Celtic Diary Friday August 3: To Eight In A Row!

The new league season starts tomorrow !

Image result for Celtic crowd cheering

It’s there for the taking-eight in a row.

Again, as of course some of us older guys have seen it all before, and truthfully, I don’t think any of us really thought we’d have the chance to see it again.

Celtic begin the season as overwhelming favourites, but there are others who are confident that their club-or company-can halt the juggernaut that is early 21st century Celtic..

Ladbrokes hail ‘ambitious’ punter after he backed Rangers to win Scottish Premiership in £1 coupon that stands to earn him whopping £600,000

The gambler placed the optimistic £1 flutter with Ladbrokes, picking the winners of the Premiership as well as England’s Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two.

Actually, I’ve worked out exactly how much he’s going to win..

Celtic have so far kept the bulk of last years team together, and they’re all a year wiser, a year fitter and a year stronger.

Main rivals aberdeen lack quality up front, as was revealed in their europa League tie against burnley last night, whilst Steven Gerrard may talk a good game, but his collection of loannees and bargain buys will need to play at a level consistently that their very appearance in a “rangers ” shirt proves in itself that they are incapable of.

If they were any good, they wouldn;t be at Ibrox.

Hibernian are a different kettle of fish altogether, still in Europe and possibly the biggest threat to eight in a row of the lot.

In contrast to the other challengers , they have a manager who knows what it takes to win, and if they can consolidate on their performances last year and add that consistency needed to sustain a challenge, they will be a threat.

If anyone can stop a “treble treble ” , it will be them.

Then there’s Kilmarnock, a massively improved side under Steve Clarke, maybe not as a challenge, but certainly as a team who can thwart other challengers…

When Rangers passed away in 2012, the hope was that other teams raised their game and improved.

They had to have the ambition to want to go out and have a realisitic chance of winning silverware, and a number of them have. Maybe not enough to win a league, but certainly a cup, and this season should be one of the most competitive in recent years.

The fact that three out of four sides remain in Europe when in recent years this has been unheard of shows the improvement, and had Aberdeen not come up against a side from one of the bigger and wealthier leagues this early, they too would have still been around.

Incidentally, , if Scots were to stop trying to compare their football with England, and concentrate on supporting and praising the positives in our game, we could get back to a respectable standing in Europe.

The English, and their media, are quick to draw comparisons, but in reality one league has billions of pounds and a market of over fifty million people, and the other has around a tenth of the population, and a mere fraction of the finance.

The English need to have someone to look down on, a mentality that goes back to old colonial days, so let them have their game, let them watch it eat itself, and we’ll enjoy what we have.

Yeah, lets enjoy what we have and believe me, what we have is the envy of those in the south… as its something they lost when they sold their souls to Sky…

Aberdeen. You are far and away the best set of fans to come to Turf Moor in years. Go win that league lads and I will be hoping for it all the way. As a league we may have the money, you still have the heart & voices. I rate that alot. Best of luck.

He’s probably too young to remember when Celtic played there, in the Anglo Scottish cup…

Image result for burnley v celtic 1978

Then again, maybe he isn’t…

Celtic face Livingston in the opener tomorrow, and the club are managed by a former Celt, Kenny Miller.

Miller will be remembered as one of Scotlands foremost strikers of recent year, and an honest pro.

One of Hibernians original golden generation-they didn’t win anything, its a reference to his skin colour-along with others who moved to bigger clubs at around the same time, Miller uniquely is the only man to have featured for Rangers, Celtic and “rangers “.

We should give him a big cheer, and maybe even a welcome home banner tomorrow, as although he has had his wayward moments, he’s still an ex Celt…

One former Celt who will be the centre of attention tomorrow is Danny McGrain..

He will unfurl the league flag before the match, and there won’t be a dry eye in the house.

Of all those who have attained the status of legend, Danny is one of a handful, perhaps along with James McGrory, Jock Stein, Sean Fallon, Billy McNeill and Paul McStay who are perhaps above and beyond legendary status.

An inspiration both on and off the field, and also one of the best players in his position in the world at his peak.

And a one club man.

but did he perhaps stay on too long ?

Image result for danny mcgrain

Danny is now involved on the coaching side, and has been for a while.

And may he continue to do for a long time yet.

When he was told that he’d be raising the flag, his response was fitting of a man who has always remained humble, and genuinely astonished at the affection and respect the support has for him…

“This is a wonderful honour for me and my family and I would like to thank the club for inviting me to unfurl the league flag before the game against Livingston.

