Celtic Diary Sunday December 23: Celts Start to Pull Ahead

Celtic swept to a 3-0 win over a lacklustre Dundee to put a wee bit of daylight between the club and second placed Aberdeen.

Its taken until Christmas, but the league table now has a more familiar look about it, and we can now look ahead to a St Stephens Day cracker up at Pittodrie between the leagues two best teams.

The next two fixtures, Aberdeen and “rangers ” won’t be easy, as one side has finally found its form and also a goalscorer in Sam Cosgrove, a great lump of enthusiasm that has now scored six in four games, and the other team ?

Well, for them it will be the defining moment of the season.

It could see the end of the current management team, should they fail to improve on recent drubbings at Ibrox from the team they love the most.

I listened to yesterdays game on the radio, and perhaps the most bizarre comment from comedy commentating team Liam MacLoed and Pat Bonnar was that Brendan Rodgers might well leave his big players out at Pittodrie to focus on the big game next weekend.

Clearly reality is something that is given little encouragement in the BBC Scotland radio studios…

Mikey Johnstone. Three goals in two games after he stepped in to cover for Oddsone Edoaurd and Leigh Griffiths.

As I said, listening to it on the radio I won’t pretend there wasn’t a hint of nostalgia hearing that Johnstone had scored for Celtic. That Johnstone was quick, and skilful, and had won the man of the match award…

Just when the media were rubbing their hands at the prospect of a strikerless Celtic going into two crucial away matches, the manager simply popped along to the factory shop and ordered one we’d made ourselves…

Another one that we’ve made oursleves is full back Tony Ralston, who looked to have blown his chance a while ago when he laughed at little Brazilian shit Neymar, which may have been hilarious, but Neymar had kind of wn the battle on the pitch, leaving Ralston looking a little foolish.

However, with Mikael Lustig injured and Christian Gamboa useless, a right back is needed, and Ralston has been offered first dibs on the position.

He’s grabbed it with both hands, and may well make the position his own, if he continues to perform as he has in the last two games.

Like Johnstone, all he has to do is listen, learn and put in a shift when asked.

The presence of Tierney, MacGregor and Forrest as first team regulars in the squad is a massive incentive to those coming through that they , too, will be given opportunities, and that they, too, will be judged purely on merit.

An all Scottish team succeeding in Europe again ? Don’t bet against it…

Well, if we can find a couple of centre halves at Lennoxtown, that is…

As it stands, though, there was perhaps more to the managers post match comments, who, as we know, prefers to develop a player rather than buy one..

“It was probably one of the most enjoyable games I’ve been involved in in the two-and-a-half-years that I’ve been here,”

“At this time of year sometimes the team can be a bit leggy and the intensity hasn’t been quite to the level that we would have wanted.

“I really enjoyed watching us today. We kept the pitch nice and tight and pressed the game in numbers. I thought we were really fresh and dynamic in how we won the ball. Dundee have shown they have some good players who can give you a problem.

“We really stopped them playing and were good in our defensive organisation to press the game. That allowed us to play in their half for large parts of the game. When we were in there, I thought some of our combinations, the speed and movement was excellent. The only downside was that we only got three goals.”

Efforts to convince the Australians to allow Tom Rogic to play at Ibrox on the 29th continue, despite it looking like a bit of a lost cause…

Replying to

I’ve contacted the socceroos and the Prime Minister of Australia in both English and Australian asking for him to be made available.

At the time of writing, we are unaware of any response..

Then there’s one of lifes great mysteries which I can offer an answer to…

J Retweeted Briandamage

Dearie me. Mikey Johnston up front ? 😩

and this guy gave never been seen in the same room😂

Oh come on….Even I’m not that miserable.

Well, not always.

Another mystery may well have been cleared up via the medium of twitter.

Likeable defender Erik Sviatchenko has been over for a visit, and while he is here he’s been pondering in the paper as to why Brendan Rodgers let him go.

Most of us are aware that it was simply that Erik is not Brendans type of player, but there may also be a clue in the tweet the big fellow sent out that perhaps hints at an issue with diet…

Holidays are coming…  and thats a time to remember those friends and companions who are no longer with us.

Over the next couple of days, if I can be arsed, I’ll remind you of some great Celtic fans who are no longer with us, such as Mags, from Grantham…

Older fans may remember she went on to live the dream when she presented the Scottish Cup to her hero, Roy Aitken..a man who had adorned her bedroom walls throughout her adult life…

only to be replaced by a new hero, who she once said “got her all tingly ” when she met Pat Bonner… who hinslef appears to have gone a bit gooey..

