Celtic Diary Monday February 24: Spring Is In The Air

The relentless charge to nine in a row continued yesterday as Celtic overcame an early shock at home to Kilmarnock to pull together and complete a 3-1 win.

Eamon Brophy drew a penalty from Jozo Simunovic and converted the kick to give the Ayrshire side an early lead, but Kris Ajer, Oddsone Edoaurd and Leigh Griffiths put away three of the numerous chances created by the hoops to move 12 points clear with not many games to go.

Reluctantly, the BBC put up the league table…

And asked their elite team of pundits to comment…

Meanwhile, Celtic fans exiting the stadium and pubs yesterday had a certain spring in their step…

After the match, Neil Lennon, pictured above, had this to say…

Image result for fuck the huns

Then he spoke to the media..

“I don’t want to talk about titles. I just want to talk about the game.

“The title is a million miles away as far as we are concerned. We just want to concentrate on our affairs.

“Since the turn of the year we have been magnificent. The fact we have won 10 domestic games says my team is very good.

“I don’t want to keep going on about mentality and stuff, but we have some outstanding footballers.

“There was a lot of good football and the guys deserve a lot of credit.”

He’s good, isn’t he ?

Image

So, he talked about the game…

“The performance and the reaction to going a goal down pleased me most.

“I felt the first shouldn’t have counted as Brophy was offside when he got the ball.

“I’m delighted with them. Delighted with the quality and desire to get the ball back at times.

“I think this team is capable of creating good chances and has good belief in itself. There was a long way to go in the game and in the half, even, and I was absolutely thrilled to go in 2-1 up after the way we played in the last half-hour of the half.

“In the second half, we were outstanding and I think some of our football was simply irresistible at times.

“Kilmarnock are a good side and a difficult nut to crack, but we played very well, first of all from a sense of injustice from losing the goal.

“There was real controlled aggression after that.”

It does kind of look like Celtic are now in the home straight for the ninth successive title, an achievement that cannot be underestimated despite what the media will tell you.

A level of consistency that has been attained despite having to pay all the tax on players wages, and at no time did the club die, rise or have endless banners telling us that we will come again.

But wait…surely the SFA will do whatever it takes to stop this potentially historic moment from embedding itself in our memories ?

After all, they have put so much hard work into it so far, with blind eyes , deaf ears and, er, refreshing ideas on the rules of the game, both on and off the park…so they must have something up their sleeves…

My theory ?

My theory occurred to me yesterday when I saw this…

An Italian municipal information sign urging residents to read Ministry of Health advice regarding coronavirus

The BBC reported…

Inter Milan’s home game against Sampdoria is among four Serie A fixtures on Sunday postponed over fears of the spread of coronavirus.

The suspension was announced by Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte at a news conference on Saturday.

“Minister of Sport [Vincenzo] Spadafora intends to suspend all sporting events planned for Sunday in the Veneto and Lombardy regions,” Conte said.

Torino v Parma, Verona v Cagliari and Atalanta v Sassuolo are also suspended.

In a statement, European football’s governing body Uefa said it is “in touch with Inter and with local authorities on the matter and there is no further comment to be made at this stage”.

Even as I write this, the SFA will be in touch with Campbell Ogilvie, who has connections with UEFA, and no doubt they will be seeking a nod and a handshake that it will be okay to suspend all the Scottish league games until the threat of illness disappears.

Events years ago proved we weren’t paranoid enough, and as I draw the curtains in the living room to avoid anyone at the SFA looking over my shoulder and thinking ..

Image result for hey, that's a good idea

don’t be at all surprised if thats this weeks big story.

Then again, there’s already a story in the pipeline.

Alex Thomson may have a point, but he really should have widened his investigation and not used the Celtic support to sensationalise what is a sensitive and ongoing police investigation…

Above  a picture of Celtic Park, he tweeted last week ….

alex thomson

@alextomo

Famous for its noise. Now infamous for its silence. Is Scottish football dealing with its past paedophile rings generally? Is Celtic FC particularly? Special investigation with new evidence now being edited for @Channel4News

Silence, presumably if you don’t count a number of statements from the club indicating that they are dealing with it, maybe not to everyone’s liking, but they are certainly not being silent on the issue…

Such as this, from a statement in November 2018..

