Celtic Diary Sunday January 20: Major Shift In Refereeing Policy

Did anyone else spot it ?

I nearly fell off the couch. Oh, i was on the couch because i don;t do SFA games. I’ll watch them, preferably on an illegal stream, but not a penny from my pocket goes into theirs.

So, what was so different about Andrew Dallas’s performance yesterday that sets him apart from every single referee this season who has officiated at a Celtic game ?

In an earlier diary i said I’d be “surprised and disappointed ” if Brendan Rodgers hadn’t offered his tuppence worth at the recent meeting with the SFA, and it appears that not only has he said what we all wanted to say, they have taken it on board.

For now , at least.

When Calum McGregor was on the end of a clumsy tackle from and Airdrie-or Clydebank, if you’re of a certain age- defender , the referee did not hesitate to pull out his yellow card.

Not only that, he showed it to the Airdrie player.

This simple act kept the cloggers from clogging.

It changed the game, and no doubt frustrated the Airdrie ( Clydebank ) defenders, who now had to resort to timing their tackles impeccably, which they couldn’t do, and it allowed Celtic players to express themselves a little.

Celtic won the game 3-0, and it should have been more.

As we predicted in the diary Celtic got an early penalty, but chose to make a game of it by allowing Scott Sinclair to take it. Sinclair then got himself into the “Footballs Funniest Moments ” show when he tapped a tap in right over the fucking tap of the stand behind the goal.

Enraged, he finally scored his first a few moments later, then added another, and then added another, but old habits die hard among the refereeing fraternity when that one was ruled offside, presumably because the linesman had money on Timothy Weah scoring the next goal.

Sinclair is bottom left..

And with an exquisite finish to a Boyata through ball, Weah did indeed open his account at Celtic. Word from the Dubai camp was that he was something special, and there were a number of occasions when he came on that showed there may be something in this.

Pace, movement and intelligence. And an eye for goal.

Others who looked good were Tony Ralston, who clearly has taken up the Save Me Millions challenge from Brendan and Peter , along with Oliver Burke, who put in a tremendous shift, and was unlucky not to open his account.

The hard working Burke caused the Airdrie (clydebank ) defence a lot of problems, and his style meant that space was created for others, such as Forrest and Sinclair to drag the defence around a bit.

So that when the fresh pace of Weah and Johnstone was introduced, there could have been no doubting the outcome.

As for Airdrie, they and their support acted in exactly the same as any new club does when it comes to Celtic Park, disgracefully.

When the penalty was awarded for a trip on Emilio Izaguirre, their players surrounded the stricken honduran while he was on the ground.

Image result for celtic 3 airdrie 0

Scott Brown defended his team mate, and Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic imposingly walked the entusiastic Airdrie keeper back to his goal.

The keeper and the referee , incidentally, can be seen on a video in the tunnel laughing together at Timothy weah as he walked past them…

I don’t know how to embed that, but its on twitter if anyone can help.

Maybe that explains Weah’s reaction to his goal…

Image result for celtic 3 airdrie 0

Perhaps, though, the occasion and the surroundings were just too much for the Airdrie players and fans…after all, they have never been involved in a match at a proper ground before…

And the pre match huddle too, seemed to be a step up from the usual “Intae them ” of previous games..

So, Celtic are into the fifth round draw. Aberdeen will have to wait, they will face a plucky Stenhousemuir side who earned a draw at Pittodrie in a replay in ten days time. Out altogether of the running are Motherwell, who lost to a plucky  Ross County.

Plucky newcomers “rangers “, with their new signings Jermaine Defoe and Steven Davis will also play their opening game in the tournament as Fridays nights clash with Cowdenbeath fell victim to the severe weather over in Fife, or wherever Cowdenbeath is.

A local referee turned up and said it was too cold, the pitch was dangerous and it would be dark by kick off time, so the match was cancelled.

Defoe was reported to be disappointed that he couldn’t make his debut, but delighted that the low temperatures meant the governments Cold Weather Payments would kick in.

