Celtic Diary Thursday September 17: Season Taking Shape ?

Todays theme is shape.

Defined by the dictionary as…oh, hang on, someone has nicked mine.

I’m lost for words.

Celtic overcame a stuffy St Mirren with a stuffy performance in Paisley last night. I have to confess it was the first game I’ve managed to watch in a while, so it’s difficult to say if there has been any progress on the pitch.

Shane Duffy certainly makes a difference from set pieces, although he looks to be a little short on fitness.  Either that or he is hyperventilating with excitement at wearing the hoops.  Even at this early stage though, this is a man that should be persuaded to stay at Celtic, I’ve a feeling he has much more to offer than a solid presence at the back, and an even more solid one up front front.

A sort of cross between Billy McNeill and Roy Aitken ? Maybe I’m going over the top there, but if and when the season reaches the business end, he’ll be someone who carves his name into history.

He scored the equaliser after the Paisley men opened the scoring early on, and there was a sense , probably for the first time since the halcyon days of Shunsuke Nakamura , that when Celts get a set piece, there is actually a chance something might happen.

His header from a corner settled the side a little, and when James Forrest had a wee sit down to find the ball skiting off his head into the top corner , Celts were in front, and never looked like losing.

Did anyone else hear Scott Brown yell “fucking hell ” as the ball hit the net ?

There was yet another great performance in the opposition goal as the forwards continued to struggle with the idea of putting the ball where the keeper isn’t standing, including a dreadful penalty kick from Oddsone Edouard, which made all the pre match complaning from Saints manager jim Goodwin somewhat redundant, but the most interesting thing to my mind was happening in the Celtic goal.

Our Greek custodian doesn’t like to lift his arms much, in the way some keepers do to make their presence felt. He has more of a last defender look about him, and contrary to popular belief is very, very confident in his ability to do that. that confidence is evident in the other players, who use him as a sort of pivot to change the direction of play.

Not that the team has any sort of shape to it, although that could simply be down to watching on television, which always distorts a game and things like shape and formation.

Image

A few weeks ago on our podcast it was noted that we always have a moan this time of year, probably due to European underachievement, about how the season ahead looks, and for the last decade the results and titles have proved us wrong.

It’s worth remembering for all the talk of a challenge, and all the panic when it looked like “rangers ” would go eleven points clear after Celtic had two games postponed, and yet here we are in a position to go to the top of the table this Saturday, and should it transpire that “rangers ” drop points at Easter Road on Sunday, Celtic will be clear, with a game in hand….

Image

But there are still one or two tiny niggles…if I can use that word without upsetting anyone…and it’s still difficult to pin them down to anything specific, and it might just be our own nerves, our own unease at not being allowed to go to the games to see for ourselves, or even the constant exposure to less reasoned  opinion on social media and various forums…including this one.

Not being able to go to the games is affecting us, but perhaps in a subliminal way.

Neil Lennon thinks it is affecting the players as well….

“It’s difficult because there are no supporters. I think it’s really difficult for them, especially at a big club like ours, but they are adapting to the environment as well as anyone.

“You get a head of steam up in a game and normally you get the atmosphere crackling. It gives the players a lift and there is none of that at the minute.

“So there is a bit of adaptation, no question subconsciously that is a big miss for them.”

On BBC Alba last night, they showed the Jock Stein documentary, and they used this quote to illustrate how the great man felt about supporters….

YNWA" The LFC Story on Twitter: "Why are Man U fans trying to take a Jock Stein quote and make it their own? Yes, Matt Busby was a brilliant manager, but so

As ever, he knew what he was talking about, and maybe we should all remember that this is an unusual season, and these are unusual games in unusual settings.

Meanwhile, Knob of the Week made a return last Thursday because, and not for the first time, I got my days all mixed up.

However, some knobs shine too brightly to ignore, and so yet again on a Thursday we’ve found someone who takes knobberry to new heights….

“rangers ” are in Europa League action tonight where they face Lincoln Red Imps, who recorded a win over Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic that sort of set the tone for most away European games under the Antrim Ego, and there is every chance that the Gibraltans will repeat the feat tonight.

Their manager, William Amarel,  is in no doubt about the task ahead of him, although someone should have out him right..

“We know we’re playing against the best team in Scotland, against the best manager in Scotland.

“They are ranked first in the league with a record of no goals conceded. We know who we’re facing. For Gibraltar, it’s a massive game.

“But it’s just one leg so we have a very good chance. We need to show a lot of courage and be motivated.

