August and Everything after….

Well that was that.

In the words of an Edinburgh based Celtic fan “You’ll have had your Champions League then!”.

An utter shambolic performance saw Celtic lose a tie from being in a position in front, not once, not twice, but three times.

Embarrasing.

Not even a wonderful second half from the Edouard and Christie double act could save the side from a self inflicted disaster. Sure Cluj scored the goals but Celtics defeat and exit was pure self harm.

From the moment the team were announced, every Celtic fan thought “Calmac at left back…nah, cant be..EVERYONE knows that doesn’t work…don’t they?”. Seems Lenny had either forgot that Ibrox shitshow or he really doesn’t have any confidence in Bolingoli despite winning 6 games with him in the side and drawing a 7th. There was no word of an injury or a strain so Boli sat on the bench alongside the £7m Julien who looks like the most expensive mannequin since Marvin Comperr.

What is going on that £10m worth of defenders are benched to be covered by Ajer and MacGregor..2 natural midfielders?

Lenny dared to say the side were timid and lacking the nuts and bolts in the first half…yeah because he had decided to take the car into the garage and dismantle it for apparently no reason when it just needed a wash and polish!

Lenny also thought attack was the best form of defence and brought Mikey Johnson right back into the side with Lewis Morgan on the bench. Somewhere in the stands sat seasoned veteran Scott Sinclair wondering what exactly he had did to be neglected on this most important of nights.

Starting the game with the away goal advantage, Celtic didn’t quite defend but decided more to just look about the place. Cluj smelled blood and Broony ( deary me) let his man stride away and chip the ball over where Calmac, out of his natural position, was understandably slow to react and the Cluj player outjumped him and it was 1-0 the visitors.

In response we hardly huffed and puffed, it was more a grabbing of sore ankles as Cluj kicked everything in a professional clinical manner, and we ended the first half 1-0 down.

A lot of Celtic fans were surprised when no changes were made but we came out brightly and wee Jamesy finished a lovely move to equalise. Suddenly the game was back on and then up stepped Eddy to slot home the ball into the corner following a stramash between 2 Cluj defenders. We were now in front and the place was rocking.

Then they got a corner.

The ball came in, over the heads of everybody and for some unknown reason, Broony raised his arm and tried to punch it away. Madness and it was 2-2.

The Eddy and Christie show then combined for Christie to score a great goal, there were about 7 passes and dribbles between them before Christie slotted home what we all thought was the winner.

That was until Cluj simply shot at goal, Bain saved but a Cluj player waiting patiently simply hit the ball high into the net. The game was done and Cluj put a cherry on top with a last kick of the ball goal to win on the night.  Celtic tried bringing on Griff and even Bayo, hows that for just going fucking mental! but to no avail.

Cluj celebrated as the whistle went, as they should. Sure they played dirty at times but they deserved to win given we deserved to lose with such a self inflicted execution of a disaster plan.

Cluj now move onto face Sparta Prague and confirmed European football this season whilst we now look to face AIK Stockholm, if they prevail, to scrape into the Europa League of Duds and the pressure really is on Lenny and also now on The Board.

More on Lenny later in ratings but as for Lawwell and the Board, well…

Who actually identified and who sanctioned the purchases of Julienn and Bolingoli if they cant play?

Anyone citing “Julien is just getting up to speed” should look at Elhamed at right back who has ran his heart out since arriving despite having not played for 6 weeks before his arrival.

Peter Lawwell must also clarify what are the priorities ..is it Hotels, Festivals, Marketing titbits, Increased revenue and account growth or is it a robust team ( including a quality Management team and Scouting network ) ready for every challenge whenever it presents itself…how many Augusts must we the fans rant and rave before someone at Celtic FC HQ take our message on board?

Lawwell now faces quite the dilemma. By delaying purchases up until now, he may have hoped to snap up a EPL loannee or use CL and confirmed European football with a win last night to entice some talent to Celtic Park.

How many good players are wanting to come now?

The result of such delay tactics now mean that we will be reduced to young loannees or basic decent journeymen who will use this desperation to extort even bigger wages and bonuses from our club…supply and demand and all that.

