Celtic Diary Thursday August 15: Something Has To Change

After Tuesdays debacle in Glasgow, where Celtic conspired to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory-not once, but three times, it’s clear that should the club wish to consider itself a champions League club, something has to change.

Only twice, in the last decade, have Celtic made the group stages of the elite competition..2-12 and 2016.

Failure in the qualifiers has become the norm, and not the exception.

Tuesday was avoidable, in fact one could argue that it was harder to lose that tie than it was to win it. A team which has won six out of seven games was broken up to accommodate Olivier Ntcham at the expense of Celtics most comsistent midfielder, who was shunted to left back.

We all know what happened, and we all know what the consequences were.

Lennon made an arse of it, and we have to ask why.

Brown and MacGregor are the midfield back line. It’s as simple as that. Each knows how the other plays, and they work together as a unit.

Moving MacGregor out of that partnership meant that Brown, who clearly had little faith in Ntcham, presumably because the player has said he’s too good for this team and too good for this league, then opted to try to do evrything himself. He popped up at left back, right back, central defence and even once, quite spectacularly, as goalkeeper.

The calming influence of Nir Biton was removed from the defence, to allow Jozo Simunovic …another with his eye on a move…to come back into the side. Simunovic is not noted for his calmness.

Even when ahead with fourteen minutes to go, Lennon somehow avoided introducing Biton to shore up the back line, which remains one of the more bizarre decisions of a truly bewildering evening.

Mikey Johnston, another who had missed a few games was brought back in, removing the ineffectual Lewis Morgan from the right side, though with Scott Sinclair not even on the bench, it meant the left flank was patrolled by a non left back and a lightweight novice winger.

Suddenly, the result doesn’t seem such a surprise.

Scott Bain picked up where he left off at Motherwell, possibly as a result of him playing behind yet another unfamiliar back four, but also possibly because he isn’t very good. There are calls for Craig Gordon to be recalled, but frankly, he isn’t very good either.

The problem we have is that the very real danger of no group stage European football this season is looking more likely than not, should Celtic and Lennon continue to arse about with the team.

Likely opponents AIK Stockholm are an established side, who will fancy their chances against A Celtic side that , over the last ten years or so, has consistently failed to perform in Europe.

And it doesn’t look like this year is going to be any different, In fact it might be worse.

So, what went wrong ? I mean why did it go wrong ? We’re all perfectly aware of what went wrong.

Except of course, the manager, who reckons that playing MacGregor at left back didn’t make any difference.

We hear talk, as yet unconfirmed, that there was a row in the dressing room pre match between manager and captain. If true, that would explain the performance of Brown. The captain apparently told Lennon that he was making a mistake, but the boss ignored him.

Olivier Ntcham was not Browns favoured partner, and putting him in the shop window to encourage a move is not, and should never be, how to plan for such an important game.

The disagreement may have, had it happened, been a reason for the poor all round performance, and the less than mature efforts of Brown.

Sure , the Romanians fouled ebryone that moved, and yeah, the referee wasn’t great.

But thats no excuse, and Celtic , again, have exited the top table of club football not to a better side, but entirely down to their own mistakes.

So, who gets the blame, and where does the change have to take place ?

An obvious candidate for the door is the manager. Ultimately, he must stand or fall by his own decisions, which in this case, were clearly wrong.

Playing players out of position for what seems the flimsiest of reasons is a schoolboy error. Can you imagine the surge of adrenalin that went through the Cluj players when they saw the disjointed line up pre match.

What if there was a row, and the Romanians heard it ?

Celtic Park, the once feared venue for foreign teams, is now on many bucket lists for footballers, as a nice night out.

Celtic lost four goals at home, for only the third time in their history, in a European game.

Four goals. In an arena where Oliver Khan once celebrated his Bayern Munich side getting a 0-0 draw….

Lennon is under pressure now, severe pressure. Further failure in Europe followed by defeat at Ibrox will throw the season into chaos even this early.

The board will, of course hide away until all this has blown over, and yet they are equally as culpable as the management.

Any board of any other business , including the Chief Executive who has seen the business lose millions and millions of pounds by not performing in its core market, would be dismissed.

At thirty or so million pounds per campaign, thats a serious loss of income, and shareholders should be asking questions if those charged with running the club are really fit for purpose.

