Celtic Diary Tuesday August 27: Thoughts For Today

Neil Lennon used the fact that he already has six wingers to explain why Scott Sinclair isn;t getting a game, yet the club has held talks with Bournemouth regarding jordan Ibe, a winger, who reportedly wants to link up with Lennon in Glasgow.

Either the manager knows what he is doing, or he doesn’t.

One player who almost certainly won’t be handed a job at Celtic now he’s retired is Craig Beattie, who told a remarkable story about Martin O’neill’s reaction when the former boss found out he had allegiances to the other side of Glasgow. O’Neill told him he didn’t care if Beattie banged a drum in the middle of July as long as he wanted to play for him, and Beattie duly signed.

Fair enough, but it appears the striker didn’t enjoy his time at Celtic..

It didn’t bother me, but it was make or break,”

“Lads ask me about it now and say ‘what’s Lenny [Lennon] like? What’s Thommo [Thompson] like? What’s Sutty [Sutton] like?’

“And now I would say: ‘Absolutely spot on’. They’ll never pass you at events, charity do’s, [they’re] absolutely brilliant.

“But back then? Absolute p***ks.

I’m guessing he didn’t say “planks “.

You could be on that training ground – and we only trained for half an hour, three 10 minute games – and be the best player on the park for 29 minutes. But you could give the ball away once and get absolutely berated. Literally, strips torn off you.

Awwww. Don’t give the ball away then.

The Express claims Celtic are going to drop their interest in Greg Taylor, as they reckon he’s not worth the £3m Kilmarnock are asking, but given it’s the Express, that means he’s probably having a medical right now, and Kilmarnock have already spent the money.

The last week of the transfer window is always exciting, but usually quite disappointing from our point of view, as we snap up the players no one else wants.

Although there is always the concern that we’ll still lose one or two. Fortunately, no one seems interested just yet, but the panic won’t start until the weekend.

On another note, Stephen O’Donnell is a little vexed at some of the , as Lachie Mhor decribed them on twitter, objective comments in the review sections on amazon.

Some were even posted just minutes after the book went on sale, which is in itself remarkable..

My particular favourite is this one.. which manages to be wrong in absolutely everything he says.

22 August 2019

Format: HardcoverVerified Purchase
This is a travesty of a book by an author who is season ticket holder at Celtic park so no objective reporting there. Why do they feel the need to write about Rangers ? Is it to get away from the dubious going on at Celtic over the years.Any Rangers supporter writing about Celtic in such a manner would called a bigot and much worse.
O’Donnell isn’t a season book holder, the reporting is objective and fair, and simply the need to write about Rangers is because no one else will.
A quick reference to child abuse  is followed by a sly hint that O’Donnell is a bigot kind of shows not only that the poster has an agenda, but also that he clearly hasn’t read the book.
Amazon have spotted what they call “unusual activity ” in the reviews, and there are quite a few similar comments, and have now restricted comments to verified purchasers, so if you have bought the book from amazon, feel free to put you thoughts on there.
The referee for sundays clash with “rangers ” hasnt been announced yet, but Bobby Madden is favourite, with perhaps Andrew Dallas, John Beaton and Bobby Tait running the lines.
Madden recently bemoaned the new penalty rules, which Beaton has largely ignored, which leads one to think he might make an honest mistake or two on Sunday..
Image
Tehn again, if he isn’t in charge, it’ll be Andrew Dallas, and I’m putting a few quid on the Celtic keeper being sent off for handball in the box for at least one of their penalties.
Before that, though, Celtic have to prevent AIK Stockholm from scoring three more goals than them in Sweden on Thursday. You’d have thought we’d be pretty safe, but this is Celtic, and Neil Lennon has made some bewildering decisions this season.
Fraser Forster started against Hearts, some say to give Gordon a rest ahead of the Stockholm game, but there is a sneaking suspicion that he’ll start against Stockholm as well.
After all, the line up against Hearts suggests that he’s going to put an extra man in midfield to stifle opponents, bith on Thursday and on Sunday, and if that is the case, the support -and me- are not giving him the credit he deserves.
Granted, he doesn’t have to explain himself to the likes of us, and it does kind of add to the occasion when we all look at each other and ask “Now what’s he doing ? “, but in fairness, he’s a stubborn old sort, and if he continues to get results then he may well be exempt from any criticism.

