Celtic Diary Monday May 14: Seven Sealed and Delivered

One of the worst games of the season, and perhaps the celebrations at the end were somewhat muted-apart from the lump in the throat when the Magnificent Seven tune came on-and we now turn our attention to the cup final.

And we really need to get down to some hard work on the training field to get back the drive that won the league.

Celtic lost a two and a half year domestic home unbeaten run with a 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen which would have had dons fans wondering what kind of season they would have had had they competed in the other games against the tow bigger Glasgow clubs.

For Celtic fans there must be a little bit of doubt nagging at the back of their minds about securing an eighth title next season..

But we’ll worry about that next season.

Aberdeens win means that “rangers ” finish third, and in a desperate attempt to seem relevant, some of the hordes shouted about Celtic lying down…

He’s not the worst..

6 years after this prick led every club in Scotland down Bheast St. citing SPORTING INTEGRITY, his team lie down at home, give up an unbeaten home record, so that a team they say is new, doesn’t get second. INTEGRITY? You and your fucking disgusting club couldn’t even SPELL it.

Image result for does it hurt

Who cares ? I’m just glad it does.

Astonishingly, they’re even blaming someone else for their own failures on the pitch as well as off it. They just can’t be nice, can they ?

A disappointed Brendan Rodgers claimed that Joe Lewis-the Aberdeen keeper who had a good game-prevented Celts late on from at least getting a draw..

Joe Lewis made a great save at the end. As soon as we went 1-0 down, we went to three-diamond-three to try and get as many attackers on the pitch as we could.

‘We knew we wouldn’t concede so many opportunities from that moment. We did everything to actually try and win the game. So I think conspiracy in this case certainly wouldn’t apply.

‘In the game, we looked tired and sluggish, to be fair. It was our 60th competitive game today.

‘I thought the team with the greater need to win the game, won the game.

‘We didn’t play so well, but over the bigger picture of the 38 games I thought we thoroughly deserved to win the title.

‘It is always disappointing when you lose and that’s the first time we have lost here in the league in the two seasons I’ve been here.

We did everything to actually try and win the game. So I think conspiracy in this case certainly wouldn’t apply.

“It’s a case of managing each game. I have to bear in mind that we have one fully-fit striker in Moussa and we need to make sure he was fit.

“Thankfully Moussa has come through the game and we tried to get some minutes into Leigh.

“It is a case of balancing with the other players. There are two ways you can go. You could rest them all, but then you don’t play a game for two weeks and you can be undercooked.

“I will sit with the staff and we will have a look during the week. Think about what is the best plan to beat Motherwell, then from there we will try to pick the best team to implement that plan.

Motherwell will have been taking notes over the last week or so, and with goalless performances against Kilmarnock and now Aberdeen, they should have a fair idea how to stop the Celts from winning back to back trebles.

Nothing is guaranteed next week, and there’s a lot of work to be done between now and then…

Rodgers  said…

I have quality in that squad, we can enjoy this, recover and then get ready for the next game.”

Well, he should know what to do then.

The atmosphere at these kind of games is never conducive to great performances, and many players will have been at half power, not wanting to risk injury ahead of the showpiece game, thats only natural.

As long as they can switch back on, there will be no issues, but one cannot help but fret a little..

I’ve got an idea.

From next season onwards present the trophy at the end of the game that sees it won.

I can’t think of any other sport where a victor has to wait a couple of weeks to receive the spoils.

Anything that adds to the excitement can’t be a bad idea, and there’s no reason why the trophy can’t be paraded after the last game again.

Steven Gerrard, the man convinced by Dave king that he can be a football manager, cranked up the hype for next season..

Celtic have had it their own way for far too long.

“This is a massive opportunity for myself and Gary McAllister to go to a huge football club and try to improve things in Glasgow.

“We go up to Glasgow and we will give it our best.

“Liverpool have been fantastic because they actually came to me and said that Rangers would like the opportunity to speak to me.

“I asked them what they thought and they have since given me every bit of support that I needed to go and take the challenge on. I go with Liverpool’s blessings.”

They didn’t even try to talk him out of it, or offer him a job with the first team. That’s  kind of interesting…

Reality will soon bite, and it will leave quite a deep scar on the likeable scouser.

for now though, they are in the medals…just..

At half time yesterday, I think I met the guy with the worst job in the world..two of them in fact…who have to stand in the toilets to stop people having a crafty fag.

Effectively, he was watching people have a wee wee, though he claimed he wasn’t, as he faced the opposite wall, but when I pointed out the mirror to him, he was suitably embarrassed.

There was some good news on the European front..

