Celtic Diary Wednesday December 5: Back To Work

Celtic make the short trip to the delightful Lanarkshire town of Motherwell for tonights league encounter.

Its probably just what is needed to bring everyone back down to earth after Sunday’s cup win.

Craig Gordon will take up his position on goal, and one or two others may be rested after their exertions over the last six days.

Dedryck Boyata will miss out, in fact he’ll miss out until January as he has damaged a hamstring, which means Jozo Simunovic will get a run of games to see if he can slot in beside Filip Benkovic.

Boyata may also have hinted that he is on the verge of signing a new deal at Celtic, as on his instagram page he posted a video of himself watching the telly, and while he was doing that he made sure we could all see the contract and pen that was on his table nearby…

Oh, the little tease.

Leigh Griffiths could also find himself starting tonight, and Scott Brown may also return, but like everyone else, I’ve got no idea.

But three points are necessary , if only to put to bed the idea that we suddenly have a title race. Especially as the Ibrox side, now at the top of the table, in case you hadn’t heard, face Aberdeen tonight, which to them is what you’d call three points in the bag.

Gerrard commented that for Aberdeen , the game at Ibrox will be like a cup final. Bizarrely, if it is, their experience of these occasions should give them the advantage over the home side.

there was further disappointment at Ibrox when in the wake of Luka Modric winning the Balon d’Or, it was revealed that Alfredo Morelas had missed out on the Barn d’Or.

There seems to be a little bit of controversy around post match celebrations, and its growing since the leaked police report blamed Celtic players for causing a disturbance among “rangers “fans”, even to the extent that one of the Ibrox directors commented on it at their AGM, claiming it wasn’t the sort of behaviour anyone wanted to see.

I’m not even going to point out the hypocrisy of that when you consider how their own players acted at Tynecastle, because there’s no need.

Their manager , Steven Gerrard, also said he would run the length of the pitch should his charges score a last minute winner against Celtic, which presumably is something the Ibrox board would like to see.

Even Aberdeen players got into moaning mode after the League cup final, especially Graeme Shinnie, who thought that Scott Brown and Mikael Lustig lacked class, a charge which must be considered alongside the kicks, tugs and abuse the Aberdeen players dished out for an hour and a half.

Manager Brendan Rodgers chucked in his tuppence worth..

I can understand the raw emotion of it all. They have lost their third cup final to us.

“That emotion is in the game and players and managers are not robots.

“Especially, Graeme who is probably wanting to emulate some of the captains who have gone before at Aberdeen so when you lose it is a tough one to take.

“But I didn’t see Mikael goad the boy Ferguson at all.

“I watched the game back when I went home and I think that there is something right towards the end when the end when the ball is in the corner.

“The referee blows the whistle and it looks like the end of the game and Mika celebrates – as you would having won a Cup Final – but as he is walking forward he realises that it is not the end of the game.

“I don’t think there was any goading.

“If you look at us as a team and you look at our records, I think we are a very sporting team considering that every game we play is a huge pressure game and a Cup Final.

The players and their record from a discipline perspective is exemplary.”

Indeed, considering the kicks , tugs and punches they put up with on a week to week basis, they are positively angelic.

It must be frustrating for other sides, and there’s little wonder that some players get fed up getting beaten in cup finals, but you’d think they’d be used to it by now.

It could get even worse for them, Brendan rodgers has been talking to a potential new siging, and all we can ascertain is that its a big one. Several names have been mentioned, but there’s ;ittle substance to any of them.

When its kept secret like this, we are usually pleasantly surprised.

And it won’t be the only surprise next month..

An appeal now, which maybe one or two of you based on the west coast may be abl e to help with..

Mondays caption competition…

Guys, social media is a powerful thing these days and so are these # hashtag thingys.

Every newsdesk, sportsdesk and sporting body has a website or facebook page.

Why don’t we/can we create a hashtag ie SFA = Corruption. With a blurb attached: ‘The Scottish Football Association is the most corrupt sporting organisation in the world’ And with our world wide fan base hit every desk we can to get the message out there.

Someone might pick it up and run with it.

Heading home after a few amber ales and thought I’d throw it out there for opinion.

