Celtic Diary Wednesday May 15: In The News Tonight

Apologies again for the irregularity of the Diary, as due to work commitments and the twenty four hour bar in the hotel, it’s been difficult to find the time to throw together something that is both  literate and entertaining.

However, there are some things that need to be approached , and so therefore the beer can wait.

The hunt for a new manager has successfully deflected the papers away from the relatively piss poor performance against “rangers ” this weekend.

It has allowed the manager to prepare for what is increasingly looking like his swansong at Hampden on May 25th.

Or will it be his swansong.

We are aware that terms and conditions of a new contract have been discussed, and a sort of “subject to no one else wanting it ” arrangement in place for Lennon to finish the ten in a row charge that he started.

After coming in to steady the ship when the last manager headed south for warmer climes and bigger cheques, Lennon should, and probably will, be offered some sort of role at the club.

However, there are several names in the frame even at this stage, as you’ll notice no one has actually said they aren;t interested yet.

Perhaps the job does still have some attraction, maybe a sort of best of the rest appeal for the better managers who aren’t quite yet ready for obscurity.

So, lets have a look at the runners and riders as they stand,  a sentence that will make pedants everywhere reach for their keyboards..

Rafael Benitez.

First mentioned on here back in March, and now back in pole position with the bookies. A drunk fellow told us that he, too, reached agreement on terms and conditions to take the job, but is holding off a decision until he considers all his options, and he does have a few.

Jose Mourinho.

A name still being bandied about, but its unlikely he could stand me shouting “fuck off ” at him for an hour and a half every week ?

David Moyes.

Another name still being bandied about, but would he be able to handle everyone in the stands shouting “fuck off 2 at him for an hour and a half every week ?

Andre Villas Boes. (is that his name ? )

A possibility, according to at least one drunk we listen to on a regular basis. Might well be some mileage in this.

Marcelo Thingy From Leeds

there’s a very convincing case for this guy, but whether or not he’s fed up of the charming Victorian architecture of Leeds and ready to swap it for the eerily similar Victorian architecture of Glasgow is another question. and one he probably wouldn;t understand as his English apparently isn;t great, and according to one fellow I spoke to last week, ( and he would know ) there is an awful lot of media work that comes with the Celtic job, and the Argentinian fruitbat might well be fun, n=but being able to handle the press next year might to too much for him.

Anyone else ?

Steve Clarke hasn’t ruled himself out yet, ut he certainly hasn’t ruled himself in.

Eddie Howe is another name recently mentioned, and from a source not quite as drunk as the others. It’s claimed the Bournemout manager has been interviewed, in London, and has expressed an interest in the job.

So much so, on fact, that our man reckons he’s the real choice and all the others are a mere deflection.

By the way, last tim ei spoke to him, he was telling me that Rogers was going to Leicester, and this was before the ink was dry on Oddsone Edoaurds deal.

Which probably does explain why Moussa Dembele hit the highway the way he did.

So, who is it to be ?

I don’t really care any more.

You know why ?

Because  whoever it is, he won’t be as good as Steven Gerrard, who by then would have seen two Celtic managers off during is reign, and thats before he’s even won anything.

Well, that will be the narrative from our more imaginative reporters up there.

Speaking of which..remember this guy ?

Andy Newport Retweeted Andy Newport

Press Association Sport understands Jozo Simunovic was also referred to the same SFA three-man panel of ex-referees following the off-the-ball incident with Jermain Defoe but there was not unanimous agreement that it constituted a red card offence

He’s the guy who broke the Beaton death threats story, which conveniently covered up a massive error of judgement from the referee when he popped into a loyal bar after helpng his heroes win last time out at Ibrox.

Note again the term “understands “, which means there aren;t any actual facts to back up his claim.

What it does though, is encourage the rage amongst those who might otherwise wake up and realise they’ve won nothing again and are about to be fleeced for the new season books, strips, sashes and special self playing flutes that will hit the shops this summer.

incidentally, I got stuck behind an orange walk in motherwell last Saturday, at least thats what my pal told me it was.

I thought they were filming an episode of the Walking Dead.

Predictably, Neports press release prompted a statement.

And I have to say its one of their funniest ones..

Whoever wrote that perhaps needs to understand what even handedly means.

Then there is always the default position to get the bears onside..

Clearly he’s not the guy to proof read “there ” letter..

Most of his audience would have stopped reading at “in mass ” . They only march past chapels, they won’t go into them.

They really are in pain.

If it was an animal you’d have it put to sleep to save them any more suffering.

But then again, we’d have little left to laugh at.

Anyway, they are looking forward already to next season, whilst the SFA work out how to include the two wins over Celtic in next years points tally….

He might be right one year.

One other thing…

They really didn’t need the picture. I think we all knew what he would look like..

How about a caption to comment on,? – I hear you ask

Go on then..

