Celtic diary Thursday November 6: Its The Old Trouble Again Dear

Celtic drew 1-1 in motherwell last night, taking their impressive away form this season to another level .

Ryan Christie scored after thirteen minutes, Filip Benkovic had a goal chalked of, presumably because he wasn;t standing up straight when he volleyed into the net, and Leigh Griffiths missed a penalty when he forgot what end of the park he was at and passed it back to the goalkeeper.

There are a number of reasons why the Celtic machine stuttered last night, and a umber of other things that any observer would have spotted, and with just three wins out of eight on the road in the league, its simply not good enough.

Before we dissect the performance, lets consider the fact that the usually vocal away support and their choice of traditional Irish songs might not be as inspiring as was previously thought…

Before I offer my tuppence worth-which some may consider a little over priced at tuppence-lets see what the manager had to say. Thats always a pisser when he’s made an arse of it.

“It’s good for a manager to see – players will knock and ask about why they are not playing and I need to see a game like that,”

I suppose one does need to make mistakes in order to recognise when one is doing something right.

When you bring in full international players you’d expect it to be ok,”

“You can’t go through a season with 11 players. We have players out injured so yeah it was what we had to do.

“The result doesn’t change the fact were comfortable at 1-0 and we have to see it out.

“The last four or five minutes doesn’t change that.”

The manager made quite a few changes to the starting line up, the only one forced was the introduction of the never alert jozo Simunovic who replaced the injured Dedryck Boyata. Craig Gordon resumed his role on goal which was expected.

In came Olivier Ntcham, Scott Brown, Johnny Hayes and Leigh Griffiths.

None of those are regular full internationalists. Christian Gamboa is, but he plays for Costa Rica, which is more famous for the Jurassic Park movies than football.

It wasn’t about the last four or five minutes though, as the malaise set in after half time, when Scott Sinclair came on for Olivier Ntcham, to give the supporters something else to moan about.

Rodgers explained this move…

Ntcham change was tactical. We needed more – it was as simple as that.”

Sinclair was brought on to give us more. If only we knew exactly what it was he brings more of to the table.

The team weren’t comfortable. the style of play that had worked so well over the last few weeks had changed, and it was down to the re-introduction of Scott Brown.

Sidieways football returned, which is okay when you’re winning, but more importantly when Brown drops back to protect the defenders, there becomes a little bit of confusion in that back line and the old weakness in front of anyone who runs directly at the defence comes back into focus.

Motherwell took a while to spot it, but when they did, they had a couple of chances and a goal to show for it.

With Brown on the pitch the younger midfielders, MacGregor and Christie took his lead and abandoned their own natural game, which is to move the ball forward quickly, in favour of the patient , probing style that allows teams who have worked out how to play against that tactic to claw themselves back into the game.

There were a few disappointing individual performances, but none bad enough to demand that any players should never wear the jersey again.

Then again, Motherwell lost seven goals to “rangers ” a few weeks ago. We should not have drawn with them. simple as that.

However, looking at the big picture, all thats needed is to realise that what didn’t work earlier in the season isn’t going to work now.

The result may have overshadowed yet another piss poor performance by a referee, as the disallowed Benkovic goal seemed perfectly legal to me, and there is an argument that man in the middle Kevin Clancy got more than one other decision wrong during the game, but this cannot be used as an excuse for the result.

And anyway, Kevin Clancy put in a top class performance compared to a couple of others last night, with Andrew Dallas leading the way when he awarded St Johnstone a penalty when one of their players fell over in the box with no contact at all.

Still, Dallas can take heart that at least this time the incident was in the box, which is an improvement of sorts.

Over at Ibrox, Steven MacLean, who has no connection to the new club there, since it was the old one his brother played for sent an Aberdeen player, the dainty Sam Cosgrove, for an early bath after he picked up his second booking when Conor Goldson kicked him in the back of his boot.

To be fair, MacLean sent off Alfredo Morelas as well, presumably because sooner or later someone had to to make it look like the chaps at the SFA were embarrassed by the revelation that one of their referees thinks the Colombian is merely a bit silly sometimes, as opposed to the rest of us who thinks he’s a bit of a hothead with no respect for or even understanding of the rules.

