Celtic Diary Sunday August 11: Don’t Worry About a Thing

….cos every little things gonna be alright.

As long as Celtic start the game at the same time as their opponents, and as long as Scott Bain doesn’t have a lie down or a sit down when someone tries to score.

Fir Park hasn’t been the happiest of hunting grounds for Celtic, but after a shaky start the steelmen got both barrels yesterday. Celtic cruised to a win in another seven goal thriller, this time allowing the opposition to score either side of the five registered to the hoops.

Admit it, though.

Early doors you were worried, and when Motherwell took the lead you wanted to send all the new players back and take Scott Bain off.

However, Celtic soon settled and when Motherwell players were heard to shout “Get out of his way before you hurt yourself ” as Kris Ajer ran the length of the park to equalise , it was only a matter of time.

Celtic had woken up, and Motherwell were being put to sleep. Goals from Leigh Griffiths, who spotted a gap in the defensive wall and simply drilled the ball through it, James Forrest, Ryan Christie and Oddsone Edouard completed the rout before Liam Donnelly grabbed an injury time consolation for the Well.

Twelve goals in the first two league games. Last season it took until October 7 to register that amount, the difference largely down to Celtic dropping the sidieways football of the previous incumbent.

Add that to the goals scored in the qualifiers and you can see that we seem to have got the hang of going forward.

Olivier Ntcham was the outstanding player, taking control of the midfield, whilst Kris Ajer continued to go from strength to strength…one or two others , Morgan-if only he would look up before crossing, and Bolingoli, who lacks confidence, just need a wee bit of time.

For James Forrest, it was another milestone in an outstanding Celtic career. He’s now the first Celt to score in eleven consecutive league campaigns since Paul McStay, who managed 16, McGrory did 14.

James Forrest could surpass a goalscoring feat achieved by Jimmy McGrory….

And he still hasn’t got a song !

There are one or two suggestions, this one , for instance…

Slimshady

@Slimshady1961

Replying to

Did he beat the Huns slowly
Did he leave Gerrard lowly
Did we sound the death march as James lowered them down?
Did we hear a new Green Brigade chorus?
“There is only one Jamesy Forrest”
Or..
There’s a starman playing on the right,
His name is Jamesy forrest
And you know he’s dynamite
Or…
Hey James, don’t make us sad
Take a bad pass, and make it better.
The minute you walk out onto the park
Then you can start to make it better
(Thats enough-Ed )
Then again, every time someone gets a song they sod off to another club, so perhaps we should give it a miss.
After the game, there was a bit if a to do when Scott Sinclair left the pitch.. an argument ensued with a groundsman which is apparently a continuation of a previous row. The groundsman appears to have been upset by the way Sinclair treated the pitch, and decided to have a moan.
Takes his job seriously that fellow…
There was good news for the Motherwell maintenance team , however, as no disabled shelters were harmed during yesterdays match..
Image
Manager Neil Lennon seemed pleased with the way his charges have started the domestic campaign…

“The only source of frustration was the way we started the game, we invited pressure we didn’t need to invite and conceded a poor goal.

“Once we eradicated that and started playing the ball forward quickly we were absolutely outstanding.

“I know from my own experience how difficult it can be coming straight off the back of a Champions League trip but we looked really powerful.

“There’s a ruthlessness about us at the moment, good power in the team, good pace. Five goals away from home at any stage of the season you have got to be pleased, but particularly in the circumstances on the back of a really tough night in Romania.”

He also cleverly kept his squad on their toes, with a wee bit of psychology that will have them all still fighting for a place in the team…

“I don’t have a first-choice eleven, I shouldn’t have,”

“These guys are quality players, it’s not like they are back-up players. These are first-team players – Griffiths is a Scottish international with a proven track record of goals, and Ntcham is a £5million midfield player who has shown he is a £5million player, probably more. I had no hesitation in playing them.

“We had to change the back four with Hatem and Jozo being out and that might have caused us a few teething problems early on. But as the game grew we looked very assured and strong.”

