Celtic Diary Thursday August 16: Support Split, Players Split, Time to Split ?

That headline could have been so much better had Celtic been drawn to face Hadjuk Split in the Europa League.

The Europa League and the League cup. for those not watching on Tuesday, thats where the next two games are.

The League cup , for Celtic, is a fairly straightforward expedition. four games, all of which are against teams with much smaller budgets who cannot possibly hope to compete, but there might be an occasional shock, a big result for them.

Its part of the treble that Celtic have secured twice in two years. Seriously weighted in our favour, its still a trophy nonetheless, and Saturdays visit to Partick Thistle could mean that a third treble is of the agenda.

It could also mean that the hoops have picked themselves up and decided things are what they are, and we have to deal with them.

I’m far less optimistic about this game than I was about the Athens tie, because if Celtic perform as they have done in their last few games, its going to be a long hour and a half.

They’ve forgotten how to get that rythmn back.

And they need to do it very , very quickly.

The support have decided half the team shouldn’t still be here, and the other half should be sold. All very well and good, but when you have a manager, a media and most hurtful , a support demanding that you are replaced, telling you that you are not up to it at this level, and claiming you shouldn’t have been signed in the first place, is it any wonder the players couldn’t focus on Tuesday night ?

I’m not excusing their performances, collective performance, that is, but I can understand it.

The fear of making a mistake and being castigated has overtaken the desire to do well, and thats placed Celtic at the top of a very slippery slope.

You could see it in their faces, and you can see it in their body language.

If you look beyond your own anger, that is.

The Europa League qualifier is coming up next week, and a morale boosting win over Partick is essential to repair the damage done to the players confidence over the last week or two.

And the support need to get off their backs, though fortunately its an away game and the away support tend to be a little more forgiving and encouraging than the home equivalent.

Which is good, because they will need to be.

There should also be a timely reminder for all of us in that we aren;t actually in the europa League yet, and its by no means a diddy cup.

Likely opponents next week are Suduva, who appeared at Celtic Park back in 2002, had a look around at the place and while they were doing that, were on the end of a pasting by a Celtic team smarting from an unexpected champions league exit in Switzerland.

That Celtic team were streetwise, full of experienced competitors who would go on to be respected around the continent.

That Suduva team were hopeless, and I’m being kind.

The teams are much closer together in ability now, and  Europa League qualification is by no means certain.

And when we get there, look who’s already there, waiting for us… and thats before the play offs are decided..

Whilst we would all rather be at the big boys table, there’s a few teams in there that would maybe give us a decent night out.

And with only two European trophies up for grabs a year these days, we might as well have a crack at the one that gives us the best chance of success. Not that we have any choice, mind.

The Europa is second best, but its still better than staying home on a Thursday.

Its where we are.

Put the toys back in the pram and deal with it.

( Is that you, Peter-Ed )

By dealing with it, i mean maybe changing around how we approach these games.

This is the “pass map ” from the Athens game, and when you look at this, and consider its what we do week in, week out, then no wonder AEK never looked uncomfortable.

That goes for the players as well. Take the initiative. Be brave.

Throw a curve ball every now and then.

As the support blame the players, the players, who cannot publicly blame the support need someone to vent their anger on, and Dedryck Boyata, who made it perfectly clear he didn’t want to come back to Celtic after the World cup, has been made to sit by himself in the corner, with only Kouassi Eboue still talking to him.

Boyata is the fall guy in the dressing room.

The rest of them are the fall guys to the supporters,

Peter has fallen out with Brendan, who blames him for giving him the money to waste on around seventeen players, only some of whom have turned out to be of any use.

Brendan is annoyed at Peter, after the CEO went out to get some juice, and asked Brendan if he wanted anything.

“Get me a coke ” said the manager

“and if they don’t have any ? ”

” ah, just get me anything “…

Lawwell returned with a steering wheel cover for a Ford Fiesta..

This story isn’t true, but its a good way of illustrating the level of understanding between the two.

It’s all getting a bit silly.

The priority though, is to get the players heads back up.

Anything else can wait.

The fall out from Tuesdays defeat has given the English media something to talk about as well. Their Scottish contacts, such as Kris Commons and Andy Walker have stoked the fire of dissatisfaction as , indeed has Talkshite Radio and its resident experts.

Of course, this has little to do with anything else other than the fact that with English football largely abandoned by fans, they have to turn to a somewhat more passionate set up north of the border to elicit any kind of response.

They know that Celtic fans may not be one hundred per cent behind the board or the manager right now, so they play on that, in the full knowledge that we may criticise our club, but if an outsider says something, the ranks are closed and the guns are aimed.