Whilst Celtic , Aberdeen and “rangers ” were going about their business, Stevie Clarkes Kilmarnock were a little quieter with how they went about theirs, and as a result they have knocked “rangers off their perch at the top of the league…

Of course, with games in hand, the table isn’t exactly telling the truth, but if Celtic lose to Kilmarnock on Saturday, as they did earlier in the season at Rugby Park, then both teams will have earned exactly 78 points this year, 2018, which means that they, not Aberdeen or “rangers “, are in fact the serious challengers we’ve been waiting for.

Despite what you may read in the media.

Last night, if we take a nuetral stance, was an excellent night of football in Scotland. controversy, excitement, and probably even the goal of the season, with Adam Hamill of St Mirren from just inside the opponents half.

BBC Scotland, however, made us wait until the wee small hours before broadcasting  their highlights show, which meant that most of us would have missed it. to add insult to injury, the English games were on first, and that, in a nutshell, is why our kids and grandchildren will ask for the colours of Arsenal, Manchester United or whoever else is doing well down there just now.

Alright, we know that our clubs and their representatives undersell our game, but the least they could do is argue that in Scotland our game takes precedence over the English one.

It would be nice if just once, just once, someone in authority in the Scottish game would do something that is in the interests of the game, and not in the interests of their own pockets.

Yesterdays caption competition produced some quality replies again, and if you haven’t read all of them, go back and have another look.

Rodgers must accept all the blame for lasts night’s fuckup, why on gods earth did he start with Brown and Ntcham, and completely change the dynamics of a team that hadn’t conceded a goal since Browns injury, and was playing the best football of the last 12 months, we struggled twice last season to Motherwell, yet Rodgers thinks 7 changes would do the job this time, the only changes should have been the one’s forced on Rodgers through injury,Brown has been a fantastic servant for Celtic, but he’s coming to the end of his career now and should be used as a player to come of the bench and influence game’s, as for Sinclair, regardless of his goal in europe the guy is a busted flush, I’d rather see Hayes get a chance on the left wing, his natural position, and the position that used to torment us most meetings. I honestly thought we’d seen the end of Rodgers tinkering with the team and making an arse of it, but clearly not,and thanks to more dropped point’s away from home to wank team’s, Rodgers has created a title race for the SMSM…

Agree with Brendan when he said ” a number of his squad players can’t complain about not playing “.
It’s up to the players to train & be as fit & ready as they possibly can be, grasp their chance when they get a chance to play.
Some guys are saying we shouldn’t have made so many changes, but they need to understand the game more, some players will be fucked.
Guys like James Forrest & Kieran Tierney are being played too often in my opinion, i understand that these guys are pivotal to our success but they do need a rest.
There is a winter training camp in Dubai at the end of the month so it’ll give them a chance to rest up.
Ntcham at left side midfield surprised me last night,he’s a quality player but only in centre mid.
McGregor is another who needs a rest, these guys have been bursting a gut but you can only give so much until fatigue sets in.

Celtic need something different up front, we badly miss the physicality of Moussa Dembele, his hold up play & his goals.
We need another striker, Edouard & Griffiths are good strikers but we need another Dembele.

Scott Sinclair’s up & down performances are a big concern.
Scott, just get on the ball & fucking drive at the opposition defence…fuck sake!

Too many at Celtic who’s time is up, Gamboa, Compper, Simunovic, Boyata, Izaguirre, Hayes, Allan, Bitton.
Also the Craig Gordon comedy passing at the back is seriously unfucking funny now.

Two players i’d go for in January for the defence, Calum Paterson & Scott McKenna.

Work to do Celtic, we should be better placed than we are, fingers out!

Good to hear the Rebel songs being belted out again, keep singing bhoys, louder next time!

Yip, but when was it that Celtic never had a financial upper hand on all but one of the clubs in Scotland…… 7 out of 7 ….. never been done before. There will be ups and downs…..always…..a 1v1 draw away to Motherwell is a little disappointing, but after a European away win and a cup final win in 6 days and 7 changes to the starting line up….. lets see how we do on Saturday and how we add quality this transfer window.