Onwards to tuesday then, and Cluj rested a few players yesterday, an indication of how seriously they should be taken when they come to Glasgow
Image
Image
Eleven, in fact…
This game, where a win would assure group stage European football of one sort or another, is not finished yet.
Celtic cannot afford to start like they did yesterday, but to be fair as long as the goals keep coming and the team grows in confidence it should be okay…
Meanwhile, in the EPL, there was further evidence that the game as a spectator sport is dying…
Daniel Mawer
@skintnortherner
Today, at half time I was told by an ‘under cover security guard’ that if I continued to text about the football match at the KCOM stadium I’d be ejected from the ground.
At half time a man in casual gear followed by a steward, came up to me and said ‘tell me what this says’ holding a badge up that said security. I said (spoiler alert) ‘…security?’
He then explained he’d been watching me text throughout the first half, he asked what I’d been texting (in a not so friendly manner)
I felt on edge telling a stranger what I’ve been texting, felt a bit invasive, and I felt uncomfortable saying I’d been innocently texting opinions on the match and my thoughts on what was happening to friends and family
my Dad explained we text friends the score. The man said if we continued to do so we’d be ejected from the ground. When we asked why, he said there’s trouble with people notifying betting companies/or gamblers of events at a match so they could cash out/make a bet void.
So basically he was assuming I was some sort of gamblers informant at the KC Stadium (when I was just texting my girlfriend dumb stuff about Tom Eaves’s hair)
I couldn’t get my head around it. I explained Hull City tweet details of the match faster than I ever could due to having stadium WiFi, along with

and

both tweeting details faster than I ever could (unless the security guard thinks I’m psychic)

I pointed out that thousands of fans text and tweet throughout the match regarding the game, the club even asks you to vote for a man of the match via social media…
I asked ‘what if I text a minute after an event has happened, or even 15 mins?’ Mr security man said we shouldn’t be texting about the match at all. And that this has been stated upon entering the ground (not true) and that these texts can’t include time of goals or goal scorers
Image
I knew this was a lie, I asked how he could have possibly known what I was texting about, to which he didn’t have an answer. That made me feel incredibly watched. To reiterate these are private texts, one of which I sent to my girlfriend and me mum
I explained I’d text score updates and opinions for years to which he replied it was a new thing starting this year, and as it’s the first match of the new season he didn’t want to kick me out having not known these new ‘rules’…
he softened at this point as if this was all a nice chilled run of the mill conversation (never happened to me in 20 years of watching live football)
I didn’t text throughout the second half, my phone vibrated with updates and I didn’t have the nerve to look cos I’m a geek and a stickler for the rules I felt a bit on edge for the rest of the game and subsequently didn’t text anyone
I’ve been following city since I was 7, home and away nearly every game since I was 13, and not once has anyone told me not to text updates privately to friends.
The game in England relies heavily on tv money, and tv subscritpions cannot possibly fund the outlay alone. Hence the reliance on betting to make up the shortfall or turn it profitable.
A change in kick off time for an EPL match can affect betting markets by millions of pounds. No wonder they are paranoid, there’s a lot at stake.
But when the corporate world interferes with a mans day at the football, its time to call it quits.
Speaking of English football, one player has just awoken from a terrible dream….
Image
Over on the dark side of town, there was another example of how the media works in Scotland, and how even the slightest ray of hope can be brightened to give good news to the bears…
Derek Clark on twitter began to fantasise about James Tavernier in an England shirt…and it sort of got out of hand…
Image
Presumably around the same time that all the other right backs south of the border have woken up in the morning to find someone has stolen their legs.
Image
What for ?
Image
Oh dear…and right on cue, the Daily Record leaps on the “story ” …
Image
Except…
Image
The Record factchecker clearly still on his break, as he has been for the last thirty years or so.
The BBC at least got one right…
Image
Yesterday, we had this …

Where does Sky get its ‘pundits’? Who picked that sly, bitter and grudging gang for the Motherwell game? Maybe they’re well aware of the ABC culture up here and just want to reflect the Scottish norm.

This is not an anti- big team thing. It never applied to sevco during the long years of fraud. BTW, which Scottish broadcast journalist has ever called out sevco’s 9-in-a-row as even questionable?
You’d have as much chance as they had of finding one good man or woman in Sodom?

