Celtic Diary Friday November 9: Fourteen Seconds That Changed The World

Well, our world, anyway.

Celtic may not have beaten one of the most famous teams in Europe last night, but they did beat one of the better ones.

It won’t go down as a famous win over legendary opponents, as Leipzig are not one of the continents big names.

But it should, because it was Celtic’s best performance against quality…and they were quality…opposition since  Barcelona six years ago.

It finished 2-1, Keiran Tierney opened the scoring after a square pass from James Forrest bypassed all the defenders, who were expecting it to be a couple of feet further forward, and Celtic held on to, and had chances to increase that lead, before the Germans equalised.

They got a cross in, and there was someone on the end of it. One lapse, we’ve seen it all before..and we kind of half expected them to get another one fairly quickly…

Fourteen seconds later, and we’d just seen one of the best goals we will see this season.

A swift move from the kick off down the left, with no player taking more than two touches, ended with Oddsone Edoaurd tapping the ball past a despairing goalkeeper.

I don’t speak great German, but I’m sure I heard at least one of them shout the what loosely translates as;

Fuck off, we weren’t ready “.

But it didn’t matter. The goal stood.

Have a look at this from Fitbaw Tweets, which illustrates in great detail just how it happened..

There were a couple of late scares, mainly when substitute Yousseff Mulumbu went anywhere near the ball as he struggled to adapt to the pace of the game, but Celtic survived.

Actually, it was more than an exercise in survival.

These guys showed great character to recover the the setback of conceding late in the game. That resilience leads to confidence, in each other and in themselves.

The effort put in was tremendous, Ryan Christie, at the end of the game dug deep to find reserves of energy to run the ball out of defence and ease the pressure which was becoming unbearable as Leipzig themselves refused to accept defeat.

Hugging Dedryck Boyata after the final whistle, he can clearly be seen saying ;

I was fucked

Afterwards, Marcel Halstenberg of Leipzig said;

“We were a step behind too often today and made too many misplaced passes. Perhaps the atmosphere got to one or two of us as well. Now we’ve got to move on – on Sunday we’re back in Bundesliga action against Leverkusen.”

Ralph Malph of Etims helped improve the translation;

Celtic were a step or two quicker than us, and their passes always seem to find their man. The atmosphere lifted them, and one or two rose up and played beyond their usual limits. ”

It means the same thing.

It would be hard to pick out a man of the match, as everyone played their part. Some may use the Leipzig equaliser as another stick to beat Mikael Lustig with, but defending is a team effort, and analysing the goal too much would bring criticism to nearly everybody.

There’s nothing to be gained from that, and we should concentrate on the bigger picture, the one that says Celtic 2, Leipzig 1.

That result leaves Celtic in third place in the table level on six points with the Germans, with two games to play. Salzburg are top on twelve.

Next up are Rosenberg in Trondheim on the 29th of this month. Leipzig go to Salzburg.

At this point, positions on the table are decided on head to head results should the points tally be level.

However, when the group is complete, that may be irrelevant..to an extent.

Here’s how it works…

The teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied in the order given to determine the rankings (regulations Article 16.01):[1]

  1. higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
  2. superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
  3. higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
  4. higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
  5. if, after having applied criteria 1 to 4 (to a set of three or more teams), a subset of those teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the tied teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6 to 12 apply;
  6. superior goal difference in all group matches;
  7. higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
  8. higher number of away goals scored in all group matches;
  9. higher number of wins in all group matches;
  10. higher number of away wins in all group matches;
  11. lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
  12. higher club coefficient

Some of us may be worried that Salzburg will allow Leipzig to take all three points in their next game. If we assume that Celtic will win in Trondheim, then that would leave Salzburg on twelve, with the Hoops and Leipzig on nine.

Assuming again that Leipzig would beat Rosenberg, Salzburg would travel to Glasgow in the last round of matches still needing a result.

