Celtic Diary Monday July 16: A Busy Week At The Ranch

First of all, congratulations to France, worthy winners of the world cup despite being without three of their best players, who opted out of the squad to continue their development at Celtic Park. ( are you sure ? -Ed )

Thats what I heard. But to be fair the voice was speaking from inside my head when it said it.

Mind you, that voice was also saying…

and it gave me a chuckle when it told me about this..

Despite that revealing statistic, somehow England manager Gareth Southgate has been praised..

Anyhoo, around twenty thousand fans got forty five minutes of watching the new strike duo of Oddsone Edouard and Moussa Dembele lay the foundations of what could be one of the truly great Celtic partnerships as Standard Liege were swept aside in the first half.

With another line up taking the field for the second half, the game finished 4-1, and those in attendance were more than pleased with what they saw.

Right now, we can hope that Moussa wants to hang around for a while yet, and if he is to be the next man to sign a contract extension, it will be money well spent.

There have been rumblings on social media claiming that yet again , Celtic have refused to prise open the biscuit tin, with a demand for new faces almost hysterical in some quarters.

Apparently, Edoaurd at £9m, a new deal for Tom Rogic-which would have cost well into seven figures, just for his signing on fee, and talks going on with the likes of Leigh Griffiths and Dedryck Boyata aren’t enough.

Keeping the team together as it develops is more important than buying players for the sake of buying them.

There should finally be movement along the M8 this week, with Rod Petrie beginning to realise that the hand he was playing isn’t as good as the one he’s been playing against over John McGinn.

Scott Allan is certain to go the other way permanently, and either Ryan Christie or Mikey Johnston -or both-could end up on loan at Easter road in return.

Johnston , certainly, has indicated he wouldn’t mind going out on loan..

I’m a Celtic fan, so I want to be here as long as possible and break into the first team. If this isn’t my year, then I’ll need to go somewhere else to play. I’ll see what the gaffer thinks. But I train every day with guys who came through the ranks – players such as Kieran Tierney, Callum McGregor and James Forrest – and they’re always giving me advice.

Over the weekend, manager Brendan Rodgers spoke about the desired levels of fitness within the squad, and appeared to lay down the law about what was required..

“There’s no hiding place for players and they know that if they come in two-and-a-half kilos over their best weight, they won’t train with the squad.

“It’s very simple. That means they have to keep an eye on how they come back for pre-season. And we have players who have come back having lost kilos and are in a really good condition.

“In order to play with intensity and aggression, you have to be super-fit nowadays. Science in the British game has definitely improved over the years.

For those who go out on loan, that could be very bad news, as other clubs do not train at the same intensity, and it may be this is the reason for the talks this week between the manager and the likes of Christie and Allan, who he may feel are not at the level he is demanding for this season.

The training methods don’t please everyone at the club, but with the performances against Alashkert and Standard Liege showing that they are working, bearing in mind the fact that its still only mid July, there is a convincing argument that they are working.

During the world Cup, did anyone notice this guy ?

Celtic are interested in signing Iranian World Cup star Milad Mohammadi this summer, a left-back currently contracted to Russian Premier League side Akhmat Grozny.