A good result considering the travel back from Romania, now onwards and upwards.

Just watched the first half of Leicester vs Wolves and the home team style is typically BR. Sideways football followed by a punt out to the wings. Seventy percent possession to Leicester and one chance created.

All of that expensive talent on show and the game is no mote exciting than many SPL games.

The Wolves LB/left sided CB is impressive, Bolly. Wish we had him.

77 goals in the whole of last years league campaign (38) games, 12 goals in two games, reinforce’s what Rebus has said ^ is the more direct approach key to scoring more goals? There is no doubt IMO that the slow out-ball from the back allowed the opposition teams time to regroup, giving it time to set itself up in defence, puting more obstacles in our forwards way. But again IMO there is a place for sideways passing, because it surely does tire out opposing forward players, especially if they are big agricultural types like yesterday and it can also be a time waster (game management) and give’s our players time to re-energise. Goals win games… Griffiths goal target for Celtic forwards 100+ …. Hope you and yours are good Rebus.

Sideways football often gets a deserved outcome; the tossers playing it have ‘great’ possession and then get stuffed. Hurrah!
I say “deserved” as it is dire to play, dire to watch and carries risk in your own half too. Fucking anti-football and shouldn’t be tolerated, not anywhere except when we’re 3 or 4 up at Ibrox and decide to start taking the piss out of ‘them’.

Wonder how we would have felt if We had lost the cup – whose team would it have been – or the league for that matter. ? That said we won so we’ll never know how we would have reacted. I’d say you have to be in the dugout to claim the prize. I agree BR was a great manager and we did extremely well. I also think the manner of his departure indicated an lack of integrity and was disrespectful to the club. I’m pretty pleased with the start of this season so far and enjoying the different style of play.

We have enjoyed great success and every trophy we win is something to cherish. Brendan had his style as did Ronnie and Lenny has his.
We have 8 in a row because of them and back to back trebles. Sometimes it’s just important to win 1_0 than 5-0 so it doesn’t matter to me if the league is won with 70 goals or 100 goals as long as it has green and white ribbons on it that’s all that matters to me.
The war is on the board must be ready to support the fenian army moving forward, Peter its over to you.

Bgbhoy, I don’t know why you kick out at anything CS writes on here and show negativity about Neil Lennon. Oh, and I’d argue YOUR stats. Neil Lennon “delivered” our latest treble, the Treble Treble as he ensured we won both the League and the SC.
There’s no arguing with fact, regardless of wherever that fact emanates. Do yourself and all of us a favour and get behind NFL, a Tim like no other I’d venture to say, given what he’s had to absorb in Scotland. 🙂

Scottish Football is based on L.I.E.S. the great lie that one club has an unbroken history. The other major Lie is that, that club’s unbroken history contains the major honours that, that club won during its time in existence and furthermore can be added too. That club committed fraud by cheating us out of money’s due to us in participating in the 2011-12 C.L. Qualifiers. When a fraud is committed it should be charged for its crime’s and face a trial by an officer of the law. It is repugnant that a sport, any sport is tarnished by lies and criminality. When a convicted criminal is allowed to run a football club and is unchallenged by other clubs, then you know that Scottish football, a sport enjoyed by many, is finished.

Jimmy,

You raise interesting questions. Is winning everything? Not sure I can answer that myself. I certainly want Celtic to win a game when I watch.

However, what about winning the Celtic way….The way of the Lisbon Lions vs Inter Milan. Attack, attack with flair! Glorious when it works. Mind you Inter wanted Celtic to play that way as they expected to catch us on the break. However, apart from their goal, they never got the chance to breakout.

I realise that the economics of the game have changed and that It is difficult for Celtic to compete with the Barcas and Juventus of the game.

What I will say is that Celtic compete on two levels…..domestically and in Europe. Domestically, I expect Celtic to play with flair, as we are doing now, and win. Latterly, with BR were winning but not playing with flair.

