Celtic Diary Tuesday June 18: Lawwell Guilty of Neglect ?

It appears that David Turnbull and/or his agent don;t fancy playing in yorkshire, or any other shire, after all.

In a spectacular backflip it now appears that Turnbull does want to play for Celtic after all, and is expected to sign later this week.

After all, it’s in the Sun..

PERFECT FIT

David Turnbull to join Celtic from Well today as transfer deadlock finally broken.

Apparently the player wanted guarantees over first team football, which Celtic have given him, as long as he’s fit, turns up on time and is better than anyone else in the squad.

Well done that agent for securing that….

Scott Brown, the last player Celtic spent significant money on from another Scottish club, went public to assure his future team mate that life at Celtic ain’t so bad..

It would be a great place for him to come, learn, play in front of 60,000 fans, win trophies and play in the Champions League.

I think David would be fantastic and it would be the right club to come to given how we develop players.

“Look at myself, James Forrest, Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney all coming through. We are all Scottish lads.

“We have had fantastic coaches all the way through, learned under great managers and we have now got a great manager [in Lennon].

“I had options to go down to England, and to sign for Rangers. I picked Celtic over them all. They filled me with confidence that they wanted to build a team around me.

“I wanted to win trophies and play in the Champions League. That’s why I’ve stayed and I’ve enjoyed every single moment of it.

“David has got that winning mentality. He has been fantastic in some of the games I have seen him play. He got Motherwell Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and was their top goalscorer.

“He won everything at Motherwell. You name it he won it. He doesn’t get that from having three or four good games, he gets that from having 30 consistent games.

I was at that stage myself even though it was a different time and a different situation. But the same club was interested in me. I don’t think there is a better option than to come to Celtic.”

Will this do, boss ?

Okay, I added the last line.

But Brown is right. And he must be applauded for offering support to his new team mate.

After all, Brown has been there, done that and has emerged on the other side as the closest thing Celtic have to a 21st century legend.

He also appealed to the fans not to pre judge the lad.. amidst rumours that he has already blotted his copybook. there will be talk in the media that the supporters won’t support him..as there is always the need for a whipping boy…

“I think they would take to anyone who does really well at the club, with the jersey on.

“Maybe anyone who comes their head is buzzing but you have to remember he’s still only 19 years old, his head and his emotions will be all over the place.

“You have to give him that bit of lee-way. There is still time for him to come here and everyone in that changing room would welcome him to come here because we have a great bunch of lads and I’m sure he’d be a great addition as well.

“I think it is great for Scotland that we have got young players like that coming through. I think the future of the game in this country is looking good for Celtic and Scotland as well. We want everyone to flourish.”

Can I go now, boss ?

You can probably tell which bit I added.

Thing is, if the lad is as good as the management think, then we should do what we have to do to bring him in.

Guarantees of first team football are purely down to the player, which suggest that the agent got his arse kicked when Turnbull spoke with him about other options, which included Sheffield Wednesday  and Barnsley on Thursday.

Or Maryhill FC…

Feel the need to clarify something. We have been asked repeatedly if David Turnbull has snubbed Celtic for Maryhill. Yes & no. We are currently in talks with Turnbull, but not the same one. Our DT is a goalie, 42 yrs old, 18 & a half stone and loves rolls n chips & cans of Vimto!

Can we stop the panic over a lack of signings ?

In the real world players will not see Celtic as the place to be.

The money is crap, the weather is awful and the goldfish bowl existence doesn’t suit everyone.

We may have to wait awhile for any “marquee ” signings as , whether we like it or not, we will not be their first choice, and all we can hope is that we will be the one they pick when no one else wants them.

Thats the reality, and thats why it will be easier to entice Scottish players to move, and why we will struggle to get anyone of note in.

To outsiders, we are a stepping stone, as Virgil van /dijk will testify to, and that will be our main selling point to players of similar potential.

Yeah, it hurts that others don;t see us as we see ourselves, and it should not be used as an excuse by the board for at least not trying for quality and proven players.

Speaking of the board..

Did i miss the bit when Peter Lawwell had a go at the SFA for promoting Stephen Brown to the Grade 1 referee list ?

