Celtic Diary Monday August 27: Boyata Matters

See what I did there ? Double meaning in the headline ?

Dedryck Boyata showed an inner strength that no one thought he had yesterday when he inspired Celtic to a 1-0 win over a stuffy and predictable Hamilton side just when the team needed it most.

Somehow, the story of the season so far got a bit mixed up with the media telling us that Stevie Staunch and his Stormtroopers were blitzing their way to a 55th title-a remarkable enough achievement in itself in just seven years of the clubs existence, and Celtic were buckling under the pressure .

Fair enough, it hasn’t quite gone to plan, but one likes to think there’s time yet to put it right.

With the conclusion of the European qualifying campaign on Thursday, and a showdown with “rangers ” next Sunday, three points and a good performance were needed yesterday.

When the team was announced, there would have been a few red faces in the Green Brigade, who presented a banner to the team which indicated that they weren’t too happy at the inclusion of the Belgian defender, who according to the press had downed tools when he was needed the most.

Despite his, and his managers denials, the support chose to believe the media line, and its probably fair to say that if he had been thinking of leaving, then his mind was getting made up for him.

My own view, if his head wasn’t right, for whatever reason, he shouldn’t have played. He was honest enough to admit that.

As for the banner… If anyone on our bus had booed a Celtic player before the game started, he’d be making his own way back down the M6.

Even if Mo Johnston had come back as a player he’d get a polite round of applause before the game.

Fair enough, the first time he lost possession, failed to win a tackle or didn’t discover a cure for cancer during the game, he would have been roundly and soundly abused, but not before.

Still, the important thing was how Boyata reacted.

He put in a man of the match performance in a defence that looked confident and assured.

He scored the winning goal.

And he’s been doing research at medical school on the first Tuesday of every month into carcinogens.

Thats good enough for me.

Its also worth noting the reaction of Craig Gordon, who ran the full length of the pitch to congratulate him after the goal, showing the unity of the team, the spirit of the invincibles, to coin a phrase…

They had a wee dance, gazing lovingly into each others eyes.

Gordon said;

Whatever happens off the pitch we are 100% together on it,” he told Celtic TV. “I just wanted to show that we are absolutely together and fighting for each other and that was just a little show of that.

“I am sure he will be delighted with his goal but more important his defensive work was outstanding today.”

“And I’m fucking shite at crosses, so when the big man isn’t there we lose daft goals. ”

Mind you, if you think the Green Brigades treatment of Boyata was out of order, at least they didn’t stick the heid on him ….

Boyata is congratulated by Craig Gordon and Leigh Griffiths after his match-winner against Hamilton

The whole Boyata story has, from start to finish, divided a support that you get the feeling sometimes enjoys being divided.

This site is actually a good example of that. We can’t even agree what the right time is between us, and yet all of us support the team in our own way.

And there’s a clue in the word supporter…..

This week is the last week of the transfer window.

From Filip Benkovic to Harold Moukoudi  to Scott McKenna we will hear stories, some made up, some true, about who the club are trying to bring in.

For what its worth, I’d take little notice of them.

We have our own sources and will let you know when we hear anything. sometimes even before the deal is done.

In a previous diary earlier this year, we revelaed that Celtic would spend £20m this summer. So far, its on the £9m -more if you count the  improved deal for Rogic, as he would have had a signing on fee.

As for the £9m for Edoaurd, whether or not its paid up front or not, it still has to be budgeted for.

That still leaves a few quid for players, many of whom will wait as long as they can before choosing their move.

Lets hope they choose wisely.

Elsewhere , Hearts continued to set the pace at the top of the league table, recording a third successive victory, behind them are Celtic , moving neatly into position to take advantage of the inevitable shock that the Edinburgh side will have when they realise that not only are they early season leaders, but Craig Levein is the manager who has got them there.

Stevies Stormtroopers slipped up at Motherwell yesterday when they could only manage a 3-3 draw against struggling Motherwell, who prior to the game had not registered a goal or a point in the league.

I think they had a throw in in their first game, but thats about it.

Ahead of next week, the Ibrox support are taking this setback very well, at least by their own standards…

A young lady offered her opinion of “rangers ” shortly after they scored..

However, the puritans from the pits were outraged.

As usual.