And it’s official. Celtic will be seeded for all CL qualifying rounds of next season’s tournament, should we progress to each. But if we do make the group stages we’re almost certain to be in Pot 4 again. It’d now take an incredible sequence of results for us to make Pot 3.

Image result for phew gif

Eight games in eight weeks will be tough enough even with seeding, so that helps a little.

For Scottish football, there is still a lot of work to be done to change its image, and its important that the new television deal is placed with those who know how to do that.

Pure Fitbaw on twitter outlined what we are up against;

⚽️“Standard of defending is shocking” Hibs 5 – Rangers 5

⚽️ “Expansive, free flowing, attacking football” Levante 5 – Barcelona 4

⚽️ “This is the EPL the only league you’ll see this” Spurs 5 – Leicester 4

We really need to start blowing our own trumpet a little louder.

Though perhaps someone has already heard it.

There’s talk that Celtic have been tipped the wink about hosting a European final soon, and this is why the club are spending around £4m tarting the place up with some lights, which seems expensive and pointless but the underside of the roof is looking a bit tatty.

It’s going to mean that the stadium will look spectacular on european nights, and having checked, there aren;t really too many criteria since the old “star ” ratings for stadia were scrapped.

And anyway, one influential woman wants to have an excuse to go to a game at Celtic Park as she enjoyed her visit during the commonwealth games, and she’s been on the phone to UEFA nagging them about it.

Image result for queen elizabeth Celtic

The idea of a European final is all well and good, but frankly if Celtic aren;t in it, its a bit of a waste of time for me.

That’s like renting your house out to other people to have a party while you bob down to a bar until they’ve all gone home.

Elsewhere, Hamburg , with those delightful fans who did a “No surrender ” tifo when they played Celtic, were relegated, meaning they are in that elite list of clubs who failed to reach 55 ( years in the top flight ) , a number which seems to be a bit of an obsession for some peepil.

They faced Borussia Moenchengladbach, and “that German club “, whose fans enjoy a laugh, had an excellent way of reminding Hamburg of their impending doom..

What a diabolical way for Moenchengladbach fans to tease Hamburg: a choreography about how many minutes Hamburg is far from being relegated, changing the minutes as the clock goes by

I’m not sure diabolical is the right word here.

Hamburg fans rioted, though that was no doubt to make new signing David Bates, from “rangers “, feel at home when he gets there next season.

It would be nice to renew our acqaintence with borussia in europe next season. They’re fun guys, although one or two veteran european travellers were a little upset that there is no chance of playing Kansas City..

Speaking of funny images..

Its Freddo Morelas !

There were no diaries over the weekend, i was busy Saturday so i could have a day off yesterday to go to the game..thats me in the black with a bloke who stole my hat..

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, people standing, sky, shoes, tree, grass and outdoor

So we go back to Friday for this..

Oh bugger, I’ve just seen the accounts. Said in broad scouse.

A bit of a damper to end the season but we’ve done it before I remember. I was watching the video of MON’s first season and the last two games had to be won to break the 100 points mark and he played reserves and youngsters and we lost them. Managers? What do they know.
Now on to the Cup Final, fingers crossed and beads rattling and hope the right Celtic team turn up.

Aye that still annoys me to this very day!
After going through that season, we threw away a true golden chance.

I mind big mjallby having to fight for late winner against Dundee and yon Ivano Bonetti or his brother in his timberlands on the sidelines..such grit deserved to last to the end and the 100

Just look at the players Dundee had at that time…

From next season onwards present the trophy at the end of the game that sees it won – fair point as they could store it in our team bus but what happens when there’s deciding matches at the opposite end of the country say us at home and the next best team Aberdeen at home? Helicopter Sundays are good for the central belt teams but hardly fair on the rest.

Well done the Bhoys
Well done to Broony on winning more personal awards
Well done Lenny for sending the Deliverance Hordes into total fucking meltdown.
Well done FC Barca

I see Gerrard rattling his gums about Celtic….they’ll never learn

I don’t have anything for the caption but I’ve just finished Andy Lynch’s book and this was written…

“I remember being introduced to Steven Gerrard at half-time in the guests’ room. Upon hearing that I was an ex-Celtic player, the Liverpool midfielder was quick to to me that he had a great love of the Glasgow club.”

Cheers for the great articles, Desi, Ralph and co and for my fellow Etims, keep it coming.