If they lost, then all three teams would be on twelve, and it would come down to goal difference between the three.

At this stage, Celtic have scored two and conceded five. But to reduce whatever Salzburgs goal difference is by the time that game rolls around, each Celtic goal would more or less count double-a positive in Celtics column, a negative in Salzburgs.

Now, if you were Salzburg manager, bearing all of that in mind, would you risk lying down to Leipzig ?

Unless Leipzig win, Celtic are back in the driving seat for qualification, Rosenberg win perhaps taken for granted, but you get my point.

Its a lot wider open than the table appears to suggest.

But we’ll worry about that if we beat Rosenberg. Thats where the focus has to be now.

Last word goes to a delighted and rightfully proud Brendan Rodgers;

We performed really well. We’ve had some good results in Europe and sometimes not.

‘Tonight was a proper win against a top-class side. Everyone knows the quality of Leipzig.

‘There are a number of times when this group of players, if it has gone against them a little bit, the game has gone away from us.

‘But it’s a mark of the very best players that, when it does go against you, you still have that belief and fight to go on and win.

‘Tonight was a great step forward for this group of players. At 1-1, they responded straight away, had that belief to get forward and got that winning goal.’

‘People see pressure as a negative,’

‘This was a pressure game we had to win but you saw the positivity of the team. We showed no fear, played with aggression and brought our identity to the game.

‘That’s what we have been seeing this team returning to over the last six or seven weeks. It’s nice they can do it not just domestically but against one of the best teams in Europe. So it’s a fantastic victory and one I’m very proud of.’

Oh, he’s not the only one…

Of course, there had to be some sour grapes.

Jonathan Sutherland of the BBC had to try to piss on our parade, but as we have explained earlier, he was completely wrong again.

Sutherland reminded Rodgers that in the head to head Leipzig would finish above Celtic, but since that would require both sides to have equivalent results at the expense of Rosenberg and Salzburg, its not really a concern. As Celtic would still have everything in their own hands even if that did happen due to the possibility of a three way tie.

It will come down to Celtic v Salzburg if it goes to the last game, whichever way you look at it. And the score in that game.

Rodgers more or less told him to do one, claiming it was typically Scottish to intriduce a negative. Sutherland whined something about it being true, and that we are the people, but was largely disregarded.

Instead, he went to his car and sang along to a song going home now that the famine is over.

Probably.

And the SPFL website couldn’t contain their delight with this over the top headline…

CELTIC BEAT LEIPZIG

The bastards, eh ?

Yet even those two couldn’t make it over the line to become this weeks

Etims Knob of the Week.

Not when they’re up against this kind of class…

ALL LIGHT ON NIGHT

Celtic’s light show was something you’d expect for Rihanna at the Hydro rather than teams coming out for a Consolation Cup-tie, says Bill Leckie

After all the pre-match hype… you were all set up for something extra-special. Instead, it was just… well, lights and sound

Lights and sound ? From a lights and sound set up ?

You cannot imagine how let down we must have all felt…

“Just lights and sound” – what did he expect, herds of wildebeest roaming majestically across the pitch?

Well, it looked alright to me, and thousands of others…

A leipzig fan writes…

Everything you’ve heard about Celtic Park is true. Incredible atmosphere

Leckie, as we know, is pretty close to the bottom of the pool when it comes to Scottish sports journalists, with only gordon Parks and that fucking idiot Gordon Smith anywhere near him, and it gives me an inordinately disproportionate amount of pleasure to ward him the title of…

Etims Knob of the Week.

I couldn’t find a picture of him, so we asked top and radio entertainer David Mitchell to help us describe him..