All good listening and viewing for an English audience that has long since given up any hope of getting their game back to its roots.

For us, though, it gets our blood flowing, and if we can channel that energy behind the players, who are feeling pretty unloved right now, then their little campaign to take the wheels off our truck will backfire.

And we can get this show back on the road…

Its going to be tough.

The Champions League exit will leave us open to offers for some of our players who are perhaps our more lucrative assets.

In fairness, should Dembele, Ntcham and others listen to the offers that have apparently already been tabled, it would be difficult to persuade them to stay.

Its going to be even more difficult to try to replace them.

There is little we can offer any top player now to entice him to Celtic. Thats reality.

But we do have a coach that has proven he can improve what we have.

If he wants to do that.

Thats our best shot right now.

A failure to plan ahead for the qualifiers has cost us more than just money, so we need to adjust our expectations, and we need to react positively.

Starting at Partick.

Its all been a little glum , and so heres a picture to cheer you up.

Think about it…

We didn’t do a caption competition yesterday, so we go back to Tuesday for this picture..

I said it on yesterday’s diary and I’ll say it again- there needs to be a united front coming from everyone that cares about the club and we need to move forward from this blip, I know some folk are unhappy that we never made it through to the CL but where we are, is where we are. Again, we need to let those who are slaughtering us know that we’re taking no prisoners and hope that we start scudding anything that is put in front of us on the field regardless of who the opponents are. I see Leigh Griffiths has got the ball rolling in terms of the hysterical criticisms that are being fired our way. We need to get back to doing what we do best.

Despite the media and everybody else not Celtic readynto break out the broken crest, there is no crisis at Celtic. There have been a couple of poor results and astoundingly that was the first time in two years we lost back to back games. This is early season bumps compounded by some poor work on the teenager front by the transfer guys! They have to be better. The team is essentially sound and very much good enough to have a very good chance of the treble and progress in the Europa. Everybody get down, nobody gets hurt as Grace Jones so poinently put it. Calm calm calm

Brendan and the board also should take some credit for retaining the services of key players like Dembele and Ntcham (so far!) Keeping hold of top players is like a good transfer, worth its weight in gold. So we lick our wounds now, aim for another Seville and go for the QUADRUPLE!! This is a good team, needs a few tweaks but the spirit is what helps us to win through in the end. There will be … a ten in a row, they can say what they like!

There will be a way to forensically break down the accounts into common speak and find out exactly where our (Celtic’s) money goes. I’m sure amongst our very ***catholic support there are many who could do this but alas I’m not able to. My guess is that DD is a large, net gainer from his association with our Club. I KNOW that he has a class of shares which pay annual dividends, unlike those that most of us hold.
I’d love to know more on this and would ask anyone competent to post same.

We have to get our mojo back by playing a settled 11. AEK are a team we would have beaten had Dembele Edouard and Boyata played.
Sinclair has to come back into the side Hayes is nowhere near the player Scott is.
The team is fragile we the fans are making them so.We want our young ones to be positive in their support of Celtic by acting like huns we are showing them the wrong way. Sing songs encourage and stop with the boos.
We have been blessed with 7 in a row back to back trebles lets make sure we are there for the team through this . The team is much better we all know that they will bounce back much quicker if we all get behind them starting this weekend.
The media will be hoping of board out banners players being abused dont give them what 5hey want.

I’ve watched Celtic for 40 years and witnessed some dark days, unfortunately we are nowhere near Champions league level, but the Europa league should give us the opportunity, for the players and fans to visit some other places and hopefully rack up some wins.

We have a good team and a good crop of young players a few additions would make all the difference CB and a creative midfielder in my opinion

The two wide players continually move inside into the heart of the defence and compact the game rather than stretch the game by staying wide and getting to the by line.

Keep the Faith, this is a good time to be a TIM.

in Lustig , Boyata , Simunovic , Ajer , Hendry and Tierney we have 6 International defenders , 2 of whom played at the World Cup .
Interested to know how many Internationals were in the AEK defence and how many were at the WC for instance .
Not sure buying in more defenders will solve the problem , though it may help .
As brilliant as BR ( and I’m a huge BR fan ) has been , he just doesn’t seem to be able to organise a defence .
Rather than the knee-jerk reaction of calling for more/different personnel , this organisational failure needs to be looked at or else it’ll be round and round the same failings just with differing faces .

Give me an example CS of this quality and price :

one of ours is being quoted at 9-10 m (Boyata) plus a full-back at 25mplus (Tierney)
Many rate Ajer and BR rates Hendry .
Simunovic was supposedly “highly rated” when he came to us .

The Belgians rate Boyata , the Norweigans rate Ajer , the Swedes still rated Lustig enough to play him at the WC and BR among others rates Hendry .