You can guarantee that even the Kilmarnocks and Aberdeens will be adding a wee 20-50% onto any prices for Taylor or McKenna as everyone in football knows Lawwell has to be seen doing something to appease a very angry customer base.

It was a long night and a tough sleep for a lot of Celts out there last night. In the cold light of day, the anger still burns and the disappointment still yearns.

A lot of folk are worried about the 9 and heading to Ibrox in 2 weeks in such a state.

Its over to all of the folk at Celtic to step up…Im not sure what more the fans can do or Eddy and Christie and to an extent Ajer and Forrest, but everyone else needs to up their game.

Ratings

Bain – Coming under pressure now and a lot of folk looking at Gordon or AN Other getting a shot between the sticks. Came and gathered well but theres a few doubts creeping in and noticeably more punting rather than placing with the kick outs. 5

Elhamed – Tried his best and got stuck in. A good decent purchase who doesn’t hide and is still finding his fitness. 6

Ajer – Tried his best alongside Jozo but the defence was all over the place in reality and stood off at their 3rd goal. 4

Jozo – Like Ajer, tried and had a good header saved by their keeper but not a good night for the defence – 4

Calmac – A game of 2 halves. First half was awful at left back and left flat footed on a few occasions and lucky to avoid a penalty. 2nd half got up the park and tried to attack 4

Ntcham – Ran about the middle of the park but not really influencing the game as much as he should have 4

Forrest – Scored the opener and tried getting balls across to Eddy but was facing 2 and 3 at a time. 5

Broony – Awful. A yard of the pace, a part in all their goals and the handball for the penalty spoke more of frustration than desperation. A few fans now wondering if its time for alternatives to be considered 2

Johnson – Thrown right back in by Lenny. Tried a few dribbles but final ball and decision making not quite there 4

Christie – Oh for 8 players with the attitude of Ryan Christies in the side. Chased and harried and scored. Hopefully not too many Scouts were watching as now our major player 7

Edouard – Dull first half where couldn’t find his touch but a great 2nd half. Goal into the corner and lovely play to set up Christie. Will a French side come in for him soon? 7

Subs

Griff – Had one chance but sadly headed around the keeper rather than over 3

Morgan – Ran down the wing and got balls into the box. Sadly we still had Griff on the bench and Eddy not the player for sliding a 6 yard cross home. Lots of folk seem to want to make Morgan a whipping boy but he is good at getting to the line and ball in..not his fault there is no one there. 4

Bayo – I kid you not…Lennys desperation there for all to see. Not sure if he even touched it. 2

Manager

Lenny dared to say the team set up, ie Calmac at left back was not influential on the game. He is kidding no-one. That was an awful decision to make and even with reduced personnel choices, a 3-5-1-1 or a 5-3-1-1 would have clearly been better than taking your midfield engine and throwing him to the wolves.  If Lenny cant see the knock on affects of that move then I fear his days are limited.

All he had to do was stay in front in the tie. Not confuse his side with a weird set up. Not change a winning team. Not drop a guy you had played in last 7 games and hadn’t lost any of them.  The side in the first half looked like strangers and that all lies with the Manager. No changes were positive and the use of 3 forward subs rather than shoring up when in the lead was abject neglect. I know he couldn’t compensate for Broony having a nightmare but he has to be clinical with subs at the right time and get the right men on the park at the right time.

We all know the Board could and must do better but last nights game was lost by the Manager. Pure and simple.

The question now is what does he do in response?

All the Treble Treble Stepping in for Brendan Goodwill has gone.

The pressure is on and it is real pressure, not just paper talk.

Many fans want him ( and Lawwell) out but that wont happen.

For now.

Lenny needs to find a winning side and get through the next play-off. He then needs to ensure he does not LOSE at ibrox. He doesn’t need to go there and win…he just needs to show he can steady the ship and that progress from last nights debacle is possible.

Failure to get through Stockholm and Sevco will surely see him reflect on his position.

Who saw this coming when we were all celebrating scoring goals for fun against SPFL fodder?

Not Lenny or Peter, that’s for sure.