It’s their job to see that the workforce is provided with the tools to do the job they are asked to, and that, over the last ten years or so, has clearly not happened.

And it doesn’t look like it will happen next year either, or the year after that.

The downsizing we heard about at the end of last season is well and truly underway.

The board cannot be accused of not spending, having invested in four new players to date, at a cost of over £10m .

But only one of them played on Tuesday, a right back signed for just over £1m, who looked every inch a £1m right back. Thats not a criticism of him, he at least put in the effort, but effort is no substitute for quality at this level.

Th other two may yet turn out to be okay, but what we have seen is the danger of planning for these qualifiers in the summer, and not in the previous winter, which would allow them time to settle.

For the moment, Lennon needs to pick his best eleven and stick with them. Places should be earned purely on merit, and consistency should be the key.

For the Cluj game, that seemed to have been thrown out of the window.

Stories of discord in the dressing room will probably emerge over the next few days, if indeed, that is the case.

Although just rumour at the moment, and people looking for an explanation of why it all went wrong may well have seized on them and constructed their own narrative around them to fit their own theory.

I may even be guilty of that, but one thing is certain.

Something is wrong, and it needs to be fixed.

And it needs to be fixed right now.

As you admit, you are guilty of constructing your own narrative. That’s neither helpful nor necessary.
Criticism of the board, Lenny’s tactics, player performance & the total absence of evidence that Hammond’s (who he?) earning his money are all fine. Better if the criticism is constructive.
Giving the already fevered Uncle Tims some more gatuitous muck to rake over makes the bad situation even worse.

Not once have I heard all the so called analysts mention that we started the second half with the same team as the first and quickly scored 2 goals, Mcgregor and all. We were in charge until brown had a brain freeze. It changed the game, if we scored another to make it 3-1 it would have been over, we never of course but for me it was plain stupidity that lost that game not formations.

Mike

Three times has Cal-Mac been played at left back and three times Celtic has lost. Crazy tactics, team selection and lack of game management nouse has been at a huge cost to the club. But so is the lack of real investment in the team, lack of proper scouting, a lack of sheer professionalism upstairs, until that changes, expect more of the same. We don’t need the Huns to do us damage, when we can do it to ourselves…

Lawwell has to go

Lennon has to go

brown wont do for me this season, some of our better football was played with him out the side last year

left back, right back, midfield player and striker are a must

a progressive football COACH (not a puppet) working under a director of football

a CEO that only deals with the financials and has nothing to do with what players are brought in

anything less and 9iar will not happen…

But that doesn’t make Bgbhoy wrong. Its the sheer lack of professionalism from the board, a total disregard for the support, who seem to be ignored, the deaf ear approach. Appointing a coach in the showers and not doing interviews for the job, its run like a dictatorship. Worst of all, silence, perhaps even complicity in the cheating, definitely ignoring Res.12 with the proof of cheating and fraud. Ignoring a lying blue Hun fawning press, never sticking up for the support. Where are our core values, the values of Walfrid? It appears to be all about money, while the team seems to be at the bottom of the pile for investment. There is no planning for the future, its the sticking plaster approach, its just wrong and our support deserve better, much better.

I just read the Celtic Star and it quotes four Celtic men, if what they say is true (I don’t doubt it btw) then it backs up what I said. Its not just Lenny there are other goings on that show how bad things are. Someone or two or three need to be hunted. You can see what’s going to happen, its in the usual script… Greg Tayler, perhaps even Stephen O’Donnell, who I rate from Killie and another sap to the support. It was said by Lawwell, long before the season started, there will be many changes come this window. Since then… Seven players released after their contracts ended and four loanees returned to their clubs and that will be the sap, (a loanee) total mince…

Didn’t say he was wrong Mike, what I am saying is that they’ve (bastards on the board) let this slip into abyss that we’ll struggle badly to get out of. Signings. Bayo, Shved, Bolingoli (he makes Anton Rogan look like Beckenbauer), Julien, Go Compare and many more I can’t be fkd mentioning ,who don’t contribute in any way are stonewall evidence that the club is being poorly run. Lennon should never have got the job and Llawell’s smug fat visage should be removed henceforth. It’s a fkn shambles.