Allegations regarding abuse at Celtic Boys’ Club first emerged in the 1990s. Although Celtic Football Club is an entirely separate organisation, we have always taken these allegations extremely seriously because of our historic contacts with Celtic Boys’ Club. All investigations by the police and other inquiries were given our full support. We encouraged any individuals involved to report all information to the police so that matters could be investigated fully. Celtic Football Club continues to encourage any victim of abuse to report these crimes to the police.

After the allegations became known in the 1990s, Celtic Football Club took steps to develop a new code of conduct and procedures to protect young people. Since then, Celtic Football Club has been at the leading edge of putting welfare and safeguarding protections in place for our young people. We were the first club in Scotland to appoint a safeguarding officer, developing policies for the protection of young people and monitoring and reviewing our procedures to ensure they continue to reflect best practice.

The abuse of children is an issue affecting many areas of society, including a large number of football clubs, sports clubs, youth organisations, educational institutions and religious bodies across Britain. Celtic Football Club strongly believes that children and young people involved in football have the right to protection from all forms of harm and abuse and is committed to ensuring this and to promoting their wellbeing through continued cooperation with our children and young people, parents and carers and the relevant authorities.

Whilst acknowledging the abuse, and having sympathy for the victims, the club now needs to go one step further and if there is to be silence publicly, let that be because they are offering support, both financially and therapeutically, to those who have been affected, without the need for further public redress, as that cannot possibly be in the interests of the well being of those affected.

Maybe Thomson should have thought of that , but then again if he had, that would have nade him unique amongst a hungry media desperate to score points on what is an issue that needs to be dealt with sensitively.

Thomson said, but not to me;

As regard our items, only one is about Celtic FC.

Celtic’s problem is on a bigger scale than any other club, any way you look. The club is also fighting tooth and nail to avoid its plain moral – and legal – responsibility – as I’ll reveal.

Celtic fans need first to accept this obvious fact: CBC was part of CFC .

I sense you too have difficulty facing that truth. Once fans and the club do that, it follows that in a post-Weinstein and post-Man City world, Celtic’s current stance and silence is repugnant

Does that sound to you like he’s searching for a scapegoat to blame for an endemic historical problem ?

Maybe i’m paranoid, maybe I’m wearing green tinted glasses, but the issue is much wider than Celtic Boys club, as abhorrent as those crimes were, as devastating as the effects on the victims were, and it seems like the club is being made out to be some sort of ringleader.

In fact, it was those who perpetrated the abuse who built up a network of abuse, but they don’t have the money to compensate for the damage caused, and so the organisation that employed them is faced with the blame.

We may also be on the point of spotting why the BBC aren’t particularly bothered about this line of enquiry…or, indeed, those at Westminster…

That’s not to absolve Celtic of any blame, and they do have a moral if not legal obligation here, but I’d rather they went about it sensitively and out of the public eye.

That way, we really would have a club like no other.

Speaking of clubs-or companies-like no other, there’s now a total collapse underway over at fledgling new club “rangers “, who haven’t quite got the hang of what it takes to be a successful sporting entity.

Despite masive investment in their early years, and an admirable climb from their historic entry into senior football, which included at least one minor trophy and a couple of divisional titles, the leap to the top of the tree has thus far eluded them.

Bringing in a rookie former under 18 coach as manager from now European champions Liverpool, who are also odds on to lift the English title since their protege left tells its own story, with Gerrard himself this week admitting he isn’t ready for the top  Liverpool job quite yet.

The new club is on the brink of collapse both on and off the field, and we hear that one man has already deleted his email account and cancelled his phone contract in order to get a new number…

Image

Gerrards days are numbered, his abject failure in nearly two years to build a side capable of sustaining a challenge for major honours has been noted and commented on by those rabid supporters that were even prepared to overlook his catholicism , so keen were they to stop Celtic..or anyone else…from domination.

This is a crowd who once wore bread wrappers on their heads becuase they thought a man called Warburton would be their saviour.

For a crowd so used to proclaiming the coming of a Messiah, they’re not very good at spotting the fakes.

Then again, the media haven’t exactly fed them on a diet  of reality.

This week, the man who has never won a league title, either as player or manager, enters a decisive phase of his managerial career.

Should he exit the Europa League at the hands of a far superior Braga side who took their foot off the pedal at ibrox, and then couldn’t find it again afterwards, and exit the Scottish cup at a Tynecastle where the home side recorded one of very few wins this season against Gerrards side, then not only his “rangers ” career, but his entire managerial career could be over.

Already  the signs are there that he can’t cope.

He has thrown so many players under the bus after a recent run of piss poor results that the vehicle can’t get out of the car park now due to being about four feet taller.