Some have claimed that there’s a bit of a conspiracy behind this postponement.

With no football for a few weeks, and no home games for a week or so, some think that “rangers ” were struggling to find enough money to pay for travel and accommodation, but thats clearly nonsense as they are apparently paying Defoe around £60,000 a week.

Or maybe they were waiting for the arrival of their next marquee signing, as despite claims that this is going to be a nip and tuck title race, all they have actually done is bring in two old guys who arent getting a game-and haven’t been for some time-at their previous clubs.

On huge wages…

Having seen two of our new players in action, we really don’t have to worry.

At Ibrox, an out of position Mikey Johnstone struggled at the spearhead of an out of form side.

The options now have improved, and between Rodgers and Gerrard, there can be little doubt who is relishing the next clash between champions and pretenders..

Elsewhere, and we like to keep our finger on the pulse of world news..

And we like to ask the odd difficult question…such as what exactly is that tattoo on Scott Allans leg ?

I’m sure I’ve seen it before somewhere..

There are fifteen clubs in European football who had one million or more supporters pay to watch them in action…

But of course, only one had five hundred million…which is why they are in a completely different table, all on their own.

Back to Friday for the caption competition..

Today..

There is an appeal on twitter, a chap called Adrian Cumming @samshusband who is commendably doing something practical to help those without homes or shelter during the current bad weather.

Its a simple and brilliant idea.

All those jackets that no longer fit, or sleeping bags no longer used, and blamkets and so on, he would like to take them off your hands and pass them on to those sleeping outside in this current cold spell.

I’ll be ringing him today for further detials, and in the meantime, could I ask you to have a look for anything you think might be useful ?

Literally, you could be saving a life.

Poor wee Derek Ferguson went well off the party line on the tranny yesterday noting that Ross McCormack at 32 was a mere stripling not like a player at ’35 or 36 whose legs have gone.’ That’s ‘expereinced at the highest level’ you mean Deek read the brief!

I don’t think Derek feels the same about his former club as his young brother does,so I reckon it was a well-aimed barb.

Good on him.

I’d put money on not a single soul from Clydebank being in any way involved with that sorry shower of shite known as Airdrieonians. The original Clydebank FC still exists and plays in the junior leagues.

Good to know that Yoker.
Hope the “Bankies” are playing the new huns in their (the “Bankies”) League soon.
Just triggered a thought. If the six counties looks like going back to its spiritual home in a United Ireland and at the same time the new hun fans are sick of having the pish ripped out of them and want to emigrate to Ulster to follow-follow Linfield, could it be that their respective boats collided and sent all them orange bastards to the bottom of the Irish Sea?
Just a thought but it fuckin’ made me feel good! 🙂

Think I missed the point that the orange scum would be exiting ‘Ulster’ heading for Scotia; hence the potential collision of their respective boats.

Celtic looked a bit rusty yesterday but as the game went on they controlled it, that said Bain didn’t touch the ball until the 11 th minute. Boyata seemed to run the show both at the back and in midfield, hope the club has a replacement lined up. Burke needs game time, he put in a shift but doesn’t naturally fit the “back to goal hold up the play” style of striker we need. “Tim O’ Weah”, really, the announcer was having a laff but Weah is a lively guy who feeds off the crowd and I think he will make a real impression. Mind you Airdrie didn’t offer much threat
but I can’t imagine Hamilton or St Mirren will either. Really like Ralston, gets in and about opponents.

For the 1st competitive game this year, I was pleased with the result but BT you must stop utilising commentators with an aligiance to the dark side to comment on Celtic…Sally can’t even mention the name Celtic… you’ve did it with Chris Sutton with commenting on the dark side.