 Let me remind you..
Image result for milad mohammadi
He’s on the radar as back up for Keiran Tierney.
Read into that what you will.
Image result for Armstrong okoflex
Armstrong Okoflex, another one of those superkids, has joined Celtic from Arsenal, where he had turned down a contract , preferring to entrust his future to the Celtic coaching staff, and though the club may have played this down a bit, its another sign that youngsters who want to learn rather than earn are flocking north…
The Dublin born winger is very highly rated down south, and has quite possibly the coolest name of any player to join Celtic in my lifetime.
There could be another one soon as well…
The new lights are in place, the new pitch is ready to go, and we hear Celtic TV will be running a trail of the VAR system used at the World Cup…
Maybe we should get some professionals in to do the job… Celtic TV needs to be back on the Sky platform, the web version isn’t working. Literally, in most cases.
Thanks to Northern Soul on twitter for that exclusive.
Over at the SFA, there’s been a bit of panic after the Compliance Officer was challenged over the jiggery pokery around the dates of his inquiry into the issuing of a licence to old Rangers back in 2011..
So much so, we believe, that its more or less impossible for him to return any other verdict than the one he should…
Anyone who thinks the intimidation aimed at Tony MacGlennan is purely because he has business dealings with Celtic’s major shareholders may want to have a rethink.
Its because those being investigated are fully aware that there is no way out, and all that remains now is to find a scapegoat in their own ranks and hope that he’s happy enough to have his lodge membership suspended until the fuss dies down.
Phil MacGhiollabhan hinted that the evidence is a “slam dunk “, but whether or not thats because he has inside information, which isn’t unlikely, or just because he’s seen the evidence in full, as a number of us have, is debatable, and he seems to think that the decision we have all waited for isn’t too far away.
And this is just the start of it.
The correct decision in this case will open up a path that may ultimately lead to the dissolution of the SFA, and a refreshingly open and honest game in Scotland, which at one time seemed virtually impossible.
We’ll just keep chipping away persistently, and break down the walls of resistance…
As I’ve said before, we haven’t gone away.
Image result for persistence beats resistance
I may have more details later on the ins and outs of this…
This weekend, a more peaceful march took place in Glasgow than you’d usually see on the city streets, one that sent out a message of unity, friendship and tolerance.
And no one spat at any priests.

🏳️‍🌈One Club open to all since 1888. Happy weekend Glasgow!

Somehow, some Celtic fans were offended by this message from our club, and frankly, thats unfathomable.

Those who did need to take a look at themselves.

Open to all means open to all.

Image result for nacho novo rangers

Well, nearly all.

On the subject of marching, there is a well balanced and sensible article in the Herald by Jeanete Findlay, who has brought reason and common sense into the debate..

Jeanete Findlay article.

Meanwhile, on the subject of bigoted orange bastards, Donald Trump , the man who somehow became the president of the United States, was visiting Britain over the weekend.
Protesters launched a big orange balloon full of hot air as a protest.
But there was one who is beginning to see things from a different perspective, as many do when they’ve had a day out at Celtic Park.
She’s been invited to unfurl  the league flag for ten in a row, you know.
Thats why we’ve all those new lights fitted.
We have to go back to Friday for the last caption competition…

Awesome Edward cost £4-5m, everyone else was already here and we’ve lost Armstrong and Roberts (it’s not all bad news as we’ve lost Cifti as well 😉 ).

That’s good enough to win the league and perhaps a Treble Treble (their faces are a mess) and we’ll be well on the way to a fabled 10.

What it isn’t is good enough to kick on in Europe because although the team will develop so will all our rivals.

Is this good enough (personally I think we can do a hell of a lot better)?

Had the most surreal experience last night. Sitting watching the match down here in the south of France with a woman in her eighties on one side and a wee dog on the other. Once the match finished they all fucked off without watching the trophy presentation. First time I’ve wanted a team in red, white and blue to win a match. Must be the sun.

The Cha, I agree about the team as it stands but we do need a wee bit of luck in the draw if we get to the group stages. C Gunn cup tied for the Europa though is he not?

The Cha

Reply to  Steve Naive

If it’s Europa we’re aiming for (and I agree) then the only luck we need is in the Pot 3 team, as it’ll be between us and them for 3rd.

Although we got PSG and Bayern, we got lucky getting an out of sorts (at least over there) Anderlecht, which helped our EL chances.

McGinn didn’t play for Hibs last week so he’s not cup-tied yet but even if we did sign him, surely it’d be a few weeks before he was considered for Europe?

re Rodgers comments on players fitness; what was missed out was that he said that the most unfit player was in better shape than the most fit player under Deila.

Another indicator of the top class manager we now have who simply states the facts rather than his predecessor who banged on about how fit the players were when we could see them dying on their arses after 70 mins and were ridiculed by the manger of Malmo (nb not Madrid) for their lack of fitness.

