Celtic Diary Tuesday June 12: Seventeenth Century Society Leaks Into the 21st

It must be the hot weather.

For instance, i’d to go to the doctors again yesterday morn, more results from my MOT test, and i was sitting next to a guy there who seemed a little morose.

” What are you in for ? ” he asked, clearly bored.

Trying to make him feel better, I replied that I was looking to get an endoscopy.

“what’s that ?” he wanted to know.

“It’s when they put a camera down your throat to have a wee look round. What about you ?”

“Camera up the bottom ” He said

“Ah, a colonoscopy. ”

“No, the missuss caught me taking photo’s of the neighbour sunbathing “.

Well, with all the gloom around our players leaving, and no players coming in, i figured you’d want to hear about someone worse off than ourselves.

Stuart Armstrong, despite not saying anything publicly, is being touted around the less glamorous clubs in english football.

West Brom and Crystal Palace lead the way, and the dilemma for Arnstrong, if indeed he is a bit restless at Celtic, is whether to go for money or medals.

Tom Boyd, who preferred medals, explained…

‘What do you want to be as a player?’

‘Do you want to be a winner? Or do you want to just earn good money?

‘I really hope Stuart can stay at Celtic. We don’t want our best players leaving.

‘I know in the grand scheme of things there’s a big gap between the Scottish Premiership and the English Premiership. And he clearly has a decision to make.

‘But I don’t want to see Stuart go. Hopefully we can get him to stay – a five year contract would be nice.

‘I think he’s a happy man at Celtic. He’ll win things there.’ His medal haul to date isn’t too shabby, though. Four titles, two Scottish Cups, two League Cups – have all been attained in three-and-a-half years.

That might be the issue. He’s got the medals, the stories to tell his grandchildren, and I believe he’s now finished his law degree.

And we all know what lawyers are like over money..

Competition in Celtic’s midfield is high, with even Kouassi Eboue looking like he’s surplus to requirements, although a loan is more likely for him.

Rogic and MacGregor have both proved a point last season, adding crucial goals to their already formidable CVs.

Armstrong though, on his day, is an energetic addition to the side, but that pass in that game late on at Hampden against england may have affected his confidence, especially when combined with injuries and the resultant  slip down the pecking order.

However, a new five year deal, and a vote of confidence from the manager would soon sort that out.

The lad, if he is restless, is taking his time deciding, and so he should. He’s 26 now, and his best years should be ahead of him. I’d prefer them to be at Celtic, but won’t begrudge him if he decides to move.

As for Kouassi, he needs game time. There’s no doubt there’s a player in there, but with Olivier Ntcham starting to show he’s ahead of him, then perhaps a loan would be a good idea, but with the stipulation he can come back should Scott Brown ever get injured.

As usual, there are various names banded about as additions to the squad, with Jon Flanagan of Liverpool the latest ex Rodgers prodigy to become available.

Injuries have haunted the full back and the Merseyside club have decided to pay him off, as they continue their summer clear out of those surplus to requirementsImage result for steven gerrard

Meanwhile, Celtic manager Brendan rodgers has been out and about visiting Celtic fans in Belfast..

and stealing their mobility scooters by the look of it.

And yet, how would that supporter have felt ? Indeed, how would the manager have felt seeing a supporter so obviously passionate about the club ?

Now, tell me again about that offer from Leicester….

Well, look at how much fun that job is.

Image result for leicester city manager 2018

Celtic are going places. It might be a bit of a bumpy ride, and we might all fall out with each other on the way, but something is happening at the club.

We do live in wonderful times.

Some, however, prefer the past. such as the Daily Record, who astonishingly referred to Africa in a way that hasn’t been done in many a decade. not outside of Tory Party HQ, at least.

They were referring to yet another “rangers ” target, who would have been delighted to read this report.

The term itself refers to the way Europeans back in the old colonial days described Africa, something still evident when you see any standard world map, which always protrays the continent at about half the size it really is..

Dark Continent

Often Offensive

Africa considered as mysterious, especially to Europeans and people of European descent, chiefly when its interior was largely unknown to them. Henry M. Stanley was probably the first to use the term inThrough the Dark Continent (1878).
To make the point, this is your average world map, one you are probably quite familiar with..
This is an actual size map of Africa, with other countries placed within its border to give a true idea of size..
Image result for africa true size map
For a national newspaper to use that term shows a shocking lack of knowledge combined with a complete disregard for race relations.
We rang the Record to ask to speak to the author, but we were told he was away on holiday.
Image result for black man carrying white woman
Of course, the paper is only pandering to its audience, which consists of a fair number of people who adopt a farily nostalgic outlook on life, late seventeenth century style. and its narratives like that that lead to incidents like this…

Standing at a road waiting to cross and the guy standing next to me starts whistling the Famine Song at me. That’s a racist anti-Irish ‘song’, for those who don’t know. Disgusting.