Still angry about yesterdays performance, the spot the referee’s many faults was just another link to the “we have some shite players” and who was responsible for bringing them into the club. Seven changes, seven FFS. A ball is shot from inside our box and passes Gordon on the outside and he had only one save to make all game, like his appalling distribution another minus for me. Where do you start with Gamboa, or Hayes or Browns sideways shuffle, mind destroying. No wonder Ntcham got hooked. Referee aside there is another thing in play and that is how other clubs have brought in Hammer Throwers, players of limited ability who’s attributes include, over the top tackles, elbow’s raised jumps, sliding tackles, the push pull brand of football, intimidation is its purpose, add weak referees into the mix and you have a brand of football more suited to the fifth tier of English football. Football is a contact sport, but this brand of industrial football is awful. How to counter it, well you bring in big players, physical players, players who can play but are like Dembelle up front big players whop are hard to push off the ball. The very opposite of Gamboa. Too slow from the back giving opposing teams time to arrange defensively, we need to toughen up in the SPFL.

They are more prevalent now though, the economics of most SPFL clubs means that they are restricted in bringing in quality players. Development for some clubs is non existent, which means that their choice is restricted. Brawn replaces skill, exasperated by pish poor referees. You just have to look around the SPFL to see the lack of quality and the abundance of “Hammer Throwers” the highland games of Scottish fitba. “Scots Porridge Oats” but where is Jeannie, I dream of her nightly, while supping my porridge and fiddling inside my kilt

The reason for the sideways passing is that none of the forward players are making runs or finding space. McGregor used to be one of our best at it but, when he was moved when Brown came on, he was static. Hope his movement hasn’t been coached out of him by playing a ‘sitting’ role for a bit.

The best players are International players, but they play one hell of a number of games. C.L. or/and Europa league, then you add the thirty eight league games, the League and the Scottish cup games and if your team is successful you play in them to the finals. Your very best players are playing something like 70 games. Every successful team needs a big pool of first team players, so you can rotate and rest players up, but these squad players must be of quality, to keep successful runs going. When you rotate as many as seven players, there can be no fluidity in your teams performance and we witnessed that last night. Referee’s should be of a certain quality also, but I have yet to spot one in Scottish football, ours are quite the opposite and yet seem to be immune to criticism, that cannot be right, but its a closed shop, they cannot be questioned and that is wrong in every respect. I’m not a fan of Levein but he has the balls to stand up for his club and calls it as he sees it. But who stands up for Celtic, the lambs are silent, they whisper behind the board room walls, but their silence is deafening….

Imagine the state that we would be in with fans who own club arguing to get Boyata out last summer & also not allowing Dembele to leave & he huffing & causing problems every week .
Really fan ownership would be a complete disaster , the only fans interested would be pompous self seeking .

He’s no panic merchant, as the last 2 and a half years have shown.

The Salzburg game is the Biggie, so if the best preparation for this is to rest key players eg Tierney and McGregor on Saturday, then I’m sure he’ll do it.

Doing this will lessen our chances on Saturday but not the big picture.

Thought Ralph’s analysis was so good. My feeling is Brown should be used for the time being as a positive substitute Gambia should never be in the top flight and someone ( maybe Brendan ) should tell Gordon, who I really like, that he will be fined if he puts his team in trouble with his I’ll considered pass outs. You know it’s not the Celtic of late when you see Kieran often passing back, Sinclair was brilliant but below average now and a luxury we can’t afford. The swashbuckling team over past few months was missing even allowing for penalty miss and good goal chalked off. I,m certain Brendan must take blame for picking team that passes crossfield with no end product. We missed a golden opportunity last night and we must think everything will turn out alright. Hope Brendan doesn’t become too loyal our club is more important than individuals. The best way to defend is to attack the Celtic way here’s hoping we go this way on Saturday kill off Killies aspirations

Thoughts from the Lavvie.

