Celtic Diary Friday January 25: Referee Controversy Re-Ignites

A glance at the match stats, as they are known, from the clash with St mirren, reveals an interesting if unlikely fact.

Only if these stats are accurate, of course. Its entirely possible that they are just guesswork.

St mirren were in possession for 28% of the time the ball was in play. Lets assume that actual playing time was the full ninety minutes, which, of course it wasn’t.

Celtic committed fourteen fouls, presumably when St Mirren had the ball. Thats one roughly every minute and a half.

St Mirren committed one far less frequently, at about every eight or nine minutes, which is not how I remember it.

Are we to conclude that Celtic fouled to regain possession ?

And St Mirren didn’t?

A couple of weeks ago Celtic asked Ian Maxwell, the vacuum at the centre of the SFA, for an explanation of some of the more bizarre decisions made by referee John Beaton during the Glasgow derby in December.

Maxwell has so far refused to do so.

Beaton , despite death threats to his family and himself, bravely continues to referee…oh wait. skip the bit in parenthesis, we all know thats bollocks, and maybe someone with a set of bollocks ought to be calling the media-who will blame the Press Association- out on this one.

For once, just for fucking once, lets have someone tell the truth before our game disappears in a puff of self righteous and self serving  smoke.

There was further embarrassment for John Fleming when a little girl had to explain the rules concerning throw ins to one of his elite band of officials…

Well, if they don’t want to tell the truth, why should I ?

There seems to be a little bit of concern surrounding who selects the players that have arrived, or are about to arrive at Celtic Park.

So far, two of them, Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah have made their Celtic debuts.

They both have two goals from two games.

I don’t care who is picking these players, as long as he continues to do so.

Burke may not be marquee signings along the lines of Jermaine Defoe and Steven Davis

Image result for morgan freeman michael douglas

He might only be here on loan, but one could argue its what happens here and now that counts, and when combined with an attitude such as Burkes, thats when you get a result..

“I feel at home already and I’m sure if I continue to keep doing well I’m sure I’ll want to stay here as a player.

“My career has been a bit stop-start and it’s not been great for me. This is just football – that’s what happens. Sometimes things go your way and sometimes they don’t.

“But I feel now that I’m ready to give my all and it’s really important for me now to get my head down and do the very best that I can.

“Knowing that I’m going to play football, I think that’s the main thing for me now especially at a young age.
“I’ve been sort of starved of football for the past couple of years now so that’s all I want to do.

“I just want to be out there enjoying myself on nights like Wednesday. It was a massive relief for me to score and an amazing feeling. I feel really happy.”

Timothy Weah seems to have found his spiritual home..

“It’s great to get another goal.

“But I’m not even worried about me today.

“I’m super happy for [Oli Burke] getting his first two, so we’ll celebrate that.

And a shout-out to the guys, they played 100% throughout the whole match.”

“Besides the fact we’re getting goals, the overall vibe of the team has been great,”

“It just shows on the field that the chemistry is there.

“I feel like I’ve been with Celtic forever, so it’s a good feeling.”

Then theres Vakoun Bayo, who has only just got here.. and was presented to the fans under the lights on Wednnesday..

“When I first heard of the offer from Celtic, I was surprised and very happy,”

“Initially, I couldn’t believe what was happening. It all happened very quickly.”

Yesterday was really moving for me,”

“The fans played a big role in my decision to move here.

“I’ve just arrived in Glasgow. I haven’t played for a month, so I’m going to train hard and when the coach decides I’m ready then I’ll play. I would like to keep scoring goals and win trophies.”

Attitude, ability and a capacity to become instantly Celtic minded.

All three have all three of those attributes.

So when supporters question who found and suggested the Ukranian winger Shved, consider this..

Who cares ?

Meanwhile, Charlie Nicholas is still a knob.

We’re not quite sure what he means by control, and he certainly isn;t referring to todays deadline regarding the case of the Takeover Panel versus Dave King.

It might be worth keeping an eye on Phil MacGhiollabhan over the next day or two.

Theres little chance that you’ll get proper analysis in our SMSM.

Martin Williams in the Herlad sums up where we are at…but I’m curious as to what grounds he has as to why King is “expected ” to comply..

RANGERS chairman Dave King is expected to finally comply with a court order to make a multi-million-pound offer to buy out the rest of the club’s shareholders today.