So you missed Boyata making a cunt of his forward passing apart from that? 4 out of 4 straight to Airdrie players! Or did you do a Beaton and see it but didn’t think it warranted a response?
Bongo, a long time ago when I lived in Amsterdam there was (maybe still is) a very pleasant drink called Bongo. It was effectively Vodka and Bitter Lemon in a bottle. Anyway, I can’t even guesstimate how many bottles of that fine stuff I’d need to drink to be as fucking blind to Boyata as you clearly are. He’s a soul-less, heart-less prick who’ll drop a team-mate in the shit as soon as look at him. Get him tae fuck NOW. I wouldn’t even expect a transfer fee, just get him tae fuck and Jozo with him. If Brendan can’t see what’s patently in front of him then I’ll repeat, he’s NOT Celtic quality. I’d bring back Neil in a heart-beat and give him a budget and control over spending until that piece of shite Lawwell squirmed tae fuck out of OUR club.
I realise I ONLY have ONE opinion but if yer always right why TF would ye need more? 🙂

“I don’t do SFA games”. All games in Scotland operate under the SFA; if you do SPFL then you do SFA.

Burke had a few poor misses and, although a better fill-in than Mikey, I wouldn’t expect him to play there much. Haste ye back Eddy.

The Airdrie player who didn’t harangue Izzy was the player who fouled him, as he knew it was a stonewaller.

Seriously, other than a frothing mouth, their keeper had permaraging Hun down to a tee.

Scott Brown gave it back to him in spades after the goals and hopefully someone else will take on this mantle when he leaves.

Pass forward while you`re in the middle and should be under pressure.

Ball at the feet.

Goal yes? But Boyata can`t pass a ball forward under pressure out the back line. Should he aim for the Ref?

Two great reads from eTims’ twitter feed: Wee Matt McGinn frae The Calton, a superb example of wit, poetry, prose and song with a genuine Socialist heart. I was privileged to spend a wee while with him in the early 70s. His heart was so big he even wrote a song involving Dundee (are ye payin’ attention, fermer?), The Dundee Ghost. Anyway, MHEN like Matt McGinn deserve their place in History: Whae’s like ‘im? Damn few an’ they’re a’deid.

I was watching the game against the Mini Huns of Airdrie, in particular Oliver Burke. I was looking for the natural talent of the most expensive ever Scottish player, I saw scant evidence of it. If ever there was a young fella that has lost his way, he was it. Two clubs have paid a fortune for his services as a football player, but over burdened with his price tag it hung like a weight on his young shoulders. In coming to Celtic, he will be taught by the best development manager of his generation, Brendan Rodgers. It struck me that he will leave Celtic with much more confidence, more tactically astute, better positioned, a much better all round player. There can be no doubt but Oliver has an abundance of football talent, he just needs to be re-wired and Brendan is a master electrician. If anything Oliver’s currant club should be paying Celtic a big development fee, for this rewiring. The young Tim, Mr. Weah, on the other hand is filled to the brim with talent and the confidence that goes with it, he makes telling defence splitting runs, I cannot wait to see him team up with Oddsone. “Pasteurised not Plagiarised”.

it is baking in the sun but not baked enough to not spot pish talk. As if west brom are going to offer a development fee. Agreed he looks green but he is not a striker, he’s a right midfielder with pace who’s gema is facing the goal. He isn’t a hold up player I think rodgers has had a head knock, some of his latest decisions to put players in positions foreign to them is bewildering. What is he playing at? no more bizarre choices when we now have playersa to fill spots in all positions. Not a fan of ralston though, hope I’m wrong

Reply to  iancelt67

Why could you not just have post that response instead of your inane comment, it made you look silly. Burke hasn’t played regular football for years, he needs to get the right kind of development and that will come from Brenda. He has lost his way and that was shown on Saturday, its not just about pace and power its about the game overall,, positioning, awareness, knowing when and where to run. He is green, but Rodgers isn’t the first manager to try players in various positions, big Jock was a master at that. My point is this.. West Brom SHOULD be paying us a development fee and that should be reflected in that part of the wages WE are paying him, he will not get it anywhere else, certainly not in England.. When he came up to Celtic, I thought that it would be great to see if he could play as a striker, if you don’t try, you never know and when better to try than against the Airdrie Huns..
