Celtic Diary Friday June 28: Incoming !

Defender Christophe Julien is in town, ready to sign a four year deal.

At around £6-7m he’s quite an investment for Celtic, and one hopes that it is an indication that the board is serious about strengthening the team and backing the manager.

One thing that you won’t see in the Scottish press is that he has just a year left on his contract, and is clearly worth a lot more than we are paying for him.

More interestingly, as we have been aware that Julien was on the radar pre Neil Lennon, and given that Lee Congerton never found anyone of note, one wonders who actually found the player, and why he hasn’t been promoted.

Thats if he doesn’t turn out to be a dud, that is, and to be honest, he does look the part.

From what I can gather, his strong points are strength, anticipation, jumping and aggression.

He does pick up the occasional yellow card, but thats irrelevant as in Scotland that will be something he’ll get used to anyway.

All that remains today, apparently, is for him to sort out personal terms..

David Turnbull, who hasn’t had much luck lately, will now be staying at Motherwell , due to a potential problem that requires corrective surgery.

Celtic did offer to borrow the player and attend to the problem, and then pay for him, but Motherwell presumably want to fix it themselves as they know better.

Meanwhile, the player is left in limbo. Not limbo dancing, of course. That would be silly with a dodgy leg.

It’s hard not to feel for the player.

Not only was his agent taking the piss, but now his club are at it.

Get your leg fixed, run down your contract and we’ll see you soon.

Celtic also seem to be getting caught up in a bidding war for left back Romain Perraud, the Nice left back. Well, I think it’s up to you to judge whether he’s nice or not, although I personally prefer a defender to have a touch of the doo lallys about him and be more nasty than nice.

It’s between Celtic and Brest-you can do that joke- for the services of the player, at least according to French paper L’Equipe, which , translated, means The Equipe.

Perraud told the paper;

Because of a painful history, I had really hammered my wish to leave and at the end of May, I repeated the same thing. I have nothing against the current leaders but Nice missed the train with me. I want a new challenge.”

Anyone else ?

Oh, there’s dozens. Including Paddy McNair of Middlesborough,

Image result for paddy mcnair middlesbrough

who it seems may struggle to win fans over at Celtic.

Still, if he did join that would be one more of us, and one less of them.

Every little helps.

It’s not all good news..

Kalas heading to Bristol City

Bristol City are set to complete the permanent signing of Tomas Kalas from Chelsea despite interest from Celtic and Rangers.

Leigh Griffiths has spoken of his personal battles, and how he now feels they are behind him and he’s ready to roll again.

“It was major depression,”

“People might say, ‘what’s he got to be depressed about?’, but there are stressful times and it wasn’t the best of times for me. Other people are going through it as well and it’s the same for anybody, if you are going through depression then you need to open up and speak to people. There are people who can help.

“I did try to battle though it. I had to. It’s my job. I can’t just phone up one day and say I’m not training.

“But that’s why I was grateful to the manager (Rodgers ). He saw it and he gave me the time off I needed. I’m looking forward now.

“I never asked for time off. It was Brendan Rodgers who said I needed to get my mind right. So, I have to thank him for that because if I had kept playing I would have done myself serious harm.

“My mental health wasn’t right. A lot of things were playing on my mind. So, I just had to step away from football at that time.

“It hasn’t been there for most of my life. It had been there for maybe a year, a year and a half. It started off slow but then it started to snowball towards the end.

“Brendan saw it in training and he knew I wasn’t right. So, I have taken time off. It has been longer than I expected. But I am just glad to be back pulling the shirt back on again. Physically and mentally, it hasn’t been a cake-walk.

“But it is not just my football life. I’ll have a long life after football. I’ve got kids to look after and family to look after. It is a long life after football and I had to make sure I was right.”

If it was previous manager Rodgers who helped start Griffiths’ recovery, it has also helped him to now have Neil Lennon to lean on for advice, who himself has had mental health issues in the past.

Which leads me to this weeks

I didn’t think Griffiths would play for Celtic again, let alone score a goal.

But, I’m happy to be proved wrong, as the man himself said..