Never mind that.. Mr King has a wee “problem” that he disclosed in court last week – a serious allegation that an American company is using the clumpany for money-laundering purposes. Since Police Scotland, Action Fraud, the SMSM, and the Scottish Parliament have not expressed an interest in helping such an honest and upstanding institution as “rainjurzz” out of their predicament, perhaps we should alert the pertinent and competent authorities in the USA to seek their intervention. A wee email to FBI.GOV surely wouldn’t go amiss?

The Boyata conundrum, There was a time when I thought “no thanks” but and its a big butt, the new Boyata, the one that reads the game better than before, the new confident Boyata, the one who is brave and puts his tackles in quicker and is good in the air, now, that Boyata, I do like and would like him to stay. He has formed quite quickly a good partner to Benko. A class player is Benko. I would prefer to see Boyata partner Benko before Jozo. If he did stay, we would not need to purchase another centre-back, saving a transfer fee.
But if the auld Boyata appears then the greeting will start again. Howeffa other players have also been subjected to the same greeting, like Lustig for example, some want him gone also, I like Lustig as well, he has proved himself over and over, but whenever a speedy winger appears in the C.L. he too is berated. I like to see a settled first team squad, players who know each others games, we are seeing that improvement at the moment and I for one love that. The players who should be sold IMO are the ones who want to go, or their contracts are nearly up, get shot of them if possible and bring in good quality players who will strengthen the first team squad. Football has many different problems and one of them is that rich clubs are allowed to hoover up young talent. These rich clubs then pick out the best players and discard the others. If Boyata had the experience then that he has now, I am certain that he would have chosen a different career path. The thing that was clearly missing in Boyata’s game was confidence. It took him a couple of years to find it, the new Boyata the one who came back from the World cup with Belgium is completely different to the previous one. The lack of self-confidence clearly had a big effect on him, his recent bad performance with Belgium would have had a negative effect on him. Confidence and concentration is key for him…

He may’ve turned down the original contract offer, as usually happens, but rather than come back with an improved one, Celtic simply withdrew it.

I’m not having another go at Deila, as that would’ve all been down to Lawwell, who I’m having another pop at.

Luckily Brendan came in, liked what he saw, Jamsie was re-signed and the rest is history.

I’d like to see Eddy rested, as although he still leads the line superbly, he’s looking a bit tired and misplacing final balls, so could do with it.

He’ll be the main man for us against Salzburg and at Pittodrie and Ibrox, so we need to ensure he’s at his peak for those.

It’ll also be good for Griff to get more game time to work on his match fitness and sharpness, so that he’s ready to play his part in the big games, if he’s called upon.

Boyata’s a major doubt for Salzburg and Brendan expects him back before the end of the month according to the Beeb (I know, I know).

Personally I’d want his situation sorted out in January, ideally to sign a new contract but if not, if we can sell him.

I think it’d be poor planning to go into next season’s CL with an untried CB pairing yet again and, if that means breaking up the solid B&B pair early, then so be it.

What’s the situation with Ajer, will he out out ’til the New Year or could he play a part during Boyata’s absence?

Monti

Reply to  The Cha

The Cha,
Ajer is a midfielder, he isn’t strong enough yet to be a Celtic central defender.
I’d loan him out to Aberdeen for the rest of the season, then he can score the winner in the league cup final against them next season 🙂

The Cha

Nonsense, young man.

Ajer is capable of playing CB now in League, Cups, EL & CL.

He’s behind B&B but, if you get your wish and Boy leaves in January, then, when fit, he should be 1 of our 1st pick CBs.

Replacing Eddy with Griff is resting another of our strongest players.

If Boyata signs with Celtic I will be surprised. I believe we should have sold him in the summer when we had the chance. For all his defensive qualities the misplaced passes are still there to see. If he doesn’t re-sign by Dec31 then sell him on in January. Ajer and Benk for a partneship from Jan onwards would be best. Also Jozo and Benk works.
As for tonight here is my team.
Gordon; Ralston. Jozo, Benk, KT; Brown, Calmac; Morgan, Rogic, Christie; Griffs. Subs Bain, Lustig, Izzy, Olly, Eddy, Sincs, Jamesey.
HH

The Cha

We couldn’t sell him in the summer, as he was our only fit CB.