Are any other fans on this site nervous about the way we’ve often played this season? I don’t think we can play this poorly next season and get away with it: with Aberdeen, Sevco, Hibs, Killie, Hearts wise to us.
In our seven in a row:
this season was the joint worst total for wins
it was the worst season for number of draws
it was the second worst for number of losses
for total points it was second worst
goals for— the worst
It was also the narrowest margin over second place
Funny, we allowed exactly the same number of goals this season as last.
I think domestically we are ok defensively now. In Europe that’s a different matter.
However, even Sevco scored more team goals than we did this season.
What went wrong with our offence this season? Was it just injuries?
I’m worried that Motherwell will be able to imitate Killie, Aberdeen, etc.
Any ideas bhoys?
However, congratulations to Brendan and the bhoys for seven in a row and for winning when it counted. As a fan, I am proud and grateful (but nervous!)
Back to back Trebles.
C’mon the Celtic! Hail, hail…

Devoy,
Brendan & the players have delivered 5 trophies out of 5, i expect that to be 6 out of 6 on Saturday.
It will be a difficuilt game, i think Celtic will win 3-1 on the day.
It was a strange day yesterday, at the start i wanted Celtic to win, then when Aberdeen scored i wasn’t up nor down, then near the end of the game , knowing this resut would hurt Sevco, i was happy enough with the end result.
If there is ANYTHING we can do that directly hurts Sevco, we should always do it!

We are on the verge of another historic season, we will deliver when it matters!

It was a nothing game for us, I was more annoyed at Brendan risking Rogic ( the full game!), MacGregor, Forrest and Broony with the truly big game next week.
I actually thought Broony was gonna get sent off but Craig Thomson did him a favour when could have easily got out a second yellow card.

I also thought Thomson had forgot Celtic needed to score to help Rangers but didn’t matter whgen Hibs scored and Lenny went into his aeroplane Sunday mode.

Shame we didn’t get to applaud wee Paddy Roberts one last time, but that kinda sums up his season, even in a nothing game, Brendan forgot all about him

Interesting.
The side to side obsession and pass then into submission is becoming predicatable and tiresome. More direct football needed or at least an alternative option ready to be implemented now and again ( see recent Hearts game). I think the onus on Broony has been too much and Ntcham can take over but our midfield needs to go forward more rather than sideways and back to defence. Currently only Armstrong is our only midfielder who takes the ball and drives directly forward, Macgregor prefers one-twos and Broony and Ntcham are side and back passers. Anotehr midfielder needed then if Armstrong departs.

Up front, its anyones game really. Griff hoping to get a new contract signed but isn’t first name on brendans sheet, Odsonne injured and in limbo for now. Dembele, probably away we all suspect. We all hope for that class signing but I suspect its another loanee, especially if we can get Edoaurd signed up with Dembele away. Either way I suspect it will be us going with Griff up until August.

Anyone else grimace at some of the names getting a medal yesterday..Compper, Gamboa, Ralston…even De Vries has a bigger claim!

For Saturday – big difference is this game matters, Kille and Aberdeen didn’t, half tackles, half hearted runs will not be in evidence on Saturday. Celtic weren’t outplayed or out-muscled by Killie or Aberdeen, mentally they just didn’t get out of 1st gear as its only natural to save yourself for key match a week later.

I think Dembele will be ready for Sunday and go out on a bang. The wee hour would have helped him yesterday and he really does turn up at Hampden and the bigger games when needed.
Hopefully wee James and Rogic can get back in the groove and get the ball to him.

I think playing 60 games has something to do with it. Since we are playing many more games than our domestic rivals, there is a fatigue factor. Id be happy to win a treble next year and winning the league by 9 points! Especially if we are in Europe till after Christmas. I really hope we win the double treble on Saturday and that will complete another season where the actual outcome will be the same as last season. Then onto those vital CL qualifiers.

Devoy,

I also have concerns and here is why. Sure Aberdeen needed the game more than us but that is not the reason that we lost. We did not lose because the players were tired or saving themselves. The players did not lose the game, the system did that. And that is the problem and has been overvthe season. How to fix it is a dilemma. Either BR gets in players that are better at playing his system, or the system has to change. I think BR is inclined towards the former. Will he succeed in attracting the right players? If both Rogic and Armstrong go, he will have the space to bring in replacements but somehow a forward passer has to be found and integrated into the team. For that to happen BR has to allow players to take chances going forward. When Ajer goes on one of his Van Dijk runs, you can see the uncertainty in the opposition. We need forwards who will attempt that. Musonda is that tupe of player but who knows what really happened there?

Motherwell now know exactly what they have to do against us. Just pray that we score early and first. If we fall behind, it could be game over with our strike rate.

Nothing leaves a more bitter taste, than the taste of… Betrayal.