At FT last night I was absolutely fucked. I’d virtually gone for every ball for the full match and my tank was empty.
So how did those magnificent players feel? They must’ve been drained, to a man. They were a terrific team in every department and we beat them fair and square and that’s with a Ref who went from having a good 1st half to giving us just about fuck all in the 2nd; indeed he interfered with our rhythm and we still came out on top. Had we succumbed to some of the pressure we were under at certain times I’d still have been full of praise for our Bhoys; I think to a mhan our supporters demand that we turn up and do our best. After that we’ll accept the outcome with some grace; unlike a wee diddy 6 year old from across the Clyde. Last night our team played as a team with spirit, courage, daring and heart. I think we witnessed one of our best nights ever in Paradise. Kieran Tierney for me was MotM but it’s TEAMS who win football matches and Celtic was some TEAM last night.
Hail! Hail! to each and every one of you Bhoys. It takes some getting your head around just how far we’ve come from where we were just a few short weeks ago.
I hope all Tims all over the globe are feeling ‘on top of the world’ today and any who are not well enough then I hope you took major comfort from last night’s performance.
Hail! Hail!

Ah, Jimmybee, many thanks for that, Pal. I take it as a real compliment from a wonderful Tim, 2nd to none. Over the years on here you’ve introduced us to some fantastic insights to many things but all rooted in a love of our club and our history and in the wider issues of justice and more often than not, injustice. Stories of Celtic and stories of the Troubles, all portrayed with sensitivity and yet passion too. Jimmybee, you should write a book, Pal, I’d certainly buy it. I hope you continue to do this as I’m sure it’s very highly valued by all of us.
Take care, Pal, and thanks for everything you bring to the best Tim site on the planet bar none. (Erza a wee shout for our Dear Ralph too) 🙂
I’m now getting ready for a few days in Liverpool where I’ll hopefully watch the game in The Celtic Corner (thanks for the heads up Jimmy from some months ago) or McCooley’s.

What a performance, when all 11 player’s turn up then this is what Celtic can do, as much as i admire Broonie, he’s been a true Celtic Captain both on and off the park, but i still believe that we wouldn’t have scored that superb winning goal last night if he was playing, he’s a great holding midfielder, but at times to negative, square balls and sideways to try retain possessions,and thats exactly what he’d have done at the restart last night, instead we attacked straight away, and 14 seconds later…BOOOMMM!!!…COYBIG

Yoker Bhoy good to get that sort of feedback, maybe we can play better but if we get results in Europe like last night I am really happy. Rodgers deserves a lot of credit for this, what a deliema for the League Cup Final, glad it’s first before Salzburg at CP. The adrenaline of winning it should be enough to see us get something from Salzburg.

Indeed BJF, we are on a roll at the moment so why try to change something that’s been working so well of late? Brendan’s been brilliant and I’m sure he’ll stick with the same players that have started to develop such a good understanding and have really found their rhythm. We should be fine in the LC final but Salzburg will be a very hard nut to crack. I think we can do it though. The Livi game this Sunday should be interesting. Have a good one!

Sinclair is a major player for us and should be persevered with. Christie is a first team pick. Sorry Ralph are weak spot is Lustig but we don’t have anyone better at the moment, so it’s lustig for now. He may lift his game he does good things but salzburg will be looking at that game and identify him as a weakness so wil the rest of the spl teams. Good player but he’s now a veteran. It’s a young mans game. Maybe go back to Sweden and finish his career with dignity

Cs Rogic was marked tightly and recognised as the playmaker. He wasn’t at his best but he did some things that contributed to the performance. Ie he put his foot on the ball. The two away games we have played that wasn’t happening. Especially the Salzburg game . No outlet only Jameson and he got sent off if we continue not to be daunted by these teams. Reet, I’ve fucking had it with all these Fannies blaming Lustig, shut yer pie holes. Last game they overloaded Tierney for the first goal and nobody said he was ready for the scrap heap. Last night 2 players overloaded Boyata in the middle. Boyata went with the the player in front of him rather than jumping for the ball. Lustig didn’t have a hope in hell of suddenly transporting inferring of the player Boyata left open. How in the fuck is that Lustig’s fault? Suddenly after the magical goal to get us the lead Brendan puts Mulumbu on to track the overloading runs and when he realized that wasn’t quite going to cut it, he brought on Ayer. Away tae fuck trying to blame anyone for that.

