Celtic Diary Saturday June 23: Hair Today, Gone Sometime Next week

Stuart Armstrong has been given permission to speak to Southampton about personal terms after the two clubs agreed a price for the midfielder.

That price is around £4m , with add ons, the initial part of which we believe will be paid directly into the bank account of a club in Edinburgh.

If I told you where I got that final confirmation from, you wouldn’t believe me.

Southampton has been a popular halfway house for Celts looking to make a few quid down south in the past, with Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk moving on to bigger clubs after a couple of seasons there.

Armstrong is looking to do the same after falling behind Brown, Ntcham, MacGregor, Rogic and probably Ryan Christie in the pecking order at Celtic Park.

Its a move that suits everybody.

It would be unfair to go down the line adopted by some, most notably Chris Sutton, once of Celtic, now of the Daily Record, (he’ll hate that line ) whop argue that its good riddance, due to Armstrongs lack of commitment by not signing a long term deal, or sacrificing a lamb at the centre circle.

Armstrong is a good player, he’s given us four years, and it won’t have been an easy decision for him to leave.

But if he wants a fresh start, and it doesn’t come any fresher than down on the south coast, lets wish him luck.

Two other players are also away, Academy men Joe Thomson and Jamie McCart, to Dunfermline and Inverness respectively.

Again, we wish them well.

In a diary way back when , we mentioned that Celtic would spend around £20m this summer.

With the club banking -or transferring -an immediate £4m to add to the £13m raised by the small print in the van Dijk deal, the funds are there, and thats without dipping into the biscuit tin.

£9m is already spent, £4m is about to be, and Patrick Roberts hasn’t even unpacked his bags yet since he returned south…

I’ve a feeling that the amount spent could be even higher, but the quality and attitude of any incoming has to be the primary concern, as opposed to whether or not he’s a big name.

One name mentioned is John Terry, who is apparently earmarked to be the guy playing the Kolo toure role at the back. Part time mentor and part time disaster waiting to happen, as Toure sensibly realised after the Moenchengladbach game…

You’ll have to trust Brendan on this one if it happens, but my feeling is you won’t have to, because it won’t happen.

The search for a centre back continues to fascinate the media, not least becuase they are the ones flinging names about in the hope they get it right.

Sam Byram, of West Ham is the latest.

Whoever he is.

There won’t be any more additions before Monday, when the squad fly out to Austria for a pre season bender, sorry training camp.

The serious work has started, and it will continue over there, as the manager explained..

“It was important that a lot of the players got a good rest,”

“Not all of them are back as there are some still away on international duty.

“The players had nearly four weeks which is very important. When you play the number of games that we play it’s absolutely critical you come out the battle and have the rest. The players have done that, come back and this is the fittest they’ve come back.

“This is my third pre-season now and, in terms of where they’re at, they’ve come back very fit. In these opening few days they’ve shown a great level of fitness and that helps.”

There does seem to be an indication that he’s got himself and the players into the groove for the qualifiers…

“There’s a beauty of the Champions League phase in that you know you’re into the competitive games fairly quickly and this is now my third experience of that so that’s good,”

“The opening period for the season is about qualification but in terms of our objectives, we’re looking to develop our physical and football fitness. That’s still key and the players have come back with a really good base which I’m very happy with.

“We’ll be looking to develop that over the next few weeks so that when the games come we’re at a really good level. The group look fit, they look strong and we’ve got players coming back. I would hope we’ll be in a really good position with the squad.”

I think he’s more pleased with the way the players have adopted a resonsible attitude to their fitness, rather than their actual fitness.

These are the little things that lift a team a wee bit higher than the sum of its parts.

Here at Etims , we like to give honest opinions where we can, and often rely on the advice of “those in the know ” to form them.

Celtic’s new away kit is a cracker, but there have been doubts in the past about the quality of New Balance products.

So, we asked an expert for her opinion, a lady with years of experience as a top seamstress.

Mima Duke examined the top, and she was impressed, the sleeve especially is quite “involved “, a reference to the work that has gone into it, and it does appear that New Balance have finally got it right.

Well, if its good enough for her, its good enough for me.

What we also like to do is offer a platform to anyone with a view that might be a little different from ours.

This weeks idiot was found lurking on twitter…

They never change, do they ?

And for that, we love the little rascals.

A lot of them are deeply religious, as we know, and as a result don’t believe in evolution. Then again, its not like they’ve seen any evidence of it in their own circles.

Mind you, we’ve got them as well…

The World cup continues this weekend.

Keep an eye out for a centre back.

A mates looking for one.

Speaking of the World cup, which almost burst into life the other night when Argentina started kicking people like they used to when Croatia ruthlessly took them apart.

The Argentinian manager kept saying that all his other players aren’t at the level of Lionel Messi, and he can;t be expected to do it on his own.