Scottish referee Stephen Brown steps down after sectarian, discriminatory and homophobic social media posts including abuse aimed at Neil Lennon emerge

  • Stephen Brown has stepped down after offensive social media posts emerge
  • The Scottish referee has expressed deep regret over the 2010 Facebook posts
  • Messages seen by Sportsmail were concerning Celtic manager Neil Lennon

Stepped down ?

He’s only just been promoted .

Given that it was common knowledge-okay, I knew-that this man was still involved in refereeing after his social media antics, why did we have to wait until now before he was exposed ?

And it begs the question, how many more bigots are working in those circles ?

John Fleming should be called to account.

As indeed , should Rod Petrie..

Petrie was involved in the five way agreement, we are told, and as such is a party to the shennanigans surrounding the miraculous rebirth of Rangers, and the granting of a European licence to them back in the days when they needed the money..okay, the last time they needed the money.

With Mike Ashley about to ask them to transfer a substantial amount into his account, one wonders what help they will get this time.

Why isn’t Lawwell all over this ?

Is he happy to see the shareholders get fleeced a second time ?

Why is he not looking after our interests, and by association, the interests of the club he holds office in ?

He has had time enough to show who’s side he is on, and so far we can only deduce that it’s not ours.

We could get UEFA to investigate, but they’re busy right now..

Former UEFA President Michel Platini has been arrested in Paris in connection with a corruption probe into the awarding of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. More follows on

Anyway, its the draw for the Champions League qualifiers today, and it doesn;t look easy..

🌍 have today learned their potential opponents for tomorrow’s First Qualifying Round draw:

🇲🇹 Valletta FC

🇧🇦 FK Sarajevo

🇲🇪 FK Sutjeska

🇦🇱 FK Partizani

🇬🇪 FC Saburtalo

Sarajevo…there’s a place I’ve always wanted to go to.

Of all the cities in europe, this one has the most fascinating history, and arguably is the town that started all the malice.

Thinking back to some of our more recent signings from within Scottish football, the likes of Armstrong GMS and Hayes always performed well against us and everyone else.

I don’t recall Turnbull at all last season, not against anyone. Just saying.

If he signs for us,cool. He’d better realise that he isn’t the big fish at Motherwell, and he’d better realise he needs a new agent. That eejit has been difficult for a lot of clubs, even at a far lower level, and has probably cost a few fledgling players their career.

I know he nearly went too far at a SPL club and a youngster, for example. Little first team experience but maybe 30 caps at his age level, and nearly wrecked the whole thing by his demands.

Celtic should stop dealing with him. If you fancy a move to Celtic, get a new agent.

Sorry but that’s nonsense which gives us a free pass to not spend money and to limit our horizons.

We will of course be a stepping stone, in the same way that Porto, Shaktar, Ajax and, frankly, most teams in the world are stepping stones.

We recently appeared in a prestigious report with the other top 31 teams in Europe (by value of the club), we have a turnover of £100m which puts us in the top 30-50 clubs in Europe and have competed in post-Christmas European football in the last two years. Oh, and we have £50m in the bank.

Despite all this, we have to set our standards on Scottish talent only? It’s expectation management. Our biggest signing in the last window was PL’s bonus.

I know what you’re saying but doubt if Ralph really believes that.

Players these days play all over Europe and the World and will play where’s best for them and yes money plays a part in this but so does exposure for them to display their talents.

As a gateway drug to the fabled EPL to overcome visa etc issues then we’re in a better position than most and that will only improve, which should please all Brexit Bhoys. 😉

If (its still not a done deal) Turnbull signs then we’ll have paid our 2nd largest fee for a Scottish player and the wages are likely to be similarly large.

There’s also talk of the French defender for £8-10m, which is probably the going rate that we need to spend to improve on what we’ve got.

We’ve got big issues at Right, Left & Centre Back and a main striker to partner/take the load of Eddy.

The players that we sign to take us to the next level should be valued £5-10m but obviously with good scouting and contract options we can get some of these a lot cheaper.

1 or 2 long term project development players are fine but not to plug immediate holes in the team/squad.

