first major trophy, a scenario that the law of averages said was always going to happen, but thats not how things are seen from a business point of view.

Celtic invested heavily, if not wisely in players last summer, and the accusations of mismanagement won;t go away. not only was money spent, key players were retained and there can be no excuse for the collapse that followed. Even with several players absentย  at different periods for one reason or another, there should have been enough strength in depth to at least take the season to the wire.

We couldn’t even take it to Easter, and thats unacceptable to a billionaire businessman.

The first steps have been taken, the old guard has gone.

And , if the pish stained drunks are right, the new man has already been appointed.

Roy Keane has no equal as a “big name ” player.

He was the heartbeat of a very successful Manchester United side under Alex Ferguson that will pribably be the last footballing empire to be built from within.

Although under Solskjaer, youth was beginning to get a chance again, with Nicky Butt, a former Keane team mate developing youngsters such as Marcus Rashford, and it’s significant that Butt has now left Old Trafford, and may well join Keane in the new set up.

Damien Duff is no longer coaching Ireland, and he , too, might be a part of what we have been told is a major revolution in not only the way things are being done, but who is doing them at Lennoxtown.

A return to the standards set by Brendan ridgers is deemed essential, as some see the lack of professionalism tolerated by Lennon as a major factor this season, and the lack of sharpness on the field is an obvious indicator.

Factor in that its a couple of months since Celtic scored in the second half of a match, and it doesn;t take a sports scientist to see what the problem is.

Butt and Duff could be the men to put Celtic back into the 21st century, and Butt’s success with youngsters fits the model of attracting ambitious kids to Celtic , who can then be sold on….

Duff is a more modern coach than the three laps of the track and off to the pub mentality that had crept back in recently, and the players will greet his arrival, should that come around, with enthusiasm.

But hang on, Roy Keane as manager ? He’s a dinosaur,ย  right ?

Shout, shout and shout some more ?

He;s won nothing at Middlesborough and wherever else he went, though the clubs he was at, barring Ipswich under Bobby Robson and Alf Ramsay won nothing under any of their managers.

Hardly a failure, but he isn’t being hired for his tactical genius….that will be the job of his coaching staff.

Keane is being hired to call out those in Scottish football who interpret the rules in their own novel and refreshing way.

“rangers ” are getting away with flouting the rules again, and the SFA are letting them do it.

And they will keep leting them do it unless someone stands up to them.

Keane is not one for doffing his cap.

He keeps razor blades in his……

The failures of those who have left will be addressed.

And if those who drink super strength lager whilst walking their devil dogs are to be believed, this is how we are going to address them.

One thing is certain, it won’t be dull, and I wouldn’t give that season book up just yet.

Roy Keane would be box office stuff at Celtic, especially if his coaching team & assistants are of a high level.
I took note when Martin O’ Neill said ” Roy has everything to take a big job on “, i respect Martin O’Neill and his opinions.

at least you are not stupid enough to think he is grown up enough to go at it on his own.

I would prefer if someone got him a “bat-a-ball” and he can play with it, on his own, in the box office.

Gosh Raplh usually I rate your opinion but I think your analysis may be a bit of the mark today, we shall see. On Broonie I wonder if ten years down the line he may fit more easily into the list of legends you rightly laud.
I think Celtic have not seen the last of Scot Brown but I believe he needs to go away to develop his coaching skills.I don’t know if Leighth Griffiths will join him at Aberdeen and if their fans can cope but their visit to Ibroke will be good value!

This is going to divide opinion. You need only look at all the fan sites to see half of us saying we’d take Keane and the other half saying he’s not the right fit for us. On the plus side, he would not accept any excuses or failure to give 100 percent. He would expect players to train hard and go into games very fit. He wouldn’t roll over and take any nonsense from the ‘peepul’. And the players would be nervous about letting him down or failing in standards. On the down side, could he curb some of his temperament because let’s face it, football is different now from even 20 years ago and managers have had to adapt too. Could he avoid bearing grudges to any player who stepped out of line etc (one journeyman at Middlesborough moaned about being barked at then ignored until he left).
However, there are 2 great stories – when goram was briefly at Man U, Keane refused to shake his hand and goram said he would just stare straight through him, giving him daggers for the whole time he was there. And there was more to that comment about us being a great club. Remember, he was asked if he was going to congratulate therangers and souness was sitting there smugly. So Keane’s response was very clever as well as apt. He point blank ignored therangers by saying he wouldn’t congratulate them but by also saying we were a great club, he was giving souness a proverbial slap across the chops by countering his infamous men against boys quote. That’s why he had a little smirk after he said it and souness wriggled uncomfortably in his seat. Those 2 incidents are a big indication of something much bigger than management skills……

Does the new manager ‘get it’? – does he know how important it is we win regularly, play great football and continue to grow? And the answer is yes, Roy very much does.