Well, nearly any criticism.
Something you won’t find in the media, and something that is puzzling me.
Steven Gerrard is a respected name in world football. There’s little doubt about that. Yet I cannot fathom why a man who endured the reign of Tom Hicks and George Gillett at Anfield, where the Americans leveraged buy out almost put the club into liquidation, has got himself into bed with yet another liar and fraudster.
You’d have thought he’d have given Dave King a bodyswerve, so you have to ask what King has promised him to allow for such a lapse in memory.
Gerrard was captain at Liverpool when the Americans nearly killed the club, and would have been close to the action, although his public protests to the owners were restricted to applauding protesting fans as he left the pitch after a warm down.
Once.
Perhaps the hero of the gullibillies is indeed gullible himself…then again, no one in the media will ask him.
Instead, they cover this sort of bullshit…

Aberdeen ‘roll over’ for Celtic as Rangers hero makes Steven Gerrard prediction

Graham Roberts has pinpointed the fixture Rangers must own if they are to land the Premiership title.

In the piece, by Darren Cooney of the Record, there is lavish praise for Gerrard…

Steven Gerrard has done an amazing job. He has turned the club around

Yes, they’ve won nothing but they might do one day. If no one else turns up.

But the games they struggle in is when they go to Aberdeen. They have to win those games because when Celtic go there, Aberdeen roll over and let them win.

Quite an accusation.
The difference at Ibrox for Old Firm games is there is now only 8,000 Celtic fans. This gives them a big chance of winning. They did so twice last season.
Er, 700.
Listen, I know what it’s like to play in front of them (Celtic fans). I once played in goal and did the flute band.”
Yes, he did. Thats because he’s a tit.
but this is the kind of coverage their club is getting, and we knew it was coming.
Perhaps thats why we are a little more nervous this season than in previous years.
Perhaps thats why we are criticising the club a little more than we would normally do.
Do not underestimate the power of the media to get into our heads, and more importantly, the heads of the players.
We need to win at ibrox, quite convincingly, and that should shut them up for a while.
Yesterday, we had this…

I’ll tell you how much of a tit he is. He once won ‘Player of the Year’ from the Johnstone Rangers(IL) Supporters club. On the big evening, the happy huns were infesting the local ludge, wondering where their hero was? Phone rings ;

“I can’t seem to find the club?”
“Where are you?”

Ralph may have a point that all the OTT whinging might reflect more and more anxiety about us getting to 10 IAR, if that’s the case they will be hanging effigies of Lenny and Broonie from the top deck at CP next season. Does it however also explain why Ralph gets absolute pelters if he makes a mistake like not listening when Lenny explains Forster isn’t registered although is there not an exception for goal keepers if an injury happens. Oh well who’d be Ralph, Lenny, Lawwell, Madden or Dallas?

One of the next two games will be significant for the season. Of course that is the AIK game. The game with the tribute club is just another game in a league campaign. Doomsday predications of losing the game and so on are a bit hysterical at this point. Obviously would be good to continue our league form and get a win from both games. The big game is AIK.

The doomsday prediction is that one game or one defeat is catastrophic for the league campaign – It is not. It is three points and three points only there is a chance we may lose ( doubt it myself ) and that is not the end of the season or the manager. Put it into perspective

Celtic, a victim of the money-ball, when you are punished for running your club successfully, keeping your costs down and your outputs high.
In essence we are the vic-Tim’s of your own success. Players and coach’s at home and abroad gravitate towards the football leagues where they are offered higher wages and bonus’s. Other clubs in the SPFL know that we have achieved a high income from our success in the transfer market and so they raise the value of any player that Celtic are interested in. Players know that our club pay’s higher wages and bonus’s and is many times wealthier and safer than any other club in Scotland, subsequently they raise their player values. It happened last year with McGinn, Aberdeen with McKenna and now Kilmarnock with Greg Taylor. So we end up looking further away for greater value players. Mind you, the Huns would sell their club to get to where we are at, Oh Wait..

The rumour is that it was Nuremburg that were asked for £1m and pulled out.

Killie will see that we’ve got £25m for Tierney and have a problem area that needs fixed ASAP.

That’s a strong plus for them but on the other side, if they don’t deal, will they have a player running down his contract ala Turnbull?

£2-2.5m plus Hendry loan?