It’s almost all over for him, and the new entity will no doubt go the way of the old one.

Financial trouble is nothing new south of the river and for all the claims that its nonsense, try to buy a new top-this season’s -from the club store.

That alone tells its own story.

I couldnlt care less whether they survive or crash again, and neither should anyone else in Scottish football. With no sponsor now for the Cup as well as the league, and tv deals struck with firms such as Premier sports, where viewing figures number only in the dozens , shows that those in charge don;lt know what they are doing either.

Or of course, perhaps they were just blinded by their desire to keep Rangers alive, despite the diagnosis offered by anyone who looked at the carcass….

In the meantime, I’m off to work, and trust me on one more thing…

This coronavirus lark has led to a bit of panic buying. all sorts of tinned goods, toilet paper and other essentials are flying off the shelf.

That’s one thing, and I refuse to be drawn into the brouhaha.

However, on a serious note, perhaps we should stock up on something, as it will become scarce if things carry on the way they’re going….

Terrific article.

Re Griff,I think him and I Wanna must be a nightmare to play against, especially as they are building up a brilliant understanding. They pull the defenders all over the place, allowing the other-or the midfield, and yesterday our defenders!-so much space.

I’m delighted though for Griff. There were a good few supporters who weren’t too keen when he joined us due to his off-field behaviour, but he soon won them over. There were many more writing him off over the last eighteen months in particular, but also from when BR took over and he hardly got a look in.

He deserves every success, every plaudit, every medal. He’s had to work a lot harder than he ever thought he would, and a lot harder than many of us thought he was capable of.

He’s come through it all,and he’s back on top where he belongs.

I’ll judge Leigh Griffiths at the end of the season, he owes Celtic big time, the club & support.
He is getting fitter & the goals are coming, all parties win, let’s all remember though it’s about Celtic, not Leigh Griffiths!

I should think the wee man would have been a bit pissed off yesterday not walking off with a match ball.
Could easily have bagged 3 or 4 like Odsonne at Copenhagen.
This partnership (as predicted) is only going to get better.
If we can keep Édouard this Summer for next Season these two will be highly effective as a front 2.
The level of understanding between them is already reaping rewards.
Said it on Lenny’s appointment that he would revert to two up,deploy a back 3 AND have his CB’s join in launching attacks from deep.
The performance yesterday by both Simunovic and Ajer in this regard is a sign of things to come.
No matter how these teams try defend in numbers having these guys taking it to them creates real issues for those assigned to picking men up.
It creates panic and ultimately it also creates a situation like yesterday where either a player has to break the line of defence (thus creating space for others) or he gets a crack at goal.
These changes have been key to our success since January and those who still continue to claim that Neil Lennon is somewhat deficient as a Tactician or Manager have now been forced to eat their own words.
If you still feel this way then may I suggest you go and read the words of the Worlds best defender as regards Lenny’s abilities as a Manager.
Time this man was given the credit he was due.

Btw, you like to go on about where Leigh Griffiths is on the list of Celtic goalscorers, how many games have you been to actually see Griffiths score any of those goals?
You know just to pump your fist in the air & shout ” Go on Leigh “?

Also, how many of those goals were crucial to the Treble Treble – None.

How many crucial to 10th trophy in a row – None.

Just pissed off at the lack of a plan B in Europe under the previous incumbent.

You do realise how stupid you sound when you are critical of Brendan Rodgers standards at Celtic?
A plan B in europe you say?
Since when were Celtic a major powerhouse in europe?
We do our best, sometimes we do well, sometimes not so, it is really that simple.
Also, if Lawwell had furnished Brendan with a few of his top targets, there may have been your plan B.
One thing i would say about Rodgers in a negative sense, is that he spent a few bob on some diddies, however he was winning EVERYTHING at the same time.
A great Celtic manager who spoiled his legacy by walking away.