Agree 100% with all of that. No excuses from Lawwell. We sold £27m worth of talent last season plus had the VVD £7M yet spent nothing last summer. We knew KT was leaving at the end of June. So we should have spent a minimum of £20m at the start of this summer to get players in and fit for this game.
When Turnbull fell through we should have signed another centre mid, Ncham is a world beater against poor SPL teams but that it.
In the past 10 years I think we have had 1 decent transfer window. Its simply not good enough.

Could I please make 3 points?
1.That ref was an utter disgrace 2. The opposition were dirty b.stards over the two legs and I hope Prague kick them all over the pitch and out of the C.L. 3. Celtic will s.it themselves at Liebrox especially with the lack of fans and Gerrard will be rubbing his hands at the prospect of even Morelos scoring against ‘defending’ of the standard of shambolic….

In my opinion, Cluj made it seem that they were an average side in the mind games before the game, Neil fell for it by his team selection and formation, the board have a lot to blame by not supporting the team by acquisitions to strengthen the team…disappointed but still love the Celtic

Its a shambles and has been for a while. Its the reason the rat left the sinking ship. Lenny was never going to be the answer to what we want but suited Lawwell and Desmond to a T. Until Lawwell’s bonus is based on CL qualification it will always be so. Celtic PLC not Celtic FC.

“Bayo, hows that for just going fucking mental!” pretty much sums up Lenny’s performance last night.

Where to start? An income of £66.08 million pounds on player sales from 2017, compensation for a management team and Virgil’s sell on clause.
Some £27.035 on new players coming in, again from 2017.
Seven players let go after their contracts ended and four on loan players returned to their parent club. What does that say? it say’s loud and proud a complete lack of ambition, is what it says.
A manager appointed in the showers without anyone being interviewed, not saying he’s not a good manager, but if you supposedly run the football club as a business, then surely you must be professional about it and utilise the correct procedures.
An accountant who doubles up as a DoF. is that being professional?
A list as long as your excellent article on the game last night say’s all that needs to be said. Ambition? there is no ambition and that’s only for starters. A Celtic board that turns a Nelson eye to a corrupt governing body and a criminal club, dis-fucking- gusting.

I don’t think that it would be the worst thing in the world if we don’t get through this Europa qualifier. Priority should be the league now – nothing else matters.

That’s how PL thinks and that’s why so may fans are angry. Let’s accept we’re in a Micky Mouse league. If in doubt look at the Huns. Their team is full of guys who cant get a game in the second.third tier in England, that would get no where near our first team yet they are second in the league and could give us a fright in the next game. With the resources we have we should be significantly more ambitious.

Chris Sutton has got this shambles spot on…… time for a change, yes we know that we can not be guaranteed to win.
But it’s the manner of which we seem to be doing it in year after year, in Europe The board need to step up and spend the money or ship out and let someone else who has the potential to help in.

Doc

Who saw this coming? Those that thought the 1-1 in the first leg was a bad result did. Why did we lose? Simple, Petrescu is a good manager, he identified our weaknesses and he exploited them.

Elhamed seems to be getting plaudits but I think he is very poor. His positioning is so poor that he might as well not be on the pitch when facing a long ball, when someone knocks the ball past him he can’t use his body so resorts to using his arms and, worst of all, his marking, off the ball and concentration are catastrophic.

I hard, albeit from a guy in a pub, that Sinclair is the new Bobo Balde.

As for Lennon, we can see, with our groundhog day transfer window, why it took him so long to take the job. He was already a legend, he has nothing to gain and everything to lose and is finding that out the hard way.

If, a big if, we win our next qualifier then what are the chances of a fullback reunion and we get drawn against Tierney and Lustig?

Doc

Are you kidding? Lustig’s positioning, at right back, is world class. Plenty wanted him sold last season, now we are seeing how moronic that was.

The only times his positioning was poor when he was played out of position. Play McGregor out of position and its the managers fault, play Lustig out of position and it Lustig’s fault.