Im here until 2022. That’s not changing

Over on the dark side of town, there was hope..oh hang on, there was perhaps the strangest and most desperate tweet to try to make “rangers ” look like a big club..

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk at the Rangers training base in Portugal this morning.

Could Gerrards connections be about to pay off ?

Er, no.

Perhaps this has a serious undertone, despite the general sense of hilarity.

Jack is paid to write about “rangers “, and fair enough may have to swallow some er, incredulous stories to help pay for the roof over his head.

Has he now reached such a level of indoctrination that he can find his own tales to tell ?

Meanwhile, the Ibrox side are “confident ” of signing Martyn Skrtel , who has been released by Fenerbahce.

It’ll be company for Defoe and Davis while all the youngsters run around playing football and smashing windows.

Or even listening to that music that sounds a bit like roadworks.

Rapper SnoopDogg has upset a few friends of alcoholic wife beater Paul Gascoigne with a tweet..

Rap is the music genre where they all talk in rhyme

I’m told it doesn’t work most of the time.

Yesterday, we had this..

“Le’ Equipe” translated means The Equipe! Who gives you this shit? please don’t stop. HAHA.

Despite a failed medical and if the reported spend is accurate, then Celtic were willing to spend over £10.00 mill. on TWO players. Despite all the gloom about “no spend” we are still far from done spending. Big Pete must be having a nervous breakdown, the transfer window is open till midnight on Monday September the 2nd. So still time to bring in new players, the fly on the ointment is of course the C.L. Qualifiers and how much it means financially to the club, prestigious must also be added into the mix and how players value playing in it. £7.00 mill. for a central defender WOW, stick Benko where the sun doesn’t shine, is that a two fingered salute to Brendan? £3.25 Mill. on a young inexperienced Scottish player, no other team in Scotland combined could get there, so a good chance for him to join us later, being that he said so and that means a lot. Paddy McNair GTF..

Ralph’s certainly equipped for the job.

Although £6m for Julien, on top of £9m for Eddy, is good, don’t forget we’ve taken in about £40m and together with record profits, there’s ßtill of spend available before a certain heated drive is in danger of freezing over.

Mike

I remember seeing a picture of him (Lawwell not Ralphy) speaking to a young supporter, the bairn talked to him about transfers and he said something like “wait till summer”. That means SFA in the scheme of things, but we are apparently looking at lots of players, so we will see. The Turkish Twitterata according to CQN was saying that Provo Romain Perraud was on, but I think what that meant was if K.T. was leaving then perhaps he was lined up as his replacement.
Looking at the squad players, the cull might not be over, there’s still plenty of meat left on the bone… sell a few, buy a couple of better quality.

RALPH

I remember an old NOT THE VIEW where they proved that playing for the huns drives you bald, ugly and insane.

They showed a young photogenic Ray Wilkins posing for an early shoot in his Chelsea days. Beside the hun version which was frankly scary!

Re Gascoigne, the people who have taken advantage of him and used him for their own ends need a circle of hell all to themselves. They’ll be good company for each other. He needed proper support and advice from his early days, not encouraged and led on.

He hasn’t helped himself of course, but few people can in that situation. I know I’m in a small minority but I really genuinely feel sorry for him,and have done for years. Hopefully what Brendan Rodgers did for Leigh will prevent a similar outcome.

The Cha

I get worried when I hear him talk of his problems being in the past, as although no expert, most successful people talk of keeping their problems at bay but recognise they’re always there.

Agreed about Rodgers and, if you look at how he dealt with Commons, Allan etc, he never hung anyone out to dry, irrespective of whether they were in his plans or not.

It must’ve been torture typing that but what could you do, other than call out Grif for his appreciation of everything Rodgers did for him!

He wasn’t demoted to 3rd choice striker, Dembele and Eddy were promoted on the strength of their performances and, if he can’t handle that, then sadly it needs to be the parting of the ways.

Celtic need to play the best available players, no matter whose nose gets put out of joint.