“The day is all about the team of course, and their great achievement in winning the Premiership title last season, and it’s right that they should take centre-stage at Celtic Park along with the Celtic supporters.

“I congratulate the players, Brendan and our backroom team again for delivering such a memorable season last year and I am sure they will be doing everything they can to bring our fans even more success.

“The fans have always been brilliant to me since the day I joined the club, and I’m sure they will enjoy the Flag Day celebrations before the team kick off the campaign to win the title again this season.

“There are many great figures in Celtic’s history who would deserve to be invited to unfurl the flag, so I’m both honoured and humbled that the club has asked me to do so.

“It’s something that my family and I are looking forward to, although we’re all looking forward more to supporting the team and the club in the season ahead.”

No, not quite, Danny..

It’s about you, and its about us getting a chance to say thank you. For everything.

You’ve more than earned it.

Whilst the support will show their affection the only way they know how, the manager added his as well…

There’s not too many more fitting than Danny McGrain.

“He’s one of the few players that supporters and everyone really identify with.

“Certainly in my time growing up as a Celtic supporter, he was a role model for Celtic fans.

“It’s a great honour for him, but it’s also a great honour for us on the opening day that he’ll lead us out and unfurl the flag.

“He’s a very important figure for the club.

“What happens sometimes is that more experienced players get lost to the game but Danny’s words, wisdom, I will always try to share.

“It’s important I see Danny when he is around the club as he will always give you a story or anecdote and I just try to use it in my own thinking and relate it to something.

“He’s got great experience and from a personal perspective, I always learn from him every time I speak with him.

There’s a video of Rodgers being interviewed where he tells the story of meeting Danny McGrain for the first time after he took over from Ronny Deila.

If anyone knows how to embed it please put it in the replies, its phenomenal.

It may be that with next weeks qualifier against AEK Athens already looking on the horizon, that the manager chooses to rest a few players.

The first four qualifiers have been tough, whether due to the travel, the tension or the torrid night on Wednesday last.

Torrid. They really do make me laugh.

Celtic won the tie, and perhaps a few more pragmatic approaches like that  in the qualifiers and we could see the end of those humiliating defeats that have clouded some excellent efforts over the last two years.

It’s a results business, and defending is also part of football, as is tactical astuteness.

We’re still learning at this level, and maybe the Rosenberg game is a turning point in our attitude to these fixtures…

Back to tomorrow, and Scott Brown may well make way, and even if he does start, expect him to be substituted after an hour or so.

Other key players needed perhaps more for the European stage may also sit this one out, such as James Forrest, who picked up a knock in midweek, Oddsone Edouard, who may give way to allow Leigh Griffiths some much needed game time, and Keiran Tierney, who is looking at a house in Liverpool..

No, I’m not letting it go.

Not until august 10, when if the bhoy wonder is still with us, I will let out a cheer so loud that fishermen on the Yangtzee river will dive into the water after shouting “what the fuck was that ? ”

If I’m wrong I’ll accept that, and be happy about it.

Some people, though, are too stubborn to admit they’re wrong. some people can be really hypocritical..

The pope , for instance, has recently condemned the death sentence, conveniently forgetting that without it he and his predecessors wouldn’t have had a job.

It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for the Etims

Knob of the Week

to be unveiled.

This time, its not just a person, its a person, of whom i do not know the identity, and a company, who issued this tweet earlier in the week..

🇬🇷Athens update: Unfortunately, due to the high cost of securing an aircraft to Greece at this time of year, an Official Fan Charter in partnership with is not a viable option for the fixture v AEK Athens.

The person who decided to use Nirvana europe, and nirvana europe themselves, share the title of Etims

Knob of the Week .

Seriously, there’s a shortage of planes ?

Presumably no one is flying to Greece at all, then, because of the prohibitive costs ?

On other matters, continuing on from our correspondence, you will note that a certain player will miss the AEK games, with his recurring injury but BR seems to have a dig at Super Leigh regarding his fitness…..strange,isn’t it?..

You say that, I say different, I gave a lengthy reply about the good that the Catholic church has given mankind. 1.5 billion members world wide, human beings are imperfect, but when you see my post, you will be reminded of all that easy target Catholic church has given to the whole of mankind. Frankie Boyle is a cunt I don’t think I would be quoting him in any argument about abuse, Dave Allen had one finger missing wonder where it is….