“This is why football is special – moments like this when a big team plays a small team.

“The small team can do it with courage and passion. These things do happen when small teams beat the big one. The coverage the team gets through the media.”

But hang on, is he a knob, or is he playing very , very good mind games….small teams against big teams…is he reminding us that “rangers ” are less than a decade old and it is they who have a chance of pulling off a shock ?

After all, they are getting somewhat ridiculous press coverage, including this nonsense from the Sun

RANGERS are staying on a luxury £120m superyacht in Gibraltar ahead of their clash with Lincoln Red Imps.

The Light Blues are taking it easy in their luxurious surroundings after arriving in the British overseas territory yesterday.

Sunborn superyacht in Gibraltar

And SunSport has taken a look at what the five-star accommodation on board the Sunborn looks like inside.

Located in Gibraltar’s promenade, the superyacht boasts a hotel and casino on board, as well as 189 rooms across seven floors.

Rooms come with a variety of amenities including balconies, white marble bathrooms in their executive suites and even living areas in their apartments and penthouse cabins.

You can book a single night’s stay on Sunborn’s website for as little as £181, depending on your room and board options.

There is even a doctor on board, and he’ll be needed to asses the damage done to Alfredo Morelos, seen here in training with a plaster on his wound , the one picked up after a Dundee United player attacked him and left him bleeding in a heap.

Image
Morelos will have to undergo a late fitness test, but fingers crossed, eh ?
Which reminds me, Hugh Keevins tweeted last night a question that showed a little more about Radio clyde editorial policy than he probably intended to, but at his age he probably forgets a lot of things, such as sporting integrity, honesty and that his mother warned him about hanging around with bigots….
hugh keevins
@shinjukushug
When they say Ajer is worth 20 million, which currency are we talking about!
Same fucking currency as you and your pocket sash basher claim the fat Colombian above is worth …yet somehow you forget to question that opinion, largely because you’ve been told to promote it….
Elsewhere, and in a new feature to the Diary, we’re going to offer our services to our underfunded and underappreciated police force, who have asked us to help find the accomplices of this man, who rode into the Gallowgate last night with his pals, blatantly ignoring the rule of six….
Image
On Monday, we offered this for your consideration….

After the latest poor performance against St Mirren, I cannot shake the feeling that something is just not right at Celtic Park. Is it fallout from the Boli affair, Karamoko, Griffiths or something else.? The body language of some players doesn’t look right. I gave my sseason ticket up 10 years ago ( before all the cheating and corruption came to light) for a whole host of reasons and I’ve never been back to Celtic Park. I really feel for the tens of thousands of supporters who have shelled out hundreds of pounds for season tickets to watch such poor fare.

Have u no heard of the rule of six?

Last night three points in the bank, but a woeful game of football. When will Lenny look at shape and realise that going through the middle of a packed defence is a no no.
That’s why both goals were headers, as for Taylor, there is a big question mark there.
Hopefully as players get fitter we will improve,

“His header from a corner settled the side a little”

Free kick, not a corner. Excellent delivery from Christie, as was his delivery from open play to Forrest for the winner.

‘Todays theme is shape’.
Squares and Compasses and wearing the wife’s apron and letting your fingers do the talking.

Its the reporting of the MSSM. that gets me, I.E.
Frank Mulholland who’s favourite player was Jimmy Johnstone.
DCI. Robertson, who is a lifelong *Rangers supporter. ( a short life then).
My shape is expanding up to 12 stone now of, cockles and mussel’s, still alive, alive oh!
As for the team? well strange times and we must give them time to gel, like James Forrest’s barnet formula. KTF.

We were very much in control of the game last night against a very compact defence. The signing of Duffy has just saved us 2 points already in a campaign which is our most difficult challenge.
Also a nice little earner for me 9/2 to score anytime. Its a must bhoys and girls.
Ajer is too good to be a centre back.
His instinct is to force the play and not the positional sense of a traditional centre back.
Please please someone from Celtic coaching staff try him at centre mid instead of Broony he is a 20 million pound + player being wasted in my opinion.
Hugh is just the same as the rest when they come out with that shite.
Stopped listening to clyde a very long time ago.
The 3rd goal would have made it easier viewing but the goalie saved it,Eddy getting a bit of stick but you get games like that during a season. He never hid it just didnt happen.
2-1 is never easy especially with our defense but they never really threatened and a hard 3 points won. Some header Jamesy its why he should always be in the team a guy who scores the important goals even when he is struggling out on the wing.
Get the scoring boots on at the weekend and lay down the marker.
COYBIG.