Of course, none of these pictures show her as I want to remember her…

This one does.

Scottish football has a certain charm around it, despite the actions of those who run it to turn it into a sort of mini English league in the hope that tv companies will plough money into it.

And at Spartans yesterday, we saw why we love it, even if they might not agree…

A break in play as the Referee asks that a jobby is shovelled off the pitch.

Meanwhile, a new face has appeared with his own, er, opinions on Scottish football.

Derek Clark does a bit for Talkshite Radio, amongst other, er, outlets, and has been sharing his insights with the world of twitter..

No Steven Davis in the Southampton squad

Presumably this is his way of telling us that Steven Davis is on his way to join the select band of brothers at ibrox who have played for both the pre liquidation and post liquidation entities.

Of course, he could be left out of the Southampton squad because he’s not good enough, but that doesn;t seem to be what he’s saying.

And when Clark speaks, the world sits up and takes notice.

Here he is talking about Jean Alain Boumsong…

Derek Clark Retweeted Superb Footy Pics

For six months he was one of, if not thee best defender Scottish football has ever seen

Talkshite is struggling for listeners again, which is usually when one of their lot decides to say something stupid to get a response.

Its just his turn this time.

He’s not the worst, Sky sports News managed to find a pundit who thinks Aberdeen won the League Cup…I can’t find a link, so if anyone can add it to the replies, I’d be grateful.

Hey, this sounds like a plan…

Ralph, not a criticism as I’ve far too much respect for you but “Celtic swept to a 3-0 win over a lacklustre Dundee to put a wee bit of daylight between the club and second placed Aberdeen.” doesn’t portray what REALLY happened yesterday in Paradise, IMHO. It wasn’t that Dundee were “lacklustre” it was that, even a slightly mis-firing Celtic, were just too fucking good and ran all over them.
Anyway, thanks to all at eTims for ALL that you do; some take it for granted, but not me.

Dundee are adrift and unless the takeover ploughs players in soon they will get relegated. Keeper didn’t make any great saves but we hit four straight at him. Sorry to be negative but I don’t think Tony Ralston will be good enough for Europe. Of course I hope he can be but I still think he is a bit heavy and not as fast as needed against quick players. Gamboa is lightening but less of a defender whist Izzy is just Izzy. When things are rosy we tend to allow this but who knows, injuries ( still to face Airdrie!) could see some of our back up face Valencia where, with the second leg away, full strength is vital. Who to buy, who to buy ?

I see rumblings or nonsense in the press about Celtic being interested in Andy Caroll and Jerman Defoe. FFS I hope That we avoid signing these types of player who are past their best and would take up a spot on the team keeping a young Celt out. Even if Griffiths comes back, we’ve got a long not short term vacancy that’s been the case since Dembele left.

Carroll and Defoe are also injury prone and would cost £50-100Kpw so we shouldn’t go near them with a barge pole.

BBJ was only on in his mid 20s and single-handedly almost kept Coventry from relegation ie he was fit and in superb goalscoring form.

Defoe’s a hasbeen and I’m not sure Carroll has ever had a sustained period of fitness.

We need a quality permanent addition who can rival Eddy for top striker.

Does it matter though, when the Baw is Burst, Ebeneezer (Lawwell) Scrooge, sits growing mushrooms in the basement of the board room, hiding the dodgy dossier of Res.12. Dodgy to the lies and the liars that is, as Bob (hello Bob) Cratchit and Tiny (Auldheid) Tim, pushes at the door for honesty, openness, transparency, with a modicum of accountability.
The Baw is Burst, say’s Tiny Tim, can it ever be repaired, oh yes! he say’s. Get in touch with “The Spirit in the Sky” the London polis and send them the dodgy dossier and fuck the consequences. “Let them eat Cake” say’s Marie Antoinette and make it a Christmas Pudding, I like the sound of that. Mike, on the subject of sending file to the City of London police do you think they would balk at getting involved if the SFA were to state that there is an investigation still underway? Wondering if it would have to be a “cold” or inactive case before they would begin their investigation? Perhaps you, or Auldheid, know the answer to this question I confess I haven’t researched this yet in any way so maybe there is a way for them to be involved alongside an ongoing action. I had been thinking about this as SFA are so good at stalling proceedings/kicking into long grass. I realise that patience is an integral part of the “persistence” motto so this might not matter but just something that occured to me!
Great to be top of the league for Christmas innit? Please Celtic get maximum points from games remaining this year and kick on from there to leave the rest in the dust!
Pleased to see more of our boys coming through, must own to a wee soft spot for Tony Ralston since the night he laughed in the face of that wee rat Neymar! Hope he can push on from here and make right back position as secure as the left – all hail our young lions 🙂 <3