Bit of a saga this Turnbull situation. Actually don’t care if he signs or not. If he does I hope he does the business for us. Anyone given that jersey and gives 100% is all I expect given the wages professional players are on these days.Kissing the badge doesn’t do it for me, just give your all cos you’re on fekin good money. So we see where it goes is my attitude to any signings we make.Agree with your view regarding how others may see us and attracting so called marquee signings. One thing this Turnbull situation showed me is how easy it is for average clubs in England to entice potential signings away from us. Don’t know the answer but it is quite worrying to realise the diminishing market we seem to be in. Next few signings will be crucial for the club going into next season coupled with those on the way out. Interesting times ahead HH

The Cha

Reply to  57cupfinal

Not sure our market is shrinking, as the whole world should be opening up to us even if English predators are getting bigger.

I’m hoping that we do get the Turnbull deal done and we’ve got him before he’s priced out of our range.

Money is important but probably always has been and not just for non-Celtic minded players.

Crerand, Macari, Hay, Nicholas, McClair, Collins etc were all supposedly Celtic minded but in the end they all had no qualms about leaving for a few dollars more.

This is the professional way we should approach negotiations and not based on any alleged sentiments.

Mike

The English predators might be getting bigger, but the wages are rising at a huge rate of knots. It seems to me that the players at the very top are spinning around on the carousel of greed. Like Neymar for instance, it sounds as if he has been trying to instigate a move back to Barcelona, but what have PSG won or done to make him want to leave? Players like Pogba, who has done not much at Man. Utd. but is trying to raise his salary to £500.000 P.W. What has he done for them? a six place in the EPL. No, they are trying to facilitate a move, to get another big signing on fee and a payoff from the clubs they are leaving add another tax free increase in salary. Agents bairns need to be fed too. But the carousel also filters down the food chain in a always increasing spirol until BOOM and its BUST.

The Cha

Pogba does seem to get it in the neck but he was immense for Juventus and World Cup winners France.

Manure have been mismanaged since Fergie time and Ole Ola la won’t be fixing it any time soon.

I know £0.5m a week is mind blowing but if that is paid to the fulcrum to achieve their aims eg Top 4, UCL, win EPL or UCL then the returns will be 10 fold.

Mike
Reply to  The Cha

He doesn’t seem able to live up to his reputation though, you have to justify those large wages. To keep at the very top you need to keep on proving it, he has it all in his armoury but he doesn’t show it enough for me.

Stephen Brown, His posts were made on F.B. in 2010 of an unsavoury, sectarian, discriminatory and homophobic nature, remember Hugh Dallas was still in situ. so he was probably trying to gain favour with his boss’s. The John Fleming, Hugh Dallas, Stewart Regan, Putrid Petrie school of refereeing. It was reported that it took until 2014 for it to be removed from I-cloud and his (cough) indiscretions was reported to the SFA and brought forward to its Judicial Panel. (Auldheids friends) who gave him a slap on the wrist and told him to continue in the same vein. It was only when he reached the giddy heights of Cat. one refs, when he failed the litmus test of the SFA’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion panel, what they have another panel and Maxwell booted him out. It only took Nine years, OMG. Euston, we have a problem.

Agree with D’fhinnein mick Turnbull didn’t make an impression on me but I rarely retain a sense of opposing players. If our scouting system has done their homework he will be welcome as a young Scottish player at Celtic. I still feel we did badly by Scott Allan, there was no plan, these guys get, what, 15 years in their career and although he had a good season or so at Hibs you just wondered whose Celtic plans he fitted into. In midfield there is Brown, Rogic,Sinclair, Forrest, McGregor, N’tcham ( if he stays), plus two maybe three young players who need game time coming through, a tad crowded and like McGinn he can’t be guaranteed a place.

Hopefully he does knuckle down and put in the hard graft that he hasn’t done in the past 3 years when he’s been a disgraceful professional and thoroughly disruptive presence.

Imagine if we signed Griffiths, Tierney, Rogic, Christie this Summer, maybe Bayo and N’tcham, as new players. It would look like a very strong bit of transfer business but in effect that’s what is happening. Rogic did come back but was pretty poor , we know he can be devastating when fit, I hope Tierney and Christie aren’t as slow in rediscovering their form and we all
want to see Leigh competing as he did before. Not all doom and gloom but please a quality right back

Turnbull is probably on a grand a week I would say Celtic would have offered 12 maybe with add ons.Im sure his agent would have wanted more and been.looking at 20k I don’t think he is worth that tbh. Henderson with more game time will do the job.