Short version; Education and university, Earth and Nature, Philosophy and Theology, Art and Astronomy Architecture, Law and Jurisprudence. It is acknowledged throughout the world that the Catholic church has made a huge contribution towards the whole of Western civilisation, every Sunday that 1.5 billion people through the collection plate donate millions of pounds to the poor. Even our own club started by a Catholic clergyman, our supporters and its foundation continue with its Catholic heritage.

An American Jewish business man wrote this…
The Catholic church educates 2.6 million students every year in the U.S. at a cost to the church of 10 billion dollars and a saving to the U.S. taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. 92% of students graduate. The Catholic church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with 700,000 students. The Catholic church has 637 non profit hospitals, they treat 1 in 5 people not only Catholics in the U.S. today. AA thing you will never read, The protestant clergy has admitted that 38% indulge in inappropriate behaviour compared to 2% of Catholic clergy, funny you never hear about that, you might think that they have an agenda.

Suddenly, the goalposts are moved, from spurious tales of golden treasure buried in the Vatican vaults to tales now of the Vatican bank and daylight robbery,
It was the mafia, or the cardinals wot done it, as Harry Potter stories are thought up and discarded. No mention I see or reply the World Wide charitable works that the Catholic church undertakes, oh no, only fabricated tales from the crypts. Perhaps one day those who hate the church will take the time to study the good it does for the poor, oor ain brother Walfrid and the legacy he left our club and its thousands of great supporters, until then, carry on with tawdry tales.. spouting pish..

If my lengthy post ever arrives you will see the many many things that the Catholic church, its celebrants and the 1.5 billion members do for the poor and for Western civilisation. Yes there has been wrongs committed by a small minority of clergy, but when you look at the bigger picture like.. Education, Architecture, Astrology, Physics, Medicine, Art, its continuing contribution to Western civilisation is immense including our club and its support, its foundation, in 60 years I have never witnessed any rumours of wrongdoing by the clergy and neither has any of my friends or family, all that was ever preached was love for others, Western media hate the church and it remains a very easy target.

Mike, yer getting a bit angry over people’s opinions on religion. Non believers have the right to express their opinions on these matters as you have on other people’s belief systems. When the priest got attacked at St Alphonsus chapel a while back I sent an email to GCC outlining that it was an absolute disgrace that what had occurred. I received an email back from a guy called Gordon Fulton who was dealing with the complaints and he told me in his response that I was the first person to make a complaint. I’ve been sitting with Muslim hunger strikers for the past 2 days down at Brand St in Govan. I also write to people who were persecuted during the Arab Spring for being nothing more than Coptic Christians, for their religious beliefs. I don’t need anyone trying to have a go at me about my opinions on religion when I show total solidarity with people of many faiths. In fact, probably more than most people do.

Mike, unfortunately I don’t have the time nor can be arsed trying to explain my position as many don’t quite get it. HH

Your not alone in sending an e-mail to GCC, I also sent one and also got a reply too and another to my MSP. But you never made an opinion about religion, you said ” Your a bit low in your estimate about what’s in the vaults, its in the billions”. Look I don’t give a fuck about other peoples opinions, when they state true facts about religion, but what you said was rubbish, absolute rubbish. Out of the four of us who commented I am the only one who has been to the Vatican and its underground vaults, I KNOW what I saw, the billions that others allure to is what the church raises and GIVES to the poor of this World. I admire the good work that you do, I do, but please, your more intelligent than to spout about a church you do not attend or know the true facts about, its not perfect by any means, but it does a hell of a lot of good, much more than people appreciate or acknowledge.

Here is some of the things that the Catholic church the largest Christian church in the world has given to mankind.
The Gregorian calendar, modern cosmology (the big bang) was invented by the church. Modern education and the university system. Catholic education has taught billions of people throughout the centuries, even recently an American atheist donated millions to it because he knew that it had contributed so much towards Western civilisation. Catholic earth and nature, philosophy, theology, art, architecture, law and judisprudence, health. Even our own club was started by a Catholic clergyman, why do you think that the foundation and the support donate so much for good causes? because of our Catholic heritage. Every Sunday Catholic churches throughout the World collect and donate millions of pounds, In many many years of attending the church, all I ever heard or witnessed was, do all you can for the poor and love, love for everyone. 1.5 billion, some bright, clever intelligent and some not so, but all taught the same message love and goodwill to others.

The pope remark is only a light hearted comment that’s not meant to offend anyone on here. I’m sure Ralph knows that many people on here are of a certain faith and to include something that might seem derogatory would be an error of judgement on his behalf. Although he’s a man who is the figurehead/representative for an organised religious grouping he’s still just that, a man, not some supernatural deity up in the sky. (incoming) lol

On the footballing front, are the reports regarding Dembele correct?