And then this, when the Ibrox side didn’t get a penalty…presumably for a push on Kyle Lafferty, their latest acquisition during their “Summer of Stars ”

Er, “rangers ” are defending a corner here…

Motherwell got their late, late equaliser-93 mins -shortly after Ibrox manager Gerrard introduced a novel and original way of defending a late set piece.

He made a substitution, thus allowing his defence to re organise at short notice to become even more effective.

Sadly, this backfired, but we hope it won’t discourage Stevie from introducing other tactical revelations when he feels the occasion is right.

The man truly is a breath of fresh air.

I don’t think we could have been any more invisible if we were wearing them pink,seat-coloured,away tops.

Today…

By the way, I’ve heard something very distresssing re Ibrox and investment.

Distressing in that there looks to be a lot of money coming their way.

I’m reluctant to go into detail because even our regular pish stained drunk wouldn’t come up with something like this.

But I don’t mind admitting it flies in the face of everything we’ve been led to believe about their imminent demise.

Ah , fuck it.

Make your own mind up.

See that guy that joined the board the other week, Wolhardt, Dutch fellow with serious business links ?

If its not bizarre enough that a guy like that is involved with a club like that, it gets dafter.

King is going to raise the money to sort his TOP problem, there is going to be a share issue, but it will be kept in house, with money coming in to cover the  share offer King has to make.

Yeah, I know. sounds fucking ridiculous, and to be fair to the reader bear in mind we did give you the story about them stealing water from the church.

So take it with a pinch of salt, I would, but our purpose is to entertain, and if someone wants to tell me scare stories about a resurgent “rangers ” , then its only fair I should spoil your bank holiday in the way they have spoiled mine.

Apart from anything else, what could a guy like Wolhardt possibly want with Kings “rangers ” ?

Unless he sees potential in the place.

In which case..

Great performance by Boyata yesterday.

The banner was a disgrace as were the so called supporters who were booing him.

If the player wants to leave by all means sell him but while he’s wearing the Hoops on the park he’ll have my support.

Yesterday’s performance wasn’t bad considering Hamilton parked the bus, all we’re missing is the finishing which I’m sure will come on Thursday and Sunday.

The Green brigade’s banner was spot on & they aren’t so called supporters, they are Celtic supporters who care deeply about their club….and unlike you, don’t eat prawn sandwiches!

Monti the banner was ok , if the Green Brigade are fans of Celtic . They are not supporters, as no way does the banner show support or encourage to help to build confidence to win games

The murky world of agents and how they have a poisonous effect on football, most come into meetings wearing a mask and with two six shooters on their hips, tethering their horses and leaving a slime trail in their wake.
What has happened to my team, its kind of lost its vigour, not that long back it played with energy and purpose sweeping all before it. If it had been a dance it would have been a “rock and roll man”, now its more of a “Viennese Waltz”. I look forward to seeing Odsonne and Moussa terrorising the mankies after sweep, sweeping aside the men from Carvonia. Celtic united can never be defeated. Two or three signings of quality would boost everyone and be the catalyst for success on the park. KTF.

Boyata, it’s all about opinions and if some felt the need to lambast them that’s up too them. Personally I think that Boyata should have been stuck with the youngsters until there was something done to resolve this situation. The bottom line for me is that football now is so driven by getting results that when you need to play players that can win/help to get the points they’ll play, mind the 3 amigos? Ralph, got to disagree on the Judas remark, I would never have cheered for him on returning to the
club, call it whatever, but not for me.

The Huns- they go into an EL tie with a slender 1-0 lead against a team that might not be great shakes but it’s a very precarious situation they’re in. If the Russians score first it could be a long night for the Huns though they should go through.

Sunday, I cannot wait. That mob aren’t anything at all. All their play goes through the full backs, halt them trying to feed prick face Lafferty and Morelos and we’re halfway there. I also noticed that when you play two combatative players up top the Huns are shaky, though this depends if Slippy goes with 3 or 4 at the back. The pricks are still confident but we’ll be right up for this, the players know the score, they must perform, we’ll accept nothing less against any team but especially the crypt dwellers.

