Celtic Diary Sunday January 27: We Need Justice For John.

Football first, then news of a heartfelt campaign.

Celtic opened up a little bit of a gap at the top of the table yesterday, finally overcoming a stubborn resistance from Hamilton at Celtic Park to secure a 3-0 win.

Whilst a win was never in doubt, it could be argued that it was a performance perhaps a little below that of the previous two post break games, and some have even attributed it to the inclusion of timothy Weah from the start, and the omission of the battering ram style of Oliver Burke.

On the face of it, they may have a point, but the rotation and introduction of wingers and forwards late on in games against a tiring but resolute defence is clearly the result of a bit of thinking on behalf of the manager.

Doing something a little bit different to won games late on, by simply changing the faces and energy level of the forwards, will help avoid those points dropped when teams simply park the bus.

We’ve yet to see how it works away from home, but so far having several top class wide players has made a significant difference to what could have been further slip ups against limited opposition.

Calum Mcgregors early goal, brilliantly taken to put just enough spin and direction on it to bamboozle an otherwise capable Hamilton keeper opening the scoring, but it seemed like days before Ryan Christie extravagantly used his knee to add to the scoring, before Scott Sinclair showed that he’s Scott sinclair again with a well taken header to add the third.

Mikael Lustig may get some criticism, but he had two assists yesterday, and the defence kept another clean sheet.

The only disappointment for me was the Green Brigade banner, which seems to show that the media campaign to divide support and club is beginning to work..

It called for the board to back the manager…a bizarre request considering that Rodgers has been allowed to raise the wage bill to record levels, and at the same time, in the managers own words, been given all he has asked for.

This kind of open criticism will not fill the players with confidence, as they are effectively saying that some of those on the pitch need to be replaced.

One has to admire the broad shoulders and exemplary attitude of Mikael Lustig given that virtually every demand for a new player is for a right back, on account of the fact that he’s “done “.

Why do we always feel we know better than the guy who sees them in training every day ?

Sure, there is room for improvement, and there is a worry that the defence may have to be rebuilt in the summer, but at the moment the priority has to be the eighth successive title, and a pragmatic approach to securing that may not please all of us, but a failure to do so would bring about a meltdown.

Three game into the second half of the season, and the signs are there that it will be mission accomplished come May.

Elsewhere, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock fought out a draw which meant they both slipp further behind the hoops, and “rangers ” face a tricky trip to Livingston today, where we are advised that the shops will be closed before and after the game after the behaviour pf the away support the last time out.

On to more serious matters now, and its been nearly a month since referee John Beaton was subject to threats that put himself and his family in fear of not only their safety, but their lives.

The police have still failed to find the culprit, which means we have to assume he is still out there.

He could strike at any time, and we have to think of Beaton, who is living in abject terror , and not even in a safe house..

Image result for safe house

Which has given me an idea.

We should start a crowdfund appeal to buy the residence above for Mr Beaton, who has been sadly let down by the forces of law and order who have a duty to protect him and his family.

We must do this urgently, as the perpetrator could strike at any time, and i, for one, do not want anything that may happen to be on my conscience.

I would like to think, and I’m sure that you would too, that when the safety of a man ..who was only doing his job…is at risk, we can say we did everything to help.

After all, the police have done nothing, and the media seem to have forgotten all about it.

Where are their campaigns ?

Why are they not asking for Justice for John ?

Image result for john beaton

We must act now, before its too late, so that this man can sleep safely at night, not frozen awake in terror every time a car goes past his house.

Write to your MSP, email the newspapers, the tv stations and your local radio outlet.

Meanwhile, All I ask is that you contribute £16.90 to help this man get his life back, help him to be able to take the kids to school without constantly looking over his shoulder to assure himself he isn’t being followed by the crazed lunatic who has threatened his well being.

I’ve never done this sort of thing before, but I believe there is a facility to enable those who have enough humanity in their souls to donate.

I’ll set up an account with WeAreThePaypal and give you the details later in the week.

After all, we must take this abhorrent threat seriously, even if it appears the police are not.

#justiceforjohn.

Remember, as one supporter tweeted last night, from the heart…

And the more people ignore this, including those in the media, the more they are supporting the disgraceful lack of action from those who are paid to protect those who just want to do an honest days work for an honest days pay

We might even be able to arrange a march in his support. I believe he likes marches and that sort of stuff.

Perhaps someone could create a badge, or a sash with Justice for john written on it.

Lets make a difference. He needs our help.