An important point to remember when Rodgers eventually leaves that we need to keep to the same high standard for a successor and not downscale back to the future with a Deila, Lennon etc.

Aye it wis, but relative to all that say “we need more signings” I agree, but there is not enough merit put on players training and playing together.. often, a settled side has its own merits. Every team needs to be refreshed but its so easy to forget the great players that we have. Three great strikers, great midfielders and lets not forget Deila bringing in Calmac who is turning into a great player, Rogic Forrest who many had written off and has also answered his critics. A right back as cover for Lustig, or Ralston, the team needs one or two max. We have a great manager and he will need no motivation with Gerrard at Sevco.

I’m not trying to defend him, Calmac exceeded my expectations as a player, I hold my hand up to that. Rodgers is a BIG upgrade, Delia was the reason that we got Rodgers. As for buying players like Commper Gamboa, etc. this isny new, for every great player we have brought in, three have been mince, there’s no excuses for that, none.
But all supporters have got different views on players, who they think is good, who’s not. But for me a rb and one centre-back, a good one would do. But overall last year with no striker against Rosenborg this year we have three really great ones and the squad for me is much, much better. A settled side is a better side.

I’m not convinced.

The next level I’m talking about is the likes of Zenit, Moon (I mean Munch (I mean A German team))), not the likes of Molde, Malmo and Maribor that I’d confidently expect to beat these days.

Unless we can compete against the former then it’s, at best, Europa League knock out 1st round and out.

To do that, I think, we need to raise the quality in the team and the last 2 seasons hasn’t convinced that the players that are there, can do that.

Mike
Reply to  The Cha

Can we, will we ever be able to beat these German teams, not so sure giving the resources they have. The goal posts have moved too far mibbee. But if you think individually about the currant players, its not as if we need eleven newer, better players, but its hard enough keeping what we have and then expanding and with this board, not a chance in hell, unless that is, the club moves on to newer, richer greener pastures, never say never, its the curse of the Celtic supporter… expectations, we always live in hope.

I ask myself this… Imagine you supported another smaller SPFL club, I know, you might think that a successful season was a top six finish or a run in one of the cups, perhaps even a cup itself. Are WE the real supporters? Of course you support the team of your heart, but the supporter who goes to watch HIS team every week are they not the real supporters?

jazzerbhoy

Mike every football fan dreams of better things.
The wee guy who goes to watch Peterhead or East Stirling dream of a cup run one game against the big boys or a promotion makes your season. We haven’t always been in the position we are in as you know only too well.
I remember going to watch us against Clydebank one of the last games of the season we had another dire season, but a victory to finish off the season was all we wanted I think there was under 3,000 at it if memory serves. Yes the guy who goes every week is the true supporter, home or away, is it any different for a wee team to being a Celtic supporter for me no it’s exactly the same,we go out that door with hope in our heart and that today will be our day. That’s all you hope for.

Mike

Reply to  The Cha

Absolutely Jazzerbhoy, its why we love football, its lows make us long for the good times and with the good times, sometimes we don’t appreciate them as much as we should. How can you not follow the team of your heart, you follow it with passion, defeat is a stab at your heart, a win makes you happy, your smile is big. I still remember big Jock coming back to Celtic, I watched his career flourish at Dunfermline and Hibs and longed for him to return to us, to his club. As the years went past, success, more success and then you expected success, it was like now the expectation of success. I take my hat of to you for following the Celtic through the good and the bad times, the mark of a true Celtic supporter, not everyone did as you did and I admire you for that and the supporters of all the wee clubs for having hope in their hearts. Celtic supporters do and give so much to Scottish football and to many good causes, in so many different ways, its one of the many reasons that I love our great club.

You are perfectly free to disagree with anything. Remember some other churches preach that being a Catholic is a sin! You are entitles to your opinion and the Church to its interpretation, I respect you disagree and I think the Church is completely wrong trying to classify gay people as sinful. Well done for this respect.
The France forward has not disappointed Paris Saint-Germain after they signed him to the national team in 2017 for £166 million. Mbappé’s memorable four goals in seven World Cup games not only helped France to their huge international victory but also made him the second-youngest player to score a goal at the World Cup (the youngest player to score a World Cup goal is Brazilian soccer legend Pelé).

