Celtic Diary Friday December 28: Job Done…Almost

At the start of the month, all we wanted was a League Cup win, Europe after Christmas and top of the table at the break.

Barring a four goal defeat at Ibrox-which isn’t going to happen-the players and management can pop off to dubai with a sense of so far…so good.

Aberdeen provided a stiff test on Boxing Day, with new signing Willie Collum turning in an almost match winning performance for them with two penalties and an onset of blindness as Sam Cosgrove caried out an assault on keeper Craig Gordon.

Three shots on target were all Aberdeen had to show for an hour and a halfs work. Two were penalties-at least according to Collum-and the other a foul on the keeper.

And Niall McGinn somehow stayed on the pitch presumably because Collum didn’t see it…

And still it wasn’t enough. In a dazzling display of derring doo, Celtic gave Aberdeen a taste of east end spunk as the hoops moved up a gear and scored three times in the last quarter of an hour or so, which was enough to bury the northern sides hopes and dreams for another season.

Scott Sinclair scored three perfect strikers goals, and Oddsone Edoaurd put forward evidence that he can still be the perfect striker with the gentlest of dinks over a despairing Aberdeen keeper to put the seal on his twenty minute cameo.

Maybe it doesn’t matter how bad the referees are after all, this one gave Aberdeen a three goal lift, and they are far and away the second best team in Scotland, and still Celtic prevailed, and away from home as well.

And that may shatter a few illusions..

So, there’s just one game to go now, and its over in the land that time forgot..

Image result for ibrox

The picture above illustrates just how much they have been forgotten by once friendly benefactors, especially when compared to the approach to Celtic Park.

Image result for the celtic way

Its not just appearances where the two clubs differ. The term “well run club ” can only apply to one of them..

I can’t make the Old firm game, as the motor is in for a service..

Image result for tardis

and anyway, they’ve put a wall, or ” tarrier barrier ” , as one of their support called it. displaying an almost unique sense if humour, in that he has one…so parking could be difficult.

Judging by the SLO over there, a number of guests, sponsors and lodge members won’t be going either. It seems like they have sold some of the tickets more than once, which I’m fairly sure is against the rules, but as we know they don’t have to worry about rules and things as they are far too important to the brand for that, as this report from the Sun quite possibly confirms..

DERBY WAGER

Rangers vs Celtic – Ladbrokes forecast punters will bet more than £10m on Old Firm clash as it looks set to break Scottish football betting records

The bookies expect punters to wager more than £7m in the run-up to kick-off alone which would eclipse the money spent on last year’s Old Firm New Year derby

And who sponsors the league? Ladbrokes..!

The article contains a handy list of odds and ideas to get anyone thinking of having a bet to think even more about it.

Events have proved we weren’t paranoid enough some years ago, so lets make sure we’re properly on the ball this time.

Sponsors won’t want to lose that kind of money, and they’ll no doubt make that perfectly clear to those who run the game in Scotland.

Ladbrokes’ David Macdonald said: “The highly-anticipated New Year derby means Scottish football betting records will be smashed on Saturday.

New Year’s Day  is on Tuesday, and this game is on the preceding Saturday, so its not a New Year derby. It doesn;t even take place in the same year as Tuesday.

“While the market points towards a Celtic win at this stage, but when it comes to this classic game all bets are off.”

Classic game ? One of the clubs has only been playing top table football for a couple of years, and has never won a senior trophy.

All bets should be off.

Especially with a company that is raking on money on the back of perpetuating the myth that there’s nothing corrupt about Scottish football.

Somewhat tediously, we’re now in the middle of the build up to Scotland showpiece match, where anyone and everyone has an opinion.

I frankly couldn’t care less. They’re not very good, their support is ludicrously badly behaved and if the game is in the headlines on Saturday night, it’ll be because of the trouble at the match, and not the exquisite skills on the park.

But its the screams of anguish and the look of pain that eminates fron those same flies now circling a different shite that makes it all worthwhile.

Theirs a minutes silence befiore the game, in honour of the 1971 Ibrox disaster, which was the more tragic of sevral incidents at the ground over the years.

Then there’s about an hour of sectarian abuse, with references to child abuse and famine thrown in, before they start chucking golf balls, batteries and stale urine into the Celtic support.

Then they’ll go home and beat their wives up.

And someone, maybe someone nipping into a garage for fuel, or a ship for fags, will get stabbed and spend the night on a life support machine.