Kenny Miller, he is what he is and we’ll easily turn Livingston over this Saturday.

The joke about Pope Francis is a joke! That’s the first thing.
Secondly, it’s not really offensive to anyone. It’s a reference to the fact the Christianity is based on the crucifixion of Jesus, and obviously his subsequent resurrection. I don’t think Ralph actually believes Pope Francis is a hypocrite for not taking that as a justification for capital punishment. Please don’t be so sensitive. I’m sure Pope Francis would be happy to be out of a job as that would mean that everyone was already good all by themselves without him.

Straight off the bat, there’s no place for violence at football matches, it’s Neanderthals behaviour. I’ve read that it was two Croatian fans that were plugged at the WilliamDome and I wonder if a statement will come from them regarding this? One thing for sure, I wouldn’t fancy being a Sevconian going abroad in Europe if they draw a Croatian team further down the line. I also suspect that other ultras that go there will make sure that they have large numbers to prevent this happening again. Looking at the Hadjuk Split fans Twitter feeds, they’re not happy. What is it with that mob, two games and you have all sorts of madness. Will FARE include this in their report as they were at the BigotDome for the game?

The thing is with the quality street gang they were given time to develop. League cup sections loaned out brought in gently. Yet we expect players like Hendry to be champions league we need to give them time. Is it the thought of defeat or not reaching champions league that is now on the mindset of our support. Should we just at times accept you know what those guys need to learn Ajer Hendry etc. Brendan has been magnificent in the transformation of some of the players under previous managers.
Are we stronger i think so we are better than we have been at this stage of the season for as long as I can remember.
Yes we would all love that big signing to say we can buy players but give me young Hendry any day if he can be nurtured and allowes his wee lapses.
This young Celtic squad has potential let them breathe and flourish.

Danny McGrain was also living proof of why the auld Huns shot themselves in the foot. Someone at Ibrox said they thought his name “sounded Catholic” and so they didn’t pursue him! Stupid, stupid Huns. Celtic’s inclusive hiring at the time (Big Jock, King Kenny, Danny, etc)gave us an advantage that we have enjoyed ever since—and rightly so. I know a lot of Protestants who support Celtic because we were/are inclusive.
Danny was the greatest right back in Europe and one of the all time greats internationally.

I know most folk in the diary want to talk about football not politics or religion but you should avoid falling
into anti Catholic myths propagated by those who hate Celtic, the Irish and catholics. The church especially in Ireland the US and Australia is rightly condemned not so much for abuse, paedophilies will integrate themselves where they feel they
will have access to possible victims, the Churchs, Scouts, boys clubs, schools etc. What the Church should be condemned for is the cover up, the moving of guilty predators around and the naivety in believing those perpetrators who claimed to have vocations their crimevwssva “ one off”and fooled supposedly clever bishops.
Anyway enough of that, back to the League tomorrow, interesting call Ralph, Kenny Miller as one of our own but Danny the legend, brilliant. I hope Leigh and Rogic get game time against Luvvy, Lustig and Boyata too.

What you say is true, but remember the 98% of Catholic clergy that are people of faith and who only preach love, remember the great works that the Catholic church does for the poor of this World and remember it was a Catholic clergyman who gave us our great club, his legacy lives on in the good works our support carries out Catholic and non Catholic and with the clubs foundation, yes his legacy lives on. As for Kenny Miller his team will get tanned..

Please avoid conflating fair criticism of an institution that has had many shameful episodes many admitted and apologized for as well as many covered up with being some kind of anti Irish anti catholic bigot. The two are not the same. The bigots in Scotland have very little idea of the history of the Catholic Church most of their hate is based in ignorance and racism as well as their extreme version of Protestantism. Now on the other hand the church does a lot of good too often unmentioned. Let’s not pretend it’s perfect.

BJF, I found that interesting from Ralph saying Miller was one of us. For me, he isn’t. I know the circumstances were different with Judas but does that make him one of us too?

NoelSkytrot, Judas probably was one of us but rubbish in the air.

People are imperfect, but don’t judge everyone to be the same, people do many bad things, but they also do some wonderful things. Now you have moved the goalposts again, away from the Vatican and your fairy stories of vaults stuffed full of cash or the 2% of bad clergy, you rant and rave but its always based on assumptions, but you never acknowledge the great things that the church has done and will continue to do. So you carry on with your one sided critique, the church still will be the one constant doing good things for the poor of this world and without broadcasting it.