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  Monti

Yes he was winning everything but at a period in history where there was no genuine challenge and we were outspending our rivals by millions.
The first sign of a viable challenge and he left pronto.
Strachan and Lennon proved Celtic could punch above our weight in Europe with less spending.
Up until Rodgers arrival Europe was the benchmark to which all Managers were to be judged.
Whilst I never expected us to go toe to toe with likes of Barca or PSG I never expected us to be humiliated by them either.
You can defend Rodgers achievement in Scotland all you want but the reality is there was no real challenge and we were spending way more to achieve less in Europe.
Should we win the tie v Copenhagen then we will have gone further again under Lennon than Rodgers and no matter what your opinion on either as Managers is there will be no getting away from it.
I say the same thing every Season.
I hope for a League and Cup Double and a good showing in Europe.
I don’t think we are a Champions League level Club now but should be showing better in the Europa.
Now if you could just highlight the stupidity in that then fill yer boots Mr Shwankly

A real team effort yesterday. The sheer irresistible effort after they scored was heartening and the team and crowd fed off each other. I watched Griff and could see him come out to pull defenders with him yet when he hit the keeper I cursed him inside. His work ethic and desire to stay involved was brilliant. Everyone on the park tried their utmost and Eddy really should have buried at least one more. When they had eleven they all sat in and with ten we hammered them. Strange for their fans to boo Frimpong on the ball and Power saw red for less that his previous at Killie. Clancy was poor in an incompetent way and booked McGregor for a minor foul.
Everyone together but Calmac, captain, for me was superb. Would be interested in how many touches and how long on the ball.

One thing that worries me long term if we are going to go with the three at the back, can Simunovic be trusted to stay injury free? I don’t think he can, stay fit or be trusted.
He will have to do until the end of the season but should be on his way soon after.
Left wing back again is in the dodgy department, i rate none of Taylor, Boli or Hayes to do a regularly good job.
Only Celtic could take in £25m for their best player, then head Kilmarnock to spend some of it?
We need better, for me anyway, just my opinion.
Interesting times now we have at least two formations to play with, we just need a bit more quality in a few positions.

Bat shit crazy to point out that an apparent fud of a Manager ( Gerrard) currently has his side on more points after 27 Games in this Season than the previous Celtic Manager had in his last two?
He’s also reached the same level in Europe that the very same Manager has never been passed in 5 attempts and you don’t think that’s relevant when judging his overall performance so far this Season?
It seems to me that some of you only ever concentrate on one side of a debate rather than the whole thing.
How absolutely crazy of me to point this out?
MENTAL
I see you’re still bodyswerving that 9 game hing you spent most of the last 8 months to batter Lennon’s appointment with 😉

C S…. To get the record straight and have a more empirical comparison. Surely their first two seasons should be used for such sweeping and erroneous conclusions. Some things should be let go.Brendan has moved on… Leave the guy alone. FFS STAND DOWN C S

No because Celtic were the bench mark in both those Seasons and under a Manager who has been touted as our most successful by some on here?
So given that this is the general consensus is it really that mental to point out the the current Hun side would be sat at the top of both those Tables with 10 games to go rather than being behind to the current side under Neil Lennon by 12 points?
The point I am making here is they aren’t as bad as some seem to think and Neil Lennon is somewhat better than this clown shoe has been trying to suggest over the past 8 months or so.
Brendan has moved on your right but his record is there to be used as a barometer of success.
Or does that only apply when making a positive about Rodgers?
Seriously away and take yer collective heids furra Raphael Sheidt.

Gerrard gave “them” hope for first time in a long time…
Sadly that has “slipped” away now… cough 🙂 strange that lightning struck twice for him

Fact – After 27 games last season, we were 8 points ahead of the Huns. That’s the only comparison that matters. I can understand Huns consoling themselves with your BS.

If we lost the Cup Final 5-4 to the Huns, you would celebrate that we scored more goals than any of the Rodgers managed finals.

Obviously the facts are getting you rattled, soft lad.

We were ahead of the Huns last year and won the league comfortably.

That’s a fact and your attempt to give the league to the Huns is pathetic.

Sky Sports have escaped punishment from broadcast regulator Ofcom over a Celtic complaint regarding a mistranslated interview with Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.
The regulator have now ruled out a detailed probe, however, because the incorrect translation on February 3 did not air on Sky’s broadcast television channel.
Claiming the matter was outwith their remit an Ofcom spokesperson: ‘We considered complaints about incorrect English subtitles in an interview on Sky Sports News.
As the section of the interview with the incorrect translation was shown only on Sky’s website and on-demand platforms, and not on its broadcast television channel, we have no grounds to pursue this matter under the Broadcasting Code.’

Surprise surprise , a regulator with no authority. This whole island is fecked.
So what you gonna do now Peter.
Action has to be taken.

Ask SKY direct who did the Translation.(I believe Lawwell already knows).
Them or someone at Ayebrox?
If it’s the latter hold them to account.