This tweet, incidentally, received 543 replies, the majority of which were not complimentary, and you don’t have to guess which nostalgic section of society predominated. Or what the gist of those replies were.
There were one or two, however, who claimed that it was a Beach Boys song that was being whistled, Sloop John B, the lyrics of which include these lines..
Image result for sloop john b lyrics
However, the incident took place at a bus stop, where boats find it difficult to pick up passengers, so its unlikely that this was the version of the melody being delivered.
Incidentally, I was at a bus stop with Angela a while back, ( I used to do a wee bit of writing for Common Space, where she was editor )and far from being the attention seeker she is accused of, she wanted to be as anonymous as possible, and not just in case anyone saw her with me, which I suppose would be reason enough.
T o my mind, what happened to her last week  reminiscent of this incident…
Image result for barry ferguson two fingers
A snide wee jibe that is more common in the playground, the actions of someone carrying around plenty of hatred, but confused as to how to express or explain it.
By now, Angela is used to this sort of thing, and being the hardy wee soul she is, it won’t intimidate her or change the way she is.
But as long as the mainstream media encourage and remain afraid of these people, they’ll feel like they can do as they please.
You may think the connection with the use of the archaic and offensive “dark continent ” term is perhaps stretching the connection a little too much, but it isn’t.
There’s a mindset out there which is locked in a time warp. And its seeping over into our century.
Is this another example of it ?
HAMPDEN EXIT

SFA compliance officer Tony McGlennan has ‘quit the role’

It’s claimed the lawyer – who replaced Vincent Lunny in 2014 – handed in his resignation after deciding to return to private practice this summer

The SFA is a mess, the media are a mess, and guess what….no one seems to give a fuck.
Will the papers ask McGlennan why he’s leaving ?
If he wants a platform, tell him to get in touch.
There’s clearly something going on here.
Yesterday, we showed you this..

Ralph good diary, spot on about Armstrong hope he stays but Celtic have no problem attracting quality. I think positively, this is the best of times. If the new club step up then Rodgers, Lawwell and Desmond must endure we “ mind the gap,” and they will.

Ralph, excellent. I would like Armstrong to stay and improve. Right now, he offers a few things the others don’t. I see him as an attacking midfielder, one who can move the ball forward or in the centre of the attacking three. Midfield is our strongest area though so even McGinn maybe coming to Celtic would pose some good problems for Brendan. Armstrong might see it that he has a pretty decent trophy cabinet already and now might want some real dosh, without the hassle of having to win with Celtic. Life in the English Championship must be a dawdle. Not many cup matches, no Europe, play for draws away from home, a groovy life in the English Green Belt. Sunday lunch at the Royal Oak and all that!
I’ve always wondered if the formidable legal team who might own musical rights to ‘Sloop John B’ (the Beachboys?-some still alive!) might want to know how their song is now being used? I bet they don’t know. Sevco could be hit with a fine that even even shameless liars can’t evade.
Caption: Jist removing some hermless graffiti… “The Famine’s over, Stevie go hame…”
Huns don’t do irony but will the thousands who sing the vile song stop doing that out of respect for their new manager? Don’t bet on it.

Dev, in 2014 I sent a PM on a Beach Boys FB page regarding the song. I was surprised the following evening to get a response from Brian Wilson’s son, I’m surmising Wilson Sr is deceased. He was appalled that the song was being used in such a way and told me he couldn’t do anything about it as his father and others weren’t the original music composers. If my memory serves me right he said that it was a folk song. He also stated that his father and the rest of the Beach Boys would have been appalled that the music would be used in a discriminatory manner.

On the subject of Armstrong, I am in the stay camp, he offers running at defenders and has a reasonable goal scoring record, although I think that Calmac offers a better option and that just shows how much that he has improved.
If Eboue Kouassi is going out on loan, I really like him BTW why would we bring in McGinn, my preference is Kouassi, before McGinn.
I really like French Eddy and he would be a suitable replacement for Dembelle if he elects to leave, even if that is next season. I and its my post would like to see a new right back and a quality central defender. I also like Biton, he offers different options in defence, so its gonny be interesting to see who comes in and goes out, it wasn’t that long ago that left footed players were scares but just look at the team now, you can never stand still but we are in a good place just now, are we ready for a step up in quality? yes M’laud we sure are.

Monti

Reply to  Mike

The defence is still not anywhere near good enough, harsh? Maybe but accurate i feel.

Craig Gordon long term? Not so sure.
Lustig needs to be back up to a new right back, Ajer has done enough to be given a run but Boyata & Simunovic need to go.
Cover for Tierney is also required, will Compper contribute in thr coming season?

Discuss….

Mike
Reply to  Monti

Never heard of him… Discuss, what position does he play.

I personally don’t think that we need another goalkeeper at this time with Scott Bain pushing Gordon, but I agree with your summation about the defence, that definitely needs sorting, although the stats say that it doesn’t. If Commper was usable we would have seen him before now, I think he falls into the who T.F. bought him. For me Eddy aside, Bitton gives several different options, but a new right back, centre-half and as you say cover for K.T. although that is not a priority, unless a new centre-half can also cover for him.