If this is Scotlands showpiece, then its time to call it a fucking day.

Transfer news…as it stands nothing has been confirmed, either officially or unofficially, and as we have repeatedly stated, if its in the Scottish press then unless it has appeared elsewhere first, then its bollocks.

Timothy Weah is still more likely than not to be at Celtic next week, Timothy Castagne, a right back might be as well, but all the other names are just names…including Scott McKenna, although he is leaving Aberdeen, because he wants to.

Someone in the scouting department obviously got a bit confused when he was told we would only be interested in good tims…

How many times when a foul is commited is there a protest from the player who was fouled. 99% to 100? No complaints here from Gordon or Benkovic. And saiz Cosgrove doesn’t have to be looking at the ball. That was planned to get in front of the keeper and opposing players are entitled to do so if they want. Benkovic was trying to get in between them there was argy bargy. Cosgrove then moves away from Benkovic and gordon. Gordon has ample time to plan a save but doesn’t. Sounding like a two bob watch here. Tit for tat no complaints from Celtic because there wasn’t a foul commited. Hey I’m a fan and the first to get my back up but that’s all fair. You should watch Serie A and witness grabbing in the box. Players are entitled to stand in front of other players without playing the ball as long as they’re onside. I better stop before I’m booted out of town

Yeah well I won’t relinquish the balls to disagree when I think I have a point. Not up for one eyed reporting or victimhood, it’s swings and roundabouts with refs and their decisions. They help and hinder everyone, no agenda , no masonry (probably was in the 60s, I remember the tiny Wharton picture) all part of being a fan going home robbed or rewarded by refs. Even with Var (refer to the final and the atrocious decision against the Croats ) they get it wrong. And it’s the admins job to play the provocateur to garner anger and blame. I think refereeing in Scotland is below par because it’s part timers doing the job. Nothing else and players and getting more clever into conning refs (salah v Newcastle ). So really every fan who pays 40 pounds to watch a game has the right to vent at refs. Think it’s easy to get bogged down with it all though instead of concentrating on the football. I’ll fuck off for a while and not post on here watch the game tomorrow and enjoy it. Not bothered and too old to fall victim to snide remarks.
Hail fucking hail

Nothing snide about it mate – I think you are wrong on both the penalty and the blatant shoving for the third goal. No way either would have been given in the EPL. That said they have a much better standard of referees there. Professionals who are forbidden to referee matches where they might have links to or gainst any particular team. You seem to be in a minority with your interpretations of the play and that’s fine. I simply think you are wrong about those decisions and I watched with both eyes open and the benefit of replays.

Iancelt67 did you miss the amount of complaining that Gordon was doing to Collum? Furthermore of course he has to be looking at the ball or else he is blatantly playing the man!

Reply to  Maryhillbhoy

No he doesn’t have to be looking at the ball look at the rule book. What you think everybody has to be looking at the ball all game? No they don’t he stood in front of the keeper staying inside because it was a throw in then moved away. No foul only my opinion though.

Iancelt67 I always doubt the word of any man who has to point out he is a Celtic fan. Celtic fans shouldn’t have to point that out . If u are comparing the interpretation of the carry-on that takes place I with Italian defences & anywhere else in the World that is fine . Most know Italians are wrong , in Scotland anything goes when blocking and holding the Celtic keeper but look side ways at the opposing goal keeper & it’s a free out .
Because certain interpretations take place in Italy or Scotland doesn’t mean they are right

Reply to  D J Smyth

yeah well ok. Been on here for a few years now it would be odd if I supported anyone else. Really odd. Everyone here is a Celtic fan, think when I was younger I would blame refs and everybody else if we didn’t win or drew. Got to grow out of that shit. The lack of any mention of the first penalty being dubious or foul play on Gordon by. Cosgrove in the press or blogs or twitter tells me both were legit goals/penalties. There was something on kerrydale st but you expect that

I see the oafs are saying we’re a certainty to mar the minutes silence for the unfortunate fans who died in the Ibrox Disaster. I hope the supporters who are there do whats right and have an impeccable dignified minutes silence. I despise that mob with every part of me but lets not give them any room to besmirch us for our conduct. In saying that, there will probably be the usual shite about Jock Stein who helped supporters who were in a bad way at that match and all the other songs they sing week in week out, so they can’t take the moral high ground. Let’s just support the team and leave them to it.

