Celtic Diary Wednesday December 12: Happy Manager Means A Happy Team

Brendan Rodgers says he’s happy at Celtic. So happy, in fact, that he’s not even thinking about money anymore, but only about doing his job.

The biggest thing you can have is happiness.

“I mean that in a real way because stability in football is very, very difficult.

For me, being here doesn’t make me any less ambitious. It is what makes me happy as a coach and a manager.

“For me, that is about developing players and winning matches in the preferred way in which I work.

“I could leave Celtic and maybe double or treble my wages by going elsewhere but it wouldn’t guarantee me happiness.

“If you are happy at your work and have good energy then hopefully you are going to be successful.

“For me, that place is here at Celtic.”

When he’s happy, he’s happy, and thats why fewer players than you would expect have left Celtic over the years.

One, Moussa Dembele, kicks himself every day for not waiting to see how a little spat upstairs turned out before hoofing his toys out of the pram.

With the crucial, and difficult , final match in the Europa League group stage tomorrow night, the manager seemed calm in an interview for Dafabet, who sponsor the shirts, which in turn will filter down to the players.

He faces a bit of a dilemma in who to start in midfield, but his manner suggests he’s already made his choice, and he’s happy with it.

More importantly, it looks like the players are happy with it as well.

The most important decision surrounds the midfield, as the personnel within will dictate the style of play.

Does he keep MacGregor in the playmaker role, supported by Christie and Rogic, who himself has a telepathic understanding with potential match winner James Forrest, or does he elct to place Scott Brown alongside MacGregor, to try and bore the Austrian side into submission ?

Current form suggests the former, and its worth remembering that without Brown Celtic turned in probably their best  away , in Trondheim, showing that they can be mature and professional.

Even though only a draw is required, one expects Celtic to try to get a goal or two of a cushion, and perhaps at that point utilise Browns experience and ability to break down other teams moves.

Or we could go with my idea, which is just to boot the ball out of the ground every time we get it.

And if the Austrians do take the lead, switch the floodlights off and say they’re broken.

What is important, and cannot be underestimated as a weapon, for want of a better word, is that if Brendan has so many options, in style and in personnel, it will be difficult for the Salzburg manager to set his team out to counter Celtic, and so his players will not receive their instructions until the team is named.

Every little bit helps.

For instance, where were all the celtic minded policemen when the Austrian team bus parked in a no parking zone last night ?

Haul it away and don’t tell them where it is until Friday, forcing them to take taxis to the ground tomorrow night.

Every little helps.

Tell them the heating and hot water is broken in the away dressing room, and send a guy in -who speaks Austrian-to mend it while they are having their team talk.

Every little helps.

Oh, and the practice match balls ? Tell them you can’t find the key to the store cupboard as the guy who has it went to hospital with his wife, who is having twins, about an hour ago and he forgot to leave it.

Every little helps.

Alternatively, just score at least as many goals as they do. That would work as well, I suppose.

Then theres the important stuff to consider, like the pre match tunes, which I would guess are probably not the same tunes most of us listen to pre match…

Brendan continues his relaxed interview…

I have to say that the music tastes of the boys is very good and Kieran is great for the likes of me and the staff, because he plays some old-school tunes.”

“He has been brought up with his Mum and Dad’s song, so that’s great for me. He’s really good and he takes the responsibility seriously.

“He’s very good at it and is committed to it as well, with what he brings to put the music on.

“It’s a great ambience in the dressing room.

Hang on, Tierney never played on Saturday, and Celtic put in the performance of the season so far !

Image result for shocked baby face

Here we are wondering if its Brown or MacGregor to start, when in fact the crucial decision lies around who gets to pick the tunes.

The internet was alive last night with rumours that head of scouting Lee Congerton had left/been sacked/mutually consented. There’s been no word from the club, as no one actually knew he was still working there, so its been difficult to establish what has actually happened.

But if the man who brought us Marvin Comperr has been asked to leave, few tears will be shed, except by agents who have a plethora of injured players on their books.

Davie Hay, who has been rather nice about Peter Lawwell of late, used to be able to spot a player or two. We have a ready made replacement if he’s still got that knack.

Scott Brown will find out today-or tomorrow, because of the time difference, whether or not Western Melbourne, the Australian club who have offered him the chance to move down under, will be granted a licence to play in the Australian  top league.

The other clubs will vote on the new clubs status after the original club went into liquidation when it was found they had opened a tax free haven….oh wait, that was another club who wanted to sign Brown…

Tomorrow, of course, we’ll hear that Brown is looking at his options, Calum Macgregor is wanted by southampton/Bournemouth/Melchester Rovers and James Forrest isn’t good enough for the EPL, so today we’re going to look at a few headlines about new players allegedly on the radar of whoever is in charge of that sort of thing at Celtic..

Celtic should move for Leicester City striker Islam Slimani in January

the striker already has a CSC named after him, according to some of the more virulent followers of William..

Benkovic delighted to be staying at Celtic

Not permanently, not yet anyway, but at least until the medals are handed out, and the more he enjoys it, the greater the chance of him staying are…even if its another loan.