There’s a long list of recipients there, from burning team buses, beating up players from opposing teams or trashing their cars, attacking poor blameless referees. I could go on,and I normally do…

Why do we always feel we know better than the guy who sees them in training every day ?

You answered your own question with begining of the next paragraph. Also to add to it, too many big games have we have lost mainly coming from goals down the right hand side. Hamilton and st mirren aren’t the teams that test you, Athens did and look how that panned out. So I’d say a RB is a must for future proofing the squad and also at least one CB this window and one the following window, that would show future planning because in your own words the defence may need rebuilt in the summer.

In your opinion, do we need a RB ?

In your opinion, do you think we should be planning ahead and sign at least one CB this window ? Remembering we will be, most likely, be without our two starting CBs come the summer.

Yes and those issues should’ve been resolved in the summer until Lawwell right royally effed up.

From what I heard the ref last night gave it his best shot to slow the game down by calling it back.

Heard also the ball bhoy shouted out for him to hit it with his noggin?

BJF

Lustig brought balancemto rhe right of the back 4 but you always feel an injury is imminent, hopefully he stays clear of it until Ralston is available or a shock new signing, well maybe not! Hamilton were pretty stuffy yesterday but I suspect we will up our game against the likes of Aberdeen and Kilmarnock, we usually do. The team looked better with Burke in, I wonder if Bayo and Odsonne were playing if that would suit Weah better, it looked as if a ball over the top would suit his pace but that just isn’t Celtic’s game, I would like to see a bit of variety and the first half yesterday was the perfect opportunity. Three games against St Johnstine commng up, shades of Motherwell last season but Tommy Right’s team have has something like 10 or 11 clean sheets since we beat the 6-0, so glad about yesterday Hearts seem their bogey team and the tribute act also scored against them, as did Motherwell.

We are the paypal, brilliant! If the wage bill is because of Brendans signings fair enough but who has made all these signings? Lawwell? Rogers? Lack of defensive signings suggests to me that he isn t being backed sufficiently. Lustig has been a fantastic player for us and I believe if he quit international football he has another 2 great years in him, just needs a break which he hasn’t had.

SteveNaive

To be fair to the GB, the first part of the banner said ‘8 in a row is not a project’ which we would all agree on and their continued vocal support for the whole 90 minutes, irrespective of the scor,e is welcome.
Uralius…just on Lustig again…comment on how he played is not criticism. Giving the ball away like that yesterday will be punished by better teams. I know what he brings and his love for the club but all players peak and then descend. Hamilton targeted Izzy from goal kicks and free kicks and he lost every ball in the air but he kept feeding Sinclair and offering an angle. Sometimes we just see what we see.

“allowed to raise the wage bill to record levels”
Correct. However, you conveinently or ignorantly fail to mention the number of players that have left to help fund that increase in the overall average wage. You also very ignorantly fail to adress the one thing that you and all other board cheerleaders never ever address and thats the overall money that was earned vs the overall money spent on the actual team. I challenge you to break that down for us all please?

“Admire the broad shoulders of the board”
Well unless you can defend the first point by breaking down where all our money has gone, I can only assume you are encouraging us all to accept without question, the level of investment in the team, regardless of the money given to them by the fans? Given the fact the club is owned as a shareholding business by the fans, I think we all have the right to question much more than we already do. The Green Brigade are intellent and they are loyal, that is not in question, given their unwavering support in every game. The boards investment of OUR money IS in question. Just throwing in a comment about wage bill increases, does not explain the overall lack of investment in the team. The manager, and the previous 2 managers have all gotten the equivalent of crums from the rich mans table. I suspect you will come back and try to patronise us all about Celtics beautiful bank balance and how they as business men know better and how we should actually be in awe of theirfinanially prudence. Give it a rest! We are all sick of it! Its pure and simple greed. It is nothing but self interest by the board.

You then moan about how the fans concerns about the RB position is a moral blow to the team and Lustic. It may well be but it is unfortunately the truth and you dont win anything in life by burying your head in the sand and pretending things dont need to be adressed. If a RB had already been brought in to support Lustic, he would not be under pressure to perform in his later years. He has already came out and said he is in his last few months of his contract and understands that maybe it may be time for him to move on in the summer. The board have put him in a position where he is without support.