You should’ve added ‘hovis” and “real butta” in the narrative

Well the Italians sided with the Nazis. I think it was in their best interest to stay alive at the Vatican. Only until they got Mussolini did the change colours

In a most brutal manner, CS. Read Paul Preston’s book- the Spanish Holocaust and you’ll know exactly what horrific atrocities went down on both sides in the conflict . It’s hard reading too be honest.

Think it’s the Vatican’s policy to be neutral. I’m not sure about Franco sure where there’s billions of pounds or lire or euro involved Ty here’s dodgy characters everywhere.

“Jock, if there were two players, one Catholic and one Protestant. Who would you sign?”
“The Protestant”
“Why?”
“Because I know that Rangers would never sign the Catholic.”

Have a Grand day Ghirls and Bhoys.

Brother Walfrid the Catholic clergyman who gave us this wonderful club, Glasgow Celtic, one club, open to all, its legacy continues with the many, many great supporters who continue his great works of donating to the poor and the unfortunate, founded in a Catholic church his legacy will live on.

First of all, I was delighted with the result that we achieved against Rosenborg last Wednesday night. Immediately after the game a few of us shared our feelings and impressions where there was a consensus of praise for the result itself as well as the effort and resolve that helped us achieve it. So far so good. There were also a few critical comments made by myself and one or two others regarding the quality of play which, I feel, was fair enough taking into account that they were made in hot blood immediately after viewing the game. Unfortunately there was a comment made by someone the following day telling those of us who moan to ‘fuck off and support another team’. Well, what can you say to that? Utter fucking bollocks!! Everyone is free to express their opinion and being critical about aspects of the team’s performance is what football debate is all about. We call it as we see it and we may be right at any time or not. We give both praise and criticism when it’s due and we should welcome other reasonable, balanced responses, even when they don’t coincide with our own ideas. But this notion of banishing those who criticise? What a fucked up thing to say to fellow Celtic fans! I was speechless when I read it. I fully appreciate how important it is to get behind the team and I also understand how irritating it might be to read comments from an individual who incessantly talks the team or the club down but this? Get a grip FFS. Okay, I’ve got that out of my system. By the way, this is in no way intended to be an attack on the person who posted that comment the other day, it’s an attack on the comment itself.

Greatly looking forward to our league opener against Livi. A wonderful touch to have our very own legendary Danny McGrain do the honours. What a wonderful player and person he was/is and he’d be an automatic choice in every Celtic fan’s best ever XI. I remember a video I saw some years ago in which one of his ex-teammates described how Danny, when he was a player, used to sit up against a wall without any support to build up those huge thigh muscles.

Today should be fun as we take on a team of newcomers. It’ll be interesting to see if Jozo is selected to give him the chance to resume his personal duel with Kenny Miller. I think Hendry probably deserves the nod though, as he did well the other night and is improving. I hope Broonie, KT and wee Jamesie are all ok but there’s a pretty good chance that Brendan will rest one or two players. We’ve played some great stuff at CP already in European competition and against Standard Liege so I expect that trend to continue today.

Gordon

Lustig Hendry Ajer Tierney

Kouassi Ntcham

Johnston Rogic McGregor

Edouard

Bench: Bain, Gamboa, Simunovic, Brown, Forrest, Christie, Griffiths

Prediction: 3-0 Celts (Eouard (2), McGregor)

On my way home from a strange house this morning. Found an Evening Times on the bus and reading their take on Scotland’s Shame’s most recent disgrace you’d think it was the Croats’ fault they got stabbed. In-feckin-credible! Seems “police failed to take the violent reputation of Croatian fans seriously, resulting in two stabbings”??? It goes on to quote Chief Inspector Williamson: “Thankfully the issues we experienced on Thursday night are uncommon.” and ” It was unprecedented . . .”. The very next paragraph begins “The disturbance was the second to take place within a week involving Rangers fans.” but it seems Wigan fans were culpable for that too as it was “thought to involve mainly Wigan supporters.” I swear I’m no making this up. If you can stomach it read today’s Times. The article finishes: “A spokesman for Police Scotland commented:”There was no intelligence to suggest any disorder would occur at this game and the police planning and preparation reflected that.” Whit?!?!? I’d say “no intelligence” is just about spot on. The game was at Ibrox; they knew there’d be at least one Paris Bun in attendance; and they didn’t foresee any violence? Is it just me?