Because he can see more than anyone playing right back if the balls being crossed from the left. He’s tried to keep a line and was caught ball watching. Both chances they had lay on were down his side. Not entirely his fault though he seems to be the one making more blunders in Europe than any other. I think we need a new right back. Gamboa is too lightweight.

Great game and even better result! KT mom without doubt, how does he do it game after game? Christie Jamesy and Calmac excellent. Boyata and Gordon still need to improve there passing out of defence though. Lustig played a fine captains role but did give the ball away once or twice and looked leggier than usual. The goal against could be summed up as all three defenders (Lustig, Boyata, Gordon) slow to see the danger and where the space was. Young Eddy played one of his best games – running with ball and going by their players with ease – manifique.
I still think Ralston should be given a chance at right back!

The only negative from last night, if there ever was a negative, is…The amorous eye’s looking at our players after last night’s Disco light’s performance that shone on a team of players that showed how talented they really are. Could they miss the lung bursting energy and talent of K.T. the wing wizardry of James Forrest, the technique of Roy of the Rogic, or the strength and the skill of Odsonne, the French magician, or the closing down of a wonderful player Calmac. or the speed and vitality of Ryan Christie. No chance, they are not stupid, they witnessed a team of players, band of brothers, who shown brighter than any disco light’s. Oh, yes they will be casting envvious eye’s wondering how can they prise them away from Celtic. The January sales just added a new dimension. Hail Hail to Scotland’s footballing championees.

Mowbray and Stubbs were good Hibs managers but didn’t want the former and don’t want the latter.

Unless it’s a sought after young player tearing it up then we shouldn’t be looking at anyone at Scottish clubs, as they’re not at the level we require.

Christie was YPOY when we signed him but its still taken about 3-4 years to get up to our level.

People always rave about Motherwell forwards but when they go back to the English lower leagues they disappear, as they’re nowhere near good enough.

Hooper scored about 20 goals in a season in the Championship for a pisspoor Scunny.

Eddy and Dembers started the season really well until they both got injured and I’ve no doubt they’d be doing it now if he’d stayed around.

Or the rest of the players in the SPFL sitting at home watching last night’s game on the telly saying, bliddy hell, have we to face that team in the league sometime soon? I think I might be feeling my Hammy that weekend, I will give that game a miss. The refs might be trying out new tricks to hold up the game, to give the rest of the teams a wee chance, under orders from the SFA. Haw John, we need to do something about the Celtic “dinny worry boss, I have a new trick up my sleeve, just in the interest of fair play mind”. Oh wait….

rebus67
5 years ago

Yes, we are definitely back. Last night proved that the improvement in the team was not purely because of the poor quality of the opposition. One of the most satisfying things about the performance was that we adjusted to the shifting tactics of the opposition. In the first half they pumped long diagonal balls into the FB areas and followed up with a high press. We handled that so well that they changed in the second half and started to overload areas across the penalty area, mainly but not exclusively to the right of our defence. Except for their goal where someone should have marked the run, we held them.
One thing we could learn from them is the way that they attack in pairs. One Leipzig player would advance on our defence, closely tracked by another about three feet behind. If the first player was tackled and lost the ball, chances were that it would spin back towards the trailing player. Very smart.
I would say our reputation in Europe received a big boost last night.

A club like Southampton are under no pressure to play an attacking midfielder they payed £7-8m for. However, with a fee of £16m+ there is more pressure and that player will get a much better chance. I would imagine Armstrong will come to regret moving 2 seasons too early and I hope all of his former team-mates are aware of this now.

Uralius – good point and I hope you’re right. When we were rubbish I suggested a cheeky wee £3-4m bid in Jan but not sure we need him now.