We are going through a sticky patch, given what this squad of players have delivered over the past two seasons and the amount of games they have played this is inevitable. Two victories in our next two games and the MSM will have no option but to focus on the tribute act. As for Boyata he is still a Celtic player and as Ralph says the clue is in the title “Supporters” COYBIG. There will be two/three new arrivals this week and if my information is correct we will not be disappointed HH

We should not be boing our own players when their on the pitch wearing the hoops, no matter how much we think he should be shown the door. Me personaly I don’t want him anywhere near the team due to what’s happend but I have not and never will boo one of my own players especially when their on the pitch trying to get us the 3 the points during the game. We MUST stick together at this time as the team needs us more than ever as were not playing anywere near as good as we know we can. If we can get a few signings in, for the problem positions before Friday we should be on our way to 8 in a row. HH C.O.Y.B.I.G.

Boyata, it’s all about ones opinion. Some for, others against.
Remember the 3 amigos behaviour back in the day? If my memory serves me right they never copped the same treatment that DB is currently getting.

Question, Boyata plays on Sunday and scores the winning goal in a game where we’ve been battered, is it praise or get to fuck?

Crypt Dwellers, watching their matches and all their play goes through the two full backs, exploit it Celtic. Their defence, if they play 3 at the back they are very shaky and don’t handle two up top that well, exploit it if they do so. In saying that I think they’ll play 4-5-1. They’re not any great shakes but have improved on the field. We’ll get by Sudova and then it’s William. We must bring our usual A game even though we are a bit short on confidence. The media are already up to their usual shit with us and if the pricks were too win, they’ll be all over us.
If we win, their wankfest with Slippy and the bigots will change slightly, we’ll probably get a couple in before Friday and once we get going again it biz as usual.

I agree that we should not be booing our own players in a game. However, I do not think for one minute that we should be applauding his every touch of the ball. This is (allegedly) our “best” central defender. A contracted player who refused to play in arguably out biggest game of the season, a player who claimed to be injured, but out Manager claimed was fit. I know who I believe. My own opinion is that Boyata is a snake, pure and simple. He is a mercenary who had two mediocre games against the two worst teams in the World Cup, then another mediocre game against England reserves. He now thinks he is a world beater. As far as I’m concerned let him think that in any strip except the Hoops. As Jock Stein said “The Celtic Shirt does not shrink to fit inferior players”

I think you are being overly critical. He had three more than mediocre games according to the Belgium press. England’s reserves? You’re having us on. Look at the team. Boyota is 27 he has a diminishing number of years to earn big money – what better time than after the world cup with his reputation is at its highest. You can be sure his agent is playing a leading role in all this.He wanted away I think this was going to obvious and Celtic should have prepared for the inevitable rather than take a “wait and see” approach. Whether injured or not who can really say. I don’t rate him that highly but he’s the best we have at present. If he wants away let him go and get some money for a replacement. Perhaps BR takes too much credit for getting him into Belgian squad by improving him and this gave him a false sense of Boyota’s loyalty. BR has some blind spots -all the blame can’t be shifted elsewhere. Sutton was right I think when he pointed this out. Many of us have been saying this for some time.

The whole issue with Boyata isn’t clear.

What we do know – he’s got a dodgy agent
What we do know – he’s not a Diego Godin
What we do know – he claimed he was unfit, manager says otherwise.

What we don’t know are the definitive facts surrounding this whole affair.
As BR said yesterday, there has to be unity between the supporters and the players that’s what’s made the last two seasons so successful.

If we stand as one we succeed, if we’re divided, we fail. That’s the bottom line folks. We need to be united not shouting about issues that we’re not in the know about.

CS, I’ve my own opinion on this whole debacle as everyone else has and we should freely express them in an adult manner not shouting a lot of shite without any facts. No one on here knows what’s went on and it’s all just speculation, but like I say, we’ve all the right to say regardless of our outlook on this. I never saw Sportscene as I can’t go that whining Hun Steven Thompson. I personally think that for differing factors we’re panicking a bit and lashing out when remaining calm and trusting what we have to pull us through is key.

If we all trust the manager then we run with what he thinks is best for the team even though it might
leave a bitter taste on somes palate.

I was originally of the thought, fuck him into the reserves but being a saleable asset it doesn’t help us if we want to unload him plus we’re really short at the back just now. Again, unity is the key. Let’s not give our many detractors a rod to batter guck out of us. To quote German Philosopher, Hegel- “truth, is only in reality as a whole.”

