Celtic Diary Saturday July 7: The Manager Hath Spoken

Manager Brendan Rodgers has been talking to the media.

On the clubs efforts to finally bring in John McGinn…

I just wait to see what happens between the clubs, really.

“That will be organised, hopefully, between the two clubs – and, hopefully, we have another player.”

The two CEOs , that is. They’re not the best of pals, as we know.

On further squad strengthening;

“We need to strengthen. We have a core squad that’s very strong and we want to add to that.

“But I don’t need to add guys who will be on the bench. I want guys who can come in and affect the team.

If you don’t count John McGinn-or do you ? Those injury stories haven’t gone away…

“It’s going to take a bit of time and negotiation.

“To improve, the reality is that there has to be investment. We can’t deny that, but the players here have developed very well, players who have been fantastic for two years.

“To bring someone in who is ahead of them is going to take money.”

Well, we’ll have to dig out the cash card and draw some more out then..

On the fans, after Aberdeens Shay Logan, a sort of Neymar without the talent, accused supporters of racist abuse..

But the Celtic supporters were voted the best supporters in the world (FIFA poll). That says it all in terms of the ambiance at the stadium and how they behave themselves.

“It’s not something the Celtic supporters are ever renowned for. It’s a wonderful atmosphere at Celtic Park.”

One wonders if Logan, who has form for this sort of nonsense, had to be talked out of accusing Boyata of racism..

And finally, the manager, at last, on Keiran Tierney..

“Kieran has been absolutely brilliant, as per normal.

“He’s totally focused and, thankfully, he’s at a club he loves. There has been no change in Kieran.”

So, we can now say that there hasn’t been a bid for him, a bid that was accepted and put to him in the expectation that he would turn it down, and when he didn’t,  a frantic “lets blame the messenger” campaign when the story got out.

“Okay, I’ll buy that”, he said, visibly putting his money back in his pocket.

If only all rumours were dealt with as swiftly as the one linking Leigh Griffiths with a move to Turkey …when the striker was asked, via twitter, if it was true….

All of which  means we can concentrate fully on the game in Armenia next week, and there’s a wee practice this afternoon over in Dublin, where Celtic face Shamrock Rovers.

Image result for shamrock rovers

Shamrock drew 0-0 at Cork yesterday in the league.

Cork City and Shamrock Rovers played out a 0-0 draw tonight in the Airtricity League in what was another star showing for 16-year-old keeper Gavin Bazunu.

Incredibly, the youngster kept his fourth clean sheet in a row for Stephen Bradley’s side. That included an excellent penalty save. The result is a frustrating one for Cork City as Dundalk extended their lead at the top of the table.

The keeper saved a penalty, and is interesting Liverpool.

In Ireland , of course, they don’t wait for the bad weather to play their football, and then on Thursday they face AIK Stockholm in the Europa League.

It’ll be a nice little kick about for everyone, and probably more of a day out for fans than anything else.

Celtic will probably practice shape and positioning more than anything else, and just concentrate on making friends, and presumably leaving a contact number with that goalie..

A nice , uneventful game, no injuries, no stories and plenty of relaxation.

The manager explained how it will work;

We had a great time here last year in terms of how we were received when we came over here for the game and we’re really looking forward to that again,”

“We’re still building minutes and fitness at this stage. Tomorrow, it’ll be a team that will play 60 to 70 minutes of the game and then we’ll look to make some changes.

“This is another step towards our match fitness. We have to work your players towards full fitness very, very quickly, especially when you have qualifiers. We had a really good week in Lennoxtown and followed that up with a great preparation week in Austria.”

“At this stage of pre-season the players will never be 100 per cent,”

“I’ve been really impressed with how fit the players have come back. That’s what the toplevel modern players should be doing, coming back with a really high level of fitness. We’ll look to push that and extend that over the early part of the season.

“As much as we can, we’ve had good preparation in terms of weather. Of course, it’s always difficult to play in extreme heat like that.

“We just need to monitor the blocks of pressure in the game. It’s hard to press the game for 90 minutes so it’s just preparing the players physically as well as tactically in terms of how you can put a full pitch press on.

“We’ve done as much preparation as we could. Our analysist was out and we have some footage on video so we’ll be as prepared as we possibly can be.”

There’s work to be done on Tuesday. Lets get it done.

you can tell they are taking it seriously, there’s no beer in those glasses..

Alashkert themselves suffered a setback when their Croatian defender, Dino Skvorc, left to join Honved in Hungary earlier this week, which means he won’t be able to play.