Have lost count how many times he has cost us in Europe with casual slack passing , inability to win a 50-50 and easily robbed of the ball. And last night the handball ffs. He is a good player, but not as good as he thinks he is and , unfortunately, only in Scotland.

where Lawell takes responsibility in this is appointing lennon in the first place. lennon has spent money and then left the players on the bench. what is the point of that?

no one made him start Calmac at left back either.

lennon is clueless. being a celtic man is not enough. he is tactically clueless.

we were beaten by an inferior side with fuck all money. this was the financial equivalent of us losing to PSG over 2 legs.

its all very well blaming lawell for this but his big error was bringing back lenny full time. he gave lenny money to spend so lenny spent it and put the players on the bench. he then put calmac at LB. a proven failure.

the substitutions were bizarre. bain was very poor and broony was worse. ntcham? was he even playing? the centre backs looked like they had met on the bus on the way to the ground. no sign of bringing on our 7m euro CB.

this is the equivalent of Celtic putting PSG out over 2 legs. I doubt Cluj have spent 7m accumalated over their entire history.

This season the spent £540k on two players, holding mid that was on the bench and the centre half that made a mess of it for our goal. Last season they spent £18k (not a typo).

Catch yourself on Charlie. “Had the keeper saved the penalty??” You’re suggesting the guy at the back post was more likely to score than the penalty taker.

Broonie had a shocker and not for the first time. He was constantly off the pace and he isn’t the dominant force he once was. The hand ball is a telling sign that the game was passing him by.

Win as a team, lose as a team. The lack of alacrity in identifying and concluding signings not for the first time to meet CL deadlines has not helped.
However the blame for last night rests solely with manager and coaching staff. No surprise, we started slowly and play was ponderous, a constant refrain and recognised by current manager and previous..but it continues. The team selection and reasoning for dropping Bolingoli, playing CalMac in that position and N’tcham for added flair was idiotic.
I think all this will do is create divisions and rancour in dressing room as players not being trusted and others sacrificed to be play in positions they are ill suited.
The other elephant in the room is Scott Brown a legend and that is where the difficulty arises. I think he has been on the wane for the last 18 months and should be game managed now as I feel he lacks the legs/energy for that position, also he does slow up distribution. It takes a manager with cojones to phase out legends.
Overall for first time in years I’m worried about SleveryCo especially if we continue with Bain as first choice keeper and Broony as constant starter. Others have been quite rightly removed for inconsistent/average performances, consistency required.
We need before September window; GK, LB, RB and that longing for another Lubo/ Naka “type” needs to be sated.

If I was Lawwell I`d spend another £50 million on players immaterial of their ability. Even Barcelona would be wary of coming to Parkhead with £80 million worth of players on the bench with Lennon, Kennedy and O`Dea writing wee notes beside them.

Never mind, there are more important things happening in the world. It will all be forgotten about in a couple of weeks.

Much as I’d love to see us splash the cash, and god knows we need the reinforcements, someone needs to convince me the £12m we have spent already has not been pished up the wall. Btw that’s your Tierney money, Celtic knew he was going, we don’t spend £3m on back up left backs, well not on purpose anyway.

I am seriously concerned about this season, much as we love to laugh at the sevconians, I don’t see them dropping as many points as last season. The 4 games against them will be all important. I am not confident we can go there and get a result.

Worrying times.

Broony was poor last night because calmac was not playing along side him.

That was the managers fault. I read somewhere his excuse for not playing Boli was he wanted a place for Ntcham in the team. Whit!!!

The signs were there for all to see that we should have put on a defender (julien) or at least a holding midfielder (bitton) when we took the lead.
Cluj needed to score we had eddy and Ryan who could have hit them on the break. but no we put on a like for like winger.

Weemac at left back works in the left back position, the issue is that Ntcham is only an attack minded midfielder. Christie can do a job as a box to box midfielder, but there wasn’t a second deep lying midfielder on the park. You can’t play Christie as your number 10 if Ntcham is on the field. WE HAVE TOO MANY ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS! Anyway…. We need to go and buy a propper deep lying playmaker and another Ball winning midfielder. Right now we only have 2.5 deep lying midfielders in the squad. Of course Ajer can play there, but this is Scotland and if you are tall you are a defender…..

Elhamed was involved in every goal last night, that’s why he was the worst.

