Celtic Diary Tuesday February 25: Catch 22 For Lawwell

Big thanks to Timposter for his help on this

Imagine a world where your brand is damaged by the severest kind.

A world where said brand is falsely associated with RACISM.

A world where you vigourously set out to defend that brand…but you can’t.

Because you are compromised.

Now that would need some imagination.

Or would it?

Let us enter a world where a CEO demands full disclosure where the brand of his company has been subject to such an accusation, not only this but has irrefutable evidence that said accusation was made up.

Yes we are talking about Translategate,

Someone put words into someone elses subtitles to that effect.

Celtic PLC has a racist customer base.

Peter Lawless was quick off the mark when this occurred and demanded a full retraction, a full explanation as to how this occurred.

A full apology was made by Sky Sports but they refused to give any explanation as to the demand for full disclosure.

So Lawwell decided to refer them to OFCOM.

Finally, we thought, Peter Lawless is going to act on our behalf, as it was actually us the fans that were maliciously smeared.

So what happened?

The first sign of any weakness came when Celtic decided to allow interviews with Sky  Sports, despite Sky’s refusal to provide full disclosure.

Then last weekend we turn up on Soccer AM with a piece at Lennoxville.

Featuring two black players, which itself subliminally acknowledges the open to all policy of the club.

Still no full disclosure from Sky.

Then today we learn that OFCOM have refused to get involved, based on a technicality that no one has revealed.

Never mind Celtic can always sue. after all, if one was to examine the customer base, or as we call it, the support, there is plenty of evidence that they are not racist.

Thats befiore we look at the make up of the squad.

Peter Lawell surrendered to Sky, was it  because he knows that if we tried to sue their defence would be the fact that the PLC called us racists themselves ?

Irish Examiner…

Celtic chairman Ian Bankier described some Hoops fans’ online treatment of fellow director Lord Ian Livingston as ‘criminally racist’ at the club’s annual general meeting.

Livingston, a Conservative peer and former minister for trade and investment, recently voted in favour of the UK Government’s tax credit cuts policy in the House of Lords, which prompted a section of the Celtic support to start an online petition calling for his removal.

Almost 10,000 signed it but on the poll taken after the AGM, Livingston was re-appointed with 99.46 per cent of the votes cast while majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, Tom Allison and Brian Wilson were also re-appointed on a show of hands at the meeting.

One shareholder was given a rousing round of applause when he claimed Livingston’s “role in society is contrary to the ethos of the club”.

Bankier rounded on some of Glasgow-born Livingston’s critics but his parting comment on the issue – “I am very disappointed” – was met with calls of “shame” from some in the hall at Celtic Park.

Bankier claimed the former BT Group chief executive – whose full title is Lord Livingston of Parkhead – had been “subject to a torrent of utterly base personal abuse conducted over social media in recent weeks

Matthew Lindsay@MattLindsayHT

Celtic chairman Ian Bankier brands the “utterly base personal abuse” of Ian Livingston on social media as “criminally racist”.

Ewan Murray

@mrewanmurray

Not only is Bankier highly unimpressive, if Celtic fans feel strongly about Livingston then fair play to them. They’re allowed that stance.

Kieran Caw@Kieran_Celtic

If Bankier believes the abuse towards Ian Livingston was racist, he should provide evidence to the police. He won’t tho, because it wasn’t

“The messages posted, in quite a few cases, are criminally racist and in all cases the vocabulary chosen is base and highly abusive,” the Celtic chairman added.

“And what sickens me to the core is that the campaign is conducted in the name of (Celtic founder) Brother Walfrid.

Ian Livingston is a consummately able business executive. We are grateful that he is prepared to devote his time and considerable talents to the affairs of this club.

“The fact that he also happens to be a member of the House of Lords creates no conflict of interest with the business of Celtic.

“We are a football club. We play football – and we are good at it.

“Our fans come from every quarter of society and share the common bond of supporting the team.

“We are not a conduit for political statements and campaigns. No fan or section of fans has the right to set up a stall that proclaims political intolerance in the name of what they invariably cite as ’their’ club.

“Our club is not available to anyone for that purpose. I condemn this activity and appeal to you to see it for what it is, because intolerance soon leads to hatred and hatred leads to a lot worse as we well know.”

The Celtic board was again criticised by some shareholders for refusing to sign up as accredited living wage employers but Bankier said it was “not in the interests of the business or the club”.