Mike

Reply to  The Cha

But that gets me back to my main point, Nuremburg asked to pay £1.000,000 mill. We being asked to pay £3,000,000 mill. Personally I don’t see him being worth £3.00mill. at this stage. I would rather we spent higher and brought in Meiling and paid the extra, if Rosenberg lose out on the C.L. Interesting that Hendry is also wanted by Motherwell, I thought that might make more sense with an eye on Turnbull possibly coming to Celtic in January… Is Lawwell waiting until tonight’s C.L. results or looking at other alternatives?

Reply to  Mike

Roseborg aren’t playing until tomorrow, so presumably Thursday before negotiations can begin.

Given Lawwell’s sloth-like negotiating “skill”, at least in trying to buy players, do you think he’s got it in him to complete a deal before deadline?

I don’t know enough about Taylor to say if he’s “worth” £3m but if he can improve us and there’s no oned else then its a piddle in the ocean of our cash reserves.

Mike
Reply to  The Cha

I thought I read that they had spoken before to Roseburg, but yes you are right, my expectation levels are pretty low regarding Lawwell’s ability to get players in. I like my defenders to be big and pacey, so for me Taylor is too small. Of the two Killie full back’s I preferred O’Donnell for right back, he only has one year left on his contract and has refused the offer of a new one, so I sense that Celtic youth player might yet come to us. There must be other, better full back’s than Taylor, a club with our rich’s should be able to find them, instead we attract more than our share of duds.

bgbhoy in my opinion you are OTT about the manager. If we are out of the Europa League and we lose at ibrox then i accept harsh words will be exchanged but what is ott is not coming up with an alternative and seeming to diss what he achieved both in his first spell as manager and when he came in to mount the rescue package after Br left. He deserves credit and patience for that, i would add out of the Europa League, lost at Ipox and fail to achieve 9 IAR, now that wouldn’t beOTT, just my opinion bgbhoy.

bgbhoy

Reply to  BJF

ive gave him credit for securing the treble, plenty of it. he was literally the only man to come in and firefight after what happened with Rodgers

but its a backwards step appointment that should barely have been considered let alone appointed.

not achieving 9iar is simply not an option!! don’t you get what will happen to them if we get it, and what would happen to us should we not

he failed domestically with us the last time he was a manager re trophies that he lost, he lost the league to the scum after a horror show at inverness or we would already be on 9

there has to be literally 100s of managers that we could have replaced him with in the summer but we didn’t even ask, its amateur hour on a massive scale

7 games into the season and we crash out to a team ranked 200 places below us

this was expected by many, and its the knowing we could have easily appointed better with the resource we have that causes the complete rage reaction

he knew before xmas that he was the next celtic manager, and that is wrong on so many levels

We have lost on our last two visits to Govan and by all accounts they have improved.

Of the above team:

Boli will be targeted with long balls and pressure applied. Plus, most of Sevco’s play comes down the right with their RB. I really doubt Johnston and Boli will cope.

Secondly, we are weak physically (outwith back 4) if we play that team. Cal Mac, Christie, Forrest and Johnston are not physical and will be kicked and harried all game.

I fancy Ntcham to play and Johnston to be benched; even then, I’m not confident as that line up is not conducive to good football.

I would take a draw now.

Mike

Reply to  Hands Cant Hit

I disagree, the last game at Govan, I seem to remember young Mikey Johnston playing on his own up front. I do believe they have improved and will be highly motivated. But Tavnier isn’t that great at defending, they have lost Kent and we are twice as good as them up front. So its plus’s and minus’s and we are much wiser and now better know what to expect. We have a number of good players, playing at a higher level, they have much less experienced and new players. No way would I trade their players for ours. Start on the front foot and keep the pressure up. Ntcham is not for me, period, he keeps on giving the ball away when under pressure. No more McGregor at the back, Boli will handle Tav. unless they get a pen.

I would be very nervous about having Mbombo (well named) play on Sunday at Ipox. I think he will either freeze or get sent off for a “rash challenge”. I think a more experienced Hayes would be a better option for Sunday. Nir Bitton would be my pick to come in for Brown also on Sunday as his passing is more creative especially since Brown will most likely be playing on Thursday and I think he will need a rest.
Boli seems to come alive in the attacking third where his movement and passes are very good. In the defensive third his passes are generally overhit or underhit (weight of passes). His tackling is poor but he does have lots of energy. A work in progress.