Now, the 19-year-old is planning to help hospitalized and disabled children have the chance to play by donating all of his World Cup earnings to the charity Premiers de Cordée, which provides free sports instruction for children with disabilities, according to the French news outlet L’Equipe. Mbappé, who has been supporting the association since 2017, felt that his World Cup winnings were better served helping a humanitarian cause, according to L’Equipe.

Good luck with Boris or Rees Mogg running Scotland. Corbyn? He didn’t even know we have a separate legal system in Scotland! He doesn’t get out from his London allotment very much. Many of his best pals send their kids to private schools.
Abolish the Monarchy.
Abolish the House of Lords.
Reform the voting system.
End tax evasion of the rich.
Give equal rights to all regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or sexual preference.
Here’s to the Rainbow Celtic family.
C’mon the Celtic. Hail, hail…
Peace and good health to all on this site…above all, good health.

The oil will last forever. I’m sick of hearing otherwise. At some point it will simply be too uneconomical to extract. Hopefully we’ll have started making things from it by that point, instead of burning it.

Why to gay men have to speak with that polite, soft, lispy thing they do?
Is that in the gay manual.
One of these things was on the Scottish news last night complaining of not getting into the parade, he must have said ” i was like, i was like ” four times in thirty seconds, while gently touching his chest?

Ahh, Monti you are a big brave Fenian and I think you do have great courage and like me, support The Celtic with true heart. However, I think your anti-gay stuff lets you down big time. The real test is when someone who doesn’t like gay people has a brother, sister, child or grandchild who is gay. What you find is that you’ll love the person regardless. Being gay or straight does not make us who we are. Kindness. Courage. Justice. Compassion do.
As Irish Catholics we have hated being persecuted and treated as third class citizens for decades. How must gay people feel?
Now, to the fitba.
Tomorrow night:
Gordon
Hendry/Ajer/Tierney
Forrest/Brown/Ntcham/Kouassi/McGregor
Edouard/Dembele
If we can settle the tie early, then we need to get Christie, Morgan, and Sinclair some game time.
Probably 3-0 to the bhoys.
C’mon the Celtic. Off to the second round.
But Champion’s League my arse, how can a fourth place team be a Champion?

Devoy,
No matter how unpopular or ‘ in the minority ‘ my view on homosexuality is, i stand by my belief & more importantly, my church’s stance on the PHYSICAL ACTS , of homosexuality are.

I wish no person ill but i feel there is a pressure applied on people who do not accept homosexuality….well they can fuck right off, i’ll follow my church, my Priests and my personal view.

Same sex marriages, killing babies, legalising abortion?
The world is fucking nuts!

The Devil is winning the war!

Monti, I understand your point of view but our chuch has been protecting and harbouring vicious paedophiles for years. The gay people I know are not paedophiles.
Charlie Saiz: Nationalism (for small nations) was good enough for Ho Chi Minh, Lenin, Mahatma Gandhi, James Connolly and John Maclean. (and Pope John XXIII
“All nationalist movements are progressive when they are non-imperialist…” V.I. Lenin, “Marxism and Proudhonism on the National Question.”
“Semi-colonial countries must demand national liberation for their people.” V.I. Lenin
Scotland is still a colonial country. Independence would give us a chance to escape from British Nationalism. In our modern era, no nation as small as Scotland could be anything other than a Norway, a Croatia, a Denmark, an Ireland. None of those nationas are causing mayhem like the natinalism of Russia, China, America and yes, England with all its Brexiteers. I also think that the Commonwealth is just the old Empire in a watered down version. The Disunited Kingdom is the Empire in action: House of Lords, Titles, the Monarchy. Pretty hard to justify all that anti-democratic stuff Charlie. At least our own wee Parliament has a decent voting system.
Anyway, what we do have in common is The Celtic.
Hey, is McGinn coming or no?