If Lawell knows then in the first instance they should be named and shamed on Celtics website.
I don’t think Lawell cares. He put on his firefighter outfit for 2 minutes last week to defend the brand. That’s all he is going to do. He’s a lazy good for nuthin cnut. Dividends is all he is about.
We need the question asked of Sky , and we need to print their response.
We will do nothing but sit at the back of the bus.

Yes It felt morally wrong to illegally stream live games.
Besides I used the money saved from cancelling my BBC License/Tax to pay for it.
The rest incidentally went to the Foundation and the local homeless problem.

Regardless of who pays for what , the fact is a national broadcaster has sullied our whole support and so far our CEO has got nothing more than a standard apology. Racist Celtic..
That requires more than an apology. Either Sky cough up who was responsible , or Celtic must stop all communication with them for the remainder of this season. No comments no soundbites nothing.
This is when you need a strong chairman , not a yes man on an inflated wage.

CS.
Whilst it is legitimate to have an opinion on say Griff or Taylor and hope one comes good and one returns to his best it is this that makes us a Europa league team. With the addition of one or two projects we will be expecting to qualify again for the CL but we just sent at that level precisely because some players will wilt or make mistakes. Even the vastly experienced Broony. We make up for it in sheer effort, determination and a team ethic.
Monti, I’ never noticed the new stalls in the LL but did notice no ‘ entertainment ‘ for the weans. Lawwell fired them to pay for the meat free pies… not that there was any in the meat pies.
Again, McGregor, Xaviesque

One is coming good and the other getting sharper by the week(his ability was never in doubt).
We’ve only ever truly invested fully in one Manager and that took us to a UEFA Cup final.
However we then spent the next 15 years paying it off.
I am of the opinion we should always look to Invest when we have the finances and replace outgoing players with better ,proven incoming one’s.
It is ridiculous that we have come out of a Transfer window with upward of £30m sat in the Accounts whilst signing bargain basement players as replacements.
We need to find a happy medium in my opinion but it is getting more difficult in the current climate where players are generally over valued and over paid.
McGregor is a product of Celtic.

Monti, have you actually WATCHED Taylor? Understand what he’s giving us from FB/WB probably best at the latter. How many assists?/fabulous, searching crosses?
KT was sublime here, no argument. But FFS, Taylor’s giving us quality too!
Poor KT may be suffering from that horrid problem, who knows? But he chose to go and we maybe dodged a bullet in terms of his future/illness/injury.
ANYWAY back Taylor, he’s a good un.

Mibbaes “Kent” was a post-code lottery from Margate an’ a’ their ‘world-wide support’ supported a hunner a head? And got stung again!
As far as Jamesie is concerned, well fuckin’ enigmatic is taken to new levels.
Match-winner, empty jersey, it’s up to James. I said on here, not long after we signed Jonny Hayes (a signing that’s baffling to this day despite his superb performances when called upon this season) that if one could inject Forrest, Ntcham, Rogic and others with Jonny’s work ethic, we’d have absolute class both to watch and sell on when that piece of shit Lawwell decided to ‘cash in’.
One day, Lawwell (and Desmond) WILL be confronted and reduced to a liquid form of the excrement they are. I do look forward to reading about this, perhaps even here. It’s not ‘out of the question’
that another, maybe even NEW blog will provide detail.
Who knows the timing/publisher? Sufficient to know it WILL happen, it WILL be made public, and those and their issue will NOT attack our species like their blood-sucking parents, the leeches and fleas whom torture our world-class supporters, a theme that the bastards Lawwell/Desmond bastardise at every opportunity for personal gain.

Sorry, I got beyond sickened as I read of (part of) Alex Thompsons remark: “I sense you too have difficulty facing that truth. Once fans and the club do that, it follows that in a post-Weinstein and post-Man City world, Celtic’s current stance and silence is repugnant.”
Well, let me say this, as one of our CEOs biggest critics, and hence critical of the Board in general, it seems to me that Celtic PLC is doing the right thing. It (CFC) denies (correctly) direct responsibility for the “repugnant” behaviour of individuals OUTSIDE of our club. Already jailed.
Furthermore, I believe our PLC has committed funds by way of helping those poor children (mostly adult now) in the re-building of their lives.
Whilst the Scottish Mainstream Media (filth) will ‘take any opportunity’ to crucify us Tims, we must be absolutely together in calling out and prosecuting all and/every perpetrator of evil against children. I have certain (radical) views here, but if the ‘Law’ is upheld, as it should be, without bias, fear or favour, then I’ll accept that, with a watchful eye due to decades of distrust.
