Celtic Diary February 27: Copenhagen, Channel 4 and Catch A Thief

The Europa League comes to town tonight and the Copenhagen game takes on a little more bite as new club/company “rangers ” overcame Braga to book their place in the last 16.

It would be unthinkable for that lot to advance further in the competition than Celtic.

Though we’re all thinking about that now.

By the way, at 1pm today on this site, we look into the behaviour of their travelling support, which featured the usual songbook on a catholic holiday in a catholic country. A step too far ?

In the meantime, have a think about this…

“rangers” quite possibly recorded their best ever result tonight. Well done. First time ever in the last 16 of a European tournament. Could they be the first team ever to win a major European trophy without ever winning a major domestic one?

Actually, no.

Bayer Leverkusen did it, so the tribute act look to be condemned to always being second as well….if they win it, of course, which they won’t.

but then again, they keep digging out the results….or maybe Scottish football is a little bit better than we thought.

It’s certainly better than we are constantly told…

I’d be happy for them, but as you will see at 1pm, I just cannot….

Scott Brown and James Forrest should start, although if there are any doubts about them, Lennon must make the difficult decision to leave them out as this is not the sort of game where we need early substituions or below par performances in the EFe ambrose style…remember when he got off a plane after a party that followed his country winning the African Nations Cup, and declared himself good to play against Juventus ?

It’s probably worth not telling Simunovic or Biton they’re playing until as late as possible either, that step down from the team bus can put unnecessary pressure on the ankles…

Celtic have seemed more comfortable in a flexible 3-5-2 of late, and with Greg Taylor, who is improving with every game on one side, and James Forrest on the other of a three man defence-any three that are fit, to be fair, as long as one of them is Julien, then that should make Forster, who will be a key player tonight, a little more confident.

He always looks happier with three in front of him.

There’s no Olivier Ntcham or Ryan Christie, so Brown, MacGregor and Rogic will start, with Brown MacGregor and probably Elyanoussi finishing,

Edoaurd , and if fit, Griffith will be handed the job of making any Copenhagen strikes irrelevant.

I’m expecting Celtic to win, but not expecting it to be easy, or dull.

As i’m leaving shortly (it’s 3am )  to spend the day in Renfrewshire  for a family funeral I may yet end up listening to it in the car on the way home tonight, and could do without any drama.

Belfast Celtic, our cousins over the water, had a connection with Copenhagen…

Elsewhere, and Alex Thomson produced his report on child abuse and how Scottish football is dealing with it, which was preceded by a statement from Celtic…

In light of recent speculation and to seek to avoid any confusion, the Club wishes to confirm its position regarding the historic abuse that took place at Celtic Football Club and Celtic Boys’ Club.  Celtic Football Club is appalled by any form of historic abuse and has great sympathy for those who suffered abuse and for their families. The Club is very sorry that these events took place. The abuse of young people is an abhorrent crime. Unfortunately it has affected many areas of society.

With regard to the allegations regarding historic abuse at Celtic Boys’ Club (which, so far as we have been made aware, relate to the period prior to 1997), although Celtic Football Club is a separate organisation, we take these extremely seriously because of the historic contacts between the two organisations. Police investigations were given support, so as to seek to ensure that those individuals who abused young people were brought to justice.

The Club has been at the leading edge in Scottish football of putting welfare and safeguarding protections in place for our young people and continues to work with Scottish football to make it a safe place for young people.

These are very sensitive matters. There are ongoing legal proceedings which prevent us from discussing any case in any detail. It would not be appropriate for the Club to comment in the media about any individuals or events.

In summary, these are historic issues, which the Club is dealing with in a responsible manner and in conjunction with its advisers. The Club reiterates its sincere sympathy, regret and sorrow for those affected. As we have said repeatedly, the Club will stand by its responsibilities, respecting the due process of law.

There really is little else they can do at this stage, and we’ll have to trust that they are dealing with it in a responsible manner.

They know what the right thing to do is, but they must do it for the right reasons, at the right time and in the right place, and not because the media and the rancid support of another club demands it.

Celtic hopefully are taking a lead on this, and if so, must do it the way they think is in the best interests of the victims.

A “rangers fan also made a statement, though it was. as you would expect, lacking in sympathy…

Image

Then again, with the trickle of nonsense growing to a flow from an Ibrox “insider “, it restores their feeling of superiority…

Image

Recently, a rare and coveted matchworn Celtic away top was stolen from a museum in Manchester.