This happens, as Christmas does, every fucking year; are we to forgive everyone who’s drawing a salary from Celtic for being directly involved in the failure of transfers in?
Do they not see this annual event coming?
FFS! As soon as it is open to start dealing, we should have around 5 options per position in mind. Go quietly, with ‘silence’ clauses in dealings and offer what we think is realistic.
Of course, some ‘bargaining’ may ensue, but ONLY under ‘wraps’. Once we’ve reached our ceiling make a ‘final’ bid, open for 5 working days and then withdrawn; take it or leave it.
Someone else made a point I totally agree with; if/when an ‘agent’ fucks up, ban him from Paradise and NEVER deal with the cunt again. Not EVER.

According to reports m8 it was once again down to no guarantees over first team selection. Sane scenario as McGinn. World War 1
So, just who was the ‘young Willie McBride’?
Graham Clifford visits the final resting place in France of the famed soldier from County Armagh

Graham Clifford
11 May 2014 2:30 AM

2
Scottish singer Eric Bogle wrote the song.
In a quaint French country graveyard in the village of Authuille (5km north of Albert and close to the battlefields of the Somme) a wreath, with its leaves now withered, rests against a white headstone.

On its inner rim green, white and orange ribbons and a circle of synthetic poppies still stand out against the brown earth below.

This is the last resting place of Private William McBride who served with the Inniskilling Fusiliers and lost his life on April 22, 1916.

He was just 21 when he was killed – one of so many Irish men to have lost their lives in the Great War – but in song his memory is preserved.

Though there were eight soldiers named ‘William McBride’ listed with the British forces, and a further six registered as ‘W McBride’ who died in France and Belgium during World War I, it’s believed the William McBride buried in Authuille is the one on whom the song ‘The Green Fields of France’ is based.

The song’s Scottish composer, Eric Bogle, recently confirmed that this was one of the graves he sat by before writing the emotive song words – though Private McBride was 21 when he perished – and not 19 as the lyrics state.

Bogle allegedly told a local historian that the grave (of ‘his Willie McBride’) belonged to a soldier who was with this battalion – without being specific about the location of the grave.

In the same cemetery I find the headstone of a Private W McBride who died in February 1916 but records fail to confirm his age (most believe he was 19).

Some are convinced that, in fact, this is the ‘Willie McBride’ in question but Bogle’s testimony seems to contradict this.

The composer has been reluctant to clearly pinpoint the source of his inspiration beyond all reasonable doubt – perhaps all of those fallen acted as inspiration en masse.

In the song, made famous by the Fureys and Davey Arthur, the singer asks ‘Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the pipes lowly? Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? Did the band sound the Last Post in chorus? Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?’

On the day I visit the only sound is that of the gentle breeze blowing through the manicured trees which shelter the cemetery on each side.

Private William McBride may have been buried with military honours (though it’s more likely during the intensity of war his body was interned quickly without such a ceremony) but for most of the last century his grave site has been peaceful – so at odds with the conflict that ended his young life.

But who exactly was the Willie McBride we now sing of – the fallen soldier and mother’s son the song’s composer says he prayed over?

One of four children, born to Joseph and Lena McBride in the small Armagh village and townland of Lislea in 1897, a young William attended the Crosskeys National School.

From a Presbyterian family he would have been a regular mass-goer at the local Temple Presbyterian Church.

Interested in becoming a cobbler before war broke out, a teenage Willie would serve his time in the ‘shoe trade’. Initially he worked as an apprentice in Aitkens, Cootehill. He then went to Irvinestown for a short time before moving to work in Belfast.

Eager to do his bit for the war effort, Willie enlisted in the army in Belfast just nine months before his death. He would serve with the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers which was formed in Omagh in September 1914 and was known as ‘the Tyrones’.

Interestingly, the 12th battalion of the Inniskilling Fusiliers fought against the Irish rebels on Easter week in 1916 in Dublin with two of its soldiers dying and seven being wounded.

On the day Willie McBride was killed fighting conditions in the trenches were even more devastating and bleak than usual.

The rain poured in, men stood in water up to their waist – many half-waiting for death. Furious German shelling came on a continuous basis and sick men tried to hold onto their positions.

