Celtic Diary Tuesday August 7: Tough At The top

UEFA sorted out the last crop of ties yesterday when they arranged the remaining clubs into the play off round of the Champions League qualifiers, and afterwards they added the consolation cup matches so that everyone sort of knows where they’re going this year.

Celtic will face the winners of the Malmo -Videoton tie should they progress beyond AEK Athens.

And it is an arrangement, this UEFA draw nonsense…

UEFA cheating

Just a reminder that 21 of the 26 teams who automatically enter the group stage come from just 6 nations. The crooks at have ensured that most of europe is sitting on the sidelines trying to catch scraps from the table. An absolutely abhorent system.

Thankfully, our own SFA are beyond reproach in the matter of favouring any of their member clubs.

Unimpeachable, in fact.

It seems they do this arrangement ahead of the ties being scheduled in case there’s a shortage of planes for the fans. Of course, Celtic, who always put their supporters first, have an arrangement with a travel company to guard against any problems…

Oops…

FLIGHT FLOP

Celtic fans raging after official travel firm fail to secure chartered flight to Greece for crucial AEK Athens Champions League qualifier.

Celtic’s travel social media account broke the news on Twitter earlier today, saying: “Athens update: Unfortunately, due to the high cost of securing an aircraft to Greece at this time of year, an Official Fan Charter in partnership with Nirvana Europe is not a viable option for the fixture v AEK Athens.”

Apparently, even the players have had to hire a mini bus.

Fortunately, there’s one chap who is so disillusioned with the way things are going in his own little world, he’s open to offers to drive…

Olivier Ntcham looks like he’ll be fit and ready for the game, and in fact, we seem to be pretty much at full strength, as Dederyck Boyata looks set to abandon ship and become a cottager.

No, he’s not taking up a job with the BBC, he’s probably going to Fulham, who are nicknamed the cottagers, presumably after some sort of scandal or other.

£9m for a guy in the last year of his contract is not to be sniffed at, unless, of course, he decides he wants to stay and turn down around £50,000 a week and a sizable signing on fee.

Talkshite Radio reports that Aston Villa, a place where careers go to die, are about to hijack Celtic’s move for John McGinn.

They might, and he’ll fall apart down there, like everyone else who motored along the A38 looking for success has done, and we’ll get him for less than nothing next summer.

Celtic have reportedly been beaten to the signing of John McGinn.

Brendan Rodgers looked to be on the brink of landing the 23-year-old Hibernian midfielder, but Championship club Aston Villa have made a dramatic last-ditch move for him, report SunSport.

Villa are ready to give the Scotland international a medical today ahead of a £4million move, which would represent a coup for manager Steve Bruce in his promotion push this season, which began with a 3-1 win at Hull, live on talkSPORT 2.

Losing out on McGinn will infuriate Rodgers as he looked almost certain to land the highly-rated Glasgow-born star.
But Bruce is now positive about the season ahead following the takeover. “Over the last two weeks we’ve breathed a bit of life back into Aston Villa,” he said.
“I’ve said that whether I’m here or someone else, the owners obviously have deep pockets which you need in football these days and if you are a club like Aston Villa.
“They’ve been nothing but supportive in the last 10 or 12 days.”
Bruce is also in for Bristol City full-back Joe Bryan and says: “we’re in talks with the club but there is no deal reached yet”.

Odd, that, you’d have thought Bruce would have said something about McGinn…

Speaking of Talkshite, piss poor pundit Andy Walker suddenly regained a bit of credibility on the station, though as it was Talkshite, no one would have heard him…

I didn’t, but Celtic Da ( presumably the Da means he’s a legal man ) did…

In defence of Andy Walker, when interviewed on Talk sport tonight by a hun friendly reporter, who said rangers had been unfairly treated by being demoted; Walker’s reply was, I can’t let you get away with that, rangers were liquidated, and owe a lot of money to the creditors”!

We’re just one game into the season, and it’s all getting a bit strange.