I was concerned about last night’s game, my concern lessened when Murderwell lost three players fairly quickly, my concern related to the players brought in and seven team changes. Our record when we change so many players at one time means we a draw or a defeat. I thought young Christie played exceptionally well, AGAIN. Ntcham was shite once again and no physical presence. When Griffiths missed the penalty and Benko’s great goal was mysteriously ruled out, my fears increased, big time. Was Brendan right to alter the team? disny matter now, but their are two big games on the near horizon and he is well paid to make the right calls. The Celtic Star writer said that Gamboa had a great game and made Hayes MOM. which goes to prove that some writers know SFA about football. Time to check on the wooly wonders……

I was a wee bit concerned about last night myself, the Celtic players have given a lot lately & they must be fatigued to a degree, it’s not something i used to believe but it’s true, we are in a good position but we all want to break clear in the league & we will.
These squad players have a fucking cheek chapoing the managers door & asking to play, then put in substandard performances.
I’m losing patience with Scott Sinclair, he isn’t doing the fucking business now, why is this?
Confidence? Pish.

Monti,

Brendan s right, we cannot rely all the time on eleven players, it is imperative that we have quality back up. You know I thought that Ralston is a better right back than Gamboa, I also thought that we could have done with Bitton to stiffen up the defence. Och its easy to criticise, I just think it show’s that our first team pool of players needs an overhaul. We shouldn’t be dropping points to Hammer Throwers like Motherwell, with our budget we should sweep teams like that aside. But I read today about Klopp’s anger at the oppositions agriculture tackles, what is the point of bringing in technical players for them to be kicked off the park…

Jimmy,

You are spot on. Motherwell are not a threat, nor will Killie be long term. Aberdeen and Sevco are the dangers. We have already shown that we can master both of them. Occasionally a tef may influence a result against them but over the season we shall be too strong, especially if we strengthen in January.

The team is facing a number of issues that need resolution. Firstly, is the style of play, i.e. Brown or No Brown. Secondly, we are short of a big predatory striker that can head the ball. Thirdly, we ate a victim of our success in the number of games that we play. The first two can be resolved by the club but the third will throw up performances like last night.

There is another potential weakness and that is the CB situation but at the moment that is fixed. It is noteworthy that the Well goal came from the wing, not through the centre.

Rebus

BJF

Jimmybee as ever spot on. No fun last night and with the penalty and Benkovic’s goal we should have had the 3 points, it means Saturday against Kille is another cup final type game. I understand the need to rest players, pleased Forrest was rested, McGregor and Tierney need a break as well but this cannot happen easily before the Ipox game.

Brendan signed players to give us other options, but those options don’t pan out in our current situation. When Rogic is on the park we missed Moussa less because Rogic becomes the physically strong focal point allowing the players around him to play thier natural game. When Wee Mac is playing deep we have a Playmaker who can spray the ball around, quick switches pulling the defense everywhere etc. We don’t get the same from Brown.
In a nutshell this is how Celtic have portfolio best.

…………Goalie…………
IFB…. BPD……… BCD… AWB

…… DPM……… B2B…….

RRW……….TAM……..IFW…
………… RFW………….

IFB – Inverted Fullback looks to cut in unless winger in front already has drifted in.
BPD – Plays with head up and has good distribution.
BCD – Ball Carrying Defender happy to dribble out of defense when there is space.
DPM – Deep lying Play Maker. Great distribution starts many moves by switching play and cutting through balls
B2B – Box to Box midfielder, does it all and often arrives from deep into the box Stuart Armstrong and Ryan Christie
RRM – Roaming Right Winger has ability to find the byline, but can often be found in pockets of space and attacking the channels.
Target Attacking Mid – Plays attacking mid, but holds up ball and uses his strength like a target man.
Inside Forward – Cuts in so much that when he goes to the byline the whole country is caught out of position.
RFW – Roaming Forward, floats around and seldom seems to be where he should be.

We need another version of all of these players because we only have 1. Another Rogic, Lustig and Ball Playing defender should be top of the list.