It simply was hell on earth. The end was inevitable for most, including Willie McBride.

Looking out over the beautiful flatlands near Authuille today it’s hard to imagine that these green expanses were turned into such bloody killing fields for the likes of the youngster from Armagh.

The irony is that these ‘Green Fields’ once ran red with blood.

An entry in the cemetery log by a ‘James Crowley from Cork, Ireland’ reads ‘Willie McBride – you gave your young life for the cause of freedom – every time we sing your name we’ll remember your sacrifice and that of so many brave Irishmen who fought this most brutal of wars so far from your native homeland. May you have found rest ‘where the red poppies dance.’

The Green Fields of France
The story of 19-year-old Private Willie McBride who died in 1916 recently inspired four young Dublin schoolboys to delve into the history of World War I.

The result is a book exploring the futility of war, which has been published by the Glasnevin Trust and is for sale in the museum gift shop in Glasnevin.

Inspired by the Eric Bogle ballad, ‘The Green Fields of France’ the boys from St Paul’s in Finglas, Michael McDonagh (15), Ciaran O’Connor (14), Aaron Boylan (14) and Jamie Broughan (14), used the internet and the commonwealth war graves database to attempt to find the ‘real’ Willie McBride behind the classic song.

During their research they discovered that 19 Willie McBrides were killed in World War I, all of Irish descent. Two died in 1916.

They concluded that the most likely subject of the song died on February 10 and is buried in a French cemetery near the town of Albert.

Their book is a tribute to all Irishmen and Willie McBrides who perished in the Great war.

Tic toc there wa 19 soldiers named Willie McBride killed in action m8 in the great war.
The Scots writer Eric Bogle wrote the song on a trip to the killing fields. An irish historian thinks it relates to a young Presbyterian lad from Armagh who was 21 and not 19 but this didnt go with the lyrics. He fought with the inniskillen battalion the same battalion that fought against Connolly and our heroes of 16.Was he an orangeman I don’t know m8 but it’s such a beautiful ballad and deserves to be sung by both orange and green.
Give it laldy m8.

Boggle also made the case for the song after the bombings in Birmingham and London by the IRA he said there was too much anti Irish going on in Britain and they had forgotten how many brave Irish men had given their lifes to preserve their empire. It his is why he wrote and released the song. I think the Clancy brothers with Tommy Makem had 28 weeks in the Irish charts with it.
dont think Bogle was happy with the way the song was used for the poppy day a couple of years ago as they missed out some lyrics and verses.

Aye Jimmybee, a hundred thousand thank-yous (the ONLY time “yous” is appropriate?) who knows and who gives a fuck.
Thanks, Pal for that, now cherished, information as it comes from a mhan whom I could not respect more. Fuck me, it’s almost love 🙂
Anyway, Jimmy, as it’s symbolic of the “Great War” and the ‘end of all war’, it, as a ballad, can cross all and any divide and be sung purely on its merit of being a lovely song and a protest against all war.
Cheers Jimmy Pal, Tims don’t come better than your good self.
All the Very Best to you, your children and your children’s children. (Ah hope your grandweans keep you up to date with Scottish Cup matters 🙂 IMHO, the SFA and their fuckin’ cup can all go slowly to hell in a wheel-barrow)

Ahm offtae kip, busy day ra morra.
Ah’ll leave you with this, one of my all-time favourite Rhebel songs and with essential female passion, spirit and graphics too.
HAIL! HAIL! and RIP ALL those brave Volunteers (not conscripts) who fought for “Dear Old Ireland” and, disgustingly it was in vain. The ‘Cause’ wasn’t everyones cause…….I’ll leave it here as I don’t want to hurt fellow Tims whose belief is not in parallel with mine. There’s no way of proving one from other, so hopefully we see sense, and leave things open to discussion.

Mods, please FFS.
Comments arriving late lose ALL the point of blogging, the on-line, ON TIME discussion.
Of course, do your best, do your worst, it’s your FN site but, without some consistency, this best of all Tim site will erode and crumble. DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN.
Offer explicit parameters and advise that posts OUTSIDE of the parameters will be binned, permanently, as will the poster.
I’ve been fucking awful on here at times and I would actually be helped by said parameters.
YOUR CALL, of course.
Love and kisses, TicToc. xxx
