Celtic Diary Sunday March 17: Big Game Today

Well, someones got to try to get the players excited.

The danger is with so many points of a lead with so few games left, the players will settle into cruise control and not play at the tempo with the enthusiasm required to enable confidence ahead of the upcoming semi final with Aberdeen.

Once standards and application drop, its difficult to raise them back up.

Results yesterday meant that Celtic now need to win only six of their remaining nine games at most to secure the honour of being the first Scottish side to attain eight successive titles twice.

And you can’t have ten without eight.

There is also the possibility of an unprecedented third successive treble, which is astonishingly being played down by supporters and media alike, which could also affect the squad.

Make no mistake, no one else wants to see Celtic’s domestic dominance continue, and they will do all they can to stop it.

Thats why a let up in pace and aggression today would be disastrous.

A win puts Celtic ten clear with eight to play, and one can understand why they may feel they’ve reached the crest of the hill and can perhaps rest up a bit.

There was even talk that Lennon would rest a few players and introduce others, such as Scott Allan for the last few games.

Yeah, Scott Allan, who has signed a pre contract with Hibernian.

One can only assume Lennon was, for want of a better phrase, taking the piss.

Today , Sky sports, who are showing the game on various free streaming sites, hint that Phillip Benkovic, Calum MacGregor and even Olivier Ntcham could feature, but again there is a feeling that someone is taking the piss.

Lennon is more likely to go with the players he has used so far until one of them does something stupid.

For MacGregor especially, there is no rush and the manager wants to make sure he’s ready for the post split league and cup games.

Ntcham under Lennon could be interesting, as the manager may well have something he can offer the Frenchman, having played at the top level himself as a central midfielder, and if he can add his own qualities to those of youngster, we may well have something special when Brown finally begins to ease himself out of the picture.

Either that or it’ll be a few quid more in the bank.

Hopefully Oddsone Edoaurd will get a chance to shine from the start today, perhaps alongside Burke, or even Bayo, but its unlikely.

Lennon sems to favour a rotating forward line of three or four , which on paper sounds great, but in reality leads merely to confusion.

It’ll be interesting to see if Scott Sinclair regains his place, having been substituted last week, and if he doesn’t , then I’d be thinking the manager may see him as surplus to requirements.

Leigh Griffiths has been handed a lifeline as well…he might get a chance to re-estblish himself, possibly in a front two… but not quite yet, as Lennon explained..

I met him on Monday,”

“I’m optimistic about seeing him back before the end of the season.

“He looked OK and looked reasonable condition. He’s got a bit of work to do to catch up with the rest. That’s what we’re hoping will happen over the coming weeks.

“I don’t want to talk about private things but he’s obviously itching to get back. It’ll take a bit of time but hopefully we’ll see him before the end of the season. If you can get him fit and firing you’ve got a top-quality centre-forward.

“It’s down to him now. Part of his recovery is that he does it step by step but he’s doing it so hopefully we can get him back doing what he’s good at as quickly as possible.

“You have to look at the human side as well sometimes, they’re not robots. They all have frailties in their own make-ups. I’m looking at the team last weekend and they looked leggy and I understand that.

“There was always going to be a bit of a lull. So hopefully we’re over that and we’ll see the power and the pazazz of Celtic again going forward.

A win today, and that means when the league starts again after the break, “rangers ” will  know defeat at Celtic Park two weeks today will mean they are thirteen behind with six games to go.

Which should make for another one of those beautiful Sundays…

Their side stumbled to a 1-1 draw at home to Kilmarnock yesterday, having been behind to a route one special from the Ayrshire side. An over the top ball landed at the feet of their forward, who sidestepped an onrushing Alan MacGregor to slide the ball home.

MacGregor would have no doubt assaulted the goalscorer, but he must have remembered he’d already been booked, so it was more a sort of half arsed attempt to scare rather than have any real impact on proceedings.

There was a late incident when Conor Goldson hacked down another forward who was heading towards goal, a straight red anywhere else but ibrox, but the brothers in black got together and issued a yellow as per their works directive.

Gerrard, post match, said it was the referees fault as Kilmarnock should have had eight players sent off, and that they had even resorted to time wasting and other forms of cheating, but the reality now is that with their season over, he’s under severe pressure, and the support have had enough.

He has a point about their performances against the better sides..

Gerrard has won 2 games from 14 against Hibs, Killie and Aberdeen 14% win ratio

Overall, his win ratio is worse than any of his predecessors , which is quite an achievement in itself..

It looks like he’s not handling the mockery and abuse that is already coming his way very well at all..

Season ticket renewal time isn’t looking very promising, and that could kill them off.

There are some who still stand staunchly behind their club though…

Just not that many of them..

Amazingly, although this is a protest , no one seems to be protesting, and everyone seems to be looking in a different direction.

Its safe to say the mood has changed.