In Europe, my expectations are different. We should be able to compete with the second tier European teams, from Porto and Ajax down to Malmo and AEK. Play the Celtic way against them with a bit more concern for our backdoor. When it comes to the top tier teams, more often than not, we shall lose, but there is always the 2-1 result vs Barca, from time to time. Against these teams we need to be smarter but still able to shock them. Sitting in and getting a doing is not the way forward. Strachan, MON and Lenny were able to figure out ways of giving us a chance in these games. BR never did, for all his trebles. Nor will he at Leicester if they make Europe.

I say this as a former BR fan but he blew my goodwill by the manner in which he left the club. Good riddance, I say.
Now, I was not enamoured by the appointment of Lenny, but so far, the football is good. Let’s see what happens if and when you tackle better teams.

Rebus as per your posts are always greatly recieved and appreciated by me and im sure many others on here.
BR made sure we never gave the ball away of course some players just weren’t good at it and it caused us trouble. But he tried to coach them to play it back if the pass forward wasnt on. I watched on Saturday and we lumped it a few times which brought needless pressure onto our back line.
Times passes which were 5 yards away easier somehow went 50 across the park.
There is a fine delicate line and im sure we all have our own opinions which makes it great discussion. I’m happy with what Brendan taught our players im equally happy that Lenny wants it up the park as quickly as possible. But on Saturday only I may add quality sides will take advantage.
Hope you and your family are well.

Say what you want Rodgers left the club/team in good shape
Can’t say the same for Ronnie or Lenny or Strachan or Mowbray. He was however found wanting in Europe with his naive tactics which tells me he is limited to British football. Lenny is a bit more savvy in Europe. The hunchallenge however should be taken seriously. They’re not far behind I’d say it’s going to be a tight one this year. Maybe a case of dread against them away or tight losses. I think we should just have the edge as far as consistency is concerned. Boli will be targeted if he continues with his current form. He has more mistakes in him than Efron and Boyata put together on current evidence. Maybe Austrian football is a bit different to ours and it’s a case of adjustment. He has the physicality and pace but so did defdryk and Ambrose

Draws not dread

Mike

The question still to be answered is why Lenny left the first time round. We speculate only those in the nose, nose the real reason why he left. Its generally assumed by us, that he left because he was being denied sufficient funds by our DoF. to strengthen the team. He say’s that he left with good memories and didn’t burn his bridges with the DoF. and judging by the welcome sense of relief by said DoF. he returned into the Celtic fold. While I disagree with any appointment being made in the shower and with the unprofessional approach taken by two jobs P.L. He still deserved his chance to do the job he clearly loves. It became clear that when he left us the first time, he didn’t have another job to go to, perhaps it was unsurprisingly his state of mind after his disgraceful treatment by criminal elements within the Hun support. It must have come as a shock to him that he wasn’t instantly employed by another F.C. down south. The downsizing going on at Celtic is massive, no more loanee players, many players released due to their contracts ending, very, very few new players coming in, a massive bank balance, no replacement managerial team like under Brendan, Lenny took on J.K. as assistant and D.Duff, so WTF is going on, what is coming down the line, a stadium upgrade perhaps, the cost of the hotel and museum at £18.00 mill. OK Marvyn Whats going on, whats going on…

Mike,

You are correct there is something being planned, but what? IMHO, the most likely is the hotel. They wish to minimise the debt on the project hence the cash hoarding. Of course, this is just a guess

There are other possibilities such as a potential liability over the abuse of boys, championed by some of the media. Maybe, but unlikely, the club may see the possibility of entering another league, either in England or Europe. One of the reasons that a business stockpiles cash is to boost share value….perhaps someone wants to cash out!

Who knows!

The last few months have been very difficult personally. My wife was diagnosed with a form of breast cancer in May…….a highly treatable form.

The experience both challenges and changes your priorities. Celtic faded into the distance a bit but now I am bouncing back with increasing interest in what is happening with the club.

Lenny looks like he is fighting against the wind Heres hoping the players we have deliver on the domestic front at least I feel however that Europe looks a step too far i hope im wrong though.

Rebus, Best Wishes to yourself and your wife; when one is hurt, both suffer and IMHO that’s part of the ‘contract’. Best Wishes to your wee grandson too and Welcome back to the ‘madhoose’.