Christina, You must have been in the recovery position since thon elasticated post, my wee mate cherlie had to get new glessess 😉
It was brilliant BTW. Here’s the thing about the City of London police, we would never know until we tried, or alternatively requested their advice. But the mister man (Ralph Malph) would offer a more informed opinion on such a course of action, him and Auldheid are the conjoined twins of Res.12. So I am not really qualified to offer such an opinion, I see it as my duty to keep on prodding his arse, less he forgets. So I don’t want to stand on anyone’s toes, but (there’s always a but) contacting them must be an option, perhaps after other alternatives have been explored. They are the miners, digging, digging away until they reach, whatever they find, either the mother load or SFA. But one thing that I do know is that they will not give it up. Oh yes, very pleased about the comers throuers, cos, all we are saying, is give youth a chance. Always had a soft spot for Antony, I like my defenders to have a bit of steel, bit like masell (hip joint) only kidding, Your smiley face with the puff, looks a tad like Monti, running up the stairs. So you post any way you want too, they will all be enjoyed by everyone on here, sharing knowledge can never be a bad thing and your Phooaarrr passion shone through. That too is a subject Res.12 that I am very interested in, we are lucky to have such intelligent bhoy’s leading the way, but there are other avenues to explore and your input would greatly enrich the debate. My only concern about your posts is that because of their length they may not come through and that you might become frustrated by that and become disillusioned. So please add your thoughts to the debate, it is an interesting and a worthwhile subject. Have a great Christmas and a fantastic and successful New Year. Pax Vobiscum. ;-)<3

They say a week is a long time in Politics. The same can said of football. Sinners can become heroes and vice versa in one or two weeks. Sinclair a sinner against Hibs but a hero vs Dundee. Ralston forgotten one week, a hero the next. You need a particular type of personality to sustain yourself in professional sports.

I was very disappointed to lose Patrick Roberts but now I think signing him would hinder the progress of Henderson and Johnson. I hope that we do not have plans to do so.

This is the most closed mouthed transfer window that I have seen. Either something big is happening, or nothing at all!

Rebus, I too would love to see Patrick Roberts back at Celtic, would it have a detrimental effect on young Henderson or Mikey? not sure that it would hold back both players development TBH. Football is fickle or more likely football supporters are fickle. It takes a knowledge of the game and the patience of a saint to fully appreciate the complexities of football development. I was reading Scott Gemmell’s appraisal of the 19 year old Mikey, Scott is the under 21 Scotland coach and he said this… They have been waiting for Mikey’s physical development to catch up with his undeniable footballing techniques. When you look at some of the young players coming through their physical dimensions have bulked up and they are more confident because of this. Anthony Ralston was IMO always a good defender he reminds me a wee bit of Danny McGrain, but has he got Danny’s skill? not yet, but he will make it I am certain, I hope he does it at Celtic. Brendan sounds confident about this window but some of the recent players brought in have failed the litmus test of Celtic players. As my auld tutors said, bright enough but needs to do better…

BJF

Pleased with Odsonne’s signing but I would like an experienced striker during the window and when Griff returns we have 3. We need to think about and plan for the Champion League qualifiers now and not in June, get then bedded in. If Ralston is the business, and he seems he might be, then he can provide Lustig cover so back to the usual one of a pacey centre half to replace Boyata when he goes.

Mike and Everyone,

Let me wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. For me, this time of the year stirs a lot of emotions…some sad but most very positive. Each new season, I become more sickened by the creeping commercialism that has taken over this time of the year. I know I am part of it but to get out requires risking disappointing people that I care about.A very special greeting for Ralph who gives us a chance to connect.

To get back to football, I know the modern game requires them but we seem to be acquiring a lot of wide players…..somebody needs to do the work in the middle. Let’s hope that Santa has a good striker on his sled.To me Edouard is not a leading striker, he plays either from the left wing or behind a main striker. In addition have Sinclair, Forrest, Johnson, Henderson, Hayes who are best at playing wide.

I see a debate on another blog contrasting Mikey and Morelos. They are two completely different types of player. I sincerely hope that we do not continue to play Johnson as a striker. He did well but his development will be hindered if he is played there over a long period.