I mind in an Etims podcast with Jeanette Findlay and we were talking about the Foundation and other aspects of the Club and Jeanette highlighted “Its all the fans money”.
Stuck with me ever since.
Everything at that place, every win, every achievement, every piece of kudos claimed by Lawwell and co…funded by the fans.

The wanton disregard for the “customer base” is tragic. Every year we huff and puff and moan and groan.

What happens?
We get patted on the head and offered “Rod Stewart at the Hydro with the Lions” or “The Celtic Festival”…guess what…more of the fans money being spent on the club?

If The new PR consultant has any brains they will make the EL qualifier free entry as I think a lot of folk are at breaking point.

I don’t doubt that, she was right. It is the Celtic supports money and they ARE the club. This board our supposed custodians are first in the que to take all the plaudits, but deaf and deflective when they are caught out. Its the total disregard of the support that angers me the most, how much it costs them financially and get little in return. They get fleeced at every turn, I detest that. The richest club by miles doing SFA for the support, only encourages the Huns. But even worse is the total lack of morals in keeping Scottish football clean, they have the financial muscle to run the Scottish game and keep it clean, but the bigot buck is strong, stronger than fair governance, disgusting..

You are right there is something wrong at Celtic Park. I think we were fortunate last year as it took us weeks to get over the AEK debacle with the poor early away form of Sevco hindering them. I have a real fear that AIK will put us out of Europe and if our recent performances at Ibrox are anything to go by, we will lose there. Make no mistake Sevco are up for it big time and look to have a settled side with lots of midfield options now. If we make an arse of this, the fans will never forgive them

Hoping you are right Charlie; those are my sentiments. Looking at how the Huns have played in the games that I have seen on tv they have looked absolute crap, easy passages in the E.L. here’s hoping Warsaw Legia? give them a footballing lesson over the next couple of weeks. Very lucky to have got a win at Rugby Park, not sure if Beaton didn’t assist them at the cesspit on Sunday but Hibs were coming back at them until the sending off of their player. Until Tuesday night we have been playing far better than at the start of the season this time last year and if there aren’t any problems/splits in the dressing room I believe we can over come Tuesday nights calamity, I for one never thought it was going to be an easy match, they sure are dirty Bassa’s and imho they should have had two players sent off but for the lenience of the Dallas/Beaton/ Madden doppelganger masquerading as a referee, must have been trained in Lanarkshire. The game was up after Brown’s penalty, can’t really condemn him after all the service ha has given to the club. We are stuck with P.L. until Desmond tells him to stop cheeseparing and le the manager choose the team that he see’s fit for the club or he gets a great job with U.E.F.A./F.I.F.A. And turns his back on Scotland; A suite of offices in Nyon seems the more likely prospect. Hopefully we can pick ourselves up and dust ourselves down and proceed onwards and upwards. Hail. Hail.

Looks the the hysteria continues and suddenly after losing a game, we are the worst team ever with the worst coach ever an the worst captain ever oh yes and the worst board in football. I think news of our death is greatly exaggerated. I agree that football people should pick players to but to play and to sell. The CEO has to ensure the clubs survival and have it thrive – work to do there outside hotels and lights. There are many on here that seem enamored by “rangers” and their star players – are you serious? They have one decent player on loan from Liverpool just like last year. AIK if it is them – is a critical game for us for Europa league. I’;l; be betting on Celtic big time and hope the bookies share the sense of despair on here.

Broxburn, When good Celtic men, who only have Celtic F.C. in their hearts, start singing the same song, you know that the song has relevance. You do not run a business, any business on a whim, you do not appoint any senior managers in the showers without making a detailed investigation into the best person available for the job. You don’t have a CEO who is a trained accountant playing DoF. You have a CEO to look after the best interests of the company, but that doesn’t give him carte blanch to act like a dictator. Football in Scotland is unique in that it runs the gauntlet of bigotry and it is corrupt. When that corruption is directed against the club, you would expect to see the CEO fight for honesty, not to ignore or to encourage it. When Lawell was appointed as the clubs accountant, so because of his complicity he should be sacked and another accountant appointed and not at £3.00 mill. p.a. That amount could be spread to include a qualified DoF. The club, our club needs changed and cleansed and started afresh with fresh faces. That is what real businesses do, keep things fresh all the while remembering who we are and what we represent an F.C.