Until the manager stops talking like that, he’s going to have to…

There’s also debate around women being involved on the pitch, as officials, and off the pitch, as pundits.

Women pointing out mens mistakes and advising them on how they could do it better ?

It’s taken until now for someone to realise that women might actually be quite good at that ?

Image result for facepalm gif

My ghast, once again, has been flabbered.

It’s the Lennon CSC AGM today, 3pm Newcastle Catholic club, anyone in the area is welcome to attend.

I’ll probably surface again on Monday, as I’m led to believe that there will be refreshments available.

Women should NOT be allowed any say on football, they should be allowed to work in the foid halls or as waitresses in the club lounges….but asking for their opinions on football is a huge error.
Quite simply they do not have a fucking clue about the game.

Spot on. A woman would have punted Boyata last season and we’d have lost a player with the potential of a world cup medal. Anyone that blinkered shouldn’t be allowed to comment on the game.

Certainly don’t have any issues with women at the football in an aesthetic capacity, cheerleaders for example would be most welcome.
Or like they do in boxing, get a scantily clad wench to put the board up indicating time to be added on.
Yes….this would be fine.

And Fraser Foster also Ralphy, your information Ralphy, I’m going to ask you because if you say it then I would believe it, you are saying that its Armstrong for McGinn with Scott Allan included, plus a one year lone for Mikey Johnston? In essence we bought French Eddy for the Van Dijk money and are trading Armstrong plus for McGinn. So no real extra money spent.. yet. The thought of giving Pukey Petrie any money is boak inducing and despite what others might think, Celtic are not here to subsidise any other clubs, we do so much for the SPFL already with the C.L. monies already plus most of our younger players go out on loan as well of course that the Celtic support plough into other clubs in away games. Celtic the club that props up the rest of Scottish football.

Pure Mince and yes it IS just you that thinks like this, Scottish football has been ravaged by corrupt officials and crooks like King and Murray. Its what happens in the real World, what you are suggesting is that despite all that Celtic do for Scottish football, that we should somehow subsidise other clubs more, so that we can all have a more competitive league, that is pure fantasy, where else in sport does this occur, which clubs subsidise competitors, answer.. none. Celtic already do play with a straight bat and many other Scottish clubs fully appreciate what we do for them. Celtic DO pay the going rate for players, we are known through out Europe as a well run and a fair and honest club, a club that the top European clubs like to play against, our reputation is second to none.

Mike

Reply to  Mike

FFS Do you think for one minute that putrid Petrie would stand aside and let Celtic take his teams prize asset for anything other than his true value. Celtic have ALWAYS paid the going rate. Do you think that your valuation of McGinn is the right one and that Celtic will somehow try to steal him away at a reduced transfer. Do not ever equate what Celtic do to other teams like Murray or King You seem to suggest that Celtic will try to purchase other teams players below the going rate or don’t play with a “straight bat” that is a disgusting thing to say about the club and its a load of utter shite.

Utter drivel, comparing the way that Celtic are run to the huns and then suggesting that we don’t pay the going rate for players. Celtic are acknowledged through out Europe as being a well run and honest club. To suggest that we somehow subsidise our competitors more to get a more competitive league is pure fantasy and utter drivel.

Armstrong served us well in Brendan’s first year but injuries sidelined him last year and then he lost momentum. On his game, he was good and filled a gap in our team. Some say we got £7 million for him—if true, a good piece of business. It was maybe time for him to go but I wish him well.

Wow, what a game! This Belgium team is something else. Fianl score 5-2 but they could have scored 10. Gaun yersel’ big Dedryk, step up another gear and become the first ever Celtic player to be in a World Cup winning team! How much would he be worth if that happened?

The competition is just beginning to become really interesting as better quality games are beginning to materialise as a clutch of unfancied 2nd tier teams are playing oh so much better than the so-called favourites. Belgium v Croatia, what a final that would be. Mexico and Nigeria are another couple of teams that could make an impact, not to mention Russia. Some good stuff lies ahead.