“there is a worry that the defence may have to be rebuilt in the summer, but at the moment the priority has to be the eighth successive title, and a pragmatic approach to securing that may not please all of us”
WTF! How is it pragmatic to to recognise on one hand a need to strengthen but then decide not to do so “until the next window” but ofcourse that window comes and then as time as shown, they often dont stregthen. Besides, have you not being paying attention to what happens in the summer ie Champions league qualification? Do you think it is pragmatic to get rid of the players we have in defence at a time when we need players bedded in and ready for the qualifiers? Do you think it is pragmatic to have such players leave for nothing given one is a loan and the other is runnign down his contract. Sounds to me like it is leavig the manager with a increasingly difficult challange iof getting the £30 million from the CL ( as if it wasnt hard enough). There is nothing pragmatic about it.

“Why do we always feel we know better than the guy who sees them in training every day ?”
Sorry but Brendan Rodgers has made it very clear that he wants more players in and he only wants “QUALITY” which he stated “YOU NEED TO SPEND A BIT TO GET THAT QULITY”. He also stated he “doesnt take anything to do with that” when talking about the players brought in the door. He also stated “we didnt have a good window” in the summer and made severl comments about how “at the very minimum you need to try to replace the players you have lost”. So it would appear the guy who does know beter is asking for more QUALITY investment in the team?

I’ve no idea what happened at Hibs and usually I wouldn’t give a toss. But I ask you this when was the last time a manager got pumped and the details were all over the media in a couple of hours? What were the conversations behind McCoist’s gardening leave? Don’t know, don’t expect to. Neil’s temper is a flaw but one that many great managers have been afflicted, and successful with. Maybe players these days don’t like getting shouted at. But I smell a rat and it smells of a dismissal due to gross misconduct with no pay-off.Hearing Dempster’s name but not There’s more to this shit and a compliant media are lapping it up.

Mikael Lustig undone his laces to set up 2.

JMcG…

THE history books record that a crowd of just 4,000 gathered at Celtic Park on this day (January 14) in 1928 to watch Celtic take on Dunfermline. Those hardy souls who had braved the elements in the hope of seeing a victory for the Hoops would not be disappointed.

In the event, they saw more than just another Celtic win. They witnessed one of the most impressive and incredible goalscoring feats ever produced in top-class football, and something which has never been repeated by any Celtic player since.

On that cold January day, Celtic defeated Dunfermline Athletic 9-0 and Jimmy McGrory scored EIGHT of those goals.

Indeed, he remains the only player in Scottish football to have achieved this, and it’s a record that is unlikely ever to be equalled or surpassed.

McGrory had been on a rich vein of form ahead of the Dunfermline match – he scored two hat-tricks in the two games prior to the fixture – and he would finish the season with 47 league goals to his name, but no-one could have predicted the phenomenal tally he chalked up that day.

He was a powerful presence in the air and was reputed to have scored around half of his eventual 468 goals tally for Celtic with his head, but on that January day in 1928, it’s reported that none of his eight goals against Dunfermline were headers.

And it may well have been a popular quiz question of the time to ask who scored Celtic’s other goal in that 9-0 victory. The answer is Alec Thomson, a fine goalscorer in his own right, who managed to net 98 goals in 451 appearances for the Hoops between 1922-34.

This match summed up McGrory’s extraordinary ability, with the striker scoring a hat-trick in the opening nine minutes of the match. His performance set a British record for the number of goals in a single top-flight match and the only Celt who has come close to beating it was Dixie Deans in November 1973, when he hit SIX against Partick Thistle.

The 69-year-old McGrory was waiting for Dixie in the tunnel as he walked off the park that day, embracing the striker with the words: ‘Son, I really thought you were going to take my record there!’

Conflicting news and views coming out about the Lenny bhoy, but whatever the real truth is, putrid Petrie will be at the back of it. The root cause of this is usually money, or lack of it, lack of new players being brought in, lack of investment in the team. When you look at ALL the other SPFL teams, every single one of them, except one of course are scrambling about looking for loan deals. Lenny was no exception, he was most vociferous in his calling out for new players, could you blame him? absolutely not, he has lost more than most of his first team players. We are the only club that so far is more than solvent, with more cash in the bank than any other and yet no sign of the much needed new players. Of course Celtic have this awful record of not investing in first team players and yet we have this bloated squad. That to me signifies failure, a failure of forward planning. For once could we not just dip into the tin and bring out some good players instead of the usual rabbits. The one exception of course is the gobshites who are desperate, desperate to win the league. Simple business techniques of course demand investment, forward planning is key, at Celtic we play the “just in time” technique a system that is eminently not suited to a football club. Wake up and do the right thing, once, just once.. Good luck Lenny bhoy, take putrid to the cleaners….