Man United want Tavernier

No, not that one. Even they haven’t fallen that far yet. Its his brother, apparently, who is even better than the blue Cafu.

Dembele Wants to Come Back. Frenchman Homesick In France. Says He’s Sorry For His Tantrum

Okay, I made that one up

Meanwhile, as we discussed on the podcast, which is elsewhere on the site, business is so good over at the new “rangers ” shop, which mysteriously doesn’t use that word in the title, that they’re cutting opening hours to keep up with demand..

In order to keep up with demand and to benefit the fans we will be operating on reduced hours in store for the rest of the week, 11am-4pm. We will update you as soon as we are fully operational again, apologies for any inconvenience.

Silly sods. No wonder their club went under, running a successful business isn’t their speciality.

Yesterday we had this picture to peruse..

Davie Hay? Gonnae, jis naw.

He’s been out of football so long, presumably because he’s got nothing to offer anyone in the modern game.

What next, bring back Lou Macari, another of the QSG, who couldn’t wait to leave for “better” but when no one else wants them, they’re happy to come over all Celtic Minded for another pay day.

The Movers and the Shakers of Res.12.

The move alongers, Who are they, Who are they, well go into any Celtic blog that mentions Res.12 and you get the interlopers that want us to forget about the cheating. “Move along Timmy and Gies piece”. Yeah that’s what they want, they still are restless at the thought of it being acted on, Rodger Mitchell, “I don’t want to be in the SPFL without the O.F”. Well gauwn yerself Rodger and say goodbye.

The Rock in Roll, Shakers, These are De men who fight for sporting integrity, as clean a game as we can muster. Of course we wish for more, like clarity on LNS, an SFA fit for purpose and answerable to us all. A club whose board that values, honesty, transparency, sporting integrity. Its not a lot to ask for, it should be a given, we might just get it, if we are prepared to fight for it, bring on the leaders, the Spartans of football’s Sporting Integrity. Oh and gies a win the morra Santa, you know you also want that…

A big month but May and, hopefully, a Treble Treble will be bigger.

He’s simply not fit enough to play a part at the moment and I was resigned to not seeing him to next year anywhere.

We’ve got goals in Jamsie, Calumn, Ryan, Tam and hopefully Sinky so its not as if we’re down to Scott Brown to score the goals.

Ronaldo is facing serious rape allegations in the US and both him and Messi pulled a Dave King to avoid jail for tax evasion.

the green brigade got it correct with that banner a few years go about being a celtic player on and off the park

this could be extremely detrimental for our season, he has to go, I suspect we are doing our legal duty with an employee who has issues but id be surprised if he is still here in the summer

Geez ohh A guy who has issues should be thrown under a bus eh? C’mon guys.
Yes he’s paid good money but when you have addiction problems or mental health problems then let’s help and try and sort it out. If we can do that we have a player if not at least we tried.

I am of the opinion that he has had more than one chance at Celtic, and if it is down to gambling then I have no time for it.

If I am wrong and he has an mental illness or such then I am big enough to hold my hands up to it.

I am not and never have been a big fan of Leigh Griffiths, but when he stepped over the white line and onto the pitch, that changed and he got my full support. You have to put it into context, it could be any Celtic player, in fact the same addiction blighted John Hartson among very many players, its not a new thing, its being going on for decades, players with too much money and plenty of time on their hands. The lad needs support, every kind of support he can get. Think if it was your family or friend, you would support him in every way that you could. So, we give him our full support… and hope that he can fight and beat his demons, its in all our interests that he succeeds.

For me, whatever the player is or isn’t off the field, I would share your disgust, however no matter who or why or what he is, when he steps onto the pitch wearing our colours then I will give him 100% support. It is in our clubs best interest to give Leigh as much help and support that we can, we cannot and must not do anything other than that, that is my view.

I’m disappointed with Leigh Griffiths, he needs help & he will get that help but there needs to be an understanding that the club needs to be protected.
Too many issues with this guy, it’s now hurting the team & the club, he needs to be shown the door.

Celtic make a statement about the mental welfare of one our players and its descended into this.
FFS get a grip everyone.
If we like Griff if we don’t doesnt matter.
The guy needs and has asked for help. Should he have done it earlier if what is said to be true by bgbhoy then most definitely. But it wasn’t and sometimes the person can seem fine train well but next day cant get his head out the bed. Whatever has brought this to a head then I’m glad it has.
For Leighs health and well being as much as protecting the club
Our clubs name has been tarnished enough recently,so it’s good we have been pro active in this instant.
I don’t know the ins and outs i just know a guy wether you like him or not has asked for help, maybe by doing this he will come out the other side a better and healthier person lets hope so.