Skvorc trained for a week with Celtic back in 2010, but the fee demanded by his then club of around £1m was reckoned to be too steep, so he must have been good.

In fact, an Alashkert statement , released after his move was worded in such a cold “we wish him luck way”, devoid of any emotion, that one wonders if they even knew who he was.

So it might not even have been a setback, come to think of it.

In other news, Dave King will find out on Tuesday if Mike Ashley, who suddenly seems to have found his tanks again and knocked them back into forward gear, will allow him to sell his new strips anywhere else apart from Sports Direct

Over on follow Follow they seem to understand it, and as usual , blame everyone else..

But there are more serious matters to contend with, as King could himself be huckled if he turns up in court…

Of course , the papers are right on top of it….

For it to work you need lots of energy in midfield and down the wings and we don’t have that…

We are in very poor shape. The quality of signings will tell you that it will be a big achievement if we manage to stay in the football league.

Can we take it as being the norm now, that all team members coming back from close season, do so as they left. They are professional athletes, with a demand to always be fit. Why do we need to be constantly reminded? I wonder if Brendan is mentioning this as much, as he feels he still has an issue?

He is also setting a marker for more players being expected.

Over to Pistol Pete to ensure the managers expectations be accommodated. Don’t fuck it up.

Avoid the south side of Glasgow today, comrades, the vermin are out and about.

I’m hoping that we use the game against Shamrock Rovers to get the team sharp and raise the fitness levels before the Alashkert game.

I’m having a good start to the day with the news that the “mandarin” revolution has been halted due to the odious Ashley parking his tanks on the Sevco lawn, they both deserve each other. In other news, the “Free Tommeh 6 names Robinson” demo has been called off due to his supporters wanting to watch the Engerlund game…fascists eh!! Hopefully Sweden can rattle the Engerlund and make it a right good day for me.

Hopefully the World Cup has given us a clearer view on the system we play and on two of our most maligned players. Here is my take on it:

Lustig has been superb in defence and attack, with and without the ball. Although he still looks like he’s unsuited to central areas the one thing that has really stood out is his first time crossing. He may not have scored a wonder goal like some of the competition but while they have slowed their teams down by needing a few touches before crossing, Lustig’s crossing has been accurate and quick and it sets him apart from the rest.

Boyata has been solid for Belgium, his marking, tracking, tackling and aerial abilities have shone through in abundance. He has utilised the ball well and has looked like a quality player.

Why do they look so good at the highest level and get pelters in the SPFL?

Lustig’s crossing has been top class but when he plays for us he usually only has one, heavily marked, striker to hit in the box and his best quality is wasted and that’s when he’s not been played out of position.

Boyata sees far too much of the ball and makes mistakes due to us fannying about at the back and passing the ball between the defence rather than forward. He had what could well be the worst ever Celtic centre half performance in the 3-2 game against sevco but a month later turned in an amazing performance in the 5-0 game. The difference is staggering, the centre half should not see more of the ball than the midfield.

I think it is due to the system we play, we need a system that will allow us to punch above our weight, yet the teams that have done so at the WC are teams that do things differently eg, Russia, Sweden, Uruguay (442) and even Belgium (343). Compare that to the teams that have under-performed that play the same system as we do like Germany, Spain, Brazil and Argentina (451). These teams are laden with superstars yet have struggled and have now been put to the sword. Although there are a number of games still to be played and my comment could come back to bite me, I think the evidence is there and it says we need a change.

Yeah Doc I agree, its always the same. Celtic must play more direct in the ESSPFL. This fanning about gets old super fast. Remember when Larsson & Viduka, Larsson & Sutton started counter attacking Scottish teams 7 goals was a regular occurrence.

Doc, what interested me was the friendly that we played against Sparta, he, Brendan went.. 4-4-2, if I remember right Dembelle played up-front with French Eddy. I thought to myself…he’s never played that before, two strikers up front, but it made absolute sense to me, why purchase another big striker and only play with one striker.
Three good striker’s at the club is fantastic, almost unheard of since Henke, Sutty and Hartson, That pace and power would frighten any opposing team, with one held back in reserve. So I would be up for seeing that any day especially against the Huns. My last word would be that any player playing for their Country is extra motivation, especially with Boyata, playing beside his hero Kompany, he and Verthagen both fantastic defenders who with there team mates showed a master-class in defending and what a keeper the “Maigret” of World football.

There’s no such thing as a dated concept, the only concept that counts is a winning concept and if you have purchased two big powerful centre-forwards then you use them to score goals. Goals win football matches systems don’t win them.