Personally , I don’t overly rate our CBs but concede that more knowledgeable football people DO .
Yet for Celtic they’re all over the place .
Again I’ll point to the AEK defence . Would you like any of them at Celtic ?
I also recall the defence when we beat Barca .
No BIG names , certainly no 10m bids yet they produced a superb COLLECTIVE defensive display

For me the organisational skills ( or lack of) needs addressing first then chosen personnel to fit into this organised unit .

Lustig can’t perform at the level we need, perhaps Ajer and Hendry eventually will. Simonovic regressing for some reason. Boyota doesn’t want play any longer. Tierney is only player making a real positive contribution. Certainly need reinforcements.

Its time to show some grit,
and then we spit, at the MSSM,
just a bunch of hypocrits,
Sevco have received another writ,

There is no more credit,
So their pride takes another hit,
King goes apeshit,

As their credit has over reached its limit.

Been watching even longervJimbo and yes it doesn’t compare to the dark days but then why should it. We’re double treble winners with a good manager and we should be kicking on. That’s why everyone is so disappointed. We have stood still. Sadly recent matches show we are not a good team. We are poor at the back, lack a spark in midfield and cannot keep our strikers fit. Have a look at the teams already qualified in the Europa league and see how we compare

Reply to  San Miguel

San Miguel, I think you’re spot on re NOT blaming us supporters; we RESPOND to what we see in front of us. Any failure begins, and is caused by either/or: the Board (lack of ambition/ability/spending), the Manager e.g. (lack of best selection, poor tactics, and/or over-coaching) or the Players (failing to work in unison, failing to ‘turn up, et cetera)
I think it’s useful to consider “PROFESSIONAL” here as the Players, Manager and Board would all happily be tagged by it.
Us supporters would probably be okay with “AMATEUR”
Amatuer: One who practices until he/she gets it right.
Professional: One who practices until he/she NEVER gets it wrong.
So, whose fault is it then? The evidence is abundant, and it sure as fuck ain’t us supporters.
But feel free to make your own minds up here.

We should avoid kneejerk reactions that this is state of affairs has come out of nowhere without any warning therefore we don’t immediately know how to deal with it.

3/4 key targets were identified in May/June who were seen as 1st team players and were fairly easily achievable.

Every single one of them were not signed and this is the crux of the matter and whoever was responsible for that needs to fess up, explain how they’re going to do a helluva lot better in the future or get shot.

The so called fans who wish to shut down healthy debate are as poisonous to our long term well being as the worse excrescence of the media.

Celtic are not good enough for the UCL, it would be nice to be there, but the continuous thumping so do not help team moral.
Overall the team were better than AEK but they could not put away their chances.
Playing the same formation against teams needs to change, also journeymen that have been bought by BR have to move on. There is a nucleus of a good team there, and yes we have lost two games agains a Hertz to ram that kicked us of the park, and a Greek team that played well defensively.
Our tactics should be 3-5-2 close the midfield down, with two strikers we should score goals, better to score more than you lose.

The only sensible option is to defer judgement on AEK until their probable Champs League participation and, if they take a few rogerings, then we can say they’re much of a muchness with us.

The brutal fact is that they simply created 3 chances and scored 3 goals and that’s all that they needed to do. We simply do not know if they needed to create 4, 6 or 10 chances if they could do it, as we didn’t ask the questions.

It reminds me of last season when PSG were hailed as the best team on the planet because they beat us 5-0. We aren’t the benchmark for teams at that level and even if they’d beaten us (gulp) 10-0 it would still be an irrelevance when they came to Madrid etc.

We were flying at the start of the season when we had Mousa and Eddy in tandem and the sooner we get both back fit (and unsold!) the better.

I hope the stories about Denayer are not true. If he is only joining us because the Turks cannot afford him, he will be a temporary signing. More importantly, he is a player struggling to hit his predicted potential. Not the perfect foil for our two CB projects.

Surely, he is not the only target that we have unearthed!

Ajer is the CB to bring the ball forward, whereashis partner should be a strong defensive CB, preferably experienced.

If we cannot get that, it would be better to go with a promising CB from the Bulgarian league. Their top clubs have a string of them in the 19-22 range. Do we scout putside the English leagues?

Buy Denayer and you get another. Boyata…….a pile of troubles.

The criticism is a bit over the top I actually thought celtic played well in Athens and should have won, it wasn’t a Legia Warsaw, Malmo or even a Zenit type of performance. What I do disagree with is players should be man enough to take criticism, christ they are well paid and have got a massive ego at the best of times. If they can’t take it, then they are in the wrong sport they should maybe take up badminton or netball or something more women like.