We simply have to get the appointment right.
Brendan came in and our faith was restored. We had seen enough from our previous managers my grandson had wanted to chuck it in,the football was dire the stadium empty.
Brendan brought premiership class back to our club.Like Martin he brought us kicking and screaming from our slumber he showed the way.
Now we simply have to replicate that by appointing someone who will galvanise us and lead us to the holy grail of 10 in a row.
Sadly it won’t be Neil Francis Lennon. But thank you Neil for everything you have given to the cause you will always be in our hearts.
We need a power manager who will command respect not only from our own but from everyone in football. This appointment has to be right it has to be about 10 in a row not a steady hand but a driving force.Someone who will lead the way.
It’s over to you Dermot go get him.

Agreed and it can’t be “who’s just been sacked” Hughton, Coleman etc.

We’ve got the money for a serious appointment and should do it irrespective if the best candidate is still in a job and compo needs to be paid.

With regards to the next managerial appointment, i have no faith in this board getting it right, they appointed Brendan Rodgers & didn’t back him in his second season.
It’s not about plucking a figure out the air & saying there’s £30m, it’s about adding quality to key areas when they need strengthening, not bringing in squad players, bring in players who are first team ready & good to go.
We brought Izaguirre back when he was already finished, we have pushed Lustig to breaking point because our scouts can’t find a proper right back.
We have overplayed KT because the only other options were Izaguirre & Hayes, who isn’t a left back. Shocking.
We are going to places like Ipswich youths for Benyu?
Guys like Kouassi who are not going to contribute, yet we can’t get a deal done for John McGinn, a quality player who wanted to come to Celtic?
What is going on?
Lustig & Izaguirre were our first choice full backs in 2012, yet we have started games this season with these two lads, good servants but close to being done.
The Celtic board are getting off lightly again, the failure to secure John McGinn should have been met with outrage, not a shrug of the shoulders.
Brown is another who would have benefited with McGinn around, a natural successor who Broony would have helped settle in, Brown of course is another who has been over played this season.

We have had more bad manager appointments in the last 3 decades than good ones.
Liam Brady/Lou Macari/Joe Venglos/John Barnes/King Kenny/Tony Mowbray etc.
Our two outstanding ones have been Martin O’Neill and Brendan Rodgers. We need another such appointment.

Olivior Ntcham F.F.F. to Porto Oh Yeah and use the money to buy the under 21 F.F.F. Lys Mousset striker would be a great swap. Olivier doesn’t suit our style of Football, ours is a bit too rough and quick for him, I for one would like to see Celtic have Mo Power in midfield. Mousset would be an Asset with ever increasing value. Steve Clark for the Scottish job means two things, a big loss to Kilmarnock (could someone send a sympathy note to the Killie supporter). and a really good Scottish coach, someone with knowledge and respect for how football should be played. Beilsa-Bub to Celtic, oh yeah, he would be a devil of an appointment. Beilsa -Bub is very very frightening to me, to meeee

Good thoughtful post by Monti at 7.32 this morning. I don’t agree with everything he says but I like the attitude higher than the latest failure from somewhere else. As others

Peter Lawwell is more of a Celtic man than Brendan will ever be so in Montis post at 7.32 I agree with most if it but did the board know he couldn’t be trusted anymore after season 1.
What we have to do is make sure someone of that or better standard comes in.
Celtic simply have to get this appointment right.
Lennon isn’t far wrong in what he had to say earlier. I remember only too well the late 70s and 90s but my grandson hasnt seen us lose a league. Hadn’t seen us lose against a Glasgow derby team in blue. How they have enjoyed a wonderful time. Much like my childhood when i thought every season was opened up with the black limo going round the ground and Sir Robert Kelly
Unfurling the flag. It is in hard times you find your true heart. We aren’t anywhere near that but we do need investment proper investment both in the managerial roles and the playing staff.
It is in our own hands failure is not an option.

Conversion is one mans sweet sorrow, the converted being the most enthused. But everyone to there own. Bring out the gimp says the actor in Pulp Fiction, with the pool baw firmly stuck between his geggies. The Celtic board are those who wear the gimp masks, there is absolutely no chance of them spitting out the baw and revealing the dark secrets of Celtic cyberspace. They are more like the “Cosa Nostra” of secrets, Omerta is the rule, you would need the Spanish Inquisition to rack-out the secrets. Boot our players all over the midden, secret, Res.12, secret, new manager, secret. So its the guessing game for the supporters, but its fun guessing and my guess is they are going to twist. Its hard to read guesses from everyone, every supporter has their own opinions, but that is all they are, guesses…