The 63-year-old businessman who had been defending claims of contempt of court over his failure so far to make the bid agreed to meet a series of deadlines in December with the Takeover Panel financial watchdog before finally fulfilling his pledge to make a bid to existing shareholders at 20p a share.

The Herald understands that the Rangers chief has complied with commitments on a series of timetabled preliminary steps and that there is an expectation he will make the offer by Friday’s 5.30pm deadline and stave off any possible future court action.

King , of course, claimed in an earlier court appearance that he was “penniless “, so “rangers ” fans will be hoping he can apply the same midas touch that has made him millions in a few short months to the clubs accounts.

One way of raising money is by issuing a hit single, and with the Eurovision Song contest only a few weeks away, Sammy Sash and the Staunch Stevies have put forward what could prove to be the British entry…

Image result for feeling proud

Perhaps the release of such a heartfelt anthem will re-unite those who are beginning to doubt..

Loyally, he went on to staunchly defend the player after his mistake against Kilmarnock..with great dignity..

Serious stuff again now..this is the parking exclusion zone for matchdays, as suggested by Glasgow city  council..

This is a list of what Celtic bring to the city..

The spending of Celtic and supporters worth £165million to Scottish economy.

– Attendances of almost 2million.

– Helping to support the equivalent of 2,820 full-time equivalent jobs.

– 25th strongest brand in world football.

– Paid £20m in taxes since 2012 and this excludes £millions in PAYE & NI

If I could discover how much the city receives in business rates from the club, and the business rates they receive from businesses which depend on or thrive due to the club, and its support,  then I think we’d have a strong case to argue against simply moving the parked cars somewhere else, somewhere which means the congestion would last a lot longer than it does now.

forcing supporters to walk a mile or more to their cars just means any problems are being shunted sideways, and not dealt with.

Todays the last day you can email your protest. ring them and ask for the address.

And then ring them again.

And all next week.

In fact, we’re doing a podcast next week.

Does anyone from Glasgow City council wish to debate the issue with me ?

Its Friday, and of course that means its time for

Knob of the Week

Its got to be …Stevie G..

Recommended by his own supporters, after he introduced his two marquee signings into a game against Scotlands form team of last year, on their own pitch on a cold January night, changing the formation and personnel  that had given the club their greatest win in their short history and then blaming the players for playing the square ball…

He makes Warbs, Pedro and coisty look like Stein, shankly and Clough.

Long may he reign..

I’d say we are much higher in the brand league than 25.have to be. maybe not.

On another note Livingston with their brutal but fair approach to the game may see gers cower a bit here. their team doesn’t have the muscle of aberdeen kilmarnock or hearts. I don’ think they’ll win this one either

Great read as always Gents.
Quick one on procession stats. I had my mind blown by one of the guys from Opta who corrected my misunderstanding of what possession stats actually represent. I had always assumed that possession related to the amount of time that you had the ball while in play however I was mistaken.
‘Possession’ (as defined by the stat) is the ratio of successful passes. So if you have 2 teams playing and there are 100 successful passes in a game – Team A has 700 and Team B has 300 it means that Team A had 70% possession. So if I go on a mad 2 minute run up the wing and then boot the ball out of play, from a stat perspective that doesn’t count as possession.

So that time we beat Barca and everyone was loosing their minds about the amount of possession Barca had ; it’s just that they had a (much) high % of successful passes than we did

Strange but true

I’m guessing that if you pass successfully it goes to one of your own players therefore maintaining possession of the ball. I think there may be a very close one to one correlation with successful passing and time on the ball.

Agreed – you’d need to reference against the misplaced passes stats to get a feel for the margin between the two.
High misplaced passes would suggest that the procession stats could be less reliable than when you have a low number of misplaced passes. Would think that Celtic had a pretty low number of misplaced passes against St Mirren given that Boyata, Gordon and Lustic weren’t playing together!! 🙂

This completely misses the point re Shved.

Brendan either selected or, at least, wholeheartedly approved of the signings of Burke, Weah & Bayo and has spoken enthusiastically about working with them. Although very early, the signs are that the 1st 2 will be very successful.

This isn’t the case with Shved and in these cases it usually ends only one way (clue – it’s not spelt “success”).

Was watching the National news the other night on BBC. There was an article about the FA being asked to do something about the rise of abuse that their referees get.
They mentioned a Scottish referee recently getting death threats.

So therefore Beatons death threats which have not been proved, were being aired on National television, which was about a story about a different FA in a different country.