1. Marking inside for long throw, throw cleared into touch, Elhamed switches off as the winger moves wide to get on the end of a quick shy. When the winger gets the ball, Brown moves to close down as Elhamed is idle. Winger puts an accurate cross in.

2. Makes a meal of it and concedes corner.

3. Has given up marking his man, is barely jogging as the winger he’s supposed to be marking pounces on Bain’s poor save.

4. Has given up marking his man again and stands and watches his man run on to a hit-and-hope overhead kick.

With a good right back, we don’t lose any of those goals. At one point the winger had about ¼ of the pitch to himself and would have had the easiest of chances if McGregor and Christie hadn’t doubled up and won the ball before the obvious pass was made. Elhamed also switched off at a shy twice in the away leg, giving away two goal scoring chances which, fortunately, Cluj made a mess of.

My rating – 2 – OK going forward but worse than a man down in defence. He wasn’t beaten by skill but by his own failure to do the very basics of the game.

Charlie I think the huns would have taken care of that mob last night that’s the hurtful part.
Every season we have seen.our team become weaker
Even though we are treble treble winners we are going backwards. We saw it against Motherwell we are very poor defensively it needs sorting quickly. I also think Boli would have got in the headers to stop the penalty and the opener but we will never know. Don’t play a flat back 4 if you don’t have a left back it was stupid.
Omitting Sinclair for Johnstone or Morgan also crazy must be something wrong there. Is it because he was a Rodgers signing?

we are a club in a massive decline

we have a manager who after seeing how ineffective McGregor is at left back played him at left back, not to mention our best mid player

we have a manager who signed 2 defenders for 10 million and had them on the bench for the biggest game of the season

a manager who appears to have succumbed to fan/media chat re the left back (talk about panty wetting)

we have a manager hell bent on driving Sinclair out the club (20 goals a season) a proper professional who doesn’t drink, gamble etc etc. that in place of a young lad with no experience and a st mirren player too

the board will not escape the furore, but lennon has spent 10+ million this season, had Julien at the club for 6 weeks but couldn’t get him fit?

the players have already had more time off in the last 7 weeks than they have had over the course of a full season

we are in a massive decline, and its only going to get worse

sevco will pump that defence, of that I am sure

you all started creaming yourself putting 7 past relegation fodder that Montrose beat…. so its a bit rich going on about the scum for scoring goals

we all said lets see where we are after last night, and this is it

Running scared of “Rangers” dreary me what a fickle and defeatist crew. Over this season Celtic will win the league with room to spare as we have for the last eighth seasons. The misfits and kids at the Ibrox club flatter to deceive. One lose againstbthe Romanian Champions and suddenly Gerard’s Jokers we scaring us ?? Jezz

weered tHe fans are entitled to know who is picking the signings and who sanctions the signings. Congerton Lawell Hammond Lenny ?

Lenny called it wrong simple as. At 3_2 a calm head should have prevailed and Boli and Jullien or Bitton introduced to block all paths. It should have been easy to do. With Lennon having no proper number 2 another mystery by the way as Gary Parker went with him everywhere. Lenny was caught up in the disco lights and wasn’t thinking on how to close the game down.
Weered I don’t even think we have a scout?

I’m glad its Desi’s day to give an honest assessment rather than yet another of Ralph’s daily diarrhoea diatribe blaming everything on Rodgers and excusing Lennon.

Personally I thought Ntcham was okay and tried to get things going but had no help.

Although focus will be on how we capitulated in the 2nd half, I thought we were extremely fortunate to be only 1 goal down at HT and it was appalling management not to address the clear and obvious issues as the 1st half progressed.

Glad to hear it and hopefully he continues to tell it truthfully and not keep bitching about our ex-manager who bears no responsibility for our current predicament.

haha, hes not the worst for that

remember according to some, Rodgers is a fraud

‘lenny’ fails at the first attempt for the ucl and its the board that gets it

The board deserve their shellacking as they appointed Lennon (in the showers!).

Why; because the mutually consented ex-manager of a relegation threatened Hibs was what was required or because he’d simply toe the line of our downsizing and leave our CE to play DoF without complaint?