If Neil Lennon gets the job he gets the job and we all have to accept that and support him and the team, so I’m not writing this post as something against him…..I just wanted to write a wee bit about a guy who could be what we need. I live in Chile and in 1998 Scotland and Chile were both in the World Cup. Then we both went downhill. The Chilean FA appointed various managers (Olmos, Garces) and the team got so bad it hurt theyes watching them….and I saw them on TV regularly in World Cup qualifiers and Copa America qualifiers and they were awful on the eyes sometimes…a bit like Scotland under Berti Vogts and Levein. Then Marcelo Bielsa took over…he introduced young players (remember we’re talking young Chilean boys, not foreigners ‘cos this is the national team) Alexi Sanchez, Arturo Vidal, Gary Medel, etc. They qualified for World Cup 2010…they went from pure shite to exceptional. Bielsa had them playing attacking football from the kick off to the final whistle. He’s a very good tactician and is definitely not a “loco” as his nickname suggests. He has experience from managing in Spain and in England with Leeds. When he resigned the next manager (Sampaoli) inherited a ready made team of boys who now had a World Cup under their belt and they qualified WITH EASE for the 2014 World Cup.
Bielsa resigned because Chile’s answer to Dave King, a squinty-eyed dodgy fuckwit called Jadue, was taking over the Chilean FA ‘cos he saw a chance to make money from the team’s success.long story short…Jadue fucked off to the USA and is at this moment an FBI protected witness (he’s grassing to save his ain neck)in a giant fraud/money laundering case.A bag with 50,000 dollars was found in his hotel room. Bielsa sussed him from the off.
So, if he gets the Celtic job, he will pleasantly surprise the fans who might be thinking “Who???”

The obsession with 10 in a row is both a negative & a positive thing, those of us old enough to remember original rangers equalling our 9 in a row, will remember how it felt to stop them doing 10 & preserving our record.
Those years changed me as a Celtic supporter, i think it changed a lot of us, it wasn’t easy to relax or truly enjoy our football.
Look at what else we went through prior to that, the old board had to be removed, the threat of the club going under, the old board talking about moving ground?
A year at Hampden, losing the three amigo’s, watching the huns bring in the likes of Gascoigne & Laudrup.
We had to endure some dark days & some poor excuses for managers & players, yet we stuck together through it all, paid all our creditors & laid the foundations for what we are seeing now, the trophies we see being collected now.

I can’t speak for the youth in our support or criticise them, they haven’t seen the hard times & i’m glad they haven’t, but i and a lot of others did & it has stayed with us.
The positive side to the 10 & the Holy Grail being secured is in seeing the same panic in the huns faces as i felt in the 90’s, it’s their time to stress, their time to panic, it’s enjoyable to watch their pain, long, long may that continue.

Neil was partly right in what he said about the fans unrealistic expectations at times & i agree with him in many regards, but he must factor in the reasons the 10 is so important to us & not just the youth in our support.
The club must deliver 10 in a row & the hun forever silenced in mockery.

God bless the Pope of Rome!

The wheels keep on turning manager or not. I remember Peter Houston who worked for 8 months as a scout under John Park saying something like. Celtic have an unbelievable scouting network, analyst’s send you out to look at individual players, youths and senior, its my job to evaluate their strengths and weakness’s. I learned more in those 8 months than in years at other clubs. John has a great department, very professional, but of course its down to the manager to look at individual players and make his own mind up about whether they will meet what he needs. So manager or not, players are being evaluated. Its all useless of course if they are deemed to be out of our price range or they have a bad reputation outside football. But then again, who evaluates the board, who decides their strengths and weakness’s? If the Celtic money tree is bursting with cash, will they spend it? Share prices demand increase, if it reduces then naebody is happy, turn those frowns upside down Macca Packa..

See one thing i’d like to ask of whatever manager is in place next season?
Would it be possible to have our wide players play on their natural side?
James Forrest wide right, right footed.
Left sided player, left footed.

I want to see our wide players instructed to go past their opponents with real pace & skill.
James does it but the left side needs investment.
Shved is left footed so maybe there’s the answer!

You want that, I want a midfield strong and athletic, the midfield is where the battles are fought and won. Its no use if our midfielders cannot handle the physicality of Scottish football and are too easily brushed of the ball. That is missing in this Celtic team, Bobby Murdoch RIP was the epitome of how a Celtic midfielder should be. Strong in the tackle, with a wide range of accurate passing ability, big Jock said “if he plays Celtic play’s”. I never want to see our players being bullied all over the park, like on Sunday. I’m not convinced about Johnston, he is decent but he needs to bulk up a bit.
Maybe he should stay with me for a week 🙂

Good coaches don’t need to be told what to do,successful teams evolve, get better and improve. The Tory’s sold the best players and replaced with nothing but cheap mince and loans

???? Celtic coach has nothing to do with Nimmo Smith mate. Celtics largest spend is on players and players wages. You can see it in the financials – unless the moneys gone missing ??

Look through any windy, what do you see. Every Celtic blog in Celtic cyberspace singing the same old song, of how the board has got it wrong, wrong, wrong. So it must be true then, no doubt most of it is, but question: How can we not be happy at where we are at: An Invincible season, A double treble, Another league trophy, leading to 8INR and a league cup in the bag, a Scottish cup final coming up in a few days, that might lead to a never before achieved treble, treble. Ten thousand on the waiting list and millions in the bank. If that is not success, then WTF is? What dae yeh want, or what more do you want, or are we just a bunch of greetin faced cretins, not happy at what we have achieved , demanding more, more, more. We can always want more. Those were the days my friend, when failure was a certainty, WTF was that failure worth and how much we yearned for us to be successful, makes yeh think…EH.