Melling every day of the week if we get him. We’re home and hosed. Great player not Tierney but the next best thing we are still the best team in the competition. It’ll be tight but we should win the league a treble is within our grasp but don’t expect it personally I’d like our European identity enhanced. Domestic triumph is at the forefront and f the Celtic psyche but we have to extend ourselves in getting as far as we can get. Lenny does have it within him but I think he feels he’s taken on a job from a superior. Like anything in life you got to take challenges on. I’d like to see him do it because he is a good Celtic man a player and manager. There’s no reason he can’t usurp Rodgers through grit and clever management it’s within him

Thanks Steve. I had the chance to watch Celtic Tv and Bayo has one hell of a left foot! He scored an absolute rocket with a left foot volley (hip high) and scored a difficult chance with his left in one of the summer friendlies. There is more to come from our young Ivorian! The game in Sweden is the main game in importance this week but we have the squad to handle it. Obviously we are very week at the full back positions. Only 2 players surviving the summer clear out from the defence. On the plus side I have never seen 3 better goalies playing for Celtic at the same time. I have always thought Foster was out best ever shot-stopper. I would take 2 draws for the next 2 games but we have a better team/squad than any other team in Scotland. We need experience on the park for Sunday.

Good to see the positivity tempered with a fair dose off realism. I always use the how many of them would get into our squad rule. In recent years just Kent maybe Morellos, now Jack, at least one if not two of their centre halves, McGregor, Davis, possibly but the key issue is they have a better squad than last year not a better one than Celtic. Eddy, Forrest, McGregor, Christie and Ajer are streets ahead of their equivalents, even our third choice striker would get into their squad. The main concern is the impact of a tough away European tie and if that goes well the adrenaline could take is through Sunday. Just about Lenny if we do get rid of him it means we have failed.

It seems there’s a ‘game on’ with Rosenborg vs Dynamo Zagreb as Rosenborg have scored (after 29 mins) at home making it 1-2 current aggregate. If R’borg go out, I’ll bet Lawwell will repeat “evrything possible done to get the deal over the line…..’ regarding Meling. Wot a cunt Lawwell truly is! (regardless of that guesstimate about Meling)

I must have been sleeping, because I missed the bit where Sevco won the C.L. It seems that they have some great players and ours are wee fearties. Remind me which team have won the last three trebles, remind me about the number of International caps our players have won. O.K. the squinty eyed fud that is Ryan Jack has just won his second or third cap, WOW shivers down my back bone. And then we have One cap Morelos who hasn’t scored against us and who they have been punting for months, or shock, horror the mighty Tavnier who has won Hunners of penalties, but fuckall caps. The ragin Gimp that is, oh who cares. The point is, as we witnessed in Paisley they are pish, when away from the bigoted hordes in their sewer. Let them fear us because believe me they do, them and their high pitched Nelly, who once apon a time was a great PLAYER, but who has won the same as his players fuckall..

Looks like Rosenborg are OUT.
They need to score 3 in the last 10 minutes or Jew’s foreskin.
Could Meling still be a go-er? Arsehole Pete, it’s down to you. NO EXCUSES.

sfa, I sorted Lawwell’s ‘position’ out recently with a Caption entry which said his taxi was ‘here’ to take him far away until the windae closes. He disnae ken the taxi’s bugged, but the taxi’s no’ as bugged as he’ll be when he finds out he’s been set up. “Haw driver, I’d raither ye didnae go over that Erskine Bridge there……why is that other taxi stopping in front of us?…..why are you stopping and opening all the doors? ……WHheeeeeeeeee, Byeeeee, wont be missed.

sfa, if just if, PTL ‘tripped’ as he was being ‘helped’ over the Kingston Bridge or Erkine Wan to safety, how would one feel? Just how would one feel? Comments would flood in from Celtic FC (not PLC) supporters worldwide with a central theme of: “pity, it didnae come earlier”, “shame, whit a shame oan ra Cellic ever huvvin him”, et cetera, ad infinitum. Me? Ah wid cry, as a did when the ‘wicked witch’ succumbed tae the Grim Rieper (just a wee jest, Marc wiz a good yin)….and it’s good night from him……….
I JUST LOVE THE GLASGOW CELTIC.

If you ever make sense, BJF, and spell within reason, (the only correct parts of your pish being copied and pasted from me) it’ll be like Eve and the (bullshit) apple; a first!
Now fuck off back into your burrow. You add NOTHING here except perhaps the humour that greater mortals see in your typed pish. Like Rangers FC, you wont be missed. Byeeeeee!