There is no smoke without fire in my opinion and it’s worrying there stories like the bust up and Phil’s article about recruitment are coming from Celtic sources. I think it’s fairly obvious that Brown did in a moment of anger like that post then back tracked and all this is playing out exactly the way a lot of people thought it would when Lennon took over after the hibs carry on. There’s an article on the Celtic star today that paints a very worrying picture of how our club is being run . The more I read this stuff it id clear that lawell has to go , the normal shelf life of a ceo is up to give years , this guy has been here 17! He has an iron grip on the football operation and his mistakes at being covered by asset stripping ( player sales) . Seems like the financials get better every year Delboy. What do you mean losing the club millions? What millions that we had has he lost? If you mean missing out on potentially making millions, that charge can be levied at many a CEO. I understand that we are unhappy buts lets not speculate that Lowell somehow lost millions that we never had in the first place that is daily Record talk. Let’s talk about failure in buying the right players for Celtic and spending a bit more to get those players. He can be accused of that and if he is the one who decides what players are bought and what players go then that is wrong all day long.

The financials get better but the quality of the team diminishes. That model is not sustainable. What if 9 is not achieved and we’ve handed the scum the title. What type of attendees do you think will turn up next season. Similar figures to Deilas tenure but the difference will be that theyll lose 10-15k season ticket holders. Good financials will be a thing of the past.

Do you seriously think that we will go on winning the league forever? Seems like it along with many others here. What if games are great. What if we win the treble again? It’s an equally valid proposition isn’t it? Maybe there will be an even longer waitlist than there is now and maybe the will generate even more money? Equally as feasible maybe more so than the opposite. Someone else will eventually win the league that is inevitable and that said I have yet to see any serious challengers that can sustain a season long campaign. I get it many people dislike Neil Lennon as manager – just say so. You think he’s worse that Delia? You certainly think he’s worse than BR and that man did a runner. Does that mean its the end of the world as we know it – what if it isn’t 🙂

So we hand them the title on a plate. It is the way the club is being run and you simply accept that nothing lasts forever. I remember only too well missing out of ten in a row and to put ourselves in the position of actually achieving it, we only to being let down by the mismanagement of the people that make the wrong decision decisions time after time. It is not the way to run the club. I don’t think you realise the shit storm that will engulf Celtic if they meekly surrender the 10. They are making a a massive error of judgement if they believe that the fans will stay onside forever.

Brox,

There is no doubt that Celtic are now a selling club. Good players will leave. The issue is how to manage this and have reasonable performances on the park. To do the latter we need to attract and retain (for a reasonable period) players of some quality. In order to do that we need an attractive salary structure. Now we get to the nub of the problem. How do we pay for competitive salaries? Since domestic football cannot do this, there are only two options: 1. Sell assets(players), or 2. Increase revenue from some source. In the past, that additional revenue has come from Europe. If we keep failing to get CL revenue, the only options are to sell our assets or scale back on the level of player that we have. Which do you want? Either of these two options leads to a downward spiral of quality on the park.

If we cannot perform in Europe, the outcome of lower quality players is inevitable.

On Tuesday, the manager squandered our chance to access CL earnings by making school boy mistakes. Further, he has turned up the heat on the CEO/Board by his bungles. Where are his friends now? He is toast….it is when not if now for him. Pity, because he loves the club.

I had a season ticket for 20 plus years and attended games before that , when Delia was in charge and we had all the downsizing I became disallusuoned and thought fuckvit I’m no going back so I cancelled my payments and didn’t go back . Celtic phoned me at renewal time giving it we don’t want to lose you being a loyal supporter listen we will wave the 300 pounds please renew so I did and Brendan arrived , went to all the games and pumped another 1200 plus in reason tickets into the club before I got married that spring and funds were low so I opted for the payment plan. I ended up getting knocked back for it with the new credit company and Celtic told me you have a week to pay in full or it goes to someone else . I spoke to a few people saying can you please let me pay a deposit to keep my seat as I can’t get 650 quid in a few days .. they basically said fuck off we can’t do that and I lost it , that was my thanks for attending Celtic games my whole life and paying thousands to the club who are world class in everything they do . We are nothing more than a side show to these people