But that said, we are in a modern game against modern coaches, particularly in Europe. And to get success there as well as being champions at home, who would be the best fit? I think it’s still between Keane, Howe, maybe Marsch and maybe Maresca, although he has went quiet lately. Depends how much say Harkin has in the appointment. I think Marsch is just wrong timing – great manager but not quite ready to jump ship. Maresca, perhaps not. So Howe or Keane? Which one would Harkin and McKay (and Desmond) all agree on? Because as long as those 3 are in agreement it doesn’t matter what any other director chips in with.

Might be worth googling if Harkin knows Howe or Keane from the past or ever crossed paths because Fergal will be a post Easter bunny gift announcement and it will swiftly follow with a managerial one

Roy Keane, not for me and another sign the board has no imagination. We need a forward thinking coach. Keane is a dinosaur and we would have been better sticking with Lenny, at least he was relatively cheap. Howe or Marsh would be a much better fit, IMO.

Would I be happy with Roy Keane? A tentative yes would be the answer based on a few boxes being ticked. Number 1 would be that we have excellent coaches who are tactical aware and can improve the players so the teamโ€™s performances are greater than the sum of their parts. Number 2 would be that we had a short/medium and long term strategy for where the club and team with key performances indicators so we can see how we are performing against those targets/ambitions! Another tick in the box for me would be that he would stand up for the club/team/players against the shit that we have had to deal with over the past years. The last person to do that I think was BR when Scott Brown was sent off and the club appealed. At the appeal BR highlighted a whole lot of similar tackles/infringements that were not punished by the referees and the case was thrown out. I want the questions that need to be asked fairly and squarely! Couple of downsides, 1. he is possibly not the most political of operators who would call it out as and when he believes there is an issue eg the time he called out the ManU player which eventually led to him leaving. We was probably right but we all know that there is a time and a place. We need everyone to be part of this and all pulling in the right direction together and 2. If he doesnโ€™t like how he is going he may just up and leave and we are back to square 1. He would certainly bring back the thunder as someone once said!

When Scottish football started to play their ‘better together’ card, for me it destroyed my enjoyment of Celtic FC. How could you possibly read a Scottish newspaper without squirming at the level of denial from Scottish journalist’s. Why would you switch on the BBC and watch ‘Sports sound’, without your ears bleeding listening to the EBT commentators. Sky was always.. Sky, in that I had resorted to turning the volume off as I tried to watch my team play, the succulent lambs pathetic attempts at commentary was gruesome, it too was ditched years ago. Translate – gate was a side product of its Hun bias. Around 80% of Scottish football supporters income belong to the ‘Tic and the Huns, good for them, but gutting for us. Going solo, was a strong possibility when the share price rose in their absence, with direct access into the CL Qualifiers. We did all of that during their forced absence. Lawwell said that it cost our club around ยฃ10.00 million, when they died, but CL qualification made up for that and more. The Huns need to hold onto our coattails, we don’t need them, other Scottish clubs might, but not us. They and their support are the embarrassment and we too suffer because of being tied to them. Going solo for me, is much more appealing, that’s how it should be….

Skys Translate-gate really pissed me off. It should’ ve resulted in a massive law suit. But like resolution12 and title stripping our board done zilch.
Lawwell gets pelters , justifiably, but the wee scrote of a chairman should’ve been high profile in condemning such. I don ‘ t care if its not in his job description he should ve been shouting from the f@@@ing roof tops.

I had already ditched Sky before Translate – gate, but it did cross my mind to re-apply, then cancel during the cooling off process, just to get back at them.

Tyrone, The studio cushions are filled with commentators who either had tried to manage a football club, and failed, or, had never managed a football club. Keane for me is in the former, I ask myself, why did he not do it before when he was offered the job? I do like the mans courage and fighting spirit, but, he has been out of football management for over a decade. As my auld mum used to say, aim high. We critisised the board for appointing Lennon in the showers without due diligence, so we must give them time to get it right.

Reply to  Tyrone9

The Bankier line that got me at AGM video event in December was he had looked at PLs role raised in respnsev to shareholders questions iro Celtic’s response to Res11 and said PL had acted in the Company’s interest.