Monti
Reply to  Mike

Not so sure about Bitton now, has done a job but it’s time to freshen things up, McGinn would be a good addition.
Kouassi going out on loan makes sense as he needs games over a lengthy period.

Mike
Reply to  Monti

Well we just have to wait and see who Brendan puts out the door and who he brings in. The priority for me was keeping nearly all of the first team and making a couple of additions. If Kouassi goes out on loan that doesn’t make sense to me, I would prefer him to stay, he’s still only 20 though so still has plenty of time. Gerrard is strengthening the spine of his team, McGregor, Goldson
Arfield and he is following the MON theory for Scottish football, the bigger the better. So we need to outmuscle them, that is a wee concern I have. But the biggest concern… by far, is with the governess of the game, if we demur to them, then the games a bogie.

What McGlennan and McKinlay and Regan’s resignations are telling me is that the Judicial Protocol system and Compliance arrangements that all clubs voted for are causing one club in particular massive problems.

If other clubs do not step up to the plate and defend the Judicial Protocol then the game is beyond saving.

Perhaps McGlennan sees that coming?

They cannot compete in a one team league, alternatively if they have a problem with the truth or justice and they are determined that its there way or none, then Celtic must flex the power that we have and use it. A bhoycott is what I mean, no away support.. period, for League or cup competitions. I do not think that Joe O’Rourke would countenance us doffing our caps or be ruled by them.

The Curious Case of the Compliance Officer who left in the Night.

At this stage it would take Sherloch Holmes to figure out why Tony McG left his post. Is it because his findings on the Ranger’s application for a licence have been diluted/ignored, or is it because they were not detailed enough and avoided the real issues and culprits?

What is clear is that things are changing in the S F of A…..whither it is for the better or worse, only time will tell. Judging by past experience, probably a bit of both.

Who would be interested in his job? Who would be interested in any of the positions in the S F of A? Here we have an organisation that has bent its own rules to suit single interests and appears to be still doing it. An organisation that has failed to improve the quality of the national team, serially. An organisation that has consistently undersold the TV rights to our game. An organisation that thinks the future of the national game can be improved by appointing a has-been or never was manager who has a recent track history of failure. An organisation that cannot see the need for league restructuring to, at the least, do away with the ludicrous “split”.

Meanwhile access to more attractive football leagues and teams continues to expand across international borders, offering live match experiences in the comfort of a living room.

We shall either get innovators who see the above as challenges, OR, we shall get those that could not get as lucrative a job anywhere else……those that wish to maintain the status quo with a different colour of paint thinly spread over the decomposing body.

What shall it be?

Noel Skytrot, Brian Wilson alive and well, played a concert in the UK recently or else is about to.
I agree the defence needs strengthened at full back, we need an alternative right back although maybe Anthony Ralston is that man, happy enough with Boyata, Ajer and Simmunivic with Compter or an other but definitely cover for KT, keepers are fine.

Mike

They say that Regan was pushed out the door.
Garry Hughes, left of his own accord.
Tony McGlennan’s disappearance is much more suspicious, being that his report is due to air.. possibly, later this month.

But Rebus is correct, never since Farry has the SFA been in such turmoil. I often wonder if Greene or Whyte had it included in the basket of assets. It seems to be nothing more than an OAP’s self-serving club, designed for the hard of hearing and thought. It certainly is not fit for purpose and in so many different ways.

A bit like the F.A. only with a kilt and a “see you Jimmy hat”

On first thought I agree that Politics and Sport should not mix. However, this view can change depending on the nature of the “Politics!”

Where “Politics” touches on morality, or is subsumed by it, my thinking changes. So I would support a banner at a game that said, “Feed the Hungry of the World”. However, I am less favourably disposed to banners supporting specific political groups who have a variety of aims even including feeding the hungry.

Display banners outside the ground for political factions, by all means, but leave the ground for the sporting experience, largely.

Trouble is it can be difficult to separate a moral cause from the politics being used to attain it. Then we get into judgement calls.

Not sure I understood any of that, maybe you’ll do better!

I want Celtic to get into human genetics to engineer a gene bank of the best ever Celt’s. Approach the families of the very best players and engineer a mix of gene’s to fabricate the best of players.
Just think of say the centre-half position, a gene mixture of George Connelly’s passing precision, Paul Elliott’s pace and power and big Billy’s positional nous. We could apply that to every position, that would save a fortune in players coming in or out and make a massive saving on transfer fees. It worked for Dolly the sheep, the Dandy Dons could use actual sheep, Mules, Suffolk or Texel or Beltex.

Rebus, I haven’t forgotten about your genealogy either. Just had a few glitches in my searching. Peace and good health to you and all on this site.
Politics and sport must often mix but not every Celtic fan shares the same view of the IRA, Provos, etc. Nor did the Irish of earlier generations agree either. But it seems to me hunger, unemployment and democracy are big enough issues to be getting on with. The fate of the people living on the Irish island should be theirs and theirs alone to determine—north and south. I don’t live there.