You get games like this over a season. The games where football is not the most important thing but victory is everything.
We shouldnt forget the burden thats on our players for this season.
I’m in a way glad that our supporters aren’t in the stadium yes we can drive a team on but we can be equally vocal when things aren’t to our liking some of our players would probably have put in transfer requests after what I’ve read from so called supporters last night and today.
We were in control the 3rd goal would have made it easier it wasn’t to be. 3 points won and big Duffy and Jamesy with 2 brilliant headers to win the match. Over the season you look back on games and say yes that one at St Mirren was huge.
Oh and Duffy 9/2 to score anytime get in

How long has he been missing inaction, 115 days and counting?

All down to his own unprofessional and disruptive behaviour.

If Lennon rehabilitates him yet again and this leads to disharmony in the squad and he has another vital ‘week aff’ then he only has himself to blame.

Get Klimala & Ajeti fit and playing regularly rather than a guy who consistently lets us down.

Cha,
I’m not convinced with Klimala m8, he’s up there with Greg Taylor in my opinion.
Having said that Klimala is at least available to the manager.

Always happy to get the points but when i seen the line up last night i had a sinking feeling.
Why change the 3-5-2 when players are trying to adjust to this formation?
Why play Klimali ( see Ralph ) cough, when he is third choice?
With Ajeti needing game time & endeavouring to forge an understanding/ partnership with Edouard, why would you leave Ajeti on the bench and go with Klimala?
Greg Taylor is NOT a Celtic first team player, he is back up at best, we need a left sided, left footed player in this area, Ryan Sessegnon would be fantastic but i don’t know if it’s realistic to get him.
We were spoiled with the ability & performance levels of Tierney, i have sympathy with Taylor trying to emulate him, not an easy job?
Why Frimpong one game Elhamed the other? It isn’t helping to create a settled defence?
It’s time to see a more regular midfield without Brown, he isn’t finished but we need fresh legs in midfield, McGregor, Ntcham & Christie should be the three with Turnbull forcing his way in eventually.
Too much tinkering, probably be down to a busy schedule coming up but we need to be more clinical & impressive than we were last night.

I agree that Klimala’s our 3rd choice striker but he still needs game time as well as Ajeti, who will probably start on Saturday.

Don’t think we’ve got a particularly busy schedule (Saturday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday (EL PO). We were due to play St Johnstone on the Friday, so presumably that’ll go back to the Sunday, if we don’t make a mess of EL Q3 next week.

I have sympathy for Taylor. He made some great runs last night and the ball was over hit or passed inside. I dont think he done much wrong and he never hides or shirks it. 30 million he isnt but who could replace Tierney not many in our budget range. Barkas another who has to fill the void of not only Forster but Gordon also. A near impossible task. Our great supporters will pick on players and Taylor will be the fall guy till jamesy gets it again.
Keevins is looking for Celtic supporters to respond. He is craving attention for his terrible phone in show which is in decline and has been for many years now. Simply don’t give him airtime ignore him its all about to get you to call in. Dont be sucked in like so many of our supporters seem to be these days. HH

Of course, that horrible period of our history when (checks notes) Invincible Treble, Double Treble and Treble Treble setup. Not forgetting the only twice we’ve qualified for the CL in the past 7 years.

Dreadful days and so glad to see the back of them.

‘Hold’ shouts Shane Duffy as he tells Kris Ajer and Elhamed to hold the same line.
‘Its Duffy’s’ shouts the Derry man as he bullets his header into the St. Mirren net.
Darren O’Dea tells of Shane Duffy’s serious life threatening injury when his liver was sliced open and he lost internally 4 litres of blood, leaving him with a large L’shaped scar. This took place in a behind doors game for the Republic in 2010, point being he reiterates the sheer bravery of the man from Derry and despite this serious injury when a young man, that bravery continues still, remarkable.
Home is where the heart is and Duffy is at his footballing home, Celtic. # Sell Lawwell, keep Duffy.

Estadio Nacional, Portugal’s Colosseum, where this time the Lions ate the Inerazzurri, playing for the 12th. European Cup. Bobby Lennox the fastest man on the park, ran the four minute mile to collect his teeth from Ronnie Simpsons bunnett, just before the racing crowds of Cellic supporters caught up with him. Turf ripped up, players jersey’s ripped, stripped, stretched and torn from their backs (whatever happened to the corner flag posts)?