Calm down ffs. I’m waiting on the ‘what does John Kennedy do’? line. He changed it because he had no faith in the left hand side based on the first leg and league games. It didn’t work and we lost. We are not CL in either quality of player, technical ability, intelligence nor style of play( I include the management team in this). There was, and still is, the opportunity to push on but we never do that.
BgBhoy, i’m surprised at your usual astute observations. Those four are not better and even if they were, do you think they would improve us in Europe ? We will beat Dunfermline, probably raggedly as whoever makes the first mistake will be slaughtered, we will go through against Stockholm (sitting second, just got Seb Larsson on a free) and we’ll take it from there.
Sadly, a win (or at this rate, even a draw) in two weeks and many will feel better. They are not the yardstick.

been raging about it steve

I may be talking shite but its what i’m thinking at the moment

I remember walking up to hampden in april 2016 genuinely worried about losing the semi to new rangers but anyone and everyone saying that we will hammer them (I left at halftime) couldn’t handle them bouncing up and down and singing about child abuse

my point is that so many of us now have been blinded by the last 3 years success and the state they had been in we just assume we will beat them and win the league

I cant see it, weve been regressing now for 18months, and they have been improving

really fear the worst

Dreadful result and cringeworthy tactics. Petrescu showed what a pragmatic manager does in identifying the opposition weakness and targeting it. Given that its so obvious that its our defence its all the more galling that Celtic have not properly recruited again here. Tuesday was untterly self inflicted and completely predictable. The changes we need are plain for all to see too. Better manager. More ambition translated into better and timely recruitmen. And owners who defend the club and realise that professionalism is useless in a corrupt organisation like the sfa.

One thing that immediately stands out here for me is a simple question:

Why didn’t we take an expensive defender(s) on loan with option to buy like we did with Edouard?
Prove they can hack it and settle here before a wild mad punt.
Did we learn nothing from Comperr, Kouassi, Bayo and even Hendry?

You can O the wagons from the Hun press, you can O the wagons from the Hun SFA/SPFL. You can O the wagons from the Huns themselves and their lickspittles in the BBC-STV-SKY but you cannot O the wagons from the internals, but they can cause the club so much damage. When selfishness overrides a cause and greed comes before honesty, its like a player out to make a name for himself instead of playing for his team-mates. When internals are complicit with the cheats, putting the bigot pound before openness, honesty and transparency you know your club is taking the wrong path and its time for a correction, an inward inspection. When the Resolutioners provided the truth of the cheating and the truth was silenced and pushed aside, then the club is tarnished. The tarnish must be removed and the greed taken out, to get the club back on to the right pathway..

“Only twice, in the last decade, have Celtic made the group stages of the elite competition..2-12 and 2016.”

It’s actually 3 times as the “clueless” Rodgers qualified us in 2016 and 2017 (out of 3 attempts).

Rather surprisingly, the more European savvy Lennon, only qualified 1 out of 5 (?), most of which was when it was a lot easier to do so.

Who’da thunk it.

Me too Monti. I think there’s a lack of belief in the team and that rests on Lenny’s back. We should’ve beaten that team by two clear goals and I believe we would’ve if brown didn’t have a mind blip maybe the lights were in his eyes I don’t know but it was the turning point. It gave Cluj confidence I think they smelt blood against a team finding its feet and unsure. Sinclair is a mature experienced player and knows how to be part of a team that knows how to close a game out . I’m surprised Lenny didn’t recognise experience is needed in the situation we were in at 2-1 and 3-2 up. The penalty was the turning point. My thoughts are that it will take time for this team to gel

It’s apparently on Lawwell’s orders to freeze him out so we get a high earner of the wage bill.

It worked well the last time it was tried against Bobo Balde.

Sinclair has scored or assisted approx 100 goals in 3 seasons and is used to playing in big games.

Hayes, Morgan etc contribute next to nothing.

I like Johnston but he’s still a young kid and it’ll be years before he’s a consistent performer.

Macca

Was said earlier in the thread, the Board play on our emotions. They know the fans will turn up at the weekend to get behind the team and try and create momentum for the Ibrox game.

Lawwell and Desmond only understand one thing, money. Are we brave enough to deprive the team of our support and Lawwell of the cash to effect change? If the answer is no then there can be no surprise/outrage when history repeats itself. Just saying.