The behaviour of our 700 fans in the bigotdome at this memory of the tragic 66 killed at Ibrox should be the least of anyone’s worry. Biggest tragedy was Rangers 1872 , not heeding official pleas to improve the exits . The fact that Rangers Insurance refused to cover any claims & the fact that Rangers Board were so worried that their own supporters would claim for deaths of 66 & injury to hundreds more no minute’s silence or any commemoration was held for almost 20 yrs

So right. That club were let off the hook as usual by the media and all the legal stuff drifted silently into oblivion. For 20 years there was practically no public or annual recognition of the deaths, merely personal memories of those who were there. I would love to know what instigated the minutes silence after such a long gap. I am not convinced it was respect. Remember the last minutes notice a few years back. One just might suspect there was an ulterior motive.

By the way, I had personal knowledge of how much Celtic staff, including Jock and Sean, contributed to saving lives that afternoon. I do not expect the bulk of them to ever consider that when they spew their vitriol.

There is no “Old Firm” there is no “Rangers” But Celtic are locked and loaded and Ready to go. Once upon a time in the distant past, we were unsure if we could beat them, usually because of them being MIB handed, but big Jock brought in the right players and instilled in them a feeling of great confidence. Brendan Rodgers has that same quality, perhaps he studied big Jock (if you know your history), but let the ashes of the dead club, fear us, because they certainly do, fear us. So we play on that fear and we SHALL overcome the shattered remains of the bigots.

Good evening bhoys and ghirls I hope your Christmas was blessed with family around you and you all had a great time.
Tomorrow the Bhoys must be intelligent. They must not get caught up in what they will bring, blood and thunder. The authorities have thrown all they have into this game the fix has been placed.
They can’t do anymore they have pinned all their hopes on decisions going the way of sevco.
Keep the head Celtic, play the Celtic way and victory will be ours.
If Tierney doesn’t make it I would play Hayes as the left back thought he was excellent when he came on for Izzy.
But whoever Brendan chooses just don’t give them cheating hun orange bastards the chance to award anything. Their whistles will be at the ready.

Really happy to see your comment Jimmybee as I’ve been wondering how you are as you’ve been kinda posted missing! 🙂
I don’t agree about Izzy but that’s immaterial; your well-being and input here are far more important than little disagreements about who plays, et cetera.

On another note, it occurred to me that Collum making a cunt of himself with awarding TWO pens wrongly against us and missing fouls on Benkovic/Gordon at their 3rd may not be all bad. We got the 3 points we wanted and the eyes of the world will be on the game later today; now IF ONLY we had a CEO who would SUPPORT our team as we do and call out incompetence/cheating then they’d have nowhere to hide in front of a world-wide audience. But Lawwell only supports himself……CUNT.
BTW, in conversation prior to K/O against the Sheep I stated that we were as likely to be talking about Collum after the game as ABOUT the game. He didn’t let me down nor surprise me. But just to be clear, I DO NOT accuse him of cheating, just incompetence and I think he’s the worst of all of them.
All the Best for the New Year to one and all and, if we’re not intimidated by the poisoned atmosphere today, I fully expect us to start the New Year 6 points clear with a game in hand. COME ON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN.

New season. New manager. The numbers show a nice bounce as conversion rates for The Rangers and opponents were favourable. But probably not sustainable.

http://celticbynumberscom.ipage.com/tough-selection-choices-how-the-numbers-help/

Injury, internationals and form vagaries. It isn’t a straightforward selection choice for The Rangers derby. But the numbers help make sense of it all.

Uralius

Aw FFS Charlie. Why? Why would we play a formation that hasn’t worked all fucking season. If we need an Xtra man Broony can just play his usual defensive midfielder(not a wee CB honest) role. This formation is garbage, it’s from the 70s and was designed for the Libero role. It’s not required anymore. We have Half-Backs and anchorman. It only worked for MON for a while and he eventually conceded and started playing 4 at the back. Phew, kept that bottle up way too long.

Uralius
Reply to  Uralius

So you say we need strength in midfield because Rangers are playing long? I’m glad you pointed out the real flaw with this formation yourself: the overloading of the wide areas. We lost almost all of our goals in that way in the Europa League. All Stevie G has to do to flock up that formation is sit his possibly 2 strikers between the CBs overload the wide areas and have 2 midfielders make attacking runs.