Despite the arrival of Stevie Gerrard at ibrox, the bookies, who are rarely wrong, have made their minds up on his staunch challenge..

Well, Paddy Power at least..

CELTIC CROWNED CHAMPIONS AGAIN AS WE PAY OUT AFTER JUST ONE GAME

After seeing Rangers and Aberdeen play out an uninspiring 1-1 draw, we’ve already had enough and we’ve paid out on Celtic winning the league again…

Oh, that reminds me…this book was handed in at Pittodrie on Sunday, and we’ve been asked to help locate the owner..

Gerrard is finding it tough up here, and with only two wins in five games, there’s no sign of it getting any easier.

One of his players found out for himself that opponents are no longer prepared to roll over to the Ibrox club…

The times they are indeed a changing.

Of course, all of this is down to a conspiracy. Gerrard reckons that his new club have long since been the victims of poor decisions and bias, which presumably he concluded after an in depth analysis of the Scottish game before he took the Kings shilling and moved his talents north.

We have decided to help, and later  this week, we’ll feature fifty honest mistakes that may have helped him come to this conclusion…

Yesterday, we showed you this…

What’s the point of yet more money swelling the coffers whilst we deplete the team?

Rodgers has said he wishes to strengthen the team but not simply stockpile players.

The board seem to have a dual strategy of weakening the team and stockpiling cash.

If we wanted to punt this summer then we should have had a replacement in last summer ala Ntcham and Armstrong.

I know some people will spin this as “losing” £9m but that was lost last year and it’s an unnecessary risk this one.

What’s the point, the point is he is shite and we could do better, much better and the Window isn’t closed.. yet. Three games in the World cup canny turn a dumpling into a star, unless he was playing alongside World cup stars, oh wait. It will b irrelevant anyway if we are put out of the qualifiers the morra, who needs a £12 mill. pound duffer anyway for the SPFL. The EPL have so much money they can spend billions and if some of that is spent unwisely, oh wait, it disny matter cos billions will be available next year. Take the money there are some good centre-backs about if you look closely.

Good CBs and the money to buy them were available last year and earlier this summer; selling Boyata’s not the reason we haven’t bought them.

Yeah, but now we aren’t selling him apparently, I can understand though that we should have been quicker out the blocks with regards to bringing in new, better quality players. My understanding was… to wait until the P.L. window closed on Thursday at 5-00 pm. and then try too p p pick up a bargain before the SPFL window closed at the very end of August.. time will tell. Still think he is mince tho. and apparently most others agree with me…

Wouldn’t be too sure that we’re not selling him but rather playing hardball to get another few mil out of Fulham.

wrt to opinions of him, you might be right that you’ve got quantity on your side but I’ve got the quality:

You can just feel Rodgers transfer palpitations, if he thought that the Liverpool transfer committee was difficult, he didn’t reckon on Lawwell. Petrie is a piece of work and McGinn is no Brown, so I’m not too upset that we might lose him, but Rodgers thinks otherwise and its his opinion that matters. When the Huns died and went belly-up, I could understand the reasons to be prudent, but not now, with the money that the club have raised. £100,000,000 mill. turn-over, there has never, ever been a better time to improve the team, I’m away fur a lye-doon in a dark room to read the beano, if you hear of any new players coming in, chap the windy.

If Celtic get offered anywhere NEAR £9 million for Dedryck Boyata they should grab it with both hands; don’t fuck about with sell-on clauses as his value will never get that high again. Take the money, even half of that mentioned, and FFS buy a real, seasoned CB as we DESPERATELY need one, or really two.

Well I note with some amusement that sevco have signed some Croatian player for 2.2 million ( nonsense price of course ). That said they must have paid something and it makes me wonder again about where their money is coming from? Will they be allowed tp pile up debts just like the old Rangers and end up liquidated just like the old club? What financial oversight do the SFA do here? Seems to me like they are spending yet they are in huge debt, the chairman is going to be given the cold shoulder and Ashley owns their merchandising. When does this basket case club crash?