Betrayal feels nothing,
but joy in itself, blinded by stupidity,
The songs we sang, we thought of you as our friend,
we should have known that you would become our enemy, in the end,
You sang YNWA and we believed you,
what happened to you, why did you cross the divide,

Betrayed, we feel… Betrayed.

Another appalling assault on Scott Brown and this time it hurt.

You could see by his reaction both then and at full time, as he realised it was a deliberate attempt to put him out of next week.

Time for club to get serious about this and no more Broony saying it doesn’t affect him and Rodgers saying it’ll be “interesting what the SFA do”.

It’s clearly not isolated incidents and we really need to protect a valuable asset.

The Billys Of The Boys Brigade

Oh, father, why are you so sad
On this home cup tie morn
When Ibrox men are proud and glad
Of the heated ba’ we’ve drawn?
My son, it seems a memory stirs
Of far-off, distant days
When, being a young Hun like you, I watched the Rangers play.

Where is the club I used to see
When ‘history’ was made
With EBTs that were tax-free
And debts we never paid?

And now at home we watch a clone
That wears our made-up stars
But people know it’s just Sevco
And laugh at us in bars
They say ‘Gers died and split their sides
When we say it’s the same
Even worse, Sevco’s going burst and heading down the drain.

Where is the club I used to see
From whom we stole the name?
We like to claim its history
But don’t accept its shame.

And so, my boy, I’ve told you why
When Sevco play I cry
For I recall we did fuck all
As we watched the old club die
It was long ago before Sevco
The Billy Boys and me
Watched as our side began its slide into obscurity.

Where is the club I used to see?
Who ‘bought’ the history?
Will we be told when Sevco fold
To follow ‘Gers mark 3?

Compare and contrast :

Celtic give new 4 year contract to a promising and carefully nurtured ball playing centre half who is only 20 and already experienced in big games and becoming more confident.

Rangers sign a 29 year old midfielder from Burnley on a free transfer for 4 years. Phil McG reports he could be on 36k a week!!

Celtic sign 26 year old Scott Bain on a free transfer

Rangers continue to pursue 36 year old Allan MacGregor on a Bosman

Im happy with our approach if Im honest. It seems Rangers are going all in to stop 10 in a row at first attempt..if it doesn’t go well early then they might not make Xmas!

We lost the game because the players didn’t play well enough. The formation was fine but once again BR whistling instructions on about five occasions. I’m gutted with the result as I am for every defeat. Couldn’t care less about others and had to suffer Loga, Mc Lean and Shinnie dancing with delight because they beat us. We need to shoot more often and drive the game and the opponents into the ground. They were dirty time wasters and their songs are vile so no love for the sheep. They and the tribute will be out soon enough.
Last thing…top scorer, Sinclair with 10 and a lower points total than Ronnie in his last season…just saying like. Not good enough…not yet.

Pretty poor against Aberdeen and Jillie but Celticvhavevturned up for all the key domestic games this season and while I expect Motherwell try and equalise the difference in the two teams they can’t limit the pitch so they will try to limit our most influential players. Dembelle started really well on Sunday but was wrapped in cotton wool, understandably, but our performance dropped after 15 minutes again. Defence looked fine, Boyata sorted out the Aberdeen forwards and then Logan.
I used to have sympathy for him because he seemed to be getting bood for being a victim of racist abuse but of course no one else heard it, all I can say watching his response if he wasn’t he must be a world class actor. Then came the “tackle “ on Tierney and kicking the ball off Scott Brown and bang went any sympathy, I don’t know if he was getting abuse on Sunday
I didn’t hear any of it but I suppose he was being defiant but he let himself and his club down. I think Aberdeen were going to beat some time, better in a nothing match that gives the new club a hassle.

Season ticket £500 …less discount for the meaningless games after we win eight
I was with school kids with the Kano Foundation many of whom had never been anywhere near Celtic Park. Those Kano bhoys were and are a class act and the kids loved it. Praying for one goal, just one. Lift that Cup Celtic.

Morning Monti and everyone else.
Here is the starting 11 that will give us the back-to-back treble. I’m assuming Brendan will stay with 4-2-3-1
Gordon
Lustig/Boyata/Ajer/Tierney
Brown/Ntcham
Forrest/Rogic/McGregor
Dembele
subs: Bain/Hendry/Armstrong/Roberts/Griffiths/Sinclair/Kouassi
We need to keep 11 on the park and hope that the referee will prevent any GBH on Brown and Tierney. The footballing gap between the two sides is enormous, in our favour. Let’s just do it and make history.

Tommy, we’ll never forget you: as a footballer and as a human being.
In my previous post I had Hendry as a sub (right back/centre half) but forgot that he is cup-tied. I’d then have Jozo as a sub.