Somewhere between December and now someone does not agree, which makes DD’s support for Bankier puzzling, either he doesnt know what PL did in the Company’s interest or he agrees with Bankier.
What is needed is a challenge to DD’s support for the Board and the only tactical weapon of choice as opposed to long term strategy is the CST using the proven route of AGM Resolutions with a supporting case that Celtic have to respond to in order to justify how they then vote.

The ambition of DD and his muppets are boundless. The last time Lenny left it was Roy of the Rovers and Delilah, he knocked it back, we got Delilah. On that basis he is nowhere near a first choice as Manager.
Currently the board and DD have made a proverbial of it, allowing the zombies to rise again. What is needed is a quality manager that can attract good young players, not a. Has been, or are they still dreaming of the blue pound.
Not give the season book up just yet Ralphie, they have to try harder as many fans are scunnered and want the rebels back, at least the bunnet and Dempsey had fight.

There’s one thing you can say for sure about Roy Keane…if he had been Celtic manager during these last few year or so, he would have called out the refs for always being “unsighted” when Celtic players were being assaulted on the pitch, he would have asked the SFA why Celtic and Aberdeen got punished for players breaking Covid rules while the*rangers got “praised” for “acting swiftly”, he would have called the press out for their total bias in favour of one team and their sleekit attempts to undermine Celtic at every turn with any anti-Celtic story that they could find e.g. “Ex-Celtic player Charlie Mulgrew filmed celebrating with others during lockdown” ffs. As for wee Nicola he’d be kicking her door in (figuratively speaking) demanding that she explain why she lambasted Celtic and Aberdeen but did the square root of f*ck all about what was going on at Ibrox. Let’s be honest, our club officials are either too scared to call out what goes on in Masonland or they’re too busy counting their shekals to care.
If Keane gets the job I’ll give him a fair chance to let the above guilty party’s know that he won’t shirk from calling out ineptness, injustice and or corruption where he sees it. Interesting times could be ahead!!

1st post on this site so Hello to all.

A few weeks ago I heard the rumour that Scott Brown was to go to Aberdeen as assistant to Stephen Glass. I dismissed is as mince put out by agents of the dark forces trying to take the pesh – then bingo it’s officially announced that he’s going to wear a red shirt next season.

Sooo when I heard about Keane & Butt being the new team for us I was and remain a little more cautious about dismissing it as tabloid nonsense.

Going back to Brown though it seems that there are some scenarios that can be punted about his leaving, after all Scott has been helping coach some of the youth teams at Celtic for the past 2 season & has taken some of his coaching badges. It would seem that coaching at Celtic was an easy fit if he remained at the club.

  • Does he now precisely who is to be the new Celtic coach & that this new man will not want any of the old guard to coach under his regime. Meaning that Scotts coaching ambitions could only be met if he left Celtic.
  • Again if he knows who the new man is gong to be did Scott do a quick risk assessment a nd decide that he personally couldn’t work with this person without one of them being at risk?
  • Did Scott simply decide that he wanted to learn more about coaching away from Celtic regardless of who was going to be the new coach, so that he might one day return as head coach leading his own coaching team?

I don’t know if the speculation about Roy Keane is informed or invented but I do read some things in the leader today that make sense. Modern managers/head coaches seem much more involved in fronting up clubs on so many levels & allowing their assistants etc to get on with the business of day to day coaching. Roy Keane has worked under three top men who operated this way – Clough, Ferguson & O’Neil – so I suspect that this is the role that he would want to replicate at Celtic.

Further, the inclusion of Damien Duff makes it a much more attractive package for me. His reputation is astonishingly high for someone who was only part of the coaching staff at Celtic for 12 months. Nicky Butt is an interesting nomination too – Keane, Butt & Duff…..

Personally, I want to see a restructuring at Celtic so that we are set up more professionally in comparison with other clubs that we see as direct competitors (not in Scotland). So a Director of Football or whatever title is allocated to him/her setting up the football department dedicated to merit appointments, recruiting excellence & development of resources. Under that system the identity of the Head Coach is important but does not become the only lynchpin in the continued success of the club. Every time in the past that we have changed managers, there’s been such anxiety and waste amongst our playing staff as players try to work out if they’re going to fit in with the new man’s style or tactics on the field.

Now wonder Dermot gets annoyed – recruiting 10 managers in 20 years & more than half of them lasted just 12 months means waste of money & talent.