This one…

Image

Image

It was worn by charlie nicholas, but dont let that put you off, in the 91-92 season, and it was this guy that took it…or at least the police want to talk to him about the possibility he took it..

Image

Image

Keep an eye out for it, Ebay, gum tree etc…no doubt it’ll be for sale somewhere, and if you see it, arrange to meet the guy, or get some kind of way of identifying it, and hand it to GMP.

Then kick his fucking head in.

But not while the police are watching, obviously.

In fact, don’t kick his head in.

Let them do it. They like that sort of thing.

Here’s a conundrum…..

Prior to last night’s game I expected Braga to thrash the new huns and put an end to a hugely important income stream. Well let’s just say I was wrong. The new huns could’ve won far more convincingly and it’s not because they are good. They’re not. Braga were fucking woeful to a man. The new huns goal should’ve been averted by a ‘keeper who stayed by his goal-line when he should’ve raced out and cleared the danger. Anyway, whatever has happened to Portuguese football is anyone’s guess but I wouldn’t fear anyone from that league. Maybe all their better players are plying their trade in other leagues but they sure as hell ain’t in Portugal. Tonight will be a stiffer test for us but if we play as we did 1st half against Copenhagen then we should take care of that comfortably.
End of day this season to me is ALL about the NINE and if we do that we’ll do the TEN and the new huns will implode if they haven’t already done so. I think the NINE will be the end of them and passionately hope so, never to be seen again.

This has got the makings of a cracking game. The absence of both Oli and Ryan seriously weakens our midfield but it also opens the door for big Tom to show his class and do something special. A young attacking midfielder like Henderson might make the bench alongside Nir Bitton. There’s just an outside chance that Hatem El Hammed could make the subs bench as well. Shved is not registered for the Euro squad so will miss out. This is one where we really have to go for the jugular early on with a non-stop attacking blitz and then control the game with no slip ups at the back.

Christie had a great game against Killie and is showing signs of getting back to his best. His energy in a game like tonight could have been a huge factor but Rogic still has a lot to offer. I just hope he can keep at it till the closing stages of the match. I think we should be ok on the night though.

Rebus67

Reply to  Yoker Bhoy

Yoker,

I agree we need an early goal to settle the nerves, even if it is only my own! My fear is that we blew it in the first half in Copenhagen. We should have beaten them in that 45 minutes but we squandered chances. Now this is exactly the situation that Copenhagen are used to….drawing or winning away from home. Ask Malmo, Lugano and Dynamo Kiev. They tend to get a goal away from home, so we need two at least tonight.

In the second half in Denmark, their midfield dominated and pushed us back into a defensive shell. Tonight our midfield may be weakened by the loss of one or both of Christie and Brown. Rogic is an enigma but certainly a creative force if he decides to pass the ball.

I’d go with Bauer rather than Frimpong, who seems to be going through a transition at the moment. He has either been told not to risk his dribbling skills and losing the ball, or his confidence has suffered from the mauling he typically gets. Plus his defensive qualities are still evolving….attackers tend to get on the goal side of him.

There is additional pressure because of the Braga result. It will be hard but we should be able to do it.

Afternoon Rebus, I missed the first leg because of the nasty early kick-off time and I had to work. This time I’ll get back just in the nick of time to see the whole game. I’d definitely go 3-5-2 as the Danes will then be under huge pressure to cope with our two strikers. Our players will be totally focussed on what they have to do and shouldn’t let the sevco result enter their thoughts. Enjoy the game to the full Rebus.

They fully deserved their win a workmanlike team with only a handball as a sole mistake. Not up for it down to the manager. There is losses in this team and the league isn’t a certainty. Lawell we need a class manager and at least four new players not fucking kids from Poland or the Ivory Coast. This is a wake up. I am disappointed as well but rarely have I seen a team disintegrate as quickly as we did after their first goal. There was no shape at all with several players chasing after the ball….just like an under 8’s team.

Sadly, the better team won, simply because they were a team.

We may well win 9 (not a certainty ) but if Lenny is still in place the 10 will be a pipe dream. Broony obviously nowhere near fit, Simunovic horrendous from the off. Solbakken far cleverer than his counterpart and had Calmac nullified throughout. He changed the formation because he got spooked after last weeks second half. Extremely poor decision making from manager and players.

Iancelt67

Not the right time to defend Lenny. He fucked our European campaign up due to a lack of due diligence on the opposition who have a remarkable resonance in not conceding away. He’s not the man to take us forward

Wasn’t ever confident about this second leg, yes we have the supposed comfort of being at home etc, but like i keep mentioning, the defence, Jullien apart, is a mess.
How many times does it have to be pointed out that Ajer isn’t a central defender?
Greg Taylor? FFS are we serious?