Seems to me there’s a lot of things not in the best interest of the club these days. When I say club, of course, perhaps I really mean “company ”

So.

A Catch22 all of their own making.

We have a CEO who cannot sue for damages because he is complicit in damaging the brand of the club that he is CEO of.

Compromised.

Now where have we seen this before?

Who was it that asked the Res 12 requisitioners to find him a smoking gun and he would use it?

Now what did he do with this irrefutable evidence.

That’s right.

The square root of fuck all.

Could it be because he was compromised?

No, that would just be us being paranoid again….

Like we were when our jaws dropped when Lawwell  stated at the 2019 AGM that he had never read the 5 Way Agreement as we were aware he had been sent a copy-for approval ?

Via email.

As we have seen.

Compromised.

The racist accusation still stands.

It has never been rescinded or any apology offered to us.

Lawwell initially came out swinging to defend the brand, but then he realosed, or was told, that the board had said the same thing.

Where does that leave us ?

We have a Chief Executive and a board that cannot defend the brand against accusations of racism because…they’ve said the exact same thing themselves, which means that is what they believe.

On the other side of the city, we find amusement in a support that believes everything their board of directors tells them.

At least their owner /operator is honest about being a glib and shameless liar.

Yet we, when faced with a board that treats us entirely with contempt not only do nothing, but hand over millions of pounds year after year to this charlatan who calls us racists, lies to us and pockets an enormous, bonus laden salary.

For what ?

It’s no longer enough to point across the city and think of what could happen.

At the very least a CEO should be able to balance the books.

Yet again , we have to ask, exactly what are we getting for our money….and it is our money…from the man in the sharp suit ?

Yesterday we had this…

‘Then today we learn that OFCOM have refused to get involved, based on a technicality that no one has revealed’. My understanding is that as it was only played online and not broadcast on TV it is outwith their remit. A technicality but one which explains why children can watch fascists espouse hatred on Youtube uncensored while the geek that owns it decides the policies of nations.

Everybody and their granny (grannies play fitbaw tae) wants to beat the champions. But one of the understated good things about having a large pool of development players, some make it at Celtic, but most don’t. Is that they join other SPFL. clubs. Another is that with the largest pool of players in Scotland some go out to other SPFL. clubs on loan but cannot play against their parent club (Celtic). So that means when they play against the Huns they try even harder to beat them (Huns deserve to get beaten all the time, they dinny like it up them).
Celtic the greatest ever provider of Hun skelpers.

I see Steve Chalmers 1967 European cup winners medal is to go to auction.
As this legend scored the most important goal in the clubs unbroken history, i’d expect the club to buy this medal, then give it straight back to the Chalmers family!

I would agree with that, with one proviso, perhaps Steve’s family would like it to go into the clubs museum.
There’s another cracker going up for auction soon as well, a print of the Lions with the big cup, signed by each and everyone of the Lions, I think they signed it around 1994. What a brilliant piece to own. Magic.

Mike,
I feel the medal should be with the family first & foremost, however if it goes into the club museum, that would also be a nice touch.

Its a totally incredible collection of all of Steve’s football memorabilia including some of Stevies match worn jersey’s. It includes the jersey of Gianfranco Bedin of Inter, who he swapped jersey’s with. Pele’s jersey who he swapped jersey with after a Scotland game. Its a fabulous collection that all the family agreed to sell including his wife’ Sadie, “the time is right to let another football fan become custodian of Steve’s archive”. The auctioneers expect it to sell for £150,000- £250,000.

Reply to  Mike

Some collection that. It would be brilliant in the museum at Celtic park if the family agreed to it as you rightly say Monti would be nice if they keep it. I would eat grass first before I let them go. But the family have more treasured memories of their father than medals or shirts that money just cant buy.

It unbelievably that so called Celtic supporters prefer to ridicule the Celtic Board ,rather than praise & encourage our Celtic team during one of our more successful periods of our history .Our role as supporters is to help team , not to continue a barrage of ridicule & abuse against Board ,a campaign going on for decades & with absolute no success

The lies that this charlatan lawwell tells makes me physically sick as a celtic supporter for over 50 years, he has done nothing for celtic apart from line his pockets with millions and stock pile money for the rest of his cronies for dividends, celtic have won all these trophies in spite of him not because of him,he is nothing but a parasite, how he can walk past brother walfrids statue everyday without being embarrassed says everything about this individual.