Mike

Reply to  broxburnbhoy

Nonsense or not Broxburn but he is a good player, I watched him play for Osijek and he was their best player for miles. So, he joins a pair of centre-backs and a right back and now a left back alongside Declan John and the grass, a good goalkeeper, a good midfielder and 4/5 loanees. Now how does that chime with all the fines paid the players paid off, the running costs, wages etc. etc. Where is this money coming from? Close Brothers, TOP etc. etc. Something smells fishy, money is coming in from somewhere, Goldfish is going out of business, somethings just don’t add up, their demise has been forecast since the wright brothers first flew, sniff, sniff….

Iancelt67 – as the game’s only on Celtic TV, it’s advisable to check before making any arrangements.

As well as the Queen’s Head in Ilford that Jimmy mentioned (but check) and Celtic Bars (tweet would get more interactive response) you could also post a request in the following https://m.facebook.com/groups/londoncelticsupporters/

I’ll be watching the game in https://m.facebook.com/pages/Gertie-Brownes/154844314546113 but that’s probably out of your way.

I like to think we will be much more match fitter than aek. This will work in our favour at home.
We have to go after the jugular and look to win by 3 at home. I believe we can do it.
Boyata is rated by Brendan it is he who if the story is right has knocked back the 9 million at this time. Peter will be doing cartwheels.
Fair play to Brendan if he values a world cup semi finalist player at more than 9 million so be it. Too many times we have let them go on the cheap

McGinn is not an immediate requirement in our team if hibs get 4 million good enough and fair play to them.Henderson and Kouassi can play there.
McGinn wont shine playing for Villa.
We need all our top players for the qualifiers lets See what happens without worrying about what Boyata is worth. It’s not the players fault clubs want to pay that amount. He is one of our best central defenders.

He’s not a straight replacement for Broony.

Broony was an excellent attacking midfielder who took an appreciable time to become a defensive midfielder.

McGinn would need similar time and there’s no guarantee he has the adaptability, temperament etc to do it.

I wish people would stop assuming Broony’s role is a piece of piss and anyone can be adapted to fill it.

Listening to BR talking about the clubs transfer policy doesn’t make for good listening. He sounds like a frustrated manager.
We can’t match the money from England but surely if he wanted McGinn or any other reasonably priced target the board should have backed him. Why don’t we ever strengthen from a position when we’re on top. A disgrace.

Agree mate. I was going to make the points that Comrade Saiz did, that if, BR and NL rate him who the feck in their right mind would question their rating of a player who in my lowly opinion could do well for us. Of course BR isn’t some Demi-God and should face criticism when it’s due but looking at the trophy stats there’s not much room for a baseless critique. Clearly Europe is a different beast but I suspect he’s right about McGinn. I’ll keep my fingers still for now but if we don’t do some slight strengthening my cannons will be wheeled out. jimmybee

Let’s try and look at what Brendan said.
Armstrong for 7 million was good business
But we haven’t replaced him
Roberts back to his parent club we haven’t replaced him.
Not once has he said about our defence.
So he must be happy with Boyata and it must be him that is telling the board not for sale

Foe Peter would have came in his pants for 9 million for Boyata.
So Brendan rates him he also rates Hendry and Ajer and Jozo
So we have a defense that the manager is happy with. He isn’t happy that we havent bought McGinn yet when did he say this i haven’t seen it

If Brendan wanted McGinn it would be done. I have no doubt. Hibs could play all the silly buggers they wanted but like with Scott Alan if we wanted we would buy. I am.of the opinion that Henderson is a better prospect. I think we have a real talent here. McGinn would be ok but really i think he would end up like GMS that actually wee clubs are better for them.
Only my opinion.of course thank fuck says you