Anyway, I have no problem with Roy Keane. He’ll be aware of the cobwebs at CP & I can’t imagine that he won’t be given a sharp knife & a big broom to clear out dead wood that drag the place down & have obstructed change for years.

He has to hit the ground running with recruitment & player talks his primary task to prep for July’s CL qualies. The new CEO, Director of Football & Coach will know the clock is ticking even before they sit down for their first meeting.

If Ajer can be persuaded to stay – he should be the new captain. Callum’s a good player & a fine man but not an on field captain based on what I’ve seen this season.

Happy Monday to all.

It’s all too little too late.
10 in a row would have killed off sevco, they gambled everything and it paid off. Lenny failed.
When you think back to the bolingoli escapade Lenny gave the team a few days off ffs we had just started back. If he had kept them upto scratch that wouldn’t have happened we lost 3 games to the fiasco. Then off to Dubai we still had a chance to turn it around but again punished by covid and had to play mostly a reserve team.
Lenny fucked up big time assisted by Lawwell and whoever is in charge of recruitment has to go also. Barkas Ajeti when we could have had Marshall and Toney.
It’s been the worst season ever only saved by a young goalkeeper in a cup final penalty shoot out against a team from the lower division.
The huns will only get better we have let the dead rise.

It was apparent yesterday that no-one so far has been appointed the new Celtic manager and certainly not Roy Keane. If he had been ‘the chosen one’ then why did MON hit all the studios yesterday to talk him up? If its a facing up to the referees and those who talk us down kinda manager that you are looking for, then why not go the whole hog and appoint the legendary boxer Steve Collins as our new manager. Neil Lennon spoke up all the time for the players and the club, but he too was heavily critisised for his lack of managerial talent, tactical nouse etc.and so would Roy Keane if he becomes our new manager. It’s not the ‘talk back, stare down’ manager that we want (although that adds to his persona) no, its someone with tactical and player picking talent that we need. We need someone with reputational presence, who will enhance the Celtic team home and in Europe. We need the best that we can get, that’s the whole point of Neil Lennons leaving.

Many things have been written about this season, reasons offered, excuses peddled and who is to blame for tho most unforgivable collapse in decades from a Celtic side.
From the board sleeping at the wheel, Bolingoli on holiday mode, unfit players, clueless in the dugout & poor recruitment, all of that is to blame & throw in a bit of Covid 19 just for the feel good factor.

The most important thing to me in any given season, in any given year is the quality & standard of the player who heads out the home dressing room, down the tunnel and onto the hallowed turf of paradise.
Directors? Share price? Disco lights?
Food halls? ( oh ok keep the food halls just lower the prices ), museums, hotels etc….no, it’s about the TEAM & those who manage, teach & motivate it.
What i have seen this season is an unmotivated, spineless, leaderless group of players, lacking in defensive awareness & a dropping of standards that is both baffling & completely unacceptable, no shape to the team, goalkeepers frequently changing, comedic performances in defence where heading a ball is not an option.
Maybe our defenders are studying the links between heading the ball & dementia & decided as a group to not apply heading this season?

There is no doubt that the modern player is a snowflake who if you ask a bit loudly to ” is there any chance you can maybe try a little harder ” will sulk, ask for a transfer & keep asking for a transfer, you listening Mr Ntcham?

In my humble opinion, Roy Keane is not going to be warmly greeted by the snowflakes, the non triers, the want awayers, that to me is exactly what Celtic need, a change of mentality, a team that doesn’t give in ( remember the famous Celtic spirit )? A goal down with ten mins to go & we still win? Remember that bhoys & ghirls?
Keane being in the job for me isn’t because he’s a Celtic supporter or Irish or despises the Huns ( all good attributes tho ) no, it’s because he epitomizes the personification of Celtic fighting spirit, hard as nails, never give in, focused, leader, warrior & an example of how to lead men.
Now i agree when some might say ” that was as a player though ” that would be fair enough but i refuse to believe that this man who has learned from Brian Clough & Alex Ferguson, hasn’t the knowledge to invigorate Celtic.
I also think it’s worth raising who his coaches would be, this would help with the players understanding Keane’s demands.
Remember St.Martin wasn’t huge on the training ground, but his motivational skills were top class, i think Roy Keane could be the same.

There are managers out there who would be less of a risk than Roy & maybe a better option, but what is being debated here is can Roy Keane lead Celtic & give us a team to be proud of? A small part of me is unsure but overall i would be nervously excited about it.

Roy Keane has Celtic in his blood, read his autobiography.

It’s Keano’s time Bhoys!