If boyata was the difference btw Celtic making the cl or not, then that’s pretty sad. Did boyata make lustig fuck up twice? Fans have bought into believing newspapers however boyata is a clown for having a fuckwit of an agent. He’s old enough to know better. But it does take some balls to go out and play well and score the winner around such negativity. Especially from Sutton. Sutton’s becoming despicable

For the clueless, a supporter is someone who does everything they can do to help, assist and progress their team, which includes calling out the rot within and agitating for necessary change.

A ‘supporter’ is someone who does bugger all when their team is in need of change, exemplified by the Huns who did nothing to avert the sad (oh how we cried) demise of their team.

I know which one I am; which one are you?

Ralph excellent diary, we all are entitled to different views on Boyata but we don’t know enough facts, some people think
They know but that is different. Most of us are sceptical about the media but suddenly over Boyata they tell the truth, as my pal Monti would say, pish.
I do know that over the years some players are not in the right mind to play and “ feel” they have a twinge others dont want to lose their place and play when they are at 80%. You pays your money. I applauded Boysta because I didn’t agree with the Green Brigade and I knew the media would use the banner and the boos against our club.

There are too many people that b piece the diarrohea the m Dia print about Celtic. Anything they can dig up to belittle the club, the annoying thing is the clowns that fall for it, the Green Brigade fell hook line and sinker. The players showed their support for Boyata as did a large group of the support.
I have no love for Boyata but believe more that is coming out f Paradise, than the bias the media have. Just look at the coverage of yesterday’s games, Celtic stuttered, Sevco fought bravely and were bullied, again no mention of McGregor and others having a kick at the Well player.
As a group of supporters you pay the money we can criticise, but bear in mind that the scum will jump on anything and blow it up as a disaster
I still believe that BR has the skill to move things forward, as for yesterday’s game, the referee crap, Hamilton ruined the game, might as well have lined up in the goalmouth
Celtic were too slow going forward, bu deserved more, still three points.

‘Doing a Boyata’ or worse has precedents at Celtic. Pat Crerand suffered an anger management episode at half time in a New Year’s Day at Ibrox and, some say, was refusing to join his team-mates for the second half. Remember: no substitutes then.
Nicholas went strangely AWOL for a Cup semi months before joining Aberdeen. Johnson allowed Agent Orange to tout him to English sides on a weekly basis.
Viduka refused to take the field for the second half in the ignominious cup tie against ICT.
Numerous players have displayed minimum commitment in the last few months of their Celtic contracts.
Lesson: there is nothing new under the sun.

Just watched highlights of the Edinburgh Tattoo. It’s difficult to find words to do it justice but it’s absolutely magnificent. The talent, organisation, choreography, aye absolutely EVERYTHING about it is just fantastic. In a class by itself.
It makes me see, in a way, how simple it should be to organise a football club/team in such a manner that it performs week in week out, in a highly efficient and acceptable manner. Encouraging each individual to parade their talents but in such a way that the “team” benefits over and above the individual.
I reckon we should have the team watch this spectacle and then ask them just what’s so hard about putting your heart and soul into performing for 90 minutes a coupla times a week.
Oh and those wonderful individuals from all over the world will no doubt be paid in ‘peanuts’. Is Mammon really killing the game? I think it’s definitely contributing.

To Noel, Monti and anyone else who wishes to comment about this. I despise war and everything associated with war-mongering companies like BAE et cetera, and war-mongering leaders of countries, e.g. May, (and the worst Brits of all, Blair and Thatcher, as well as Trump, Netanyahu, and all the rest.
However, just accepting it for itself it’s impossible in my view not to appreciate the wonderful talent on display in every way and from all over the world. I don’t know if either of you have actually watched the BBC highlights but I’d encourage anyone to at least watch this spetacle (1 hour) and put aside any prejudices as you watch.
BTW, I abhor the Poppy crap (the red one) and vociferously agree with “no blood-stained poppies on our Hoops). I would also promote the White Poppy in an effort to show up war in all its forms and turn people against it. Also, I appreciate the reason for the white in the Irish Tricolour and also acknowledge that those showers of orange bastards are too entrenched in their own bigotry to even understand what the white in that flag stands for as they cling on, like drowning men cling to a straw, to their poxy Butchers’ Apron and their wee red hands.
Their desperation speaks volumes as they’re on the wane and will soon be consigned to history, as will their fragile ‘belief system’.