jimmybee

On the eve of Celtics most important game the media try to cause a crisis. A division in our support.
Whether you think McGinn or Boyata transfers should or shouldn’t happen doesnt matter.
What matters is that all our players who take the field tomorrow night deserve our support.
And the louder the better
Remember this folks.
Armstrong at 7 million is good business for a player in his last year of contract.
Why when no other club has made an offer would you say 4 million is good business you wouldn’t.
Brendan has made it clear that McGinn is a plays the would love at the club
McGinn has all the aces he is now cup tied in Europe so cant play anyway. If he really is a Celtic man then sit fuck Petrie and join in January it is his call. If he joins Villa then its for money only so be it. He has to look after his family.
Boyata 9 million being rejected is actually the big story.
It’s Brendan telling everyone we want to keep our best defenders. We are not a selling club as you believe we are but only if i agree.
HH

highseastim

I’ll be pissed off if we lose out on McGinn, a terrific player and the ideal replacement for Broony. Ok, he’s cup tied for Europe, but would be ideal to come into the team on the weekends after European games. An absolute howler being played by Celtic here.

jimmybee

I really believe Henderson is a better prospect than McGinn But i still believe McGinn will be at Celtic some time soon.

jimmybee

Let me ask this. Is McGinn crucial to winning the title this season if not then save the 4 million if you think he is spend it.
Me I don’t think he is save it.
Sevco will now throw everything they have to Gerrard. Failure to make europa league will be catastrophic failure to close on Celtic even worse.Next season will be the same again with even worse effects. Now I think that this is where we play shrewd. Yes we can spend but if we keep the squad together and introduce a couple next season even then we are on our way.
I believe that season 9 and 10 will be special i think big players will come for the history and the adulation. It isnt what we want of course not.
But so be it

I disagree with you Jimmybee, especially after seeing the look on Brendan’s face, he looks very disappointed not to have strengthened by now.
Lawwell has questions to answer!

Well they have thrown plenty at him, a better goalie, a better pair of centre-half’s, a better midfielder in Arfield, 4/5 loanee’s and now a better left back in Boran Barisic of Osijek. I watched him play the Huns in there last game and he was by far there star player. Flanagan another P.L. player. Declan John and the grass it now looks is surplus to requirements, so there is not much doubt about it, they are much better than last season. Am I concerned not so much and a big failing for them is that 1/2 injuries and it goes down hill quickly. Put that against all the fines, all the costs, the Close Brothers loan the TOP and all the rest of the guff, but at the end of the day like Hearts, Hibs, Kilmarnock, they have improved. So where is the money all coming from just season ticket sales, I’m not so sure, but as it gets nearer to 9….
Stabbings, rioting, bottles and coins getting thrown and this is just the start of the season.

No doubt Mike they have improved their squad is it good enough for second Celtic will answer that depending who we loan.our players too
McGinn holds the cards. To.me and it’s just my wee feeling that Brendan has said all he has too.
I want you here but Petrie is a cunt (he didnt say that ) Now you can demand to come you can sit and wait it out or you can join a championship side and miss out on your family’s name being mentioned rightfully so, when 9 and 10 in a row come around the choice is yours.

Know your enemy and don’t be blind to what they are about, indeed they are a bunch of shite, but you have to be aware of what they are up to. And they have strengthened no doubt about it. But they are no where near us.. yet, so don’t be complacent. Petrie is a cunt and Lawwell hates him and there is the dilemma, Lenny and Petrie, McGinn is caught in the middle, but Rodgers has spoken and not before time. Your right about McGinn tho. if he really is Celtic minded, he will make the right choice.

The Celtic board are letting Brendan down, they are not backing the man with serious ambition.
They are being complacent because of the success Brendan has achieved, as Brendan said himself, we don’t need a massive overhaul of players, just the three or four who will lift things to a new level.
Yesterday i seen a different side to Brendan, the driven, passionate side, he doesn’t want to sit still or the team to get stale.
We need to keep pushing on, we aren’t talking of £10m players, just BETTER than what is there in a FEW positions.
FUCKING FINGER OOT LAWWELL!

Some reports of Emilio Izaguirre returning on a one year deal…
Be nice to see the wee man again but i’d like to ask…again…what this Lee Congerton is doing at Celtic?
I’d be better at recruitment than this fucking clown!

Gregg’s for a medical 🙂