Monti

Reply to  Mike

Mike,
Absolutely, football is football no matter the generation, think of some of the great strike partnerships over the years, Larsson & Sutton, Hughes & Rush, Cottee & McAvennie, Cole & Yorke.

To play two up front, you need two quality central midfielders and two wide players who you get in possession as quickly as possible.

Mike
Reply to  Mike

Playing four at the back keeps you safe, four in the middle can and do interchange, some going forward and some watching the back, its only a 4-4-2 in name. Players today are flexible and adjustable, schooled in different systems. With two up front the goalie has a better chance at hitting his own player. When Brendan played his team against Sparta, Forrest put the ball up the channel and Dembelle used his power and pace to push aside the Sparta defender, who had to watch out for French Eddy. You play the system to your players strengths, two big strong strikers would put the opposition defenders under severe pressure.

And yes Monti, when McGinn joins us he will drive us forward quicker. We have some great players, as the Huns are going to find out soon, as Brendan puts Gerrard back in his box.

Funny that, Brendan started with his strongest team today and there was four centre-backs defenders in his starting eleven. Hendry, Ajer, Simonovic and Tierney and yet it was stated that his system was 3-5-1-1. in essence 4-4-2. Let me repeat it once again, players adapt to the managers instructions and systems mean SFA…..

This fixation with systems, when Celtic played the Huns at Ibrox, Simonovic was sent of and we were playing catch up. We would have put on another defender and tried to shore things up, not Rodgers, he had his team tutored in playing with 10 men and brought on a striker, a striker, he went for it, the players responded to his instructions and we won, thanks to French Eddy’s goal. That is why Rodgers gets the big bucks, systems mean SFA and players and goals win games.

Reality checks:
Colombia scored three penalties, one was missed and only ONE was saved.
Sweden, Croatia and Russia are all solid footballing teams, far more disciplined than Colombia, Tunisia and Panama. They deserve respect.
England LOST to Belgium and Belgium rested 9 outfield players to England’s 8.
Belgium is the only good team England has played thus far.
Let’s hold off on the dozen plus Knighthoods for a few matches yet!!!?
What kind of uptight prick would wear a waistcoat and tie in 35 degree heat yet be praised for it?
Trouser-tenting already? 3 Lions on a shirt and all that…
Most unbiased historians credit England with inventing rugby and ruby-derived games that might later have only resembled football.Football as we know it was invented in Scotland and the passing variety of football was solely invented in Scotland at least thirty years before England latched on to it.
Scotland invented the modern game we now recognise as football.
What would be best for football is if a country wins the World Cup who has never won it before: Sweden, Russia,Croatia or Belgium.
English fans can’t separate England’s football team from— besting Johnny Foreigner, World War II,Imperialism, God and Queen,Brexit, The Monarchy, The Tories, The Blitz etc. nor can the pundits or BBC.
For football to truly ‘come hame’ there needs to be a World Cup held in Scotland.
Because we do not yet live in a fascist state (getting there) I can support any team to win the World Cup that I choose and I do not choose to support Engerlund because an English victory would simply fuel more jingoism and chauvinsim and we have had enough of that up here since 1966/1066.
Here’s to an independent Scottish Socialist Republic, with freedom and equality for all. English men, women and children most welcome!

Reality check is England are in the WC semi final with a very good chance of making the final. They dominated Columbia, who were more intent on surrounding the ref, and Sweden today. I myself think that France will win this competition because they are simply better than anybody else because they have more talent. By the way looks like the English working class are thoroughly enjoying their World Cup run too. While I also dislike the jingosim of the English media and pundits, I do think they have played to their strengths and when you have good players who can do that good things happen. Better get ready for World Cup final with England in it!

Hey, where would John McGinn play in our starting 11? Can he play the centre of our attacking three? I see McGinn as an attacking midfielder and we have Christie, Ntcham and McGregor in that role. Can we change our systerm to accommodate McGinn? Just wondering….I think Brendan sees him as a direct replacement for Armstrong, no bad thing. If Broonie was injured, McGinn would step right in but Broonie is more of a passing, holding midfielder than an attacking one.

BJF

Devoy not sure about Scotland inventing football certainly the passing game but ever since I saw a documentary on how the Chinese invented Golf about 3 thousand years ago I am a bit wary of these claims.
Also Deviy you make an interesting point about where McGinn fits in, not a replacement for Broonie as you say,I assume that is still Kouassi’sc role but he is a quality act and will only get better under Brendan, also a real 90 minute man. Finally a clear up on KT, just stupid to have let that fester for so long, could have nailed it a week ago.