Life goes on. Everything said above has some truth in it.
I fear we would have lost in the next round anyway. Lenny has learned a few lessons. Here’s more advice Lenny: Scott Sinclair is our man on the left. Our best football last year was Christie and Cal Mac side by side.Get Rogic fit. Get Gutman on the pitch. Is Julienne good enough or not? Is Boli good enough or no? I think our 3-4-1-2 is better than 4-2-3-1.
Bain
Ajer/Simunovic/Julienne
Forrest/Brown/Calmac/Boli
Christie
Edouard/Griffiths
Sinclair/Johnston/Shved to figure.
I do agree that Newco Huns have put everything on this throw of the dice but when did a Sevco team last win at Celtic Park? We only need to draw at Mordor. That is their test and they haven’t passed it yet. Also, they will have enormous pressure on them and won’t always get MIB support. Quality in our side? I give you Ajer, Christie, Calmac, Forrest, Sinclair, Edouard and Griffiths. All these guys can play. Put Rogic back in the mix. Lenny, if you can admit your mistakes and learn from them we are still with you. Steady the ship. You know our history. Hail, hail. Everybody, take a deep breath.

To add to our woes Scott Bain now has a hand injury which will rule him out for about 2 months. This means that we’ll be in the market for a new goalie as of now but who will it be? I hope it’s not going to be an average second or third choice keeper brought in from the English championship as an emergency loan or bought on the cheap. There’s been a lot of talk re bringing Fraser Forster back. I’ve got mixed feelings on that one. Sure, he was brilliant during his time with us but when was the last time he got a game in Southampton’s first team? Wages would be an issue as well. I’m sure there are quite a few affordable quality keepers playing in Eastern Europe at the moment.

Why are we out of the Champions League?
We didn’t play 2 deep lying midfielders.
Why?
Calmac played a LB and Bitton was deemed too slow.
Why?
Lennon didn’t trust Boli.
Why?
He’s only just arrived.
Why?
‘Cause the flocking board didn’t plan ahead last summer and bring in realistic LB cover.

Scotty Sinclair top goalscorer in treble treble years not deemed better than Johnstone or Morgan
The team should have picked itself
We are 1_1 from the first match close the door and play them at their own game.
3 centre backs 2 wing backs and speed and power up front.Counter attacking football they need to score.
The whole thing fucked up by a manager out his depth. Now the board have lots to answer no doubt but fuckin hell Lenny what were you playing at.

BJF

My opinion probably the only person who agrees with me is me, fine. When Rodgers did the dirty someone made a clever decision and brought Neil Lennon back result a treble, simple fact. We are NOT a Champions League Club, there is no way we could be, yes every 5 or 6 years we might get to the Group stages, maybe with luck do it 2 years running but that’s it. Financially and given the poor league we are in we are a Europa League team right. We are in the Europa League where we belong at this time anyway, I hope it will change. The line up
for Tuesday was very poor, Lenny and the players deserve pelters. If they lose to Hearts or the Tribute Act then even sensible people will be losing the plot too. Is there something rotten at the core of the team, Phil’s claim that Julien and Boli are useless is worrying or dangerously decisive. Desmond is not going anywhere unless he wants too, Lawwell isn’t going anywhere unless Desmond says so. It might suit some people to see Celtic year themselves apart in a year when we are going for 9iar, now I wonder who that would suit?

Macca

Get away with what ? Rodgers sneaked out the door and always intended to it seems. What would you do if you were Lawell. Who would you bring in to steer the side to winnthe cup and finish the league off? Then what manager would you hire instead of Lennon? Don’t say Steve Clarke he would be out of his depth for sure. So who?

The Cha

Reply to  BJF

Bringing Lennon back wasn’t a clever move, it was a cheap one (in fact it cost nothing), as he was unemployed with no prospects of employment elsewhere.

That’s why he was brought back and not for footballing reasons, as his disastrous 5 years at Bolton and Hibs, where he left a total shambles, would have precluded him.

We are expected to be a Champions League team, at least by UEFA, who seed us accordingly.

I agree there’s someone working against Celtic’s interest and its the guy who pays himself massive bonuses, sells our best assets and refuses to sign proper replacements.