Rebus,
Strikers have changed.Shearer, big hit men front men have their place and time but Brendan, like others, Klopp, Man.Utd without Lukaku etc. have sussed that central playing strikers can be a cliche, take up space and can be marked easily. Dembele at Lyon is also testament althogh in Scotland this can work.Yesterday I thought MJ a mistake early on, biscuit tin and all that but there is evidence that mobile, hard to mark front men, even,or particularly, smaller strikers (Sallah, Vardy,Hazard,Pele, Rossi, Jamsie, M.J.)quick movement, inter play and thought can profit. If you take Celtic’s top scorers, only Mc Grory could be described as an out and out template for Roy of the Rovers.Thoughts ?

Stevie,

I know what you are saying but nowhere did I mention size. I do not think we currently have an out and out striker on the books. Let’s leave Griff out of the discussion until he is back with us. None of Forrest, Roberts, Sinclair, Morgan, Hayes, nor Christie are natural strikers irrespective of size. They can score but that is their secondary gift. The jury is out on Johnson and Henderson….maybe they will become Celtic’s answer to Aguerro or Vardy.

Let me make a point that supports both your argument on size and also my issue on lack of a natural striker. Johnson’s second goal yesterday….he is not tall but he attacked the ball. That is unusual for us! Edouard does not do this as you would expect from a man of his physique. How many times have you seen a cross come in and there is nobody there to jump for it? Similarly, you see wingers cuting the ball back towards the penalty area because they know there is nobody in the middle to attack a cross. It is a weakness that we have and it impacts the variety of our attacks.

Henke, The best striker we have had for many, many years, probably one of the best striker’s of his generation, not physically imposing, even when he played against much larger centre-backs, he just had a strength of mind allied to his undoubted talents. Proving once again that size doesn’t matter, when talent prevails. Although he was a brilliant finisher, he was also helped when he played alongside a bigger secondary striker. I so looked forward at the start of this season when Odsonne played up front with Dembelle, what a brilliant pairing they were and we just had but a fleeting glimpse of what could’ve should’ve been..

Chris Sutton was masterful as a holding the ball up striker, tall, strong physicality & enjoyed the physical tussle, this is the type we need….lead from the front.

Albertz, Gazza, Numan, deBoer … these players were far outwith our class which is why we needed tax avoidance to attract them!

“Rangers class” is a paradox wrapped in an enigma – I will take this squad any day over some of the teams in recent memory.

A few tweaks and we will be right up there.

There is a really good piece comparing Odsonne and Dembele on Celtic by numbers and has been said by Rebus Eddy doesn’t attack the six yard box the way a natural striker does. Wee Mikey is very skillful and attacks the ball. If we had just bought Mikey for 4 million we would all be raving about him. Agreed?
Are there any Joe McBrides’ or Jimmy McGrorys’ in football anymore? I haven’t seen any for quite a while. Bobby Lennox is our second top scorer and he started as a winger. The way the game has gone it is about speed and skill and getting into the box. Jack Aitchison is the closest we have to a center forward we have on the books who is playing just now and is not getting even a place on the subs bench and he is no Joe McBride. Aitchison is a natural goalscorer though and I believe should be given a chance. Whether BR will play him or not is another question and one that will be answered with time. To put him down because he plays for the reserves is nonsense as Mikey too was playing for the reserves only a couple of weeks ago and most of you guys were not mentioning him. Ralston is quick and good enough for Europe and only lost Neymar (gave him a 15 yard start) because he made a supporting run attacking PSG to support Griffs and Sincs who then coughed the ball up leaving Ralston out of position. The youngsters we have (including Henderson who is a number 10 type) should be given a real run out in the team and given a chance. The modern game is about speed and skill and these players have it.
I believe we are heading in the right direction as a team and BR is doing a great job. It would be a travesty to let Ewan Henderson go in the summer as he is outstanding.

The Andy Carroll type centre forward is for the past, the old maxim is still true, if you are good enough then shape or size or age is immaterial. Talent is the criteria that we judge players on. Oddsone is the present and the future, tall yet with talented feet and unbelievably only twenty years old, he is the future. I’m more than happy for Brendan to pick out the players we need to add to the first team squad. I think that this squad of players is the best we have seen at Celtic for years, they will only get better and we will be the winners. In Brendan we trust…

Mike,
I’m not talking about a big guy up front to lump high balls up to, i’m talking about someone with physical attributes who can hold up the ball against rough central defenders.
Dembele could do it to great effect, Edouard is different to Dembele although in his own right will be a great striker in time.
Mark Hughes was one of the best strikers i watched in his Man utd days, taking the ball into feet & not being pushed around.
Gary Hooper was another player that could hold the ball up well

Monti,

I agree with hat, if we can get another YOUNG big striker to help Odsonne then I would be delighted with that.

Viduka was the best I’ve seen at doing that