He’s been excellent the past few months and I doubt you’d need more than one hand to count his misplaced passes in all that time. Outstanding.

I also doubt he’ll re-sign but selling him is not in our gift. We’d need to make it in his interest and that is something Lawwell seems incapable of doing.

I assume you’re missing Griff from the team, otherwise brave going with 10!

Doubt we’ll see Ralston, when was the last time he was on the bench, never mind played? Gamboa more likely if Mika rested.

BJF

Good if Boyata could be persuaded to stay but I don’t think he will, Fulham probably could just about double his wages and he was promised a move there so I guess that is what will happen, Celtic supporters can but hope our enemies will be delighted to see him go..I would like Edouard, Mc Gregor and maybe Tierney to get a rest before Saturday’s tricky clash with Kilmarnock. Of course both games are worth 3 points but I can’t see the sheep beating the Rangers International Football club and Motherwell are poor this season.

Pity about Boyata so badly hope Jozo is up for it. Motherwell also have their injury woes: Cadden, Carson and Tanner are ruled out while Donnelly and Dunne are unlikely to feature. Two or three of our top bhoys might well be rested as we can still field a very strong team in their absence. I’d keep them on the bench and bring em on if things aren’t working out. A competent win similar to the recent one we had against Hamilton will be fine. If we just play our natural game I don’t think M’well will cope. Hopefully the ref will keep their hatchet men under control. A must win given the current league situation.

His agent claimed that but they do that, don’t they?

Normally, if we’d had other options and he wasn’t going to sign an extension then yes, we’d have looked to sell him.

However, that wasn’t the case and whether they took that as a “promise” they were mistaken.

Although I expect him to go, his options aren’t as clear cut as before; would he want to go to Fulham, given that its likely to be to relegation fodder and in the Championship next season?

Also when he looks at Armstrong, only just getting a chance in a shocking Southampton and Benkovic, “not good enough” for Leicester at the moment, perhaps it’ll give pause for thought.

BJF

Cha I hope so, though Armstrong looked Mustard last weekend, good if Beckovic could stay, maybe Jozo will get less injuries and settle down in a Croatian partnership. I suspect Beckovic has been brought in to replace Wes Morgan season after next, so msybe he will stay until the end of the season.

The Cha
Reply to  BJF

Agreed on Armstrong and ironic that he gets a chance and performs just as Hughes gets, deservedly, sacked.

I thought Ben had been bought to replace McGuire who wasn’t going to be sold and I didn’t think Morgan was a 1st pick anymore.

I’d like to see Ajer ahead of Jozo but not sure how far from fitness he is.

Iain in Alberta

The Cha,
I have Griffs just after Christie and just before Subs on my team for tonight. That makes 11 players. Yes it has been a while since Ralston has been on the subs bench but he is training with the first team squad and should be given a chance. As for Boyata I count misplaced and overhit passes every time he is on the park. We have differing views on Boyata. I will admit that he has improved this season so far.
Cheers, I don’t expect that my team will be the team that BR picks for tonight but just a selection for thought.

Just found out that Ralston played for the “reserve team” he scored one and got fouled for a penalty and was involved (assisted) in another goal. So BR has his own and better team selection than me. Looking forward to watching the game tonight with a beer. Nice to see Gamboa and Hayes both starting for a change.
HH

The Cha

Hopefully Ralston can knuckle down and perhaps get game time in the future.

He was widely tipped a couple of years ago but didn’t seem to do a lot when he went to Dundee United on loan, which may have caused alarm bells to ring.

Also, if the changes work out, perhaps the likes of Tierney and McGregor can get a rest on Saturday, in preparation for Salzburg.

I’ll be totally tea tonight after a beer festival yesterday but hopefully still celebrate a victory.

The point being that we have been scoring goals except to the Livvy hammer throwers who should have had a man sent off. The team was playing really well and we threatened opponents goal, so it is down to tonight’s changes. Gordons distribution was its usual garbage with no one to hit it out to, Broony was back to his sideways shuffle, Gamboa was pish and so was Hayes.