The only way to get rid of corrupt, cowardly, deceitful, PLC Tories – is so simple…
Empty the park, or suck up PLC lies.
Empty the park till DD’s share value hits the floor, and then he’ll leave.
Then give the keys to, Jeanette Findlay, and let her recruit a hierarchy of, left wing socialist rebels, who won’t be mugged off, by cheap PLC punks.
Then the ghood ship Celtic will sail on! ✊

This is why the huns can’t fire him, and Celtic won’t follow up with translategate!

Lord Livingston expressed public views which were the opposite of what our Club stood for. He voted for legislation in sharp contrast to the charitable ethos of our club. Very clearly he was unable to continue as a director with opposing views to the clubs charitable philosophy. That is why Celtic supporters voiced their opinions on his role at Celtic. Nothing more nothing less. I think it was as surprise to all of us when his religion was mentioned and Bankier called anyone who disagreed with the Board on the matter “racist”. Shame on Bankier for that.

Tories do not espouse Celtic values, that said clubs that are properly run achieve their potential ; St Johnstone struggled initially but are achieving their level, Motherwell too, Aberdeen are struggling because they are going through change but ultimately will resume their position of natural third. Celtic are properly run and we achieve our level but the disconnect between the Board and the support needs addressed or ultimately we will fall. Dermot, Lawwell etc need to recognise the real danger to Celtic of their stand on Resolution 12, (or lack of it) and the club’s corporate decisions set against our traditional values. I am proud if my religion but it really has nothing to do with football, I respect people with different faiths or none, all I care is which team they support. Lenny great, Griff great,Eddy,( probably for just this season) great, Taylor improving, need I go in, Celtic properly run, with the caveats above, and reaching our potential.

Before this I’d no idea of the guy’s religion. This is how things are going now though. You can’t criticize the state of Israel without being accused of anti semitism now. Israel can murder Palestinians now and if you voice concern about it you’re a bigot and a holocaust denier?

Great diary today Ralph. And the subject matter cuts right to the heart of Celtic.
The disconnect between the board and the supporters is surely approaching an all time high.
I really don’t want guys like Lawell , Bankier and Desmond taking credit for the teams success.
It was done in spite of the efforts of the board. And when they come out to defend a board member they always mention the time these guys put in , and how lucky we are to have them. They don’t ever mention the salary and bonuses of these people , or what the going rate would be for that type of person.
Lawell taking out 3.5 million is disgusting in the context.
If any of these guys cant work for 50% less , then ship out. That means they are only here for the money , not the Club . That should be the first resolution for the next board meeting , alongside resolution 12.

BBC. Scotland still in denial, cannot mention the “L” word. Scottish football M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction. Egotistical drivel invaded by crooks, liars and Walter Mitty’ characters and that’s just the chairmen, all feeding on their ego’s, plundering money from honest working people.

“There is no Old Firm” but there was “Old Firmism”. Stephen O’Donnell’s “Tangled Up In Blue”, tells of collaboration on shared objectives before Harland @ Wolf. poured money into the Huns at the start of the twentieth century and poured sectarianism into Scottish football. In 1954 the Tricolour dispute when at the last vote when Celtic were to be voted out of Scottish football and along came Billy concerned that “Rangers” might miss out on the bigot pound. And then in- 1994 David Low who assisted Fergus’s takeover reveals astonishment at the old board holding 5000 shares in “Rangers”. Saw it myself in around 2000 “Rangers” crested paper cups being readied for the next game against them. Supporters would be astonished at the collaboration, maybe aye maybe naw.

Help, the paranoids are after me yet that’s how all Celtic fans must feel at times. We need to settle Resolution 12, we the fans need eventually to own Celtic Football Club, we need to call out the Orcs for current “financial irregularities”, we need to win 10 in a row to add to our illustrious history. finally we need to win on the pitch and our next match is Thursday night against Copenhagen. Firstly, we need to win it. The margin doesn’t matter although on form, we can blitz them. However, we must remember Cluj. 3-4-1-2
Forster
Ajer/Jullien/Simu
Forrest/Ntcham/McGregor/Taylor
Christie
Edouard/Griffiths
Assuming Broonie not fit. A cautious 2-1 to the Bhoys, winning aggregate 3-2.
I would be very surprised to see the Orcs survive in Portugal. At St. Johnstone on Sunday will be tougher up there than in the past. Good health to all on this site. I’ve just turned 70 but feel 90!LOL