Jimmybee, I agree 2 defensive subs to ‘shut up shop’ should have come on after Christie scored. Also the Calmac left back is pure stupidity better having Hayes or Bolingoli back there. The other thing for me is Brown looking off the pace mentally and physically. He has not been rested since the season started (everyone else has) and it showed him up last night. Poor decision making before and during the game.
All very avoidable. The defensive problems were there to see vs Motherwell on Saturday.

Wow, never saw that Cluj scoreline coming. After 3-2 I thought we had the nous to see it out. McGregor was my left back of choice simply because I prefer him to Hayes and just assumed Boli wouldn’t even be on the bench. By the way, has Gutman disappeared into the Twilight Zone? And Perez? Most American players are good athletes and technically sound. What’s up Lenny? We lost our nearly- best back four: Lustig/Benkovic/Boyata/Tierney but I am puzzled why Julienne is not playing. Surely Sinclair has proven more than Morgan and Mikey? Here’s a revolutionary thought for some Fenians on this site. It is better to spend nothing than to spend £10 million on two players who are now judged not to be capable of playing in the most important match of the season!
Here is my best 11, as it stands:
Bain
El Hamed/Ajer/Julienne/Boli
Ntcham/McGregor
Forrest/Christie/Sinclair
Edouard
I’m no longer convinced 4-2-3-1 is the way to go.
Let’s see more of Bayo/Shved/Julienne I’ve always thought the Europa League is about our level and that is still a very high level.
Rest Broonie. Let Boli show what he can do. I love The Celtic but hate it like hell when we play badly and are outsmarted. Dan Petrescu certainly had Lenny’s number last night.I told my wife not to worry because Celtic won’t lose at home in front of nearly 60,000 fans.

Devoy i think Gordon is a better keeper than Bain.
For me we haven’t replaced what we had with better.
Lustig far better than El Hamed
Izzy I won’t even insult KT far better than Boli
Benkovic and Boyata far better than Ajer and Jozo and Jullien.
There lies the problem.
Middle to front no probs Broony had a nightmare one of those things but Lenny really needs to take the blame. He said he didn’t know why we started so badly well Neil you changed the back 4 again from Saturday consistency is key ffs.

Devoy Ntcham is not a deep sitting midfielder. Had we played 4231 last night we would’ve had x2 players to cover the attacking runs into the half spaces. We would’ve only conceded 2 goals. Instead we played an attacking 4141 or 41221 with both Ntcham and Ryan spending more time going forward than being mid fielders.

Celtic have been drifting for years since the death of Rankers, Liewell has no got a clue about footie, just counting coins.
Strachan walked, Lenny walked we got Delilah who carried the can for Eoropean performances.
Brenda was looking for a way back into footie, ideal answer for Liewell, although his European stats are the worst any manager has achieved, at the first opportunit he buggered off.
Lenny was offered the poisoned chalice, he grabbed it with both hands, a temporary appointment, but again cheap option it became permanent.
We have no spine in the team,
Brownie deceives to flatter he is a plastic Hardmanhis best days are over,
Simo never a good player has no commitment, fearful of plastic pitches
Bain does his best but not quality
Lenny picked the team he is to blame for the shambles especially Cluj a team tha flattes to deceive, knocked out b a Luxembourg team, remind you of anyone.
Seriously concerned about the upcoming game at the Crumbledome.
The usual candidates on here excusing the inexcusable, my first match was in 1958, I suffered the nineties, but this mob flatter to deceive, and the Board keep counting the shekels

Devoy, Gutman looked really fast and put in some good hard tackles, also good on the ball with very few bad passes. I watched all the friendlies with interest. I also wonder what is going on with him? As for Brown he looks tired to me. Maybe we will see him replaced this season.
The ref was piss poor making mistakes all over the place. He gives a throw in when the free kick should have been retaken and a yellow card given the Cluj player (when standing 3ft from Christie taking free kick). Also gives us a corner when Forrest shoots and hits Elhamed. ??
Also agree with Doc, Elhamed needs to work on his awareness positioning.

Gutman has not been called up and cannot get a proper work permit without serious sucking up to the MLS. MLS like to keep the young players in the US for as long as possible so it’s not happening. He and Perez need called up.