Jimmy nobody here doesn’t want him to get better. My point and OPINION is that this is more than his first misdemeanours. As Monti says he has far too much baggage. Most players these days have one outburst in the media of negative behaviour. E.g cal macs drink driving. Brownies drink before the final etc. But this guy has had several. From racism to gambling etc. If he is mentally ill then it’s a shame. And he needs help. But if it’s the gambling and I’m more than convinced it is I find it wholly unacceptable that our only other striker has to take time off work to resolve. I think we have to show him the door

Charlie Saiz,
I’ll stop you there Rambo.
Don’t talk about respect when you have called fellow posters ” Fucking clowns ” & all sorts of other shite.
Remember your wee outbursts as well the next time you go running to Ralph about big bad Monti.

You need to calm dwn & apologise to Bgbhoy & Henke.

Glory hunting? I’ve been going to the football since packer bonners testimonial. I was 10 before I remember Celtic winning the league in 98. Didn’t stop me going as much as my dad could take me. Didn’t stop me wanting to go either. Trips to Europe getting pumped 4-0 7-1 etc, doesn’t stop me singing or spending what I can every season. What about you?

The usual rational response from yourself JBee.
I work in this field and LG needs support not people slating him and taking the piss.

Seems like Griffiths has some kind of addiction. Like any other addiction it can be cured if he gets support and help. It may take a while it may be quick, maybe even quicker than a broken leg. Whether someone earns a lot or a little is immaterial to an addiction. Sympathy and help is the civilized response to addiction in my view and I hope the club helps him through to be productive and a prolific striker again soon. To simply discard him like rubbish is hard to understand and to be holier than thou about it is plain ugly.

We ALL want Leigh to be fine but Celtic come first mate, we aren’t arguing that, he needs help & he’ll get it.
I think we as a support are disappointed & frustrated with this but we want the guy to be fine.

In the fucing meantime we have football matches to win & need all hands at the pump, i will repeat again for those not listening CELTIC CANNOT RELY ON LEIGH GRIFFITHS, whether it’s down to illness, addiction or injury.

We need to buy big in January on a striker we CAN depend on!

Yes Monti Celtic need to get some cover in to make sure we have enough striker options. We have plenty of cash thankfully to be able to do that and help a man who is ill to get better. I applaud Brendan and the club for helping him. I hope he gets better comes back and pays back big in terms of plenty of goals. That’s all I’m saying treat the guy with some sympathy, empathy and do the right thing by him. Also get cover in to help us win games.

Luckily that’s exactly what Celtic are going to do. The article on the fishal site is good on this.

Also, there’s no mention of gambling addiction, which could be true ala:

– Tierney to Everton
– Brendan leaving
– No tickets for Ibrox

Even, if it is, it’s of puerile interest for anyone other than Leigh, his family and friends and his employer.

Man, the responses on this site have gone to the (slavering) dogs. I still enjoy reading the diary (thanks eternally Ralph & Co) but stopped reading the replies donkeys ago due to the schoolboy nature of them. Seems as if feck all has changed. How sad, especially considering how well things are going on the park and a balance sheet level. Oh well, Hail Hail and here’s to another rip-roaring Euro night tomorrow.

Who would listen to the e-tim podcast when all the fun is on the diary, Christina, you need to get your xxxxx back on here, so that I can have an intelligent conversation. Strange thing about Leigh Griffiths is.. on the 14th of September, yes just short of three months ago, he signed a new 4 year contract. So we can all speculate to ejaculate, but it seems like his troubles have only recently intensified. Speaking about speculation, Susanna Reid has lost one and a half stones, I have lost half a stone, if anybody can find my half stone and Susanna’s one and a half stone, would they please put my half stone on top of hers. Cheers… Saltzburg you mean nothing to me Oh Vienna.

Sorry Mike – reporting in for duty!
-I had heard yesterday more details about Leigh and what was going on but didn’t want to post this as it wasn’t getting talked about. The news today about senior players phoning Brendan confirms what I’d heard that Leigh was in very bad way and a danger to himself (trying to be as discreet as possible here but I’m sure you understand what I’m saying) that is why swift and decisive action had to be taken yesterday. So please go easy on the comments guys the situation is darker than you know!

Christina, You were/are right to be discreet and good for you on being so. Sometimes I have heard things about older players, but I would never discuss them on an open forum. That’s the problem with blogs, some folk bare their souls and that’s not in their best interest. I fully understand what you mean and I’m glad that you posted discreetly over the page. There is a bhoy on here who is related to one of the currant Celtic first team players and he has let me know of Griffiths many different complexities. I do have sympathy for Leigh and I sincerely hope that he can overcome his demons. Nice to talk to you Christina and I hope things for you are good, take care…

Christ, I thought the knuckledraggers were bad, some of the faeces above is beyond a joke.
I do not justify the Queens Army, but having worked in schools I have seen how the establishment hit the poor catchment areas for recruits.
Young boys are recruited at fourteen by the Queens militia, frequently brain washed to serve the butchers Apron.
Griffiths to date has done well for Celric, it is now down to BR and the professionals to try to help him, if he does not accept that help, the club has to let him go.
In relation to Jamsie and the so called incident in Elliots, a story full of pish.
Try and look on the bright side life, another treble, and qualification for the next stage of the Europa.