Leon Trotsky

BJF, I think McGinn will play a more central role as it’s possible Brown will drop back slightly in the covering role just in front of our defence. He’s not getting any younger although he’s been outstanding when he’s been written off. I could picture Brown winning balls and using McGinns legs, tenacity and good passing range to the teams advantage. If we sign him, we’ll soon see what BR has in store for him.

As I said its players changing systems as they are required too, with two strikers up front, it doesn’t matter whether one plays behind the other 4-4-1-1. they will move around as required, so I am not getting bogged down with systems, because that means.. nothing, its all about the players and they will change the system around to suit and two powerful strikers will put more pressure om opposing teams.

Any team with a few skilful players will punish them. Belgian reserves beat them. Better letting Fred have his day, YBhoy HH

got to be in it to win it. Where scotland the brave then. never even got out the group stages in the last century when they used to qualify.

Scotlands managers have even said Scottish people cant play football because they are all mutants. w.t.f.

Fred, I’m not a fan of out national team solely down to the SFA and their latest recruit who is an EBT recipient and a cheat. It’s all about the Bhoys for me. I suspect Engerlund might make the final which will be even sweeter as the usual will happen and they’ll fuck it up. I heard that fuckwit McCoust was cheering on Engerlund, no surprise!! I just can’t bide seeing butchers aprons and gammon heads every where I look. I suspect it’s the same with most on here, you being the exception. Enjoy Fred while you can.

the difference between england this time and on previous encounters is the humility. Its also a bunch of younge players given a chance. Getting beat in a WC semi or final is no disgrace. I have no affinity with the Spains, Prortugals, Frances, Russias or Swedens of this world. Godd luck to England and our English players for next season.

Btw message for Spain

I’d agree there is humility and no big ego’s in there. Do you think that if your team get through they could beat either Belgium or France, in particular Belgium?

Fred, are you Scottish? It’s just that I can see you type words like…oot. It’s not a word I’d expect to see an English person using.

Oasis superstar Liam Gallagher has defended his love for Celtic on Twitter this afternoon – whilst insisting he can still support the Hoops whilst enjoying England’s World Cup run.

Liam and his brother Noel are known to be Manchester City supporters first and foremost, but their Irish background has seen them often speak of their affection for the Parkhead side, and both have made several visits to the East End of Glasgow for various different matches over the years.

After taking his latest swipe at his estranged sibling on Twitter, Liam was accused of contradicting himself by following Celtic and Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions side, but the 45-year-old was having absolutely none of it

Just passed the rotten mob at the fire station on the Maryhill Road and there was a police car behind them with the driver battering lumps out the car door through his open window in time to their drum beat. Aren’t our hobbies just wonderful?

See King Billy is issuing another statement, the deflections are so obvious surely even the Gullibillies can see through him.. oh wait.
Murdoch McLellan’s getting it… again. Ashley’s kicking him in the baws, so he’s gotta deflect again. Bet King is wearing his orange crush tee-shirt and rubber knickers as he leads his cavalry up the hill. What T.F. are we gonny do when he finally leaves his skiddoes and shuffles back to A.F. He must be nearly skinto with all his litigating, keeps his brethren busy tho. in the courts. “Fit and proper” for taking the bins out mibbee, but hope he takes of his shiny suit first.

A bit of a romp for the bhoys today but the goals are nice to watch all the same, especially Scotty Sinclair’s and Morgan’s.

Sitting oot in the sunshine with my family and dugs. My old man remembered the pre-Stein era and never got tired of banging on about it any time we had a decent run. The foundations of Celtic Park aren’t concrete. They are the dreams of the faithful in the fallow years. When you’re living the dream you can get complacent. Let’s not do that. No sense of entitlement. Let’s push on and grind those knuckle dragging fuckers into the dust.

‘So, we can now say that there hasn’t been a bid for him, a bid that was accepted and put to him in the expectation that he would turn it down, and when he didn’t, a frantic “lets blame the messenger” campaign when the story got out.’

Honestly mate you are embarrassing yourself now. You fucked up, stop, digging a bigger hole. If he hasn’t turned the bid down why is he still here?

I notice that the KT story is still running with a report from Ian McGarry that that there is a deal in principle with Everton! Plus, his agents are hawking him about the EPL.So Ralph was perhaps correct to feel a wee bit Kleenex at the prospect of him leaving.
Why didn’t Super Leigh get any game time today? BR? Stop feckin the guy about…..