Every year everything is fine, then someone makes them play other teams and it all falls apart.

And then, yesterday, it got worse.

Much, much worse..

The mystery deepened..

Two suspects have been held overnight…

Elsewhere, and Auldheid has put together a piece which examines the recent scandal concerning Clyde, who were docked points for fielding an player they shouldn’t have.

and wonders why that didnt happen to another club who used it as a sort of tactic to win leagues and cups.

Well worth a read.

Auldheid

Now, something that isn’t worth a read.

Ever.

Ah, football fans are all coked out of their skulls now.

Are there any societal issues that the media will not blame on football ?

We hear that other exclusives are in the pipeline, as its been discovered football grounds are taking up the space where hostels for the homeless could have been built, and one fan even handed an out of date packet of instant mash to a foodbank.

Anyone would think that the police and government have been made to look silly and want their revenge…

We have to go back to Thursday for the last caption competition..

Oh, and good luck to John Beaton today, as he takes his place as fourth official after his horrendous life threatening ordeal by text.

Keep your eyes out for the result of the trial now that someone has been arrested..

As for John, good luck today, and I’m sure you’ll have all the support you need from the man in the middle, bobby Madden.

In fact, perhaps the support should show their support for Beaton, with a round of applause or a wee song.

Hang on, Madden and Beaton ?

Well, that should be a laugh.

Hail Hail Glorious Saint Patricks day to everyone!

The sun shines out of the hearts of the Irish.
How is a best friend like a 4 leaf clover?
Because they are hard to find and lucky to have.

Why don’t you iron the 4 leaf clover on your Celtic top?
Because you don’t want to press your luck.

Well done to the son of Peterborough, we hope you enjoy your new career managing in the 2 sisters chicken factory. Puck!

Persistence beats resistance – no, I’m not talking about Res12 – I see the penny has finally dropped with JW_1872 on Twitter! He appears to have a (somewhat limited) grasp on the concept of death. I think he has now passed the stage of accepting kind condolences for his loss in 2012, and needs to feel the soothing words of Leigh Griffiths ringing in his ears.

YER CLUB’S DEID – BEAT IT!

After yesterday’s snow and the winds over Scotia, finally the weather has cleared and started to warm up.
This is the time of the year when teams are fighting for survival, Jim McIntyre will have the Dee well prepared and ready to dig in, the number 3-9 bus’s will be parked, its up to our creative players to find a solution and over come the bus’s. We all overlook the fact that teams with experience of winning championships and trophies have that winning mentality and find solutions to win games. Other teams no matter how they start a league campaign, the nerves start to affect their performances. Celtic are the champions with that winning mentality, but it is never easy, so a good start and an early goal would be great, then keep up the pressure. Best wishes to the Lions our golden bhoy’s. HAPPY ST.PATRICK’S DAY BHOYS & GHIRLS…..& UNA!

A wee word of caution before the game today tho, Neil must ensure the players are of the right attitude & application today, we are playing a side in deep relegation trouble so they will or should be fighting for their spfl lives.

Let’s be clinical today from the off & get this ten point advantage cemented, with the opportunity to basically win the league against the peepel at the end of the month, that’s all the motivation i’d need!

Good luck today Bhoys!

P.S.
Sincerely hope the Celtic support give Beaton an, erm, warm welcome!

“Rangers” truly are a poison chalice Pedro had the wherewithal to move continent after his tenure . Gerard May rue his decision to take on such a toxic proposition. Warburton will sleaze his way into some lower division outfit and come out quite well always. McInnes and Clarke were too smart and could see how it would unfold.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree.

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there,of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee lined glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
Where I stand on the roadway, or in the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep hearts core.

All have a Happy St Patricks Day.

The papers showing the fisticuffs of Moralos, the scything red card tackle of Goldson, the greeting face of Gerrardino he barefacedly complaining of referee bias. What an absolute roaster he is. The cracks are opening wider and wider. Then we read of players who clearly do not want to play for Mr. EBT, why might that be? its because they have no respect for him and their country. He can play for his club (Fletcher) but is unavailable to play for EBT. Oh, we cannot play on artificial turf (nae wonder) a goalkeeper who waits until the very last minute before retiring from International duty, of course it was nothing petulant like because he was cited by the SFA. Managers without authority are not managers at-all. But still his assistant threatens Celtic players with sanctions if they do not appear for training. The SFA is fucked, it has lost all credibility, the day it sold its soul to preserve and assist the Zombies, is the day that it too died. Long Live The Fight For Truth And Justice!

Mike

A right wing back who has seen more of the ball than any other Celtic player, going backwards rather than forwards, ever decreasing circles, a change of direction is required with a lesson on where the goals are. A good team would be two up on us, as players look to take the easy route. Can we take a corner properly, where is the inventiveness to take a player on…

Well, what can you say after seeing that? The 96th minute goal comes as a huge relief and maybe for once an international break has come at a good time as we don’t want to see ourselves stuck in some kind of rut. The last two performances have been pretty dire so we’ll have to up our game a lot when we come back. Hopefully the rest as well as the return of a couple more players from injury will give the team a bit more zest and cutting edge after the break.