The Boyata story would only be a credible argument if he was any good. Ok he was half decent against a Hamilton team that spent most of the game defending. What was it he did to be everyone’s MOTM? Score a tap in? Brendon has clearly got the dressing room together and fair play but Boyata remains a bombscare on the pitch. That he is our best central defender is scandalous and the board (and Brendon) have a lot to answer for. Our defensive frailties have been obvious for some two years and have not been addressed

TicToc

Generally agreed Macca. Regardless of recent events with him (Boyata) he should’ve been punted months ago due to his lack of ability and heart, and if it’s true we turned down £9 million from Fulham then I’m lost for words to describe the stupidity there. I think Moussa got MOTM and rightly so, and he was far from his best. He missed a great heading chance (to his left), and arguably 2 headers (the one over the bar, but he WAS being heavily challenged). Boyata missed a very good chance as well as scoring and had nothing to do other than very average defending. Moussa is getting in and around everything up front again and will show very soon the player he is, hopefully beginning with our next two games.

CS, If Rodgers is drinkin’ too many Martinez then he needs help; so that’s why he thinks Boyata is a footballer?
We need tae get Lenny in on an emergency loan until poor Brendan has a chance tae dry out!! 🙂

Come on Charlie, never put a foot wrong? You could have payed centre half on Saturday and strolled it. Hamilton offered little. Let’s see how he handles that big clown Lafferty. Tell me you are confident he’ll be in his back pocket.

Weered, you’re going from the sublime to the ridiculous with that comment, but it’s your choice entirely.

Weered, just read Eamonn McCanns book – War and an Irish Town again, excellent read and analysis of the class issues in the North in the 60’s/70’s.

Clearly set the ‘pig amongst the catkins’ here 🙂
As I’ve often said, the written word (or typed) is a very poor medium for discussion. There was no reflection on what I said AFTER the 1st para, i.e. most of my comment. I think Noel and Monti could at least take the comment as a whole and judge THAT instead of seperating one part and ‘having a go’ at it.
Weered, since you say “I’ve witnessed both. I should know!”, maybe you’d be kind enough to expand on that?
Anyway, how an innocuous comment about an International spectacle of music, dance, choreography et cetera gets reduced to fucking comments comparing it to a “car bomb” is typical of the hysteria associated with blogging and THAT is a real fucking shame. END OF.

Tic Toc,
What was your favourite part of the Tattoo?
Was it all those men in skirts blowing on sticks?

Being an Internationalist anything that alludes to the military is anathema to me TT, but as I said earlier, each to their own mate.

Aye CS, indeed it does.
BTW, as I (I was aka “Resource Limit” for 2 comments) have had time to reconsider in light of your consistently good comments generally, I’ll fully accept that my “Resources” have been “Limited” and give way to a superior commentor. 🙂

Well episode four of “the Story of Ireland” another factual record of Irelands history, narrated by Fergal Keane, look at at the past to foretell the present and perhaps the future. A tale of great tragedy of mass emigration hunger and disease and privations. Scotland emigrated and the Irish died. A nation disposed and bludgeoned into submission. Ironic that the 1.5 million people who emigrated to America would become a powerful force in American politics especially N.Y. within a decade and would in turn provide money and arms and civil war experience in the fight for the survival of the Irish people through the Fenians. A story of suffering, of struggle of land dilution, intersperced by one or two major players like Daniel O’Connoll, William Pitt and catholic emancipation. Charles Parnell, Michael Davot, I learned of the Irish fighting on both sides of the Boar war, it was no surprise to find that the Boars thought the Irish to be rough, but the numbers who’s bodies remain in well tended graves, was a surprise.
To find out about the Irish people buried in Ireland in mass graves
was no surprise, to learn of the numbers emigrating to America and to learn of the 5000 who died when they arrived of disease was difficult to accept. The act of union with England in 1801, Pitts attempt to get home rule, Trevelyan’s bitterness towards the Irish, the public works that he stopped, well I could go on and on, if you get a chance if you are interested it must be on the BBC i player. If you know your history…..