From a bairn my auld Da he introduced me to many different forms of music we both loved Classical music from Gigli to Lanza and Irish traditional music, was a particular favourite. The important thing is to enjoy it, music, its good for the soul, it just makes life so much more enjoyable and puts a smile on your face. Things are good here, the weather has been great, warm and dry, but thank goodness for our fitba. fix, the World Cup. I’ve just read it now Mike, absolutely great material. Thanks ever so much for that. One of the best films I’ve ever seen re the International Brigades who fought for the Republican cause was the Ken Loach classic ‘Land and Freedom’ (Tierra y Libertad) (1995). Although 80 years have passed since the Spanish Civil War was raging, it’s quite remarkable how many of the scars still remain to this very day and it’s ever so evident how that war, along with Franco’s 36 year regime have shaped Spanish society. There is still a lot of political friction going on at this very time between the right and left regarding ‘The Law of Historical Memory’ which demands that all street names depicting Franco’s most famous military officers be changed, that all kinds of monuments and symbols venerating Franco shall be removed, that Franco’s body be exhumed from its place of honour in ‘El Valle de los Caídos’ and re-buried at a different site, the bodies of republican soldiers and political adversaries who were executed en masse during the war and the regime and then buried ignominiously in mass graves to be exhumed, identified through DNA and given a decent burial and several more issues, has been largely ignored by Rajoy’s PP government with zero budget being assigned to bring about these changes. An existing law has to be respected. I imagine that now, with the new government, these changes will slowly but surely get underway.

Yoker would you Adam and Eve it, just watched a programme on PBS America about the Scots who fought Franco. I found out many many new facts, about the Spanish towns who kept silent for so many years never mentioning it because of neighbour fighting neighbour and only now are beginning to open up about it. Mass graves being discovered and bodies being repatriated to families. The reason that I read up about it was because I never heard much about it and wanted to learn about what went on. In Montrose Basque families were brought there to recover and so much more that I could ever post. Every day is a learning day, but back to the fitba. mon the Swedes. That’s fascinating stuff Mike, I think I’ll do a bit of investigating myself this summer to find out more.
Germany have scorred through Kroos in the dying seconds. Great goal but a cruel blow for Sweden who were hanging on so well and standing up to the 2nd half onslought. Good game though which was not lacking in high drama. After a slow and disappointing start, this championship is really starting to come alive. I hope the new champion will be a first-time winner.
Have a good night and chat soon. Cheers Mikey.

Bigotory in the Northen towns of England.
YOUNG man has revealed how he was subjected to sectarian abuse and anti-Irish taunts in Manchester city centre while wearing a Celtic shirt.

Stephen Russell, 19, from Rochdale told The Irish Post how he “thought he was dead” as the incident unfolded last month.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they investigated the incident as a religiously aggravated public order offence.

FAMINE SONG
Mr Russell was with his 17-year-old girlfriend when four men in their late 30s targeted him at around 4pm on Saturday, May 12.

He says the unprovoked incident begin as he entered the Waterhouse pub in the city centre while wearing his Celtic shirt.

“As I was walking up the steps, all I heard was, ‘f*** off home you Fenian c***’,” he said.

After ignoring the jeers, he entered the pub but was unable to find a seat.

As he left by a different exit, the taunts started up again.

“One of them is singing the Famine Song and one of them is singing the Billy Boys,” said Mr Russell.

“They were like, ‘f*** off home you Irish c***, f*** off you Fenian c***’.

“One of them stepped out of the beer garden and he’s pointing at me and he’s shouting things like ‘I wish you were f****** dead, if your girlfriend wasn’t there you’d be dead’.”

Mr Russell and his girlfriend went into a nearby supermarket, from where he called the police.

While there, the men passed the store and gestured inside, however a security guard reassured the young couple he would not let the group in.

After the couple left the store and made their way out of the area, they came across the same group outside a different pub and the verbal abuse continued.

Fotunately they were able to carry on their way without the situation escalating further.

‘HATRED’
Mr Russell, who was born in England and whose father is from Glasgow, believes he was targeted because he was wearing a Celtic shirt.

Despite not being Irish, he says he was disgusted by the abuse during the terrifying experience.

“I was terrified, I thought I was dead,” he said.

“You could see the hatred – they hate me, they hate that I’m a Catholic, they hate my football team and they hate that they think I’m Irish, which I’m not.”

Despite the experience, Mr Russell said he would continue to wear his Celtic shirt.

“They want to scare me into not wearing it again, but it’s not going to happen, it’s my club,” he said.

Mr Russell contacted the pub afterwards where staff expressed their sympathy at the incident, however both the pub and the police have been unable to identify the men.

GMP confirmed to The Irish Post they had attended the area and had treated the case as a religiously aggravated public order offence.

However after investigating, they have been unable to identity the suspects.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are sorry that the man suffered abuse in one of our pubs.

“We praise our staff for the way in which they dealt with the situation and we will assist the police in any way possible.”

Ralph you csught the mood with your view of Armstrong, good good player, pity about his injury last season but no one, except maybe Broonie, guaranteed their place in mid field ,great competition for midfield although expect Tom Rogic to struggle for a while even the Maestro did after a big summer competition.
Always been a fan of Boyata, he has pace, good in the air and weighs in with goals, against that he is prone to error, just from time to time. I liked it when he realised he sometimes just has to get a foot in it rather than play it out. If he wants to make the next step, concentrate and be decisive even
if it ain’t pretty.