Raymo , was watching the same the other night. My jaw nearly hit the floor when the piece went from abuse of minor league and amatuer league referees in England to the police protection needed by a Scottish ref.
Fake news is now so easily to spread , if you have the outlets.

I’ll repeat again, the most important figure at a football club is the manager of the football club, at least that’s how it should be.
Brendan has just spoken on the Maryan Shved deal & made it quite clear it’s not his signing.
That right there is a fucking problem.

Not one player should come in the door or go out the door unless Brendan sanctions it.

Is Peter Lawwell & Lee fkn Congerton signing players behind Brendan’s back?
Is that right?

We don’t need projects.

Lawwell out!

SFA unfit for purpose

Reply to  Monti

Projects are fine , as long as , they dont take anything away from the first team budget and the manager has agreed to the signing.
If those conditions are not being met then we do have a real fucking problem.
Brendans comments suggest it.
If Lawell thinks he can survive Brendan chucking it then hes deluded.
If anyone has got lawells ear then have a word before he fucks this up.

Iancelt – Irrelevant to success or – lack of success – of some of BR’s signings ;2 seasons : 2 trebles (record) , 90m turnover followed by 100m turnover (record ) driven by BR’s ON-FIELD success .
I’m told the board like “bottom lines ” , well there’s a bottom line set of stats for them to think on .

Think every club and manager has players who looked like they may have worked out but didn’t . Maybe commper isn’t that bad
His face just doesn’t fit. When I saw him playing he looked ok he might fit in to another clubs model. Scottish football can be a challenging transition for any player

Think there is a bit of micromanaging by Lawwell that frustrates the fuck out it Rodgers. Probably why Lennon walked. We are not a club who keeps managers long. Maybe it’s the way it is. We are kept in the dark in these matters

Articulate , intelligent , grounded and smart enough to “bat away ” the odd loaded hunnish question .

He also couldn’t have spoken more highly of our manager ” coach Brendan ” 🙂 ; clearly a factor in his joining us ( take note board ). Also , great read on Celtic Star regarding the Amsterdam assault on Celtic fans of 2013 !

jimboh

Fake News,The real reason for the GCC imposing a parking exclusion zone is all down to Scotland’s Finest, The Boys in (True) Blue.

Because our Staunch Defenders of the Public Order feel it incumbent on them to Film ALL Celtic Fans inside Paradise ( for our own safety of course ), there are a disproportionate number of car jacking, break-ins on match days, in and around Celtic Park, obvious given that Celtic is the most followed Club in Scotia.

So rather than returning the Polis to patrolling the streets of our fair city GCC have decided, in their wisdom (read as blindness to the economic impact that Celtic brings to Alba and Glesga in particular)) to impose a parking exclusion zone that transfers the risk of malfeasance to surrounding areas with a now bigger target base for the wrongdoers to revel in. With the additional benefit of medjia fuelled blame being apportioned by residents of Celtic drivers being inconsiderate parking in their streets and attracting the “wrong types” of bad boys. Prompting the usual Celtic BAAAD headlines.

In a flagrant show of Whatabooterie, what about Sevco eh?
How is their dilapidated Crumbledome serviced by Public Transport?
250 yards away from a subway station, 10/15 minutes walk from a Bus station, 500 yards or so away from a Motorway slip road in one direction and a quarter of a mile (if that) in another direction.

And the pyure wee Bears moan at Anti Proddistant discriminationand bigotry and awe they Cnuts goat it in fur thum.

Only in Jockland the last Imperial Colony.

I echo that sentiment about Hugh McIlvanney as a journalist he was second to none, but it was his rich Scottish accent too that appealed to me as well. There is no comparison with most of todays so called journalists and Hugh’s immeasurable talent for sports writing.
Bill McLarens rugby commentary gave an insight into that sport that was also second to none. Both were giants in the “Ball games”.
But I also love the rich Scottish commentaries of Bill Paterson whose narrations enrich the programmes.
Hearing a wee breaking story that Lenny is leaving Hibs, its been reported by the BBC, but I am unsure if its permanent…

Monti – your insult to Burns (the name itself should cause respect, the late Tommy) is a disgrace. Burns is a Scottish legend and there are many life truths in his poems. Humility from “To a Louse”, Equality from “A man’s a man for a’that” and not holding grudges and embracing the New Year from “Auld Lang Syne”. Fantastic stuff – the beating heart of Scotland and the ethos of Celtic. Educate yourself man – it’s not too late! Here we go – 8IAR