Nah it hasn’t been a 433, it’s been a 4231. I agree there was imbalance in the team, but that’s because players with certain qualities are replaced by players with completely different qualities. Ayer has more in common with Rogic than Christie does. The team performs completely different without the correct blend of players. Take the set up I posted with the right personnel he could make 7 changes, but the backup RB is an attacking wing – back not an inverted Wing back, the backup attacking wide player he used on the right is not a roaming Winger (Raumdeteur) as you correctly mentioned he is an aggressive left winger. The “replacement” for our Deep Lying Playmaker is a Half Back and the rest of midfield got shuffled as a result. Ntcham is 1 footed. Some of our midfielders are interchangeable, but we need another Rogic because we can’t replace him and we need that presence behind these not Moussa Dembele Strikers.

My top current Celtic players :

Kieran Tierney. This guy is just the Very Best. At 21? Is it possible he can improve?
He’s everything that STANDS for CELTIC. Top Player, Top Supporter (an’ I’d bet he knows all the Rebel songs too!) I cannot give you more accolade than that, young fella. Supreme! (and, just to say in fairness, it was Deila who 1st saw your ability and then ‘promoted’ you…)

Callum McGregor (just keeps showing us more; utility player but clearly found his niche whilst our Captain has been injured)

Tom Rogic (a class act with gaps and maybe stamina/concentration issues?)

Ryan Christie (are we on the edge of something here?)

James Forrest, most improved player, under Brendan, at CP. For now….. (he’s got some poor history tho’) Always HAD it but inconsistent until recently. I just hope James writes himself into celtic folklore, it’s up to him.

Filip Benkovic (a star in the making?) Ask Leicester “how much?”, buy him an’ then tell that bastard Lawwell the deal’s done.

Kris Ajer (a super talent; we may have yet to see the best of him. Not sure of his best position but ‘utility’ springs to mind.

I’d say Boyata for the last coupla months but he’s got history, bad history.

Scott Bain helped win us the League Cup. I’ve always rated him (Dundee days) but a wee bit unproven at higher levels.Big Craig, if he only had feet…… and he’d been payin’ full attention on Wednesday night.

Leigh Griffiths……I blame Brendan (as he’s treated Leigh like shit)………terrific striker with a huge amount of add-ons; dead-balls, lay-offs et cetera.
PS, all you fucking clowns who drone on about “fitness” et cetera, well, yer just that; fucking clowns.
Ye buy intae a load a shite because ye’ve nae fuckin’ brains tae interpret whit’s in front of ye. Fuckin’ clowns. (Oh, and BTW, Wednesday night is what ye’ll get fae Leigh if ye cannae fuckin’ MANAGE him.) In Brendan I nearly trust.

There ye go, for starters, I’m up for takin’ any shit that comes with the territory of expressing opinion, but rules apply here:
1) TicToc is always right.
2) If TicToc appears to be wrong then Rule 1 applies.

Tic Toc, If they were robots, they would all just need a firmware update and a modification to their software, but they are individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses. Hence there needs to be a right blend of those strengths.

Uralius, I think I see what you’re trying to say but I think you maybe miss my point. Over-playing, e.g. tactics is anathemy to the player; by all means set out with some sort of game plan and tactical set-up but THE BEST PLAYERS don’t fucking need it. Release them from the bonds of tactics and encourage them to display their talent. Scott Brown is no bad player but he’s succumbed to mental paralysis and lost some faith in himself; hence the fucking about with pointless possession, as it’s mostly going nowhere. Scott Brown NEEDS to ask himself why Celtic got it all together whilst he was injured, learn from it and JOIN IN. The Bhoy’s got it all and maybe needs to be reminded of it and encouraged; he’s not Captain of Celtic without good reason and, with a renewed positive attitude can carry on being a great player and great Captain of Celtic.
Oh and BTW Uralius, I’m not having a complete go at you, I’m offering a different view-point; statistics to me are PISH unless produced by very clever, GENUINE people using sensible assessments. Otherwise it’s “lies, damned lies and then…….”

Since “Resource Limit” appeared to have fucked off, what is it now, pray tell? I’ve had 3/4 comments ‘burned’ and only ONE had a link tae a Reb song…. WTF?

If posts are ‘in moderation’ et cetera, it would help to have a message to that effect.

If it’s a cost thing, I urge you to ask for support as I’m sure most of us would try to help out; I definitely would.

Best Tim site bar none, but mibbaes needs ‘supporting’?