Chronic performance, but happy with the 3pts. Just had to be two of the poorest performers, that combined for the winner!! Playing against a defensively set up team battling relegation was always going to be turgid, but consider a starting 11 without Ralston, Simunovic, Boyata, Benkovic, Christie, Rogic, Bitton, Henderson, N’Tcham, Kouassi, Arzani, Griffiths, Burke, Weah and Bayo, i’d hope to have plenty more options in time for the big one!!

Firstly, Happy St Patrick’s day to the Irish folk on here and to all the haufers.

Another 3 points today against a very resolute Dundee. It’s over and I hope we get the chance to officially clinch it against #letsfail FC at CP.

Too early to say Noel. We’ll have a far clearer idea at the end of the season and we also have to see who else will be in the running. Much as I like Lenny, performances will have to improve a lot between now and then for him to have any chance.

175 over 110 That’s what my B.P. measure is this moment, it was a hell of a lot higher earlier. I knew how the Dee would set up, everybody knew and they did it well, dogged in defence and they were excellent going forward playing short passes through our players, well done them. Celtic on the other hand had no fluidity in the way that they played, many of our players were off the boil. We resorted to high balls into their box, hopeless. We can blame the officials for there minging performance, but we were so conservative in our play it became very predictable. We were looking for someone to grab a hold of the game, take a player on, use our pace and skill, make short passes, play through the Dee, but it only happened once or twice and once we did… Goal, Forrest and Eddy played the way we wanted them to play and saved the day. Pace and power was sat on the bench, eating their oranges. Wrong team, bad performance, hoped for so much better. If we hadn’t got the win, the Huns would very hartned. Fuck the SFA.

You mention one Celtic player who was clueless, that’s out of ten outfield players, yet the player you say is clueless is the player that scored the winning goal in the dying minutes of the games against Hearts and the Dee. You do not mention the lack of creativity in the other players supposed to be supplying the “clueless” You also mention Griffiths (often) but I do not see him playing. You do not mention the lack of pressing that was so obvious previously. The players seemed not to know the game plan or tactics. You do not mention Burke gamely sucking an orange, why was he not playing? Hayes KT and Sinclair all playing on the same wing, Toljin pushing up as high and sometimes beyond Forrest, it was difficult to watch players who seemed not to know what they were doing. Two games with last second winners, lucky are we..

Some folk are out of order criticising Neil Lennon, the man is just in the fucking door, leading a squad who must be so disappointed in the way they were dumped by Rodgers.
Those players, that squad OUR team have had to deal with that shit whilst training & trying to win games & trophies for US!
Give Lennon & the players a break for fuck sake, we haven’t seen success like we are seeing just now, appreciate it & get behind the manager & players right through to the end of the season, the players need us, they do what they do for us? remember that.
Just take a minute to think of the silverware we have been winning for years now, the players DESERVE our support & respect because they have delivered for us time & time again.

I felt thst Celtic were caught between two systems the one they played for the past two and a half seasons and Lenny’s changes. Charlie, a bit hard on Toljan, he kept passing back which was really frustrating but were the guys ahead showing for him? Hayes, who I though made the difference, was equally irritated at the lack of movement ahead on the left. However Dundee were packed in the final third and really well drilled and motivated. Their keeoer had a decent game, Forrest should have scored if he had used his laces instead of side footing it. Anyway three points and a break, we looked really good after the last break.

A team (Celtic) with a yearly playing budget of around £40 mill. comes up against other SPFL dross with around £1-2 mill. and yet we find it difficult to break down the dross and win. We cannot have it both ways, the “minnows ” of Europe but the big beasts of the SPFL. Some people need to get their brains in gear and remember the differences in budgets and remember we did not qualify for this years C.L. We depend on managers to showcase that most expensive talent, to find ways to overcome the minnows. Its not any use quoting sentiment, sentiment never won a game of football. We are continually told that there is no place for sentiment but suddenly the lyrics of the songs changes. The Departed is gone, but you can bet your boots that his departure will be quickly missed when reality bites, as his critics quickly turn there attention to other targets…

I’m trying to understand why French Rddie looks so uncomfortable and exasperated a lot of the time. A packed defense isn’t conducive to his style of play but against Dundee he was in the right position at the right time and saved the day. Yet I was hoping that Lenny would have made two changes at half time: Mikey Johnson off, Eddie off and Burke and Weah on. I was gobsmacked when all he did was bring Johnny Hayes on. Thus confirming that I’m no manager. But seriously does Eddie need to bulk up a la Dembele? How would you coach him?