“Rodgers treated Commons like shite”, really? this the player who through a tantrum at the currant Celtic manager. Far from “treating him like shite” (nice way to talk about another Celtic manager btw.) You and Commons have that in Common. I thought that Rodgers did him okay, like the walk on bye Mulgrew, why? because he had dignity, did Rodgers. Not something you would know about is it? No, I see you as being a mouthpiece, busy typing away on your P.C. posting derogatory remarks about Celtic players and ex managers in your usual style like ignorance. “Supercillious Prick” well that’s rich coming from a fud like you. You can get hemorrhoid cream for your arse you know, I can feel you straining into your nappy, might be good to apply some now, prevention is better than cure… H.H.

@Mike Commons himself said how well he’d been treated by Rodgers, as did Allan etc. Its something he excels at.

Similarly with Griffiths, he could’ve thrown a strop and said its not my problem but went out of his way to help, as the man himself gratefully acknowledges, despite any fantasist comment to the contrary.

PS Is this Buzzbomb under a different guise? He certainly seems like it and perhaps we shouldn’t mention the missing Brewster Millions just in case.

Ralph good diary at last a replacement for our best central defender over the last few years,Boyata. He blotted his copy book but I hope this guy “gets” Celtic, he sounds the real deal. If we are pursuing the left back it might mean we are losing KT, might not. Interesting Kouassi is back in the frame, it is essential we manage Scott Brown carefully, just playing him every week doesn’t make sense, his leadership on and off the Park is essential. Fair dos to Griff I thought he would be back, totally honest lad who brings so much to the squad, Eddy, Bayo, Griff lots of variations in there. Quality right back please.

Steve, from day 1 it was beyond any coherent understanding (not that I can claim that) IMHO why we went for JH. His age didn’t fit the supposed template (he was 29 then) and, great wee trier that he is, he was not Celtic class, pity, but true. I thought PL was ‘preparing the ground’ as it were by paying around £1.2 mill to the Dons’ housebuilder with a view to his next palatial home. Who knows?
But, if only you could transplant Jonny’s heart into Ntcham, Rogic and others we’d have some world-beaters.

I recently commented about a beautiful ballad, variously known as The Green Fields of France, Willie McBride and more.
Anyway, I came across this, and I post it with a tear in my eye for all of those young “Willie McBrides” (from BOTH sides) whom were slaughtered for nothing more than Capitalism’s insatiable, disgusting greed. I hope this will be a route to hear this exceptional version of the lovely ballad, but as I avoid the major Capitalist sites it may not work. If so I’ll try again some time.

To have three centre backs is brill, sure play Ajer forward if he can but to me he is developing as a really good centre back who has feel for Celtic, his attitude to team mates is excellent and he never hides. Up front, wide, midfield lots of choices if we keep JT and sign a decent right back we will be stronger than last season and we will have to be. Our rivals have strengthened and getting closer to 10 will have an impact whether we like it or not on our ability to get over the line.

I just watched an interview with the new lad on Celtic TV. He reminded me of a wee boy whose dad was re-building a bike for him. He must’ve said 5 times I just can’t wait to start (“when will it be ready da’?”). This guy might not be around forever, but he’s probably here for 10 and he’s raring to go. Morelos, The Hun Hoor his arse has been wiggled up and down every newspaper column in Scotland. He started of at £20.00 mill. but like ever decreasing circles his value has dropped down to £20.00 pound a go., with limited talent, a dreadful card count and a pus like his, its no wonder. They tried there hardest to punt him and Tavnier (penalty) but no fish were biting. Time yet for anyone daft enough, though there’s always some desperate clubs looking for a saviour. Same with Gerrard, linked with every managerial vacancy in Britain, even though he hasn’t passed his coaching badges. Trying hard to make themselves relevant, playing catch-up, trying to pull at the coat-tails of the Champions. Remember when they were crowing, week after week of headlines, telling us how great they were and how shite we were and then, the truth burst out in torrents like the river Forth bursting its banks, they had been found guilty of cheating, the money was stolen from the taxpayer. How we laughed. Never forget Res.12. tell your bairns..