Simunovic should have gone years ago, he’s not fkn fit enough or good enough.
If we were going to a four, why not play Frimpong and keep Ajer beside Jullien?
I think Neil has got it wrong tonight, personnel wise if not formation.
I’m going to say this again, Greg Taylor is a Kilmarnock player, back up at best at Celtic.
Simunovic? Sorry Jozo, goodbye at the seasons end!
So many times tonight there was no fucking shape, Copenhagen started knocking it about like Molde.
The last goal we conceded tonight, keep watching Ajer’s attempts to ‘challenge’, then ask yourself if that is a central defender.
We have one good defender, Jullien.

I think you’ll find that his managerial abilities are extremely limited. Yes we qualified top of the group, but Europa league group matches can be very misleading. If we had lost the two games to Nazio we would have had no complaints. Nazio have had an eye on a more important competition from the beginning of this season. As I have said, his abilities in the domestic competitions are adequate, but in Europe and against average teams, his weaknesses are there for all to see.

Say what you like over both his tenures he’s doing better than many other managers of the modern era.

Like who? Jim Goodwin, Derek McInnes.
His appointment was Lawwell at his penny pinching best. Far too convenient and proof that the plc have no ambition to take the football club forward.

Just home from the game, doubt if Callum will ever contribute so little again, Broonie poor, they had done their homework on Eddy, snuffed him out. I am surprised Lenny took so long to make changes, Rogic fine in first half never kicked a ball in the second, defence the same ok in the first half went missing after 60 minutes. I am with Weered,10 IAR is a once in a lifetime opportunity, Europe we play in every season. Lenny and this group topped our Group stage. The Scottish media will love this but I am worried Forster will think £60k a week at West Ham or Norwich is better than this. It looked like a Rodgers European performance.

Jamsie had a couple of moments when he could’ve turned the game for us, but tonight was not his night. Of all the players to point a finger at, he should not be one.

Really beginning to hate this milksop site obsessed with res 12 and not addressing our immediate problems. Charlie saiz apologist Lennon comments and the new scrutiny of comments. Filtering things to make us look like idiots. Fuck Neil Lennon fuck his lack of ability to stand up to cunts who want to keep us mediocre

1) Is Greg Taylor a LB?
2) Is Simo considered consistent?
3) What exactly is our preferred formation?
4) Can we continue to play other formations?
5) Who the flock is going to replace Scott Brown 2 years ago?
6) Does progressing in Europe matter when going for 10 IAR?
7) Can we continue to be reactionary when selection tactics at half time or should we hire a chess master?

None of you chunts understand football.

Clearly Lenny had worked out that after the Huns qualifying last night then they would be playing before they played us in March.

Simples, we go out and have a free week to prepare to best the Huns.

That’s managerial genius.

CS, “Time some of you opened your eyes and perhaps learned about this game we all love.” Emotions will always run high after going out like that. I was drunk, but I’m sure I saw them targeting Simo and Greg Taylor from the off in the second half and they were struggling to handle it. That goal was always coming. Hence why I stated the change should’ve come sooner.

We didn’t have a good goal ruled out. You are an advocate of VAR. Did you not notice Jullien bump the goalkeeper and the fact the whistle blew before the ball hit the net. Your facts are somewhere up your shitehole.

Where do you start with all of that last night? Your emotions are all over the place. Anger, disappointment, knowing that you are going to have to suck it up once again. Emotional attachment, two words that say SFA. about how you feel. Another wasted opportunity, wasteful in front of goal, (over two games), another switcheroo in tactics, seasoned pro’s making basic errors, but hey, millions in the bank. Still buying projects at the lower level is a wastefulness of millions of pounds, the system is still failing. An accountant buying players, an appointment without due diligence. A fIcking shambles of a way to run the club. Angry doesn’t cover it, raging does.

Mike,
I’m disappointed because it was self inflicted, i don’t know why he played Ajer at RB to accommodate Simunovic?
Also he has changed formation to include Leigh Griffiths over the last two months, yet changes it on a massive night?
The team looked shapeless as one of my t- shirts.
No cohesion or quality, the attempts of Ajer to defend the third goal was utterly feeble, the guy needs to toughen the fuck up!

Monti

It wasn’t a ” good goal ” , the keeper was bumped, it’s a foul.