As I said a few weeks ago I pursued this issue about Lenny and Lawwell and I was told they were close and remained so after Lenny left. I often wonder if Lenny being unemployed when BR left was just a coincidence. That said couldn’t have been a better person to come in.

Our left side is the weakest part of our team.
El Hamed will do ok at right back but even better in a back 3. Boli i think given gime will come on but sevco could really punish us down that side. Lets hope a keft back of quality is found quickly.
Either that or we are back to Calmac or Johnny Hayes at ibrokes?

Jimmy et al,

I find Calmac difficult to assess. No doubt he is a fine player but he plays a simple game…….short passing, usually, to keep the ball moving forward.

Anyone clever enough to remember the sixties, will recall the late John White of Spurs and Scotland. I am talking about a team that included Gemmel, McNeil/McKinnon, Crerand, Baxter, Johnstone/Henderson, White, Law, Wilson/Auld. They could beat anyone on their game, but their weakness was they were a team of individual greats who each wanted to win 5he game on their own. White was the glue that held them together. He linked defence and attack and was usually in the correct position at the right time to make the link work.

Tragically he died from a lightning strike while playing golf. The Scottish team was never the same again in my view…the cohesion was gone. However, during a game you would hardly notice White, which was why he was nicknamed the Ghost. He did not have the obvious skills of Law, Baxter and Johnstone but he was the vital player that performed for the team.

Calmac is like that. Perhaps his real value will only be seen when he is gone. Perhaps Turnbull and/or Henderson will replace him. I do not know Turnbull well enough to judge him.

Didn’t watch sevco yesterday but really surprised that no one from hibs or Celtic have asked the sfa questions about brother john beatons appointment to ref the match. Now I don’t know if the red was merited or not but this is a guy who shouldn’t ve in charge of any game involving them.!!!
Are the clubs of Scotland just going to accept cheating the rest of their days?.

As the smiling sycophantic Four penalty Dallas licks Gerrard’s Arse and the loyalist Beaton drinks with his friends in the union jack pub, the question is, WTF are they going to do about it? What will it take for the SFA do what they are elected to do, govern fairly, honestly and openly. Where is our clubs leaders that stay silent as mice when this blatant show of one sided Hunnery goes on? Are they ever going to speak up and call it out? It does not auger well for this season, them knowing what’s going on and doing nothing about it.

Is this the season when we are destined not to recruit or invest enough in the team so that the gap will close to make the league more competitive, to give them more of a chance, is that the reason Club Skinto feel empowered enough to make these boastful claims? if it is and they do not invest more in the team, then watch as the stands empty and they are left whistling Dixie…

Rebus, I wish you and your wife all the best. A friend of ours recently had both chemo and radiation for breast cancer. After a year, she is fine, all clear. It is tough but you can do it. I’m not religious so I can only express my hopes for you. Makes football what it is, just a game.
Warm wishes from wet Scotland.
Jimmybee, thanks for the reminder about John White. Charlie Saiz, keep up the stats (Lenny’s goals) and insights on the “Regista” Did you pick that term out of a Panini sticker book? LOL
John Beaton???!!! Lenny, call them out on that. That man should be sacked let alone handing out red cards to Newco’s rivals. That altered the whole game as red cards usually do. Hibees played half the game a man short. I need to remind our league officials that it is illegal to trade whilst insolvent. If our 9 in a row is to be stopped, it should only be stopped legally by a team playing legally.

Sorry CS but I didn’t get to the end of that ‘fascinating’ insight….. but I just hope you gave the Monti your thanks for his (early) input and any royalties due to him, tho’ I think he’d tell you where to stick the aforesaid royalties due to the name and possible connotations thereof. 🙂
Fuck me, I must’ve too much time on my hands.
On another note I feel for Mike and the anguish inflicted on him and all of us by the lying, cheating scum and their acolytes in the SMSM. I too despair, and am almost sickened daily by our spineless, colluding Board. Maybe, just maybe, the next AGM will bear positive fruit. I truly hope so.
